LONDON (AP) — For years, global health officials have used billions of drops of an oral vaccine in a remarkably effective campaign aimed at wiping out polio in its last remaining strongholds — typically, poor, politically unstable corners of the world.Now, in a surprising twist in the decades-long effort to eradicate the virus, authorities in Jerusalem, New York, and London have discovered evidence that polio is spreading there.The original source of the virus? The oral vaccine itself.Scientists have long known about this extremely rare phenomenon. That is why some countries have switched to other polio vaccines. But these incidental infections from the oral formula are becoming more glaring as the world inches closer to the eradication of the disease, and the number of polio cases caused by the wild or naturally circulating virus plummets.Since 2017, there have been 396 cases of polio caused by the wild virus, versus more than 2,600 linked to the oral vaccine, according to figures from the World Health Organization and its partners.“We are basically replacing the wild virus with the virus in the vaccine, which is now leading to new outbreaks,” said Scott Barrett, a Columbia University professor who has studied polio eradication. “I would assume that countries like the UK and the US will be able to stop transmission quite quickly, but we also thought that about monkeypox.”The latest incidents represent the first time in several years that vaccine-connected polio virus has turned up in rich countries.Earlier this year, officials in Israel detected polio in an unvaccinated 3-year-old, who suffered paralysis. Several other children, nearly all of them unvaccinated, were found to have the virus, but no symptoms.In June, British authorities reported finding evidence in sewage that the virus was spreading, though no infections in people were identified. Last week, the government said all children in London ages 1 to 9 would be offered a booster shot.In the US, an unvaccinated young adult suffered paralysis in his legs after being infected with polio, New York officials revealed last month. The virus has also shown up in New York sewers, suggesting it is spreading. But officials said they are not planning a booster campaign because they believe the state’s high vaccination rate should offer enough protection.Genetic analyses showed that the viruses in the three countries were all “vaccine-derived,” meaning that they were mutated versions of a virus that originated in the oral vaccine.The oral vaccine at issue has been used since 1988 because it is cheap, easy to administer — two drops are put directly into children’s mouths — and better at protecting entire populations where polio is spreading. It contains a weakened form of the live virus.But it can also cause polio in about two to four children per 2 million doses. (Four doses are required to be fully immunized.) In extremely rare cases, the weakened virus can also sometimes mutate into a more dangerous form and spark outbreaks, especially in places with poor sanitation and low vaccination levels.These outbreaks typically begin when people who are vaccinated shed live virus from the vaccine in their feces. From there, the virus can spread within the community and, over time, turn into a form that can paralyze people and start new epidemics.Many countries that eliminated polio switched to injectable vaccines containing a killed virus decades ago to avoid such risks; the Nordic countries and the Netherlands never used the oral vaccine. The ultimate goal is to move the entire world to the shots once wild polio is eradicated, but some scientists argue that the switch should happen sooner.“We probably could never have gotten on top of polio in the developing world without the (oral polio vaccine), but this is the price we’re now paying,” said Dr. Paul Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. “The only way we are going to eliminate polio is to eliminate the use of the oral vaccine.”Aidan O’Leary, director of WHO’s polio department, described the discovery of polio spreading in London and New York as “a major surprise,” saying that officials have been focused on eradicating the disease in Afghanistan and Pakistan, where health workers have been killed for immunizing children and where conflict has made access to some areas impossible.Still, O’Leary said he is confident Israel, Britain, and the US will shut down their newly identified outbreaks quickly.The oral vaccine is credited with dramatically reducing the number of children paralyzed by polio. Israel is set to sell its Iron Dome air defense system to regional ally Cyprus, a Greek newspaper has reported.According to a report Friday in Kathimerini, the Cypriot Defense Ministry has begun to “implement the government’s decision to purchase” the Iron Dome, and agreements pertaining to the deal have already been signed with Israel.The paper did not say how many batteries would be purchased, and there