EU drug
agency starts evaluating Pfizer vaccine for 12- to 15-year olds-European
Medicines Agency says it will carry out ‘accelerated assessment of
data’ on shot when submitted by its producers-By AFP and TOI staff-3 May
2021, 7:50 pm
Europe’s medicines watchdog said Monday that it
had begun evaluating the use of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for
12- to 15-year-olds, after a similar request in the United States. Its
possible authorization for children is seen as a crucial step toward
achieving herd immunity. The European Medicines Agency’s human medicines
committee “will carry out an accelerated assessment of data submitted by
the company that markets Comirnaty,” said an EMA statement — referring
to vaccine’s brand name. This included results from a large ongoing
clinical study involving adolescents from 12 years of age, the
Amsterdam-based agency said. The agency would announce its findings in
June “unless supplementary information is needed,” the statement
added.Pfizer and BioNTech on Friday asked the European regulator to
authorize their COVID-19 vaccine, after filing a similar request with
the US authorities earlier in April.Their vaccine is currently only
approved for use on people aged 16 and over. The move comes after phase 3
trial data showed the vaccine provided “robust antibody responses” and
was 100-percent effective in warding off the disease among those aged 12
to 15, the companies said.If approved, the green light would apply to
all 27 European Union member states.Pfizer and BioNTech added that they
also planned to seek clearance from “other regulatory authorities
worldwide.”No coronavirus vaccines are currently authorized for use by
children. While children and teenagers are less likely to develop severe
COVID, they make up a large part of the population, and inoculating them
— to prevent them from infecting others — is considered key to ending
the pandemic.Getting older children vaccinated before the next school
year begins would also ease the strain on parents juggling the demands
of homeschooling and work.“It’s very important to enable children (to
make) a return to their normal school lives and allow them to meet with
family and friends,” Ugur Sahin, co-founder and CEO Germany’s BioNTech
told German weekly Der Spiegel last week.BioNTech and Pfizer are also
racing to get their shot approved for younger kids, from six months
upwards. The BioNTech/Pfizer shot, based on mRNA technology, was the
first COVID-19 jab to be approved in the West late last year.Israel is
already making preparations to launch a vaccination drive of 12- to
15-year-olds following its adult inoculation campaign, which has given
the Pfizer-BioNTech shots to over half the population. Health officials
have said the program will start as soon as US authorities approve the
vaccines for use with children.Last month, Israel signed deals to
purchase millions of Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccine doses to ready
the country for another campaign that would also include young
adolescences. The Israeli Pediatric Associated has called for parents and
family doctors to vaccinate their children when the Pfizer-BioNTech
vaccine is approved for those children. Currently, the vaccine has
emergency authorization for use in people 16 and older.
104 North American Jews fulfill Jeremiah’s prophecy returning to Israel-by Video Manager | Apr 28, 2021 | News Videos
And
there is hope for your future —declares Hashem: Your children shall
return to their country. Jeremiah 31:16 (The Israel BibleTM)-104 Jewish
Americans and Canadians have made Aliyah on Monday. The newest
naturalized citizens of Israel arrived in the Holy Land via Nefesh
b’Nefesh charter flight. The Nefesh b’Nefesh organization enables Jewish
people in North America to become Israeli citizens through the Aliyah
process.“Honestly, it just feels really good to be home,” said one
arrival.“I dreamt about this since I was a child,” said another elderly
Olah.Another couple said that they made “100 trips to Israel” adding
that they “now feel like they’re part of the land.”The idea of the
Jewish people ingathering from the exile has been prophesied in the book
of Jeremiah:And there is hope for your future —declares Hashem: Your

to fly planeloads of medical aid to virus-wracked India-Shipments will
include oxygen generators, ventilators; non-government organizations
join effort; deliveries to arrive this week-By TOI staff-MAY 4,21-Today,
12:24 am
The Foreign Ministry said Monday that it is sending
planeloads of medical equipment, including respirators, oxygen
generators, and medicines to India, where the health system is
collapsing under a wave of resurgent coronavirus infectionsThe shipments
will include hundreds of oxygen generators, ventilators, and medical
equipment that are urgently needed by India, the ministry said in a
statement. The first batches will be sent Tuesday and the rest throughout
the week.“India is one of Israel’s closest and most important friends.
