JEREMIAH 51:29-32
29 And
the land shall tremble and sorrow: for every purpose of the LORD shall
be performed against Babylon,(AMERICA-NEW YORK) to make the land of
Babylon (NEW YORK) a desolation without an inhabitant.
30 The mighty
men of Babylon (AMERICA) have forborn to fight, they have remained in
their holds: their might hath failed; they became as women: they have
burned her dwellingplaces; her bars are broken.
31 One post shall
run to meet another, and one messenger to meet another, to shew the king
of Babylon (NEW YORK) that his city is taken at one end,
32 And
that the passages are stopped,(THE WAR COMPUTERS HACKED OR EMP'D) and

affrighted.(DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO)
LEVITICUS 26:30-34 (NY IS BUILT ON A GARBAGE DUMP)
30
And I will destroy your high places, and cut down your images, and cast
your carcases upon the carcases of your idols, and my (GODS) soul shall
abhor you.
31 And I will make your cities waste,(GARBAGE-DESTROYED)
and bring your sanctuaries unto desolation, and I will not smell the
savour of your sweet odours.
32 And I will bring the land into desolation:(RUIN) and your enemies which dwell therein shall be astonished at it.
33
And I will scatter you among the heathen,(ENEMY NATIONS) and will draw
out a sword after you: and your land shall be desolate, and your cities
waste.
34 Then shall the land enjoy her sabbaths, as long as it
lieth desolate, and ye be in your enemies' land; even then shall the
land rest, and enjoy her sabbaths.
2 KINGS 19:25
25 Hast thou
not heard long ago how I have done it, and of ancient times that I have
formed it? now have I brought it to pass, that thou shouldest be to lay
waste fenced cities into ruinous heaps.
ISAIAH 34:10
10 It
(NEW YORK-POLITICAL BABYLON) shall not be quenched night nor day; the
smoke thereof shall go up for ever: from generation to generation it
shall lie waste; none shall pass through it for ever and ever.
EZEKIEL 39:21
21
And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall
see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon
them.
ISAIAH 18:1-2
1 Woe to the land shadowing with wings, which is beyond the rivers of Ethiopia:
2
That sendeth ambassadors by the sea, even in vessels of bulrushes upon
the waters, saying, Go, ye swift messengers, to a nation scattered and
peeled, to a people terrible from their beginning hitherto; a nation
meted out and trodden down, whose land the rivers have spoiled!(AMERICA)
JEREMIAH 50:11,37,12

Because ye were glad, because ye rejoiced, O ye destroyers of mine
heritage,(ISRAEL) because ye are grown fat as the heifer at grass, and
bellow as bulls;(BACKSLIDERS)
37 A sword is upon their horses, and
upon their chariots, and upon all the mingled people that are in the
midst of her; and they shall become as women: a sword is upon her
treasures; and they shall be robbed.(A NATION OF MINGLED PEOPLE)
12
Your mother (england) shall be sore confounded; she that bare you shall
be ashamed:(MOTHER ENGLAND) behold, the hindermost of the nations shall
be a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert.
JEREMIAH 51:13,7,53
13 O thou that dwellest upon many waters, abundant in treasures, thine end is come, and the measure of thy covetousness.
7
Babylon hath been a golden cup in the LORD's hand, that made all the
earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the
nations are mad.
53 Though Babylon (NEW YORK) should mount up to
heaven, and though she should fortify the height of her strength, yet
from me shall spoilers come unto her, saith the LORD.
REVELATION 18:3,5,7
3
For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication,
and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the
merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her
delicacies.
5 For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.
7
How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much
torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen,
and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.
JEREMIAH 50:3,24
3
For out of the north (RUSSIA) there cometh up a nation against her,
which shall make her land desolate, and none shall dwell therein: they
shall remove, they shall depart, both man and beast.
24 I have laid a
snare for thee, and thou art also taken, O Babylon,(NEW YORK) and thou
wast not aware: thou art found, and also caught, because thou hast
striven against the LORD. (RUSSIA A SNEAK ATTACK ON NEW YORK)
REVELATION 18:9-11,15-21
9
And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived
deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they
shall see the smoke of her burning,(NUKE ATTACK I BELIEVE FROM RUSSIA)
10
Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that
great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment
come.
11 And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more:
15
The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her, shall stand
afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing,
16 And
saying, Alas, alas that great city, (NEW YORK) that was clothed in fine
linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious
stones, and pearls!
17 For in one hour so great riches is come to
nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors,
and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
18 And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like unto this great city! (NEW YORK)
19
And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing,
saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had
ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she
made desolate.(1 HOUR NEW YORK IS GONE)
20 Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her.
21
And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it
into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon
(NEW YORK) be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.

BELIEVE SINCE JUDGEMENT ON NEW YORK COMES FROM THE SEA. I BELIEVE
RUSSIA WILL SHOOT 2 HYDROGEN BOMBS ON NEW YORK FROM A SUBMARINE. AND
NEW YORK WILL BE CAUGHT OFF GUARD. AND TOTALLY DESTROYED LIKE REV 18

ON NEW YORK.THEN IN 1 HOUR NEW YORK CAN BE GONE FOR GOOD.

OF THESE FAKE GUILTY CHARGES AGAINST TRUMP.
Donald
Trump was convicted on felony charges. Will he go to prison?-Trump was
convicted of falsifying business records, a class E felony which is
punishable by a fine, probation or up to four years in prison.Trump
found guilty on all counts in New York hush money case.May 30, 2024,
2:38 PM PDT-By Dareh Gregorian and Adam Reiss
A New York jury's
historic conviction of Donald Trump on felony charges means his fate is
now in the hands of the judge he's repeatedly ripped as "corrupt" and
"incompetent."Two experts told NBC News that it's unlikely Trump will be
imprisoned based on his age, lack of a criminal record and other
factors — and an analysis of thousands of cases found that very few
people charged with the same crime receive jail time. But a third expert
told NBC News he believes it is "substantially" likely Trump could end
up behind bars.Trump was convicted on 34 counts of falsifying business
records, a class E felony that is punishable by a fine, probation or up
to four years in prison per count. During the trial, Judge Juan Merchan
threatened to put Trump behind bars for violating his gag order, but
it’s unclear if the former president will face similar consequences now.
