Spanish pol who on Oct. 7 said Palestinians have ‘right to resist’ made a minister-United Left’s Sira Rego named minister of children and youth, after accusing Jewish state of ‘exterminating a people for 75 years’ in response to Israeli criticism
By Gabe Friedman Today, 4:19 am 1-NOV 21,23

JTA — A Spanish politician who said that Palestinians have “the right to resist after decades of occupation” on October 7, when Hamas terrorists killed some 1,200 people in southern Israel and took at least 240 hostages, was named Spain’s minister of children and youth on Monday.Sira Rego, who has been a member of the European Parliament since 2019, has a Palestinian father who lives in the West Bank. On X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, she has since October 7 mostly posted and reposted content from others on the Israel-Hamas war, including graphic videos from the aftermath of bombings. When Israel’s embassy in Madrid published a statement on October 16 criticizing “some members of the Spanish government” for their comments on the war, Rego wrote: “Nobody here has defended Hamas. You have been exterminating a people for 75 years.” She also reposted tweets that said the “entire Israeli diplomatic delegation must be expelled from the Spanish State” and called Israel “undemocratic and corrupt.”Rego, 50, is a member of the left-wing United Left party, and her cabinet position is new. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has been locked in months of negotiations with various parties to form a governing parliamentary coalition, which will likely include multiple left-wing parties and, controversially, separatist Catalan factions.Ione Belarra, former acting social rights minister who last month had called to “urgently suspend diplomatic relations with the State of Israel,” lost her post on Monday. Jose Manuel Albares, who called Israel’s October 16 statement an “unfriendly gesture,” retained his position.Multiple Spanish synagogues have been hit with graffiti tied to the Israel-Hamas conflict. Madrid’s main synagogue in the heart of the Chamberí district was defaced with graffiti that read “Free Palestine” next to a crossed-out Star of David the day after the October 7 attacks.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Several IDF deaths in Gaza ground offensive were the result of friendly fire-Army says it found rocket-making lab, weapons and tunnel entrance inside mosque in Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighborhood, where troops are engaged in intense fighting against Hamas
By Emanuel Fabian Today, 3:06 am 8,NOV 21,23

The Israel Defense Forces has seen a number of incidents of so-called “friendly fire” during fighting in the Gaza Strip, some of them with deadly results, The Times of Israel has learned, as Israeli troops engaged Monday in intense combat while pushing forward with the military campaign in the Hamas-ruled enclave. There are currently thousands of infantry forces, tanks, and other troops in Gaza during Israel’s ground offensive against Hamas, operating in Gaza City’s dense neighborhoods. The military has said it is constantly assessing the ongoing fighting, including the cases of friendly fire, and quickly implementing lessons learned.Sixty-six soldiers have been killed in Gaza since the start of the ground incursion on October 27, which followed three weeks of aerial bombardments in the wake of the Hamas-led massacres on October 7, when Palestinian terrorists stormed the border into southern Israel and killed some 1,200 people — mostly civilians — and kidnapped at least 240.Israel declared war on Hamas in response, launching an offensive aimed at toppling Gaza-ruling terror group and securing the release of the hostages. The ground operation has concentrated on northern Gaza but is expected to expand to the Strip’s south in the future stages of the war.Over the weekend, Israeli ground forces moved into Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighborhood and the town of Jabaliya, which are both strongholds of Hamas. The military said Monday that IDF troops of the 188th Armored Brigade located a Hamas rocket-making lab, weapons, and a tunnel entrance inside a mosque in Zeitoun. They also found explosive devices and a drone.“I want you to understand: A mosque, in the Zeitoun area, was being used as a lab for making weapons,” IDF Spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said during an evening press conference.“Troops enter the mosque, carry out scans, and make sure there are no traps. They head inside this mosque and find a tunnel shaft… and a staircase,” he said.In the basement, Hagari said the troops found “a workshop for making rockets.”“Terrorists manufacturing rockets in a mosque. Using Islam and the symbols of Islam to create terror,” he charged.Hagari said the IDF will continue to expose Hamas’s use of civilian sites for terror. The IDF also detailed the operations of the 36th Division in the Gaza Strip over the past few days, during which troops battled hundreds of Hamas operatives, and located weapons and terror infrastructure in civilian sites.According to the IDF, the infantry forces, tanks, and combat engineers of the 36th Division are working to defeat Hamas’s Zeitoun battalion, operating in the neighborhood of the same name. The operations in Zeitoun come after the 36th Division completed the capture of Gaza City’s Shati camp and Sabra neighborhood.????The IDF details the operations of the 36th Division in the Gaza Strip over the past few days, during which troops battled hundreds of Hamas operatives and located weapons and infrastructure in civilian sites. (1/7) pic.twitter.com/PXFJqqEhHg— Emanuel (Mannie) Fabian (@manniefabian) November 20, 2023-The military believes troops have killed hundreds of terror operatives in Zeitoun so far. There is heavy fighting, as Hamas is operating in cells of between five and 10 gunmen in the area, according to military assessments. The IDF believes the fighting in Zeitoun will last at least another 72 hours, and when it ends, the IDF will continue to work to demolish all of the terror group’s infrastructure in the neighborhood. In a statement, the IDF said the troops, led by the Golani Infantry Brigade, have engaged in several gun battles with Hamas in Zeitoun, including operatives holed up in residential homes, hospitals, schools, and other civilian sites. The commander of the 36th Division, Brig. Gen. Dado Bar Kalifa said his troops “constantly encountered the enemy hiding behind children and women, and behind sensitive civilian infrastructure.”“The troops have encountered many dozens of terrorists since the beginning of the fighting in the neighborhood, conducting close-quarters fighting with them, and have so far eliminated many of them,” the IDF said. The IDF believes the fighting in Zeitoun will last at least another 72 hours, and when it ends, the IDF will continue to work to demolish all of the terror group’s infrastructure in the neighborhood. (4/7) pic.twitter.com/O9rkmeDXpM— Emanuel (Mannie) Fabian (@manniefabian) November 20, 2023-It said troops of the 188th Armored Brigade captured a number of Hamas sites in Zeitoun, including the offices of the head of Hamas’s Gaza City brigade.“The forces searched the area, located many weapons, and at the end of the searches, they destroyed the office of the brigade commander,” the IDF said.Forces of the Bislamach Brigade (the IDF’s School for Infantry Corps Professions and Squad Commanders) located and destroyed an Islamic Jihad compound in Zeitoun, where a number of heavy and long-range rockets were found. The 36th Division troops also directed several airstrikes in Zeitoun against Hamas operatives, as well as located a rocket-making lab, weapons, explosive devices, a drone, and a tunnel inside a mosque in the neighborhood. (7/7) pic.twitter.com/pEHa09ZAYr — Emanuel (Mannie) Fabian (@manniefabian) November 20, 2023-The 36th Division troops directed several airstrikes in Zeitoun against Hamas operatives.Fighting near Indonesian Hospital-Heavy fighting also continued Monday around several Gaza hospitals where Israel says Hamas has deeply embedded terror infrastructure.Israel has long asserted that Hamas uses hospitals in the Gaza Strip as the base for its terror activities. Since the start of the ongoing war, in which Israel has vowed to eliminate Hamas from the coastal enclave, the United States has backed up these charges with independent evidence. In Jabaliya, the Hamas-controlled health ministry announced the evacuation of 200 patients from the Indonesian Hospital with the help of the Red Cross, after claiming 12 people were killed there in an overnight Israeli strike. Israel has denied shelling the hospital, saying its troops returned fire on terrorists who targeted them from inside the 3.5-acre (1.4 hectare) compound.Ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra told AFP 200 people were evacuated from the Indonesian Hospital and taken by bus to Nasser hospital in the southern town of Khan Younis, where an AFP reporter saw two buses arriving in company of the Red Cross.Earlier this month, the Israeli Defense Forces said that it had intelligence documents showing the presence of a tunnel network underneath the Indonesian Hospital, as well as aerial imagery showing rocket launchers a few dozen meters from the complex. The IDF also continued Monday to operate inside Shifa Hospital, Gaza’s largestm where it has exposed weapons and tunnels along with camera footage from inside the hospital showing that some of the hostages had been brought there.Israeli officials have been intent on displaying evidence of Hamas’s misuse of Shifa to the world, to back up their assertions that the terror organization uses civilians and civilian infrastructure to shield itself, and thus shore up support for Israel’s ongoing offensive. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry claims that 13,000 people have been killed in Gaza since the start of the war on October 7, including at least 5,500 children and 3,500 women. The figures provided by the terror group cannot be independently verified and do not differentiate between civilians and Hamas operatives, and also do not distinguish between those killed by Israeli airstrikes and those killed by failed Palestinian rocket launches.Times of Israel staff and agencies contributed to this report.

