EU Chief Calls on World Leaders to Usher In Global ‘Digital ID’Frank BergmanSeptember 11, 2023 - 12:57 pm

The unelected head of the European Union, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, has called on leaders around the world to begin ushering in a global “digital ID” system for the public. The EU chief made the call during an address before the “One Future” session of the G20 Summit in India on Sunday. The powerful bureaucrat gloated about the digital infrastructure that the EU created for “vaccine passports.”She continued to note that the same system created for vaccine passports is now being updated to support global digital identification. While declaring the “future will be digital,” von der Leyen also called for globalist institutions to regulate artificial intelligence (AI) and the coming global digital ID.“Today I want to focus on AI and digital infrastructure,” said von der Leyen, the former German Defense Minister.“As it has been described, AI has risks but also offers tremendous opportunities.“The crucial question is how to harness a rapidly changing technology,” she said.    The future is digital. I passed two messages to the G20:→ We should establish a framework for safe, responsible AI, with a similar body as the IPCC for climate  → Digital public infrastructures are an accelerator of growth. They must be trusted, interoperable & open to all— Ursula von der Leyen (@vonderleyen) September 10, 2023-Von der Leyen also said the EU and its allies should develop a “global framework for AI risks.”While pushing for AI regulation, the Eurocrat also pushed for the technology controlled by the unelected United Nations.“In the EU, in 2020, we presented the first-ever law on artificial intelligence.“We want to facilitate innovation while building trust. But we need more,” she insisted.“What the world does now will shape our future.“I believe that Europe — and its partners — should develop a new global framework for AI risks.”“We would need a similar body to the IPCC for climate, and here we need additional outreach to the scientists entrepreneurs, and innovators,” von der Leyen said.“They need to provide the knowledge on the risks posed by AI – as well as the potential benefits for humanity.”The EU chief went on to argue for the adoption of “digital public infrastructures.”She cited the tyrannical vaccine passport system the EU imposed during the Covid pandemic. The system blocked anyone from traveling if couldn’t prove they had been vaccinated with Big Pharma injections.“Many of you are familiar with the COVID-19 digital certificate,” she said.“The EU developed it for itself.“The model was so functional and so trusted that 51 countries on 4 continents adopted it for free,” she gloated.Today, the WHO uses it as a global standard to facilitate mobility in times of health threats.“I want to thank Dr. Tedros again for the excellent cooperation,” she added, referring to the WHO’s unelected director-general.Meanwhile, the EU is already in the process of implementing a “digital identity” app.The smartphone app will contain a citizen’s passport, driver’s license, medical history, other personal information, and a wallet for coming central bank digital currency (CBDC).In the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) vision of a digital future, those who don’t use such an app will be locked out of society.“Digital IDs” and related apps are not limited to Europe, however, as advocates of such systems insist that everyone on Earth will be required to comply.Such measures are already being pushed in the U.S..Last month, Bill Gates unveiled a digital ID system he claims will serve as “an effective tool against poverty,” as Slay News reported. In announcing the system, Gates declared that his goal is to ensure that every single person in the world can “prove their identity.”The state of California is also now testing a soft rollout of “mobile” driving licenses (MDL) for its residents. The driver’s details are stored in a digital smartphone app that uses face-scanning technology. The DMV claims the app is “an easy, secure, and convenient companion identification to your physical card.”Meanwhile, the WEF and the globalist organization’s allies have been pushing such technology for some time. The Canadian and Dutch governments have already “partnered” with the WEF for its “Digital Identity Program.”According to the WEF, “cashless societies” and “digital IDs” will give unelected bureaucrats and corporate elites “absolute control” over the world’s population.

United Nations Planning Digital ID Linked to Bank Accounts-Frank Bergman-June 18, 2023 - 12:57 pm

The United Nations (UN) is planning to introduce a global digital ID system that is linked to individuals’ bank accounts. The plan, which is similar to the system developed by the World Economic Forum (WEF), is outlined in three new policy briefs from the UN titled, “A Global Digital Compact, Reforms to the International Financial Architecture, and The Future of Outer Space Governance.”The goal of the briefs is to advance UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’s “vision for the future.”Officially titled “Our Common Agenda,” Guterres’ “vision” should be given the green light in September 2024 during an event dubbed, “The Summit for the Future.”From the report:Digital IDs linked with bank or mobile money accounts can improve the delivery of social protection coverage and serve to better reach eligible beneficiaries.Digital technologies may help to reduce leakage, errors and costs in the design of social protection programmes. Not unlike their unofficial counterparts over at the WEF, the UN also speaks about basically regulating the global digital future. The unelected organization uses phrases such as “international cooperation” and “many stakeholders” who will “advance principles, objectives, and actions” to describe this globalist agenda. The UN describes this goal as “an open, free, secure and human-centered digital future.”The digital future as envisaged by these groups is going to be quite the opposite of open, free, or human-centric, however. As far as the UN’s “vision” for a future global financial system, it is supposed to be harmonized with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It would be governed by something called “the apex body” that is yet to be set up.The key actors here would be the UN chief, as well as the Group of 20, the Economic and Social Council, and “heads of international financial institutions.”Within this, the UN sees “visions” of “a Global Digital Compact.”Essentially, the objective is to have people, devices, and entities, all tied up in a connected network that could apparently be centrally administered, seemingly by unelected bureaucrats. When those planning this future scheme worry about any negative impact, they never see it as potentially affecting everyone – but only “civil society (…) or selected groups excluded from social benefits.”Meanwhile, the WEF has just partnered with a leading biometrics company to advance its own agenda to digitize humanity.
Swedish biometrics company Fingerprint Cards has taken a big step into the WEF’s New Champions Community, an assembly of mid-sized enterprises. The WEF is keen to promote biometric forms of digital ID and claims the technology would serve as a steward of “social inclusion.”The New Champions Community’s schedule includes a meeting in Tianjin, China from June 27 to 29 during the WEF Summer Davos gathering.Charles Burgeat, Senior Vice President of Strategy at Fingerprint Cards, imparted what he thought was a nugget of wisdom: “As a proud member of the WEF New Champions Community program, we want to be recognized as a purpose-driven company that contributes positively to the changes needed to operate in the new digitalized world.“By joining this Community, we look forward to brainstorming and exchanging ideas with peers, and bring our expertise of the biometrics industry.”Fingerprint Cards faced choppy waters in Q1 of 2023, posting a loss of 70 million Swedish krona ($6.4 million) on a revenue of SEK 117 million ($10.8 million), Biometric Update reported. However, the firm plowed forward, achieving key milestones, including integrating its fingerprint biometrics in 700 Android smartphones and shipping 1 million biometric sensor modules for payment cards.Xiaomi’s Redmi K60 secured the distinction of being the first smartphone boasting Fingerprint Cards’ under-display tech.Xiaomi is a Chinese tech company. The WEF, already well-versed in the digital tapestry of biometrics, continues to champion the sector. The organization previously inducted Yoti into an associated coalition.

Macron calls on leaders for a “true European Army” to protect EU from China, Russia...and US-Thursday, November 8th 2018 - 08:30 UTC

“Who is the main victim? Europe and its security. We must have a Europe that can defend itself on its own without relying only on the United States.”French President Emmanuel Macron has warned that Europeans cannot be protected without a “true, European army”, as he marks the centenary of the World War One Armistice. On a visit to the former Western Front in Verdun, he said Russia had shown it could be a threat and Europe had to be able “to defend itself better alone”. Russia's president will be among world leaders marking the Armistice in Paris.Macron has already proposed a joint intervention force for crisis missions. German Chancellor Angela Merkel backed the idea of an intervention force in June, but said it would have to be part of “the structure of defense co-operation”.The UK, while in favor of such a joint force, is opposed to a European army, because of the potential risk of creating a parallel structure to NATO.President Macron has already warned that Europeans can no longer rely on the US to defend them, and he revived the theme on Tuesday, in response to President Donald Trump's decision to pull out of a 1987 nuclear treaty with Russia, banning medium-range ground-launched missiles.“We have to protect ourselves with respect to China, Russia and even the United States of America,” he told French radio station Europe 1.“Who is the main victim? Europe and its security. I want to build a real security dialogue with Russia, which is a country I respect, a European country - but we must have a Europe that can defend itself on its own without relying only on the United States.”But could Europe really stand up to Russia alone? And what of the longer-term threat from China? The US relationship may be problematic but it could be becoming more important than ever.Last week Macron warned of the “leprosy” of nationalism spreading worldwide and declared that he had been struck by the similarities of current times and the period between World War One and World War Two.UK Prime Minister Theresa May will join Mr Macron on Friday at the Somme while President Trump will join dozens of world leaders for Sunday's ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.During his interview Mr Macron warned that there was anger against a “too ultra-liberal Europe that no longer allows our middle classes a decent living”. He spoke of Europe that was becoming increasingly fractured and singled out the UK's vote to leave the EU as part of that disenchantment.

EU’s Breton calls for ‘pause and reset’ in transatlantic relationship-The comment made by a top EU official comes following the ongoing dispute between France and the United States over a security deal involving the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia.By Laurens Cerulus and Gavin Bade-September 21, 2021 5:18 pm CET

A top EU official today urged Europe and the United States to "pause and reset" their "broken" relationship, adding fuel to an ongoing dispute between France and Washington over a new security deal between the U.S., U.K. and Australia. The EU's Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton — an appointee of the French government under President Emmanuel Macron — made the comment during a visit to Washington where he met with U.S. counterparts to discuss coronavirus policies, technology and cybersecurity issues."I planned this visit to the U.S. weeks ago with a positive agenda, to deepen EU-U.S. cooperation [but] something has changed," Breton is expected to say at a virtual event, according to prepared notes shared with reporters. "There is a growing feeling in Europe – and I say this with regret – that something is broken in our transatlantic relations.""There is a strong perception that trust between the EU and U.S. has been eroded," Breton will say, singling out the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and last week's security cooperation agreement between Washington, London and Canberra as key reasons. "It is probably time to pause and reset our EU-U.S. relationship."Breton's remarks come after other EU leaders on Monday accused U.S. President Joe Biden of disloyalty and demanded he explain why he misled France and other European partners in forging a new strategic tie-up with the U.K. and Australia. The so-called AUSUK deal meant that Canberra canceled a deal worth more than €50 billion to buy French submarines. The United States tried to ease European concerns on Monday when it announced a sudden decision to lift coronavirus travel restrictions for fully-vaccinated Europeans looking to fly to the U.S. from November onward. The decision to lift restrictions is "a welcome – but logical – decision given the success of the vaccination campaign in the EU," Breton will say.European diplomats are currently deliberating whether to cancel or postpone an upcoming EU-U.S. summit to discuss joint policies on technology and trade. The first meeting of the Trade and Tech Council is scheduled for September 29, in Pittsburgh, but the diplomatic crisis means the EU could cancel the gathering altogether, officials told POLITICO.