It's expected that any sentence on the charges would be imposed
concurrently, instead of consecutively.Former federal prosecutor Chuck
Rosenberg, an NBC News analyst, said it's unlikely that Merchan would
sentence Trump, 77, to any jail time, given his age and his status as a
first-time, nonviolent offender. "I’d be very surprised if there's any
sentence of incarceration at all," Rosenberg said. “Of course, he did
spend a good bit of time insulting the judge who has the authority to
incarcerate him.”The next step for Trump at this point is his
sentencing, which is set for July 11.Arthur Aidala, a former prosecutor
in the Brooklyn district attorney's office who's now a defense lawyer,
said the judge will likely use some of the time before sentencing to
research similar cases to determine what the median sentence is."He
wants to know before he sentences someone what the typical sentence is,"
Aidala said, and would consider other factors like Trump's age and lack
of criminal record, while also taking into account the lack of injury
caused by the crime. Aidala said he believes whatever punishment the
judge comes up with would be "a non-jail disposition."An analysis
conducted by Norm Eisen, who worked for House Democrats during Trump’s
first impeachment, found that roughly one in 10 people who have been
convicted of falsifying business records are imprisoned, and those cases
typically involved other crimes.Ron Kuby, a veteran New York criminal
defense lawyer, took a different view.“Judge Merchan is known for being a
harsh sentencer when it comes to white-collar crimes committed by
people who have wealth and privilege and power,” Kuby said.Kuby added
that he believes "it is substantially likely Judge Merchan will sentence
Trump to jail or prison time," despite the logistical and practical
complications that locking up a person with Secret Service protection
would entail. The lawyer said that's because the criminal scheme went on
for over a year, and included a number of bad acts on Trump's part.“It’s
an entire course of conduct he was involved with — not just one bad
decision,” Kuby said.Trump, however, likely doesn't have to worry about
missing the Republican National Convention, where he's expected to
accept the party's nomination, even though it's taking place just days
after his sentencing. Kuby said he'd likely be able to remain free while
he appeals the conviction.Trump's behavior during the trial, including
his flouting Merchan's gag order by making comments about witnesses and
the jury, will likely not be a factor in the sentencing decision, Kuby
said. It's also highly unlikely that comments that appeared to be aimed
at sidestepping the gag order by Republican officials who attended the
trial as Trump's guests will figure into the judge's reasoning, Kuby
added."If the judge is smart he'd stay away from that," Kuby said. "The
best way for judges not to get reversed in a sentencing is to stick to
the facts and circumstances of the crimes and conviction."Rosenberg said
that despite Trump’s frequent criticisms of the judge, which he likened
to “a batter who’s been yelling at the umpire from before the first
pitch,” Merchan appeared to run “a clean and fair trial.”Both Rosenberg
and Kuby agreed that Trump would appeal the verdict. Kuby said that
could potentially delay Trump from serving whatever punishment the judge
doles out for years, even if the appeal is ultimately unsuccessful. His
first appeal will be to the state Appellate Division, a midlevel appeals
court, and they will almost certainly not decide the appeal until after
the November election, Kuby said. If he loses there, he could then
appeal to the state's highest court, the Court of Appeals. A loss there
would be followed by a request to the U.S. Supreme Court to hear the
case.If all that fails, Kuby said, he could then try turning to federal
court in another attempt to eventually get the case before the Supreme
Court. The appeals process typically takes a long time — Kuby said he had
one client who staved off prison time for six years — but there's
another potential complicating factor in this case."If he becomes
president of the United States he cannot be incarcerated in a state
prison" while he's in office, Kuby said, because it could prevent him
from fulfilling his constitutional duties. If he lost his appeals, "by
the time he leaves office — if he leaves office — he'd be ready to be
incarcerated," he said.

DR SAMUEL DOCTORIANS VISION - SECOND ANGEL: MIDDLE EAST
Then
I saw that the second angel had a sickle in his hand, such as is used
in harvesting. The second angel said: "Harvest time has come in Israel
and the countries all the way to Iran."I saw those countries in a few
split seconds."All of Turkey and those [inaudible] countries that have
refused me and refused my message of love shall hate each other and kill
one another."I saw the angel raise the sickle and come down on all the
Middle East countries. I saw Iran, Persia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, all of
Georgia - Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, all of Asia Minor - full
of blood. I saw blood all over these countries. And I saw fire; Nuclear
weapons used in many of those countries. Smoke rising from everywhere.
Sudden destruction – men destroying one another. I heard these
words:"Israel, Oh Israel, the great judgment has come." The angel said,
"The chosen, the church, the remnant, shall be purified. The Spirit of
God shall prepare the children of God."I saw fires rising to heaven. The
angel said: "This is the final judgment. My church shall be purified,
protected and ready for the final day. Men will die from thirst. Water
shall be scarce all over the Middle East. Rivers shall dry up, and men
will fight for water in those countries."The angel showed me that the
United Nations shall be broken in pieces because of the crisis in the
Middle East. There shall be no more United Nations. The angel with the
sickle shall reap the harvest.
Mossad: Iran-backed criminal
networks behind attacks on Israeli embassies in Europe-Israeli and
European intelligence agencies find that Tehran is using local
organizations — including the Foxtrot and Rumba crime rings — to attack
Israeli and Jewish targets
By Lazar Berman-Today, 2:00 pm-MAY 30,24
Iran
is behind a string of terror attacks by criminal networks on Israeli
embassies in Europe since October 7, the Mossad intelligence agency said
on Thursday. The agency opened up an investigation alongside European
counterparts after an explosive device, said to be a hand grenade, was
found inside the grounds of the Israeli Embassy in Stockholm in January
and destroyed by the Swedish national bomb squad. After interrogating the
suspects and examining forensic evidence, the investigators concluded
that the Foxtrot organized crime ring in Sweden was behind the attack,
at Iran’s behest, according to the Mossad.Foxtrot leader Rawa Majid —
known as “the Kurdish Fox” — has been working with Iran for months,
Israel alleged. He was recruited by Iranian agents after he fled to Iran
from Turkey in September of last year, pursued by international law
enforcement and Iraqi security forces. He was arrested by Iran and
recruited to plan a string of attacks in Europe against Jewish and
Israeli targets, according to the Mossad. There have been dozens of
Iran-backed terror plots against Jewish and Israeli targets uncovered in
recent months, said the Israeli agency, many of which use local
criminal networks. On May 17, Swedish police heard gunshots late at night
near the Israeli embassy. They detained a 14-year-old boy in connection
to the shooting and made known that the Israeli embassy was the
target. That shooting was carried out by the Rumba crime group, said the
Mossad, headed by Majid’s rival Ismail Abdo and also directed by
Iran.Ismail Abdo, a Kurdish-Swedish criminal at the head of the Rumba
crime ring that Israel accuses of being behind Iran-backed attempts to
attacks Israeli and Jewish targets in Europe, May 2024.“Iran operates
many criminal organizations in Sweden and Europe in general, while
taking advantage of the relative advantage of each and sometimes the
rivalry between them,” said the Israeli statement.Foxtrot and Rumba
receive funding and direction directly from Iran, the Mossad alleged,
and are closely monitored by European intelligence. The spy agency also
accused Iran of trying to take advantage of rising antisemitism in
Europe while avoiding direct responsibility for attacks.“There is no
change in the travel warning levels in the various countries,” a Mossad
official said.“Countermeasures continue all the time wherever
necessary,” the official continued. The Mossad said that Iranian-backed
criminals were also behind last week’s attack on Israel’s embassy in
Belgium in which two airsoft grenades were thrown. The statement did not
mention the armed man who set fire to a synagogue in the northern French
city of Rouen earlier this month and was later killed by police. With
the Paris Olympics two months away — and the war in Gaza likely to
continue beyond the summer — French security services are on high alert
for possible terror attacks.AFP contributed to this report.