Campus Antisemitism Legal Line could be college gamechanger-Antisemitic incidents surged globally since Oct. 7 but most aren’t reported. Here’s why-Up to 79% of antisemitic harassment is never divulged, according to experts who weigh in on ‘obstacles’ that deter Jewish victims – especially youth – from speaking out-By Matt Lebovic Today, 1:32 am 8,NOV 21,23

NEW YORK — John Michael Graves, 25, was walking out of his Moishe House residence in Seattle when he spotted half a dozen antisemitic flyers “plastered” onto poles near the unmarked building’s gate.“I ripped them down. It’s not clear how they even knew it was a Moishe House,” said Graves, referring to a cooperative group home for Jewish young adults. The flyers read “F–k You Israel” with crossed-out Jewish stars and were affixed onto street poles during the afternoon of October 24.“It really hit me in the gut,” Graves told The Times of Israel. But he and his fellow residents did not report the incident to the Moishe House movement, which says it reaches 70,000 Jews in 27 countries, including six locations in Israel.“We were scared and — it sounds ironic now — because this is going in a newspaper and more attention is being drawn to ourselves — I didn’t want to make it a bigger deal than it was,” said Graves. He is one of four residents in his Moishe House, which are generally populated by a mix of young professionals and grad students.“We are programmed to think it’s just some flyer, not an active death threat,” said Graves, who added that Moishe House has been an “incredible” resource for himself and other residents regarding the Israel-Hamas war.“When I saw the posters, I felt my hand grabbing at my Jewish star necklace,” said Madison Holt, 23, another resident of Moishe House in Seattle.“I couldn’t decide if I wanted to hide my necklace or not. I have always felt safe living here, but this definitely was a wake-up call for how things have changed since October 7,” Holt told The Times of Israel.Since the unprecedented Hamas massacres of 1,200 people in Israel last month and the taking of some 240 hostages, the Moishe House movement has provided new resources to its “community builders” around the world, including access to emotional support services, said Graves. Now, six weeks after the eruption of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7, world opinion has shifted away from recognizing and mourning these atrocities. The reluctance of Graves and Holt to report this incident of antisemitism is part of a widespread phenomenon, experts told The Times of Israel. Nearly four in five Jews who experience antisemitic harassment do not report it to law enforcement or media, according to American Jewish Committee statistics.“Varying degrees of trauma” are behind the lack of reporting, Anti-Defamation League (ADL) spokesperson Jake Hyman told The Times of Israel.“Some people may report right away, while others may want to pretend it never happened, which would be understandable,” said Hyman. An important development for universities, said Hyman, is the new “Campus Antisemitism Legal Line” (CALL) for any student, family, faculty, or staff member to “report incidents of antisemitic discrimination, intimidation, harassment, vandalism, or violence that may necessitate legal action,” said Hyman.Intake reports will be handled by lawyers working pro bono to represent victims “who choose to move forward with specific cases,” said Hyman.“CALL will also provide referrals to social services, mental health counseling services, and other relevant support services in their area,” said the ADL spokesperson. Not in my name-Experts told The Times of Israel that many high school pupils and college students are afraid to document harassment because it’s “nearly impossible to report anonymously if one wants an investigation with actual results and repercussions,” said Yael Lerman, executive director of the Saidoff Legal Department at StandWithUs, a pro-Israel educational organization. (This reporter works for StandWithUs as the director of its Holocaust Education Center.)-“Students who file discrimination or bias complaints under their name nearly inevitably become targets for ongoing harassment or social media by individuals, by anti-Israel student groups, and even in-person,” Lerman told The Times of Israel. The non-reporting of antisemitism extends beyond student bodies, said Lerman.“Many Jewish professionals on campus are not reporting antisemitic incidents because they are scared by what they see,” said Lerman, an attorney who leads a StandWithUs-cultivated network of lawyers willing to defend victims of antisemitism on campus, for free.“They delete evidence and hope that by not dealing with it, it will go away. The idea of holding antisemites accountable through the criminal justice system instead of remaining scared hasn’t taken hold yet in a broad enough way,” said Lerman. With social media and evolving technologies, students and staff alike are “afraid of being doxed and targeted for more harassment by being willing to come forward as witnessing antisemitic attacks,” Lerman said.Feelings of shame-The Israeli American Council (IAC) pointed to “shame” as one reason why so many American Jews do not report on antisemitism.“We know this because when we do receive reports [of antisemitic incidents], many times students and parents will indicate that they have experienced several other incidents before deciding to report,” said Karen Bar-On, the IAC’s vice president of activism.“Also, when we discuss the topic with community members or provide antisemitism training to educators and students through our school or community events, they will bring up cases they have experienced while admitting they have not reported them,” Bar-On told The Times of Israel.Founded in 2007, the IAC represents more than 800,000 Israelis and their families living in the US. Bar-On echoed attorney Lerman in asking Jews to reconsider the importance of reporting antisemitic harassment, as opposed to brushing it off.“First and foremost, we need to let people know how to report and constantly remind them what resources are at their service,” said Bar-On. “More importantly, community members must understand the importance of reporting and standing up to each and every incident they experience, no matter how ‘minor’ they may feel it is,” she said.Abraham Foxman, national director emeritus for the Anti-Defamation League, speaks at the Israeli American Council’s eighth annual summit in Austin, Texas, on January 20, 2023. (David Finkel photography)-According to data collected by the American Jewish Committee (AJC) in 2021, 79% of American Jews “targeted by antisemitic remarks did not report these incidents,” said Aaron Bregman, AJC’s director of high school affairs.“Many high school students who face antisemitism, discrimination, or bias choose not to report these incidents, fearing social retaliation and potential isolation,” said Bregman.Another factor involved in underreporting is that students “may not be certain whether they have experienced discrimination and may underestimate the severity of the issue,” said Bregman, adding, “Some students may also struggle to recognize and define antisemitic actions, hindering their ability to report accurately.”Bregman told The Times of Israel that “uncertainty” around discrimination “often stems from a perception that [Jewish students’] experiences do not compare to the discrimination faced by their peers,” he said.Several experts pointed to “microaggressions” as key to understanding the underreporting phenomenon. One long-time student services director at Ivy League universities said that far too many professors “challenge observant Jewish students about missing class during Jewish holidays,” she told The Times of Israel.Additionally, students may assume they have documented an incident when, procedurally, they haven’t.“Students think they have reported something when they comment on it in an institutional survey, but that reporting doesn’t get shared with the systems that track or even do anything about antisemitism on campus,” said the former Hillel professional, who asked to remain anonymous due to her position in academia.Disbelief that anything will be done-Across the Atlantic, in Britain, a “large proportion” of antisemitic incidents in public schools and university campuses are never reported, said Dave Rich of the Community Service Trust, which has recorded and responded to antisemitism since 1984.“The most likely reasons for not reporting are that they don’t feel anything will be done, or they don’t know how to report,” Rich told The Times of Israel.Within Europe, the European Union has conducted research into antisemitism in 2012 and 2018. Findings demonstrated that “most antisemitic harassment was not reported to anyone,” said Rich.“We don’t have specific data for non-reporting of campus or school-related antisemitism, but this gives some indication of what we might be looking at,” said Rich. With private Catholic universities in the US now opening their doors to enroll harassed Jewish students, the public is still only seeing the “tip of the iceberg” regarding antisemitism, experts believe. Without a significant increase in victims reporting on incidents of harassment, discrimination against Jews may continue to fly mostly under the radar.