Especially in this difficult period that India is going through, we
stand by it and are sending life-saving equipment to our Indian
brethren,” said Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi.Several ministries and
other government bodies, including the Israeli and Indian embassies in
each country, were involved in setting up the operation, the ministry
said.In addition, the ministry’s Economics Division worked with key
organizations such as the Israel-India Chamber of Commerce, the
Israel-Asia Chamber of Commerce, the Manufacturers Association of
Israel, the Federation of Israeli Chambers of Commerce, and the
government-funded Israel Export Institute. The Startup Nation Central
non-profit called on Israeli companies that work with Indian
counterparts to join in the effort to build the Israeli aid
package.Additional help came from Amdocs, a software and communications
company, which donated 150 oxygen generators, the statement said. The
American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, which describes itself as
the largest Jewish humanitarian organization in the world, will also
donate equipment to India, including some for the Jewish community in
Mumbai.Last week the Kan public broadcaster reported that an unofficial
request for medical equipment, including oxygen supplies and various
drugs, was made to the Israeli embassy in India.Israel and India have
cooperated in the past on the coronavirus and last April, the New Delhi
government reportedly sent Israel five tons of the drugs
hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine, which are used to treat malaria. At
the time, the drugs were being reviewed in various countries as a
possible treatment for the coronavirus. On Sunday, India recorded a
slight drop in new infections with 392,488, down from a high of 401,993
in the previous 24 hours. It also reported 3,689 additional deaths,
bringing the total number of fatalities to 215,542. Experts believe both
figures are an undercount.Other countries, including the US and
Britain, have also said they will send assistance.
Minister said
to muzzle police chief request for Meron probe commission-Reports say
police document prepared before event specifically warned of danger at
the site of the deadly crush that killed 45 and wounded dozens-By TOI
staff-MAY 4,21-Today, 2:18 am
Public Security Minister Amir Ohana
reportedly told Israel Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai to drop a
request for a state commission of inquiry into the deadly Meron festival
disaster, Channel 13 News reported Monday. There have been increasing
demands for a state probe of the tragedy at Lag B’Omber celebrations
last week when 45 people were killed in a crush and over 150
injured.During a meeting of senior police commanders, Shabtai declared
that he would make a formal request to Attorney General Avichai
Mandelblit to set up a state commission of inquiry, the report said.At
some point during the Monday morning meeting, Ohana arrived and, after
learning of Shabtai’s intention, asked to speak with the chief in
private. When they returned to the room, Northern District Commander
Shimon Lavi also voiced his request for a state inquiry, at which point
Ohana asked to speak with him too, in private, according to the
report. What was said between the minister and the two police officers
was not reported but no request has been made by Shabtai to Mandelblit,
the report said.Police said in response that during the meeting Shabtai
had demanded that an investigative committee be established to examine
the circumstances of the disaster and the role of all relevant
organizations. Other options were also raised, including by Shabtai
himself, the statement said.Ohana spoke with the police chief and others
both before and after the meeting, but before any final decision was
taken on the matter the State Comptroller Matanyahu Englman announced a
special probe of the disaster, which is nonetheless not a state inquiry
commission.“Therefore, it was decided, at this stage, to wait for the
outcome,” the police said.A statement on behalf of Ohana said that “as
usual, in the past few days attempts are made to attribute to the
minister and police claims and actions that have no relation to the
truth. So also in this case.”Later in the day Attorney General,
Mandelblit ruled there is no legal obstacle that would prevent the