Cruise

IDF-Military says projectile intercepted in southern Golan Heights; no
injuries or damage reported; no claim of responsibility-By ToI Staff

Israeli air defenses shot down a
projectile fired at the southern Golan Heights “from the east,” the
Israel Defense Forces said Thursday. The army has described past attacks
from Iraq as “from the east.”The projectile had originally been thought
to be a drone and triggered sirens. No injuries or damage were caused in
the attack. There was no claim of responsibility from Iran-backed
militias in Iraq. The groups have claimed a number of drone attacks on
the southern city of Eilat in the last several months. The Islamic
Resistance in Iraq — a loose formation of armed groups affiliated with
the Popular Mobilization Forces, itself a coalition of former
paramilitary forces integrated into Iraq’s regular armed forces — has
claimed dozens of drone attacks on Israel amid the Israel-Hamas war in
Gaza.???? ISRAEL EN GUERRE: AUTORISÉ À LA PUBLICATION: Le Dôme de Fer

2024-Many of the militia’s claims have been exaggerated, but in one
case it managed to hit an Israeli Navy base in Eilat, causing damage.
The Iran-backed group said it had struck a “vital target” in Israel
“with appropriate weapons,” without elaborating further.Along with the
Islamic Resistance in Iraq, Iran-backed groups in Yemen and Syria have
claimed to have launched dozens of drones and missiles at Israel during
the ongoing war sparked by Hamas’s devastating October 7 terror
onslaught.Additionally, Lebanon’s Hezbollah has attacked communities and
IDF positions in northern Israel on a near-daily basis in attacks it
says are in support of Gazans amid Israel’s war against Hamas.Iran also
carried out an unprecedented attack on Israel last month with hundreds
of drones and missiles.
China’s Xi Jinping pledges UNRWA funding
in Gaza aid package at Arab leader summit-Chinese president calls for
international peace conference; Egypt’s Sissi praises Beijing’s
stance-By Agencies and ToI Staff Today, 3:07 pm-MAY 30,24
Chinese
President Xi Jinping reiterated calls for the establishment of an
independent Palestinian state and promised more humanitarian aid for
people in Gaza as he opened a summit with leaders of Arab states
Thursday in Beijing. The summit, attended by heads of state from the
United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Tunisia among others, was set to focus
on China’s expanding trade ties and on security concerns related to the
war in Gaza between Israel and the terror group Hamas.War erupted on
October 7, when thousands of terrorists led by Hamas burst into southern
Israel, killing some 1,200 people and seizing 252 hostages.“Since last
October, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has escalated drastically,
throwing people into tremendous suffering,” Xi said in a speech opening
the China-Arab States Cooperation Forum. “War should not continue
indefinitely.”The Chinese leader called for an international peace
conference for resolving the Israel-Hamas war and pledged 500 million
yuan ($69 million) in humanitarian aid for Gaza.He also promised to
donate $3 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, the
body responsible for much of the social services in Gaza. The United
States and Germany, UNRWA’s two biggest donors by far, froze their
contributions to the agency in January along with a host of other
western nations following allegations from Israel that some UNRWA staff
members were affiliated with Hamas and other terror groups.Germany
announced it would resume its contributions to UNRWA last week. A number
of other nations that froze their funding, including Italy, Spain,
Australia, and Japan, have also restored it.An independent review group
of UNRWA, led by French former foreign minister Catherine Colonna, found
some “neutrality-related issues” but said Israel had yet to provide
evidence for its allegation of widespread links to Hamas and other
terror groups.Beijing has long backed Palestinians and denounced Israel
over its settlements in the West Bank.It has not criticized the Hamas
attack of October 7, and has vetoed calls for a ceasefire at the UN that
make a pause in fighting contingent on Hamas’s releasing hostages. Last
month, the country hosted representatives from Hamas and rival
Palestinian faction Fatah for reconciliation efforts. However, China has
growing economic ties with Israel.Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah
el-Sissi, who spoke at the opening ceremony, praised China for
supporting an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the establishment of an
independent Palestinian state.Sissi called on the international
community to “stop any attempt at forcing Palestinians to forcibly flee
their land.” Egypt, which shares a border with Gaza and signed a
historic peace deal with Israel in 1978, has kept its border mostly
closed to Gazans fleeing the conflict.Sissi also called on the world to
“immediately provide for long term humanitarian assistance to the Gaza
Strip and to end the Israeli siege.”The comments came four days after
aid from Egypt began entering Gaza again through Israel’s Kerem Shalom
border crossing, under pressure from the United States. The Arab nation
had been blocking the passage of aid trucks through its own border with
Gaza after Israeli forces moved into the southern Gazan city of Rafah,
adjoining it.Israel said Wednesday it had gained “operational control”
over the strategic Philadelphi corridor along that border, which had
served as a buffer zone between Gaza and Egypt. The Hamas-run Gaza health
ministry says more than 35,000 people in the Strip have been killed or
are presumed dead in the fighting so far, though only some 24,000
fatalities have been identified at hospitals. The toll, which cannot be
verified, includes some 15,000 terror operatives Israel says it has
killed in battle. Israel also says it killed some 1,000 terrorists
inside Israel on October 7.It is believed that 121 hostages abducted by
Hamas on October 7 remain in Gaza — not all of them alive.

The Israeli military said Thursday that a soldier
was killed in Gaza fighting, as it continued to pound the Strip and said
300 terror operatives had been killed since an incursion was launched
into its southern city of Rafah.Staff Sgt. Yedidya Azugi, 21, of the
Paratrooper Brigade’s 101st Battalion, from Revava, was killed while
fighting Hamas in the northern Gaza Strip, the Israel Defense Forces
announced, raising the army’s death toll in Israel’s ground offensive in
Gaza to 292.The IDF said it had carried out over 50 airstrikes
throughout Gaza over the past day, including an attack that killed two
terror operatives seen leaving a building in northern Gaza where shells
had been launched toward Israeli troops. In northern Gaza, the army said
troops were continuing to operate in the heart of Jabaliya, where they
were finding weapons and engaging Gazan fighters attacking them.An AFP
correspondent reported artillery and gunfire in Gaza City’s southern
neighborhood of Zeitoun, where witnesses said thick plumes of smoke rose
over Jabaliya and Beit Lahiya.Troops were also operating in central
Gaza, where they found an arms cache, the IDF said.In the southern city
of Rafah, soldiers uncovered tunnel shafts, an ammunition depot,
anti-tank missile launchers, explosives, and other unspecified arms, the
IDF said Thursday. Also in Rafah, an airstrike was called in on three
terror operatives who opened fire on troops, and residents reported
intense artillery shelling and gunfire.Troops have killed around 300
terror operatives since the operation in Rafah was launched on May 6,
government spokesperson David Mencer said. The IDF also announced
Thursday that a booby-trapped tunnel shaft that killed three soldiers in
Rafah on Tuesday was located inside a medical clinic. The military said
that forces had come under anti-tank missile fire from an UNRWA school
in Rafah, and in response launched a raid against the building and an
adjacent mosque and clinic.During searches in the area, a booby-trapped
tunnel was discovered inside the clinic, which then exploded, killing
three soldiers of the Nahal Brigade’s 50th Battalion. The IDF said troops
also found a cache of weapons, as well as additional tunnel shafts,
inside the UNRWA school complex, including within the
classrooms.Meanwhile, terror groups in Gaza were showing they are still
capable of attacking Israeli territory, as rocket sirens were triggered
in Nirim near the Gaza border on Thursday morning.Army Radio reported
that a single projectile was launched from Khan Younis and landed in an
uninhabited area. The alarm was the first to sound in southern Israel
since a Tuesday night alert in Mefalsim. The IDF’s incursion into Rafah —
believed to be Hamas’s last major stronghold — has sparked
international controversy since over a million civilians had been
sheltering there before it was launched. However, after the military
announced that the Philadelphi Route along Gaza’s border with Egypt had
been captured, the US said it did not object to this.“When [Israel]
briefed us on their plans for Rafah, it did include moving along that
corridor and out of the city proper to put pressure on Hamas in the
city,” White House national security spokesman John Kirby told reporters
in a briefing.Kirby declined to confirm if Israel had indeed seized all
of the Philadelphi Route, saying: “It’s not our op.”However, he said
the move was consistent with the “limited” ground operation that Israeli
officials had briefed the US on ahead of time.US President Joe Biden
warned earlier this month that he would halt certain offensive weapons
shipments to Israel if the IDF launched a major military offensive in
populated parts of Gaza’s southernmost city.War broke out on October 7
between Israel and Hamas when Hamas terrorists infiltrated Israel,
killing some 1,200 people and kidnapping 252 while committing widespread
atrocities and sexual assaults. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says
more than 36,000 people in the Strip have been killed or are presumed
dead in the fighting so far, though only some 24,000 fatalities have
been identified at hospitals. The toll, which cannot be verified,
includes some 15,000 terror operatives Israel says it has killed in
battle. Israel also says it killed some 1,000 terrorists inside Israel
on October 7.Jacob Magid contributed to this report.