Approximately 1,000 boats will gather in Turkey on Wednesday before heading toward Gaza in an attempt to break the Israeli blockade and disrupt maritime trade coming into Israel during the war with Hamas, in an apparent repeat of similar attempts from over a decade ago.In an interview with Turkish news website Haber7, Volkan Okçu, one of the organizers of the protest, indicated the boats will carry 4,500 people from 40 countries, “including anti-Zionist Jews.”Among the 1,000 vessels would be 313 boats filled with Russian activists, and 104 filled with Spanish activists, he said. Only 12 Turkish vessels will join the flotilla, he told Haber7.However, Okçu said in a later tweet that he expected the number of Turkish vessels to be much higher, at least 1,000, and insisted that the initiative is not associated with the Turkish government. He did not explain the discrepancy in numbers. The activist indicated to Haber7 that the flotilla is scheduled to leave Turkish coasts on Thursday. The maritime convoy is set to make a first stop in Cyprus before continuing toward the Israeli port of Ashdod. Some participants in the flotilla will also reportedly take their spouses and children on board.Okçu said that the main objective of the operation would be to cause disruption in international waters off the Israeli coast to the maritime trade heading for the port of Ashdod, in order to interrupt the supply of goods to Israel for a week or even up to 10 days. The protest action is reminiscent of the attempt by the so-called “Gaza Freedom Flotilla” in May 2010, which tried to breach the maritime blockade on the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, but was intercepted by the Israeli Navy. After the convoy refused Israeli Navy orders to reroute to Ashdod, Israeli commandos boarded one of the ships, the Mavi Marmara, which was carrying over 600 passengers. After being met with violent resistance the commandos opened fire, killing 10 Turkish activists. Ten Israeli soldiers were wounded during the attack.Following the Mavi Marmara incident, several other flotillas to Gaza were attempted, but largely foiled by Israeli military and diplomatic activities.“The Zionist regime seems to have no chance to repeat the Mavi Marmara incident,” the Turkish activist said. “The vessels sail under flags of the US, the UK, Luxembourg, Russian, Germany, Spain, Poland, and many other countries.” The activist noted that luxury boats will also join the flotilla and that participants from Europe and the USA will spend an average of $14,000 to join.Okçu vowed that protesters would “strictly follow international rules” and would not carry any weapons, “not even a pocket knife,” so as not to give Israel any “excuse” to intervene.“The moment we enter Gaza’s territorial waters, [Israeli forces] can only search us,” the activist said, “or tow us to their ports, and impose fines,” but will not be allowed by international law to raid the convoy in international waters, the way they assaulted the Mavi Marmara in 2010. “[Israel] would pay a heavy price for attempting any crazy action against such a large international peace fleet.”The diplomatic crisis between Israel and Turkey that ensued after the Mavi Marmara incident was only solved in 2016, when Jerusalem agreed to pay $20 million in compensation to the families of the victims and to allow Turkish aid into Gaza – and in return, Istanbul agreed not to hold any individual Israeli nationals criminally or financially liable for the incident. The blockade on Gaza was imposed by Israel in 2007, shortly after Hamas took control of the coastal enclave, and enforced in cooperation with neighboring Egypt to prevent the terror group from rearming and becoming an even greater menace, after it repeatedly declared its intention to destroy Israel. The blockade involved a ban on specific goods, and a limitation of the delivery into Gaza of dual-use materials that could be utilized for both civilian and military purposes by Hamas.Despite the blockade, Hamas since 2007 managed to acquire weaponry and funding, thanks mainly to Iranian and Qatari support, and to fire rockets at Israeli towns and cities on a regular basis, causing skirmishes which on repeated occasions escalated into protracted conflict.Hamas’s attacks on Israel culminated in its October 7 onslaught on southern Israel, when 3,000 Hamas-led terrorists burst through the border and slaughtered 1,200 people, most of them civilians, rampaging through communities in southern Israel and mowing down partygoers at a music festival. The terrorists also abducted some 240 people to Gaza, where they are still held hostage. The Mavi Marmara incident from 2010 carries particular significance for the Hamas regime in Gaza, as a symbol of international support to ending the blockade. A monument erected in the Gaza port commemorated the event; it was demolished by the IDF on Thursday in the course of Israel’s ongoing war, launched after the October 7 massacres, aimed at destroying Hamas.2010 yılında işgal güçlerinin Mavi Marmara’ya yaptığı saldırı sonrasında Gazzeliler, Mavi Marmara’yı bekledikleri limana bir anıt inşa etmişlerdi.2. It is unclear whether the convoy that is set to depart from Turkey on Thursday is organized by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition or is a separate initiative.Various attempts were made by international activists after 2010 to bust the blockade, including one by a boat carrying only women in 2016, and another by a Swedish-flagged boat in 2018. In both cases, the vessels were intercepted by the Israeli navy and towed to the port of Ashdod.