Israel hypes India-Saudi-EU trade corridor, but it’s a bit player in US-China bout-Netanyahu sees Haifa as a hub of the infrastructure network announced by Biden, Modi, and others, but that doesn’t mean a Saudi deal, or anything else, is in the offing-Lazar Berman-By Lazar Berman Today, 6:59 am 1

There was much excitement among Israel’s leadership after Saturday’s announcement at the G20 summit that India, Saudi Arabia, the United States, the European Union and others would create an ambitious rail and shipping corridor that will link the subcontinent with the Middle East and Europe.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed it as nothing less than “a cooperation project that is the greatest in our history.”Not surprisingly, he portrayed Israel as the hub of the ambitious system: “Our country Israel will be a central junction in this economic corridor, our railways and our ports will open a new gateway from India through the Middle East to Europe, and back.”Netanyahu’s National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi called the plan “the most meaningful evidence” that Saudi-Israel normalization was advancing from “a shot in the dark” to a realistic opportunity with tangible goals. But the initiative, which would rival China’s Belt and Road scheme, if it happens at all, is much less about normalization — or about Israel — than Jerusalem is letting on.“It’s significant, but not for the reasons Israelis might think,” said Yoel Guzansky, senior research fellow at the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv.Switching tracks-Regional experts emphasized that the project is a direct result of the growing US-China rivalry.“It’s part of  President Biden’s efforts to bring the Indians into the US camp,” said Efraim Inbar, president of the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security.Guzansky said that the project should be understood as a sign of Washington’s ambitions in the region, after it appeared to cede some influence in the Middle East to China.“The bigger picture is the US signaling that it’s coming back to the Indian Ocean and to the Middle East, or that it never left,” Guzansky explained. “This is vis-a-vis China. This is the game. I think something happened in March when the Chinese sponsored the Saudi-Iranian agreement.”That month, Riyadh and Tehran surprised Washington by announcing the reestablishment of diplomatic ties in China’s capital, a major diplomatic win for Beijing.“There was a wake-up call in the White House,” Guzansky argued. “Since then, you see attempts to dust off all kinds of initiatives and programs around normalization with Israel and all kinds of things with Iran, with Saudi Arabia.”But the proposed network doesn’t serve only US interests. It also answers pressing Indian concerns. One of India’s biggest challenges comes from its neighbor China, which has been investing heavily in a series of roads, rails and seaports across the globe as part of its Belt and Road Initiative, which is designed to give Beijing more control over trade flowing through Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and Europe.New Delhi, which sees China’s modern Silk Road scheme as a curb on its own growth and international trade, initially sought to avoid being hemmed in, creating its own corridor linking Mumbai to Moscow via Central Asia and Iran.US President Joe Biden passes a note to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, during a virtual meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, from the State Dining Room of the White House, March 12, 2021, in Washington. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)-But the project — known as the International North-South Transit Corridor — has largely failed to get off the ground. With the signing of the Abraham Accords in 2020, India was presented with a new opportunity to challenge Chinese designs on regional and global trade.Proposed rail networks between Israel and the UAE would allow India to ship goods to the Emirates, which would then be spirited by train across Saudi Arabia and Jordan before crossing into Israel at Beit Shean and chugging into seaside Haifa. From there, goods would be shipped to Greece’s Piraeus port, one of the largest in Europe, giving India access to the entire continent.Oshrit Birvadker, senior fellow at the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security, said that the economic corridor is an integral part of the national rebranding that the Narendra Modi administration is pursuing, part of which is showing that India can compete with the Chinese in manufacturing.“The western route of the corridor will shorten the time the goods arrive in Europe and even lower their prices,” Birdavker explained. The route will make use of the massive port complex in Mundra, on the Arabian Sea, which she described as among the most advanced in the world.“This new connectivity constitutes a strategic paradigm shift of enormous geopolitical consequence that could reshape [India’s] role in the Eurasian economic order,” according to Michael Tanchum of the University of Navarra in Spain, who researches strategic connectivity networks between Asia, Europe and Africa.Meet India’s Arabian-Mediterranean Corridor to Europe-????????-????????-????????-????????-????????-???????? = A Eurasian #geopolitics gamechanger-See my new 44-page report "India’s Arab-Mediterranean Corridor: A Paradigm Shift in Strategic #Connectivity to Europe" via @ISASNus-????https://t.co/gcg70IUumK pic.twitter.com/f8EZvzsd2m— Prof. Michael Tanchum (@michaeltanchum) September 1, 2021-Goods could reach Europe from Mumbai within 10 days, according to Tanchum — 40 percent quicker than the Suez Canal route.Missing links-In 2021, the Transportation Ministry announced that it had given the green light for a rail line connecting Haifa to Beit She’an to be extended east by several kilometers to the Jordanian border, where a new goods depot would also be built. However, that link has yet to move forward, and 300 kilometers (186 miles) of rail remain to be built in Jordan and Saudi Arabia.Plans for the regional rail link, an idea dating back to the Ottoman era, have been bandied about for years, and were highlighted again by Netanyahu in July, but there is no guarantee that the political will and the funding will materialize. Despite a recent thaw, Jordan is still extremely wary of cooperating too closely with Israel on public projects, and the Saudis still do not officially recognize Israel.Jordan’s existing Ottoman-era rail network is woefully underdeveloped, and is of a different gauge than tracks in Saudi Arabia and Israel.“The railroads that are being built between the Gulf states have so many problems, and it’s still not there yet after so many years,” Guzansky explained. “And there’s political and personal and tribal and all kinds of obstacles in its way. And you have so many countries, Israel, Arab countries. It won’t be easy. ”Inbar pointed at Indian bureaucracy as the biggest obstacle.“It’s good for everyone,” said Inbar. “The question is the implementation.”In May, the US-based Moody’s Investors Service released a report contending that India’s “higher bureaucracy in decision-making” would reduce its attractiveness to investors.“I think it will be a long time until we’ll see something,” said Guzansky. “I’m not sure who will finance it, who will give the money to build this infrastructure.”China, the world leader in funding and carrying out infrastructure mega-projects, would be a natural choice, but Beijing is unlikely to cooperate with a US-backed initiative meant to undermine its own priorities.“It’s hard for me to see it materialize,” said Guzansky. “I think it’s more of a statement or intention that the US is investing in India.”Connectivity-Jerusalem might wish that the project was a firm signal that normalization with Saudi Arabia was in the offing, but it doesn’t hinge on that deal. Saudi rail lines will connect with Jordan, not Israel, and Riyadh has implemented other transportation agreements affecting Israel while making it clear they have nothing to do with recognition.Last summer, Saudi Arabia opened its airspace to Israeli aircraft, saying in a statement that it was announcing “the decision to open the Kingdom’s airspace for all air carriers that meet the requirements of the authority for overflying.”Still, there would likely be benefits for Israel.“It could mean better trade, perhaps, with the Arabian Peninsula if there’s a railroad,” said Guzansky. “The connectivity with the Gulf is important for all kinds of products that will reach Haifa.”The Foreign Ministry declined to offer comment on the regional initiative.“Although we Israelis always think we are the center of the world,” said Guzansky, “we’re not.”

Ahead of holidays, Jewish and congressional leaders urge increased security funding-Federal Nonprofit Security Grant Program used to secure Jewish institutions falls short of demand as antisemitism spikes in US, Jewish groups say-By Luke Tress Today, 7:51 am 0

WASHINGTON — Jewish community leaders, security experts and congressional representatives on Tuesday called for increased funding for nonprofit security at a briefing in Washington, DC, highlighting threats to Jews ahead of the High Holidays. The speakers focused on funding provided by the US government’s Nonprofit Security Grant Program, which is used to protect Jewish communities and other organizations, but falls short of the demand. For the 2023 funding cycle, the acceptance rate for grant applications fell below 42 percent, down from 52% last year. A total of 5,257 grant applications were submitted, and 2,201 were approved, according to the Jewish Federations of North America. The $305 million available fell short of the $679 million that was requested in the applications, the federations said.“It has become more critical than ever for our safety. We need that funding,” said House Representative Kathy Manning, a Democrat from North Carolina. “It simply is not enough.”Manning, a former board chair for the Jewish Federations, called on her colleagues in Congress to support more security measures, and for an increase in the grant program to $360 million.Applicants for the funding are evaluated through a scoring process, and those that are seen as the most vulnerable and most in need are moved up the list, said Karen Paikin Barall, an associate vice president at the Jewish Federations who deals with the grant procedures. The funding is distributed fairly but there isn’t enough to go around, she said, pointing to the amount of resources needed to secure Jewish holiday events, when many more people attend services than usual.“There isn’t a security camera or security door that isn’t in some way costly and needing the help and support of these resources,” said Jewish Federations head Eric Fingerhut. In addition to the Nonprofit Security Grant Program, the federations operates a $130 million security campaign called LiveSecure. The briefing was also attended by Senator Chris Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat; Republican Senator James Lankford of Oklahoma; New Jersey Representative Chris Smith, a Republican; leaders of the Anti-Defamation League, the Orthodox Union, and the Secure Community Network, which coordinates security for North American Jewish communities; and representatives of other Jewish groups.Speakers at the briefing denounced extremist discourse and hatred as fueling potential violence, and called to combat hate speech, as well as step up security for Jewish institutions.“Pundits, politicians and platforms have embraced the type of hate and conspiracies that were previously for the fringes of society,” said Meredith Weisel, the Washington, DC regional director for the ADL. The organization has been targeted by Elon Musk on his platform X, formerly known as Twitter, with antisemitic tropes. Musk has loosened rules on X in the name of free speech, which critics say has opened the door for extremism and hate speech.“We find ourselves now at a critical moment where the Jewish community is unfortunately once again in the crosshairs,” Weisel said. The ADL has reported a record number of antisemitic incidents across the US in recent years. The head of the Secure Community Network, Michael Masters, called for vigilance ahead of the High Holidays and urged worshipers to ask questions about their community security protocols and engage with safety procedures.Synagogues should take steps to secure their livestreams, including by verifying viewers, he said, amid a rash of bomb threats and swatting attacks against synagogues. Many of the incidents take place during livestreams, when attackers know a synagogue is active and can view the results of their disruptions.“Like we see in the State of Israel, we know we can overcome and protect our people,” Masters said. “We don’t want people questioning or choosing not to go to synagogue or participate in Jewish life because they’re fearful.”“What you shouldn’t do is be afraid and not do anything and not show up,” he said.Jewish communities have bolstered their security in recent years, especially after a white supremacist shooter massacred 11 worshipers at a Pittsburgh synagogue in 2018. Basic measures like reinforced doors, security cameras and a working relationship with local law enforcement are effective means to protect Jewish institutions including synagogues, summer camps and day schools, security experts have said. That success was on display last month in Memphis when an armed man attempted to access the Margolin Hebrew Academy. The suspect, a former student who was apparently suffering a mental health crisis, was blocked from entering, fired his gun outside the school, and left the campus. He was tracked down and shot by police shortly after.“I was on the phone when I heard the first gunshots,” Brandy Flack, the school’s executive director, said at the briefing. “I looked out the window and I saw a man pointing a gun at me.”The school had upgraded its doors weeks before the incident with funding from the Nonprofit Security Grant Program, a measure that kept the shooter out of the building. The school used its security cameras to determine that there were no other shooters at the scene and catch the suspect’s license plate, helping police locate him. The staff’s relationship with law enforcement and security groups helped alert others about the threat, and within five minutes of the shooting, all of the area’s Jewish organizations and schools were on lockdown, Flack said.“Nobody had to wonder what to do,” Flack said. “This grant, simply and clearly stated, saved lives.”“There will be another attack. It’s an unfortunate reality,” she said.