was no indication of when they were to arrive.Israel’s Defense Ministry did not respond to requests for comment on the matter.In March, the chief of the Cypriot military, Demokritos Zervakis, was in Israel on a first visit, which included a tour of an Iron Dome battery.Last week, Defense Minister Benny Gantz hosted his Cypriot counterpart at the Israel Defense Forces headquarters in Tel Aviv. Thanking Charalambos Petrides for his country’s military cooperation with Israel, Gantz said, “In such challenging times, partnerships are crucial.”Gantz said he was “pleased that our establishments have been working closely, and that our industrial cooperation has become a pillar not only of our bilateral relations, but also to regional security and stability.”He added, “We also value the trilateral framework with Greece. It was the second drone incident at the headquarters in three weeks and followed explosions at a Russian airfield and ammunition depot on the peninsula this month.An aide to Crimea’s governor, Oleg Kryuchkov, also said Saturday that “attacks by small drones” triggered air-defense systems in western Crimea. He did not elaborate. Lviv, Ukraine (AFP) Aug 18, 2022 - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday called on the United Nations to ensure security at the Zaporizhzhia power plant, where increased fighting has raised fears of a nuclear incident."The UN must ensure the security of this strategic object, its demilitarisation and complete liberation from Russian troops," Zelensky said in a statement after meeting UN chief Antonio Guterres in Lviv.The Ukrainian leader also criticised "deliberate" Russian attacks on the facility.Ukraine and Russia have been accusing each other of targeting the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant -- the biggest in Europe -- which Russia seized last March.Tensions around the power plant have fuelled global fears of a nuclear disaster.The two leaders also discussed grain exports, after a deal brokered by the UN and Turkey allowed their resumption this month.Exports had been blocked following Russia's invasion of Ukraine."We agreed to continue the coordination of the grain initiative implementation. We also discussed the possible directions of its development," Zelensky said.The first ship to depart under the deal left Ukraine on August 1. Once a thriving city in Cameroon, Bamenda has been ripped of its soul by the five-year war between English-speaking secessionists and the mainly French-speaking government.Bamenda is all but dead. Only the coffin trade is booming. Bodies are dumped regularly all over the city - in mortuaries, on streets and in rivers.Council workers pick them up and give them a pauper's burial."It is a blessing to be buried at all, let alone by family and friends," says a cemetery worker as he comes to pick up 10 cheap coffins from a funeral parlour.Demand has dropped for the once-popular elaborately designed coffins - shaped like bibles, cars or beer bottles to reflect the lifestyle, interests or last wishes of the dead."Coffins that used to sell for a million CFA francs [about $1,500, £1,270] are out of commission because nobody can afford them. Most people can only afford coffins for 50,000 CFA francs," says an attendee at a funeral parlour.The regular funerals for young men and boys are a brutal reminder of the conflict in Cameroon's English-speaking regions of North-West and South-West.In just five years, that conflict has claimed tens of thousands of lives, while forcing more than one million to flee to French-speaking areas and a further 80,000 to take refuge in next-door Nigeria.The war has its roots in grievances that date back to the end of colonialism, when British-controlled territory was unified with French areas to create what is now Cameroon.Many English-speaking Cameroonians have felt marginalised ever since and have opposed what they see as attempts by the government - dominated by the French-speaking majority - to force them to give up their way of life, including their language, history and education and legal systems.Tensions boiled over in 2016 when tens of thousands of people in Bamenda and other English-speaking areas embarked on a series of protests against the use of French in their schools and courts, as well as the failure to publish government documents in English, even though it is an official language.With the government ordering the security forces to crackdown on the protests rather than entering into talks to resolve their grievances, young men took up arms the following year to demand the independent state of Ambazonia, as they call the two English-speaking regions.Now, military vehicles - including those with mounted machine-guns - constantly criss-cross Bamenda.Residents say soldiers raid homes, make arrests, burn markets and even display the bodies of their victims, including commanders of militias, at major intersections to warn residents against joining the separatist fighters.Government forces have also suffered heavy losses in the conflict, with the bodies of fallen soldiers removed from the military's mortuary in the capital, Yaoundé, every Thursday and Friday.Widows wail in front of the long lines of coffins draped in the Cameroonian flag, before the soldiers are buried amid the pomp and ceremony that mark military funerals.