Governor calls demonstration 'repulsive and disgusting' ‘Israel is not our friend’: Neo-Nazis salute Hitler in march through Wisconsin town-‘Blood Tribe’ white supremacist group parade passes old synagogue structure no longer in use, waving swastikas and chanting ‘There will be blood’By Rachel Leigh Hale Today, 12:22 am 16,NOV 21,23

MADISON, Wisconsin (JTA) — A neo-Nazi group of around 20 people marched through this Midwestern capital city on Saturday morning brandishing black-and-white swastika flags, chanting “There will be blood” and saluting Adolf Hitler. The group wore shirts labeled “Blood Tribe,” identifying them as members of a white supremacist group that the Anti-Defamation League says “openly directs its vitriol at Jews, ‘non-whites’ and the LGBTQ+ community” and “aims to usher in a resurgence of Nazi ideas and ultimately build a white ethno-state.” The group was founded two years ago and is based in Maine, where its founder had hoped to build a compound, but has adherents elsewhere. The demonstrators expressed anti-Israel messages, in addition to antisemitic ones, as they stood in front of the Wisconsin State Capital for about 30 minutes before marching to a nearby park. They chanted “Israel is not our friend” and shouted “We are everywhere,” according to bystanders. They also hurled racial slurs at onlookers.Videos posted to social media also showed the group stopping in front of the fourth-oldest surviving synagogue structure in the United States, James Madison Park’s Gates of Heaven, which is no longer actively used. The incident follows a Madison Police investigation into a November 7 incident, in which a group of Jewish students reported having a rock thrown at them after attending a vigil supporting Israel. According to the ADL, there was a 400% spike in reported antisemitic incidents nationally in the month since Hamas’s October 7 massacre in Israel, in which 3,000 terrorists murdered some 1,200 people in southern Israel. In the days following the devastating onslaught, which sparked an ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, pro-Palestinian protesters at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the state’s flagship public campus, chanted “Glory to the martyrs,” as well as, “We will liberate the land by any means necessary.”“What was clear to me quite quickly is they were emboldened to speak because of the events in Israel,” said Ben Newman, a Jewish student at the University of Wisconsin, regarding the neo-Nazi marchers. “It is disheartening that people do not see that connection between the amount of speech against Israel, the rising antisemitism, and the fact that the worst members of our society, the neo-Nazis, feel emboldened to come out.”Gov. Tony Evers, Sen. Tammy Baldwin, Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes Conway, and several lawmakers condemned the demonstration.“Let us be clear: neo-Nazis, antisemitism, and white supremacy have no home in Wisconsin. We will not accept or normalize this rhetoric and hate,” Evers said in a statement. “It’s repulsive and disgusting, and I join Wisconsinites in condemning and denouncing their presence in our state in the strongest terms possible.”The neo-Nazis briefly walked on the University of Wisconsin campus. Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin called the group “utterly repugnant” and gave a rundown of university resources in a statement sent to students.“I am horrified to see these symbols here in Madison. Hatred and antisemitism are completely counter to the university’s values, and the safety and well-being of our community must be our highest priorities,” Mnookin, who is Jewish, wrote in the statement.Newman praised the administration’s swift response but added that he would like to see the same support when people who are not waving Nazi flags have also engaged in antisemitic speech.“It’s not surprising that we’re able to condemn Nazis, but we struggle to condemn people who call for an intifada,” Newman said, referencing protests on campus. “We really need to reflect on why that is the case as we see antisemitism fester on this campus, and Jewish students feel more isolated from their non-Jewish peers.”

South Africa to host BRICS summit on Israel-Hamas war-Virtual summit of forum comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa aims to draw up common response to Gaza conflict; UN secretary-general also attending-By AFP 20 November 2023, 11:19 pm 2

South Africa will Tuesday host a virtual summit of the BRICS group of nations, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, to discuss the war between Israel and the Hamas terror group, Pretoria and Moscow said Monday. The BRICS —  Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa — are a group of major emerging economies seeking to reshape the US and Western-led global order.Tuesday’s “Extraordinary Joint Meeting on the Middle East Situation in Gaza” will be hosted by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in the hope of drawing up a common response to the more than six-week conflict.Leaders from Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates — who are all due to join the BRICS group in January 2024 — will attend the meeting.UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will also participate, the South African presidency said in a statement. It added that all five BRICS heads of state will join the virtual summit, after which a joint statement with particular reference to Gaza is expected.War erupted after Hamas’s October 7 massacre, which saw some 3,000 terrorists burst across the border into Israel from the Gaza Strip by land, air and sea, killing some 1,200 people and seizing over 240 hostages of all ages.In Gaza, officials say around 13,300 people, more than 5,500 of them children, have been killed in Israel’s retaliatory air and ground offensive, which aims to destroy the terror group’s infrastructure. The figures are issued by the Hamas-run health ministry and cannot be independently verified, and are believed to include both civilians and Hamas members killed in Gaza, including as a consequence of terror groups’ own rocket misfires.South Africa has long been a vocal supporter of the Palestinian cause, with the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party often linking it to its own struggle against apartheid. The ANC said last Thursday that it would support a parliamentary motion to suspend diplomatic relations with Israel until it agrees to a ceasefire in Gaza, decrying the “genocidal actions of the Israeli regime.”On Friday, South Africa joined four other nations in calling for an International Criminal Court investigation into the Israel-Hamas war.China has historically been sympathetic to the Palestinians and supportive of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.Beijing has been calling for an immediate ceasefire since the start of the war last month.India, which has tried to balance its current close ties with Israel and its traditional support for the Palestinians, may be a moderating voice.Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused the West of stoking tensions in the Middle East, and criticized Israel for its conduct in the conflict.Putin skipped the last BRICS annual summit in Johannesburg, as he is the target of an International Criminal Court arrest warrant — a provision that South Africa as an ICC member would be expected to implement if he were to set foot in the country.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Israel recalls envoy to South Africa after Pretoria calls for Netanyahu’s arrest-The South African gov’t has repeatedly described Israel’s campaign in Gaza as ‘genocide’ and has filed a referral to the International Criminal Court against Israel for war crimes
By Jeremy Sharon 20 November 2023, 11:03 pm 34

