thermonuclear bomb, also called hydrogen bomb, or H-bomb, weapon whose enormous explosive power results from an uncontrolled self-sustaining chain reaction in which isotopes of hydrogen combine under extremely high temperatures to form helium in a process known as nuclear fusion. The high temperatures that are required for the reaction are produced by the detonation of an atomic bomb.A thermonuclear bomb differs fundamentally from an atomic bomb in that it utilizes the energy released when two light atomic nuclei combine, or fuse, to form a heavier nucleus. An atomic bomb, by contrast, uses the energy released when a heavy atomic nucleus splits, or fissions, into two lighter nuclei. Under ordinary circumstances atomic nuclei carry positive electrical charges that act to strongly repel other nuclei and prevent them from getting close to one another. Only under temperatures of millions of degrees can the positively charged nuclei gain sufficient kinetic energy, or speed, to overcome their mutual electric repulsion and approach close enough to each other to combine under the attraction of the short-range nuclear force. The very light nuclei of hydrogen atoms are ideal candidates for this fusion process because they carry weak positive charges and thus have less resistance to overcome.nuclear weapon-The hydrogen nuclei that combine to form heavier helium nuclei must lose a small portion of their mass (about 0.63 percent) in order to “fit together” in a single larger atom. They lose this mass by converting it completely into energy, according to Albert Einstein’s famous formula: E = mc2. According to this formula, the amount of energy created is equal to the amount of mass that is converted multiplied by the speed of light squared. The energy thus produced forms the explosive power of a hydrogen bomb.Deuterium and tritium, which are isotopes of hydrogen, provide ideal interacting nuclei for the fusion process. Two atoms of deuterium, each with one proton and one neutron, or tritium, with one proton and two neutrons, combine during the fusion process to form a heavier helium nucleus, which has two protons and either one or two neutrons. In current thermonuclear bombs, lithium-6 deuteride is used as the fusion fuel; it is transformed to tritium early in the fusion process. In a thermonuclear bomb, the explosive process begins with the detonation of what is called the primary stage. This consists of a relatively small quantity of conventional explosives, the detonation of which brings together enough fissionable uranium to create a fission chain reaction, which in turn produces another explosion and a temperature of several million degrees. The force and heat of this explosion are reflected back by a surrounding container of uranium and are channeled toward the secondary stage, containing the lithium-6 deuteride. The tremendous heat initiates fusion, and the resulting explosion of the secondary stage blows the uranium container apart. The neutrons released by the fusion reaction cause the uranium container to fission, which often accounts for most of the energy released by the explosion and which also produces fallout (the deposition of radioactive materials from the atmosphere) in the process. (A neutron bomb is a thermonuclear device in which the uranium container is absent, thus producing much less blast but a lethal “enhanced radiation” of neutrons.) The entire series of explosions in a thermonuclear bomb takes a fraction of a second to occur.A thermonuclear explosion produces blast, light, heat, and varying amounts of fallout. The concussive force of the blast itself takes the form of a shock wave that radiates from the point of the explosion at supersonic speeds and that can completely destroy any building within a radius of several miles. The intense white light of the explosion can cause permanent blindness to people gazing at it from a distance of dozens of miles. The explosion’s intense light and heat set wood and other combustible materials afire at a range of many miles, creating huge fires that may coalesce into a firestorm. The radioactive fallout contaminates air, water, and soil and may continue years after the explosion; its distribution is virtually worldwide. Thermonuclear bombs can be hundreds or even thousands of times more powerful than atomic bombs. The explosive yield of atomic bombs is measured in kilotons, each unit of which equals the explosive force of 1,000 tons of TNT. The explosive power of hydrogen bombs, by contrast, is frequently expressed in megatons, each unit of which equals the explosive force of 1,000,000 tons of TNT. Hydrogen bombs of more than 50 megatons have been detonated, but the explosive power of the weapons mounted on strategic missiles usually ranges from 100 kilotons to 1.5 megatons. Thermonuclear bombs can be made small enough (a few feet