MOSCOW, Russia (AP) — It’s been a mixed year for Russian President Vladimir Putin.Putin may look like a winner after an abrupt US decision to pull out of Syria. But Russia’s leader faces massive challenges in Syria and elsewhere, and he hasn’t moved an inch closer toward throwing off the Western sanctions that have emaciated Russia’s economy.The Russian military campaign in Syria has achieved the Kremlin objective of shoring up Syrian President Bashar Assad’s rule at a relatively modest cost and made Moscow an essential player in the Middle East. However, Syria lies in ruins after nearly eight years of fighting and Moscow has failed to persuade the West to help foot Syria’s multi-billion reconstruction bill.Even though the hasty pullout ordered by US President Donald Trump could further bolster Moscow’s clout in Syria, it leaves Russia pitted against Turkey, which is eager to expand its zone of influence. Moscow will also be saddled with the delicate task of trying to balance the conflicting interests of Israel and Iran in the region.“It could be seen by some as Putin’s success, but in fact it means trouble for Putin,” Alexei Malashenko, a leading Moscow-based Middle East expert, said about the planned US withdrawal. “The situation may change drastically, and Russia will be responsible for that. The survey also reflected growing public worries about Western sanctions, with 43 percent of those polled expressing concern about them compared to 28 percent a year ago.The nationwide poll of 1,600 conducted in late November had a margin of error of no more than 3.4 percentage points.Yet while the Western restrictions have stymied Russia’s growth, they also gave Putin a convenient explanation for his domestic problems.“The American and European sanctions have in fact helped bolster Putin’s power, allowing him to point to foreign pressure,” Malashenko said.Russia saw 1.5 percent growth in 2017 following a two-year recession and its economy is set to grow 1.8 percent this year. MOSCOW, Russia (AP) — It’s been a mixed year for Russian President Vladimir Putin.Putin may look like a winner after an abrupt US decision to pull out of Syria. But Russia’s leader faces massive challenges in Syria and elsewhere, and he hasn’t moved an inch closer toward throwing off the Western sanctions that have emaciated Russia’s economy.The Russian military campaign in Syria has achieved the Kremlin objective of shoring up Syrian President Bashar Assad’s rule at a relatively modest cost and made Moscow an essential player in the Middle East. However, Syria lies in ruins after nearly eight years of fighting and Moscow has failed to persuade the West to help foot Syria’s multi-billion reconstruction bill.Even though the hasty pullout ordered by US President Donald Trump could further bolster Moscow’s clout in Syria, it leaves Russia pitted against Turkey, which is eager to expand its zone of influence. Moscow will also be saddled with the delicate task of trying to balance the conflicting interests of Israel and Iran in the region.“It could be seen by some as Putin’s success, but in fact it means trouble for Putin,” Alexei Malashenko, a leading Moscow-based Middle East expert, said about the planned US withdrawal. “The situation may change drastically, and Russia will be responsible for that. Jerusalem has lodged a strong protest to Amman after a Jordanian minister was seen stepping on an Israeli flag at the entrance to a government meeting over the weekend.The meeting was held at the country’s trade union headquarters — a body deeply opposed to normalization of relations with Israel despite a peace treaty signed in 1994.The trade union has placed a drawing of the Israeli flag on the floor at the entrance to its building, along with footprints, encouraging visitors to step on it as a form of protest against Israel.Jordan’s minister for media affairs and communications and government spokesperson Jumana Ghunaimat was praised on social media for being among those who chose to step on the flag as she arrived for the meeting.In contrast, Prime Minister Omar Razzaz chose to enter the building through a side entrance, thus avoiding stepping on the Israeli symbol but earning himself criticism in Jordanian media.Political activists also heckled him during his speech at the headquarters, accusing him of hypocrisy in “supporting the Zionist entity.”Media reports didn’t specify whether other ministers and senior officials had stepped on the flag or chosen to enter the building through the side entrance.Israel’s Foreign Ministry has lodged a strong protest with Jordan over the incident, both to government officials in Amman and to the Hashemite kingdom’s embassy in Tel Aviv.Jordan’s attache in Israel was summoned to clarify the matter later Sunday at the Foreign Ministry.Though the two countries have a peace treaty, ties with Israel are unpopular among much of the public in Jordan.Last month, Jordan’s King Abdullah II announced he would not renew part of the 1994 peace treaty that granted Israel use of two small agricultural areas along the border.Abdullah said he would be pulling out of two sectioned annexes to the peace agreement that allowed Israel to lease the areas from the Jordanians for 25 years. The leases expire next year.Abdullah did not give a reason for his decision, but he has been under domestic pressure to end the lease which includes areas at Naharayim in the north and the Tzofar enclave in the southern Arava desert, both of which will now return to Jordanian hands within a year.Amman has faced intense pressure to cancel the lease agreement with Israel, including from 80 lawmakers who signed a letter to the government urging the cancellation.

