House press secretary tests positive for COVID-19-Jen Psaki was last in

WASHINGTON (AP) — White House press secretary Jen Psaki said
Sunday she has contracted COVID-19.She said she was last in contact with
US President Joe Biden on Tuesday, when she met him in the White House.
Psaki said they were more than 6 feet apart and wearing masks.Psaki was
not traveling with Biden, who was in Rome this weekend for the Group of
20 summit and is headed to Glasgow, Scotland, on Monday for a UN
climate summit.Psaki, 42, had planned to travel with the president but
scrapped the trip just as he was set to depart for Europe after learning
that members of her household had tested positive for COVID-19.“Since
then, I have quarantined and tested negative (via PCR) for COVID on
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday,” Psaki said in a statement.
“However, today, I tested positive for COVID.”Psaki said she is only
exhibiting mild symptoms.“While I have not had close contact in person
with the President or senior members of the White House staff since
Wednesday – and tested negative for four days after that last contact — I
am disclosing today’s positive test out of an abundance of
transparency,” Psaki said.White House staff and others traveling with
the president have been undergoing daily tests for COVID-19 since before
departing Washington and are all fully vaccinated. Many officials have
also received booster shots, due to the close-quarters environment and
frequent travel associated with their work.Biden got his COVID-19
booster on Sept 27, shortly after federal regulators approved the third
dose for many Americans.

‘Anti-vaxx
doctors’ advised late COVID-denier activist not to get treated —
TV-Health Ministry internal document probing Hai Shoulian’s death finds
that leading physicians who oppose the COVID vaccine were in close
contact with him in hospital-By TOI staff-OCT 31,21-Today, 11:03 pm
A
vocal opponent of vaccines against the coronavirus who died in
September of COVID-19 received advice from doctors not to take
life-saving treatment, according to a Sunday television report.Hai
Shoulian, 57, who remained defiantly opposed to vaccines until his
death, was in contact with several doctors while he was hospitalized
with a severe case of COVID-19, Channel 12 news reported.According to an
internal Health Ministry document, Shaulian was advised to receive
different treatment than what the doctors at the hospital where he was
being treated had prescribed. The document, which summarized a probe by
the ministry’s Committee for Prevention of Misleading the Public in
Health Product Advertising, noted that the doctors’ advice may have
harmed Shoulian, and contributed to the worsening of his condition. The
doctors, reported to have been acquainted with Shoulian, also advised
him not to get vaccinated, according to the network.“These doctors are
among the leaders of the anti-vaccination movement… and now it has
ramped up — they actively and in real-time intervened in the care of a
patient who listened to their advice and was not vaccinated,” the
document read, according to Channel 12.“It is possible that these
actions even caused harm to the point of death for the patient, who
relied on their advice,” the committee wrote. The advice given to
Shoulian included breathing exercises, inhaling tea steam, and taking
vitamins, while also refusing hospital treatment.Channel 12 named some
of the doctors as Avshalom Carmel, Michal Haran, and Arieh Avni, the
latter of whom had his medical license revoked after he reportedly
forged virus immunization certificates. In a Facebook post shortly before
his death that included a photo of him hooked up to an oxygen
concentrator, Shoulian said, “The situation is most critical. I’m
incapable of speaking or responding to people. I have no oxygen and am
unable to stabilize.”Shoulian said he believed that, “with God’s help,”
he would recover in two to three weeks and railed at the government’s
Green Pass system, which limits entry to many venues and events to those
who are vaccinated, recovered from COVID, or who present a negative
coronavirus test result.“It has nothing to do with the coronavirus. It
has nothing to do with vaccines. It has to do with coercion,” he said.In
a video, Shoulian claimed police tried to poison him after he was
arrested during a recent protest against the Green Pass.“I’m telling
you, this is an attempt to wipe me out and if something happens to me
know that’s exactly what happened,” he said.Following his death, other
opponents of the coronavirus vaccines made similar unfounded claims
about his death, with numerous Facebook users writing on his final post
that he was murdered. The Times of Israel
Two Jewish employees
behind push to cancel Google’s $1.2 billion Israel contract-Ariel Koren
and Gabriel Schubiner say deal to provide Jewish state with cloud-based
data storage centers will contribute to surveillance of Palestinians and
settlement expansion-By Eliyahu Kamisher-1 November 2021, 1:32 am
J.
The Jewish News of Northern California via JTA — Two Jewish Google
employees are playing a key role in a worker petition calling on Google
and Amazon to cancel a joint contract to build cloud-based data centers
on behalf of the Israeli government. The massive, $1.2 billion contract,
dubbed Project Nimbus, was signed in May and is one of Israel’s largest
technology infrastructure ventures. Google and Amazon will transfer
Israel’s data into six cloud-based storage centers over the next several
years. The open letter says the deal violates the signers’ “core values”
by allegedly fostering surveillance of Palestinians and encouraging the
expansion of Jewish settlements.“For me as a Jewish employee of Google,
I feel a deep sense of intense moral responsibility,” said Ariel Koren,
who lives in San Francisco and works in Google’s education division.