current caretaker government from forming a state commission of
inquiry.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to Hebrew media
reports, fears the political repercussions of such an inquiry. The
tragedy occurred early Friday, as thousands streamed through a narrow
walkway that was covered with metal flooring and may have been wet,
causing some people to fall underfoot during the rush for the exit. Some
apparently fell on the walkway and down a flight of stairs at its end,
toppling onto those below and precipitating a fatal crushing domino
effect. As attention moved from the tragedy of the lost lives, many of
who were children or teenagers, the focus was being directed on the
organization of annual Lag B’Omer events at Mount Meron where various
ultra-Orthodox sects hold bonfire ceremonies in adjacent compounds on
the side of the mountain around the gravesite of the 2nd-century sage
Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai. The site, the second-most visited religious site
in Israel after the Western Wall, appears to have become a kind of
extraterritorial zone, with separate ultra-Orthodox sects organizing
their own events and their own access arrangements, no overall
supervision, and police routinely pressured by government ministers and
ultra-Orthodox politicians not to object.Channel 13 reported that a
police assessment ahead of this year’s Lag B’Omer events warned of the
dangers of overcrowding at access points as well as the possibility of
structures collapsing. In particular, the document alerted of
overcrowding in the Toldot Aharon compound, the scene of the crush, and
urged that the area be expanded.“Despite the addition of extra
bleachers, it is evident that the area is too small to contain the
numbers of celebrants,” the document said. “There, preparations should
be made to expand it…and to widen the exit.”The order was not followed
through. The police document noted that the fire lighting ceremony that
occurs in the Toldot Aharon compound is not suitable for the location
“since the number of participants is more than the compound can
hold.According to Channel 13, a bonfire lighting ceremony in the
compound was permitted to have a maximum of 3,000 participants, whereas
in fact there were 12,000.In general, the document warned that taking
into account the space needed between each bonfire and the number of
different compounds set up, “we have reached the limit of capacity.”It
also noted that there is particularly dangerous overcrowding at Meron
between the hours 12.30 a.m. and 4.30 a.m.“Consideration should be given
to limiting the number of fires which will bring down the size of the
crowd at the mount,” the police document advised. The disaster happened
at around 1.00 a.m. Friday morning.Channel 13 reported police had
provided the National Center for the Development of Holy Places a list
of shortcomings at the site that needed to be corrected. However,
according to information obtained by the station, during a meeting to
approve this year’s celebrations the center’s chief engineer said that
all the faults were corrected. The minutes from the meeting have been
passed on to the Lahav 433 nation serious crime unit, the report said.A
police source told the station that the force was shown authorizations
showing that the shortcomings had been corrected. However, Channel 12
quoted the engineering firm that did the work as saying they had
provided police with a list of issues that needed fixing. The center,
which sits under the Religious Affairs Ministry refused to comment on
the report, the station said. The station further said that police fear
that some of the sects that operate compounds at Mount Meron may be
trying to remove evidence from the scene to disrupt the investigation.
Police have noticed unknown people who were seen taking documents from
Mount Meron after the disaster, the report said.Multiple reports in
Hebrew media outlets indicated that there had been immense pressure by
religious lawmakers ahead of the festivities to ensure that there would
be no limits placed on the number of attendees due to the COVID-19
pandemic. Some 100,000 ultra-Orthodox pilgrims ultimately attended the
event; a framework drawn up by the Health Ministry, in consultation with
other government officials, police, and others, would have limited the
event to 9,000 participants but was not implemented.