Netanyahu calls for ‘more unity’ and agreements ahead of Jewish New Year-PM sounds conciliatory note after his government’s judicial overhaul plans sparks sharp divide, mass protests; says Israel has real opportunity for peace with Saudis-By ToI Staff-SEP 13,23-Today, 3:04 pm 0

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday called for unity among Israel’s citizens ahead of the Jewish New Year, saying the nation needs to come together to face threats from Iran and embrace new opportunities in the form of a possible peace with Saudi Arabia.Speaking at a holiday event at his office, Netanyahu said he wished “that in the new year there will be more unity in the nation, fewer divisions among us, and that starts with realizing that all of us, at least most of us, are one people, with one country, one army, with a common past and a common future.”Netanyahu’s comments come after a year in which his hardline government launched a radical judicial overhaul that has sparked eight months of mass demonstrations, large-scale refusals by army reservists to show up for volunteer duty, and dire warnings that the moves would undermine the country’s democracy, security and economy.“In a democracy, there are always different opinions, that’s the nature of democracy,” he said.“But if we agree to agree then we can reach agreements,” he said, hinting at his reported willingness to forge a deal with opposition lawmakers to soften the legislation. “That’s our goal and I think it is possible,” he said.Netanyahu said unity was necessary to face up to the country’s security challenges and to embrace future opportunities.“There is an effort being led by Iran and its cancerous proxies to deepen the terror,” Netanyahu said.He also said Israel faced a prospect of peace with Saudi Arabia that would “change Israel, the Middle East, and possibly the whole world.”The US has been negotiating a normalization deal between Israel and Saudi Arabia, but chances of reaching such a deal, which would require major concessions to the Palestinians, are slim so long as Netanyahu is reliant on the far-right members of his coalition. The US has sounded out opposition leaders Yair Lapid and Benny Gantz about their willingness to join a Netanyahu-led government to help push through a deal with Riyadh; however, they have so far reportedly refused.Netanyahu also mentioned recently signed plans to build a rail and shipping corridor linking India with the Middle East and Europe, with Israel playing a part.Netanyahu said the agreement, together with a Saudi deal, “would transform the region into a giant corridor of vital infrastructure.”“Israel is becoming a bridgehead to the world. It’s a massive change. Each and every one of you will feel it,” he said.

NOW WITH ALL THE MILLIONS OF MIGRANTS COMING TO CANADA AND AMERICA. ALL KINDS OF ILLEGALS IN THAT BUNCH. THE GOVERNMENTS WILL NEED TO KEEP TRACK OF THEM TO SEE IF THEY GET IN TROUBLE. SINCE MOST OF THE MIGRANTS HAVE 7 YEARS BEFORE THEY HAVE TO GO TO THE OFFICIAL OFFICE TO BE COUNTED BY. SO HOW CAN THE WEST CAN-AMER KEEP TRACK OF ALL THESE MIGRANTS. WELL THIS DIGITAL ID CARD WILL BE THE FIRST STEP. THEN WHEN THE MIGRANTS EITHER LOSE THEIR CARDS OR COUNTERFIT THESE CARDS. AND END UP DOING TERRORIST ATTACKS IN CANADA AND AMERICA. THEN THE GOVERNMENT WILL SAY. ITS TIME TO MICROCHIP THESE MIGRANTS TO KEEP TRACK OF THEM 24 HOURS A DAY. AND THEN ALL AFTER THAT WILL BE ASKED TO BE MICROCHIPED IN THEIR RIGHT HAND OR FORHEAD. AND THE EUROPEAN UNION I PREDICT WILL BE THE LEADERS AND COUNTRIES TO IMPLIMENT THIS ON ALL PEOPLE WORLDWIDE. STARTING WITH THE HOMELESS, MIGRANTS AND DISABILTY CITIZENS. THEN ALL.

Biometric ID is a tool for migrant instrumentalization in Nigeria, study argues-Sep 11, 2023, 12:23 pm EDT    | Ayang Macdonald

An academic study on migrants from five central and west African countries seeking refuge in Nigeria has found that biometric identification is among four aspects fueling migrant instrumentalization especially for election purposes in that part of Africa.Migrant instrumentalization is a phenomenon whereby a country uses migrants to exert pressure on another for reasons which could be political or economic, a concept often hinged on geopolitical analysis. Such instrumentalization could also manifest through political mobilization where actors within a state such as politicians use it for various political ends.According to the study, whose results are published by an academic journal Taylor & Francis Online, the migrants used as primary sources of data are from Cameroon, Chad, Benin, Niger and Togo.Other factors responsible for such instrumentalization and manipulation of migrants, per the study, include regional migration regimes, state identity policies and politics, as well as monetary inducement.Growing biometric adoption and migrant mobilization for electionsThe authors note that while there is an increasing adoption of biometric ID systems in Africa, its deployment especially among migrants and undocumented groups is happening in a somewhat distorted or irregular manner and that is raising considerable political consequences which are not sufficiently discussed. To demonstrate the growth of biometrics technology adoption on the continent, the study notes that the biometrics and digital identity document market is estimated at €1.4 billion (US$1.5 billion) by specialist firm Acuity Market Intelligence, with some of the biggest players in the industry running huge contracts. The researchers argue that “the political mobilisation of migrants for election purposes in West Africa, especially in the context of Nigeria and her neighbours, presents a form of migrant instrumentalization which has been perpetrated by both state and non-state actors, and sometimes through mid-level intermediaries.”They cite instances where some refugees from Niger in Nigeria were found in the past with either biometric national ID cards or permanent voter’s cards (PVC), documents which are supposed to be held only by bona fide Nigerian citizens. This, according to the authors, has largely been blamed on the lack of migrant integration into diverse programs in their host countries, coupled with the poor management of migrant data which has led to poor migrant governance.Recall that the West Africa economic and political bloc (ECOWAS) is running a World-Bank sponsored West Africa Unique Identification for Regional Integration and Inclusion (WURI) project which is intended to streamline regional movements and access to services for regional citizens including labor mobility, social registries, health and pensions, as well as financial inclusion.“The growing use of digital biometric systems in Nigeria is clearly reshaping how people vote and who can vote in elections,” the study observes, but indicates that about 22.6 percent of voters for Nigeria’s general election in 2023 were identified by the ABIS system as ineligible. The report asserts that the biometric voter system “is most at risk of being retooled for electoral purposes by state actors who mobilize non-Nigerians to enroll as eligible voters. This eroded electoral integrity and the credibility of elections.”The study calls biometric registration for migrants in Nigeria who have not had full citizenship status of their host country as “biometric nationality,” obtained through registration for the digital ID, the bank verification number (BVN), the voter ID (PVC) and a SIM card. Nigeria’s ID law allows migrants to enroll for IDs, which is what the authors say has made it possible for them to register for elections, albeit illegitimately. Some of the migrants are quoted by the researchers as saying that their travel to Nigeria was coordinated by powerful people, possibly politicians, who ensured their safe passage and stay in the country. Some admitted they had registered for the electoral roll and were ready to cast their ballot during election time.“A predominant political network built on migrants’ patronage is always reinforced in each election cycle. Some Nigerian politicians traditionally engage in pre-election purchase of PVCs. It is at this rallying point that the confluent interests of the politicians and the migrants coincide and intricately weave into a coherent bias towards election manipulation,” a portion of the report states. As a result of the many issues arising from migrant instrumentalization and mobilization for election purposes, the researchers raise critical questions, first on whether state actors should allow open borders in line with the ECOWAS 1979 free movement protocol even if some migrants do not have formal travel documentary requirements. In conclusion, the research paper notes that mobilizing migrants with “biometric nationality” for purposes of election manipulation not only undermines the credibility of the electoral process, but also delegitimizes the state, subverts the ECOWAS protocol on free movement, and violates the Constitution of Nigeria.

Accept ID cards or face fine, Philippines tells public agencies, banks-Regional digital ID registration campaign targets 1M poor Filipinos
Sep 8, 2023, 11:15 am EDT-| Masha Borak

After complaints from low-income residents of the Philippines saying that some government offices and financial institutions have refused to accept their national IDs, the regional government agency in charge of the country’s digital identity project has warned that they may face fines. The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) in the Western Visayas region reminded this week that the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys) Identification Card (PhilID) is a valid proof of identity, Panay News reports. For some citizens of the island nation, the PhilID or PhilSys Number is their only valid proof of identity. Those that refuse to accept it face sanctions under Section 19 of RA 1105 with fines reaching 500,000 Philippine pesos (US$8,820), the agency noted. The Philippine Statistics Authority also said that the region, known for its famous tourist destination Boracay, still has around one million backlogs in national IDs. The office also plans to enroll 1 million indigents or extremely poor residents from Western Visayas in the PhilSys this year, according to the Philippine News Agency.Registration for the national digital ID includes biometrics enrollment.“We target 50 percent of the 2 million,” says Nelida Amolar, PSA’s chief statistical specialist. “We will be registering more or less 1 million. We still have a backlog when it comes to our target.”As of the end of July this year, the PSA had registered 79.12 percent of the region’s population of 7.9 million. Around 2.2 million have received an electronic copy of their PhilSys ID, while 3.7 million have physical ID cards. But the office has struggled to reach inhabitants living in far-flung areas.

Yoti partners on public transport digital ID for Northern Ireland students-Sep 12, 2023, 3:54 pm EDT-| Bianca Gonzalez

Translink, Northern Ireland’s main public transportation provider, announced that it has partnered with the age verification provider Yoti to introduce a digital ID for travel on busses and trains by 13- to 16-year-old students to have an easier way to provide proof of age. The free app allows young passengers to purchase child fares at 50 percent off the standard bus and rail fares.Users can download the Translink Travel U16 Youth ID credential from the Yoti app, available on Google Play or the Apple App Store. Users create an account with a phone number, five-digit PIN, and a school email address. They add a selfie to verify identity and prove they are a real person. The selfie is then used to make a biometric key. When a user takes certain actions in the app, they will be prompted to submit a selfie or face scan to ensure they are not being impersonated. The digital travelcard is more secure than its physical counterpart as it cannot be lost or stolen. It also minimizes paper waste. The digital ID itself is stored in the app and the users’ data will be protected from being accessed or sold to third parties. A user’s personal data cannot be forwarded to any business or individual unless they decide to do so.“It is well recognised that using the bus or train to school provides children with independence, develops social skills and provides a safe, cost-effective mode of transport,” said Translink brand representative Maeve Nethercott, noting that young people may also favor public transport to reduce emissions and fight climate change.“The Translink Travel U16 Youth ID card will make it even easier for young people to provide proof of age and benefit from cheaper travel, so we would encourage all 13-16 year olds to sign up and stay better connected to school and leisure activities.”Amolar assured the public that the IDs will be delivered and ready for release within this year with registration starting in schools and government institutions from September 15.

