Gang rape of young photojournalist shocks Mumbai
NEW DELHI (AP) — A young photojournalist was gang raped while her male colleague was tied up and beaten in an isolated, overgrown corner of India's business hub of Mumbai, police said Friday. The case was reminiscent of the December gang rape and death of a young university student in the Indian capital that shocked the country.The latest attack took place Thursday evening in Lower Parel, a onetime textile-manufacturing neighborhood of south Mumbai that over the past decade has changed dramatically. Today, upscale malls, trendy restaurants and super-luxury condominiums sit side-by-side with abandoned textile mills and sprawling slums.Police said the 22-year-old woman was on assignment to take pictures of the neighborhood when five men confronted her and her colleague at about 7 p.m. After initially offering to help her get permission to shoot inside a crumbling, isolated building, the men became aggressive and accused the male colleague of being involved in a local crime.When he denied involvement in the crime, they tied his hands with a belt and took the woman to another part of the compound and took turns raping her, Mumbai's police commissioner, Satyapal Singh, told reporters.Police on Friday arrested a suspect in the attack who named and identified the other four men, Singh said. While police have released sketches of the four men, Singh would not give their names or other details, saying authorities did not want to give them any warning that they were being sought. Singh said the men may have been local drug dealers.The woman was in stable condition in a hospital. Police declined to say who she was working for at the time of the attack.The assault comes amid heightened concerns about sexual violence in India. The gang rape and death of the student on a bus in New Delhi in December had shaken a country long inured to violence against women and sparked protests demanding better protection for women.In response, the government passed a stringent law increasing prison terms for rape and making voyeurism, stalking, acid attacks and the trafficking of women punishable under criminal law.About 1,000 people, including members of several local journalists' associations, gathered Friday evening in south Mumbai to stage a silent protest. Some wore black armbands, while others carried placards reading "Stop rape" and "City of shame."The attack was also discussed in India's Parliament, where junior Home Minister R.P.N. We will not ask to return to Yafo, Akko and Tzfat,” he said.Members of Meretz said that Abbas told them a “fair agreement” will end the conflict with Israel and that a “peace agreement with Israel will be final and binding." He did not, however, specify what is meant by a fair peace agreement and did not commit to the fact that PA would give up its demand for the “right of return”.He added that he believes all obstacles to peace could be overcome and resolved within six months, though he said that at this point there was little progress in the talks. Abbas made it clear, however, that he would not agree to temporary borders and would only sign an agreement that would allow the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state alongside Israel.The PA chairman criticized Israel’s behavior around the resumption of negotiations, saying, according to Channel 2, "I wanted there to be daily meetings or at most every two days, because our time is limited, but Israel refused." The IDF has denied earlier reports from Arabic media that it responded to the rockets with artillery fire.
Lebanese media has been reporting that at least 2 of the rockets were fired from the Ras al-Ain neighborhood of the city of Tyre.The IDF spokesperson's unit has said it believes the rockets were fired by "global jihad" terrorists - another term for Al Qaeda-linked or inspired Sunni terroristsת as opposed to the Shia Hezbollah terrorist group.One rocket was intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system, between Akko and Nahariya, the IDF said. Three others struck in "open areas."Earlier this month, four IDF soldiers suffered light to moderate injuries on the Israel-Lebanon border, when a bomb was set off as they passed.That attack was later claimed by Hezbollah.This would not be the first time Sunni Islamist groups affiliated with the "global jihad" or Al Qaeda ideology have fired rockets from Lebanon into Israel.Arieh Herzog, a former director of the Israeli defense ministry's Missile Defense Administration, warned "this kind of attack could provide (provoke) very serious action from our side."He stressed, however, that missile defence capabilities were "much better" than they had been during Israel's 2006 war in Lebanon against Iranian proxy Hezbollah."We don't have enough (Iron Dome) batteries... to cover each and every city in Israel," he told reporters."But there's been a big change since the second Lebanon war. At that time, many rockets fell on the northern part of Israel. Our defences are much better today than in the past."