long) to fit in the warheads of intercontinental ballistic missiles; these missiles can travel almost halfway across the globe in 20 or 25 minutes and have computerized guidance systems so accurate that they can land within a few hundred yards of a designated target.Edward Teller, Stanislaw M. Ulam, and other American scientists developed the first hydrogen bomb, which was tested at Enewetak atoll on November 1, 1952. The U.S.S.R. first tested a hydrogen bomb on August 12, 1953, followed by the United Kingdom in May 1957, China (1967), and France (1968). In 1998 India tested a “thermonuclear device,” which was believed to be a hydrogen bomb. During the late 1980s there were some 40,000 thermonuclear devices stored in the arsenals of the world’s nuclear-armed nations. This number declined during the 1990s. The massive destructive threat of these weapons has been a principal concern of the world’s populace and of its statesmen since the 1950s. Hamas commander says attacks are in defense of Al-Aqsa, claims 5,000 missiles fired-Muhammad Deif calls on Arabs in Israel and West Bank to join ‘Operation ‘Al-Aqsa Deluge’, as well as Iran-backed terror groups; ‘Today the people are regaining their revolution’By Gianluca Pacchiani Today, 11:22 am 0-OCT 7,23
The Hamas terror group in the Gaza Strip said Saturday that it had launched over 5,000 rockets at Israelis in a surprise attack that it called “Operation Al-Aqsa Deluge.”The terror group also breached the barrier surrounding Gaza, with dozens of gunmen infiltrating Israeli towns and communities in an unprecedented attack.“Today the people are regaining their revolution,” Hamas military commander Muhammad Deif said in the recorded message, as he called on Palestinians from East Jerusalem to northern Israel to join the fight and “expel the occupiers and demolish the walls.”“We must set the earth on fire under the feet of the occupiers,” he said, claiming that Hamas had fired over 5,000 rockets into Israel.Israel put the number at more than 2,200 rockets. In the 10-minute speech by the shadowy Deif, he claimed that the operation was launched in retaliation for Israel’s “desecration” of the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, and a follow-up of previous warnings by the group. He added that it was also in response to Israel killing and wounding hundreds of Palestinians this year, and said that Jerusalem had rejected offers for prisoner exchange deals. He also called on the “Islamic resistance in Lebanon, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon” — countries with terror movements that are militarily supported by Iran — to “merge their resistance with that of the Palestinians today” and “start marching towards Palestine now.”Hamas military commander Muhammad Deif (courtesy)-Saleh al-Arouri, deputy head of Hamas who is considered to be its leader in the West Bank, issued a statement along the same lines, calling on the Arab and Islamic nations to join “Operation Al-Aqsa Flood.”The head of the Hamas Political Bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, his deputy, Saleh Al-Arouri, and other members of the Hamas leadership "prostrate in gratitude" for the ongoing attacks against Israel. pic.twitter.com/ACuajF4PTf— Gianluca Pacchiani (@GLucaPacchiani) October 7, 2023-Another video circulating on social media shows Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh, Saleh al-Arouri, and other members of the group’s leadership praying while a TV next to them plays clips of the ongoing attacks. The Temple Mount site is considered the holiest in Judaism, as the location of two biblical temples, while the Al-Aqsa Mosque is the third-holiest shrine in Islam, making the area a major flashpoint in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Major conflicts and bouts of violence have broken out following events at the site, where Jews and other non-Muslims are permitted to visit during certain hours but may not pray there, under a status quo arrangement that has prevailed for decades. In recent years, Jewish religious nationalists, including members of the governing coalition, have increasingly visited the site and demanded equal prayer rights for Jews there, infuriating the Palestinians and Muslims around the world.Over the past few days, Hamas has issued repeated condemnations following visits by groups of Jews to the Temple Mount during the Jewish holiday of Sukkot.Palestinian groups from throughout the political spectrum have also rebuked restrictions imposed by the Israeli police on Muslim worshipers wishing to pray on the compound over the past week, after videos circulating on social media showed an altercation between Israeli officers and Muslims in the Old City near the entrance to the mosque. The Jordanian Foreign Ministry also published a formal letter of protest.Agencies contributed to this report.