Rivlin said
set to ask Lapid to form coalition, won’t give mandate to
Bennett-Reports say president believes tasking Yamina leader with
building a government would be tantamount to giving Netanyahu a second
chance-By TOI staff-MAY 4,21-Today, 1:07 am
President Reuven
Rivlin will likely tap Yesh Atid chairman Yair Lapid with forming the
next government if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fails to do so by
the Tuesday night deadline, but will likely not consider offering it to
Yamina leader Naftali Bennett, according to Hebrew media
reports.Netanyahu was given the first opportunity to cobble together a
coalition, on April 6, after receiving 52 recommendations to Lapid’s
45.Rivlin, who as Israel’s president is tasked with mandating a lawmaker
to form a government, can give Netanyahu an extension after his 28 days
end Tuesday night, hand the mandate to another lawmaker, or send it to
the Knesset for a 21-day period, after which fifth elections would
automatically be called if no one can form a government. The president
prefers the second option, according to Hebrew media reports Monday, and
is slated to transfer the government-forming mandate to Lapid as he
received the second most recommendations when Rivlin consulted with
party representatives after the March 23.Rivlin could also offer Bennett
the chance to form a government, but the reports, citing senior
political sources, said the president was unlikely to take this route.
Even if Netanyahu and a majority of right-wing lawmakers choose to alter
their recommendations to Rivlin in order to back Bennett, the president
is not expected to transfer the mandate to the Yamina chair, the
reports said. This is because the move would largely be seen as an
attempt to provide an extension for Netanyahu to form the government
after he failed to do so for the past month, senior political figures
who have spoken with Rivlin told Channel 12 and Ha’aretz. Moreover, it
would nullify the initial recommendations made by parties following the
election, which are not meant to be subject to change.“There is no
reason why the mandate should not go to Lapid unless Bennett were to
publicly announce that he has no interest in a ‘change’ government,” one
senior political source told Haaretz, referring to the coalition of
anti-Netanyahu parties seeking to oust the Likud leader. While Bennett
insists that he prefers joining a right-wing government, he noted again
Monday that Netanyahu lacks the votes to form such a coalition and has
said that Yamina is negotiating with Lapid to form a unity government as
an alternative.“Rivlin will not lend a hand to a political ploy in
which Netanyahu will recommend Bennett, only to preserve the chances of
an incumbent prime minister to send Israel back to the polls. If the
scenario in which Netanyahu forms a right-wing government were possible,
one would have been formed already,” the source added. The official told
Haaretz that it was also unlikely that Rivlin would send the matter to
the Knesset to decide as this would likely be sentencing Israel to a
fifth election in barely two years. If the mandate goes to the Knesset,
an absolute majority, of at least 61 of the 120 MKs, would be needed to
vote in favor of a particular lawmaker to form the next government, and
“there is no chance that the (the majority-Arab) Joint List and Ra’am
parties will sign off on Bennett’s appointments,” the source said. With
less than two days remaining for him to form a coalition, Netanyahu said
Monday that he was ready to step aside as premier and let Bennett serve
as prime minister first in a rotation agreement — a proposal
immediately dismissed by Bennett, who said in response that Netanyahu
simply doesn’t have the votes.Meanwhile, opposition leader Lapid said he
expected Rivlin to task him with forming a government “if nothing
surprising happens” before Tuesday night, but that he would willing to
let Bennett serve first as prime minister in any rotation agreement
between them.Meanwhile, Channel 13 reported Monday night that Lapid has
offered Bennett to become prime minister first in their power-sharing
agreement for a period of 2 years and three months, after which Bennett
would be appointed foreign minister and Lapid would assume the
premiership.Lapid is also promising a senior portfolio for Yamina’s
Ayelet Shaked (either interior or public security), and two or three
additional portfolios for members of the seven-MK right-wing party, if a
government is formed.Lapid is also willing to give Bennett’s right-wing
bloc within a prospective unity coalition wide veto powers, the network
said.Netanyahu, by contrast, has offered that Bennett becomes prime
minister first in a rotation deal, but only for a year; a senior
portfolio for Shaked; and for Yamina to be eventually merged with Likud
in a future election race.Though Yamina won just seven seats in the
March election, Bennett has become a potential kingmaker and even
king. The last elections, the fourth since April 2019, ended in gridlock,
with Netanyahu’s right-wing religious bloc again coming short of a
ruling majority, in part because three right-wing parties ran with the
declared goal of replacing him.