Gallant,
Austin discuss IDF's takeover of Gaza-Egypt border-Israel, Egypt said to
agree to reopen Rafah Crossing following US pressure-Palestinians
unaffiliated with Hamas to reportedly temporarily run crossing before
international body takes over; second report says US planning trilateral
meeting on border issues-By ToI Staff Today, 11:04 pm-may 30,24
Israel
and Egypt have agreed to reopen the Rafah Border Crossing in southern
Gaza to humanitarian aid for the first time since the Israel Defense
Forces took control of the Gazan side of the crossing in early May, a
Hebrew media report said Thursday. The agreement was reached as a result
of US pressure on both sides, the unsourced report by the Kan public
broadcaster added. The crossing has been closed since the IDF gained
control of its Gazan side on May 7, as Egypt said it would refuse to
reopen it until it was back under Palestinian control, in order to avoid
being seen as complicit with Israel’s military operation in the
southernmost Gaza city. On Sunday, Egypt resumed aid deliveries via the
Kerem Shalom Crossing on the tri-border area between Israel, Gaza and
Egypt.According to Kan, Israel agreed to remove its troops from the
crossing to allow for it to be reopened, and has attempted to find an
international body to take responsibility for it instead. However, as a
body has not yet been found, Israel has reportedly agreed to temporarily
allow the border crossing to be controlled by Palestinians in Gaza who
have been proven to have no ties to Hamas or other terror groups. An
Axios report earlier in the day said Israel had presented Cairo with its
plan to redeploy its forces outside the crossing to defend it, while
representatives from the United Nations and Palestinians unaffiliated
with Hamas in Gaza would operate it.The US aims to hold a trilateral
meeting with Egyptian and Israeli security officials in Cairo next week
on issues surrounding the Gaza-Egypt border and the Rafah Crossing,
according to the report, which cited three unnamed US and Israeli
officials. The US delegation will reportedly be led by the senior
director for the Middle East at the White House National Security
Council, Terry Wolff. In addition to solving issues regarding the Rafah
Crossing, the meeting will also focus on ensuring that Hamas can no
longer smuggle weapons into the Gaza Strip from Egypt, the report said.
US officials said an underground wall to block tunnels, similar to one
built on the Israel-Gaza border, would be discussed in the meeting.“An
initial interagency delegation will travel to Egypt to follow up on the
call between [US] President [Joe] Biden and [Egyptian] President [Abdel
Fattah el-] Sissi for further discussions on the Rafah Border Crossing
and border security,” a senior US official said, referencing a call held
on Friday between the two leaders, and adding that a senior-level
delegation would continue the talks later on.Maintaining the tenuous
peace between Israel and Egypt is a top priority for Biden, the Axios
report said, as his administration sees Egypt as a key player in any
plans for post-war Gaza.Egypt itself has worked for years to thwart the
cross-border tunnel network, blowing them up, flooding them with water,
pumping toxic gas inside, and even razing homes along the border to
establish a buffer zone. However, many are still believed to remain. The
IDF announced Wednesday that it had taken control over the Philadelphi
Route, the key Gaza-Egypt border corridor, saying it had uncovered at
least 20 cross-border smuggling tunnels, In response, the Egyptian
state-affiliated Al-Qahera News TV quoted a “high-level” source saying
that there was “no truth” to the reports of tunnels between Egypt and
Gaza.Meanwhile, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant briefed US Defense
Secretary Lloyd Austin during a call Wednesday night on the IDF’s
successful operation to take over the Philadelphi Route, their offices
said. The Pentagon said Austin stressed the “need to sustain increased
deliveries of humanitarian assistance” and reopen the Rafah
Crossing.“Our humanitarian partners working in Gaza tell us that
conditions are worse now than ever before. Israeli military operations
and closed crossings are making it extremely difficult to distribute
aid,” US Agency for International Development chief Samantha Power wrote
on X on Wednesday night. In an Israeli readout of the Gallant-Austin
call, Gallant’s office said the defense minister had stressed to Austin
Israel’s opposition to the crossing being run by Hamas or any officials
linked to terror groups.