A colossal failure’ as Gaza’s Hamas terrorists infiltrate, catch Israel unprepared-Says former Navy chief: ‘All of Israel is asking itself: Where is the IDF, where is the police, where is the security?’By David Horovitz Today, 10:28 am 0-OCT 7,23
Much of Israel was awakened on Saturday morning to scarcely conceivable scenes and sounds of rocket attacks, and parts of southern Israel to gunfire, with the accompanying unthinkable news that dozens of terrorists had infiltrated from Gaza.Precisely 50 years after the Yom Kippur War, Israel was under surprise attack — not by Arab armies, but by the Hamas terrorist group. As sirens wailed throughout southern and central Israel, and the thuds of rocket impacts and interceptions reverberated, television and social media platforms began broadcasting clips showing what ought to have been unimaginable — including armed terrorists in what appeared to be a convoy of seven or eight white pick-up trucks, four or five gunmen dismounting from one of them on the street of a southern Israeli city, and a handful of others seen running along the sidewalks, weapons drawn. As rocket and mortar attacks continued, the IDF confirmed what was unfolding: dozens of terrorists had infiltrated into Israel — some by land, some by air on hang-gliders, and, reportedly, some even by sea.Israel’s sophisticated border fencing along the Gaza border had been breached in several places, Army Radio reported.Clashes were ongoing in several residential areas in the south — with IDF special forces dashing to deploy in southern areas — and residents close to the Gaza border were ordered to stay inside their homes, doors locked.Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai spoke of 21 “active scenes” across southern Israel.Hamas terrorists seen clashing with Israeli forces in southern Israel. pic.twitter.com/uJWd07xpVO— Emanuel (Mannie) Fabian (@manniefabian) October 7, 2023-A woman in her 70s was reported killed in a rocket attack, with reports of further casualties following, including fatalities.Security forces were tackling several terrorists in the town of Sderot, a police spokesman said. “Dozens of terrorists” were in the city, Channel 12 news reported.Amid the limitations of military censorship, there was reported to be “considerable concern” regarding the possibility of soldiers and/or civilians being kidnapped and taken back to Gaza. The very mechanics of reporting what was unfolding were complicated by the endless alerts about ongoing rocket fire, with residents of dozens upon dozens of towns and other residential areas ordered into saferooms.A resident of a southern kibbutz, locked inside her home, called Army Radio to say that gunmen were roaming the kibbutz, and that its security squad was trying to track them down.Three hours after the first rockets were fired at around 6:30 a.m., Channel 12 TV showed what it said were ordinary Gazans crossing from the Strip into Israel, exploiting the breaches in the security fence.Muhammad Deif, the notorious commander of Hamas terrorist operations, declared the attack to be the start of the “great revolution” and was quoted by Hamas TV urging Israeli Arab citizens and those in neighboring states to join in the attack. Channel 12 news reported that calls were being issued in mosques in East Jerusalem to carry out attacks. As Israeli forces sought to find and confront the gunmen, the IDF formally declared a “readiness for war” — indicating preparations for a full-scale war in Gaza. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, promising victory and declaring that Hamas had made a “great mistake,” ordered a call-up of military reserves, its precise scope to be determined by the extent of the crisis.Even as Israel’s political chiefs began to convene in emergency consultations, with the full extent of the infiltration and its consequences still unfolding, Hebrew media began quoting unnamed officials castigating the political and military echelons for the fact that Israel, preoccupied with internal argument, had again been taken by surprise.“We’re in a war with Gaza, the likes of which we’ve not known before,” Danny Kushmaro, the Channel 12 TV news anchor said.“All of Israel is asking itself: Where is the IDF, where is the police, where is the security?” agreed Eli Maron, the former head of the Israeli Navy, alongside him in the studio. “It’s a colossal failure; the hierarchies have simply failed, with vast consequences.”Amos Yadlin, a former IDF intelligence chief, invoked echoes of the Yom Kippur War — another attack marked by “intelligence failure,” with the enemy initiating conflict.Still, he stressed, Israel needed to remain calm. The immediate priority, Yadlin said, was to track down and deal with all the terrorists inside Israel, and prevent the conflict spreading to other fronts, especially Hezbollah in the north.