Digital ID group calls for biometrics code in NZ to avoid stifling innovation-Sep 12, 2023, 2:45 pm EDT-| Ayang Macdonald

Digital Identity New Zealand (DINZ), an organization making expert contributions to New Zealand’s digital transformation efforts, has underlined the need to prioritize an intense awareness and education program related to the intricacies of biometrics deployment in the country. This call is contained in a submission by the group and it comes as the Office of the Privacy Commissioner (OPC) is considering a code of practice that will regulate the use of the technology that has become a common feature in the daily lives of New Zealanders, according to a DINZ news release. From online ID verification to border control, to law enforcement, retail security, access control and attendance monitoring in offices and schools, the deployment of biometrics in growing by the day in New Zealand and users are also getting worried about the potential risks of the technology if it is deployed improperly.“Our response focuses on striking a balance between protecting individuals’ privacy and allowing responsible government and business use of biometric data. We emphasize the importance of a thoughtful and well-informed approach to considering the potential for regulation of the use of biometrics, tailored to the unique challenges of this technology,” says Colin Wallis, DINZ executive director. He adds that because biometrics are increasingly taking a preponderant place in the lives of citizens, the need for “demonstrable privacy and technical expertise, alongside practical experience combined with good design and implementation, are keys to great outcomes.”In the submission, DINZ advises the OPC on five key things to consider as it figures out a biometrics code of practice. On privacy protection, the organization believes that users can have assurance about adequate privacy protection if privacy impact assessment as sated in the Privacy Act 2020 is made mandatory. This, it says, will help “avoid unintended consequences, elevate industry standards and prevent subpar practices.”Among other things, DINZ calls for clarification on which definition of biometrics should apply to New Zealand before a code of practice is considered, suggests that regulatory changes should primarily safeguard individuals’ privacy in identification and verification processes, advises OPC to exercise caution and avoid rushing into implementing a code of practice which could trigger a change towards “compliance behaviour” that will stifle innovation.“The proposals for a code could suspend, reduce, or delay use of biometric information, to the detriment of information security and customer service,” DINZ writes in response to the OPC’s question about potential unintended consequences of its regulation. “The proposals could also stunt development and innovation that would in time improve the accuracy and acceptability of less well known/trusted use cases.”A similar point about the risk of stifling biometrics innovation with overly restrictive regulation has also been made by, biometrics developers like FaceFirst, government officials, and even the International Association of Privacy Professionals. The group also recommends that OPC collaborate with industry experts to co-create guidance on biometric information’s use in identification and verification.

Interoperable digital public infrastructure can speed up Africa’s economic integration, prosperity-Prembly CEO pitches integration, Flutterwave launches forex platform-Sep 12, 2023, 1:11 pm EDT-| Ayang Macdonald

Intra-African commerce is being held back by a lack of interoperability in digital identity systems and know your customer checks. This is the assessment of Lanre Ogungbe, co-founder and chief executive officer of biometric identity verification company Prembly, in an opinion piece published by Harvard Business Review.Building interoperable digital public infrastructure, expanding useful partnerships with the private sector and investing in energy and internet infrastructure can be a veritable recipe for Africa’s digital and economic integration and shared prosperity, he argues.According to Ogungbe, digital integration which he refers to as “creating shared systems and standard rules for digitalization across Africa,” will not only trigger economic growth in Africa, but will also lead to regional integration and even stronger global influence. He notes that digital integration in practice would include the harmonization of “digital financial systems, consistent continent-wide laws for digital activities, and shared regulatory technology like identity verification, digital taxation, and business registration systems.”As the Prembly CEO notes, a digitally integrated Africa will improve trade efficiency and market access, benefiting small businesses in particular.Another point highlighted by Ogungbe is the important role which private sector companies that have established strong presence across national borders can play in driving the digital integration agenda.“Fostering digital integration requires collaborations between these private players, governments, and regional bodies,” he writes, citing the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS) as a good example of how such partnership can work. PAPSS is a payments system launched early last year and powered by some of the biggest commercial banks on the continent. In the case of digital Identity, Ogungbe argues that “interoperable ID systems across the continent would allow for continent-wide know-your-customer systems, enabling access to financial services anywhere in Africa and thus making intra-African commerce easier.”He concludes that the inherent difficulties notwithstanding, governments that recognize the important of digital integration can work towards it.Flutterwave introduces foreign exchange platform with selfie biometrics-Getting access to foreign currency is another challenge to Africa’s economic integration.Nigerian fintech giant Flutterwave has launched a digital solution Swap in a bid to clear some of the challenges facing access to foreign exchange and liquidity in Nigeria. The platform, launched recently with the endorsement of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), will be operated in collaboration with a bureau de change (BDC) and a commercial bank. It will allow access to the U.S. dollar, Euro and the British pound for now, reports Tech Cabal. The Swap product requires identity verification via the user’s biometric bank verification number, a selfie for face biometrics matching, and other documentation.“We understand the FX access challenges individuals and businesses face. Swap is our answer to those pain points, providing a seamless and efficient platform for currency exchange,” said Flutterwave CEO and founder Olugbenga Agboola. The publication also quotes the acting governor of CBN Folashodun Shonubi as saying that the digital solution would address two major problems, one of which is the overdependence on cash.

McCarthy directs opening of Biden impeachment inquiry over son’s business activities-House speaker claims ‘culture of corruption’ around president’s family found by oversight panel, launching historic investigation amid budget talks and on eve of 2024 campaigns-By LISA MASCARO and Farnoush Amiri 12 September 2023, 8:03 pm 19

WASHINGTON (AP) — US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said Tuesday he is directing a House committee to open a formal impeachment inquiry into US President Joe Biden over his family’s business dealings, launching historic proceedings ahead of the 2024 election.McCarthy said the House Oversight Committee’s investigation so far has found a “culture of corruption” around the Biden family as Republicans probe the business dealings of Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, from before the Democratic president took office.“These are allegations of abuse of power, obstruction, and corruption, and they warrant further investigation by the House of Representatives,” McCarthy, a California Republican, said outside the speaker’s office at the Capitol. “That’s why today I am directing our House committee to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.”The announcement comes as the Republican leader faces mounting pressure from his right flank to take action against Biden while he also is struggling to pass legislation needed to avoid a federal government shutdown at the end of the month.McCarthy is planning to convene lawmakers behind closed doors multiple times this week, including for a meeting to discuss the Biden impeachment. The Republican leader is once again at a political crossroads — trying to keep his most conservative lawmakers satisfied and prevent his own ouster. It’s a familiar political bind for McCarthy, who is juggling the impeachment inquiry and the government shutdown threat with no clear end game.Biden’s White House has dismissed the impeachment push as politically motivated.“Speaker McCarthy shouldn’t cave to the extreme, far-right members who are threatening to shut down the government unless they get a baseless, evidence-free impeachment of President Biden. The consequences for the American people are too serious,” White House spokesman Ian Sams has said. The impeachment push comes as Trump, who was twice impeached by the House but acquitted by the Senate, faces more serious charges in court. Trump has been indicted four times this year, including for trying to overturn the 2020 election Biden won.“This is a transparent effort to boost Donald Trump’s campaign by establishing a false moral equivalency between Trump — the four-time-indicted former president,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee.House Republicans are probing the business dealings of Hunter Biden but so far have not produced hard evidence linking him and the president. They have shown a few instances largely during the time the elder Biden was Barack Obama’s vice president when he spoke by phone with his son and stopped by dinners his son was hosting with business partners.Rep. James Comer, the Republican chairman leading the Oversight Committee, is digging deeper into the Biden family finances and is expected to seek banking records for Hunter Biden as the panel tries to follow the flow of money. On Tuesday, Comer demanded the State Department produce documents about the work Biden did as vice president during the Obama administration to clean up corruption in Ukraine. Comer wants to understand the State Department’s views of former Ukrainian prosecutor Viktor Shokin, whom Biden and many Western allies wanted removed from office because of allegations of corruption. The White House has insisted Biden was not involved in his son’s business dealings. And Democrats on the Oversight Committee are stepping up to fight against what they view as unfounded claims against Biden ahead of the 2024 election, as the president seeks reelection. This comes as federal government funding is set to run out on September 30, which is the end of the federal fiscal year, and Congress must pass new funding bills or risk a shutdown and the interruption of government services.Conservatives who power McCarty’s majority want to slash spending, and the hard right is unwilling to approve spending levels the speaker negotiated with Biden earlier this year.McCarthy is trying to float a 30-day stopgap measure to keep the government running until November 1, but conservatives are balking at what’s called a continuing resolution, or CR, as they pursue cuts.Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Georgia Republican, said late Monday exiting McCarthy’s office she has “red lines” against any new money being spent for COVID-19 vaccines or mandates or Russia’s war in Ukraine.Another Republican, Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, a top Trump ally, is warning that McCarthy could face blowback from conservatives if he does not push hard for spending cuts.At the start of the year, Gaetz and other Republicans secured agreements from McCarthy as he struggled to win their votes to become House speaker.Under the House rules, McCarthy’s opponents are able to call a vote at any time to try to oust the speaker from office.

Reporter Shredded by GOP Rep for Claiming Americans See No Evidence for Biden Impeachment: ‘You Don’t Report It!’Frank Bergman-September 13, 2023 - 8:22 am

Republican Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA) humiliated a corporate media reporter for claiming during a press conference that Americans don’t see any evidence for impeaching Democrat President Joe Biden.During the Tuesday presser, Perry responded by pointing out several examples of evidence of Biden’s corruption. The congressman was responding to a question from UK Channel 4 Washington correspondent Siobhan Kennedy.Kennedy tried to claim that the American people have not seen evidence to support allegations against Biden before alleging that the move from Republicans is just “political revenge for the impeachment of Donald Trump.”Perry fired back by noting that many Americans are in the dark about the scandal because mainstream reporters like her “don’t report on it.”The exchange happened during a press conference held by members of Congress outside the Capitol Tuesday.Lawmakers addressed the media just a few hours after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) announced a congressional impeachment inquiry into President Biden.Perry, the House Freedom Caucus chair, motioned to Kennedy to ask him one final question before he left the podium. She said, “Can I just ask, what actual evidence do you have as opposed to allegations to show to the American people that would merit an actual impeachment inquiry of Joe Biden, and prove that today isn’t just about –”Before she could finish, Perry interjected with a sarcastic reply, saying: “Oh, I don’t know.”She then finished her question by asking whether the GOP is going after Biden “for the sake of enacting political revenge for the impeachment of Donald Trump.”Perry immediately shut Kennedy down.“This isn’t about political revenge,” he declared.“We have the bank accounts.“We can see – ma’am – you can see that the homes that the Bidens own can’t be afforded on a congressional or a Senate salary.”“You also understand that it’s not normal for family members to receive millions of dollars from overseas interests.“Those things aren’t normal,” he continued.“That’s not normal to have 20 shell companies.“These things are not normal, and it alludes to not only just widespread corruption, but money laundering, if not influence-peddling itself.”Adding in Biden’s self-proclaimed hand in the firing of a prosecutor looking into his son’s business dealings in Ukraine, Perry said, “And we also have the vice president at the time on record saying that the prosecutor was fired: ‘Well, son of a b—-, the prosecutor was fired.’“Because the prosecutor was going after the company that his son was working on.”“That’s what we have,” Perry proclaimed.“If you can’t see that. If you are that blind – I’ll turn it over to the attorneys,” he said as he invited others to replace him on the podium. As he walked away, the corporate media report tried to get in the last word, saying: “The American people can’t see that.“They think it’s political revenge.”Perry fired back, “Because you don’t report on it.”

