THE CRAZY WORLD IS STILL TRYING TO POKE GOD IN THE EYE WITH THIS USELESS WASTE OF TIME ISRAEL HATE CEASEFIRE.

WEEK OF DANIEL 9:27 WE KNOW ITS 7 YRS

The King of Jerusalem[1] was the supreme ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, the Crusader state founded by Christian princes in 1099 when the First Crusade took the city.Godfrey of Bouillon, the first ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, himself refused the title of king, and instead chose the title "Defender of the Holy Sepulchre". Thus, the title of king was only introduced for his successor, King Baldwin I in 1100. The city of Jerusalem was lost in 1187, but the Kingdom of Jerusalem survived (also known as the "Second Kingdom of Jerusalem"), moving its capital to Acre in 1191. The city of Jerusalem was re-captured in the Sixth Crusade, during 1229–39 and 1241–44. The Kingdom of Jerusalem was finally dissolved with the fall of Acre and the end of the Crusades in the Holy Land in 1291.After the Crusader States ceased to exist, the title of King of Jerusalem was claimed by a number of European noble houses descended from the kings of Cyprus or the kings of Naples. The (purely ceremonial) title of King of Jerusalem is currently used by Felipe VI of Spain. It was claimed by Otto von Habsburg as Habsburg pretender, and by the kings of Italy until 1946.

14 Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.

DR SAMUEL DOCTORIANS VISION - SECOND ANGEL: MIDDLE EAST
Then I saw that the second angel had a sickle in his hand, such as is used in harvesting. The second angel said: "Harvest time has come in Israel and the countries all the way to Iran."I saw those countries in a few split seconds."All of Turkey and those [inaudible] countries that have refused me and refused my message of love shall hate each other and kill one another."I saw the angel raise the sickle and come down on all the Middle East countries. I saw Iran, Persia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, all of Georgia - Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, all of Asia Minor - full of blood. I saw blood all over these countries. And I saw fire; Nuclear weapons used in many of those countries. Smoke rising from everywhere. Sudden destruction – men destroying one another. I heard these words:"Israel, Oh Israel, the great judgment has come." The angel said, "The chosen, the church, the remnant, shall be purified. The Spirit of God shall prepare the children of God."I saw fires rising to heaven. The angel said: "This is the final judgment. My church shall be purified, protected and ready for the final day. Men will die from thirst. Water shall be scarce all over the Middle East. Rivers shall dry up, and men will fight for water in those countries."The angel showed me that the United Nations shall be broken in pieces because of the crisis in the Middle East. There shall be no more United Nations. The angel with the sickle shall reap the harvest.

Egypt says Hamas views hostage-truce proposal ‘positively,’ awaits Israeli response-Foreign Minister Shoukry repeats Cairo’s rejection of Israeli control of Rafah border crossing; Israeli official tells NBC that Biden’s description of proposal is ‘not accurate’ By Lazar Berman-Today, 2:48 pm-JUN 3,24

Hamas welcomes the proposal for a hostage deal put forth by US President Joe Biden over the weekend, Egypt’s foreign minister said in Spain on Monday.“Hamas’s initial statements indicate that it received the proposal positively,” said Sameh Shoukry at a press conference with Spanish Foreign Minister  Jose Manuel Albares.Shoukry seemed to be referring to a Hamas response to Biden’s Friday speech in which it said it views the address positively and would negotiate in good faith to secure a permanent ceasefire and the permanent withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.Shoukry added that “we are now awaiting Israel’s response.”Biden announced what he described as an Israeli proposal for a deal in his speech, triggering shockwaves in the Israeli government, where far-right parties threatened to bring down the coalition if Netanyahu tried to see it approved. In his address, Biden revealed that the ostensibly new Israeli proposal for a ceasefire and hostage deal had been submitted on Thursday to Hamas via Qatar. The US president laid out some of the proposal’s key elements in some detail and urged Hamas to accept it and the Israeli government to “stand behind it.”However, on Monday a senior Israeli official called into question Biden’s characterization of the deal, stressing to NBC News that Israel had never agreed to fully withdraw its forces from Gaza in a deal. The US president’s description was “not accurate,” said the official. The official said the proposal announced by Biden wasn’t an Israeli proposal but rather one originating with the mediating countries, to which Israel made amendments.“It’s strange that they say it’s an Israeli proposal and at the same time that Israel needs to agree to it,” the official said. The comments came a day after a senior adviser to Netanyahu confirmed that while there is still work that needs to be done on the hostage release deal presented by, Israel has agreed to the framework.Shoukry also reiterated Egypt’s rejection of Israeli control of the Rafah Border Crossing.“It is difficult for the Rafah Crossing to continue operating without a Palestinian administration,” said Egypt’s top diplomat. On Sunday, Egypt expressed the same stance in a trilateral meeting with Israeli and American officials, according to the Egyptian al Qahera TV channel.Last week the IDF said it had discovered many cross-border tunnels and rocket launchers positioned by Hamas just along the border with Egypt. The IDF took control of the Gazan side of the crossing from Hamas in early May, and since then Egypt has refused to allow goods to cross through the terminal, although it has now agreed to send aid via Israel’s Kerem Shalom Crossing.Egypt is co-hosting, along with Jordan and the United Nations, an emergency international Gaza humanitarian aid conference on June 11 on the shores of the Dead Sea in Jordan.Israel will not be participating, an Israeli official told The Times of Israel. On Sunday night, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke to Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and war cabinet minister Benny Gantz to discuss the latest hostage deal proposal. In his call with Gallant, Blinken “commended Israel’s readiness to conclude a deal and affirmed that the onus is on Hamas to accept,” the State Department said in a readout of the conversation.United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken speaks during a joint press conference with Moldova’s President Maia Sandu at the Moldovan Presidency in Chisinau, Moldova, Wednesday, May 29, 2024. (AP Photo/Vadim Ghirda, Pool)-The top US diplomat also told Gantz that in addition to bringing about the release of the hostages, implementing the deal “would advance Israel’s long-term security interests, including by unlocking the possibility of calm along Israel’s border with Lebanon that would allow Israelis to return to their homes.”The conversations were the first publicized calls between senior US and Israeli officials since Biden’s Friday night speech. In a statement released by his office on Monday morning, Gallant confirmed that he had “emphasized Israel’s commitment to dismantling Hamas as a governing and military authority.”The deal, Biden said on Friday, would “bring all the hostages home, ensure Israel’s security, create a better day after in Gaza without Hamas in power, and set the stage for a political settlement that provides a better future for Israelis and Palestinians alike.”Israeli leaders asserted after Biden’s address that the war will continue until Hamas has been destroyed, and large sections of the Israeli government have criticized Biden for failing to provide clarity as to how that would be achieved.Although the US president stressed that the deal would remove the terror group from power, and said that it was “no longer capable of carrying out another October 7,” the publicized parts of the offer did not specify how Hamas would be replaced as Gaza’s ruler. The issue was discussed by the war cabinet when it convened on Sunday night.According to Hebrew media reports, Gallant presented the cabinet with a plan for “humanitarian bubbles” to be formed inside the Palestinian enclave, in which Palestinians proven to have no affiliation to Hamas or other terror groups will be responsible for overseeing the distribution of humanitarian aid inside specific neighborhoods.Jacob Magid contributed to this report.

Analysis-Biden’s ‘Israeli’ proposal for a hostage deal leaves key questions unanswered-The timing and content of the US president’s address were curious, as was Netanyahu’s reaction; that may have been by design-By Lazar Berman-Today, 12:09 am-JUN 3,24

