The Central Elections Committee on Friday rejected a petition filed by the Blue and White party to ban Likud from campaigning on social media, due to its alleged use of fake accounts to spread propaganda ahead of the election.Committee chair Justice Hanan Melcer noted that anonymous propaganda was forbidden, including on social media platforms, but said he had not been presented with sufficient evidence that Likud had run a fake network. However, he noted that certain aspects of the case had “raised questions.”Likud said the decision was proof that the Blue and White petition was “a fake petition based on fake reports.” The party said it proved that “the huge support enjoyed by Likud and the prime minister on social media is by real supporters, and not a band of robots, bots, fakes and avatars.”Blue and White has also filed a complaint with police and the attorney general and called for an investigation.Earlier this week an Israeli watchdog group said it had uncovered a network of fake social media accounts disseminating messages on behalf of Likud in support of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.Big Bots Project identified 154 accounts using false names, and another 400 accounts that were suspected to be fake. Researchers said they found over 130,000 tweets from “hundreds of fake or anonymous accounts” without names or profile pictures, which did not identify themselves as linked to Netanyahu’s Likud party. They also identified “hundreds of genuine accounts” backing the premier’s bid for re-election.Among the targets were journalists and public figures considered hostile to Netanyahu including his main challenger, Benny Gantz, leader of the centrist Blue and White party, the report said.The Big Bots report identified a major figure behind the networks as Yitzhak Haddad, who told a private investigator in a recorded conversation that he was an “undercover activist” for the social media campaign. Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan on Saturday said Israel would send additional medical personnel to prisons ahead of a planned hunger strike by Palestinian security prisoners so they would not “flood” Israeli hospitals.The strike, which is set to begin Sunday, is meant to protest against the prisoners’ incarceration conditions — particularly recent Israeli measures to restrict illicit cellphone usage by the prisoners, which include the installation of jamming systems.“We’re prepared to reinforce the medical teams in the prisons so that there won’t be a need to evacuate the prisoners and flood the civilian hospitals [with patients],” Erdan said at a cultural event in Kfar Saba.“We are hoping that they’ll break before then,” he added.Erdan said the prisoners were seeking to use the threat of mass hospitalization to extract concessions. NEW YORK — A sarcophagus believed to contain an Egyptian nobleman will be opened on live TV during a special broadcast by the American channel Discovery.The two-hour “Expedition Unknown: Egypt Live” will air Sunday night (0000 GMT Monday) from the site outside Minya, which is along the Nile River south of Cairo and its Giza pyramids.Egypt has sought to promote archaeological discoveries across the country in a bid to revive tourism hit by turmoil after the 2011 uprising against Hosni Mubarak.The country’s Supreme Council of Antiquities declined to comment, even though Discovery announced that council head Mostafa Waziri would be present for the event.The site containing the sarcophagus was discovered in February last year, and a Discovery spokesman told AFP that the project was set up in collaboration with Egypt’s antiquities ministry.Archaeologists at the site recently discovered a network of vertical shafts leading to a network of tunnels and tombs containing 40 mummies “believed to be part of the noble elite.”In one of those, a limestone sarcophagus holding a 3,000-year-old mummy is to be opened during the show.Discovery declined to disclose the identity of the mummy prior to the broadcast.Prominent Egyptian archaeologist and former antiquities minister Zahi Hawass will also participate, Discovery previously announced.Asked by AFP about a possible financial deal between the channel and the Egyptian state for permission to film and open the grave, the spokesman for Discovery refused all comment.“It’s a media spectacle in the end — but it could make people love antiquities and is a good promotional opportunity for tourism, if done right,” an Egyptian archaeologist who asked to remain anonymous told AFP.She said the broadcasters should not open the tomb without providing solid archaeological context, but “the main problem” is something else.“If money is being paid by a major channel to the ministry to show antiquities, where is it going to end up?” the archaeologist asked.