At least 12 arrested as riot police
dismantle anti-Israel camp at Detroit university-Wayne State University
head says protest created ‘environment of exclusion’ in which some
students ‘felt unwelcome’; staff told to work remotely; in-person summer
classes suspended-By AP and ToI Staff Today, 9:28 pm-may 30,24
American
police broke up an anti-Israel encampment at Wayne State University
(WSU) in Detroit on Thursday, arresting at least 12 people after protest
organizers turned down offers to meet with school officials and refused
to leave.WSU University President Kimberly Andrews Espy cited health
and safety concerns and disruptions to campus operations. Staff were
encouraged to work remotely this week, and in-person summer classes were
suspended.“No individual or group is permitted to claim campus property
for their own use and deny others access to that property,” Espy
said. The camp, she added, “created an environment of exclusion — one in
which some members of our campus community felt unwelcome and unable to
fully participate in campus life.”Critics of the student protest
encampments that sprung up on university campuses since the outbreak of
Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza have cited viral episodes of outright
antisemitism as evidence of a widespread problem. The encampments’
proponents — including some Jewish students — have insisted that
antisemitic attitudes and rhetoric are rare.Television video showed
Wayne State and Detroit police in riot gear tearing down fencing and
breaking down tents erected May 23 on green space near the undergraduate
library. Clips posted to social media showed violent arrests, with
protesters hurling verbal abuse at officers in riot gear. The protesters
chanted: “There’s no riot here, why are you in riot gear?”At least 12
people were arrested for trespassing or other offenses, including one
for assaulting a police officer, Wayne State spokesperson Matt Lockwood
said.Anti-Israel students at universities in the US and in Europe have
demanded their universities stop doing business with Israel or companies
that they say support its war against Hamas in Gaza.Wayne State has
16,000 undergraduate students but fewer during the summer term. The
protesters have demanded that the school divest from weapons
manufacturers supplying Israel, provide a full disclosure of investments
and cease delegation trips to Israel.Wayne State this week posted a
video of its efforts to invite protesters to private meetings with Espy
and other officials if they would dismantle the camp. Lockwood said all
were rejected.US Rep. Rashida Tlaib, a Michigan Democrat who is of
Palestinian origin, visited the encampment site Thursday after it was
broken up to offer support to the protesters.Ali Hassan, who represents
WSU Students for Justice in Palestine, told WXYZ-TV this week that he
believed the university’s shift to remote learning means the
administration is taking notice of the student protests.“The reason that
they went remote is because we have put pressure on them,” he said. The
University of Michigan in Ann Arbor on May 21 broke up a similar
encampment after 30 days, after student demonstrators showed up at the
home of a school official and placed fake body bags on her lawn. The war
in Gaza erupted after Hamas’s October 7 massacre, which saw some 3,000
terrorists burst across the border into Israel by land, air and sea,
killing some 1,200 people and seizing 252 hostages, mostly civilians,
many amid acts of brutality and sexual assault.
Israel also says it killed some 1,000 terrorists
inside Israel on October 7.A total of 292 soldiers have been killed
during the ground offensive against Hamas and amid operations along the
Gaza border. A civilian Defense Ministry contractor has also been killed
in the Strip.
US envoy Hochstein envisions Israel-Lebanon border
deal in bid to cool conflict-Senior Biden adviser says he doesn’t
expect peace with Hezbollah, but argues that boosting Lebanon’s economy
and armed forces would decrease Iranian influence in country
By Reuters and ToI Staff Today, 10:11 pm-may 30.24
WASHINGTON
— A land border agreement between Israel and Lebanon implemented in
phases could dampen the simmering and deadly conflict between the Jewish
state and the Iran-backed Hezbollah terror group, a senior adviser to
US President Joe Biden said on Thursday.Clashes between Israel and
Hezbollah across the Israel-Lebanon border have led to worries of a
deeper war across the Middle East. Since October 8, Hezbollah-led forces
have attacked Israeli communities and military posts along the border
on a near-daily basis, with the group saying it is doing so to support
Gaza amid the war there against the Palestinian terror group Hamas.“I’m
not expecting peace, everlasting peace, between Hezbollah and Israel,”
Amos Hochstein, a senior adviser to Biden for energy and investment,
said in an interview with the Carnegie Endowment for International
Peace.“But if we can reach a set of understandings and… take away some
of the impetus for conflict and establish for the first time ever a
recognized border between the two, I think that will go a long
way.”Hochstein brokered an Israel-Lebanon maritime boundary agreement in
late 2022, after two years of talks, which opened the way for both
countries to develop natural gas and other resources in the region.
Hochstein has been working on a demarcation of the land border between
the two countries that could have a number of phases. The first would be
to allow for tens of thousands of displaced residents of northern
communities in Israel to return to their homes, along with those living
in southern communities in Lebanon, Hochstein said.Part of that would
require a strengthening of the Lebanese armed forces, including
recruiting, training and equipping forces, Hochstein said, without
detailing how that would happen. As it stands, Hezbollah’s military
might far outweighs the army’s.The second phase would involve an
economic package for Lebanon, “making sure that the international
community demonstrates to the Lebanese people that we’re invested in
them.”Lebanon’s power grid, for example, only operates a few hours per
day, at an enormous detriment to its economy. “We have a solution for
that, we’ve put together a package that could create a solution that
would take them to 12 hours of electricity in a… short amount of time,”
Hochstein said. The last phase would be a land boundary agreement between
Lebanon and Israel, he said.If politics and the economy are stabilized
in Lebanon, it could help reduce Iran’s influence there, he argued.“The
ability of outside forces of any consequence to influence Lebanon will
diminish dramatically,” Hochstein said.So far, the skirmishes on the
border have resulted in 10 civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well
as the deaths of 14 IDF soldiers and reservists. There have also been
several attacks from Syria, without any injuries.Hezbollah has named 322
members who have been killed by Israel during the ongoing skirmishes,
mostly in Lebanon but some also in Syria. In Lebanon, another 62
operatives from other terror groups, a Lebanese soldier, and dozens of
civilians have been killed.Israel has expressed openness to a diplomatic
solution to the conflict but has said it would launch an all-out war
against Hezbollah to restore security to the north if an agreement isn’t
reached.
PM has publicly opposed far-right push to govern
Strip-Poll: Half of Jewish Israelis say Israel should run Gaza after the
war; 0% say Hamas-Survey conducted in March finds only 19% of Israeli
Jews believe peaceful coexistence possible with Palestinian state —
lowest since Pew Institute began polling Israelis in 2013-By Jacob
Magid-and JTA Today, 9:25 pm-may 30,24
Fifty percent of Israeli
Jews support Israel maintaining control of the Gaza Strip after the war
against the Hamas terror group ends, according to a Pew Research Center
survey published Thursday.Asked who should govern the Palestinian
enclave after the war, half of Jewish respondents said Israel; 15% said
they didn’t know; 10% said the Palestinian Authority, but without its
president, Mahmoud Abbas; 8% said people who live in Gaza should decide;
7% answered “other”; 5% said the PA with Abbas; 4% said the United
Nations; and zero percent said Hamas.Among Arab Israeli respondents, 37%
said people who live there should decide; 18% said the PA without Abbas