On Friday, as many Israelis were enjoying their post-Shabbat-dinner slumber, US President Joe Biden stepped up to the microphones in the White House State Dining Room to deliver a potentially game-changing address. He presented what he called the latest Israeli proposal for a deal with Hamas to “bring all the hostages home, ensure Israel’s security, create a better day after in Gaza without Hamas in power, and set the stage for a political settlement that provides a better future for Israelis and Palestinians alike.”In his 15-minute speech, Biden laid out a three-phase plan that would result in the release of all hostages, the end of the war, and a rebuilding of the Gaza Strip without Hamas in power. But the president’s attempt to create a “decisive moment” to close down the fighting and move to the “day after” left fundamental questions unanswered. It is precisely those issues that will determine whether a deal is even possible, and whether it will achieve Israel’s war aims of freeing the hostages and toppling Hamas… or be the recipe for the return of a more lethal and determined Hamas. For starters, Biden plainly did not present a complete accounting of Israel’s latest proposal, and it remains unclear whether he was seeking to nudge the Israeli leadership toward terms it has not accepted. In his speech, Biden called it a “comprehensive new proposal” offered by Israel. If it is indeed new, when was it agreed upon by Israel’s war cabinet? Channel 13 reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu 11 days ago allowed Israel’s negotiating team to discuss a “prolonged ceasefire” in its indirect negotiations with Hamas, and that Biden’s speech in part constituted the “outing” of the Israeli proposal as approved by the war cabinet several days ago.It also said the military censor in recent days prevented publication of aspects of Israel’s position. The Kan public broadcaster reported that during a meeting last Sunday, the war cabinet was split over Hamas’s demand that Israel end the war as part of a hostage deal, with some ministers believing that there is room for negotiation on the matter while Netanyahu saw it as tantamount to surrendering to the terror group.Western officials also told Israel last week that it should test Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar’s response to a potential proposal that would include a long-term ceasefire, the reconstruction of Gaza, a governing mechanism for the Strip that does not involve the terror group, and the exile of its leaders, according to Channel 12.The war cabinet meeting last week appeared to be a discussion of the terms Mossad chief David Barnea presented to CIA Director William Burns and Qatar’s Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani in Paris days before. A senior Israeli official told The Times of Israel at the time that talks would restart based on “new proposals led by the mediators Egypt and Qatar, with active involvement of the US.”Einav Zangauker, mother of hostage Matan Zangauker, speaks to protesters near the Begin Gate of the Defense Ministry Headquarters in Tel Aviv on June 1, 2024, demanding the government accept the hostage release proposal as laid out by President Joe Biden. (Roi Boshi / Pro-Democracy Reform Movement)-If it was indeed a new proposal, was it fully Israel’s? The Israeli reaction was fairly ambiguous on that account. In a statement issued immediately after Biden’s speech, Netanyahu’s office said, “The Israeli government is united in the desire to return our hostages as soon as possible and is working to achieve this goal.”“Therefore, the prime minister authorized the negotiating team to present an outline for achieving this goal, while insisting that the war will not end until all of its goals are achieved, including the return of all our hostages and the elimination of Hamas’s military and governmental capabilities,” the statement continued.“The exact outline proposed by Israel, including the conditional transition from stage to stage, allows Israel to maintain these principles,” the statement added.Netanyahu’s office did not clarify whether its proposal is the same one described by Biden during his speech — and did not refer directly to Biden’s speech at all.Asked whether the deal described by Netanyahu’s office is the same one Biden laid out in his speech, a senior Biden administration official briefing reporters avoided answering directly: “I have no doubt that the deal will be characterized by Israel and will be characterized by Hamas, but we know what’s in the deal. We know what the expectations are.”Likewise, an Israeli official avoided answering the question, telling The Times of Israel on Saturday night only that “Israel’s conditions for the end of the war have not changed.”In an interview with Britain’s Sunday Times newspaper, Netanyahu’s diplomatic adviser Ophir Falk seemed to indicate that the proposal did not originate in Jerusalem. He characterized it as “a deal we agreed to — it’s not a good deal, but we dearly want the hostages released, all of them.”Another important question in gauging Biden’s strategy is whether his speech was coordinated with Netanyahu.Hebrew media outlets on Saturday night presented various accounts, with Channel 12 saying the White House gave the PMO and Ambassador Mike Herzog some specifics about the speech about two or three hours before Biden delivered it, and Channel 13 claiming some in the PMO were angered that Israel was not substantively updated. The timing of the speech is also notable. It came the day after former president and current contender Donald Trump was convicted of a felony, meaning that it received scant coverage in the US.It also was presented after the Sabbath had begun in Israel, giving Israeli officials the better part of a day to respond. And Biden made his remarks just before Netanyahu was officially invited to address a joint session of Congress. The scheduling would seem to indicate that it was done in coordination with Netanyahu. But one Israeli source told The Times of Israel that the prime minister was effectively “blindsided” by the speech.Devil in the details-More significantly, the proposal that Biden proffered is hazy on crucial details. He said the first, six-week phase would include “a full and complete ceasefire,” but did not lay out what exactly that meant. Would one rocket fired on Sderot mean the ceasefire was over? What if it was launched by Palestinian Islamic Jihad and not Hamas? Could Israel retaliate?Biden also said Israel would conduct “a withdrawal of Israeli forces from all populated areas of Gaza” in the first stage. Does that include the Netzarim corridor splitting Gaza in two? What about the recently conquered Philadelphi Corridor? He promised that IDF troops would fully withdraw from Gaza in phase two. But Israel has been creating a buffer zone along the border inside of the Strip, complete with new infrastructure meant to enable a long-term Israeli security presence there. Would this be abandoned as well? The president stressed that only Palestinian civilians would be allowed to return to their homes in northern Gaza. But who would ensure that is the case if IDF troops had pulled back from the main arteries from southern Gaza? This could be a recipe for Hamas to reassert control across the Strip.Biden also said that if negotiations to move to a permanent ceasefire take longer than the six weeks allotted for phase one, the ceasefire “will still continue as long as negotiations continue.” That could constitute a clear incentive for Hamas to buy time by stalling, equivocating, and asking for further clarifications to keep the façade of talks alive as long as possible, with no intention of releasing the remaining hostages.Furthermore, Biden did not spell out how many hostages would be released in the first stage, and on what schedule. The Hamas offer from a month ago sought a timeline that would see fewer than half of the 33 phase one “humanitarian” hostages released in the first month, after the terror group had already gained major concessions.Hamas also demanded that all prisoners from the 2011 Gilad Shalit deal who were subsequently rearrested — meaning they had gone right back to terrorism — be freed. And it was not open to an Israeli demand that Jerusalem be able to veto which security prisoners would be barred from returning to the West Bank.Releasing unrepentant terrorists into the West Bank would risk supercharging Hamas, unleashing a new wave of terror, and dangerously undermining the same Palestinian Authority that, once reformed, Biden wants to see running Gaza soon, and a Palestinian state in the future. On these important elements, too, Biden was silent. The incredible vanishing Hamas-Perhaps the most problematic part of the Israel/Biden proposal is his prediction that it would yield “a better ‘day after’ in Gaza without Hamas in power.”We know that Hamas is determined to remain in power, and it sees the hostages as its guarantee that it will survive the Israeli campaign. Military pressure seems to be the only conceivable way of uprooting Hamas, but the proposal is centered on a six-week pause to the war that turns into a permanent ceasefire. What is the mechanism for ensuring that Hamas is no longer ruling Gaza? And even if it is not ruling the Strip somehow, will it be barred from any participation in the postwar rebuilding and administration of a region that harbors deep and broad support for the terrorist group? “We don’t know Hamas’s post-war role,” warned Michael Oren, former Israeli ambassador to Washington. For that matter, the Israeli government’s own promises regarding the talks are similarly silent about how Hamas is defeated if the military campaign stops.“Israel’s conditions for the end of the war have not changed,” an Israeli official told The Times of Israel, listing them as “destroying Hamas military and civil capabilities, freeing the hostages, and ensuring that Gaza will no longer represent a threat to Israel.” The Israeli proposal, insisted the official, ensures that Israel can achieve all of these conditions before a permanent ceasefire takes effect. But Hamas is nowhere close to being knocked out of the fight, and Israel would not be able to make significant gains in that direction during the temporary truce in phase one of a deal. The Munders from Kibbutz Nir Oz — grandfather Avraham Munder is still held captive in Gaza, represented by the empty seat, while his grandson, Ohad and wife Ruti, were released after 49 days in captivity after the family was taken hostage on October 7, 2023. (Courtesy)-With so many open questions, and officials averse to answering them, one can only speculate about the overall aim.Meanwhile, the president conspicuously failed to issue any threats against Hamas if it does not accept the offer. Biden said that this is Hamas’s opportunity “to prove whether they really mean it” when claiming to want a ceasefire — a rather improbable attempt to bridge the glaring problem that a deal that meets Israel’s core demands means it will not meet those of Hamas. This is a zero-sum contest — either Hamas is toppled and Israel prevails, or Hamas retains its arms and retakes the Gaza Strip, a stunning defeat for the Jewish state. No speech of Biden’s can square that circle. It is entirely possible that the president offered a deliberately vague proposal because he does not expect Hamas to hold up its end of the deal and release all prisoners while stepping aside. An offer open to interpretation could make it more likely that Hamas will at least assent to the first stage and release more hostages than it would have if Biden had not gone ahead with the speech. Then Israel would be free to resume the long, hard work of destroying Hamas.