Suspected balloon-borne bombs from Gaza land in
south for first time in months-Sappers called to remove devices that
touched down in a field just east of the Strip, amid rising tensions
between Israel and Palestinians-By Judah Ari Gross-MAY 4,21-Today, 12:16
am
Two balloons carrying suspected explosive devices that were
apparently launched from the Gaza Strip landed in southern Israel on
Monday, local authorities said in the first such attacks in
months.According to the Sha’ar Hanegev regional council, the suspected
bombs were found in agricultural fields in the community of Kfar Aza,
east of Gaza Residents of the area reported seeing additional balloons
overhead throughout the afternoon. It was not immediately clear where
they landed.Police sappers were called to remove the suspected
explosives from Kfar Aza.Once a regular phenomenon, balloons carrying
explosives and incendiary devices have largely stopped being launched
into Israel by Palestinian terrorist groups, following a ceasefire
brokered between Jerusalem and Hamas last year. These were the first such
balloons to land in Israel in several months. The apparent airborne
attack comes amid heightened tensions between Israel and Palestinian
groups over the Palestinian Authority’s decision to indefinitely
postpone elections planned for later this month. Hamas, the de facto
ruler of Gaza, has condemned the PA’s move, calling it a “coup.”Earlier
this month, terrorists in Gaza launched dozens of rockets at southern
Israel. Most of these landed in open fields where they caused no injury
or damage, but a few struck inside Israeli communities with shrapnel
hitting buildings and vehicles. No Israelis have been injured directly
by the rockets or shells, but a number of people were hurt while running
to bomb shelters or required medical assistance after suffering acute
panic attacks from the sirens.
Islamist party chief Abbas
condemns terror attack, calls victims ‘innocents’Unusual statement comes
amid mounting pressure on far-right leader Smotrich to accept coalition
with the conservative Arab Ra’am, which he has called ‘terror
supporting’-By Aaron Boxerman-3 May 2021, 11:19 pm
Ra’am party
chief Mansour Abbas implicitly condemned on Monday a recent Palestinian
terror attack at Tapuach Junction in the West Bank that left three
Israeli yeshiva students injured.Abbas said that the Israelis who were
shot on Sunday were “innocents” and said he hoped to one day live
together with them in peace. The three wounded Israelis were studying at
a yeshiva in the West Bank settlement of Itamar.“As one who has
formulated Ra’am’s vision, a vision of peace and mutual security,
partnership and tolerance between peoples, I unequivocally oppose any
harm to innocents and call for the preservation of human life and to
give hope that we can live together in peace,” Abbas said. However, his
comments sparked a backlash in his own party.“We stand completely behind
our people the Palestinians and condemn all the actions of the
occupation and the settlers against our people,” wrote fellow Ra’am MK
Walid Taha.“The position of Ra’am supports the establishment of an
independent Palestinian state with a capital in East Jerusalem,
including the Al-Aqsa mosque,” he said, referring to the Muslim holy
site on the Temple Mount.Sunday’s shooting was followed by several
apparent retaliatory attacks by Israeli settlers, including the storming
of a Palestinian village in the predawn hours of Monday morning, where
the settlers threw rocks and stun grenades, and started fires. The
conservative Islamist Ra’am is key to Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu’s hopes to remain in power and avoid a fifth round of
elections in little more than two years. In a rare move for an Arab
Israeli politician, Abbas has expressed willingness to back a right-wing
government in order to advance legislative priorities for his
community. While Abbas’s former colleagues in the predominantly Arab
Joint List party regularly denounce terror attacks against Israeli
soldiers and civilians, they most often append criticism of Israel’s
military rule over the Palestinians.Abbas did no such thing on Monday,
merely adding: “My path is tolerance and peace between peoples and
nations, and I have always worked to reconcile people in every legal way
without quarrels and without wars, including within Arab
society.”Abbas’s statements come as the clock winds down on Netanyahu’s
mandate to form a new government. The premier has until midnight on
Tuesday to form one, or else risk seeing one of his rivals take his
seat.It remains unclear whether Netanyahu can yet form a coalition,
however. Religious Zionism party leader Bezalel Smotrich — whose seven
seats are key to any right-wing, Netanyahu-led government — is
vehemently opposed to any government that depends on Ra’am’s support.“We
will not be a partner in any government that leans actively or by the
abstention of Ra’am or other terror supporters,” Smotrich said last
month.Channel 12 said Smotrich was unswayed by Abbas’ remarks.Ra’am
party officials had previously ruled out supporting Smotrich’s anti-Arab