“When you work in a company, you have the right to be accountable and
responsible for the way that your labor is actually being used.”Koren,
along with Gabriel Schubiner, a New York–based Google software engineer,
helped devise the open letter calling for the two mammoth companies to
end the Project Nimbus contract. It appeared in the opinion section of
the UK’s Guardian news site on October 12, claiming it had been signed
by 390 Google and Amazon employees.“As workers who keep these companies
running, we are morally obligated to speak out against violations of
these core values,” the statement read. “This technology allows for
further surveillance of and unlawful data collection on Palestinians,
and facilitates expansion of Israel’s illegal settlements on Palestinian
land.”According to Koren, over 1,000 employees have now signed the
petition, although they remain anonymous and J. is unable to verify the
number of supporters. Koren and Schubiner are two of only three total
signatories who have chosen to identify themselves publicly. The pair of
Jewish Googlers said their identity as Jews is essential to speaking out
on behalf of Palestinian colleagues who fear retribution.“As Jews,
we’re relatively more insulated against charges of antisemitism that
often come up in these discussions,” said Schubiner. “I do recognize the
privilege that comes with my identity and talking about this issue
without fear of retaliation.” I do recognize the privilege that comes
with my identity and talking about this issue without fear of
retaliation. The push to end the Project Nimbus contract faces an uphill
battle. The contract reportedly contains a safeguard preventing the tech
giants from pulling out due to boycott pressure. In a short statement
to J., Amazon Web Services said the company is “focused on making the
benefits of our world-leading cloud technology available to all our
customers, wherever they are located.” Google did not reply to a request
for comment.Koren and Schubiner pointed to previous instances when
Google responded to employees’ pressure, ending the renewal of a
contract with the Pentagon and discontinuing work on a censored Chinese
search engine. Schubiner added that if the contract with the Israeli
government holds, he hopes the open letter will push Google and Amazon
toward more transparency in their business contracts and the adoption of
ethical standards for future data storage projects.Koren and Schubiner
told J. they have been working to convince Jewish tech employees who are
not currently active in criticizing Israel to take a stance on the
contract. “Trying to have these kinds of conversations, while also
listening and being respectful with coworkers, is difficult,” said
Schubiner. “It’s not an easy conversation. One that, frankly, Google has
tried to avoid and tried to shut down because they think it is so
difficult.”Public support for the appeal has been largely confined to
hardline anti-Zionist critics of Israel, including Jewish Voice for
Peace and American Muslims for Palestine. These groups back a complete
boycott of the state. Both Koren and Schubiner declined to comment when
asked if they want Google and Amazon to divest from Israel outside of
Project Nimbus. The two are also members of Jewish Diaspora in Tech, a
coalition of left-wing Jews who say they have felt ostracized from
Jewish tech spaces due to their highly critical positions on Israel and
Zionism. Schubiner said the killing of George Floyd and the Black Lives
Matter protests in 2020 forced him to reassess the division between his
personal life and his work at Google.“I was kind of shocked to find that
the conversations about equity that we tried to have in that [Jewish
Google] space were very quickly derailed into conversations that used
antisemitism as a means to avoid talking about other types of racial
equity,” Schubiner said. Now he says around 200 people have joined the
internal Google group for Jewish Diaspora in Tech.“I don’t know if the
demand to drop Nimbus is fully achievable,” added Schubiner. “It’s up to
the workers to decide that this is an issue that we care about enough
to really put our own skin in the game.”This article was originally

Israel cyber authority says it warned hosting
company it was vulnerable to hack-National Cyber Directorate told
CyberServer ‘several times’ it could be targeted, ahead of Black Shadow
hackers’ personal data breach of Israeli LGBT site and others-By TOI
staff and AFP-OCT 31,21-Today, 11:13 pm
Israel’s National Cyber
Directorate said Sunday that it had warned the Israeli internet hosting
company breached by a hacker group linked to Iran over the weekend that
it was vulnerable to an attack.Libi Oz, a spokeswoman for the
government-funded agency, said her office warned CyberServe “several
times.”CyberServe did not respond for a request to comment, but said in a
statement Saturday that it had been dealing with “an Iranian cyber
terror event.”“From the moment we got warning on the issue from the
National Cyber Directorate, even before the incident, we cooperated
fully and fulfilled all the directorate’s guidelines,” it said. The Black
Shadow hacking group, which in recent days has been leaking personal
information from Israeli websites hosted by CyberServe, demanded on
Sunday a ransom payment of $1 million in digital currency to stop the
online leak of personal information from the Israeli LGBT site Atraf.“If
we have 1 Millions $ in our wallet in the next 48 hours, we will not
leak this information and also we will not sell it to anybody,” Black
Shadow wrote on Telegram. On Saturday, the group dumped tens of thousands
of records online from the various sites it had penetrated, including
1,000 user profiles from Atraf. The leaked records included users’ HIV
status, sexual orientation, and unencrypted passwords. The hackers said
on Sunday that the information leaked online so far represented just 1
percent of the data acquired in the breach.Ran Shalhavi, CEO of The
Aguda — The Association for LGBTQ Equality in Israel, said his
organization had extended its emergency hotline hours to deal with a
flood of worried callers.“They are exposed, and if they are in the
closet, they are exposed to situations they never knew before,” he said,
adding that the association was working with different groups to