should rule; 16% said they didn’t know; 11% said the PA with Abbas; 9%
said Hamas; 5% said the United Nations; 3% said Israel; and 2% said
“other.”Among all Israeli respondents, 40% said Israel; 16% said they
didn’t know; 14% said Gazans should decide; 12% said the PA without
Abbas; 6% said the PA with Abbas; 6% said “other”; 4% said the UN; and
2% said Hamas. The major caveat of the survey was that it was conducted
between March 3 and April 4, finishing nearly two months ago, likely
making many of the results outdated. But even if the results are several
months old, they are notable given that Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu has come out against the idea of Israel governing Palestinians
in Gaza after the war — a prospect vehemently rejected by the
international community.Only far-right ministers like Bezalel Smotrich
and Itamar Ben Gvir have come out in support of Israel permanently
controlling the Gaza Strip and reestablishing settlements there, but the
Pew survey indicates support for their stance may be more widespread
among Israeli Jews than originally thought. The survey also finds that
the share of Israeli Jews who believe an Israeli and a Palestinian state
can peacefully coexist has plummeted since October 7, when thousands of
Hamas-led terrorists stormed southern Israeli communities and army
positions, killing around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking 252
hostages. The figure of 19% was the lowest since Pew started surveying
Israelis in 2013. It is down from 32% in a survey released just weeks
before the war broke out.In 2013, according to Pew, nearly half of
Israeli Jews — and a majority of Israelis overall — supported a
two-state solution. In 2005, another polling firm found that most
Israeli Jews supported the establishment of a Palestinian state. This
year, just a quarter of Israeli adults overall — including nearly half
of Israeli Arabs — believe a Palestinian state and Israel can
peacefully exist side-by-side.Among Arab Israelis, 74% say “Israel’s
military response against Hamas in Gaza has gone too far.” Only 4% of
Jewish Israelis agree. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than
36,200 people in the Strip have been killed or are presumed dead in the
fighting so far, though only some 24,000 fatalities have been identified
at hospitals. The toll, which cannot be verified, includes some 15,000
terror operatives Israel says it has killed in battle. Two hundred and
ninety-two soldiers have been killed during the ground offensive against
Hamas and amid operations along the Gaza border. A civilian Defense
Ministry contractor has also been killed in the Strip. And while 76% of
Jewish Israelis believe Israel will achieve its goals in the war —
namely, toppling Hamas’s rule in Gaza and returning the remaining
hostages — only half as many Arab Israelis, 38%, say the same. But
Israeli Arabs and Jews share some of the same concerns about the war:
61% of both groups are worried about the war spreading to other fronts —
a concern that has been top-of-mind for many in the region and beyond
after constant exchanges of fire between Israel and Hezbollah in
Lebanon, the first direct attacks between Iran and Israel, and violence
on other fronts. And at a time when National Security Adviser Tzachi
Hanegbi has said he anticipates the war will last until at least the end
of this year, the poll found that significant majorities of both groups
(77% of Arabs, 66% of Jews) are worried about the war “lasting a long
time.”One thousand and one Israeli adults participated in the in-person
survey, which included a representative population of Jews and Arabs. It
had a margin of error of four percentage points. In addition to being
taken before the launch of the Rafah operation, the poll was conducted
before other landmark developments of recent weeks — including a
prosecutor for the International Criminal Court announcing he was
seeking Netanyahu’s arrest and US President Joe Biden saying that he
would suspend delivery of some large bombs to Israel in a bid to
influence the scope of Israel’s Rafah invasion. But even before those
events, the poll showed disapproval of Biden’s handling of the war
rising in Israel. Biden was broadly popular among Israelis for his
embrace of the country following October 7, but by the time the poll was
taken, 60% of Israeli Jews — and 86% of Israeli Arabs — said they did
not approve of how he was handling the war. Also unpopular was Netanyahu
who, the poll found, had a lower favorability rating than at any point
in the 11 years Pew has asked the question, at 41%. The two other
leaders in his war cabinet, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and former
Defense Minister Benny Gantz, fared better, with Gantz at 51% and
Gallant at 61%.A more recent poll shows that Netanyahu’s popularity,
which nosedived after October 7, is somewhat recovering among the
Israeli public.
Slovenian government okays decision to recognize
Palestinian state alongside Israel-Slovenian PM calls for ceasefire,
release of hostages; parliament must approve measure; FM Israel Katz
casts move as reward for Hamas terror-by Reuters and ToI Staff Today,
7:23 pm-may 30,24
LJUBLJANA — The Slovenian government on
Thursday approved a decision to recognize an independent Palestinian
state, Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob said, following in the
steps of Spain, Ireland and Norway.“Today the government has decided to
recognize Palestine as an independent and sovereign state,” he said at a
news conference in Ljubljana. The parliament of the European Union
member country must also approve the government’s decision in the coming
days. The move is part of a wider effort by countries to coordinate
pressure on Israel to end its war against Hamas in Gaza, which began
following the October 7 massacre carried out by the terror group in
southern Israel, when Hamas terrorists infiltrated Israel, killing some
1,200 people and kidnapping 252 while committing widespread atrocities
and sexual assaults. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than
36,000 people in the Strip have been killed or are presumed dead in the
fighting so far, though only some 24,000 fatalities have been identified
at hospitals. The toll, which cannot be verified, includes some 15,000
terror operatives Israel says it has killed in battle. Israel also says
it killed some 1,000 terrorists inside Israel on October 7.Two hundred
and ninety-two soldiers have been killed during the ground offensive
against Hamas and amid operations along the Gaza border. A civilian
Defense Ministry contractor has also been killed in the Strip.Golob also
called for the immediate cessation of hostilities between Israel and
Hamas in Gaza and the release of all hostages.“This is the message of
peace,” he said. The Slovenian government raised a Palestinian flag
alongside the flags of Slovenia and the EU in front of its building in
downtown Ljubljana.Foreign Minister Israel Katz expressed outrage over
the move, stating that it “rewards Hamas for murder, rape, mutilation of
bodies, beheading of babies, and strengthens the Iranian axis of evil
while damaging the close friendship between the Slovenian and Israeli
people.”“I hope the Slovenian Parliament rejects this recommendation,”
he wrote on X.On May 28, Spain, Ireland and Norway officially recognized
a Palestinian state, also prompting an angry reaction from Israel.Of
the 27 members of the European Union, Sweden, Cyprus, Hungary, the Czech
Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria have already
recognized a Palestinian state. Malta has said it could follow
soon.Britain and Australia have said they are also considering
recognition, but France has said now is not the time.Germany joined
Israel’s staunchest ally, the United States, in rejecting a unilateral
approach, insisting that a two-state solution can only be achieved
through dialogue.Denmark’s parliament on Tuesday voted down a bill to
recognize a Palestinian state.Norway, which chairs the international
donor group to the Palestinians, had until recently followed the US
position but has lost confidence that this strategy will work.

Day 237 of the war-503 Israelis give Netanyahu reason to believe he can
retain power, despite October 7-For the first time in more than a year,
Netanyahu is again voters’ preferred PM, according to a snap survey.