party in government. But Abbas has backtracked in recent days, hinting
that he would be willing to back Smotrich from outside the
government. With the risk that Netanyahu will be forced to return his
mandate to President Reuven Rivlin approaching with each passing day,
some far-right rabbis have come out in favor of a government backed by
the Islamists. The ultra-nationalist Rabbi Tzvi Tau released a letter in
which he expressed grudging support for Ra’am playing a role in a
Netanyahu-led government. It would be a “desecration of the Lord’s name”
for Ra’am to enter the government, he conceded, but that would be
trumped by the “sanctification of God’s name” that would ensue should
Netanyahu remain in power.“The sanctification will be greater than the
desecration,” wrote Tau, who directs the Har Hamor Yeshiva and whose
Noam faction within Zionist Union campaigned almost exclusively on
opposing gay rights.Others, however, have backed Smotrich’s position.
Fifty-five rabbis signed a public petition condemning any partnership
with Ra’am in late April, including the prominent Rabbi Shlomo Aviner —
and the very same Tau who would later publicly support it.Rabbi Haim
Druckman, who directs the Or Etzion yeshiva, said in a video statement
on Monday that no Israeli government could rely on the support of those
whom he euphemistically deemed “others.”“Of course, our right-wing
government [must] depend on Jews who vote for it, and not others. No
‘others’ will crown our government…. The government must be based on
Jews,” Druckman said, sitting side-by-side with Smotric.According to

LONDON (AP) — Iran is
expected to be a key topic in talks Monday between US Secretary of State
Antony Blinken and his host in London, British Foreign Secretary
Dominic Raab. The two envoys donned face masks and fist-bumped before
heading into the talks, a day ahead of the Group of Seven leading
industrial nations’ first face-to-face discussions in two years,
involving foreign and development ministers. The UK holds this year’s
G-7 presidency.Blinken’s visit to London, his first since being
appointed by US President Joe Biden, comes amid mounting speculation of a
prisoner exchange deal with Iran. Prisoner exchanges are not uncommon
and were a feature of the 2015 nuclear accord between Iran and the
world’s leading powers. Biden has indicated that he is looking to
restart nuclear talks with Tehran after his predecessor, Donald Trump,
pulled the US out of the agreement. In Britain, there is particular
interest in the well-being of a British-Iranian woman, Nazanin
Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who last week was sentenced in Iran to an additional
year in prison, on charges of spreading “propaganda against the
system.”Touched down in London and glad to be welcomed by @USAinUK. It
was eight years ago that the UK, our indispensable Ally, last hosted the
@G7 presidency. It’s good to be back among partners and allies for
these discussions. pic.twitter.com/q1afyAxXNI — Secretary Antony Blinken
(@SecBlinken) May 2, 2021-British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said his
government is doing what it can, amid reports in Iran that Britain
would pay a 400 million-pound ($550 million) debt to secure
Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s release.“We, of course, make sure that we do
everything we can to look after the interests of Nazanin and all the
very difficult dual national cases we have in Tehran,” he said.Earlier
Monday, Blinken held bilateral talks with Japanese Foreign Minister
Toshimitsu Motegi on an array of subjects including the coronavirus
pandemic and the climate crisis, as well as raising concerns over North
Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs. On Tuesday, the full G-7 —
Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US — will meet
along with representatives from other countries, including Australia,
India and South Africa.Today, Republic of Korea Foreign Minister Chung
Eui-yong and I discussed our joint efforts to combat the climate crisis
and COVID-19. We also stressed trilateral cooperation with Japan to
address shared security challenges, including the denuclearization of
the Korean Peninsula. pic.twitter.com/eubpea8K9z — Secretary Antony
Blinken (@SecBlinken) May 3, 2021-Ahead of the gathering, German Foreign
Minister Heiko Maas warned that “authoritarian states” around the world
are “trying to play us against each other,” and that breaches of
international law have become commonplace.“It is important that we hold
our values of democracy, state of law, human rights, and a global order
based on rules against them, united and credibly,” he said. Before the
meeting, Britain’s Foreign Office said the G-7 ministers will invest $15
billion in development finance over the next two years to help women in
developing countries access jobs, build resilient businesses, and
recover from the coronavirus pandemic. They are also expected to
establish new targets to get 40 million more girls into school and 20
million more girls in poorer nations reading by the age of 10, by 2026.