Smotrich said to consult with rabbis on leaving government over proposed hostage deal-Netanyahu to meet Ben Gvir in attempt to dissuade him from resigning; will reportedly show him full draft of agreement said to prove Israel not required to stop fighting Hamas
By ToI Staff Today, 2:41 pm

Following threats from hardline members of his coalition, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet with National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir on Monday to dissuade him from bringing down the government over a proposed hostage release and ceasefire deal, while Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich was reported to have held consultations of his own on the matter with religious leaders. The Kan public broadcaster reported on Monday that over the last day, Smotrich held discussions with several rabbis affiliated with his Religious Zionism party to discuss the party’s future in Netanyahu’s government should the hostage deal announced by US President Joe Biden late last week come to fruition.According to the report, Smotrich is weighing the option of withdrawing his party from the government even before the deal is finalized, if he sees that it is progressing in that direction. In a speech on Friday night, Biden revealed what he said was a new Israeli proposal for a ceasefire and hostage deal submitted on Thursday to Hamas via Qatar, and laid out some of its key elements. The offer would “bring all the hostages home, ensure Israel’s security, create a better day after in Gaza without Hamas in power, and set the stage for a political settlement that provides a better future for Israelis and Palestinians alike,” Biden said, although he did not specify how Hamas would be removed from power. On Saturday night, Smotrich said he had informed Netanyahu that he would resign from government should the proposal be accepted. Ben Gvir issued a similar warning, threatening to “dismantle the government” if it was adopted. To that end, Netanyahu will reportedly meet with Ben Gvir on Monday to present him with the blueprint of the hostage deal and ceasefire proposal to counteract his accusation that the deal would mean the end of Israel’s war against Hamas.Quoting an anonymous source in the Prime Minister’s Office, Hebrew-language media reported that Netanyahu planned to show him that contrary to Biden’s remarks, the draft does not have a clause obligating Israel to end the fighting.Netanyahu will show him that it is not an “irresponsible deal,” the source said, after Ben Gvir accused Netanyahu on Sunday of agreeing to a deal that would ensure Israel’s “total defeat” rather than the victory he has repeatedly promised. Both Smotrich and Ben Gvir have issued similar threats in the past, whenever Israel and Hamas seem close to reaching a deal.In January, Ben Gvir threatened to topple the government over a deal that Israel was rumored to be considering, leading Opposition Leader Yair Lapid to say his party would serve as a “safety net for the government” should this happen, an offer he again repeated on Monday.Smotrich, in April, appeared to warn he would bolt the coalition over another failed attempt at securing an agreement, which looked promising at the time.He warned then that the reported deal was “disastrous” and would constitute “the surrender of the State of Israel.”And while neither official brought down the government over the weeklong truce in late November that saw the release of 105 hostages, Ben Gvir’s far-right Otzma Yehudit party voted against it.The remaining members of the governing coalition have yet to see the latest draft proposal, as unlike in previous rounds of negotiations, it was not presented to the security cabinet ahead of its submission to mediators, for fear of it being leaked to the public too early, Kan reported. While some lawmakers have already said they will not support the deal based on the partial overview delivered by Biden, others have reportedly informed family members of hostages that they intend to back it.As part of their efforts to rally support for the deal, the family of Yagev Buchshtav, who was taken hostage from his home on Kibbutz Nirim on October 7, met with several lawmakers on Monday, including Likud MK Gila Gamliel. They later said that Gamliel had expressed her intention to support the deal if it is brought to a vote.

In dozens of northern towns and villages that were evacuated under fire from the Iranian-backed Hezbollah terror group in Lebanon, officials hope daily rocket warning sirens will give way to school bells by the time the academic year starts on September 1.Of 60,000 civilians relocated from northern Israel at the outset of the war, 14,600 are children, scattered in temporary kindergartens and schools, or makeshift premises throughout the country’s interior.Education Minister Yoav Kisch said Israel is spending $38 million building new kindergartens and schools just out of rocket range in the north, which can house the students if their original schools are not yet safe by September 1.If the new buildings turn out not to be needed, other uses can be found for them.“I’m hoping that this investment will not be used for the kids that live on the border,” he told Reuters in an interview. It would take at least a month to prepare the abandoned northern schools, some of which are in towns that are rubble-strewn due to the Hezbollah attacks, for next year’s intake of pupils.“So if we are going to see a solution by August 1, we know that we can start on September 1,” he said. Failing that, “we’re going to shift all our focus on to the other option.”Since October 8, Hezbollah-led forces have attacked Israeli communities and military posts along the border on a near-daily basis. So far, the skirmishes on the border have resulted in 10 civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of 14 IDF soldiers and reservists. The new school year has become a sort of deadline for the safe return of northern evacuees. It was also cited beginning early this year as the date for the return of southern evacuees, most of whom have now returned to their homes in the Gaza border area.In April, it was reported that Netanyahu had responded dismissively to concerns raised in a cabinet meeting about northern evacuees remaining displaced into the coming school year: “So what if they return to their homes a few months after September?” the prime minister is reported to have said. The comments stoked anger among residents of the north, who protested on Israel’s Independence Day, symbolically ‘seceding’ from the state and accusing the government of having “disengaged” from the region.Netanyahu met with disaffected northern leaders in late May, vowing to restore security to the area but refusing to provide a date by which residents could expect to return, or clarify the government’s plans.“I am not going to tell Hezbollah what we are going to do,” Netanyahu told the forum. “I am not going to share with our sworn enemy the dates and how we are going to do it.”‘A limit that we passed’Dislocated and hard-put to do homework at the cramped accommodation provided to their families by the state, many of the children from the north are slipping, teachers say. Their high school dropout rate can reach 5%, according to Kisch — around double the national average. Some of their parents are looking to resettle permanently, giving up on ever returning to their battered hometowns.“I’m not sure that all the citizens of Kiryat Shmona will go back to Kiryat Shmona,” said Ofer Zafrani, principal of the border city’s Danziger High School, which relocated to a row of converted offices atop a multiplex cinema outside Tel Aviv.“We understand this is the price we need to pay,” he told Reuters as pupils milled noisily around him. “But I think that there is a limit that we passed. It’s too much.”In the south, even in communities alongside the Gaza Strip, some Israeli families have been able to return home as the army operates across the fence to suppress rocket fire. Zafrani said citizens in the north need a similar chance to go home.“We must be back — and not only be back, but there has to be a solution for the situation for the north, like the south, so that we will feel safe,” Zafrani said. Two fronts, intertwined-The exchanges of fire on Israel’s northern front, in parallel with the war in Gaza, have so far been contained without escalating into a major all-out cross-border war with Hezbollah, like the last one in 2006.On the Lebanese side, 90,000 civilians have also been evacuated, around a third of them children, most now registered in new schools, according to United Nations figures.Israel has threatened possibly imminent escalation to an invasion of Lebanon, while also leaving the door open to a US- or French-mediated truce in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1701, passed to end hostilities at the end of the last war. That resolution, which has been consistently violated, mandates that Hezbollah forces remain north of the Litani River, providing Israel a strategic buffer from attack by the Iran-backed terror group.Touring the frontier on May 23, Netanyahu said Israel has “detailed, important, even surprising plans” for driving Hezbollah back, “but we don’t let the enemy in on these plans.”National Unity party leader Benny Gantz, who serves in the war cabinet with Netanyahu, also visited the north at the same time, in a separate armored cavalcade.“I call on the government to commence preparations, already today, for us to return residents safely to their homes by September 1, whether through force or an accord,” Gantz said. “We must not allow another year to be lost in the north.”The Lebanon and Gaza fronts are intertwined, as Hezbollah says it will keep shelling as long as Israel’s war on Hamas continues. Both groups are allies of Iran.Promoting a Gaza truce, US President Joe Biden has dangled a knock-on benefit of quiet in southern Lebanon and northern Israel. But some Israeli officials fear being boxed in: once northern residents return, Hamas might see an opportunity to strike again, calculating that Israel will not want to retaliate lest Hezbollah attacks resume and necessitate fresh evacuations.Israelis also fear that something like the Hamas attack that started this war on October 7, in which thousands of terrorists poured into southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, could be replicated from the north if Hezbollah forces are not weakened or at least pushed back.Israeli education officials say that they are thus also preparing for a far more disruptive scenario than continued evacuation: full-on war with Hezbollah. That would likely put all of Israel under threat from the group’s rockets. Then, Kisch said, most of the country’s schools would be shuttered as civilians take shelter.“If it will be a long process, there will be homeschooling as well,” said Kisch, who was Israel’s deputy health minister during the COVID lockdowns and remote-learning ordinances.“But I hope that we’ll be able, with a very strong and effective war, to get this threat out of our way very fast.”

US expects Israel to commit to its hostage deal proposal if Hamas agrees-White House believes IDF has accomplished ‘most military goals in Gaza,’ Kirby says, while acknowledging Hamas still represents ‘a viable threat to the Israeli people’By Jacob Magid-and ToI Staff 2 June 2024, 9:32 pm