“reduce damage.”Cyber intelligence researcher Ohad Zaidenberg said the
breach appeared to be linked to a hack of Israeli insurance firm Shirbit
last year, also claimed by Black Shadow, as well as an attack in March
on Israeli insurance company KLS Capital Ltd.“Now they are doing
something relatively similar,” Zaidenberg said. “We know that attack on
Shirbit was Iranian, and therefore we can say, if it’s the same attacker
and that attack was Iranian, this attack is Iranian.”Israeli media said
Black Shadow is a group of Iran-linked hackers who use cyberattacks for
criminal ends. The group breached Israel’s Shirbit insurance firm in
December last year, stealing data. It demanded a $1 million ransom and
began leaking the information when the firm refused to pay.Keren
Elazari, a cybersecurity expert and researcher at Tel Aviv University,
agreed that the attack appeared to be Iranian.“A big part of the hacks
we’ve seen is not about ransom,” she said. “It’s about embarrassing
Israeli companies, embarrassing Israeli citizens.”She said the pandemic
had opened new vulnerabilities for Israeli firms, as working from home
offered less cybersecurity and has “multiplied the opportunity for
attacks.”The cyberattack also hit websites, including of Israeli public
transportation companies Dan and Kavim, a children’s museum and public
radio online blog, with the sites still available to users by midday
Sunday. The attack also targeted the tourism company Pegasus, and Doctor
Ticket, a service that could have sensitive medical data, according to
Hebrew media. The new attack comes after an unprecedented, unclaimed
cyberattack wrought havoc on Iran’s gas distribution system this week,
which Tehran officials have blamed on Israel and the United States.Iran
and Israel have been engaged in a so-called “shadow war,” including
several reported attacks on Israeli and Iranian ships that the two have
blamed on each other, as well as cyberattacks. In 2010, the Stuxnet virus
— believed to have been engineered by Israel and its ally the US —
infected Iran’s nuclear program, causing a series of breakdowns in
centrifuges used to enrich uranium.
Gasoline prices to rise at
midnight, hitting 3-year high-Due to increased global demand for fuel,
costs increase by 23 agorot, reaching NIS 6.62; steady hike seen since
May 2020, after first COVID-19 lockdown-By TOI staff-0CT 31,21-Today,
9:42 pm
The price of gasoline will rise by 23 agorot
(approximately 7 cents) at midnight on Sunday, marking a 3.6 percent
rise in the cost of fuel from a self-service pump. The new price of NIS
6.62 ($2) per liter of 95 octane gasoline (including VAT), continued an
upward trend since May last year, when the price was NIS 4.79
($1.4).While the new price broke a three-year high, it was still far
from the record of NIS 8.25 ($2.65) in 2012, according to
Hebrew-language media reports. The trend is expected to continue, given
higher global demand for fuel, according to the Calcalist business
daily. The sudden decline in gas prices seen in May last year was blamed
on the onset of the coronavirus pandemic and related lockdowns.
G20
disappoints on key climate target as global hopes turn to Glasgow
confab-UK’s Boris Johnson calls latest commitments to limiting global
warming ‘drops in a rapidly warming ocean’; UN chief says he leaves Rome
‘with my hopes unfulfilled’-By Alice Ritchie and Alvise ARMELLINI
Today, 9:16 pm
ROME, Italy (AFP) — The G20 major economies
committed on Sunday to the key goal of limiting global warming to 1.5
degrees Celsius, but disappointed leaders warned that more was needed to
make a success of UN climate talks, beginning in Glasgow.British Prime
Minister Boris Johnson, the host of the COP26 summit that opened on
Sunday, said the pledge from world leaders after two days of talks in
Rome was “not enough,” and warned of the dire consequences for the
planet.“If Glasgow fails, the whole thing fails,” he told reporters,
saying the G20 commitments were “drops in a rapidly warming ocean.”UN
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also expressed disappointment at the
outcome of the G20 summit, saying he left Rome “with my hopes
unfulfilled — but at least they are not buried.”The G20 nations between
them emit nearly 80 percent of carbon emissions, and a firm commitment
on action was viewed as vital for the success of the UN’s COP26.In a
final communique, the G20 reaffirmed its support for the goals in the
landmark 2015 Paris climate accords, to keep “the global average
temperature increase well below 2 degrees and to pursue efforts to limit
it to 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels.”They said this would
require “meaningful and effective actions and commitment by all
countries, taking into account different approaches,” while they also
promised action on coal. But experts say meeting the 1.5-degree target
means slashing global emissions nearly in half by 2030 and to “net-zero”
by 2050 — and the G20 set no firm date, speaking only of reaching the
goal of net-zero “by or around mid-century.”Italian Prime Minister Mario
Draghi, who hosted the G20 talks, said he was “proud of these results,
but we must remember that it’s only the start.”Eyes now turn to Glasgow,
where more than 120 heads of state and government, including US
President Joe Biden, India’s Narendra Modi, and Australia’s Scott
Morrison, who were heading there from Rome.-Lacking ambition-The G20
leaders did agree to end funding for new unabated coal plants abroad —
those whose emissions have not gone through any filtering process — by
the end of 2021.But environmental campaign group Greenpeace slammed the
final statement as “weak, lacking both ambition and vision,” saying G20
leaders “failed to meet the moment.”“If the G20 was a dress rehearsal
for COP26, then world leaders fluffed their lines,” said Executive
Director Jennifer Morgan.Friederike Roder, senior director at
anti-poverty group Global Citizen, told AFP the summit had produced
“half-measures, rather than concrete actions.”European leaders pointed
out that given the fundamental divisions among the world’s most advanced
nations, a joint commitment to what was the most ambitious Paris goal
was a step forward.“I hear all the very alarmed talk on these subjects.