Israel recalled its Ambassador to South Africa Eli Belotserkovsky for consultations on Monday following a series of highly antagonistic comments and steps by the government in Pretoria over Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.Earlier on Monday, a South African government minister called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue an arrest warrant for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by mid-December.South Africa has already recalled its own ambassador and diplomatic staff from Israel, and the government has repeatedly described the Israeli campaign in Gaza as “genocide.”“Against the background of recent comments from South Africa, the Israel ambassador to South Africa has been called for consultations in Jerusalem,” read a short statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued Monday night.During a press briefing on Monday, South African Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said the government expected the ICC to issue an arrest warrant against Netanyahu, and that failure to do so would represent a failure of global governance.“The world cannot simply stand by and watch. The global community needs to rise to stop this genocide now,” said Ntshavheni. She noted that South Africa’s ambassador to The Hague in the Netherlands had filed a referral to the ICC “to investigate the commission of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide” against Israel last week, together with the Comoros, Djibouti, Bolivia and Bangladesh.“Given that much of the global community are witnessing the commission of these crimes in real-time, including statements of genocidal intent by many Israeli leaders, we expect that warrants of arrest for these leaders including Prime Minister Netanyahu will be issued shortly,” said Ntshavheni.“Failure to do so will be indicative of a lack of will to act by the ICC and a strong signal to the total failure of the global system of good governance and the need to establish a new system.”Earlier this month, the South African government recalled its ambassador and diplomatic mission to Israel, described the war against Hamas in Gaza as “genocide,” and said it was considering shutting down the Israeli embassy in Pretoria entirely. And last week, a spokesperson for the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party said the party “Cannot sit back and watch the genocidal actions of the Israeli regime.”Seven other countries have taken diplomatic steps against Israel, since the beginning of its war against Hamas, including Bolivia, Turkey, Jordan, Colombia, Chile, Honduras, and Chad.Israel declared war on Hamas in Gaza after the terror group invaded southern Israel on October 7 with approximately 3,000 terrorists who killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, brutally massacring babies, children and the elderly, as well as revelers at an outdoor festival, during the savage assault.Hamas also abducted more than 240 hostages from Israel, whom it is holding captive in Gaza without access to visits by the International Committee of the Red Cross or any other humanitarian organization. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza claims that some 13,000 people have been killed in Israel’s subsequent air and ground offensive, but those figures cannot be independently verified, and likely include both civilians and Hamas members killed in Gaza, including those who have died as a result of misfiring rockets launched by terror groups inside the enclave.Pretoria has long been an ardent supporter of the Palestinians, and the ANC has sought to link its struggle against the apartheid regime in South Africa to the demands of the Palestinians for an independent state.Separately, Foreign Minister Eli Cohen together with Dutch Foreign Minister Henke Bruins Slot spoke with families of the hostages in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem on Monday night.Among those present were the family members of Ofir Engel, a dual Dutch-Israeli citizen who was abducted by Hamas from Kibbutz Be’eri.Foreign Minister Eli Cohen and Dutch Foreign Minister Henke Bruins Slot meet with the families of hostages taken captive by Hamas in Gaza, in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem, November 20, 2023. (Miri Shamanowitz, Ministry of Foreign Affairs)-Cohen called on the Dutch government to help take action against Hamas’s sources of funding in Europe and said Israel would continue fighting the terror group “until its goals are achieved” and the hostages returned.“I call on the Netherlands to act decisively against the terrorist organization Hamas and its affiliates, today it is us and tomorrow it is the entire West,” said Cohen.“Since the massacre of October 7, many people in the world understand who Israel is facing Israel: a murderous terrorist organization, worse than ISIS, which does not hesitate to murder and kidnap babies, children, women, and the elderly.”

UN chief calls for interim Arab-US force to control Gaza after war-Guterres says United Nations protectorate would not work, but plan for post-war international force and eventual Palestinian Authority takeover already rejected by Netanyahu, Arabs
By AFP and ToI Staff 20 November 2023, 10:33 pm 20

A UN protectorate in Gaza after the current Israel-Hamas war would not solve the conflict there, the world body’s secretary-general said Monday, calling instead for a “transition period,” involving Arab nations and the United States, and leading to a two-state solution.Antonio Guterres said it was “important to be able to transform this tragedy into an opportunity” — which, for him, meant moving “in a determined and irreversible way to a two-state solution.”That would mean, after the current war between Israel and Hamas terrorists in Gaza ends, “a strengthened Palestinian Authority assuming responsibilities in Gaza,” he said. But the PA cannot go into Gaza backed by Israeli tanks, he added — meaning the “international community needs to look into a transition period.”“I do not think that a UN protectorate in Gaza is a solution,” however, Guterres said.Instead, he called for a “multi-stakeholder approach” that would see the US act as the “main guarantor” of Israel’s security, while Arab nations are “essential” to support Palestinians.Everybody needs to come together to create the conditions for the transition, allowing for a strengthened Palestinian Authority to assume responsibilities in Gaza,” and from there to a two-state solution, he said. The Palestinian Authority used to rule Gaza until 2007, when it was overthrown by Hamas. It continues to rule parts of the West Bank, but is widely viewed as corrupt and ineffective.Gutteres’s plan also conflicts with Israel’s current stated plans for Gaza’s post-war future.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not yet elaborated on who will run Gaza once Hamas is eliminated, but has said that the PA is “not fit” in its current form to govern the Strip, and has also rebuffed calls for an international force.Additionally, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi told the Manama Security Forum on Saturday that “no Arab troops” would be deployed in Gaza after the war.Guterres also again denounced the killing of civilians — especially children — in Gaza, as Israel wages an air and ground campaign aimed at eliminating Hamas following its October 7 massacre. For seven years now, he has published a “list of shame” of parties to armed conflict who commit grave violations against children. Israel’s absence from the list has previously been criticized by human rights organizations.Without saying whether that may change this year, Guterres put the number of children killed in Gaza into stark context. In the “shame” reports, the highest number of children killed in one year by one actor was the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2017-2018, followed by the Syrian government and its allies before 2020. Both times the tally was in the hundreds.“Without entering into discussing the accuracy of the numbers that were published by de facto authorities in Gaza, what is clear is that we have had in a few weeks thousands of children killed,” Guterres told reporters.“We are witnessing a killing of civilians that is unparalleled and unprecedented in any conflict since I am secretary-general.”Guterres had already caused widespread outrage in Israel when he appeared to justify the deadly Hamas assault on Israel.War erupted after Hamas’s shock October 7 assault on southern Israeli communities, when 3,000 terrorists broke through the border and murdered some 1,200 people, a majority of them civilians, amid brutal atrocities, and kidnapped some 240 people to Gaza.In response, Israel vowed to eliminate the terror group in a military campaign that the Hamas-run health ministry says has killed 13,000 people in Gaza, including thousands of children. Those figures cannot be independently verified, and do not distinguish between terror operatives, noncombatants, and those killed in failed rocket launches.

