US gears up for weekend protests amid anger at new police abuses-The Times of Israel-Massive street demonstrations are set for Saturday, with tens of thousands expected in Washington, as controversy builds over use of force against largely peaceful demonstrators-By Peter HUTCHISON Today, 8:17 am 0
NEW YORK (AFP) — The United States braced Friday for massive weekend protests against racism and police brutality, as outrage soared over the latest law enforcement abuses against demonstrators that were caught on camera. With protests over last week’s police killing of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, surging into a second weekend, US President Donald Trump sparked fresh controversy by saying it was a “great day” for Floyd.Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee for November’s election, called Trump’s comments “frankly despicable,” as thousands took to streets across America for a 10th straight day of anti-racism demonstrations.Massive street demonstrations are set for Saturday, including in Washington where tens of thousands of people are expected. The mayor painted “Black Lives Matter” in giant letters on the road leading to the White House ahead of the crowd’s arrival. With the Washington Monument in the background people walk on the street leading to the White House after the words Black Lives Matter were painted on it by city workers and activists Friday, June 5, 2020, in Washington. (AP Photo/Manuel Balce Ceneta)-Also on Saturday a remembrance for Floyd will be held in Raeford, North Carolina, the state where he was born, following an initial ceremony in Minneapolis that was held Thursday. The protests, sparked by a police officer kneeling on Floyd’s neck for almost nine minutes as he pleaded for his life, took place amid a roiling controversy over officers’ use of force against largely peaceful demonstrators. In Buffalo, New York, two policemen were suspended without pay after a video showed them shoving over a 75-year-old protester who fell and suffered a head injury. In this image from video provided by WBFO, a Buffalo police officer appears to shove a man who walked up to police on June 4, 2020, in Buffalo, New York. (Mike Desmond/WBFO via AP)-Reporting the suspension on Twitter, Mayor Byron Brown said he and the police commissioner were “deeply disturbed” by the video. An earlier police statement said the man, who appeared unconscious and bleeding heavily from the head, “tripped and fell.”Governor Andrew Cuomo called the incident “wholly unjustified and utterly disgraceful,” in a tweet. In Indianapolis, police launched an investigation after a video emerged showing at least four officers hitting a woman with batons and firing pepper balls at her on Sunday night. And in New York City Thursday, officers baton-charged dozens of peaceful protesters defying a curfew in the Bronx after pinning them in, leaving them with nowhere to run, several reports said.New York Police Commissioner Dermot Shea announced Friday that two officers had been suspended following “several troubling incidents,” one for pushing a woman to the ground and another for pulling down a man’s face mask and spraying pepper spray at him. Both incidents were caught on video.‘Out of control’Under-fire New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, who imposed the week-long night-time curfew after widespread looting earlier in the week, has repeatedly said the NYPD is showing “restraint.”In an editorial published Friday, The New York Times called on him to “open your eyes.“The police are out of control,” it said.Floyd, 46, died in the Midwestern city of Minneapolis while handcuffed during a May 25 arrest for a non-violent offense. His death reignited longstanding resentment over police killings of African Americans and unleashed a nationwide wave of protest unlike anything seen in the US since Martin Luther King’s 1968 assassination.Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (2nd L) takes a knee during in a Black Lives Matter protest on Parliament Hill June 5, 2020 in Ottawa, Canada (Dave Chan / AFP)Mass protests have also taken place in European capitals and on Friday Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau joined a large demonstration in Ottawa. The action has handed Trump one of the greatest challenges of his tumultuous presidency. While condemning Floyd’s death, he has adopted a tough stance towards the protesters and has been accused of exacerbating tensions.US civil rights groups have filed a case suing Trump after security forces fired pepper balls and smoke bombs to clear peaceful demonstrators in Washington before the president walked to a church for a photo op earlier this week.Mayor Muriel Bowser Friday renamed the area outside the White House “Black Lives Matter Plaza” — unveiling a giant street mural — after tweeting a letter calling on Trump to “withdraw all extraordinary federal law enforcement and military presence from our city.”But Trump was back in a buoyant mood following the release of strong job numbers Friday. He told reporters that such violence as Floyd’s death in handcuffs cannot be allowed to happen.US President Donald Trump speaks during a news conference in the Rose Garden of the White House, Friday, June 5, 2020, in Washington. It’s a great day for everybody,” he said.Biden immediately slammed Trump for invoking Floyd’s name.“George Floyd’s last words, ‘I can’t breathe,’ have echoed across our nation and around the world.“For the President to try to put any other words in his mouth is frankly despicable,” he tweeted.Curfews lifted-Some of the early protests were marred by rioting and looting but they have been mostly peaceful since then.Protesters lie silent for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, June 5, 2020, during a demonstration to honor George Floyd, near the home of Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg in Sacramento, California (AP Photo/Rich Pedroncelli)-Curfews have been lifted in Washington, Los Angeles and other cities but New York’s is due to run for the next three nights.Several thousand marched in Brooklyn on Friday afternoon as activists sought to keep up the movement’s momentum into the weekend.