I’m myself worried and we are fully mobilized,” said French President
Emmanuel Macron.“But I would like us to take a step back and look at the
situation where we were four years ago,” when former US president
Donald Trump announced he was pulling out of the treaty.Draghi said that
the needle had moved markedly even in the past few days, including by
China — by far the world’s biggest carbon polluter.Beijing plans to make
its economy carbon neutral before 2060, but has resisted pressure to
offer nearer-term goals.India, meanwhile, argues that if net-zero by
2050 is the global goal, then rich countries should be carbon neutral 10
years earlier, to allow poorer, emerging nations a larger carbon
allowance and more time to develop.‘Dream big’Earlier on Sunday, Draghi,
Britain’s Prince Charles, and Pope Francis had all called on G20
leaders — and by extension, the wider group of world leaders meeting in
Glasgow — to think big.Calling climate change “the defining challenge of
our times,” Draghi warned: “Either we act now… or we delay acting, pay a
much higher price later, and risk failing.”Pope Francis, who is
outspoken on the issue and received several G20 leaders at the Vatican
this weekend, said: “This is a moment to dream big, to rethink our
priorities… The time to act, and to act together, is now!”

Biden warns US will respond to Iranian actions, including
drone attacks-‘We will continue to respond,’ says US president; American
officials blamed Tehran for UAV assault on the al-Tanf base earlier
this month-By TOI staff and AP Today, 11:19 pm
US President
Joe Biden said Sunday that the United States will respond to actions
Iran has taken against Washington’s interests, including recent drone
strikes.“With regards to the issue of how we’re going to respond to
their actions against interest of the US, whether they are drone strikes
or anything else, is we’re going to respond,” Biden said in a press
conference following the G20 summit in Rome.“We will continue to
respond,” he added.Biden’s statement comes after American officials
blamed Iran for a drone attack on a remote US outpost in Syria.
Officials said Monday that the US believes Iran resourced and encouraged
the attack, but that the drones were not launched from Iran.No deaths
or injuries were reported as a result of the attack on October 20.In
retaliation, the US Treasury Department on Friday announced new
penalties against two senior members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps
and two affiliated companies for supplying lethal drones and related
material to insurgent groups in Iraq, Lebanon, Yemen, and Ethiopia. This

during a news conference Monday. He called it a “complex, coordinated
and deliberate attack” and said the US has seen similar ones before from
Shia militia groups that are backed by Iran. But he would not go into
specifics and said he had no update on the munitions used in the
attack.Kirby also declined to say whether troops were warned ahead of
time or whether the US intends to make a military response.“The
protection and security of our troops overseas remains a paramount
concern for the secretary,” Kirby said, referring to US Defense
Secretary Lloyd Austin, “and that if there is to be a response, it will
be at a time and a place and a manner of our choosing, and we certainly
won’t get ahead of those kinds of decisions,Pro-Iran media outlets have
been saying that the attack on Tanf was carried out by “Syria’s allies” —
an apparent reference to Iran-backed groups — in retaliation for an
attack days earlier near the historic Syrian town of Palmyra. Israel has
been blamed for the attack. US officials say America was not
involved. The al-Tanf attack came in a period of rising tensions with
Iran. The Biden administration this week said international diplomatic
efforts to get Iran back into negotiations to return to a 2015 nuclear
deal were at a “critical place,” and that patience is wearing thin. But
Washington is also eager to bring Iran back to the negotiating table. The
last major Iranian attack on US forces was in January 2020, when Tehran
launched a barrage of ballistic missiles on al-Asad air base in Iraq.
US and coalition troops were warned of the incoming missiles and were
able to take cover, but more than 100 US service members received
traumatic brain injuries as a result of the blasts. That attack was in
response to the US drone strike earlier that month near the Baghdad
airport that killed Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani and Iraqi militia
leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.Two months after the al-Asad assault, US
fighter jets struck five sites in retaliation, targeting Iranian-backed
Shiite militia members believed responsible for the January rocket
attack.