Ethiopian government agencies partner on digital ID for health sector-Sep 11, 2023, 5:58 pm EDT-| Chris Burt

Ethiopia’s Ministry of Health and its national identity program have formed a partnership to integrate the Fayda digital ID with the country’s healthcare sector. The planned “Digital ID for Health” will serve as a patient registry while supporting national health insurance schemes, employee and professional licensing, and health records sharing, according to the government announcement. The collaboration between Ethiopia’s National Identity Program (NIDP) and the Ministry of Health is intended to simplify transactions and cut fraudulent claims through secure, real-time identity verification. The announcement does not provide specifics for how identity verification and user authentication will be carried out, but it could be through the biometrics captured during enrollment for Fayda.Simprints has been working with the government on a biometric digital ID to link patients with digital records since 2019, and just launched a tender for a consultant to help define the project’s next steps. The use of Fayda is also intended to improve administration and credential verification for increased transparency and enforcement of professional standards.Wait times for registration and patient records retrieval will fall, the government says, resulting in improved health service delivery. The integration of Fayda by various government ministries to reduce repeated identity verifications and registrations is a key goal of the NIDP.Madras Security Printers was recently selected as the provider for Fayda ID cards.

G20 recommends digital public infrastructure policy to drive financial inclusion-Sep 11, 2023, 12:36 pm EDT-| Ayang Macdonald

The group of the 19 most advanced economies in the world, the European Union, and mostly recently the African Union, the G20, has published a policy guide on how the development and deployment of digital public infrastructure (DPI) can advance financial inclusion and productivity gains in the Global South. The 78-page document, produced by the World Bank and the G20 Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion (GPFI), examines DPIs and their role in the financial sector. It examines how they can be an effective driver of financial inclusion and productivity, the potential areas for further exploration, as well as some case studies and use cases involving countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America. With an interoperable and open system, DPIs can foster inclusive economies and enable vulnerable groups to have access to critical services easily and securely through expedient payment platforms, the document notes, adding that such infrastructure also have the potential to lead nations towards meeting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). India recently signed an agreement with the UNDP to promote DPIs as a way of meeting the SDGs.Citing the India Stack which comprises the Aadhaar digital ID and the interoperable UPI digital payments platform among other DPIs as an example, the G20 believes DPIs can serve people not just in the financial sector, but also in the domains of health, education and social welfare. The policy publication holds that while “DPI has the potential to help countries leapfrog their digital transformation,” it can also “play a critical role in accelerating this digital transformation in an inclusive way.”It also remarks that while there has been a remarkable progress in global financial inclusion efforts thanks to emerging digital financial services (DFS), there is much that still remains to be done and DPIs can play the trick.“DPIs, if well managed, can lower transaction costs, catalyze innovation, foster competitiveness and interoperability, enhance individual user experiences and choice, and, though their design, provide new avenues to address many of the risks inherent to DFS.”For the private sector, DPIs can create opportunity for innovations, higher efficiency, and enable access to new markets and credits, if the enabling institutional and market conditions exist, it notes. In building such systems, the G20 document also suggests considerable focus on safety, trust and a robust data protection architecture. This is partly because DPIs have the potential to create new risks or render existing ones worse, the report says. These risks include operational, legal and regulatory, insolvency, exclusion and financial consumer protection problems. To tackle these risks and make DPIs a veritable vehicle for financial inclusion and productivity gains, authorities are called upon to properly design DPIs by creating the enabling environment for them through a widely acceptable set of good practices, encouraging appropriate risk-based regulation and supervision for their use in the financial sector, and promoting sound internal governance arrangements, among other measures. The recommendations in the policy document are indicative, voluntary and nonbinding. They are meant for public authorities but could also be useful to other relevant stakeholders.India’s UPI sees record monthly transactions in August-In a related story, India’s UPI payments system, which has become a critical pillar of the India Stack, reached a milestone last month with 10.58 billion transactions, up from the 9.98 billion in July, NDTV reports.Per the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI)- the body managing the platform -, this is a 67 percent jump year-on-year, with India’s Union Telecoms Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw hailing the “new record.”The NPCI said it was a milestone worth celebrating and called for the momentum to be sustained.India’s UPI has been attracting attention from many countries, with three African countries said to be in talks with India at the moment for partnerships aimed at enabling them to tap the UPI pool of experience.

The daughter of World Economic Forum (WEF) founder Klaus Schwab has declared that tyrannical restrictions during the Covid pandemic served as a precursor to coming “climate lockdowns.”According to Nicole Schwab, Covid was a “tremendous opportunity” to test how the public would comply with authoritarian measures that could be used to usher in the WEF’s “Great Reset” agenda. The WEF’s promotion of the “climate crisis” narrative seeks to “create a change that is not incremental…to position nature at the core of the economy,” according to the younger Schwab.

Health Canada approves Moderna's updated COVID-19 vaccine-Social Sharing-Shot targets Omicron XBB.1.5 subvariant, deliveries to provinces expected in early October-Lauren Pelley · CBC News · Posted: Sep 12, 2023 11:09 AM EDT |

Health Canada has approved Moderna's updated COVID-19 vaccine for all Canadians who are six months of age and older — while two other options for fall shots remain in the regulatory pipeline.Federal officials announced the approval on Tuesday morning, more than two months after Moderna submitted its new formulation. The mRNA-based shot is monovalent, targeting just the Omicron XBB.1.5 subvariant, which means the vaccine is more tailored to the virus strains currently circulating. The company told CBC News that its first newly approved doses should arrive in Canada "by tomorrow" and will continue to arrive over the course of the month, while Canadian officials expect deliveries to the provinces will start in October.."I know we all wish COVID-19 no longer existed, but people are still getting infected, and vaccination continues to be one of the most effective ways to protect ourselves against serious outcomes," said Dr. Supriya Sharma, chief medical advisor at Health Canada, during a technical briefing.Health Canada said Canadians age five and up should receive one dose, regardless of their COVID vaccination history. Meanwhile children from six months to four years old should receive two doses if they have not been previously vaccinated with a COVID vaccine, or one dose if they've previously had at least one dose. Not boosters-Notably, federal officials aren't calling the shots boosters but instead stressed that these are updated options more similar to an annual flu shot. The COVID situation hasn't stabilized quite yet, Sharma said."The idea is we'll get to a place where it will be much more like the flu vaccines where people may be on a regular schedule, getting an updated vaccine," she said.As for the best time to get another COVID shot, the department suggests waiting six months after your last dose since protection against infection does wane over time — though scientists say protection against serious illness is longer-lasting.Dr. Supriya Sharma, chief medical adviser at Health Canada, explains the newly approved COVID-19 shot.-Extra caution for vulnerable, essential workersOn Tuesday, Canada's national vaccine advisory body also reaffirmed its advice from earlier this summer, stressing that vaccination is particularly important for anyone at an increased risk of severe disease, including seniors age 65 and up, residents of congregate living settings such as long-term care facilities, pregnant individuals and anyone with underlying medical conditions who may heightened their risk. The guidance also applies to people who provide essential community services and members of racialized, First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities.Braced for an increase in COVID cases, Health Canada considers 3 new vaccines-Health Canada is still reviewing submissions on a "priority basis" for updated shots from other drugmakers as well, including Pfizer-BioNTech's Omicron XBB.1.5 vaccine for Canadians age six months and up and Novavax's shot for people age 12 and up."We will have enough supply of the updated COVID-19 vaccines to support immunization programs across Canada," said Canada's chief public health officer, Dr. Theresa Tam, at the federal briefing.Several federal health officials wore masks at their Tuesday technical briefing on updated COVID-19 vaccines. Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam explains why they've brought them back.Officials expect 'improved immune response' Dr. Lynora Saxinger, an infectious diseases specialist at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, said even if Canadians have "booster fatigue," these types of updated vaccines will be important shots to get this fall."The original strain now is kind of irrelevant to what's circulating," she said. "But the XBB booster covers most of the important mutations that we're seeing in the alphabet soup of variants that everyone's watching right now."So it stands to provide significantly increased protection against infection again."Early signs suggest fall COVID-19 wave starting in Canada — before updated boosters are available-Tam said preliminary clinical data has shown promising immune responses from the XBB.1.5 vaccine against various Omicron sublineages, including EG.5 and BA.2.86.She said there are no signals of increased disease severity from these subvariants. "This improved immune response is expected to better protect against the strains that are circulating in our communities."Despite an expected fall wave of COVID-19, health experts recommend most people wait for the next, updated vaccine — still a few weeks away — to get a booster for the most protection.Case, hospitalizations climbing-The push for new COVID shots comes amid a rise in cases heading into the fall, as country-wide hospitalizations are also climbing, hitting more than 2,000 by early September — though the number remains far lower than the highest peaks of the pandemic.Physicians are hopeful that a fall booster campaign could further suppress virus transmission during what's expected to be another busy respiratory virus season.Updated COVID-19 vaccines recommended for fall boosters, Canada's vaccine advisers say-"You have this kind of undulating risk going on depending when you were last infected or boosted," said Saxinger. "This will provide a real jump — hopefully — on the immunity against infection as well."And that could actually make a bigger difference for reducing transmission and kind of flattening the curve for the fall."Tam stressed that it's difficult to predict what will happen this fall and winter regarding the co-circulation of multiple viruses, including influenza and RSV, given that it is still early in the season. "But the good news is we can get prepared and protect ourselves in case simultaneous surges of respiratory viruses occur," she said.Canadians can safely get both their flu and COVID shots during the same appointment, Tam said.U.S. has approved both Moderna, Pfizer shots-The first COVID vaccines in 2020 were monovalent, or single-target vaccines, aimed at the original strain of the virus. They were followed by bivalent COVID vaccine booster shots that targeted both the original virus and an Omicron strains. The latest shots, again, are monovalent.Canada's approval of the Moderna shot follows the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorizing updated COVID vaccines from both Pfizer and Moderna the day before, with an advisory panel also set to recommend today whether the shots should be given broadly, or just to specific at-risk populations. U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director Mandy Cohen will make the final decision some time after the committee's vote and may or may not follow the panel's advice.Much like here in Canada, COVID infections and hospitalizations have been rising in the United States, Europe and Asia but remain well below previous peaks, in part thanks to widespread global immunity developed through several years of prior infections and vaccinations.

