Ukraine war: First Lady Olena Zelenska writes open letter condemning Putin and 'mass murder of Ukrainian civilians'
Full text of the letter BY Olena Zelenska with Volodymyr Zelenskyy and their children. 1 YOUNG BOY AND AN OLDER DAUGHTER.
"Recently,
an overwhelming number of media outlets from around the world have
reached out with requests for interviews. This letter serves as my
answer to these requests and is my testimony from Ukraine."What happened
just over a week ago was impossible to believe. Our country was
peaceful; our cities, towns, and villages were full of life. On February
24th, we all woke up to the announcement of a Russian invasion. Tanks
crossed the Ukrainian border, planes entered our airspace, missile
launchers surrounded our cities."Despite assurances from Kremlin-backed
propaganda outlets, who call this a 'special operation' - it is, in
fact, the mass murder of Ukrainian civilians."Perhaps the most
terrifying and devastating of this invasion are the child casualties.
Eight-year-old Alice who died on the streets of Okhtyrka while her
grandfather tried to protect her."Or Polina from Kyiv, who died in the
shelling with her parents. 14-year-old Arseniy was hit in the head by
wreckage, and could not be saved because an ambulance could not get to
him on time because of intense fires."When Russia says that it is 'not
waging war against civilians,' I call out the names of these murdered
children first."Our women and children now live in bomb shelters and
basements. You have most likely all seen these images from Kyiv and
Kharkiv metro stations, where people lie on the floors with their
children and pets - trapped beneath."These are just consequences of war
for some, for Ukrainians it now a horrific reality. In some cities
families cannot get out of the bomb shelters for several days in a row
because of the indiscriminate and deliberate bombing and shelling of
civilian infrastructure."The first newborn of the war, saw the concrete
ceiling of the basement, their first breath was the acrid air of the
underground, and they were greeted by a community trapped and
terrorized. At this point, there are several dozen children who have
never known peace in their lives."This war is being waged against the
civilian population, and not just through shelling."Some people require
intensive care and continuous treatment, which they cannot receive now.
How easy is it to inject insulin in the basement? Or to get asthma
medication under heavy fire? Not to mention the thousands of cancer
patients whose essential access to chemotherapy and radiation treatment
have now been indefinitely delayed."Local communities on social media
are full of despair. Many people, including the elderly, severely ill
and those with disabilities, have been debilitatingly cut off, ending up
far from their families and without any support. War against these
innocent people is a double crime."Our roads are flooded with refugees.
Look into the eyes of these tired women and children who carry with them
the pain and heartache of leaving loved ones and life as they knew it
behind. The men bringing them to the borders shedding tears to break
apart their families, but bravely returning to fight for our
freedom."After all, despite all this horror, Ukrainians do not give
up."The aggressor, Putin, thought that he would unleash blitzkrieg on
Ukraine. But he underestimated our country, our people, and their
patriotism. Ukrainians, regardless of political views, native language,
beliefs, and nationalities, stand in unparalleled unity."While Kremlin
propagandists bragged that Ukrainians would welcome them with flowers as
saviours, they have been shunned with Molotov cocktails."I thank the
citizens of the attacked cities, who have coordinated to help those in
need. Those that keep working - in pharmacies, stores, public
transportation, and social services - showing that in Ukraine, life
wins."I acknowledge those that have provided humanitarian aid to our
citizens and thank you for your continued support."And to our neighbours
who have generously opened their borders to provide shelter for our
women and children, thank you for keeping them safe, when the aggressor
has rendered us unable to do so."
Why is Putin Calling the Ukrainian Government a Bunch of Nazis? March 4, 2022
“When
Ukrainian nationalists and Jews look at those red and black flags, we
see two different things.” – Prof. David Fishman-By Andrew Srulevitch,
ADL Director of European Affairs-As the Russian assault on Ukraine has
intensified, the Russian president and his government has escalated
rhetoric falsely labeling the Ukrainian government and its leaders as
“Nazis.” President Vladimir Putin has claimed that the military action
is aimed at the “denazification of Ukraine” and Russian Foreign Minister
Sergei Lavrov called the Ukrainian president “a Nazi and a neo
Nazi.”Earlier this week, I spoke to Dr. David Fishman, a professor of
Jewish History at The Jewish Theological Seminary, about how Russian
propaganda, including rhetoric linking Ukraine and the Nazis, is being
used as part of a campaign of disinformation in an attempt to discredit
the democratically elected Ukrainian government. Here’s an edited
transcript of our conversation.Q: Why does Putin think it makes any
sense to call Ukrainian leaders Nazis, especially when President
Zelensky is Jewish? Dr. Fishman: “This propaganda is an attempt to
delegitimize Ukraine in the eyes of the Russian public, which considers
its war against Nazi Germany its greatest moment, and in eyes of the
Western publics who may not know much about Ukraine except that it’s
next to Russia.”Q: But why call them Nazis, aside from that being the
worst accusation one can make?“This propaganda isn’t new. Russia has
for years highlighted the activity of a marginal group of Ukrainian
ultra-nationalists as a way of trying to stigmatize all of Ukraine. Yes,
some members of these ultra-nationalist groups have used Nazi insignia,
made Hitler salutes, and used antisemitic rhetoric, but they are
politically insignificant and in no way representative of Ukraine. The
political parties which the ultra-nationalists support received just
over 2 percent of the vote in the 2019 elections. Ukraine is a flawed
democracy, but unquestionably a democracy, and in no way a Nazi
regime.”Q: But we’ve seen torchlit marches in the middle of Kyiv with
the red and black flags of UPA (the WWII-era Ukrainian Insurgent Army)
and pictures of Stepan Bandera, who allied with the Nazis during WWII.