Saudi Arabia: Dealing with Hezbollah-dominated Lebanon is
‘pointless’As Gulf animus grows, Prince Faisal slams ‘continuous
dominance of Hezbollah over the political system’ and Lebanese
government’s inability to steer country ‘out of this tunnel’-By AFP-31
October 2021, 9:52 pm
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — The Gulf diplomatic
crisis with Lebanon deepened Sunday, with Saudi Arabia saying dealing
with Beirut was “pointless,” due to Iran-backed Hezbollah’s dominance,
and the UAE pressing its citizens to leave the country. The developments,
sparked by Lebanese Information Minister George Kordahi’s remarks on
the Yemen war, have dealt a fresh blow to crisis-hit Lebanon, where a
fragile government is struggling to secure international aid, including
from wealthy Arab countries.“There is a crisis in Lebanon with the
dominance of Iranian proxies over the scene,” Saudi Prince Faisal bin
Farhan told Saudi Arabia’s Al-Arabiya television in an interview on
Sunday.“This is what worries us and makes dealing with Lebanon pointless
for the kingdom and for, I think, Gulf countries,” he said.Kordahi, who
was nominated by the Marada Movement — a Christian party allied to
Hezbollah — said Yemen’s Houthi rebels were “defending themselves…
against an external aggression,” and slammed as “futile” a Saudi-led
military intervention in Yemen. The comments were aired this week, but
made in August, before he became a minister.Saudi Arabia has expelled
Lebanon’s envoy and recalled its ambassador from Beirut, with Bahrain
and Kuwait quickly following suit. The United Arab Emirates has recalled
its diplomats from Lebanon in “solidarity” with the kingdom, and on
Sunday, it urged its citizens to leave the country “as soon as
possible.”Saudi Arabia also suspended all imports from Lebanon. The
foreign ministry said it took the measures after the “insulting” remarks
on the Yemen war, but also due to the influence of Lebanon’s
Iran-backed Shiite Hezbollah terrorist group.Prince Faisal said Sunday
that the problem in Lebanon was “the continuous dominance of Hezbollah
over the political system,” and the Lebanese government’s inability to
steer Lebanon “out of this tunnel.”The issue went “beyond a statement or
particular position,“ he said, adding that Hezbollah’s role requires
“reform and comprehensive revision.”The Lebanese information minister
said on Sunday that resigning was “out of the question.”Both Hezbollah
and the Marada Movement have rejected calls for his dismissal.Kordahi
has won plaudits in Yemen’s rebel-held Sanaa, with the Houthis on Sunday
putting up posters in support of the under-fire Lebanese minister.“Yes
George, the Yemen war is absurd,” said posters bearing his image that
were pasted onto billboards and lamp posts. The Houthis also plan to
rename a street in Sanaa after Kordahi, according to shopkeepers and
media reports in the city. The Saudi-led coalition that has included the
UAE and Bahrain intervened to prop up the Yemeni government in 2015,
after the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa in 2014.The war has killed
tens of thousands of people, and displaced millions.Rights groups have
accused both sides of war crimes.
Visiting Taibe, president says
silence on Arab crime wave ‘unacceptable’‘We must not get used to this,’
Herzog says, after more than 100 apparent homicides in the Arab
community this year; praises new government plan to curb violence-By TOI
staff-OCT 31,21-Today, 9:01 pm
President Isaac Herzog and his
wife Michal visited the Arab city of Taibe on Sunday, meeting its mayor
and urging action against the wave of violent crime plaguing Israel’s
Arab community.Mayor Shuaa Masarwa Mansour and members of the municipal
council held a short meeting with the president, before he toured other
areas of the city.Visiting a local high school, Herzog said: “It is
unacceptable for us as a society to remain silent in the face of
violence, escalation, and loss of personal safety suffered on a daily
basis by some citizens.“We must not get used to this. We must not remain
silent,” he added, speaking to a group of 10th graders.Arab Israelis
have long lamented a dearth of law and order in their cities and towns,
where they say police rarely care to solve homicides. But this year is
poised to be the bloodiest on record, with 104 killings in the community
recorded well before year’s end.On Sunday, the government advanced a
NIS 2.4 billion ($784 million) five-year plan to end the violence; some
more extreme measures, such as involving the Shin Bet security service
and expanding police powers, are also being examined. The plan will now
head to the Knesset, where it is set to be passed as part of the
upcoming budget.“I am glad that the government of Israel last week
passed an important resolution for a five-year plan for Arab society, to
reduce inequality,” Herzog said after inaugurating a new sports hall
built in the Arab city.“This resolution is very important for me.
Because the government is effectively saying that it is committed to
reducing inequality; it is committed to fixing allocations; it is
committed to total war against crime and violence in Arab society, which
is taking the lives of our citizens. Because this is our responsibility
and I say so as the head of state,” he added. On Friday, Herzog attended
an annual memorial for a 1956 massacre of Arab citizens of Israel by
border police officers in Kafr Qasim, and apologized on behalf of the
state for the killings.“His visit to the city of Taibe two days after
visiting Kafr Qasim is a message of virtue,” Masarwa Mansour said
Sunday.Herzog “keeps surprising us with his morality, and, above all, he
is the president of all of us, who believes in coexistence and the
shrinking of inequality for the benefit of minorities,” added the mayor.