You can be certain that he takes it seriously. Here’s why we all
should-By David Horovitz-Today, 5:41 pm-may 30,24
will go down as
the day when Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was first vindicated in
his belief that he could extricate himself from the catastrophe of
October 7, 2023, and retain power. For the first time in a year, a snap
survey by Channel 12 found that Netanyahu had overtaken Benny Gantz and
was, once again, respondents’ preferred choice for prime minister. In a
survey in December by the same polling firm for the same TV channel,
Gantz had been preferred to Netanyahu by a massive 45% to 27% of
respondents. As recently as last month, though the gap had gradually
been narrowing, Gantz was still ahead, by 35% to 29%. But on Wednesday
night, Netanyahu overtook him, 36% to 30%.-The findings-Israelis don’t
vote for a prime minister, but rather for a party, which they hope will
become a dominant faction in the next governing coalition. Here too,
however, Wednesday night’s survey was good news for Netanyahu. His Likud
party, it showed, is gaining on Gantz’s National Unity, with 21
predicted seats to Gantz’s 25 were elections held today.Again, the trend
has been inexorable: In its December survey, Channel 12 noted, Gantz’s
National Unity was trouncing Netanyahu’s Likud, by 37 seats to 18. That,
in turn, meant that Gantz was blessed with a variety of options for
fashioning a majority coalition. Netanyahu’s bloc, comprising the
parties with which he formed his coalition after the November 2022
elections — Likud, the two Haredi parties Shas and United Torah Judaism,
and the two far-right parties Otzma Yehudit and Religious Zionism — is
polling at a combined 52 seats, far short of a Knesset majority. But the
anti-Netanyahu parties who together hold the other 68 seats do not
constitute a unified bloc.For a start, Hadash-Ta’al, a majority-Arab
party polling at 5 seats, would be unlikely to join any conceivable
coalition. And while Ra’am, a second majority-Arab party, also polling
at 5, did sit in the short-lived Naftali Bennett-Yair Lapid 2021-2022
coalition, its presence would be unacceptable to at least one of the
other anti-Netanyahu parties, Avigdor Liberman’s hardline Yisrael
Beytenu, which is polling at 10 seats. One way or another, therefore,
the ostensible 68-strong anti-Netanyahu parties could in practice likely
muster a bloc of only 58.So Netanyahu, as things stand, could not build
a majority coalition, but neither could anybody else. There are
innumerable other shifts and surprises that could come into play,
including the establishment of a new right-wing alliance with the likes
of Bennett and the fairly unpopular ex-Likud journeyman Gideon Sa’ar.
But, the momentum is with the incumbent. The reasons-Channel 12’s
reasonable assessment of its own snap poll was that Gantz’s decline is
tied to the ultimatum he publicly delivered on May 18: Either Netanyahu
starts putting the national interest ahead of his personal and political
considerations, and starts defining strategic goals for the war, its
aftermath and much more besides by June 8, or, Gantz vowed, his National
Unity party would leave the emergency coalition it had joined days
after October 7.Since Gantz’s rise in the polls was widely regarded as
reflecting public support for his ostensible statesmanship in joining
the government at a time of acute national crisis, his threat to abandon
the partnership is now unsurprisingly costing him that support. If
you’re no longer being selflessly statesmanlike, or if, as you yourself
are saying, you are no longer able to influence the coalition, some
erstwhile Gantz backers are presumably asking, then why should we be
supporting you? Apart from that, however, the specific horror of October
7 is now almost eight months in the past. Right now, today, minute by
minute, Israel is deep in ongoing conflict with Hamas, trying to
extricate 121 hostages held since October 7, facing acute dangers in the
north, and battling innumerable other challenges.Much of the public is
highly critical of Netanyahu’s handling of many of these issues. But his
biggest vulnerability was the fact of his presiding over the
unprecedented catastrophe of October 7 and the Hamas-funding policies
and other actions that failed to prevent it. With that catastrophe’s
current, continued dire repercussions at the very top of the national
mindset, the simple passage of time has been gradually working to
Netanyahu’s advantage. Moreover, the events of October 7 and since are
highly unlikely to have sent large numbers of Israeli voters careening
from right to left on the national political spectrum:Belief in the
viability of a partnership with the Palestinian Authority is probably at
an all-time low. The dangers of relinquishing territory in the
ostensible cause of peace have been underlined as never before by the
Hamas invasion — from a Gaza Strip that Israel had left in 2005 and
where it had no military or civilian presence and, it wanted to believe,
no territorial dispute. Likewise, Hezbollah took control of the
security zone that Israel evacuated in southern Lebanon to international
approval in 2000, and now 60,000 people are internally displaced from
their homes on and near that border. What’s more, hundreds of thousands
of Israelis have been fighting in Gaza for almost eight months — members
of the standing army and of the reserves. For combat troops, potential
death lurks at every corner; every footstep could be their last. It’s a
case of kill the Hamas enemy or the Hamas enemy is going to kill you.
How does that warrior’s necessary kill-or-be-killed mindset impact these
soldiers’ political thinking and orientation? What proportion of them
and their loved ones are becoming more dovish? Almost certainly a
smaller proportion than are emerging more hawkish. There are many
Israelis risking their lives fighting in Gaza who know that Hamas must
be dismantled, the hostages freed, Hezbollah deterred and national
security restored, but who are deeply alienated from the government that
is sending them. They and their loved ones recognize that the coalition
features far-right betrayers of Zionism who seek to destroy Israel’s
Jewish and democratic nature, to permanently reoccupy Gaza and the
entire biblical Judea and Samaria, too. But, again, one suspects that
this large and anguished sector of the populace is not attracting
significant new adherents from the right — as Wednesday’s poll would
seem to confirm. The Netanyahu-led coalition not only failed to read the
writing on the wall ahead of October 7, but has proved staggeringly
dysfunctional in the eight months since. As Gantz and Likud Defense
Minister Yoav Gallant have publicly charged, Netanyahu has resisted
making vital strategic decisions, including on postwar governance of
Gaza, because he dares not defy the would-be Gaza-occupying Bezalel
Smotrich and Itamar Ben Gvir on whom his governing majority
depends.Israel’s citizens on the southern and northern borders, and its
vast contingent of reservists, have been failed by many of the
ministerial offices whose job it is to look after them. Miri Regev’s
strategic, cynical and documented abuse of the Transportation Ministry
as a tool for her personal career advancement is only the most extreme
alleged example of ministerial abandonment of the basic responsibility
to serve the needs of the public.Against all this, Netanyahu is
bolstered by a powerhouse media and social media operation that
besmirches and incites against any and all potential opponents and
rivals, and that has been sinking to still lower lows in just the past
few days — with the prime minister’s son Yair disseminating a mutiny
call against the defense establishment, and his pet TV station Channel
14 on Wednesday producing repugnant “research” to assert that being
left-wing made you ten times more likely to be slaughtered or abducted
on October 7. (“We, within our midst, risk destroying Israel,” responded
a despairing Haim Jelin, a former local council head and ex-Yesh Atid
MK from Kibbutz Be’eri, where Hamas killed 103 people. “I thought that
[Hamas] came to murder Jews, Israelis, in the State of Israel, in our
homes… but apparently there are those who think we should divide the
people into small pieces.”)-Channel 12’s poll was carried out in the
course of Wednesday by phone and by internet, among just 503
representative voters, with a 4.4% margin of error. As such, it is no
more credible than any of the other polls carried out by the same firm,
Midgam, for the same channel in recent months, which used the same
methods and voter samples, with the same margins of error, or any of the
other such snap polls carried out for numerous Israeli media outlets
over the years. It could prove an outlier, its findings never
replicated. But polls do reflect momentum, they do impact the electorate,
and they affect the climate in which politicians make their
decisions.Netanyahu’s opponents, first and foremost Benny Gantz, will
recognize that their hopes, even expectations, of ousting him just took a
significant hit.And the prime minister, who has never acknowledged his
paramount personal responsibility for October 7, will see Wednesday’s
survey as indicating he is now well on the way to winning back enough of
the public to keep his job.