PA said to tell ICC that Oslo Accords are void along with all other Israel deals-The Times of Israel-Palestinian Authority answers query from judges on Mahmoud Abbas’s declaration last month voiding all agreements with Israel, ahead of a ruling on jurisdiction for war crimes probe-By TOI staff and Raphael Ahren-june 8,20-Today, 11:14 am
The Palestinian Authority reportedly told the International Criminal Court on Thursday that it stands by a statement made by PA President Mahmoud Abbas last month which said that Israeli annexation of parts of the West Bank would void all Palestinian-Israeli agreements, including the Oslo Accords, and that the PA is already from its responsibilities under these agreements. The statement came after three judges last week asked the PA to clarify the situation. The judges — who make up the pretrial chamber tasked with ruling on whether the court has jurisdiction to open a criminal investigation into suspected war crimes committed on Palestinian territories — had given Ramallah a June 10 deadline to respond to their query.According to the Haaretz daily, in response to the request, the PA re-released a statement Abbas had originally made in May, declaring that “if Israel proceeds with annexation, a material breach of the agreements between the two sides, then it will have annulled any remnants of the Oslo Accords and all other agreements concluded between them.”The statement was said to continue that Israel’s “persistent violations of these agreements, and its announced plans and measures for annexation, absolve the Palestine Liberation Organization and the State of Palestine from any obligation arising from these agreements, including security.”However, the PA reportedly emphasized that Abbas’s statement should not be considered part of the court’s legal proceedings.Bill Clinton looks on as Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat shake hands during the signing of the Oslo Accords, September 13, 1993. (photo credit: courtesy GPO)-The Oslo Accords were signed in Washington in 1993. A follow-up agreement two years later, sometimes called Oslo II, set out the scope of Palestinian autonomy in the West Bank and Gaza. The interim pact was only supposed to last five years while a permanent agreement was finalized but it has tacitly been rolled over for more than two decades.Observers have said the pretrial chamber’s interest in the status of the 1993 accords put Ramallah in a bind: If it renounces the agreement that for the first time granted it autonomy in the areas it claims for its state, and thus hands the keys back to Israel, how can it argue that Palestine is a sovereign state that can transfer jurisdiction to The Hague for a war crimes investigation? The court’s chief prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda, whose opinion that the court does have jurisdiction to launch the probe is partially based on the Oslo Accords, has been ordered by the pretrial chamber to respond to the Palestinians’ response by June 14.????#PTC1 / @IntlCrimCourt requests submissions from #Palestine in light of #MohammedAbbas (#AbuMaazen) declaration of 19.5.20 that @nadplo and @Palestine_UN are no longer bound by the Oslo Accords and all understandings incl security. The three judges of that chamber — Péter Kovács of Hungary, Marc Perrin de Brichambaut of France and Reine Adélaïde Sophie Alapini-Gansou of Benin — have no set deadline to hand down their decision but are expected to do so within 90 days.Judge Péter Kovács (Courtesy ICC-CPI/Max Koot)-Marc Perrin de Brichambaut. (Mikhail Evstafiev / Wikipedia)-Reine Adélaïde Sophie Alapini-Gansou (Courtesy: ICC-CPI)-Last week, the pretrial chamber surprisingly issued a document saying that Abbas’s comments about no longer being bound by agreements with Israel came to its attention, and it “requests Palestine to provide additional information on this statement, including on the question whether it pertains to any of the Oslo agreements between Palestine and Israel.”The chamber also “invite[d] Israel to respond to any additional information” Ramallah may provide by June 24.But Jerusalem, which has long argued that Palestine is not a sovereign state and therefore cannot transfer criminal jurisdiction over its territory to the Hague, is unlikely to accept the judges’ offer, lest any formal engagement with the court be seen as legitimizing it.Netanyahu has repeatedly denounced the ICC and declared thwarting a possible war crimes probe one of the new government’s top priorities.