-Women in Bamend-Separatist fighters have also gained notoriety for atrocities against civilians, including beheadings and the torturing of women whom they denounce for "betraying the struggle", calling them "black legs" - a term regularly bandied about now.They circulate videos of these atrocities to warn people of the punishment they face if they are suspected of colluding with the security forces.On Mondays, Bamenda becomes a "ghost town" with the roads empty and markets closed - part of a civil economic disobedience campaign dating back to before the armed struggle. These days, residents who dare ignore the lockdown order are either shot dead or see their shops go up in smoke.The military and police also disappear from the streets, so that they do not become soft targets for separatists fighters who have a strong presence in the city.The separatists even ordered the closure of all schools four years ago as part of their campaign. A few have bravely remain open, but children do not dare wear uniforms.The military enforces a curfew virtually every night in the city, resulting in many of its restaurants, bars and clubs - once reputed to be the best in Cameroon - going out of business, not helped by the now-erratic electricity supply."The constant frying of popcorn has driven everybody away," says a waitress using a metaphor to describe the never-ending sound of gunfire.She says it has also prevented those who live abroad from coming home. Known as "bushfallers" - a Pidgin term for hunters (in this case seeking greener pastures) - those in the diaspora were responsible for Bamenda's economic heartbeat, sending back money to invest in the once-mushrooming building trade and coming back at Christmas to share their largesse.But the authorities accused them of bankrolling the Anglophone rebellion. Visiting returnees soon found themselves arrested - some are now in the maximum security prisons of Yaoundé or Douala - while others simply disappeared. Bushfallers' money has dried up and none of them now visit.Long-time resident Peter Shang, who once loved life in the city, says people now take one day at a time: "Life is a lottery. Too many things remind you about untimely death. You talk to someone today and tomorrow they are gone."For Marie Clair Bisu, there is a silver lining - she sees more of her husband, because he gets home before curfew."He has now discovered his children. This is a man who used to come back late sometimes drunk and would just head to bed. Now he can play with the kids and check their books. This conflict has reunited us," she says."The only problem is that the gunshots always spoil our nights."Cameroon's two English-speaking provinces are North-West and South-West-And after a night of shooting, residents have to make several calls and listen out for traffic to check the situation is safe before venturing out. Even so, gunfire has become so common in Bamenda during the day that people no longer immediately flee at the sound."What would we eat if we keep running? I have children to feed," a vegetable seller says."We simply dive for cover and get back to business when the gunshots stop."Another woman says her child has got so used to the sound of gunfire that she knows who is shooting."My daughter is seven and she can tell whether the sounds are from machine guns of the army or the AK-47 rifles of 'The Boys'," she says, referring to the separatist fighters.Some nuns who I meet by a road in the city centre say they are waiting for a taxi to go to the Abangoh Orphanage.The war has seen an explosion in unwanted teenage pregnancies, they say - with girls who have been forced to flee their homes becoming victims of sexual violence and exploitation by both sides. One angrily says: "Rape as a weapon of war is despicable."At every corner, there is evidence that the very fabric of this once-glitzy city, where piles of billowing rubbish now tumble, has been permeated by the stench and misery of what many here regard as an unnecessary war. How scientist facilitated the development of LEO mega constellations-by Staff Writers-Beijing, China (SPX) Aug 18, 2022