'Extreme events are the new norm' ‘Uncharted territory:’
UN says last seven years on track to be hottest on record-World
Meteorological Organization warns global warming from greenhouse gas
emissions threatens ‘far-reaching repercussions for current and future
generations’-By Kelly MacNamara-OCT 31,21-Today, 2:53 am
GLASGOW,
United Kingdom (AFP) — The years from 2015 to 2021 are on track to be
the seven hottest on record, the World Meteorological Organization said
on Sunday, warning that the planet was heading into “uncharted
territory.”The preliminary WMO state of the climate report, launched as
the UN COP26 climate conference opens, said that global warming from
greenhouse gas emissions threatens “far-reaching repercussions for
current and future generations.”Based on data for the first nine months
of the year, the WMO said 2021 was likely to be between the fifth and
seventh warmest year on record — despite the cooling effect of the La
Nina phenomenon that lowered temperatures at the beginning of the
year.“From the ocean depths to mountain tops, from melting glaciers to
relentless extreme weather events, ecosystems and communities around the
globe are being devastated,” said United Nations Secretary-General
Antonio Guterres in a statement on the report. He added that the two-week
COP26 climate conference “must be a turning point for people and
planet”.The WMO found that the average temperature for 2021 was around
1.09 degrees Celsius higher than pre-industrial levels. And the average
temperature over the last 20 years (2002-2021) for the first time
exceeded the symbolic threshold of 1C above the mid-19th century when
humans began burning fossil fuels on an industrial scale. This will
“focus the minds of delegates at COP26 aspiring to keep global
temperature rise to within the limits agreed in Paris six years ago”,
said Stephen Belcher, chief scientist at Britain’s Met Office. The 2015
Paris Agreement saw countries agree to cap global warming at “well
below” 2C above pre-industrial levels, and 1.5C if possible.Since then
the world has seen a litany of weather disasters including
record-shattering wildfires across Australia and Siberia, a
once-in-a-thousand-years heatwave in North America and extreme rainfall
that caused massive flooding in Asia, Africa, the US and Europe.“Extreme
events are the new norm,” said WMO Secretary-General Petteri
Taalas.“There is mounting scientific evidence that some of these bear
the footprint of human-induced climate change.”Unimaginable’
consequences-The state of the climate report is a snapshot of planetary
health, including temperatures, extreme weather, glacier retreat and ice
melt.Residents walk along a dirt road in the Urus del Lago Poopo
indigenous community, which sits along the salt-crusted former shoreline
of Lake Poopo, in Punaca, Bolivia, Monday, May 24, 2021. Bolivia’s
second-largest lake dried up about five years ago, victim of shrinking
glaciers, water diversions for farming and contamination. (AP Photo/Juan
Karita)-Ocean acidification due to the absorption of carbon dioxide by
the seas was “unprecedented” in at least 26,000 years, the WMO said,
adding that this will lessen the ability of the oceans to take in more
C02.Meanwhile, sea level rise — mainly caused by the expansion of
warming sea water and the melting of ice on land — was at a new high. The
report is “shocking and deeply disturbing and yet another wake-up call
to world leaders that time has run out for talk”, said Jonathan Bamber,
Director of the Bristol Glaciology Centre, in comments to the Science
Media Centre. He said on the current trajectory, sea level rise could
exceed two meters (more than six feet) by 2100, which could displace
some 630 million people worldwide.“The consequences of that are
unimaginable,” said Bamber.“What is required now is profound and
comprehensive action by every nation and state actor to limit further
and deeper climate breakdown.”
Leaders of major polluters China
and Russia notably absent from climate confab-As things stand ‘there is a
serious risk that Glasgow will not deliver,’ warns UN Secretary-General
Antonio Guterres, calling reports of progress ‘an illusion’-By Agencies
and TOI staff-31 October 2021, 5:14 pm
More than 120 heads of
state and government are gathering in Glasgow this week for the Global
COP26 United Nations climate conference, including US President Joe
Biden, France’s Emmanuel Macron, India’s Narendra Modi and Israel’s
Naftali Bennett. But President Xi Jinping of China, the world’s largest
emitter, has not left his country during the COVID-19 pandemic and will
not be traveling to Scotland to join his global counterparts.Vladimir
Putin of Russia, another major polluter, will also be a no-show.The
Glasgow gathering, which started Sunday and runs to November 12, comes
as an accelerating onslaught of extreme weather events across the world
underscores the devastating impacts of climate change from 150 years of
burning fossil fuels. As things stand “there is a serious risk that
Glasgow will not deliver,” warned United Nations Secretary-General
Antonio Guterres in comments to the G20 meeting in Rome on
Saturday.“Several recent climate announcements might leave the
impression of a rosier picture,” he said. “Unfortunately, this is an
illusion.”Nations under pressure to reboot their COVID-lashed economies
continue to subsidize fossil fuels, even as they tout renewables.Much
rests on commitment from G20 leaders of richer nations whose economies
account for about 80 percent of carbon pollution. They have collectively
endorsed the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius
above pre-industrial levels, according to a final draft summit statement
obtained by AFP on Sunday. Some key G20 countries have not submitted
their updated plans yet, including India. Brazil, Mexico, Australia and
Russia have filed plans that are not in line with the Paris
Agreement.Details of how China will achieve its climate goals are now
emerging, and the world is poring over them to see how China will
strengthen its 2030 emissions reduction target, which currently involves
cutting emissions 65% per unit of gross domestic product, moving up the
date when the country’s emissions growth will peak, and setting
industrial production targets for other greenhouse gases, such as
methane.A delicate dance between the United States and China, and deft