Tel Aviv rally against annexation plan to go ahead after police backtrack on ban-The Times of Israel-Law enforcement want participants at Saturday evening protest limited to 2,000 although unclear how this would be enforced; Joint List chief won’t attend due to virus quarantine-By TOI staff-june 7,20-Today, 9:20 am
Police on Friday backtracked on a ban for a rally in Tel Aviv against Israel’s annexation plans, saying the protest can go ahead Saturday evening if social distancing regulations are maintained.According to the Haaretz daily, organizers have pledged to mark up the city’s iconic Rabin Square so that demonstrators stand separated, and have pledged to avoid blocking surrounding roads and to limit the number of participants to 2,000. It was unclear how this could be enforced. The event, titled, “No to the occupation, no to annexation, yes to democracy,” will kick off with a march from the Tel Aviv Art Museum to the square. The event was banned by police on Thursday, who said that current virus regulations did not permit marches despite there being no such clause in the rules. The ban was rescinded after meetings with organizers, who were asked not to advertise the event.Police reportedly issued a formal permit for the rally after talks with MKs from the Joint List party and left-wing activists who said that demonstrators would gather at the square in any case.Joint List leader Ayman Odeh speaks during a protest against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at Rabin Square in Tel Aviv on April 19, 2020. (Tomer Neuberg/Flash90)Joint List leader Ayman Odeh announced Friday that he would not be attending the rally as he remains in isolation after coming in contact with MK Sami Abou Shahadeh from his party who later tested positive for the coronavirus. Odeh said that even though he himself tested negative, he will remain quarantined under Health Ministry regulations.“Unfortunately, I will not be able to show you on Saturday night, but I urge every Arab and Jewish citizen to come out and protest against the danger of annexation and occupation and for peace and democracy,” Odeh said in a video message.Police forcibly broke up a rally late Thursday night, also at Rabin Square, against emergency coronavirus regulations, arresting 12 demonstrators. The protesters who were arrested had blocked traffic, attacked bystanders and police, and damaged property, the police said.Saturday night’s rally comes amid a wave of regional and international criticism of the planned Israeli annexation of parts of the West Bank under the peace plan being advanced by the Trump administration in the US.After more than a year of political deadlock and two inconclusive elections, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and rival Benny Gantz in April joined in a coalition government and under their agreement, from July 1 Netanyahu can move ahead with his annexation project.Much of the international community has already expressed strong opposition to the move and the US has also recently indicated that it wants Israel to slow down.Palestinians are vocal in their opposition to US President Donald Trump’s Middle East plan, which gives Israel the green light to annex Jewish settlements and the Jordan Valley in what is intended to be part of a negotiated process but may go ahead unilaterally.Palestinians in the West Bank on Friday rallied to mark 53 years since the 1967 Six Day War and protest against the Israeli government’s annexation plans.A Palestinian man throws a tire during clashes with Israeli soldiers in the West Bank village of Qusin near Nablus, June 5, 2020. (AP/Majdi Mohammed)In Tulkarem, in the northern West Bank, dozens of demonstrators waved Palestinian flags and chanted slogans. Israeli troops fired stun grenades and tear gas to repel protesters approaching a military checkpoint.Near Tubas, also in the northern West Bank, a protester was wounded in the head by a rubber bullet fired by Israeli forces, the Palestinian Red Crescent said. There was no immediate comment from the IDF.Further protests took place in the West Bank cities of Ramallah, Nablus, Jericho, and the Jordan Valley, an area which could be annexed as part of the Israeli plan.In the southern West Bank city of Hebron hundreds gathered, chanting against Israel and the US.Friday’s protests coincided with the anniversary of what Palestinians call the Naksa, the defeat of Arab countries by Israel in the Six Day War of June 1967.Agencies contributed to this report.
More Israelis oppose West Bank annexation than support it — survey-The Times of Israel-JUNE 7,20-Poll by dovish Geneva Initiative contradicts findings from another recent study, which saw a plurality of Israelis back the move-By TOI staff-Today, 8:33 pm
More Israelis oppose annexation of West Bank land than support it, and only 3.5% list it among their top priorities, according to a survey commissioned and published by the left-wing Geneva Initiative group. The opinion poll showed that 41.7% of the public oppose annexation while 32.2% support it, the group said in a statement on Sunday, hours after thousands rallied in Tel Aviv against the proposal. Some 48% believe such a move — planned for next month by the government in coordination with the Trump administration — would harm chances to achieve peace with the Palestinians, while just 13.8% think it would aid peace prospects.Just 3.5% mentioned annexation when asked about their top two priorities for the country. The economy was listed by 42.4% of respondents, public health by 24.6% and security by 17.4%.Even among backers of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party, only half support annexation, the survey found. The vast majority of supporters of Defense Minister Benny Gantz’s Blue and White party oppose it.The poll was conducted in early June among 621 respondents representing Israel’s adult population. The margin of error is 3.9% As part of their coalition agreement, Netanyahu and Blue and White chief Gantz, who is defense minister, agreed the government can begin moving forward with applying Israeli sovereignty to settlements and the Jordan Valley after July 1, a move expected to enjoy backing from a majority of lawmakers in the current Knesset.Much of the international community has already expressed strong opposition to the move, and the US has also recently intimated that it wants Israel to slow down.