The US expects Israel to stick to the hostage deal proposal it made last week and accept the offer if Hamas consents as well, White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said on Sunday“We have every expectation that if Hamas agrees to the proposal — as was transmitted to them, an Israeli proposal — that Israel would say ‘Yes,'” Kirby said in an interview on ABC News’s “This Week.”The Israeli proposal for a hostage release and ceasefire deal was presented on Friday night by US President Joe Biden, who revealed that it had already been submitted on Thursday to Hamas via Qatar. The US president laid out some of the proposal’s key elements in some detail and urged Hamas to accept it and the Israeli government to “stand behind it.”The offer, he said, would “bring all the hostages home, ensure Israel’s security, create a better day after in Gaza without Hamas in power, and set the stage for a political settlement that provides a better future for Israelis and Palestinians alike.”While Israeli officials have confirmed that the offer publicly laid out by Biden on Friday is in fact the proposal Jerusalem submitted, Israeli leaders have asserted that the war will continue until Hamas has been destroyed.Although Biden said the deal would remove the terror group from power, and stressed that it was “no longer capable of carrying out another October 7,” the publicized parts of the offer did not specify how Hamas will be replaced as Gaza’s rulers. Moreover, Netanyahu’s far-right coalition partners have pledged to bolt the government if the premier gives a final okay to the proposal his war cabinet signed off on last week.It could still well have enough support to pass the broader security cabinet, but National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir has threatened to bring down the government, and Netanyahu has a history of backing out of deals he has made, due to fears of losing the support of his right-wing coalition partners he needs to remain in power.Asked for the basis of Biden’s assertion that Hamas can no longer carry out another attack like the October 7 terror onslaught that started the ongoing war in Gaza, Kirby told ABC that it was “based on an accumulation of our own intelligence assessments across the intelligence agencies. He stressed, however, that the US was “not saying that Hamas has been wiped off the face of the map.”“We have not said that Hamas has no military capabilities,” Kirby said. “We have not said that they don’t still represent a viable threat to the Israeli people. Of course they do.”“But they don’t have the military capabilities to do what they did on the seventh of October. From a military perspective only — as President Biden said — the Israelis have accomplished most of their goals in Gaza,” he asserted. This gap between Hamas being unable to carry out another October 7-like attack and still representing a viable threat to Israel will likely lie at the heart of deliberations by Israel as to whether it will stick with the hostage deal proposal its war cabinet authorized last week.In an apparent effort to narrow that gap, Biden indicated Friday that Israel will have his support to continue pursuing Hamas’s leaders, even after the war is over.“Israel will always have the right to defend itself against threats to its security and to bring those responsible for October 7 to justice,” he said. This appeared to be part of a broader post-war approach to Hamas by the US, which seems reconciled to the terror group managing to limp on in some form. However, US officials asserted to The Times of Israel earlier this month that the broader diplomatic initiative Washington is advancing would see the terror group marginalized in Gaza by alternative forces backed by America’s Arab allies.Still not agreement on Rafah crossing-In an effort to advance regional cooperation in Gaza even as the fighting there continues, delegations from Israel and the US met with Egyptian officials in Cairo on Sunday in an effort to resolve a dispute over the enclave’s southernmost city of Rafah and its border crossing with Egypt. The Rafah Crossing has remained shuttered since the IDF took over control of the Palestinian side on May 7, and Egypt has said it refuses to reopen it to vital humanitarian aid so long as it is under Israeli control.Until the crossing is reopened, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi agreed to a request from Biden to temporarily divert United Nations aid to the Kerem Shalom Crossing, near Rafah but on Gaza’s border with Israel.Despite efforts on Sunday to reach an agreement that would allow the crossing to reopen, the issue remained unresolved,  Egypt’s al Qahera News TV reported.According to the report, Egypt continued to demand that Israel withdraw before it agrees to resume normal operation of the crossing, and blamed Israel for aid not flowing from Egypt to Rafah across the border.War broke out on October 7 when Hamas terrorists infiltrated Israel, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping 252.The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 35,000 people in the Strip have been killed or are presumed dead in the fighting so far, though only some 24,000 fatalities have been identified at hospitals. The toll, which cannot be verified, includes some 15,000 terror operatives Israel says it has killed in battle. Israel also says it killed some 1,000 terrorists inside Israel on October 7.294 soldiers have been killed during the ground offensive against Hamas and during operations along the Gaza border. A civilian Defense Ministry contractor was also killed in the Strip.Lazar Berman contributed to this report.

'Iran is watching to see if we capitulate,' premier says-Netanyahu: We will destroy Hamas, Biden’s version of hostage deal ‘incomplete’PM says claims Israel will stop fighting before Hamas is toppled and hostages are freed are ‘incorrect’; official says proposal didn’t originate with Israel
By Lazar Berman-Today, 5:36 pm-JUN 3,24

Israeli officials pushed back on Monday on elements of the hostage deal proposal presented by US President Joe Biden over the weekend as an Israeli offer, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted that there were gaps between that proposal and Israel’s stance.“The claim that we agreed to a ceasefire without our conditions being met is incorrect,” the prime minister reportedly told lawmakers.Netanyahu said in a Knesset meeting that Israel will not end the war in Gaza until it achieves its three war aims, an Israeli official told The Times of Israel: destroying Hamas’s military and civil governance capabilities, securing the release of all hostages, and ensuring that Gaza no longer poses a threat to Israel.“The proposal that Biden presented is incomplete,” the premier told MKs at a closed-door meeting of the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, according to media reports. He also reportedly said that there are “gaps” between the Israeli version and Biden’s recounting of it.“The war will stop in order to bring hostages back, and afterward we will hold discussions. There are other details that the US president did not present to the public,” Netanyahu was quoted as saying.According to Channel 12, Netanyahu said that Israel can stop the war for six weeks, but not end it permanently. “Iran and all of our enemies are watching to see if we capitulate,” he said.Biden announced in a speech late Friday what he described as an Israeli proposal for a deal, triggering shockwaves in the government, whose far-right parties threatened to bring down the coalition if Netanyahu tried to see it approved. In his address, Biden revealed that the new Israeli proposal for a ceasefire and hostage deal had been submitted on Thursday to Hamas via Qatar. The US president laid out some of the proposal’s key elements in some detail and urged Hamas to accept it and the Israeli government to “stand behind it.”Biden indicated that the second phase of the deal would see a permanent end to the war and that Hamas would not be in power, but did not detail how that would come about.Meanwhile, a senior Israeli official on Monday called into question Biden’s characterization of the proposal, stressing to NBC News that Israel never agreed to fully withdraw its forces from Gaza as part of any agreement.Biden’s description was “not accurate,” said the unnamed official. The official said that what Biden described wasn’t an Israeli proposal but rather one originating with the mediating countries, to which Israel made amendments.“It’s strange that they say it’s an Israeli proposal and at the same time that Israel needs to agree to it,” mused the official. In a video statement after Monday’s Knesset meeting, Netanyahu said that Israel had gone “a long way” in order to try to get the hostages back, but asserted that all the while “we maintained the aims of the war, primarily the elimination of Hamas.“We insist that we achieve both [aims],” he said. “It is not something I am adding now, it is not something I am adding because I was pressured by the coalition. It is something we unanimously agreed upon in the war cabinet.”The comments came a day after a senior adviser to Netanyahu confirmed that while there is still work to be done on the hostage release deal, Israel has agreed to the framework.Hamas, for its part, welcomed the proposal put forth by Biden, Egypt’s foreign minister said in Spain on Monday.“Hamas’s initial statements indicate that it received the proposal positively,” said Sameh Shoukry at a press conference with Spanish Foreign Minister  Jose Manuel Albares.Shoukry seemed to be referring to a Hamas response to Biden’s speech in which it said it views the address positively and would negotiate in good faith to secure a permanent ceasefire and the permanent withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.Still, The Wall Street Journal on Monday cited Hamas officials as saying they were seeking a “detailed proposal in writing” outlining Biden’s proposed deal, amid concerns that Israel would not commit to a long-term ceasefire.Citing messages purportedly sent by Hamas chief in Gaza Yahya Sinwar to Arab mediators, the news outlet reported that Sinwar — unlike Hamas leaders abroad — is not seeking an end to the war anytime soon, since he believes the longer fighting drags on, the more Israel is being turned into “an international pariah” while support for Palestinians grows. On Sunday night, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke to Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and war cabinet minister Benny Gantz to discuss the latest proposal. In his call with Gallant, Blinken “commended Israel’s readiness to conclude a deal and affirmed that the onus is on Hamas to accept,” the State Department said in a readout of the conversation. The top US diplomat also told Gantz that in addition to bringing about the release of the hostages, implementing the deal “would advance Israel’s long-term security interests, including by unlocking the possibility of calm along Israel’s border with Lebanon that would allow Israelis to return to their homes.”In a statement released by his office on Monday morning, Gallant confirmed that he had “emphasized Israel’s commitment to dismantling Hamas as a governing and military authority.”The deal, Biden said on Friday, would “bring all the hostages home, ensure Israel’s security, create a better day after in Gaza without Hamas in power, and set the stage for a political settlement that provides a better future for Israelis and Palestinians alike.”Israeli leaders asserted after Biden’s address that the war would continue until Hamas has been destroyed, and large sections of the Israeli government have criticized Biden for failing to provide clarity as to how that would be achieved.Although the US president stressed that the deal would remove the terror group from power, and said that it was “no longer capable of carrying out another October 7,” the publicized parts of the offer did not specify how Hamas would be replaced as Gaza’s ruler. The issue was discussed by the war cabinet when it convened on Sunday night.According to Hebrew media reports, Gallant presented the cabinet with a plan for “humanitarian bubbles” to be formed inside the Palestinian enclave, in which Palestinians proven to have no affiliation to Hamas or other terror groups will be responsible for overseeing the distribution of humanitarian aid inside specific neighborhoods.Jacob Magid and Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Analysis-Argentinian president’s surprising devotion to Judaism and Israel provokes tension-Javier Milei has made an emotional visit to the Western Wall and supported the Israeli campaign against Hamas, but some fret that his pro-Jewish posturing could stir trouble-By AP and ToI Staff Today, 10:59 am-JUN 3,24