Digital Travel Credentials coming to Canada-Netherlands pilot, future US scanners-Idemia’s next biometric CAT devices to support DTCs
Sep 11, 2023, 6:08 pm EDT-| Chris Burt

Digital travel credential pilots are set to expand beyond Europe, and forthcoming biometric scanners from Idemia will support such digital credentials, attendees heard during a recent Future Travel Experience webinar.FTE’s “The Seamless Trusted Traveler Experience: What’s Next?” webinar brought together stakeholders from the U.S. government, airlines and Idemia to review the changes reducing ID document checks in the airport.Neal Latta of the U.S. Transportation Security Administration reviewed the TSA PreCheck program, noting that 99 percent of travelers going through Precheck are processed in 10 minutes or less. TSA PreCheck has added about 4 million applicants this year, and between TSA’s program, Customs and Border Protection’s Trusted Travelers and other low-risk populations like DoD employees, 34 million people can use the service.Greg Forbes of Delta Air Lines discussed consumer sentiment, pointing out that three-quarters of travelers prefer to use face biometrics over travel documents, and users of digital ID give airport processes a 30 point higher Net Promotor Score. Delta’s biometric Touchless PreCheck experience is about to expand to major airports in New York (JFK and La Guardia) and LA (LAX).“We’ll go as fast as TSA wants to go,” he says of the airline’s biometrics expansion plans. He also noted during the question and answer portion of the webinar that passengers appear to be more comfortable at this point with biometrics as a replacement for checks of ID documents than boarding pass checks.Getting higher volumes of passengers through checkpoints quickly without adding the space for more lines remains a primary concern. Biometrics can slash bag drop times from 4 minutes to 30 seconds, according to Forbes.Next steps for DTC pilot, CAT II scanners.Nick van Straten of KLM described the Digital Travel Credential Type 1 pilot, which Idemia is a technology supplier for. Passengers create a DTC by scanning their passport with a smartphone app, provided by Idemia, to enroll their biometrics. The pilot is being carried out on flights between Canada and the Netherlands, and represents the resumption of a pilot that was called off due to the pandemic.Lisa Sullivan of Idemia noted that the rough equivalent of the DTC in the U.S. is the mobile driver’s license being launched by some states. The next iteration of the CAT II devices supplied to TSA by Idemia will be able to accept digital travel credentials, she says. At other touchpoints, 1:N facial recognition can be used to make passenger experiences consistent. One of Idemia’s main goal for biometric enrollment to TSA PreCheck is to ensure a variety of ways for consumers to join, Sullivan says.

US govt monitors trusted travelers even as it removes hurdles with biometric programs-Sep 11, 2023, 5:38 pm EDT    | Jim Nash

Trust by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency only goes so far, and the limit is surprising to some residents who travel internationally. On the same day that the CBP announced a significant upgrade in convenience for its Global Entry program in a Midwest airport, news site Newsweek was pointing out the extent of monitoring that comes with membership. The government’s Global Entry program provides pre-approved members expedited security clearance on return travel to the United States. Applicants pay $100 to be vetted and biometrically scanned. Those deemed low risk can become members. Some members, perhaps most, assume that the investigation into their lives ends after approval, but Newsweek has found that it does not.In fact, some level of scrutiny of Global Entry members continues every 24 hours, according to Newsweek’s reporting, regardless if they are flying or even booked on a flight. It makes sense to do it because people’s behaviors and associations can change daily. But as with other public and private biometric products and programs, CBP officials don’t emphasize this point with people. Newsweek says details are in the program’s fine print.Subsequent monitoring includes database searches on a member’s name. The government is looking for ongoing investigations by any level of government law enforcement.A report by the Department of Homeland Security states that about 12,000 memberships (out of 7.4 million) were revoked “through” fiscal 2022. It is not clear if that was a cumulative number for the program or just for that period. The CBP is more demonstrative with expansions and upgrades of biometric ID programs for travelers.Last week, the agency said upgraded Global Entry capabilities were part of the opening of Kansas City International Airport’s new terminal.Members using that terminal do not need paper ticket receipts. Biometrics and “mobile solutions” make tickets moot, according to a statement issued by LaFonda D. Sutton-Burke, director of field operations in Chicago. Her statement included an admission that Global Entry members can still be randomly sidelined while traveling into the U.S.Along with the many other roles a trusted traveler program has, this one is an experiment to see if there is a level of convenience offered by digital identity and biometric verification that can assuage travelers’ concern about their privacy.

With COVID cases on the rise, Magen David Adom asks public to donate plasma-Donors must meet certain criteria, including COVID illness and recovery within the last several months, so that antibodies will be relevant for newer variants of the virus-By Renee Ghert-Zand 12 September 2023, 12:08 pm 2

As COVID cases rise again and new variants emerge, Magen David Adom’s national blood bank service is calling on generally healthy people who have been ill with COVID in the last three to four months to donate plasma. The blood component is needed for antibody treatment for patients who contract the virus and become seriously ill or are in danger of deteriorating because of a suppressed immune system.Only people who confirmed they had COVID by doing a home test may donate. Donation is also restricted to men and women who have never been pregnant, as certain antibodies that often develop in pregnancy can be detrimental to the recipient of a plasma transfusion. In addition, MDA is asking only for plasma donors who have fully recovered from COVID at least two weeks before their donation.“We need to ramp up our supply of plasma so that we have enough for every COVID patient who needs it,” said Prof. Eilat Shinar, head of MDA Blood Services.MDA has an inventory of antibodies from plasma donations that are effective against earlier manifestations of the virus, including the original SARS-CoV-2, and the Delta and the original Omicron variants. It now needs a supply of antibodies for the newer variants that emerged and became predominant over the summer, such as XBB, EG.5 (Eris), and BA.2.86 (Pirola).Plasma is the largest component of blood, making up around 55 percent of its content. When separated from the rest of the blood, plasma is a light yellow liquid. It carries water, salts, and enzymes to where they are needed around the body. It also contains antibodies, coagulation factors, and albumin proteins.MDA collects and processes 40,000-50,000 units of plasma per year for use in patients with severe bleeding. This plasma is separated out of whole blood donations and can be frozen for up to one year.Blood plasma is processed by Magen David Adom staff. (Courtesy of Magen David Adom)In contrast, the plasma required for COVID patients is extracted from patients hooked up to a machine that performs plasmapheresis, a process in which blood is removed from the body, the plasma is separated out and the blood cells are returned to the donor — all in one sitting.“Once the donor is hooked up to the machine, the process takes about half an hour to extract three units (about 600 milliliters) of plasma,” Shinar said. The COVID antibodies in the plasma are then separated out, concentrated,  and stored in small bottles to be administered to patients who need them.“This is a proven treatment in other diseases, as well. Ready-to-use natural antibodies extracted from plasma donation have been used in treating Ebola, for example,” Shinar said. She further explained that early in the COVID pandemic in April 2020, Israeli health authorities devised a protocol whereby two treatments of COVID antibodies from plasma donations were administered to patients on two consecutive days.“The idea was to give this to [hospitalized] patients were were showing a deterioration in their condition but were not yet intubated and on artificial ventilators — in other words, before it was too late,” Shinar said. She cited a study of 3,000 such Israelis that showed that 49% of those given the antibodies did better than those who did not.“Another study on 33,000 people with COVID done at the Mayo Clinic showed a similar result,” Shinar added. With hospitals calling MDA asking for updated COVID antibody supplies, it became clear that the blood services needed somewhere between 60 to 100 units of plasma total from eligible donors with various blood types to be in a good position as the expected “flurona” (combined flu and COVID) season begins. At this point, the Health Ministry has not resumed tracking the extent of COVID in the community or mandating testing or isolating. Hospitals are also not performing PCR testing on all hospitalized patients, and plasma is not being tested by health authorities for exactly which antibodies it contains. When asked whether the plasma donations will be effective if currently there is no matching of patients to donor antibodies in terms of virus variant, Shinar said that donating is still very important because there is at least a 50% chance that the antibodies will help in curing the patient.“It’s better than not trying,” she said. The plasma, which is processed in MDA’s newly minted Marcus National Blood Services Center in Ramle, can be donated at MDA locations in Jerusalem, Haifa, Beersheba, and elsewhere.Prospective donors should contact MDA blood services by phone to make an appointment.

More questions arise as investigation into Calgary daycare E. coli outbreak continues-E. coli outbreak, Calgary,The Canadian Press
Published Wednesday, September 13, 2023 6:08AM EDT

A report detailing critical health violations at a central kitchen serving Calgary daycares affected by an E. coli outbreak is raising even more questions about how this could have happened.Among the problems detailed in the report released Tuesday were improper sanitation and what it called "significant evidence of a pest infestation," with an inspector finding two live cockroaches and at least 20 dead ones on sticky pads.An inspection of the food facility took place one day after an E. coli outbreak at 11 daycares in Calgary was declared on Sept. 4.Dr. Mark Joffe, Alberta's chief medical officer of health, has called the outbreak extraordinary both in terms of the numbers and severity, with 264 lab-confirmed cases of the bacterial infection and 25 patients in hospital.Previous inspections of the central kitchen had also found violations, information Joffe says is part of the ongoing investigation.Opposition NDP Leader Rachel Notley says the outbreak was avoidable and is calling for an inquiry to determine whether systemic problems with the public health system played a role. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Sept. 13, 2023.

Netanyahu concedes armored vehicles given to PA-Fuming at reported weapons transfer to PA, far-right ministers threaten Netanyahu
Smotrich calls emergency meeting of Religious Zionism party; Ben Gvir calls on PM to publicly disavow reports or ‘face consequences’; defense minister says no arms were transferred-By ToI Staff Today, 11:57 am 2