diplomacy by France, was critical to reaching the Paris climate
agreement in 2015. Six years later, a growing rivalry threatens to
spiral down what had been a race to the top.And with poorer nations
least responsible for greenhouse gas emissions hit hardest by its
impacts, inequality overshadows the negotiations. The failure of rich
countries to cough up $100 billion a year starting in 2020 to help
developing nations lower emissions and adapt — a pledge first made in
2009 — will complicate the already fraught talks.Opening the Glasgow
gathering Sunday, summit president Alok Sharma said that the COP26
negotiations were the “last, best hope” to keep the goal of limiting
global warming to 1.5°C alive.“We know that our shared planet is
changing for the worse,” said Sharma at the opening ceremonExperts warn
that only transformative action in the next ten years will help stave
off far more cataclysmic impacts. And the warming of the planet did not
pause for the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused the UN meeting to be
delayed by a year.COP26 inherits its central goal from the landmark 2015
Paris Agreement, which saw countries agree to cap global warming at
“well below” 2°C above pre-industrial levels, and 1.5°C if possible. That
deal left many crucial details to be worked out, while emissions
reductions remain woefully insufficient to avert global warming. In
August a bombshell “code red” report from the world’s top climate
science body warned that Earth’s average temperature will hit the 1.5°C
threshold around 2030, a decade earlier than projected only three years
ago.And last week a UN report said even the latest, most ambitious
carbon-cutting commitments would still lead to “catastrophic” warming of
2.7°C.COP26 now marks the “last, best hope to keep 1.5°C in reach,”
said Sharma.“If we act now and we act together we can protect our
precious planet,” he said.
Biden meets Turkey’s Erdogan, urges
avoiding a crisis between their countries-US president reaffirms Turkish
value to NATO but raises concerns over country’s purchase of a Russian
missile defense system-By Zeke Miller and Josh Boak-31 October 2021,
5:00 pm
ROME (AP) — US President Joe Biden told Turkish President
Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday that their countries must better manage
disagreements after the partnership between NATO allies was tested by
Turkey’s threat to no longer recognize the US envoy and its purchase of a
Russian missile defense system.“We’re planning to have a good
conversation,” Biden said as the leaders appeared in front of
journalists before nearly an hour of closed-door talks. The president
did not answer questions about whether Turkey had grown too close to
Russia or about human rights. In the meeting, Biden reaffirmed Turkey’s
importance as a NATO ally as well as its defense partnership with the
US, but raised with Erdogan concerns about possession of the Russian
S-400 missile system, the White House said in a statement afterward. The
Turkish president has said he’s open to buying a second Russian missile
system, despite the controversy generated by the 2017 deal to acquire
the Russian-made system.Turkey’s role as a NATO ally has come under
sharp scrutiny in recent weeks.Erdogan at an October 23 rally said 10
foreign ambassadors who called for the release of a jailed
philanthropist should be declared persona non grata. The envoys,
including the US, French and German representatives, had previously
issued a statement seeking to resolve the case of Osman Kavala, a
businessman and philanthropist held in prison since 2017 despite not
having been convicted of a crime.Erdogan did not follow through on the
threat, but it reflected the rising tensions with the US.“I cannot
honestly say that there is a healthy process in Turkish-American
relations,” state-run Anadolu news agency quoted Erdogan as saying in
September.Military vehicles and equipment, parts of the S-400 air
defense systems, are unloaded from a Russian transport aircraft at
Murted military airport in Ankara, Turkey, July 12, 2019. (Turkish
Defense Ministry via AP, Pool)Erdogan’s office said in a statement that
the meeting was held in a “positive atmosphere” in which the leaders
expressed the “joint will to further strengthen and improve Turkey-US
relations and agreed to establish a common mechanism accordingly.”The
statement also said there was “satisfaction with the mutual steps taken
on climate change.”Turkey was kicked out of a US program to buy F-35
combat planes and defense officials were sanctioned after it bought the
Russian-made S-400 system. The US strongly objects to the use of Russian
systems within NATO alliance and says it poses a threat to the
F-35s.Turkey maintains the S-400s could be used independently without
being integrated into NATO systems and therefore pose no risk.Turkey is
also interested in purchasing American-made F-16 fighter aircraft, but
Biden was “very clear” with Erdogan that there is a process such sales
must go through, a senior Biden administration official told reporters
after the meeting, which took place as world leaders are in Rome for the
Group of 20 nations summit. The official spoke on condition of
anonymity to discuss the private talks. In a September interview with CBS
News, Erdogan said Turkey wasn’t given the option to buy American-made
Patriot missiles. He also said the US hadn’t delivered F-35 stealth jets
despite a payment of $1.4 billion. The White House statement said Biden
and Erdogan also discussed the political process in Syria, humanitarian
assistance for Afghans, elections in Libya, the situation in the Eastern
Mediterranean, and diplomatic efforts in the South Caucasus. And Biden
raised concerns about human rights and the rule of law in Turkey, and
called for the countries to cooperate more and handle “disagreements
effectively,” the White House said.Erdogan’s office said in a statement
that the meeting was held in a “positive atmosphere” in which the
leaders expressed the “joint will to further strengthen and improve
Turkey-US relations and agreed to establish a common mechanism
accordingly.”The statement also said there was “satisfaction with the
mutual steps taken on climate change.”Biden and Erdogan last met in June
at a NATO summit where they discussed the possibility of Turkey
securing and operating the international airport in Kabul, Afghanistan.