GIZA, Egypt (AFP) — Crowds of tourists stared in awe at the towering pyramids of Giza near Cairo Saturday undaunted by a nearby bomb attack a day earlier that killed holidaymakers from Vietnam.A roadside bombing claimed the lives of three tourists and their Egyptian guide Friday when it ripped through the bus they were on as it traveled near the world-famous attraction.The attack comes as Egypt’s vital tourism sector has begun to recover after years of instability and jihadist violence that scared visitors away.“I think terrorism can strike anywhere in the world,” Somand Yang from South Korea told AFP.“You have to be careful but it is also like luck.”Security forces guarded the entrance to the sprawling site and Yang, 32, said she had no qualms about visiting.“Lightning never strikes twice in the same place. So I figured it will be even safer today,” she said.‘Completely devastated’ Excited holidaymakers rode camels and lined up to enter a tomb as they snapped pictures of the Great Pyramid, the only surviving structure of the seven wonders of the ancient world.Hawkers followed the tourists, doggedly trying to sell trinkets and souvenirs.Despite the steady flow of visitors, Egyptians working at the site said they were shaken by the attack — and concerned that it could hit their livelihoods.“I knew the guide who died yesterday,” said Dalia Sadaka, as she accompanied a group of sightseers.“I completely broke down yesterday, but I had to get to work in the morning,” she said, pointing to her visibly swollen eyes.‘Truly regrettable’ Earlier hit hard by a string of bloody attacks and unrest, visitor numbers to Egypt have more recently staged a partial recovery.In October 2015, a bomb claimed by a local affiliate of the Islamic State jihadist group killed all 224 people on board a passenger jet carrying Russian tourists over the Sinai peninsula.That incident dealt a severe blow to Egypt’s tourism industry, which was still reeling from the turmoil set off by the 2011 uprising that forced veteran leader Hosni Mubarak from power.The official statistics agency says arrivals reached 8.2 million in 2017, up from 5.3 million the year before.But that figure was still far short of the record influx in 2010 when over 14 million came.“I fear yesterday’s incident may have an impact on our source of income,” said an elderly man who offers camel rides, declining to give his name.“It is very regrettable,” he said. “We were finally happy that tourism started picking up a bit.”

Hamas politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh is scheduled to meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow on January 15, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov told reporters over the weekend, according to Russia’s state-run Tass news agency.Since he became the Hamas terror group’s political chief in May 2017, Haniyeh has not traveled abroad with the exception of several trips to Cairo.“The meeting with Haniyeh is scheduled for January 15,” Bogdanov said, adding that the Hamas chief and Lavrov will discuss “the situation in the Middle East, the Palestinian-Israeli settlement, the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly in the Gaza Strip, and the task of restoring the Palestinian unity.”On November 28, Haidar Rashid, Russia’s representative in Ramallah, delivered an invitation to visit Moscow to Haniyeh, according to Hamas’s official website.Russia’s intention to advance reconciliation efforts between Hamas and Fatah was a “major reason” for its recent decision to invite Haniyeh to the Russian capital, sources told Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, a London-based Arabic newspaper, in mid-December.The two rival parties have been at loggerheads since 2007 when Hamas forcibly ousted the Fatah-dominated Palestinian Authority from the Gaza Strip.Over the past several years, Hamas and Fatah have agreed to a number of reconciliation deals, but have failed to implement them.Israeli government officials have lodged furious protests with Russia over its invitation to the Hamas leader, Channel 10 reported on December 18, citing Israeli officials.But Russian officials rejected Israel’s objections, noting that the Jewish state was itself talking to the terror group, the Channel 10 report added.For the past several months, Israel has engaged in indirect talks with Hamas, mediated by Egypt and other international parties, about Gaza.Russia informed “all parties” including Israel that reconciliation between Fatah and Hamas would help to maintain calm and support the future establishment of a Palestinian state, the sources told to Al-Sharq Al-Awsat.Russia has previously made efforts to advance reconciliation between Fatah and Hamas.In January 2018, Moscow hosted a number representatives from the two rival parties and several other Palestinian factions to discuss mending the internal Palestinian rift.In May 2011, Russia also hosted Fatah and Hamas officials to bolster reconciliation efforts.