The rapid development of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) mega constellations has significantly contributed to several aspects of human scientific progress, such as communication, navigation, and remote sensing. However, unrestrained deployment of constellations has also strained orbital resources and increased spacecraft congestion in LEO, which seriously affects the safety of in-orbit operations of many space assets.For the long-term and sustainable development of space activities in LEO regions, space environment stability must be maintained using more rational surveillance and governance mechanisms. In a review paper recently published in Space: Science and Technology, Jingrui Zhang from School of Aerospace Engineering, Beijing Institute of Technology, analyzed the research gap and facilitated the development of LEO mega constellations.First of all, the author reviewed the current developments of typical LEO mega constellations, including Starlink, OneWeb, Iridium Next, Globalstar, and Flock. Taking SpaceX's Starlink as an example, it aims to build a LEO constellation containing 42,000 satellites to achieve global coverage, high-speed, large-capacity, and low-latency space-based global communication system. Starlink has shown excellent performance in related fields, such as international aviation and ocean transportatio. Moreover, Starlink can be constructed as a powerful command and communication network and has already been an important symbol of the weaponization of outer space in the United States.Then, the author analyzed the impact of LEO mega constellations in terms of astronomical observation, spacecraft safety in orbit, and space environment evolution. From the perspective of space science, such impacts were particularly prominent in astronomical observations, in-orbit spacecraft safety, and the evolution of the space environment. In terms of astronomical observation, the new LEO mega constellations which would mainly be deployed at 350-1100 km, would significantly affect the normal operation of ground-based astronomical observation equipment.For ground-based optical telescopes, when a satellite passed through its field of view, it caused different degrees of damage to the observational data depending on the satellite brightness. Besides, the excessive number of satellites and poor management capabilities of LEO mega constellations posed a serious threat to the safety of spacecraft in orbit. Especially for large, manned spacecraft of high value, this not only increased the risk of significant economic losses but also threatened astronaut safety.In addition to posing a threat to the safety of individual spacecraft in orbit, LEO mega constellations increased the uncertainty of space environment evolution. The number of uncontrollable targets had significantly increased with LEO mega constellations, which led to a sharp increase in the density of LEO space objects, posing significant challenges to space debris mitigation and space traffic management. Currently, the best space observation system in terms of global performance is the SSN, from the United States, followed by the Russian Space Surveillance System (SSS) and the European Union Space Surveillance and Tracking System (EUSST). Owing to the development of LEO mega constellation, SSA was facing new challenges in terms of multi-sensor management and data fusion.To maximize the capabilities of SSA, an efficient allocation of multi-sensors was required, with an effective fusion of multi-sensor data. The multi-sensor management method can be understood in terms of sensor scheduling or the dispatch of observation tasks, which referred to the allocation of appropriate observation instructions at appropriate times, so that the entire sensor network can work together to achieve task requirements. With the increasing number of ground-based and space-based observation sensors coming online, effective multi-sensor management methods became an urgent demand by the space community.In additional to typical optimization methods, efficient and optimal task allocation methods based on deep reinforcement learning algorithms and related methods were proposed to achieve good performance in high-dimensional and large-scale scenarios. Multisource information fusion was a multilevel and multifaceted process of information processing that detects, correlates, and combines data from multiple sensors and information sources to obtain an accurate estimate of the target status and identity, as well as a complete assessment of environmental posture and threats. However, multi-sensor information fusion experienced limitations, such as low autonomy and poor timeliness.Toward governance of space objects, there were two main governance methods. The first category, post-mission disposal (PMD), was to reduce the generation of new space objects by onboard deorbiting strategies. The second category, active debris removal (ADR), mainly aimed to speed up the deorbit of out-of-service space objects, and the ultimate goal was to crashing targets into the atmosphere through active human activity.PMD can significantly reduce birth rates and increased the rate of space failure targets. However, this cannot curb the growth trend. ADR can dispose of existing failure targets and fundamentally curbed the tendency for space junk growth. However, there was an urgent need to improve removal efficiency. Therefore, the integrated use of both PMD and the active