Report: Iran's Supreme Leader Dead-Rumors surface on social media that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has died after undergoing surgery for cancer.By Tova Dvorin-First Publish: 3/8/2015, 7:56 AM-israel nationalnews

Posts on social media indicate that Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has died, Breitbart News reports Sunday, although no official announcement has yet been made. Two well-known journalists from Cairo and Israel tweeted that Khamenei had died Saturday after a bout with prostate cancer, noting that the information stems from "reliable sources."Khamenei was urgently brought to a hospital in Tehran after several of his bodily systems had already failed, Arab media reported Thursday; Iranian media outlets confirmed the news Friday.Rumors that he was suffering from prostate cancer that had metastasized to multiple systems have persisted for months. The 76 year-old dictator underwent surgery earlier this week; the latest reports had indicated that he was in critical condition. Despite the lack of official confirmation over his death, speculation has already begun over his successor, whom Khamenei has not yet formally named. Khamenei has called for Israel’s destruction several times in the past. Recently, the Iranian leader accused Israel of having "no limit or boundaries regarding viciousness, cruelty, and trampling underfoot all human standards and ethnics. Crimes, genocide, mass destruction, the killing of children, women and the homeless... they take pride in."He previously said on Twitter that the Israel government was “the most wicked terrorist” in the world.Khamenei has also called Israel an "illegitimate and bastard regime," and further called the United States a "smiling enemy" that is not to be trusted.

Khamenei Alive, Makes Public Appearance to Stop Death Rumors-Iran's Supreme Leader makes public appearance Sunday to stop death rumors - but it is unclear when the footage was taped.By Tova Dvorin-First Publish: 3/8/2015, 2:59 PM / Last Update: 3/8/2015, 3:11 PM-israelnationalnews

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is alive, the semi-official Fars news agency reports Sunday, and made a public appearance in Tehran to dispel "Israeli-driven" rumors of his death.Khamenei appeared alive and healthy in his address to environment activists and state officials, broadcasted on state television Sunday, where he pushed reduction of air and water pollution, among other measures. However, it is unclear when the footage was recorded - and while state media says outright that the appearance was to dispel rumors of his death, it remains unclear whether he acknowledged these rumors within the address itself.Khamenei has accused Israel of lies on multiple occasions, but has apparently remained silent on this point. The Fars report also denies that Khamenei was ever hospitalized for cancer treatments - even though Iranian media admitted this outright on Friday.

Medical situation murky

Iran's New Missile Puts Israel 'in Range'-The Iranian military on Sunday announced that it had developed a new long-range cruise missile with a range of some 2,000 kilometers.By Yaakov Levi-First Publish: 3/8/2015, 4:07 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

As the US and its allies continue to discuss limiting Iran's nuclear program with Tehran, the Iranian military on Sunday announced that it had developed a new long-range cruise missile with a range of some 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) – putting Israel well within its reach, Israeli sources said. The missile, called the “Soumar,” features “different characteristics in terms of range and pinpoint accuracy in comparison with the previous products,” Iranian Defense Minister Hossein Dehqan said at the unveiling of the missile Sunday. The missile, Dehqan said, was developed based on the needs of the Iranian Armed Forces, and is “a crucial step towards increasing the country’s defense and deterrence might.”On Saturday, an Iranian military official said that the country would be unveiling yet another missile system will be unveiled on April 18, when the country marks National Army Day. That system, called the Talaash-3, is based on the Russian S-200 missile system, the official said.In his speech in Washington last week, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said that while the world is capitulating to Iranian demands to allow it to continue with its nuclear development program, the issue of its delivery systems – the advanced missiles it is developing – has not even been placed on the agenda yet, because Iran refuses to discuss it at all. Commenting Sunday, Iran's Aerospace Division head Amirali Hajizadeh said that Tehran “will never negotiated the country's defense capabilities, including the development of its ballistic missiles.”In a statement, Iran's state-controlled Press TV quoted government sources as saying that “Iran has repeatedly assured other countries that its military might poses no threat to other states, insisting that the country’s defense doctrine is entirely based on deterrence”The new Soumar missile is named for a city on the Iraqi border whose inhabitants were nearly all wiped out by an Iraqi chemical attack during the Iran-Iraq war.

Minister: Coalition Must Save Iraq Heritage Sites-ISIS's offensive against archaeological sites moves Iraq to ask the global community for aerial support.By Arutz Sheva Staff-First Publish: 3/8/2015, 2:18 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS

The US-led coalition carrying out air strikes against the Islamic State group must try to protect archaeological sites being destroyed by the jihadists, Iraq's tourism and antiquities minister said Sunday.ISIS recently smashed priceless artifacts at the Mosul museum, then bulldozed the city of Nimrud, which was founded in the 13th century BC.The jihadists may now have turned their attention to the extremely well preserved fortress city Hatra, which is over 2,000 years old and a UNESCO world heritage site, with the United Nations condemning its reported "destruction.""The sky is not in the hands of the Iraqis, the sky is not in our hands. Therefore, the international community must move with the means it has," Adel Fahad al- Shershab told AFP in Baghdad."We request aerial support," Shershab said.Asked specifically if he wanted coalition strikes to protect archaeological sites, he responded: "What I request from the international community and the international coalition is to carry out air strikes against terrorism wherever it is found."The attacks on Iraq's archaeological heritage took place in ISIS-held areas in the northern province of Nineveh, where Iraq does not have security forces that are able to respond on the ground. But targeting terrorists destroying archaeological sites would be a departure for the coalition, which is carrying out strikes aimed at weakening ISIS military capabilities in Iraq and neighboring Syria."The site of Hatra is a site in the desert where it is possible to see any infiltration" from the air, Shershab said of the ancient city, which features a unique blend of eastern and western architecture."It was expected that they (ISIS) would destroy it," he said. But it remains unclear whether large-scale destruction was carried out at Hatra, whose thick walls and large buildings withstood two Roman invasions in the 2nd century AD.Shershab said his ministry had not been able to officially confirm what had happened because the area is held by ISIS.The jihadists spear headed a sweeping offensive last June that overran large areas north and west of Baghdad, and Iraqi forces backed by the US-led coalition and Iran are battling to push them back.ISIS tries to justify the destruction of antiquities by saying they are idolatrous, but experts say the group traffics in them to fund its self-proclaimed "caliphate" and destroys only those pieces that are too bulky to be smuggled.Shershab echoed the point on Sunday: "They say 'it is haram' (forbidden by Islam). At the same time they are selling (artifacts) and benefiting financially."The timing of the attacks suggests they are more for propaganda purposes than a matter of religious conviction, as the terrorists have controlled the areas where the sites are located for close to nine months.