Far-right ministers Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben Gvir railed angrily at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday over reports that the government approved the transfer of a shipment of armored vehicles and weapons from the United States to the Palestinian Authority. Both ministers claimed that the move was made without their knowledge and accused Netanyahu of plotting to lay the foundations for an alternative government with National Unity party leader Benny Gantz. In the wake of their criticism, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Netanyahu denied that reports of an arms transfer were true. However, Netanyahu conceded the vehicles were delivered.Citing informed Palestinian sources, the Jerusalem-based Palestinian daily Al Quds said Monday that the shipment was approved by Israel and facilitated by Jordan and will be used by several branches of the PA security forces in regaining control over West Bank areas that have become hotbeds of terror activity. The report was picked up Wednesday by Army Radio, sparking a furious response from Smotrich and Ben Gvir.A statement from Smotrich’s office said that the finance minister “was unaware of such a move and was burning with anger.”“The assessment of those around Smotrich is that the transfer of arms to the PA and the [judicial overhaul compromise] steps at the President’s Residence were a payment to Benny Gantz to establish a left-wing government with him that would seek to revive the Oslo Accords,” the statement said, adding that Smotrich was calling an emergency meeting of his faction.National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir was more direct.“Mr. Prime Minister, if you don’t state in your own voice that the reports about the transfer of arms to the terrorists of the Palestinian Authority are false, there will be consequences,” he said. “If your intention is to try and build an Oslo II government, please inform your ministers and the public so that we can act accordingly.”Ben Gvir had already scheduled a meeting of his Otzma Yehudit faction for Wednesday to discuss his anger with Netanyahu, who has held up his efforts to harshen conditions for Palestinian security prisoners. While Netanyahu did not immediately comment on the weapons transfer issue, Gallant denied that arms had been sent to the PA.“Contrary to various false reports, there have been no transfers of arms or deadly weapons to the Palestinian Authority since Defense Minister Gallant took office,” a ministry statement said. “Any attempt to portray things differently is a lie.”The Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), the Defense Ministry body responsible for Palestinian civil affairs, also issued a denial.“There is no truth to the various reports on the issue. We clarify that no guns were transferred to the Palestinian Authority in the last year,” COGAT said.Netanyahu later issued his own denial but conceded the armored vehicles were handed over.“There is no limit to the fake news, so these are the facts,” Netanyahu said. “Since this government was formed we have not given a single weapon to the Palestinian Authority.”Netanyahu said the government had merely complied with a decision taken in January 2022 by the previous government, when Gantz was defense minister, to allow several armored vehicles to be sent to the PA to replace older ones.“That’s what we did, not APCs, not tanks, not Kalachnikovs, nothing,” he said. “Sometimes even the fake news isn’t bullet proof and it’s good that we are bursting the lies.”The Haaretz daily reported that some 10 vehicles were sent to the PA.The US State Department issued the following statement after the Monday report: “As a general matter we do not comment on specific transfers. That said, we can say that US security assistance to the Palestinian Authority does not include provision of weapons or ammunition to the PA security forces.“We reiterate our continued commitment to cooperating with the Palestinian Authority, in coordination with the Government of Israel, to improve the security situation in the West Bank,” the statement continued. “We remain deeply concerned by the rising levels of violence in the West Bank over the past year and reiterate our view that Palestinians and Israelis alike deserve to enjoy equal measures of freedom, prosperity, and security.“We continue to urge Israel and the Palestinian security forces to work together to improve the situation in the West Bank,” the State Department said. While hard-right elements of the government have long criticized the transfer of weapons to the PA, Netanyahu and Israel’s security establishment maintain a different approach, viewing PA President Mahmoud Abbas and his security forces as an important ally in combating terror in the West Bank. However, as the PA faces a legitimacy crisis over its failure to deliver Palestinian statehood or even hold elections, its popularity has waned significantly, particularly in the northern West Bank where rivals have taken up weapons and challenged its authority.Armed groups in Jenin and Nablus have carried out regular shooting attacks against Israeli soldiers and civilians. Israel says the weakening of the PA has left it with no choice but to send its own soldiers into such cities in the northern West Bank to arrest those responsible for attacks and confiscate the growing amounts of weapons that are being stockpiled there. The PA argues that such raids hamper its legitimacy further, and insists that Israel let it deal with the problem on its own. After a two-day IDF operation in Jenin in July, Israel appeared to acquiesce, reducing the frequency of such raids in order to give the PA space to operate.Jacob Magid contributed to this report.

North Korea’s Kim views launchpads with Putin, vows support for Russia’s ‘just fight’Leaders of pariah nations speak for 4-5 hours at summit that US has warned could lead to an ammunition deal for Moscow’s Ukraine invasion, as Pyongyang seeks help with satellites-By KIM TONG-HYUNG and Dasha Litvinova Today, 1:31 pm 0

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un vowed support for Russia’s “just fight” during a summit with President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday that the US warned could lead to a deal to supply ammunition for Moscow’s war in Ukraine. After touring launch pads with Putin at a remote space base in Russia’s Far East, Kim expressed “full and unconditional support” and said Pyongyang will always stand with Moscow on the “anti-imperialist” front. The leaders met at the Vostochny Cosmodrome for a summit that underscores how their interests are aligning in the face of their countries’ separate, intensifying confrontations with the United States. The talks lasted four to five hours, after which Kim left, Russia’s state news agency RIA Novosti reported.North Korea may have tens of millions of aging artillery shells and rockets based on Soviet designs that could give a huge boost to the Russian army in Ukraine, analysts say.The decision to meet at Cosmodrome, Russia’s most important launch center on its own soil, suggests that Kim is seeking Russian help developing military reconnaissance satellites, which he has described as crucial to enhance the threat of his nuclear-capable missiles. In recent months, North Korea has repeatedly failed to put its first military spy satellite into orbit. But either buying arms from or providing rocket technology to North Korea would violate international sanctions that Russia has supported in the past.Putin welcomed Kim’s limousine, brought from Pyongyang in the North Korean leader’s special armored train, at the entrance to the launch facility with a handshake that lasted around 40 seconds. In his opening remarks, Putin welcomed Kim to Russia and said he was glad to see him, saying the talks would cover economic cooperation, humanitarian issues and the “situation in the region.”Kim, in turn, expressed support for Moscow’s efforts to defend its interests, in an apparent reference to the war in Ukraine. “Russia is currently engaged in a just fight against hegemonic forces to defend its sovereign rights, security and interests,” the North Korean leader said. “I take this opportunity to affirm that we will always stand with Russia on the anti-imperialist front and the front of independence.”The two men began their meeting with a tour of a Soyuz-2 space rocket launch facility, at which Kim peppered a Russian space official with questions about the rockets.Kim and Putin then met together with their delegations and later one-on-one, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov. After the talks, the Russian president threw an official lunch for Kim, Russian state media reported. The meeting came hours after North Korea fired two ballistic missiles toward the sea, extending a highly provocative run in North Korean weapons testing since the start of 2022, as Kim used the distraction caused by Putin’s war on Ukraine to accelerate his weapons development.South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff didn’t immediately say how far the North Korean missiles flew. Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said the missiles landed in the waters outside of the country’s exclusive economic zones and there were no reports of damages to vessels or aircraft.Official photos showed that Kim was accompanied by Pak Thae Song, chairman of North Korea’s space science and technology committee, and navy Adm. Kim Myong Sik, who are linked with North Korean efforts to acquire spy satellites and nuclear-capable ballistic missile submarines, according to South Korea’s Unification Ministry.Asked whether Russia will help North Korea build satellites, Putin was quoted by Russian state media as saying “that’s why we have come here. The DPRK leader shows keen interest in rocket technology. They’re trying to develop space, too,” using the abbreviation for North Korea’s formal name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Asked about military cooperation, Putin said “we will talk about all issues without a rush. There is time.”Kim also brought Jo Chun Ryong, a ruling party official in charge of munitions policies, who joined him on recent tours of factories producing artillery shells and missile, according to South Korea.Despite the recent frequency of North Korean missile firings, Wednesday’s launches on the eve of the summit came as a surprise. South Korea’s Unification Ministry, which handles inter-Korean affairs, said it was the first time the North launched a missile while Kim was traveling overseas.Kim could have ordered the launches to make a point to Putin about North Korea’s defense posture and show that he remains in close control of the country’s military activities even while abroad, said Moon Seong Mook, an analyst with the Seoul-based Korea Research Institute for National Strategy.Moon, a retired South Korean brigadier general who participated in past inter-Korean military talks, said the North with the launches could have also intended to express its anger toward the United States, after State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said in a press briefing that Putin was meeting “an international pariah to ask for assistance in a war.”The United States has accused North Korea of providing Russia with arms, including selling artillery shells to the Russian mercenary group Wagner. Both Russian and North Korean officials denied such claims.Speculation about military cooperation grew after Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu visited North Korea in July. Kim subsequently toured his weapons factories, which experts said had the dual goal of encouraging the modernization of North Korean weaponry and examining artillery and other supplies that could be exported to Russia.

Visiting US official discusses Saudi deal with Bennett, Gantz-Settling on UN sidelines meeting, US said to tell PM he’ll get Oval Office follow-up
After sufficing with lower-profile sit-down next week, US officials assure Netanyahu he’ll meet Biden at White House later this year, though they want to see how overhaul unfolds-By ToI Staff-SEP 13,23--Today, 4:21 am 4

US officials reportedly told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office that the premier will be invited to meet US President Joe Biden at the White House later this year, after Washington decided to suffice with a meeting between the two leaders on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly next week.A second meeting within months could help blunt the blow for Netanyahu, who has been hoping for a higher-profile Oval Office sit-down with the president when he is in town to address the General Assembly next Friday. Netanyahu waited over seven months before Biden agreed to a meeting, amid Washington’s frustration over the hardline Israeli government’s judicial overhaul and policies toward the Palestinians.Prime ministers, including Netanyahu in previous terms, visited the White House much earlier on in their tenures.A senior US official told the Axios news site Tuesday that the White House wants to see how things unfold with the judicial overhaul before extending an invitation for a follow-up meeting between Netanyahu and Biden in the Oval Office. The High Court of Justice on Tuesday held an unprecedented 13-hour hearing to discuss the constitutionality of the first piece of overhaul legislation passed by Netanyahu’s coalition in July, but is not expected to issue a decision for weeks, if not months. But with Netanyahu and many in his coalition refusing to state that they’ll abide by the court if the latter chooses to strike down the law, the White House was apparently uncomfortable with the optics of an Oval Office meeting. There still was a long back-and-forth in the White House over where to hold the sit-down, with some Biden aides pushing for it to be held in the Oval Office. But opponents of the higher-level setting noted that it could harm Biden politically among Democrats, a senior US official told Axios.A second US official was quoted as saying that an Oval Office meeting would offer a false impression of business as usual when the president is still unhappy with Netanyahu’s policies, particularly regarding the overhaul.A third US official said there were concerns among Biden aides that thousands of Israelis and American Jews would protest outside the White House, which would be a bad look for the president, as his aides have repeatedly praised the anti-overhaul activists.Protests are still expected outside the UN General Assembly throughout Netanyahu’s time in New York next week. The exact date of the Biden-Netanyahu meeting in New York has not yet been announced. The US officials said, though, that the New York meeting will still give Biden the opportunity to discuss with Netanyahu how the prime minister intends to move forward with the overhaul as well as the US efforts to broker a normalization deal between Israel and Saudi Arabia.Relatedly, Channel 12 reported on Tuesday that US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Barbara Leaf held undisclosed meetings with former prime minister Naftali Bennett and opposition party leader Benny Gantz in recent days to discuss the normalization effort.Sources familiar with the talks told Channel 12 that the US was trying to gauge Israel’s redlines, beyond what has been conveyed by the Netanyahu government.US officials have in recent weeks also met with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Opposition Leader Yair Lapid.Lapid told the Americans he was vehemently opposed to allowing Saudi Arabia to carry out any nuclear enrichment on its soil. The report said Gantz and Bennett were believed to have also highlighted the dangers of a regional nuclear race if the Saudis were to obtain their own nuclear program.Netanyahu will land in the US on Monday, first meeting with tech executives in San Francisco before arriving in New York on Tuesday and heading back to Israel on Saturday night.