removal of space objects was a prerequisite for ensuring the sustainability of the space environment.Finally, the future development and potential research directions of LEO mega constellations were prospected. Comprehensive applications of LEO mega constellations are still in the stage of preliminary exploration due to some unique characteristics, such as limited frequency-orbit resources, global impact, and complex constraints. Thus, there are four main trends for the future development. + The bellwether firms would rapidly reserve frequency-orbit resources in batches. + Unprecedented damage from LEO mega constellations might be caused to the space environment. + The surveillance systems may evolve from ground-based to space-based. + The governance methods may evolve from single-objective targets to multi-objective, low-cost, and high-efficiency targets.According to the summarized tendency above, four potential research directions are of great interests. + A more equitable coordination framework for LEO frequency-orbit resource allocation should be established. + A reasonable and unified technical standard for space traffic management should be proposed to further improve the ex-ante negotiation mechanisms, crisis control mechanisms during accidents, and ex-post accident disposal mechanisms. + Critical technologies for timely surveillance, developments in the autonomy rapidity and effectiveness of multi-sensor information fusion are urgently required. + Key methods for efficient governance are worth being further developed. About 8 p.m. on a hot Thursday in July, Nicholas Gubell, a driver for UPS, was nearing the end of his route on Long Island, New York, when he started to feel woozy.That day, Gubell, 26, had delivered about 200 packages. Temperatures had soared into the high 80s, and it was even hotter inside the metal shell of the back of the truck, where, with each stop, he would spend up to a minute or so to retrieve his cargo, sweat beading on his skin.Now, pulled over on the side of the road, he was panting and barely able to speak, gripping his phone with his hand, which had cramped from dehydration.“My body was losing it,” Gubell said. Paramedics covered him in ice packs to bring down his body temperature and took him to a hospital. “I was just trying to hold on as best I could.”As blistering heat waves swept across the United States this summer, breaking temperature records and placing millions under heat advisories and warnings, workers such as Gubell have continued to deliver America’s packages for a variety of carriers, often in trucks that have no cooling mechanisms for drivers. Some UPS workers have shared photographs that show thermometer readings of up to 150 degrees in the backs of their trucks.Now a string of heat-related illnesses among the drivers has renewed calls to improve their working conditions.“They’re vomiting. Their bodies are shutting down,” said Dave Reeves, president of Local 767, a Texas local of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, which represents 350,000 UPS workers across the country. “It’s awful.”Government records show that the problem is not isolated: Since 2015, at least 270 UPS and U.S. Postal Service drivers have been sickened and in many cases hospitalized from heat exposure. Last month, another of the company’s workers was captured in footage from a Ring doorbell, stumbling and collapsing outside a home in Scottsdale, Arizona.Although Postal Service and other delivery drivers have also been sickened, attention has mostly been focused on UPS, which is the world’s largest package delivery company and among the biggest employers in the nation. COVID-19 lockdowns in China threw a wrench into global supply chains earlier this year, causing shipping and production delays worldwide, and hindering economic growth.Now, the country is facing another major threat—and this one could be even worse for the economy.China has been coping with its worst heat wave in 60 years this month, with temperatures in several provinces routinely reaching 40°C (104°F). But one key province is experiencing the worst financial repercussions from the suffocating heat.In Sichuan, a regional manufacturing powerhouse that is home to more than 80 million people, the record heat wave has exacerbated an ongoing drought, cutting water levels at hydropower reservoirs in half this month, according to the Sichuan Provincial Department of Economics and Information Technology.Sichuan relies on hydropower for roughly 80% of its energy needs, and with consumers using more energy than usual to stay cool during the heat wave, energy supplies are running short.As a result, officials announced on Aug. 15 that factories in 19 cities and prefectures would be forced to close their doors for five days to reserve electricity for “use by the people.”But an expert told Fortune that the ongoing heat wave is more than just a regional problem, and could have dramatic repercussions worldwide. Because of the specific challenges that heat poses, manufacturing work-arounds that became common during the height of COVID will no longer be possible, potentially leading to even more severe economic outcomes.