Findings ‘based on systematic
effort’ to ignore boosted aid-Key Gaza famine report cited by UN, ICJ
has systematic flaws, Israeli review finds-Health Ministry review finds
series of grave methodological flaws in Integrated Food Security Phase
Classification report from March, which was cited as proof Israel
starving Gazans-By Jeremy Sharon-31 May 2024, 12:33 am-may 30,24
A
crucial study by a key international organization that found in March
that a famine had begun in northern Gaza relied on small sample sizes
and undisclosed data sources, rendering its conclusions and projections
unreliable, an Israeli review has found. The Health Ministry review of
the study — which has been cited by the UN, human rights organizations
and even by the International Court of Justice in its genocide case
against Israel — also found that there appeared to have been “a
consistent effort to ignore… a significant decline in the war’s
intensity and a significant increase in the humanitarian effort and the
flow of aid” when making its famine projections. On March 18, the
Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) organization issued a
“Special Brief” on the food insecurity situation in the Gaza Strip,
finding that hundreds of thousands of people were already experiencing
famine and that that figure would rise to over a million by July if
there was no immediate cessation of hostilities. The IPC — which is
connected to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN — is seen
as a neutral and highly credible organization for evaluating where
famines might be occurring around the globe. Its assessment in March that
famine had already taken hold in parts of Gaza and was likely to spread
was explicitly cited and accepted by the International Court of Justice
(ICJ) in its March 28 ruling and was used as the basis for its specific
order for Israel to increase the supply of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
That order was recalled in the ICJ’s ruling last week when it issued new
orders against Israel. And International Criminal Court Prosecutor Karim
Khan has filed crimes against humanity charges against Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant based on the
allegation that Israel is using starvation as a weapon of war against
the Gazan population, a claim which is also likely connected to the IPC
finding. However, the Health Ministry review, authored by public health
officials in the ministry and published by the Foreign Ministry on
Wednesday, found significant flaws in the methodology of the IPC Special
Brief and notably found that it had deviated from IPC’s standards and
principles as laid out by the organization itself.According to the
review, the IPC report, which covered the period from December 21, 2023,
until March 10, 2024, failed to acknowledge the increase in the supply
of humanitarian aid during that time; repeatedly cited unreliable and
unrepresentative surveys of Gazans regarding their level of food
security; and did not provide any statistics on the mortality rate from
malnutrition, as would be expected to occur in a famine and as is IPC’s
practice in evaluating famine. It also allegedly used data on physical
manifestations of malnutrition from undisclosed sources and gathered in
an undisclosed manner, and ignored positive trends on the ground such as
the withdrawal of Israeli forces and the intensity of combat operations
when making its projection of worsening famine. The Health Ministry
review said that the next IPC report on Gaza, which is expected to be
published in June, “should avoid repeating these failures and include an
acknowledgment and a correction of mistakes made in the previous
report.”The IPC did not respond to a request for comment. The IPC report
published on March 18 stated that there were already 677,000 Gazans at
the Phase 5 Catastrophe level of food insecurity, projecting that number
to grow to 1,107,000 between March 16 and July 15.But its report, and
the projections off which it was based, did not acknowledge that the
Kerem Shalom goods crossing was opened in December or the subsequent
increase in the number of humanitarian aid trucks entering the territory
per day. It also made no mention of the air drops of food to northern
Gaza; the opening of goods crossings into northern Gaza, where food
insecurity was allegedly most acute; or the opening of 20 bakeries
throughout the Gaza Strip, providing over 2 million pita breads per
day.The projection for northern Gaza and Gaza City was also based on
what turned out to have been a false assumption that from March to July,
the “conflict and related casualties will likely continue at similar
levels to January-February 2024.”The projection was also founded on an
assumption that northern Gaza would likely be “mostly inaccessible and
intermittently hard-to-reach” for humanitarian aid, despite the fact
that Israel was already at the time of the report working on increasing
humanitarian access to that region. Since that time, three goods
crossings have been opened between Israel and northern Gaza, further
increasing supply capacity. It appears likely that the failure to take
into account these developments helped contribute to the dire
projections in the IPC’s March report.Another key methodological concern
with the IPC report pointed out by the Health Ministry review was the
lack of transparency about the reliability of the surveys cited in the
report. The IPC’s analysis of the situation in northern Gaza relied
heavily on a phone survey carried out by the World Food Program (WFP)
conducted between December 2023 and February 2024, which included a very
small sample of just 104 observations in that time frame for northern
Gaza.“According to the survey, most households across the Gaza Strip
have inadequate food consumption with almost 88 percent of households in
the North reporting Poor Food consumption (indicative of IPC Phase 4
and 5, Emergency and Catastrophe),” the IPC Special Brief said, despite
the survey having such a small sample size .Similarly, a finding that
there was just half a liter of drinking water per person per day in the
Deir al-Balah governorate was based on a telephone survey of a mere 34
households. The IPC report also said that “widespread weight loss,
diseases, and malnutrition prevail due to insufficient food supplies,”
but based that assertion on interviews conducted by the WFP “with eight
key informants” in January, although it did not say who those informants
were.Another key aspect of the Special Brief was an analysis of data on
a key physical indicator of malnutrition, called Middle Upper Arm
Circumference (MUAC) screenings. The IPC findings on the MUAC screenings
were based on a “reanalysis conducted by the Global Smart Team” from
data collected from “various” sources. The International Court of Justice
(ICJ) holds a hearing on South Africa’s request that the court order
Israel to halt its military operation in Gaza, May 24, 2024. The ICJ has
explicitly cited a report by the Integrated Food Security Phase
Classification (IPC) organization from March that a famine had taken
hold in northern Gaza and was spreading as the basis for one of its
orders against Israel instructing it to increase humanitarian aid to
Gaza. (Nick Gammon/AFP)-“There is no reference to the ‘reanalysis’
which can be reviewed, nor is it clear whether the raw data also came
from Hamas’s Ministry of Health or other sources,” the Health Ministry
review noted. The IPC Special Brief also indicated uncertainty as to
whether data from sampling in February was taken from children who were
sick, which would be of critical importance since the findings of famine
in northern Gaza were based on a deterioration in MUAC results over a
January sample.Another problem found by the Health Ministry review was
that the IPC report stated that its “analysis could not benefit from
representative evidence of non-trauma mortality as intended by IPC
Protocols.” But in its summary of the report it stated that there was
“an upward trend in non-trauma mortality,” which it said was expected to
accelerate, “resulting in all famine thresholds likely to be passed
imminently.”
Given the lack of non-trauma mortality data, the Health
Ministry review said it “remains unknown” what the finding of increasing
numbers of such deaths was based on.The Health Ministry review said in
summary that a connecting thread between many of the shortcomings of the
IPC’s March report appeared to be “a systematic and consistent effort
to ignore” the significant decline in the war’s intensity and a
significant increase in the supply of humanitarian effort between the
IPC’s December and March reports.“Any analysis or projection that
ignores those trends is deeply misleading,” the Health Ministry review
said, adding that the absence of references to publicly available
sources for key figures and studies cited in the Special Brief — which
therefore cannot be independently assessed — was “inconsistent with the
requirement for transparency and accessibility of data defined in the
IPC manual.”The Health Ministry review added that “the next IPC report
on Gaza, which is expected to be published in early-mid June, should
avoid repeating these failures and include an acknowledgment and a
correction of mistakes made in the previous report.”