But those plans evaporated as the Taliban swiftly took control of
Afghanistan amid the US military departure. They did not meet in
September during the UN General Assembly session.
Associated Press-Blinken raised concerns about Taiwan with China-ZEKE MILLER and JOSH BOAK-Sun, October 31, 2021, 5:49 AM
ROME
(AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Chinese Foreign
Minister Wang Yi as part of the Group of 20 summit on Sunday — an
outreach designed to ensure that the intensely competitive relationship
between the world's two largest economies doesn't veer into open
conflicts.Senior State Department officials described the conversations
as candid, constructive and productive, saying that Blinken was clear
about U.S. concerns during the roughly hourlong meeting. The officials
insisted on anonymity to discuss the exchanges. One of the U.S. goals is
to maintain an open line of communication with China and set a virtual
meeting later this year between U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese
President Xi Jinping.Blinken said at the meeting that China has
increased tensions with regard to Taiwan and that America wants to
continue its “one-China policy,” which recognizes Beijing but allows
informal relations and defense ties with Taipei. During China's National
Day weekend in early October, China dispatched 149 military aircraft
southwest of Taiwan in strike group formations, causing Taiwan to
scramble aircraft and activate its air defense missile systems. Biden
alarmed China shortly after by saying that the U.S. has a firm
commitment to help Taiwan defend itself in the event of a Chinese
attack.Asked in a CNN town hall whether the U.S. would come to Taiwan’s
defense, Biden said, “Yes, we have a commitment to do that.” U.S.
officials immediately moved to clarify that there had been no change to
U.S. posture toward Taiwan.China and Taiwan separated during a civil war
in 1949. The U.S. cut formal diplomatic relations with Taipei in 1979
in order to recognize Beijing. The U.S. does not openly contest China’s
claim to Taiwan, but is committed by law to ensure the island can defend
itself and to treat all threats toward it as matters of grave
concern.Blinken noted that the G-20 summit is being followed by the
United Nations climate summit in Scotland, saying that the U.S. expects
China to curbs its greenhouse gas emissions as a responsible global
power for the good of the world.Trade issues did not come up in any
detail, as the conversation largely stayed in the political realm. Nor
was China's recent test launching of a nuclear-capable hypersonic
missile discussed by the two leaders.

DUBAI, United Arab
Emirates (AP) — The U.S. Air Force said Sunday it flew a B-1B strategic
bomber over key maritime chokepoints in the Mideast with allies
including Israel amid ongoing tensions with Iran as its nuclear deal
with world powers remains in tatters. The B-1B Lancer bomber flew
Saturday over the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf
through which 20% of all oil traded passes. It also flew over the Red
Sea, its narrow Bab el-Mandeb Strait and Egypt's Suez Canal. The Strait
of Hormuz has been the scene of attacks on shipping blamed on Iran in
recent years, while the Red Sea has seen similar assaults amid an
ongoing shadow war between Tehran and Israel. The Islamic Republic has
denied being involved in the attacks, though it has promised to take
revenge on Israel for a series of attacks targeting its nuclear
program.Fighter jets from Bahrain, Egypt, Israel and Saudi Arabia flew
alongside the bomber.Iranian state media did not immediately acknowledge
the flyover. Iran's mission to the United Nations in New York did not
immediately respond to a request for comment. The flyover comes after a
pattern of such flights by nuclear-capable B-52 bombers since the Trump
administration as a show of force to Iran. Trump in 2018 unilaterally
withdrew America from Iran's 2015 nuclear deal, which saw Tehran agree
to drastically limit its enrichment of uranium in exchange for the
lifting of economic sanctions. In the time since, Iran has abandoned all
the limits of the deal and drastically reduced the ability of
international inspectors to keep watch over their program. While Iran
insists its program is peaceful, the U.S. intelligence agencies, Western
inspectors and others say Tehran had a structured military nuclear
weapons program through the end of 2003.President Joe Biden has said
he's willing to re-enter the nuclear deal, but talks in Vienna have
stalled as a hard-line protégé of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei
took over as president.Biden sending a B1-B bomber into the region
allows him to send “a clear message of reassurance” to regional allies,
as the U.S. Air Force's Central Command put it on Twitter. But it
doesn't involved a nuclear-capable bomber.The B-1B came from the 37th
Bomb Squadron based at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South
Dakota.___Follow Jon Gambrell on Twitter at