“These shutdowns have the potential to be equally if not more impactful on supply chains than recent COVID lockdowns,” said Mirko Woitzik, global director of intelligence solutions for Everstream Analytics, a supply-chain insights and risk analytics company.-From Sichuan to the rest of China-Some factories in China were able to remain open during pandemic lockdowns through the use of “closed loop” systems, where workers would isolate themselves at factories in order to continue operations.But these types of mitigation efforts aren’t possible in a heat wave.“Everyone's depending on the same hydropower, so the entire region is really affected by it. And there’s no white list at the moment of exemptions. So it’s really the indiscriminate nature compared to the targeted COVID lockdowns that make this much more harmful,” Woitzik said.For now, factory shutdowns caused by the heat wave in China are confined to Sichuan. But because of the region’s status as a manufacturing powerhouse, the effects will likely be widespread.Electronic component manufacturers like Foxconn and Compal, which are both suppliers for Apple, and auto manufacturers like Tesla, Toyota, and SAIC Motor Corp. may be affected the most by the deadly heat.Tesla and SAIC said on Thursday that they are having difficulty maintaining production amid the power crunch, and asked Chinese officials if their production could be prioritized. Toyota has also suspended production at its plant in Sichuan this week, according to Japanese media outlet Kyodo News.Additionally, BOE Technology Group, an Apple supplier that makes LED screens and other hardware components, said on Wednesday that it will need to “make adjustments” at its operations in Sichuan owing to power rationing in the region. And Contemporary Amperex Technology, the world’s largest battery maker, said it will stop production at its Sichuan plant until Aug. 20, as a result of the power cuts, Reuters reported.“The Sichuan region has become very important in the last 10 years in terms of raw material production,” Woitzik said. “Foxconn has their battery production there, and the list goes on, so it’s still very, very impactful in a supply-chain sense.”Lithium and semiconductors could also be affected, though it likely won’t be to the same extent as electronic component manufacturers.Sichuan is a key supplier of lithium, and some experts are concerned that China’s heat wave could cause prices of the silvery-white metal to soar.Supplies of lithium have already been strained amid rising demand for EVs and production issues. And Woitzik notes that one of China’s top lithium producers, Sichuan Yahua Industrial Group, has shut down operations for five days and that prices for lithium are expected to rise in the near term as a result.Still, Woitzik said that he isn’t too worried about the supply of lithium—at least for now.“We believe that the impact will be more felt in terms of the intermediate and end products,” he said. “For lithium, the heat wave would have to last for much longer for it to create a significant impact.”Another key industry that could be affected by the heat wave is semiconductors (also known as chips), which are used in everything from smartphones to fighter jets. Over the past two years, there’s been a global shortage of semiconductors, and the situation in China is set to make things even worse.Woitzik said that Sichuan semiconductor manufacturers are already being affected by shutdowns, adding that they are “likely going to cause more ripple effects through semiconductor supply chains.”But he also noted that Sichuan isn’t home to many semiconductor producers, so the impact on the ongoing chip shortage will likely be limited compared with past pandemic-related disruptions.“In terms of semiconductor issues, they’ll probably be more confined, but then there’s a lot of other electric component producers, especially Taiwanese ones, that have settled down there [in Sichuan],” he said. “So, it’s really more the electronic components other than semiconductors that are key in Sichuan.”-The repercussions of longer factory shutdowns-Right now, factories in Sichuan are expected to be shuttered for only a little while.But if the heat persists they could stay closed for much longer, making the situation for Chinese manufacturers even more dire.“If it’s confined to the five to seven days, it would still be manageable,” said Woitzik.But Chinese officials have already extended some factory shutdowns in Chongqing, a self-administered municipality located within Sichuan province, to Aug. 24, Woitzik noted.“Factories can sort out inventory, and shutdowns won’t have that much of an impact,” he said of the heat wave. “But if it is going to 10 days, two weeks, or anything more than that, then we’re really talking about serious supply disruptions.”This story was originally featured on Fortune.com