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — At the base of the sacred Western Wall in Jerusalem’s Old City, President Javier Milei of Argentina appeared to be in a spiritual trance. With head and hands pressed against the ancient stone, he prayed with an Orthodox rabbi who introduced him to Judaism three years ago. Although born and raised Roman Catholic, Milei has increasingly shown public interest in Judaism and even expressed intentions to convert.Stepping back from the wall, Milei broke down. He hugged Rabbi Shimon Axel Wahnish close, sobbing onto his shoulder.“In that moment, I felt proud that we have such determined leader, with such deep spiritual values,” Wahnish told The Associated Press in a recent interview, recalling their state trip to Israel in February. For many Argentines, that pride was fraught with peril.Breaking decades of policy precedent, Milei has gone further in his support of right-wing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government than perhaps any other world leader as Israel faces growing isolation over its war with Palestinian terror group Hamas in the Gaza Strip, and the tens of thousands killed. His posture could not stand in starker contrast to most of Latin America — where Bolivia and Colombia have severed ties with Israel and at least five regional countries, most recently Brazil, have pulled ambassadors from Tel Aviv.“Among great nations that should be pillars of the free world, I see indifference in some and fear in others about standing on the side of truth,” Milei told Jewish community leaders at an event last month commemorating the 81st anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising. It was a veiled swipe at Western powers — including the United States — for criticizing Israeli military conduct. The crowd leaped to its feet in applause. The president’s supporters insist his newfound Jewish fervor has no bearing on his foreign policy. But Milei’s infatuation with Judaism and outspoken support for Israel has generated fears and exposed fissures within Argentina’s Jewish community, among the biggest in the world, and roiled relations with its neighbors.Argentine Jews remain deeply scarred by a pair of lethal bombings targeting Israel’s embassy in 1992 and the Argentine Jewish Mutual Association, a community center known by its Spanish acronym AMIA, in 1994. Authorities allege Iran plotted the attacks and Lebanon’s Hezbollah terror group carried them out. No one has been held responsible. Argentina’s investigation has been mired in controversy.“Milei has a messianic mind, and this is quite dangerous,” said Diana Malamud, whose husband was among the 85 people killed in the AMIA attack. “His policies can not only stoke conflicts at the international level… but also generate antisemitism within our country.”Milei’s curiosity about Judaism began as a kind of penitence in 2021 when he faced accusations of harboring pro-Nazi sympathies and wanted to prove in a speech that he bore no animus toward Jews. He connected with Sephardic leader Rabbi Wahnish to have “a chat that was supposed to last 10 minutes and ended two hours later,” Wahnish said.As Milei evolved from TV pundit to “anarcho-capitalist” president, Wahnish guided him through the study of Torah. Seeking common ground between his vision of radical libertarianism and the prophecy of the Old Testament, Milei’s casual interest morphed into a regular religious practice.Wahnish, recently appointed Argentina’s ambassador to Israel, declined to comment on Milei’s conversion.“In Judaism and Moses, Milei sees a cultural and spiritual revolution toward freedom,” Wahnish said. Since childhood, he added, Milei “felt Moses was his idol, his hero.”Milei, who owns four clones of his dead dog Conan, has never been the most conventional occupant of Argentina’s highest office. Still, his foray into Judaism has come as a particular surprise. On the campaign trail, Milei quoted the Torah, made multiple Brooklyn pilgrimages to the tomb of influential Hasidic leader Menachem Mendel Schneerson, and sounded the shofar, the ram’s-horn trumpet blasted during the Jewish High Holy Days, to close his electoral campaign.Ahead of Milei’s victory, nearly 4,000 Argentine Jewish intellectuals signed a petition voicing concern over Milei’s “political use of Judaism.”“It’s perverse… to use the shofar, which is played during religious ceremonies, to announce himself,” said Pablo Gorodneff, secretary-general of the progressive Argentine Jewish Appeal group. “It makes me very frustrated, very sad.”As fighting raged in Gaza, Milei flew to Israel for his first foreign visit and praised Netanyahu without reservation.Following in the footsteps of former US president Donald Trump, he pledged to move Argentina’s embassy from a beachfront bastion near Tel Aviv to Jerusalem — aggravating an emotional issue at the heart of the conflict. Netanyahu called Milei “a great friend.” Hamas called him “a partner of the Zionist occupier.”The war started when Hamas led a massive cross-border attack on Israel in which terrorists killed 1,200 people and abducted 251 who were taken as hostages to the Gaza Strip. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 35,000 people in the Strip have been killed or are presumed dead in the fighting so far, though only some 24,000 fatalities have been identified at hospitals. The toll, which cannot be verified, includes some 15,000 terror operatives Israel says it has killed in battle. Israel also says it killed some 1,000 terrorists inside Israel on October 7.Last month, Milei’s government upended Argentina’s traditional recognition of Palestinian statehood, joining the US and Israel to vote against Palestinian membership at the UN.His foreign policy shift has thrilled Jewish community leaders, but also left them on edge.“If Milei’s supposed defense of Israel is an attack on Palestinian rights, it puts the Jewish community in Argentina at risk,” said Héctor Shalom, director of Argentina’s Anne Frank Center. “The decades of impunity for past attacks show our vulnerability.”The 1994 bombing, Argentina’s most notorious cold case, still spreads unease. After Hamas’s October 7 attack that triggered the war in Gaza, the mood in the Jewish community went from worried to alarmed.Jewish high schools requested that students stop wearing their uniforms, so as not to identify as Jewish. Authorities jacked up security at synagogues. Two bomb scares emptied out the AMIA building.“Security levels have always been high but now there is a much greater sensitivity,” said Amos Linetzky, head of AMIA.Government officials have also grown anxious, lashing out at Iran and warning that the Israel-Hamas war has stoked the embers of Islamic militancy and blown them all the way to Latin America.Upon news of the first Iranian assault on Israeli territory on April 14 — an attack with hundreds of missiles and drones that was almost entirely intercepted — local media reported Milei’s pro-Israel stance had made him a target. He cut his state visit to Denmark short and flew home to convene a crisis committee alongside the Israeli ambassador.Milei’s hardline security minister, Patricia Bullrich, singled out left-wing neighbors Bolivia and Chile as Islamist hotbeds, ordering reinforcements to Argentina’s northern border.“We are on high alert,” Bullrich said, alleging that Bolivia — which last year struck a defense agreement with Iran — teems with Iranian Revolutionary Guard operatives. “Politically correct messages like calling for peace are not Argentina’s position.”Without providing evidence, Bullrich also claimed that Chile — home to the largest Palestinian population outside the Arab world — hosts Iran-backed Hezbollah. The accusations, decried as baseless by Bolivia and Chile, prompted both governments to pull their ambassadors from Buenos Aires. On Saturday, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, a 57-member group describing itself as “the collective voice of the Muslim world,” issued a furious denunciation of what it described as Milei’s anti-Islamic rhetoric. For years, US and Argentine intelligence services have subjected the Triple Frontier, where Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay meet, to intense surveillance, scouring the large population of Lebanese and Syrian immigrants for Islamist sympathies.“One of the things I don’t think gets enough attention is how long Hezbollah has had a presence in our hemisphere,” Senator Marco Rubio, Republican of Florida, told a Senate Foreign Relations Committee this spring.Washington claims Hezbollah funds its activities through drug traffickers in the area. The US Treasury has sanctioned dozens of individuals in South America over alleged ties to Hezbollah, most recently last fall. Authorities have reported thwarting attacks, with Israel’s Mossad spy agency helping Brazil arrest alleged Hezbollah recruits last November.Hezbollah denies running operations in the region.“What would Hezbollah want with Latin America?” the group’s spokesperson, Rana Sahili, asked the AP. She accused Milei of playing loose with facts to score points in a “political game.”Experts say the true threat lies somewhere in the middle.“Some say Hezbollah’s presence in Latin America is a complete fabrication, while others say the group uses the region as a base and we’re doomed,” said Fernando Brancoli at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.“Neither is correct.”

