Russians killed in missile test blast were working on 'new weapons'-[AFP]-yahoonews-August 12, 2019

Moscow (AFP) - Russia's nuclear agency chief on Monday confirmed that five scientists killed last week were developing "new weapons" and vowed to continue testing despite the explosion. The accident took place at an Arctic military facility on the coast of the White Sea on Thursday, but Russian authorities only admitted its nuclear nature on Saturday. The explosion caused a spike in radiation levels.US experts have said it could be linked to testing of the "Burevestnik" cruise missile, touted by President Vladimir Putin earlier this year.As a memorial service was held for the scientists on Monday, the head of nuclear agency Rosatom said their efforts would continue."The best (thing) for their memory will be our further work on the new weapons," Alexei Likhachev was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies."We are fulfilling the task of the motherland, its security will be reliably ensured."Rosatom said this weekend that its staff were providing engineering and technical support for the "isotope power source" of a missile. The missile was being tested on a platform at sea when its fuel caught fire and caused an explosion, it said. Several staff were blown into the sea by the blast. The Russian military announced the death of two "specialists" after the explosion but it is not known if they were among the five scientists whose deaths were announced by Rosatom.Three other people were injured in the accident, suffering burns, according to the nuclear agency. The military did not initially say that the accident involved nuclear equipment, stressing that radiation levels were normal afterwards. But the nearby city of Severodvinsk recorded elevated levels following the accident and panicked residents rushed to buy iodine to counteract radiation.- 'Real heroes' -In a state of the nation address earlier this year Putin announced the development of what he called "invincible" missiles, threatening to deploy them against "decision-making centres" in Western countries if there were serious threats against Russia.Experts have linked the blast to the 9M730 Burevestnik nuclear-powered cruise missile, known by NATO as SSC-X-9 Skyfall.Putin said in February that tests on the Burevestnik were going successfully. The accident took place at the Nyonoksa test site on the White Sea, used for testing missiles deployed in nuclear submarines and ships since the Soviet era.A memorial service for the scientists was held Monday in the closed city of Sarov, 500 kilometres (300 miles) east of Moscow.Sergei Kiriyenko, the deputy head of Putin's administration and a former nuclear chief, called the victims "real heroes" at the ceremony. He said that while conducting the tests the scientists took on physical risks "which, unfortunately, however much you prepare, cannot be completely avoided."During the Cold War, Sarov was a top-secret city known as Arzamas-16. The centre produced the Soviet Union's first nuclear weapons. It is still a closed city accessible only with special passes.Last month, 14 Russian navy officers were killed in a fire on a top-secret nuclear-powered submersible in circumstances that have not been fully revealed. The incident comes with fears of a new arms race after Moscow and Washington withdrew earlier this year from the Cold War-era Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty.

Deadly explosion at Russian test site involved nuclear power source, reports say-[USA TODAY]-August 12, 2019

An explosion at a northern Russian base that killed at least five people last week involved a small nuclear reactor, state nuclear officials said. The blast occurred Thursday on a platform in the White Sea off Nyonoksa and caused a reported nearby radiation spike in Severodvinsk.State-controlled nuclear energy company Rosatom said the explosion occurred during a test of "a nuclear isotope power source" for a rocket.Vyacheslav Solovyov, scientific director at the Russian Federal Nuclear Center, also confirmed to a local newspaper that the institute was studying "small-scale" power sources that include "fissile materials," the New York Times and Reuters reported.Five scientists from the center were buried Monday. The country's defense ministry originally said two people were killed in the accident, but Rosatom said five of its workers were killed.Nuclear experts believe the accident occurred during a test of a missile that Russian President Vladamir Putin has touted in the past year, the Times and Reuters reported. The SSC-X-9 Skyfall is a protoype cruise missile that could reach any corner of the world with a nuclear reactor as its power source, the Times reported. The explosion occurred when the rocket's fuel caught fire, according to Reuters. “The testers are national heroes,” said Valentin Kostyukov, head of a nuclear center part of Rosatom.Russian military officials denied that the blast caused a radiation spike, but the city of Severodvinsk initially posted a statement on its website warning of the increase that was later taken down, Bloomberg reported. The extent of the damage from the accident was not immediately clear but appears to be much smaller than that of the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, the Times reported.Contributing: The Associated Press. Russia explosion: Radiation spike and two dead after nuclear missile test site blast-AN EXPLOSION and fire at a Russian site for testing missile for nuclear submarines has left at least two people dead and 10 injured.By Joey Millar-EXPRESS-12:28, Thu, Aug 8, 2019