Palestinians
torch vehicle used in shooting attack as IDF arrives to seize
it-Clashes break out between Palestinians and soldiers who converge on
West Bank village of Aqraba to seize grey van-By Judah Ari Gross and TOI

The vehicle that is believed to have
been used in a drive-by shooting attack at a northern West Bank junction
leaving three Israelis wounded was found outside a nearby Palestinian
village on Monday.Photos of the car began circulating on Palestinian
social media showing that it was hit by at least two bullets, one of
which shattered the back windshield and the other hit the trunk door.
That matched the claims by soldiers at the scene, who said they returned
fire at the vehicle after the driver shot and gravely wounded two
Israeli teenagers, and a third lightly.Shortly after the spotting of the
vehicle outside the town of Aqraba, Israel Defense Forces troops
arrived at the scene in order to confiscate the evidence. Clashes
subsequently broke out between the soldiers and Palestinian locals, who
managed to set the van alight before it was seized by the troops.Channel
12 reported that the security establishment believes the grey Hyundai
belongs to a Hamas member who lives in Aqraba and that forces will be
able to track down the suspect in the coming day.The military and Shin
Bet security service, meanwhile, were continuing their search efforts on
Monday for the terrorists who committed the shooting attack on Sunday
evening at Tapuah Junction. The IDF had initially said that it was
believed there was only one assailant behind the attack, but on Monday
said they were looking for more than one suspect.According to Beilinson
Hospital, where the three were taken, one of the victims, Yehuda Guetta,
19, from Jerusalem, remained in critical condition as of Monday
morning, with a head wound, and doctors fearing for his life.Benaya
Peretz, 19, from Beit She’an, who was shot in the back, remained in very
serious condition. The third victim, Amichai Hala from Safed, also 19,
was released from the hospital to recover from his wounds at home. The
attack came amid heightened tensions in the West Bank after the
Palestinian Authority announced it was indefinitely delaying elections
planned for later this month, blaming the decision on ostensible Israeli
refusal to allow PA voting in East Jerusalem. The IDF also bolstered its
forces in the West Bank for the month of Ramadan, a period that
regularly sees an uptick in violence.Sunday’s shooting was followed by
several apparent retaliatory attacks by Israeli settlers, including the
storming of a Palestinian village in the predawn hours of Monday
morning, where they threw rocks and stun grenades, and started
fires.Clashes broke out between the residents of Jaloud village and the
Israelis from the nearby Shiloh settlement, whereupon the Israel Defense
Forces and Border Police attempted to break up the fighting by firing
rubber-coated bullets and other riot dispersal weapons — though only at
the Palestinians, injuring four of them in the process.Eleven
Palestinian residents of the village were arrested by the IDF. No
settlers were arrested, even though several police vehicles’ tires were
punctured by the Israelis.
