Israeli archaeologists have discovered the earliest evidence of cotton in the ancient Near East during excavations at Tel Tsaf, a 7,000-year-old town in the Jordan Valley.The newly uncovered microscopic remains of cotton fibers join an array of other preserved prehistoric organic materials found at the site: Over the past several years of excavation, Tel Tsaf, located near Kibbutz Tirat Tzvi, has provided a wealth of discoveries, including the earliest example of social beer drinking and ritual food storage.“Tsaf is a site with amazing preservation of organic materials,” Prof. Danny Rosenberg of the Zinman Institute of Archaeology at the University of Haifa told The Times of Israel on Sunday.Textiles made from organic materials break down with time, so few examples are available for archaeologists to study. However, even after a textile has disintegrated with time, the remains of the fibers may still be present in the surrounding sediment. New technologies are offering archaeologists unprecedented ways to study the microscopic amounts of organic remains, including understanding the remains in such detail as to determine whether or not the fibers were woven.Rosenberg worked with researchers from the United States and Germany to collect sediments scraped from vessels, tools, and other points inside the ancient city and examined those sediments under high-powered microscopes to identify the remains of fibers.Previously, historians had believed fabrics in this region in the prehistoric time periods were mostly made from other plant matter such as flax and linen, and, thousands of years later, products from animals including hair or wool. Since cotton was not native to this area, it was a surprise for researchers and points to Tel Tsaf’s importance as a global trade hub.“Textiles are so imperative to our life,” Rosenberg told the Times of Israel. “In prehistoric time, [textiles] were involved in other things, not just clothing, but also hunting and fishing… It’s something larger than just, ‘Hey, these are the clothes they used to wear.’ It involves more of the economic practices of prehistoric people.”The discovery of cotton fiber remains at Tel Tsaf is the oldest evidence of the use of cotton in the Near East. The cotton is likely to have come from the Indus region, now modern-day Pakistan, which was the only area of the world that had started to domesticate cotton during this period. Rosenberg said they can’t state for sure that the cotton came from the Indus region, but it’s their best hypothesis given that the only other place to develop cotton in the ancient world was in Africa — and not until thousands of years later.The Pakistani cotton joins a large number of discoveries in Tel Tsaf stretching across the ancient world, highlighting the town’s importance as a global trading hub. Rosenberg and other researchers have discovered beads from modern-day Anatolia, Romania, Egypt, and other parts of Africa, pottery from Iraq, Syria, and Armenia, and the earliest copper and metal in the world.“Tel Tsaf was sort of a hub that concentrated a lot of trade and contact with lots of people,” said Rosenberg. “They had large-scale [grain] storage capacity at the site, which was huge compared to other sites.”Tel Tsaf is one of the only known communities in the region from the Chalcolithic era, a period of transition from agricultural societies living in tiny communities to those building larger cities.Settlement at Tel Tsaf, near the Jordan River and the modern state of Jordan, dates to circa 5200-4700 BCE. The site offers researchers the opportunity to study this period of change as cities begin to emerge. The discovery of large-scale food storage suggests that the ancient people had reached an early formative stage in the development of human society, including the possible development of social hierarchies and wealth accumulation.Excavations at Tel Tsaf have also unearthed well-preserved mudbrick architecture, the earliest metal item in the region, and evidence of long-distance trade. Rosenberg said the Great African Rift Valley, which stretches from Syria to Africa, was a “highway” for ancient trade routes, which is one reason Tel Tsaf was so prosperous.Obsidian beads from Anatolia, modern-day Turkey, discovered in Tel Tsaf are one of the examples of artifacts from around the world that highlight the ancient town’s importance as a global trading hub. The first detailed excavation took place in 1978-1980, when findings from deep probe trenches suggested that there were two occupation periods at the site: the Pottery Neolithic period and the Early Chalcolithic period. Another set of excavations was undertaken in earnest between 2004 and 2007, and uncovered evidence of Middle and Early Late Chalcolithic settlement.-Digging smaller, not deeper“We had hints we need to look for fibers, but fibers and textiles are not a commonly studied topic in our area,” said Rosenberg. The site is rich with opportunities to make important discoveries on a microscopic level, he said, but this requires researchers to sift through samples of dirt as small as 100 milligrams (smaller than a drop of water).First, archaeologists identify a spot in the dig that is likely to have organic remains, such as the inside of a food vessel. Then, researchers carefully scrape off debris from inside the vessel, wrap it in tinfoil, and seal it in a plastic bag to be opened only in the sterile lab environment.The soil sediments were examined at Stanford University by a team led by Professor Li Liu, and supported by researchers from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and the State Museum of Hanover, Germany, using a process called micro-remain analysis. The sediments are sometimes chemically manipulated to dissolve the unwanted dirt and allow other organic remains to be placed in slides and studied under a microscope.Contamination is a major fear when working on such a small scale, but Rosenberg said none of their samples included synthetic fibers, which make up the majority of modern clothes and would have indicated contamination.In the future, they will attempt to extract DNA from the cotton fiber remains, to confirm whether the cotton is really from Pakistan. Critics blast move as a way to make people less mobile than before-Electric car charing is costing drivers twice as much as a gasoline fill-up in Norway due to the local government.Drivers are now paying double – and in some cases triple – the cost at city-owned charing stations in Oslo, Norway’s capital, since the city government keeps increasing the price, which has actually led to the Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association telling drivers to not buy electric vehicles.“So dramatic was the rate hike, from NOK 28 to NOK 49 (USD 2.80-4.90) an hour for ‘normal’ recharging during the day and NOK 13 to NOK 39 at night, that the national el-car association Norsk elbilforening claimed it could no longer recommend that Oslo residents buy an electric car,” reported local news.The Norwegian government was offering drivers tax incentives to get them to buy an electric car, but now that the incentives are expiring, drivers are now getting fleeced.Even the Oslo government said it wasn’t getting state support for the electric rates, which are now apparently being passed on to drivers.“It was unclear when or even if that will happen as winter takes hold and electricity rates are widely expected to rise further,” the media further reported.Critics have blasted the push to electric cars as a way to make the public less mobile than before, especially as the world lacks the proper energy infrastructure to charge millions of electric cars cheaply and quickly.