Cyprus prepared to ‘immediately’ ship aid to Gaza through sea corridor-Shipments can begin traveling from Larnaca to Gaza as soon as there is pause in fighting, as part of initiative to boost limited aid entering through Rafah crossing-By Agencies 20 November 2023, 10:33 pm 0

Cyprus is ready to “immediately” begin shipping large quantities of humanitarian aid to Gaza in vessels that can navigate shallow water once conditions on the ground allow for it, the president of the east Mediterranean island nation said Monday.Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides said his country’s proposal for a maritime corridor from Cyprus’s port of Larnaca to Gaza is the “only one currently being discussed on an international level” as a feasible way to significantly supplement the trickle of aid getting into the enclave through Egypt’s Rafah border checkpoint.Planning for the corridor of about 230 miles (370 kilometers) is essentially completed, and aid can begin to flow when a pause in fighting is declared, Christodoulides said. The Cypriot leader, who has been in regular contact with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the proposal, said that getting a green light to start the shipments is a complicated matter requiring intricate negotiations, in light of the ongoing Israeli military operations in Gaza.“Everyone supports this initiative, the European Union, the United States,” Christodoulides told The Associated Press in an interview. “When we say that we’re a bridge to the region, we’re showing this in practice. It’s very important for our country.”More significant is that Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lior Haiat said his country was “definitely in favor of the project.”“We are exploring it with all the relevant ministries and agencies in Israel,” Haiat said, without indicating when the corridor from Cyprus might open.War was sparked by the Hamas terror group’s shock October 7 assault on southern Israeli communities, when 3,000 terrorists broke through the border and murdered some 1,200 people, a majority of them civilians, and kidnapped some 240 people to Gaza.In response, Israel vowed to eliminate the terror group in a military campaign that the Hamas-run health ministry says has killed 13,000 people in Gaza, including thousands of children. Those figures cannot be independently verified, and do not distinguish between terror operatives and noncombatants, or those killed by failed rocket launches.Aid organizations say civilians do not have enough food or clean water, and hospitals in Gaza report being out of basic medical supplies. The Israeli government has said it was reluctant to let aid into Gaza because Hamas might divert the shipments and thereby extend the group’s survival. Its sensitivity regarding the security of supplies coming from Cyprus was addressed with an invitation for authorities from Israel, the US, and other European countries to join Cypriot agents in vetting all shipments so nothing could be used by Hamas against Israel. In the immediate term, shallow-draft vessels will be used to ferry the aid, and Cyprus is in contact with Gulf countries that can dispatch such ships, Christodoulides said.“What do we want? We want everything to be in place so when the situation on the ground allows for it, we can start,” Cyprus’s president said.In the medium term, planning foresees the construction of a floating dock off Gaza where all types of ships can offload assistance. For the long-term, the idea is to construct a Gaza port, he said.According to Christodoulides, a side benefit to using the port of Larnaca to load cargo is its ample facilities to store the aid and its very close proximity to the island’s main airport as well as a US-funded facility built to train personnel from Cyprus and neighboring countries on port and maritime security.Medicine, food, clothing, and other essentials collected and stored at the port will flow to Gaza continuously, but it would be a one-way aid corridor, meaning that no Palestinians would be permitted to use the ships to leave the enclave, he said.Aid reaching Gaza would be distributed by the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees using its established network, Christodoulides said.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Israeli startup comes out of stealth to tackle cyber threats in the GenAI wild west-Lasso Security raises $6m in seed funding while its co-founder fights in the Israeli-Hamas war and its workers raise donations to supply protective gear for soldiers-By Sharon Wrobel 20 November 2023, 9:34 pm 0

While one of its founders is drafted in the Israeli army to fight the Hamas terror group, Tel Aviv-based startup Lasso Security came out of stealth on Monday armed with $6 million in seed funding. The Israeli startup has secured seed funding led by London-based Entrée Capital with the participation of Samsung Next, to enter the fray in the market for the protection against cyber threats as more and more businesses are adopting generative AI technologies.Lasso confirmed it rejected investment capital from Web Summit’s venture capital arm, after the outgoing CEO of the tech summit company accused Israel of committing “war crimes” in its response to the Hamas terror group’s devastating onslaught. With the recent hype over OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a so-called large language model that uses deep learning to spit out human-like text, and Google’s Bard chatbot, an array of new applications and tools in the field of AI have been sprouting at a swift pace. The fast adoption of new GenAI and LLMs technologies by businesses and enterprises also makes their network systems and devices vulnerable to multiple security threats, including data exposure.Founded in July by serial entrepreneurs Elad Schulman, Ophir Dror, and Yuval Abad, Lasso has developed a security platform to help organizations make the transition to the GenAI technological revolution, while protecting their data, customers, and employees. The startup says that its platform vigilantly safeguards every data point, command, and prompt generated by LLMs, allowing businesses to embed GenAI technologies without jeopardizing both data and user privacy while protecting against malicious threats.“As early as next year, organizations without a dedicated GenAI risk management solution will experience negative outcomes,” said Lasso co-founder and CEO Schulman. “We’ve analyzed numerous LLM security challenges and developed a comprehensive solution encompassing preventative and remediation measures.”“Our mission is to equip businesses with robust defenses to safeguard their systems, including those using generative AI technologies that leverage LLMs,” Schulman added.Lasso says its platform is addressing numerous, sophisticated and emerging LLM cybersecurity threats, such as model theft, malicious code generation, prompt injection, data poisoning, and supply chain attacks.One-third of businesses and organizations are already regularly using generative AI in at least one function, according to a recent report by consultancy giant McKinsey. In addition, 40 percent of those reporting AI adoption at their organizations say their companies expect to invest more in generative AI technologies, according to the report.Dror, Lasso’s co-founder, is one of the more than 300,000 reservists who have been called up to the Israeli army in the aftermath of the October 7 atrocities perpetrated by Hamas, which killed about 1,200 people, most of them civilians. The Iran-backed terror group seized at least 240 hostages under the cover of massive rocket fire.In the onset of the war, co-founder Dror was at the front and realized that he and other soldiers lacked protective gear, Lasso’s employees decided that they were “enlisting” in the effort and raised funds to supply them with essential equipment. In realizing there was a bigger need in other army units, Lasso joined forces with the Duvdevan Foundation and the National Union of Israeli Students and established a logistics center at the company’s headquarters in Tel Aviv.Together, they raised $1.5 million from donations, which resulted in the supply of over 800 packages of protective equipment, first aid kits, field medicine, and other necessary supplies to numerous Israel Defense Forces units to help ensure the safety of soldiers in the field.