WASHINGTON (AP) — The first surprise, for the Finnish conscripts and officers taking part in a NATO-hosted military exercise in the Arctic this spring: the sudden roar of a U.S. Marine helicopter assault force, touching down in a field right next to the Finns' well-hidden command post.The second surprise: Spilling out of their field headquarters, the Finnish Signal Corps communications workers and others inside routed the U.S. Marines — the Finns' designated adversary in the NATO exercise and members of America's professional and premier expeditionary force — in the mock firefight that followed.Finnish camouflage for the Arctic snow, scrub and scree likely had kept the Americans from even realizing the command post was there when they landed, Finnish commander Lt. Col. Mikko Kuoka suspected. “For those who years from now will doubt it,” Kuoka, modestly stunned by the outcome of the random skirmish, wrote in an infantry-focused blog recording the outcome, of an episode he later confirmed for The Associated Press. “That actually happened.”As the exercise made clear, NATO's addition of Finland and Sweden — what President Joe Biden calls “our allies of the high north” — would bring military and territorial advantages to the Western defense alliance. TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan is considering the deployment of 1,000 long-range cruise missiles to boost its counterattack capability against China, the Yomiuri newspaper reported on Sunday.The missiles would be existing arms modified to extend their range from 100 km (62 miles) to 1,000 km, the daily said, citing government sources.The arms, launched by ships or aircraft, would be stationed mainly around the southern Nansei islands and capable of reaching the coastal areas of North Korea and China, the Yomiuri said.Representatives from Japan's foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the report.Japan, which interprets its war-renouncing postwar constitution to mean it may use its military only for self-defense, has stepped up its military spending and taken a more assertive strategy in recent years. But it has refrained from deploying long-range missiles, among its limits on weapons that can strike targets on foreign soil.Regional tensions ratcheted up this month after a visit by Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, to Taiwan, which is self-ruled but claimed by China. The Farmers' Almanac came out with its winter weather predictions across the U.S., and it's going to be — you guessed it — frigid.Specifically, the almanac, an annual American periodical in publication since 1818, is calling the North Central region a "hibernation zone, glacial, snow-filled." Yikes. "The big takeaway for our winter season forecast," the periodical wrote, "is that frigid temperatures should flow into many areas nationwide — especially in the North Central region, where readers will certainly be shaking and shivering!"The North Central region encompasses Iowa, Colorado, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming.There will be a fair share of storms in the region, which means plenty of snow for winter enthusiasts — "maybe even in time for a white Christmas," the almanac editors wrote.Now, keep in mind that the almanac is usually about 80% correct.Instead of comparing the upcoming winter with the previous one, the periodical measures against long-term normals for temperature, precipitation and snowfall using mathematical and astronomical formulations to make its predictions. The formula takes into account sunspot activity, tidal activity, planets' positions and "a variety of other factors," according to its website.Last year, the almanac editors predicted a mild, then cold and snowy, then mild winter in Iowa. Des Moines saw above-normal precipitation and snowfall in January and March, according to the National Weather Service in Des Moines.The first day of winter and the shortest day of the year will be Dec. 21, but the almanac predicts the "first bite of winter" is expected to come earlier than last year's. December looks stormy and cold across the U.S. and multiple "significant weather disturbances" are on the horizon, including: Potential for heavy snow, followed by a sweep of bitterly cold air, the first week of January in the Rockies and across the Plains. The weather could reach as far south as Texas and Oklahoma. Bouts of heavy rain and snow over the eastern two-thirds of the U.S. from Jan. 16-23, the Almanac predicts. It'll be followed by "one of the coldest outbreaks of arctic air" recorded in several years. We're talking 40 degrees below zero.Here are a few highlights from other regions, according to the Farmers' Almanac: Much of the Southeast will see a mix of wet snow, sleet, ice, freezing rain and chilly temperatures. South Central states could see some snow accumulation, especially in early January.