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu points at a map of the Jordan Valley as he gives a statement, promising to extend Israeli sovereignty to the Jordan Valley and northern Dead Sea area, in Ramat Gan on September 10, 2019. (Menahem Kahana/AFP)-Palestinians are vocal in their opposition to Trump’s plan, which gives Israel the green light to annex Jewish settlements and the Jordan Valley, in what is intended to be part of a negotiated process but may go ahead unilaterally. The step is also forcefully opposed by many Israelis, including settler leaders who joined the chorus of left-wing opposition to the proposal last week because of its eventual vision of an independent Palestinian state. The Geneva Initiative study contradicted another poll last month, in which 44.7 percent of respondents to an Israel Democracy Institute survey said they support or strongly support annexation. The poll found 31.8% oppose annexation, and 23.5% didn’t know or didn’t answer. A slight majority of 51.7% Jewish Israeli support annexation, the poll found, while among Arab Israelis, only 8.8% were in favor.Among Jews, 27.9% opposed annexation, and 20.4% didn’t know or didn’t answer. Among Arabs, 51.9% were opposed, and 39.4% didn’t know or didn’t answer. Support for annexation among Jews was unsurprisingly divided on political lines, with 71% of self-defined right-wing Jews backing it, along with 31% of centrists and only 8% of left-wingers, according to the IDI poll.

Islamic Jihad terror group buries ex-leader in Damascus-The Times of Israel-Ramdan Shalah led Iran-backed Palestinian organization from 1995 until 2018, when he was replaced by his deputy Ziad al-Nakhala, after falling into a coma following surgeryBy Agencies and TOI staff-june 7,20-Today, 10:27 pm
DAMASCUS, Syria — Palestinian terror group Islamic Jihad buried its former leader Ramadan Shalah in Syria Sunday, an AFP correspondent said, a day after he died in neighboring Lebanon. The 62-year-old died in a Beirut hospital before his body was transported to neighboring Syria, a Palestinian source said.He had been in a coma for more than three years after heart surgery.Shallah led the Iranian-backed group for over 20 years, after its founder, Fathi Shikaki, was shot dead in Malta in a 1995 attack widely attributed to Israel. In 2018, the group named Shallah’s deputy, Ziad al-Nakhalah, as a new leader.Ramadan Shallah was on the US “most wanted list” of terrorist suspects with a $5 million reward for information leading to his arrest or conviction.Dozens of mourners, including his successor Nakhala, gathered around his coffin draped in the group’s banner in the Mazzeh neighborhood of Damascus, after receiving special permission to gather despite the threat of novel coronavirus.A funeral procession then headed to a cemetery in the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp on the edge of the capital, where the Palestinian source said Shalah had wanted to be buried if not in his birthplace of the Gaza Strip. An AFP photographer saw his coffin lowered into a grave.Palestinian Islamic Jihad has offices in Syria and Lebanon, but most of its activities are focused in the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip.“We pledge to continue the route of resistance until we liberate Palestine with the allies in Syria, Iran and Hezbollah,” al-Nakhalah told the Beirut-based Al-Mayadeen TV during the funeral. In a statement, Islamic Jihad in Gaza bid farewell to “the great leader whose history… we recall since the founding of the Jihad movement.”Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas paid tribute to Shalah on Saturday night, saying the Palestinian people had “lost a great national figure”, Palestinian news agency WAFA reported.Earlier Sunday Hebrew media reports cited Palestinian sources and media as saying that Egypt had given permission to transfer Shalah’s body to the Gaza Strip for burial. Gaza shares a border with Israel and Egypt although the two countries coordinate on security concerning the Palestinian enclave.Former defense minister MK Naftali Bennett, leader of the Yamina party that is now in the opposition, tweeted criticism of the government for reportedly allowing Shalah to be buried in Gaza.“Why did you approve the transfer of the body of Palestinian Islamic Jihad leader Ramadan Shalah for burial in the Gaza Strip.

Why not make it conditional on the release of the deceased IDF soldiers Hadar Goldin and Oron Shaul? Why give our enemies a present for free?”The Hamas terror group is believed to be hold the remains of the two soldiers who were killed during the 2014 Operation Protective Edge when the IDF battled against Hamas-led Palestinian groups in Gaza.Yamina party leader MK Naftali Bennett, at a press conference in Jerusalem on May 14, 2020. But in recent months it has remained committed to an unofficial truce brokered by regional mediators between Israel and Hamas, the Islamic terror group ruling Gaza.PIJ previously has taken part in numerous suicide bombings, shootings and rocket attacks that killed dozens of Israelis.