Russia would be able to disable Britain and France's nuclear deterrents 'within one day' if World War Three breaks out, a Moscow military expert has claimed.Dr Yuri Baranchik, Deputy Director of the RUSSTRAT Institute, declared that within 24 hours of the conflict in Ukraine hypothetically descending into nuclear war Russia would 'eliminate the nuclear potentials of Britain and France'.Writing on Telegram, he said targeting British and French nuclear arsenals would '[deprive] Europe of its military-geopolitical status' and reduce the number of nuclear powers from nine to seven.'If we pull out the nuclear teeth of Britain and France, then the NATO bloc will no longer have any blackmail in the European theater of operations,' he asserted.Dr Baranchik, who earlier this year urged an attack on a British Type 45 Destroyer capable of intercepting missile threats, said it would be straightforward to defeat Britain's waning deterrent as 'its entire nuclear potential since 1998' has been the four Vanguard-class submarines based in Faslane, Scotland. The comments came as plans were disclosed for 'mobile modular shelters' in Russian cities, planned to 'protect the population from the effects of all types of modern weapons', including nuclear.Baranchik suggested Russia would be able to knock out Britain's submarines 'within one day' Dr Baranchik wrote that destroying the arsenals of Britain and France would allow Russia to give the European Union 'an ultimatum', with the United States not willing to engage Russia in direct nuclear conflict.'This must be done at a time of shift change in the White House,' he assessed in a lengthy post this week. The geopolitics expert stopped short of saying how Russia would carry out attacks on Britain's submarines and bases, judging it a matter for military officials, but noted the waning capacity of Britain's deterrent stretched around the UK and undergoing repairs. He added that France would be 'more complicated' to take out than Britain as its deterrent is more widely spread.'But it is still solvable. Moreover, within one day.''Instead of a protracted war of attrition, within one day we deprive France and Britain of their nuclear weapons and destroy the whole of Europe,' he wrote, before redacting the last clause.'We deprive them of their status as nuclear powers and radically change the entire security system in Europe.'The post highlighted the perceived priorities of Russia, Dr Baranchik going on to suggest that such measures would allow the Kremlin to strongarm the United States into ending its military and financial support for Kyiv.Only last week, the United States issued a new round of funding up to $275mn for Ukraine, with Kyiv calling for desperately-needed missiles to push back the Russian advances around Kharkiv.A Moscow-installed official in the northern city today claimed Russian forced have taken control of strategic hills near Lyptsi, allowing troops to 'control all supply routes' in the Strilecha-Lyptsi area.Still, with the war now in its third year, some European leaders have taken a stronger stance against Russia, met with threats of nuclear retaliation from the Kremlin.Plans have now been revealed for 'mobile modular shelters' in Russian cities to 'protect the population from the effects of all types of modern weapons including nuclear weapons'.The so-called KUB-M includes two modules: sheltered rooms for 54 people and a technical block. The key advantage of KUB-M over other civil defence structures is mobility, according to plans revealed in Russia.'If necessary, they can be transported by road or rail to a new location for construction and connected to existing utility networks.'The KUB-M supposedly provides protection for 48 hours from air shock waves and light radiation from a nuclear explosion, penetrating radiation and radioactive contamination of the area, high-explosive and fragmentation effects of conventional weapons, falling debris from building structures, as well as hazardous chemicals and fires. They are designed by the All-Russian Research Institute of Civil Defense and Emergency Situations.Putin's mouthpiece, and former president, Dmitry Medvedev again urged today that Russia's constant nuclear war rhetoric was 'not intimidation or a nuclear bluff'.'The current military conflict with the West is developing according to the worst possible scenario,' he warned.'There is a constant escalation in the power of applicable NATO weapons.'Therefore, today no one can rule out the transition of the conflict to its final stage.'With the US having now set aside $61bn in aid for Ukraine, approved late April, and NATO seeking a minimum of $40bn a year from members in additional support, Russia has looked to unsettle those opposing the invasion with continued threats of Armageddon.Only on Tuesday, Putin warned that western countries would suffer 'grave consequences' if they allowed their weapons to be fired from Ukraine into Russia.'In Europe, especially in small countries, they should be aware what they are playing with,' the Russian president said during a visit to Uzbekistan.'They should remember that, as countries with small, densely populated territories... They should keep this in mind before talking about striking Russia.'Among those staring down the Russian invasion, Poland, which does not have a nuclear deterrent, has refused rule out sending troops to meet its historic foe as it plans to field the biggest army in Europe by 2035.Poland's foreign minister said the country should not exclude the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine and should keep Putin in suspense over whether such a decision would ever be made.'We should not exclude any option. Let Putin be guessing as to what we will do,' Sikorski said in an interview with the Gazeta Wyborcza daily when asked whether he would send Polish troops to Ukraine.Earlier this month, President Emmanuel Macron echoed Sikorski's sentiment, suggesting he would not be 'ruling anything out' - comments that experts said reflected a will to play Putin at his own game of 'strategic ambiguity'. 'Putin doesn't take anything off the table; neither should we. And that includes sending troops, in whichever capacity that is feasible,' Vlad Şutea, founder and lead analyst at early warning and threatcasting group T-Intelligence, told MailOnline.'Macron is one of the few Western European leaders to understand the value of strategic ambiguity,' he said.

'America is definitely your ally; hope hostages back soon' Visiting Israel, Michael Douglas suggests anti-Israel campus protesters ‘brainwashed’ On solidarity trip, Oscar-winning actor-producer tours Oct. 7 massacre sites; hosted by Herzog, describes shock of anti-Israel campus activism: ‘There’s no education, no knowledge’
By Amy Spiro-and Agencies 2 June 2024, 10:57 pm

Veteran Hollywood actor Michael Douglas met with President Isaac Herzog in Jerusalem on Sunday, after visiting the sites of Kibbutz Be’eri and the Supernova massacre where Hamas carried out atrocities on October 7.“We have met with families of the hostages, we spent the day today down in the south in the area close to Be’eri, and we saw the Nova exhibition,” Douglas told Herzog, according to the President’s Office. The Oscar-winning actor, whose father, the late actor Kirk Douglas, was Jewish, said it was “tough in Be’eri, seeing what happened” there. The Gaza border kibbutz was one of the hardest hit in the October 7 onslaught, which saw some 3,000 terrorists burst across the border into Israel by land, air and sea, killing some 1,200 people and seizing 252 hostages, mostly civilians, many amid acts of brutality and sexual assault.Douglas met with members of the kibbutz and visited burnt-out homes destroyed on October 7, where roughly 100 people were murdered and 30 taken hostage.“It’s a very difficult time. The deep shock of this whole experience. We’re just happy to be here in support of Israel, and to share with you the fact that America is definitely your ally as our president has shared with you. I just hope that the latest negotiations will be reached, and the hostages will be back soon,” the actor said.During the meeting, Herzog presented Douglas with a yellow hostage pin and a dog-tag necklace reading, “Our heart is held captive in Gaza.”In his meeting with Herzog, Douglas also referred to feeling a “big shock” from the wave of pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel protests that has swept US college campuses since October 7. He suggested that the students involved underwent “brainwashing… because when you try to talk to many of them, there is no education, there’s no knowledge.”Douglas was the latest in a line of American celebrities and politicians who have visited Israel and toured the southern area near the Gaza border since the Hamas-led massacre, with star comedian Jerry Seinfeld recently describing the trip as “the most powerful experience of my life.”Public figures, including comedian Amy Schumer and ‘Seinfeld’ actor Jason Alexander, have also been involved in social media campaigns to push for the release of the hostages still held in captivity. It is believed that 121 hostages abducted by Hamas on October 7 remain in Gaza — not all of them alive — after 105 civilians were released from Hamas captivity during a weeklong truce in late November, and four hostages were released prior to that. Three hostages were rescued by troops alive, and the bodies of 19 hostages have also been recovered, including three mistakenly killed by the military. The IDF has confirmed the deaths of 37 of those still held by Hamas, citing new intelligence and findings obtained by troops operating in Gaza. One more person is listed as missing since October 7, and their fate is still unknown.Hamas has also been holding the bodies of fallen IDF soldiers Oron Shaul and Hadar Goldin since 2014, as well as two Israeli civilians, Avera Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed, who are both thought to be alive after entering the Strip of their own accord in 2014 and 2015 respectively.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Archaeology-Flint tools for butchering deer were developed in Israel 400,000 years ago – study-TAU researchers say the stone scrapers originated near Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim in the Samarian hills, which were likely sacred sites for prehistoric humans in the area-By Gavriel Fiske-Today, 5:56 pm-JUN 3,24