“Will it go in the state’s purse-strings or end up elsewhere? The Central Elections Committee on Friday rejected a petition filed by the Blue and White party to ban Likud from campaigning on social media, due to its alleged use of fake accounts to spread propaganda ahead of the election.Committee chair Justice Hanan Melcer noted that anonymous propaganda was forbidden, including on social media platforms, but said he had not been presented with sufficient evidence that Likud had run a fake network. However, he noted that certain aspects of the case had “raised questions.”Likud said the decision was proof that the Blue and White petition was “a fake petition based on fake reports.” The party said it proved that “the huge support enjoyed by Likud and the prime minister on social media is by real supporters, and not a band of robots, bots, fakes and avatars.”Blue and White has also filed a complaint with police and the attorney general and called for an investigation.Earlier this week an Israeli watchdog group said it had uncovered a network of fake social media accounts disseminating messages on behalf of Likud in support of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.Big Bots Project identified 154 accounts using false names, and another 400 accounts that were suspected to be fake. Researchers said they found over 130,000 tweets from “hundreds of fake or anonymous accounts” without names or profile pictures, which did not identify themselves as linked to Netanyahu’s Likud party. They also identified “hundreds of genuine accounts” backing the premier’s bid for re-election.Among the targets were journalists and public figures considered hostile to Netanyahu including his main challenger, Benny Gantz, leader of the centrist Blue and White party, the report said.The Big Bots report identified a major figure behind the networks as Yitzhak Haddad, who told a private investigator in a recorded conversation that he was an “undercover activist” for the social media campaign. Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan on Saturday said Israel would send additional medical personnel to prisons ahead of a planned hunger strike by Palestinian security prisoners so they would not “flood” Israeli hospitals.The strike, which is set to begin Sunday, is meant to protest against the prisoners’ incarceration conditions — particularly recent Israeli measures to restrict illicit cellphone usage by the prisoners, which include the installation of jamming systems.“We’re prepared to reinforce the medical teams in the prisons so that there won’t be a need to evacuate the prisoners and flood the civilian hospitals [with patients],” Erdan said at a cultural event in Kfar Saba.“We are hoping that they’ll break before then,” he added.Erdan said the prisoners were seeking to use the threat of mass hospitalization to extract concessions. WASHINGTON (AFP) — The head UN nuclear inspector said Friday that his agency is asking Saudi Arabia to agree to safeguards on nuclear material that could arrive by the end of the year for its first atomic reactor.Satellite imagery recently emerged of the Argentine-built project on the outskirts of Riyadh, which comes amid controversy in Washington over President Donald Trump’s approval of nuclear projects with the oil-rich kingdom.But Yukiya Amano, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said there was nothing secret about the reactor and that Saudi Arabia informed the Vienna-based UN body about its plans in 2014.He said the IAEA has encouraged Saudi Arabia to put into force a comprehensive safeguards agreement, under which the agency ensures that nuclear material is not being diverted to weapons use.Saudi Arabia in 2005 signed with the IAEA a so-called small quantities protocol, which exempts countries from inspections if they have no or minimal nuclear programs.“We have proposed to Saudi Arabia to rescind and replace it by the full-fledged comprehensive safeguards agreement,” Amano told reporters in Washington.“They didn’t say no, they didn’t say yes, and they are now giving thoughts. Over 10,000 Palestinians participated in weekly protests and riots along the Gaza Strip’s border with Israel Friday afternoon.Despite reported calls by organizers and armed factions to avoid violence, as Israel and Hamas work to achieve a long-term truce, clashes were reported. Some protesters hurled rocks and explosive devices at Israeli troops, who responded with less-lethal measures. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said 70 people had been injured, one of them critically.By nightfall the protesters had disbanded. The White House is claiming the entire slate of Democratic presidential candidates has failed to adequately condemn anti-Semitism and consistently rejected the need to protect Israel.The sweeping statement issued Saturday by White House spokesman Hogan Gidley comes after Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke compared the rhetoric used by US President Donald Trump to describe immigrants to the rhetoric used in Nazi Germany.O’Rourke made the comments during multiple campaign stops in Iowa on Thursday. The White House did not respond to a request for comment at the time.Instead of directly addressing O’Rourke’s comments, the statement from Gidley sought to attack the Democratic party on the same day that Trump addressed the annual meeting of the Republican Jewish Coalition in Las Vegas.O’Rourke made the comments Thursday night at a campaign town hall, where he called out “the rhetoric of a president who not only describes immigrants as rapists and criminals but as animals and an infestation,” in response to a question on how he would address attacks from Republicans.The former congressman from Texas said, “Now, I might expect someone to describe another human being as an infestation in the Third Reich.