At least 5,000 feared dead, many more missing in massive Libya floods-Rescuers have trouble reaching worst-hit Derna in the eastern part of the war-divided country, where heavy rains collapsed dams around the city, washing away entire neighborhoods-By Samy Magdy-SEP 13,23-Today

CAIRO (AP) — Emergency workers uncovered more than 2,000 bodies in the wreckage of Libya’s eastern city of Derna as of Wednesday, and it was feared the toll could surpass 5,000 after floodwaters smashed through dams and washed away entire neighborhoods of the city. The startling death and devastation wreaked by Mediterranean storm Daniel pointed to the storm’s intensity, but also the vulnerability of a nation torn apart by chaos for more than a decade. The country is divided by rival governments, one in the east, the other in the west, and the result has been neglect of infrastructure in many areas.Outside help was only just starting to reach Derna on Tuesday, more than 36 hours after the disaster struck. The floods damaged or destroyed many access roads to the coastal city of some 89,000.More than 2,000 corpses were collected as of Wednesday morning and over half of them had been buried in mass graves in Derna, said eastern Libya’s health minister, Othman Abduljaleel. Rescue teams were working day and night to recover many other bodies scattered in the streets and under the rubble in the city. Some bodies were retrieved from the sea.At least one official put the death toll at more than 5,000. The state-run news agency quoted Mohammed Abu-Lamousha, a spokesman for the east Libya interior ministry, as saying that more than 5,300 people had died in Derna alone. Derna’s ambulance authority said earlier Tuesday that 2,300 had died. But the toll is likely to be higher, said Tamer Ramadan, Libya envoy for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. He told a UN briefing in Geneva via videoconference from Tunisia that at least 10,000 people were still missing. He said later Tuesday that more than 40,000 people have been displaced. The situation in Libya is “as devastating as the situation in Morocco,” Ramadan said, referring to the deadly earthquake that hit near the city of Marrakesh on Friday night.UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres conveyed his solidarity with the Libyan people and said the United Nations “is working with local, national and international partners to get urgently needed humanitarian assistance to those in affected areas,” UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said. The destruction came to Derna and other parts of eastern Libya on Sunday night. As the storm pounded the coast, Derna residents said they heard loud explosions and realized that dams outside the city had collapsed. Flash floods were unleashed down Wadi Derna, a river running from the mountains through the city and into the sea.The wall of water “erased everything in its way,” said one resident, Ahmed Abdalla.Videos posted online by residents showed large swaths of mud and wreckage where the raging waters had swept away neighborhoods on both banks of the river. Multi-story apartment buildings that once were well back from the river had facades ripped away and concrete floors collapsed. Cars lifted by the flood were left dumped on top of each other.Emergency workers uncovered more than 1,500 bodies in the flood wreckage of Libya’s eastern city of Derna, and it is feared the toll could spiral with 10,000 people reported still missing. pic.twitter.com/8cDckbHVTH — The Associated Press (@AP) September 12, 2023-Libya’s National Meteorological Center said Tuesday it issued early warnings for Storm Daniel, an “extreme weather event,” 72 hours before its occurrence, and notified all governmental authorities by e-mails and through media … “urging them to take preventive measures.” It said that Bayda recorded a record 414.1 millimeters (16.3 inches) of rain from Sunday to Monday. On Tuesday, local emergency responders, including troops, government workers, volunteers and residents dug through rubble looking for the dead. They also used inflatable boats to retrieve bodies from the water. Many bodies were believed trapped under rubble or had been washed out into the Mediterranean Sea, said eastern Libya’s health minister, Othman Abduljaleel.“We were stunned by the amount of destruction … the tragedy is very significant, and beyond the capacity of Derna and the government,” Abduljaleel told The Associated Press on the phone from Derna.Red Crescent teams from other parts of Libya also arrived in Derna on Tuesday morning but extra excavators and other equipment had yet to get there.Flooding often happens in Libya during the rainy season, but rarely with this much destruction. A key question was how the rains were able to burst through two dams outside Derna – whether because of poor maintenance or sheer volume of rain.Karsten Haustein, a climate scientist and meteorologist at Leipzig University, said in a statement that Daniel dumped 440 millimeters (15.7 inches) of rain on eastern Libya in a short time.“The infrastructure could probably not cope, leading to the collapse of the dam,” he said, adding that human-induced rises in water surface temperatures likely added to the storm’s intensity.
Local authorities have neglected Derna for years. “Even the maintenance aspect was simply absent. Everything kept being delayed,” said Jalel Harchaoui, an associate fellow specializing in Libya at the London-based Royal United Services Institute for Defense and Security Studies.Factionalism also comes into play. Derna was for several years controlled by Islamic militant groups. Military commander Khalifa Hifter, the strongman of the east Libya government, captured the city in 2019 only after months of tough urban fighting. The eastern government has been suspicious of the city ever since and has sought to sideline its residents from any decision-making, said Harchaoui. “This mistrust might prove calamitous during the upcoming post-disaster period,” he said.Hifter’s eastern government based in the city of Benghazi is locked in a bitter rivalry with the western government in the capital of Tripoli. Each is backed by powerful militias and by foreign powers. Hifter is also backed by Egypt, Russia, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, while the west Libya administration is backed by Turkey, Qatar and Italy.Still, the initial reaction to the disaster brought some crossing of the divide. The Tripoli-based government of western Libya sent a plane with 14 tons of medical supplies and health workers to Benghazi. It also said it had allocated the equivalent of $412 million for reconstruction in Derna and other eastern towns. Airplanes arrived Tuesday in Benghazi carrying humanitarian aid and rescue teams from Egypt, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates. Egypt’s military chief of staff met with Hifter to coordinate aid. Germany, France and Italy said they also were sending rescue personnel and aid.It was not clear how quickly the aid could be moved to Derna, 250 kilometers (150 miles) east of Benghazi, given conditions on the ground. Ahmed Amdourd, a Derna municipal official, called for a sea corridor to deliver aid and equipment.US President Joe Biden said in a statement Tuesday that the United States is sending emergency funds to relief organizations and coordinating with the Libyan authorities and the UN to provide additional support.“Jill and I send our deepest condolences to all the families who have lost loved ones in the devastating floods in Libya,” he said. The storm hit other areas in eastern Libya, including the town of Bayda, where about 50 people were reported dead. The Medical Center of Bayda, the main hospital, was flooded and patients had to be evacuated, according to footage shared by the center on Facebook.Other towns that suffered included Susa, Marj and Shahatt, according to the government. Hundreds of families were displaced and took shelter in schools and other government buildings in Benghazi and elsewhere in eastern Libya.Northeast Libya is one of the country’s most fertile and green regions. The Jabal al-Akhdar area — where Bayda, Marj and Shahatt are located — has one of the country’s highest average annual rainfalls, according to the World Bank.

Israel hit by tail end of Storm Daniel after it killed at least 2,000 in Libya-Warnings of potential flash flooding in desert areas as ‘medicane’ weather system brings heavy rain across the country-By ToI Staff and Agencies Today, 9:15 am

There was heavy rain across the country Wednesday morning as Israel was lashed by the remnants of Storm Daniel, which wreaked deadly havoc in Libya and Greece earlier in the week. While precipitation or flooding was not expected in Israel at the level seen in other countries, there were warnings of potential flash floods in desert areas. There were reports of a number of sinkholes in the center of the country, but no immediate reports of injuries.Heavy rain is unusual for Israel in September. The storm is expected to pass by Thursday.Daniel formed as a low-pressure weather system more than a week ago and then became blocked by a high-pressure system, dumping extreme amounts of rain on Greece and surrounding areas before inundating Libya. There, floodwaters smashed through dams and washed away entire neighborhoods of the eastern city of Derna. Emergency workers uncovered more than 2,000 bodies in the wreckage of Derna by Wednesday, and it was feared the toll could surpass 5,000.Storm Daniel made landfall in Libya on Sunday after earlier lashing Bulgaria, Turkey and Greece, where it killed at least 18 people. The storm is the latest extreme weather event to carry some of the hallmarks of climate change, scientists say.Daniel — dubbed a “medicane” for its Mediterranean location and hurricane-like characteristics – drew enormous energy from extremely warm seawater. And a warmer atmosphere holds more water vapor that can fall as rain, experts said. It’s difficult to attribute a single weather event to climate change, “but we know there are factors that could be at play” with storms like Daniel that make it more likely, said Kristen Corbosiero, an atmospheric scientist at the University at Albany.Medicanes form once or twice a year in the Mediterranean, and are most common from September to January. They’re not generally true hurricanes, but can reach hurricane strength on rare occasions, said Simon Mason, chief climate scientist at the Columbia Climate School’s International Research Institute for Climate and Society.Combined with other factors such as urbanization and land-use planning, these more intense rainfall events contribute to flooding.

NASA says hint of oceans, potential life discovered on distant world-Molecule only produced on Earth by life may be present on exoplanet 120 light years away, along with molecules suggesting presence of water-By Michael Horovitz 12 September 2023, 10:36 pm 1

The NASA space agency on Monday announced the potential discovery of a water ocean surface on a planet outside the solar system, as well as a certain molecule that may hint at the existence of life.Data collected by the agency’s James Webb Telescope on K2-18 b, a planet orbiting a dwarf star 120 light years from Earth in the Leo constellation, suggested evidence of methane, carbon, and a shortage of ammonia, indicating it is a Hycean exoplanet — a planet with a hydrogen atmosphere and covered in water.Furthermore, the observations detected the possibility of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) on the planet, a chemical that is only produced by living organisms on Earth — mainly phytoplankton.“Our findings underscore the importance of considering diverse habitable environments in the search for life elsewhere,” said astronomer Nikku Madhusudhan of Cambridge University, who was a lead author on the research paper publishing the findings.“Traditionally, the search for life on exoplanets has focused primarily on smaller rocky planets, but the larger Hycean worlds are significantly more conducive to atmospheric observations,” he added.Madhusudhan said the findings are not conclusive and further research will be conducted to determine if DMS indeed exists on the distant planet, which is eight-and-a-half times larger than Earth.“Our ultimate goal is the identification of life on a habitable exoplanet, which would transform our understanding of our place in the universe,” he said. “Our findings are a promising step towards a deeper understanding of Hycean worlds in this quest.”The planet was originally discovered and studied in 2015 with data from the Hubble Space Telescope.NASA said that although K2-18 b exists in the so-called habitable zone — the appropriate distance from a sun that would allow life on a planet to bloom — they presume the world is similar to Neptune due to its size, with “a large mantle of high-pressure ice,” and “a thinner hydrogen-rich atmosphere and an ocean surface.”The Astrophysical Journal Letters accepted the Cambridge researchers’ paper.James Webb’s MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument) spectrograph camera will be used to further probe the world’s environment and potentially discover new findings, NASA said. The statement noted that the study of planets such as K2-18 b is challenging since they are blocked by the glare of nearby stars.“The team sidestepped this challenge by analyzing light from K2-18 b’s parent star as it passed through the exoplanet’s atmosphere. K2-18 b is a transiting exoplanet, meaning that we can detect a drop in brightness as it passes across the face of its host star,” NASA said.“This is how the exoplanet was first discovered in 2015 with NASA’s K2 mission. This means that during transits a tiny fraction of starlight will pass through the exoplanet’s atmosphere before reaching telescopes like Webb. The starlight’s passage through the exoplanet atmosphere leaves traces that astronomers can piece together to determine the gases of the exoplanet’s atmosphere,” the space agency added.NASA has hailed the potential discovery of water on exoplanets in the past. In 2022, the agency said it detected water vapor on HAT-P-11b, another Neptune-like planet 120 light years away, in the Cygnus constellation.