The incident at Severodvinsk, in the Arkhangelsk, was also feared to have led to a spike in radiation levels. A spokesperson for the city said: "At around 12 o’clock in Severodvinsk, a short-term excess of the radiation background was recorded." However state-run media sources later said radiation levels were normal and no harmful substances had been released. Russian news agency TASS said victims had been confirmed with ambulance crews at the scene. They quoted an unnamed source as saying: "As a result of the emergency, one person was killed. The incident began with the ship, now there is a fire.”The Governor of the Arkhangelsk Region Igor Orlov said: “There are victims, ambulance is sent to the place.”Russian news agency, RIA, and TASS said two people had died with more than 15 injured. They said a jet engine had exploded during a test.Russia explosion. The Ministry for Defence said: "At the test site of the Russian Ministry of Defence in the Arkhangelsk region, when testing a liquid propulsion system, an explosion occurred and the product ignited.“As a result of the accident, six representatives of the Ministry of Defece and a developer enterprise were injured of varying severity.“Two specialists died from the wounds received. All the victims were promptly taken to a medical facility, where they received the necessary medical care.“There were no emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere, the radiation background is normal.”It comes just a week after a separate explosion at another Russian military base in Siberia.Eight people were injured and at least 11,000 evacuated after the blast at a factory run by aluminium producer Rusa at a military site.Rusal, the world's largest aluminium producer outside China, suspended operations at its Achinsk alumina plant and evacuated all but essential staff to ensure their safety, it said.Videos shared on social media showed the panicked evacuation of the area. One video shared on Instagram showed a crowd of people rushing away from an explosion through a woodland.Another showed a traffic jam caused by drivers fleeing the area.Today the residents of the village of Kamenka were evacuated once again after dangerous ammunition was found as a result of the blast.

Mass evacuation after fire triggers explosions at Siberian base-Flying shrapnel from military base leaves one soldier dead and at least seven injured-Andrew Roth in Moscow-Last modified on Tue 6 Aug 2019 11.37 BST

Thousands have been evacuated from a Siberian town after an ammunition depot on a military base caught fire, triggering huge explosions that have sent deadly shrapnel flying for miles around. One soldier was killed and at least seven other people have been injured, including several with shrapnel wounds, according to Russian state media reports.Video posted to social media showed thick smoke rising over the military base and visible shockwaves rising from the thunderous blasts. Some of the explosions sent flames and white sparks flying high into the air.Joseph Dempsey (@JosephHDempsey)-This visible shock wave provides an indication of the power of explosions at #Russia munitions depot near Kamenka, Siberia https://t.co/yedJmZAZBH pic.twitter.com/K5AXCeaSRT- August 5, 2019-An estimated 40,000 tank and artillery shells are kept on the base in Achinsk, a Siberian city that lies near the Trans-Siberian railroad, 2,000 miles east of Moscow. The Russian Defense Ministry said the storage site that exploded held gunpowder charges for artillery shells.Russian state media estimated that 11,000 people have been evacuated to a distance of 12.5 miles from the base. The mayor of Achinsk, Ilay Akhmetov, has told the 100,000 residents of the city to prepare for evacuation. Video from the town showed local residents scrambling as explosions and an air siren could be heard.Flames and debris rise from the ammunition depot on fire.“Explosion after explosion,” one woman filming the blasts said. “One is happening every 10 seconds.”Sarah Rainsford (@sarahrainsford)-Crazy pictures from Krasnoyarsk region - where a weapons store is exploding at a military base.......like this girls basketball team-Soldiers on the base are hiding in bomb shelters as fire fighters use armoured vehicles for protection pic.twitter.com/HPzSGrcmgI-August 5, 2019-It is not clear what caused the blasts, although lax safety precautions have caused similar accidents in the past. Siberia has also been hit by wildfires this summer, made worse by warming temperatures and a lack of rainfall.Explosions at ammunition dumps can send unexploded shells flying for miles around, requiring a significant clean-up effort to de-mine residential areas before locals can return to their homes.

North Korea's two short-range missiles in show of force-[The Telegraph]-YAHOONEWS-August 9, 2019

North Korea fired what appeared to be two short-range missiles on Saturday, South Korea said, in a “show of force” against US and South Korea joint military exercises.More missile launches are highly probable, as the North Korean military is conducting its own summer drills, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement. The launch came a few hours after U.S. President Donald Trump said he had received a “very beautiful letter” from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.North Korea has fired a series of missiles and rockets since Kim and Trump agreed at a June 30 meeting to revive stalled denuclearisation talks.A US official said that at least one projectile was launched and that it appeared to be similar to previous short-range missiles fired by Pyongyang. Two missiles flew about 400 km (250 miles) at a height of about 48 km, according to the South Korean military.Trump played down the recent North Korean weapons launches when he spoke to reporters earlier on Friday, saying: “I say it again: There have been no nuclear tests. The missile tests have all been short-range. No ballistic missile tests. No long-range missiles.”-NOT HAPPY-Kim has said the weapons tests were a response to US and South Korean military drills being held this month.Trump said Kim had written in his letter that he was “not happy” about the war games and missile tests. He added he could have another meeting with Kim.The United States and South Korea have kicked off largely computer-simulated exercises as an alternative to previous large-scale annual drills that were halted to expedite denuclearisation talks.North Korea decries such exercises as a rehearsal for war aimed at toppling its leadership. The projectiles were fired at dawn on Saturday from an area around the northeastern city of Hamhung, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement.Large solid-fuel rocket engines for North Korea’s ballistic missile program are most likely being produced at a factory complex in Hamhung, monitoring group 38 North said last year. Hamhung also has a testing site for those engines. The missile launches on Saturday were apparently testing capabilities of a new short-range missile Pyongyang is developing, South Korea’s presidential office said.“Because of concerns that North Korea’s series of launches can raise military tensions on the Korean Peninsula, ministers called for North Korea to stop it,” the Blue House said, citing a meeting of South Korea’s top security officials.Kim Dong-yup, a former naval officer who teaches at Seoul’s Kyungnam University, said the weapons tested on Saturday could be related to the completion of North Korea’s new rocket artillery system that required multiple launches of the same kind.