Tel Aviv University researchers have identified a group of prehistoric stone tools discovered in central Israel as 400,000-year-old implements designed for butchering and processing fallow deer, the university said Monday, making the artifacts “the earliest appearance worldwide” for this specific type of tool. The flint scrapers were discovered at both the Jaljulia Cave and Qesem Cave prehistoric sites, well-explored areas located near each other in central Israel. The tools were found to be made of flint traced to sites about 20 kilometers (12 miles) east of the caves, Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim in the Samarian hills, locations that were at the time breeding grounds for the fallow deer the scrapers were designed to process.A paper on the tools, “The Stone, the Deer, and the Mountain: Lower Paleolithic Scrapers and Early Human Perceptions of the Cosmos,” was published in the journal Archaeologies in February. Research was led by Vlad Litov and Prof. Ran Barkai of the Tel Aviv University Department of Archaeology and Ancient Near Eastern Cultures. The tools belong to a class called Quina scrapers, named after the site in France where artifacts of this kind were first discovered. Quina scrapers are “characterized by a sharp working edge shaped like scales, enabling users to butcher their prey and also process the hides,” the researchers said. For more than a million years, the primary source of food, hides and other animal-derived necessities prehistoric humans needed were elephants and other large herbivores. But “about 400,000 years ago, following the elephants’ disappearance, hunters turned to a different kind of prey, considerably smaller and quicker than elephants: fallow deer,” the university statement said. The transition to smaller prey caused a great change in human society and technology, including the development of the Quina scrapers.“We found a dramatic change in the human diet during this period… Clearly, butchering a large elephant is one thing, and processing a much smaller and more delicate fallow deer is quite a different challenge. Systematic processing of numerous fallow deer to compensate for a single elephant was a complex and demanding task which required the development of new implements. Consequently, we see the emergence of the new Quina scrapers, with a better-shaped, sharper, more uniform working edge compared to the simple scrapers used previously,” author Litov said. The origin sites of the flint used to create the Quina scrapers are believed by the researchers to have had a spiritual significance for the early humans in the area. These sites at the time “were a home range of fallow deer and thus considered a source of plenty. We found a connection between the plentiful source of fallow deer and the source of flint used to butcher them, and we believe that this link held perceptual significance for these prehistoric hunters,” said Prof. Barkai.“They knew where the fallow deer came from and made special efforts to use flint from the same area to make tools for butchering this prey. This behavior is familiar from many other places worldwide and is still widely practiced by native hunter-gatherer communities,” he continued.“When the locals realized that the elephant population was dwindling, they gradually shifted their focus to fallow deer. Identifying the deer’s plentiful source, they began to develop the unique scrapers in the same place. This is the earliest instance of a phenomenon that later spread throughout the world,” Litov said. The Mount Gerizim location, near Nablus, is especially important because numerous fallow deer bones were found there at an ancient altar site. As Gerizim is associated with the Israelite’s entry into the Land of Israel and is considered a sacred site by the local Samaritan community, “apparently, the Mountains of Samaria gained a prominent, or even sacred status as early as the Paleolithic period, and retained their unique cultural position for hundreds of thousands of years,” the researchers said.

ANC loses majority in South African elections for first time since apartheid
Party, which has led international legal campaign against Israel over war with Hamas, must now build coalition to remain in power after ruling alone for three decades
By Agencies and ToI Staff Today, 7:41 pm

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — The African National Congress party lost its parliamentary majority in a historic election result Saturday that puts South Africa on a new political path for the first time since the end of the apartheid system of white minority rule 30 years ago. With more than 99 percent of votes counted, the once-dominant ANC had received just over 40% in Wednesday’s election, well short of the majority it had held since the famed all-race vote of 1994 that ended apartheid and brought it to power under Nelson Mandela. The final results are still to be formally declared by the independent electoral commission that ran the election, but the ANC cannot pass 50%.At the start of the election, the commission said it would formally declare the results by Sunday, but that could come earlier. While opposition parties have hailed the result as a momentous breakthrough for a country struggling with deep poverty and inequality, the ANC remained the biggest party by some way. However, it will now likely need to look for a coalition partner or partners to remain in the government and reelect South African President Cyril Ramaphosa for a second and final term. Parliament elects the South African president after national elections.“The way to rescue South Africa is to break the ANC’s majority and we have done that,” said main opposition leader John Steenhuisen. The way forward promises to be complicated for Africa’s most advanced economy, and there’s no coalition on the table yet.Steenhuisen’s Democratic Alliance party was on around 21% of the vote. The new MK Party of former president Jacob Zuma, who has turned against the ANC he once led, was third with just over 14% of the vote in the first election it has contested. The Economic Freedom Fighters was in fourth with just over 9%.More than 50 parties contested the election, many of them with tiny shares of the vote, but the DA and MK appear to be the most obvious for the ANC to approach, given how far it is from a majority. Which coalition the ANC pursues is the urgent focus now, given Parliament needs to sit and elect a president within 14 days of the final election results being officially declared. A flurry of negotiations are set to take place and they will likely be complicated.Steenhuisen has said his centrist party is open to discussions. The MK Party said one of their conditions for any agreement was that Ramaphosa be removed as ANC leader and president. That underlined the fierce political battle between Zuma, who resigned as South African president under a cloud of corruption allegations in 2018, and Ramaphosa, who replaced him.“We are willing to negotiate with the ANC, but not the ANC of Cyril Ramaphosa,” MK Party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndlela said.MK and the far-left Economic Freedom Fighters have called for parts of the economy to be nationalized. The Democratic Alliance is viewed as a business-friendly party and analysts say an ANC-DA coalition would be more welcomed by foreign investors, although there are questions over whether it is politically viable considering the DA has been the most critical opposition party for years. An ANC-DA coalition “would be a marriage of two drunk people in Las Vegas. It will never work,” Gayton McKenzie, the leader of the smaller Patriotic Alliance party, told South African media.Despite the uncertainty, South African opposition parties were hailing the new political picture as a much-needed change for the country of 62 million, which is Africa’s most developed, but also one of the most unequal in the world.South Africa has widespread poverty and extremely high levels of unemployment and the ANC has struggled to raise the standard of living for millions. The official unemployment rate is 32%, one of the highest in the world, and the poverty disproportionately affects Black people, who make up 80% of the population and have been the core of the ANC’s support for years. The ANC has also been blamed — and now punished by voters — for a failure in basic government services that impacts millions and leaves many without water, electricity or proper housing.Nearly 28 million South Africans were registered to vote and turnout is expected to be around 60%, according to figures from the independent electoral commission.South Africa maintained diplomatic relations with Israel after the ANC took power in 1994, despite Israel’s significant cooperation with the apartheid regime. However, owing to its identification with the Palestinian national movement, the party has been fiercely critical of Israel over the years due to its policies toward the Palestinians.Following Hamas’s October 7 terror onslaught that triggered the war in Gaza, the South African parliament voted to cut off relations with Israel until the fighting ends. In March, the country’s foreign minister, Naledi Pandor, said South African citizens serving in the IDF would be arrested upon returning to the country. In December, South Africa filed a case against Israel in the International Court of Justice, claiming that Israel is committing genocide in the Gaza Strip. In its ruling, the ICJ ordered Israel to take actions necessary to prevent violations of the 1948 Genocide Convention, but did not order Israel to its offensive in Gaza, which began following Hamas’s October 7 attack in which terrorists killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapped 252.Following a request by South Africa in May, the ICJ gave an ambiguous order calling on Israel to halt operations in Rafah, Gaza’s southernmost city, that risk destruction of civilian population. The judges disagreed between themselves regarding whether the order requires Israel to immediately halt its ongoing operation in the city.

Hezbollah downs IDF drone over south Lebanon, fires heavy rockets at base in north-Hermes 900 UAV seen crashing after being hit by surface-to-air missile; damage caused in attack on Kiryat Shmona; military hits ‘significant assets’ in overnight airstrikes
By Emanuel Fabian-Today, 3:41 pmUpdated at 5:27 pm-JUNE 1,24

An Israeli military unmanned aerial vehicle was shot down by Hezbollah over southern Lebanon on Saturday, hours after the terror group launched rockets with heavy warheads at an army base adjacent to the northern city of Kiryat Shmona. The Israel Defense Forces confirmed that one of its drones was brought down by a surface-to-air missile while operating over southern Lebanon.Hezbollah, in a statement, said it had intercepted a Hermes 900, a large surveillance and attack UAV used by the Israeli military in Lebanon, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and other fronts. The IDF said the incident was being investigated. It marked the fourth IDF drone to be shot down by Hezbollah over southern Lebanon amid the war. In all, two Hermes 450 drones and two Hermes 900 models have been downed by the terror group in recent months.Earlier Saturday, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for launching heavy “Burkan” rockets at a military base adjacent to the northern border town of Kiryat Shmona. Such rockets have a relatively short range but a large warhead, estimated in the low hundreds of kilograms of explosives.Gibor Camp, the headquarters of the IDF’s 769th Brigade, was heavily damaged in the attack, footage showed. The Kiryat Shmona municipality also said damage was caused to nearby infrastructure, property, and vehicles. The IDF said no injuries were caused in the attack, and a short while after, it struck and destroyed a rocket launcher used to launch the two projectiles with heavy warheads.Hezbollah claims responsibility for launching heavy "Burkan" rockets at a military base adjacent to Kiryat Shmona a short while ago.According to the Kiryat Shmona municipality, heavy damage was caused to infrastructure, property, and vehicles in the area. The IDF says no… pic.twitter.com/d0HZGRy7-Emanuel (Mannie) Fabian (@manniefabian) June 1, 2024-In another attack Saturday, two rockets were fired from Lebanon at the northern community of Yiftah. The IDF said both projectiles landed in open areas. Also Saturday morning, the IDF said it also struck two Hezbollah operatives who were spotted in southern Lebanon’s Majdel Selm.It published footage of the strike. The attack on Kiryat Shmona and the drone incident came after a wave of overnight fighter jet strikes against “significant assets” belonging to Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, the IDF said. The military said the strikes, carried out in Ain Qana, Hmaileh and Aadloun, were a response to rocket attacks on northern Israel on Friday. Also overnight, fighter jets struck Hezbollah observation posts in Tayr Harfa; buildings used by the terror group in Jebbayn and Khiam; a rocket launcher in Majdal Zoun used in yesterday’s attack on northern Israel; and other infrastructure in Rachaya al-Foukhar, the IDF added.Since October 8, Hezbollah-led forces have attacked Israeli communities and military posts along the border on a near-daily basis, with the group saying it is doing so to support Gaza amid the war there. So far, the skirmishes on the border have resulted in 10 civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of 14 IDF soldiers and reservists. There have also been several attacks from Syria, without any injuries.Hezbollah has named 326 members who have been killed by Israel during the ongoing skirmishes, mostly in Lebanon but some also in Syria. In Lebanon, another 62 operatives from other terror groups, a Lebanese soldier, and dozens of civilians have been killed.Israel has expressed openness to a diplomatic solution to the conflict, but has threatened to go to war against Hezbollah to restore security to the north of Israel, where tens of thousands of civilians are currently displaced.