Isn’t that evidence of Nazism in Ukraine? “For Ukrainian nationalists,
UPA and Bandera are symbols of the Ukrainian fight for Ukrainian
independence. The UPA allied with Nazi Germany against the Soviet Union
for tactical – not ideological – reasons. For Jews, however, not only
is allying with the Nazis unforgivable under any circumstance, but
historians have documented that Ukrainian nationalists participated
together with Germans in the murder of many thousands of Jews in
Ukraine. “We should also not forget that 10 million Ukrainians fought in
the Red Army against Nazi Germany and 1.5 million Ukrainians died in
combat. The number of Ukrainians who fought the Nazis dwarfs the number
who collaborated with them. When Ukrainian nationalists and Jews look at
those red and black flags, we see two different things.”Q: So you
wouldn’t term as Nazis even those who march with the red and black flag?
“There are neo-Nazis in Ukraine, just as there are in the U.S., and in
Russia for that matter. But they are a very marginal group with no
political influence and who don’t attack Jews or Jewish institutions in
Ukraine. Putin’s propaganda is so far from the truth that it doesn’t
survive the first contact with even a little knowledge.”
Jews in
Ukraine have a long history of suffering and are under attack again-The
future for Ukrainian Jews may be in doubt once and for all, but now they
have a safe haven should they need it: the Jewish State of Israel.By
Mike FegelmanContributor-Mon., March 7, 2022
Two days into the
current hostilities between Russia and Ukraine, a video filmed inside a
Kyiv synagogue went viral on social media. The short clip, filmed by the
gabbai, or sexton, of Kiev’s main synagogue, featured him making an
emotional plea for people to pray for his community’s safety as they
were evacuating the Ukrainian capital, joining countless others who were
fleeing the violence. The video, though an isolated example, represents
one angle of the Russia-Ukraine war, often overlooked thus far by the
media: the region’s substantial and ancient Jewish community who are
stuck in the middle of both warring parties.Ukraine is home to as many
as 270,000 Jews, making it the fifth largest Jewish community in the
world, after Canada. Though largely concentrated in the capital of Kyiv,
other population centres include the cities of Dnipro, Odessa and
Kharkiv. Jews represent the largest non-Christian faith in the
country. The Jewish community in Ukraine stretches back over 1,000 years,
and in that time it has endured significant suffering.Tens of thousands
of Jews were killed during the Khmelnytsky Uprising and associated
pogroms in the 17th century, when antisemitic violence was widespread.
Starting in the 19th century and until 1905, pogroms in Odessa, Kyiv and
elsewhere saw more violence, as local mobs stabbed, shot and
decapitated Jews in bloody antisemitic violence.Tragically, the
Holocaust was the low point for Ukraine’s Jewish population, when as
many as 1.6 million were killed, both at the hands of the Nazi war
machine and by local collaborators. The best-known massacre during the
Holocaust took place in September, 1941, when over the course of two
days, Nazis and their local collaborators murdered more than 33,000 Jews
in the town of Babi Yar in Kyiv. Russia is reported to have recently
bombed the Holocaust memorial at Babi Yar, which commemorates the murder
of Jews by the Nazis in the Second World War, making it another
casualty of this war.Russian President Vladimir Putin has absurdly cited
“de-Nazification” as one of his goals in Ukraine. Today, while
Ukraine’s Jewish population is only a fraction of its pre-Holocaust
size, it has not disappeared entirely, and in fact, the current
president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, is both Jewish and a
descendant of Holocaust survivors.Across the border in Russia, there are
as many as 800,000 Jews, who have a long history serving the country’s
armed forces. Since Israel’s independence in 1948, nearly 1.8 million
Jews have immigrated to the Jewish state from both Russia and Ukraine,
making the country one of the largest Russian-speaking countries in the
world.Unsurprisingly, given the long-standing Jewish presence in both
Ukraine and Russia, Israel has found itself in an unfavourable position
of being wedged between NATO-backed Ukraine and Russia.Israel also faces
a Russian military presence in Syria, which has successfully propped up
the Assad regime in the face of onslaughts by the Islamic State in
recent years. Despite this presence, Russia has effectively permitted
Israel’s continued operations in Syria (which have largely targeted
Iranian encroachment in the country), by not shooting down Israeli jets
when they attack Iranian and Syrian military targets. This tacit
understanding has undoubtedly saved Israeli military lives, and by
extension, helped keep Israelis safe from Syria’s Assad regime. This
unique Israeli position was recognized two days into the current
hostilities when Ukraine’s president publicly called on Israel to host
negotiations in Jerusalem between Ukraine and Russia. With the eruption
of hostilities in recent days, a growing number of Ukrainian Jews have
inquired about moving to Israel. After 1,000 years of presence, and
having endured horrific persecution, the future for Ukrainian Jews may
be in doubt once and for all, but unlike in the past they have a safe
haven and refuge should they need it: the Jewish State of Israel.Mike