2 Gaza terrorists found in Rahat a month after October 7 assault-Shin Bet, Border Police troops captured Hamas terrorists two weeks ago from house in Bedouin city; no Israeli forces hurt in operation-By ToI Staff 20 November 2023, 8:28 pm 3

Elite forces two weeks ago captured two terrorists who had infiltrated from the Gaza Strip during the October 7 assault, detaining them in the southern Bedouin city of Rahat, nearly a month after they first entered the country, the Border Police and the Shin Bet security agency announced in a Monday statement. The terrorists were arrested and detained for questioning, and no Israeli troops were hurt in the operation. The two had infiltrated Israel from Gaza during Hamas’s surprise assault. which saw some 3,000 terrorists burst across the border by land, air, and sea, killing some 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and seizing over 240 hostages of all ages.Rahat, just north of Beersheba, is some 30 kilometers (around 18.5 miles) from the Gaza Strip. The statement gave no details on how the two terrorists reached Rahat, though Channel 12 reported that the pair was hiding out in the house of a local resident, who claimed not to have known they were terrorists on the run.Channel 12 added that the arrests were not publicized in the past two weeks due to suspicions that the terrorists may have been planning another attack inside Israel. The Shin Bet statement clarified that one of the detainees was a known Hamas operative, while the other had entered Israel along with hundreds of others after the Gaza border fence was breached on October 7.Lahav 433, the Israel Police’s criminal investigation division, has been collecting evidence of murder, torture and other atrocities perpetrated by Hamas on October 7, in preparation for criminal prosecution. Investigators have been collecting testimonies and evidence, and interrogating the terrorists who were captured alive. Most details of the investigations are currently under a gag order.News of the arrests earlier this month came hours after a Knesset committee hearing on legislating a death penalty for terrorism. The bill proposes that the only punishment for someone convicted of killing an Israeli citizen due to racist motivations or “hostility” to the Israeli public “in order to harm the State of Israel and the revival of the Jewish people in our land” would be the death penalty. However, Deputy Attorney General Ran Nizri, representing the families of the hostages held by Hamas in Gaza at Monday’s hearing, argued that current law allows for the death penalty against terrorists, a position supported earlier this week by former attorney general Avichai Mandelblit.

IDF: Some 300 Gaza detainees questioned, give vital details on Hamas bases in hospitals-Military says suspects being interrogated at new facility in southern Israel; other Gazans in unprecedented numbers said willingly providing intel on Hamas activities
By Emanuel Fabian and ToI Staff 20 November 2023, 7:49 pm 18

The Israeli military said Monday that it had established a detention facility in southern Israel to bring detainees from the Gaza Strip for questioning and has interrogated some 300 people, including terrorists from Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and other groups at the facility so far.The Israel Defense Forces said the terror operatives and detainees provided interrogators with the locations of Hamas tunnel networks and weapons depots in Gaza, as well as detailing the terror group’s methods of operation, including their widespread use of human shields. The IDF’s Military Intelligence Directorate’s Unit 504 — which specializes in HUMINT (human intelligence) — has dozens of Arabic-speaking soldiers that are on the ground in the Gaza Strip, alongside the combat units, carrying out field interrogations and providing intelligence to forces, the military said.Unit 504 has doubled its personnel amid the fighting, and established a new sub-unit specifically for southern Israel.Overall, the unit has questioned some 500 Palestinians and has made millions of calls to civilians to evacuate northern Gaza since the beginning of the fighting in the Strip.“Each and every investigation leads to the incrimination of new sites, and the human intelligence that emerges… is an inseparable layer of the complete intelligence picture,” said a senior Unit 504 officer. The IDF published three videos showing detainees detailing to Unit 504 interrogators Hamas’s use of hospitals for terror purposes. The men described how they hid at the Shifa and Rantisi hospitals, the Red Crescent building, and other medical centers, while Hamas used the sites to fight Israeli soldiers. While some detainees are terror suspects, others worked for the Hamas-run government, and some appeared to be uninvolved but had knowledge of the terror group’s activities.Israel says Hamas uses Shifa and other hospitals as protection for its terror activity, and has specifically singled out Shifa as a key underground operations center for the group. On Sunday, the military shared new footage of the underground network of tunnels and bunkers it says is buried under the hospital, as Israeli forces continue to operate in and around the facility. It also released surveillance camera footage from Shifa showing Hamas terrorists bringing a Nepali and Thai citizen who were abducted from Israel on October 7, when thousands of terrorists burst across the border into Israel from Gaza and killed some 1,200 people, a majority of them civilians, and also took some 240 hostages of all ages.Vowing to eliminate Hamas, Israel declared war and launched an offensive it said is aimed at destroying the terror group’s infrastructure and targeting all areas where Hamas operates, while seeking to minimize civilian casualties. The Israeli military has been operating ground forces in northern Gaza for close to a month, focused on terror targets in that part of the enclave, and specifically Shifa Hospital.Israeli officials have been intent on producing evidence of Hamas’s misuse of Shifa to the world, to back up their assertions that the terror organization uses civilians and civilian infrastructure to shield itself, and thus shore up support for Israel’s ongoing offensive. In one video provided on Monday by the military of part of an interrogation of a terror suspect apprehended last week, the suspect says he was at Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, where some 50,000 people were seeking refuge, and the “doctors were furious because Hamas operatives and operatives of other terror groups were inside the hospital.”The suspect estimated that there were about 100 such operatives at the hospital and that some “dressed as nursing staff and other medical staff “to blend in with the hospital wards,” even in the intensive care unit.Another suspect who gave his name as Hamuda Riad Asad Shalamah, a father of three from Gaza City, said he was an internet application engineer at the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry and sought refuge with his family at the Red Crescent building in the city when the war began, as it was considered “safe and secure.”He said the 10-floor complex hosted about 40,000 people, including Hamas members who “continued to operate” from the building.“What I saw was how they wrapped the rockets with mattresses and hid them…and also guns,” he said in the interrogation, according to a English translation provided by the IDF.If “one of their rockets would explode, it could kill 50 of us, or more.”“This happened on a daily basis. No one can tell them no. Who could do so? If you dare confront a Hamas member, he may kill you,” he added.Shalamah said the “sheer number of people in the place served as protection for them. We became their human shields. It’s obvious that the IDF would not strike a place with 40,000 people in it.”“It was scary, the whole thing was terrible. We went there to find shelter, and then they came and endangered me and my family at this place,” he went on.In a third clip of an interrogation provided by the military, the suspect who gives his name as Abdelrahman Alaa Ibrahim Samur, said he can answer questions about what he saw at the “Swedish Hospital” in Gaza, which belongs to UNRWA (The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East) and at Rantisi Hospital in the city.Samur said he was at Rantisi Hospital for five days and saw “Hamas operatives who took control of the hospital.”They numbered about 100 and were “organized, with several tents, with each group of operatives by themselves [in groups] of 4-5,” he said, adding that they “carried out attacks.”Samur said Hamas and others operated at the hospital “on a large scale. There were so many of them, it was actually really scary.”At the Swedish Hospital, he said he saw at least “seven operatives” dressed is civilian clothing and armed.Samur said the operatives operated from the hospital and slept there. “It was a secure place and no one could locate them there.”He said they used the hospital as a “base of operations, they prepared themselves from within the hospital, launched units for their missions outside.”The IDF said Unit 504 also had sources in the Gaza Strip that were providing information that was translated into intelligence for the ground forces operating in the Palestinian enclave since late last month.“We received thousands of phone calls from [Palestinians willing to provide information] at a magnitude never before seen in the unit. It is evident that the residents of the Gaza Strip are not satisfied with the barbaric behavior of Hamas. The ordinary citizen understands that Hamas is bringing a disaster on the residents of Gaza that will be difficult for them to recover from,” the senior officer adds.As part of the IDF’s efforts to evacuate Palestinians from northern Gaza during the ground offensive, Unit 504 made more than 30,000 calls, sent more than 10 million text messages, and more than nine million recorded messages to Gazan civilians. The IDF also dropped some four million leaflets warning Palestinians of the dangers of staying in northern Gaza, it said. The IDF said the evacuation from northern Gaza allowed it to carry out heavier strikes and operate more widely in the area against Hamas infrastructure. Air strikes continued in southern Gaza at the same time, with only the small al-Mawasi area along the coast declared by the IDF to be a “safe zone.”Speaking on Monday following an assessment of the Shin Bet security service’s operations in the southern arena, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said: “The action of the Shin Bet in investigating terrorists caught in the field by the forces, alongside the work of the Shin Bet coordinators inside the Gaza Strip with the ground forces, is a crucial element that becomes the eyes through which the forces know where to go.”“Every fighter who maneuvers in the field understands that… two important goals are achieved — first, to fight and defeat Hamas, to harm the terrorists, those who sent them, their senior commanders and their infrastructure. They also understand very well that in their actions, they bring about the return of the hostages as soon as possible,” said the defense minister, adding that the return of the hostages is a top priority.“It’s right in front of me — the pictures of the children, the pictures of the families are always at the top of the list of priorities,” he said.