Gaza terrorists launch surprise attack on Israel with rocket barrages and infiltrations-Rockets at Tel Aviv, Sde Boker, Dimona, Jerusalem; terrorists infiltrate Sderot; at least 5 killed, more than 100 wounded; IDF declares ‘state of war readiness,’ calls up reserves

Palestinian terrorists in the Gaza Strip launched massive rocket barrages at southern and central Israel on Saturday morning, combined with an assault by dozens of gunmen who infiltrated the border town of Sderot and other communities, clashing with Israel Defense Force troops. At least five people were killed and more than 100 wounded, and casualties were reported from Sderot. The unprecedented surprise attack by terrorists in the Gaza Strip started a few minutes before 7 a.m. with hundreds of rockets fired at Israel. It came a day after Israel and the Arab world marked the 50th anniversary of the surprise attack by Egypt and Syria that launched the Yom Kippur War.Defense Minister Yoav Gallant rushed to Tel Aviv to consult with security chiefs. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was also to take part. The IDF said it was moving to a “state of war readiness” and Gallant authorized a widespread call-up of reserves.Gallant also declared an emergency situation within a range of 80 kilometers from the Gaza Strip. The “special situation” allows the military’s Home Front Command to restrict gatherings and close off areas. The area includes the major cities Tel Aviv and Beersheba.“Hamas… which is behind this attack, will bear the results and responsibility for the events,” the IDF said.“Hamas carried out a combined operation that included firing rockets and a terrorist infiltration into the territory of the State of Israel,” the IDF said in a statement.“The IDF will protect the residents of the State of Israel.”Two hours after the first rockets, the IDF began launching strikes on Gaza. The Red Alert warning sirens were activated in Tel Aviv, some 70 kilometers from the Gaza Strip, as well as Sde Boker, Arad and Dimona in the south, also more than 70 kilometers away. Later rockets were fired toward Jerusalem.Explosions were heard by residents across these areas and direct hits on buildings were reported in Ashkelon, the Gederot region and Tel Aviv. The IDF confirmed that Palestinian terrorists from the Gaza Strip infiltrated into Israel, but did not provide further information.Footage has shown armed Palestinians driving trucks and opening fire in Sderot. Another clip purported to show a hand glider near the Gaza border.A number of casualties have been reported. It is unclear how many terrorists infiltrated into the country. The clashes are ongoing.Hamas terrorists seen clashing with Israeli forces in southern Israel. pic.twitter.com/uJWd07xpVO— Emanuel (Mannie) Fabian (@manniefabian) October 7, 2023-Unverified footage from the Gaza Strip purported to show Hamas terrorists with the body of an IDF soldier taken from Israel during the attack. The graphic videos show the body being taken out of a truck, as a crowd swarms around it, trampling the body and shouting “God is Great.” Another video appeared to show Palestinian terrorists dragging away a live Israeli soldier on a motorcycle. Other videos showed a crowd of Palestinian men dancing around and atop an Israeli tank that was on fire. The authenticity of the videos could not immediately be verified.A resident of Kibbutz Be’eri says that terrorists are on the streets of the small town near the Gaza border.Dvir Efrat told Channel 12 that she does not dare raise her voice above a whisper and that she is barricaded in her home with a knife.“I can hear gunfire,” she said. The Magen David Adom ambulance service said a woman in her sixties had been killed in the rocket attacks on southern and central Israel. The mayor of Kuseife, Abd al-Aziz Nassara, told the Kan public broadcaster that there are at least four dead and several more wounded as a result of a number of rocket impacts in the town.Kuseife, a Bedouin town in southern Israel, is located some 65 kilometers from the Gaza Strip.Hospitals reported that they were treating over 100 Israelis wounded in the strikes, some of them in a critical condition. The Israeli military called on residents of southern and central Israel to remain close to bomb shelters amid the massive barrage.“The public in the south and center of the country are urged to stay near protected areas and follow the instructions of the Home Front Command,” the IDF said in an announcement early Saturday.Rocket impact reported in Ashkelon. It is also the third-holiest for Muslims, who refer to it as the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound or the Noble Sanctuary.Provocations and violence at the site have frequently turned into wider conflagrations. The attacks from Gaza came after weeks of heightened tensions along Israel’s volatile border with Gaza, and deadly clashes in the West Bank. The Hamas terror group seized control of the territory in 2007. Israel and Hamas have fought four wars since then. There have also been numerous rounds of smaller fighting between Israel and Hamas and other smaller terror groups based in Gaza.Violence has surged across the West Bank over the past year and a half, with a rise in Palestinian shooting attacks against Israeli civilians and troops, near-nightly arrest raids by the military, and an uptick in revenge attacks by extremist Jewish settlers against Palestinians.Palestinian attacks in Israel and the West Bank since the beginning of the year have left 27 civilians and three soldiers dead, and several others seriously wounded.According to a tally by The Times of Israel, 194 West Bank and East Jerusalem Palestinians have been killed during the same period — the majority during clashes with security forces or while carrying out attacks, but some were uninvolved civilians and others were killed in unclear circumstances, including by armed Israeli settlers. The tensions have also spread to Gaza, where Hamas-linked activists held violent demonstrations along the Israeli border in recent weeks. Those demonstrations were halted in late September after international mediation.