The former US Secretary of State warns against hawks seeking the "dissolution" of Russia-Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger has again called for urgently finding a path of negotiated settlement to the war in Ukraine, warning that the entire world is in danger as nuclear-armed superpowers inch closer toward disastrous direct confrontation.The celebrated diplomat penned an essay entitled “How to Avoid Another World War” for the new issue of The Spectator wherein he spelled out that the ambition of hawks in the West to break apart Russia is likely to unleash nuclear chaos. “The time is approaching to build on the strategic changes which have already been accomplished and to integrate them into a new structure towards achieving peace through negotiation,” Kissinger wrote.“A peace process should link Ukraine to NATO, however expressed. The alternative of neutrality is no longer meaningful,” he emphasized. He warned that continued attempts to render Russia “impotent” could result in an uncontrollable and unpredictable spiral. He laid out that along with the sought after “dissolution” of Russia would come a massive power vacuum out of which new threats to the whole world would emerge as bigger powers rush in.“The dissolution of Russia or destroying its ability for strategic policy could turn its territory encompassing 11 time zones into a contested vacuum,” Kissinger continued.“Its competing societies might decide to settle their disputes by violence. Other countries might seek to expand their claims by force. All these dangers would be compounded by the presence of thousands of nuclear weapons which make Russia one of the world’s two largest nuclear powers.”The 99-year old statesman who has long been seen as the quintessential national security state and military-industrial complex insider had last May angered other hawkish pundits and “insiders”, ironically enough, for daring to propose that Ukraine be willing to recognize Crimea as under Russia, and in return Russian forces would fall back to their lines before the Feb. 24 invasion. Previously he’s been on record as saying “It was not a wise American policy to attempt to include Ukraine into NATO.”Kissinger’s newest proposal is already receiving similarly fierce pushback – this despite his clearly expressing support for militarizing Ukraine. The most controversial aspect to the new Kissinger op-ed is sure to be found in the following lines wherein he suggests “internationally supervised referendums” for self-determination in eastern territories occupied by Russia and which are even now being intensely fought over. Below are Kissinger’s words:  “This process has mooted the original issues regarding Ukraine’s membership in Nato. Ukraine has acquired one of the largest and most effective land armies in Europe, equipped by America and its allies. A peace process should link Ukraine to Nato, however expressed. The alternative of neutrality is no longer meaningful, especially after Finland and Sweden joined Nato. This is why, last May, I recommended establishing a ceasefire line along the borders existing where the war started on 24 February. Russia would disgorge its conquests thence, but not the territory it occupied nearly a decade ago, including Crimea. That territory could be the subject of a negotiation after a ceasefire.”“If the pre-war dividing line between Ukraine and Russia cannot be achieved by combat or by negotiation, recourse to the principle of self-determination could be explored. Internationally supervised referendums concerning self-determination could be applied to particularly divisive territories which have changed hands repeatedly over the centuries.”Kissinger then emphasizes that “The goal of a peace process would be twofold: to confirm the freedom of Ukraine and to define a new international structure, especially for Central and Eastern Europe. Eventually Russia should find a place in such an order.”Critics, and Ukraine itself, are sure to reject the Kissinger plan, given he floated the possibility of referendums for those contested territories “which have changed hands repeatedly over the centuries” [i.e.: particularly the Donbas]. Indeed this has already begun, with some outright dismissing his peace plan as “delusional”… Without doubt there will also be forthcoming howls of Kissinger having turned ‘pro-Kremlin’ or even accusations the elderly diplomat has been “compromised” by Putin.This is especially as he seemed to directly appeal to the hawks in Washington and NATO in writing, “The preferred outcome for some is a Russia rendered impotent by the war. I disagree. For all its propensity to violence, Russia has made decisive contributions to the global equilibrium and to the balance of power for over half a millennium. Its historical role should not be degraded.”And followed with a warning of nuclear disaster on the horizon: “Russia’s military setbacks have not eliminated its global nuclear reach, enabling it to threaten escalation in Ukraine.”