Houthis publish video of assault on ship-Houthis say Israeli ships ‘legitimate target,’ as threat to global shipping grows-Houthi official warns capture of Galaxy Leader, linked to Israeli businessman, ‘only the beginning’; Yemeni rebels boarded ship using same method Iran uses to seize vessels-By AFP and ToI Staff 20 November 2023, 6:55 pm 25

Israeli ships are a “legitimate target,” Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels warned on Monday after their seizure of an Israel-linked cargo vessel opened a new dimension in Israel’s war against Hamas.Sunday’s capture of the Galaxy Leader and its 25 international crew members came days after the Iran-backed Houthis threatened to target Israeli shipping over the Israel-Hamas war.The Houthis have fired several ballistic missiles and drones at Eilat since the beginning of the war last month, all of which were intercepted or missed their targets. One of the surface-to-surface missiles was shot down by Israel’s most advanced air defense system, the Arrow 3, marking the system’s first successful interception of a missile. The Houthis have said they are acting as part of the “axis of resistance” against Israel, which includes Iran-backed terror groups in Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq. The Yemeni rebel group’s slogan is “God is great, death to America, death to Israel, curse on the Jews, victory for Islam.”The recent attacks are the first entry into a foreign war for the Houthis, who control much of impoverished Yemen and have been fighting a Saudi-led coalition since 2015.“Israeli ships are legitimate targets for us anywhere… and we will not hesitate to take action,” Major General Ali Al-Moshki, a Houthi military official, told the group’s Al-Massirah TV station.Analysts also said Houthi threats to shipping around the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a choke point at the foot of the commercially vital Red Sea, were likely to rise. The Bahamas-flagged, British-owned Galaxy Leader is operated by a Japanese firm but has links to Israeli businessman Abraham “Rami” Ungar. The Houthis said the capture was in retaliation for Israel’s war against Hamas, which was sparked by Hamas’s shock October 7 assault on southern Israeli communities, when 3,000 terrorists broke through the border and murdered some 1,200 people, a majority of them civilians, amid brutal atrocities, and kidnapped some 240 people to Gaza.In response, Israel vowed to eliminate the terror group in a military campaign that the Hamas-run health ministry says has killed 13,000 people in Gaza, including thousands of children. Those figures cannot be independently verified, and do not distinguish between terror operatives and noncombatants.Sunday’s ship seizure “is only the beginning,” Houthi spokesman Mohammed Abdul-Salam said Sunday in a statement posted on X, formerly Twitter, pledging further maritime attacks until Israel halts its Gaza campaign.Iran-style boarding-Maritime security company Ambrey said it had learned that the rebels boarded the ship by rappelling or sliding down a rope from a helicopter — the method used by Iran during previous vessel seizures in the Strait of Hormuz. The Houthis later published a video of the assault on the ship. The vessel headed from Turkey to India was re-routed to the Yemeni port of Salif port in Hodeida province, according to Ambrey and a Yemeni maritime source.Ambrey said the owner of the Galaxy Leader, which transports cars and other vehicles, is listed as Britain’s Ray Car Carriers whose parent company belongs to Ungar, the Israeli businessman.Israel’s military said the seizure was a “very grave incident of global consequence,” while a US military official called it “a flagrant violation of international law.”The crew was reportedly “under investigation” by the Houthis, Ambrey said. They include Ukrainians, Bulgarians, Filipinos, Mexicans, and a Romanian, according to Israeli and Romanian officials.Nippon Yusen, also known as NYK Line of Japan, said it had set up a task team to gather information and ensure the crew’s safety.Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa said Tokyo was “directly approaching the Houthis” as well as communicating with Israel.“We are also urging Saudi Arabia, Oman, Iran, and other countries concerned to strongly urge the Houthis for the early release of the vessel and crew members,” she said.‘Threat likely to rise’The office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu characterized the capture as an “Iranian attack against an international vessel,” an accusation dismissed by Iran.“We have repeatedly announced that the resistance groups in the region represent their countries and make decisions and act based on the interests of their countries,” said Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani.Yemen’s coastline overlooks the Bab al-Mandab Strait — a narrow pass between Yemen and Djibouti at the foot of the Red Sea — which is one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes and carries about a fifth of global oil consumption.“The threat of disruption to shipping in the wider region is likely to rise,” Torbjorn Soltvedt of the risk intelligence firm Verisk Maplecroft told AFP.“If security concerns compel shipping companies to avoid the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the result will be significantly higher costs due to the lack of alternative routes.”Mohammed al-Basha, senior Middle East analyst for the US-based Navanti Group, said the failure of Houthi missile and drone launches to hit targets inside Israel “might have influenced the decision to refocus on the Red Sea arena.”