Jerusalem fire that damaged Israel Museum building being investigated as arson-Authorities locate three separate places from where fire is believed to have been started in Valley of the Cross-By ToI Staff Today, 2:46 pm-JUN 3,24

Authorities are investigating the fire that broke out in Jerusalem’s Valley of the Cross as suspected arson, Hebrew media reported on Monday. The fire started in the valley around 12:40 p.m. on Sunday. Investigators have identified at least three locations from which the fire is believed to have started, according to the Kan public broadcaster. From the valley, which is home to an 11th-century monastery and named for a tradition connecting it to the cross on which Jesus was crucified, according to Christian belief, the fire was carried in the direction of the Israel Museum, amid high winds and exceptional heat.No further information about the investigation was available. Some 23 firefighting teams were called to the scene of the fire, along with eight firefighting planes. It was brought under control shortly before 4 p.m., the Fire and Rescue Services on Sunday.Nobody was hurt in the Israel Museum, all staff were evacuated and the museum is closed to visitors on Sundays. The museum later confirmed that although some damage was caused to the roof of the youth wing, nobody was injured and none of the museum’s works were in danger. The Israel Museum is the country’s largest cultural institution, and in 2021 was listed as the world’s 17th largest museum. It houses some 500,000 works, ranging from prehistoric to contemporary art, as well as an extensive Biblical and Holy Land archaeology collection, which has earned it a reputation as one of the world’s leading art and archeology museums. It is also home to the Dead Sea Scrolls, a set of ancient Jewish manuscripts dating back to the third century BCE. They are kept in the museum’s Shrine of the Book wing, along with several other ancient Jewish manuscripts.

Yemen’s Houthis training to invade Israel, but need a way to get there – report-Yemeni journalist tells Israeli network that attack drills using mockup of Israeli town Dimona are fully serious, and also aim to prepare for potential defense against US, alliesBy ToI Staff Today, 2:29 pm-JUN 3,24

Yemen’s Houthi rebels have in recent months carried out a series of training exercises to prepare for a potential invasion of Israel, with a local Yemeni journalist telling Israel’s Kan public broadcaster that the maneuvers are being carried out seriously. The broadcaster aired footage of Houthi forces in a live fire exercise it said was training to conquer the southern city of Dimona in Israel.Armed men were seen running house to house in a large mockup of an urban area that included over a dozen two-story buildings, apparently to represent the kind of apartment buildings the Houthis envision attacking.According to the report, the terror group has held many similar exercises in recent months against the background of the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.A local journalist in Yemen, speaking to Kan on condition of anonymity, said he had spoken to some of those who participated in the exercises and they reported that they are engaged in serious preparation. The journalist noted that the drills are also aimed at preparing for any direct confrontation with the US, UK, UAE, Israel or any other military force that they believe could attack them.Iran-aligned Houthi rebels in Yemen have launched repeated drone and missile strikes against Israel and in the Red Sea, Bab el-Mandeb Strait, and the Gulf of Aden since November in what they say is a show of support for Palestinians, as the Israel-Hamas war continues.Israel’s offensive against the terror group began on October 7 when thousands of Hamas gunmen invaded Israel’s south, killing some 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. The Houthis say the strikes are in solidarity with the people of Gaza. The Iran-backed Houthis, who seized Yemen’s capital Sanaa in 2014 and control large swaths of the country, are part of  Iran’s “axis of resistance” against Israel along with Hamas — which is also sponsored by Tehran. The Kan report included an undated recording of Houthi leader Abdulmalik al-Houthi saying that 296,000 people have undergone training and that the Houthi army can muster 350,000 fighters. He also claimed that the Houthis have carried out 719 training exercises although in the recording he didn’t specify for what purpose.Yemen is 2,000 kilometers (1,240 miles) from Israel. Kan also played a recording of Houthi leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi saying that a request had been made to the countries between Yemen and Israel that they “open land passages for the movement of hundreds of thousands of my people in order to carry out jihad in Palestine.”Al-Houthi noted that no country has responded to the request.Former Houthi senior official Ali Al Bukhaiti told Kan that the threats to invade Israel are a propaganda exercise rather than a realistic plan, as the Houthis have no navy to carry the troops to Israel and the countries in between won’t let them pass through. It is, he said, “ridiculous” to imagine the Houthis carrying out a major invasion by sea, considering the air and naval military power that Israel wields.UK-based Bukhaiti, a former spokesman for the Houthis who left the group after becoming disillusioned with it, said the Houthis had taken encouragement from the widespread reporting in the Arab and Muslim world of their threats to attack cities in Israel, which gained them praise and support. He added that the rebel group has no compunction against bombing civilians.“They are not restrained from killing tens of thousands of people,” Bukhaiti said. “They have already killed thousands of civilians.”He noted the Houthis are not worried about the consequences of any attack they may carry out, even if it draws massive retribution, believing the citizens of Yemen will weather whatever befalls the country. In January, Bukhaiti warned that eventually the Houthis will try to strike Tel Aviv. The Houthis are currently engaging in an recruitment drive to build their manpower and tying the effort to support for the Palestinians, Kan reported. Also, on Sunday, Channel 12 broadcast footage filmed for the network by a person inside Yemen who opposes the regime. The person, who greeted Channel 12 and Israelis in the videos, recorded footage from mass marches in Kahlan al-Sharaf district held in support of the Palestinians during which chants of “Death to America, Death to Israel” could be heard.Filming in the capital Sanaa, the person said, “The economic situation is very bad and there is a fear of outbreaks and disturbances in the streets due to the economic situation. People are already tired and oppose wars, people are discouraged” and worried that even if the ongoing civil war in the country is resolved, “Yemen may enter into another war with America and Israel.”But, he said, “the supporters of the Houthis are interested in war, even if the entire nation is killed and everything is destroyed.”Asked to provide visual evidence of the animosity to Israel, the person showed signs near Sanaa University reading “Boycott American and Israeli products” and a Houthi flag on which was written “Death to America, Death to Israel” and “God’s curse on the Jews.”“It is everywhere,” the person said.On Monday Israel’s air defense systems intercepted a missile apparently fired by the Houthis at the southern port city of Eilat. The Israel Defense Forces said the surface-to-surface missile, fired “from the direction of the Red Sea,” was headed toward Israel, likely aimed for Eilat, when it was shot down using the advanced Arrow system. The IDF has described past attacks from Yemen as “from the Red Sea direction.”The Iran-backed group did not immediately claim responsibility for the attack. There were no reports of injuries. The Houthis have fired several ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones at Eilat in solidarity with the Gaza Strip. The vast majority of the Iran-backed group’s projectiles have been intercepted by Israeli air defenses or missed their target. Only one Houthi projectile, a cruise missile, struck Israel, hitting an open area near Eilat. In the Red Sea, the Houthis have fired on commercial and military ships dozens of times since November. The Houthis say they are targeting ships over Israel’s offensive in Gaza against Hamas. But they have frequently targeted vessels with tenuous or no clear links to Israel, imperiling shipping in a key route for global trade between Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.Emanuel Fabian contributed to this report.

At UN nuclear meeting, European powers seek to censure Iran for lack of cooperation-Draft resolution demands Iran readmit IAEA inspectors, restore camera surveillance at nuclear sites; diplomats say US opposes action, seeking to avoid tensions before Nov. election-By AFP and ToI Staff Today, 9:48 am-JUN 3,24

Britain, France and Germany will seek to censure Iran over its lack of cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog at its board meeting on Monday despite US opposition, diplomats told AFP.According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Tehran is the only non-nuclear weapon state to enrich uranium to 60 percent, while it keeps accumulating large uranium stockpiles. That is approaching the enrichment levels of 90 percent needed for atomic weapons. It is also well above the authorized 3.67 percent used for nuclear power stations.Iran has always denied wanting to acquire a nuclear weapon, but the rapid expansion of its nuclear program has no “credible civilian justification,” said one diplomat who asked not to be named.Diplomats told AFP that submitting a motion against Iran at the Vienna meeting was driven by an “urgency to react to the gravity of the situation.”The planned resolution comes after the IAEA board passed the last one of its kind in November 2022.Even though Iran continued to significantly ramp up its nuclear program since then, the IAEA’s board has refrained from a censure. At the last board meeting in March, European powers decided to shelve their plans to confront Iran due to a lack of support from Washington. The United States denies it is hampering European efforts to hold Tehran accountable but fears a censure could aggravate Middle East tensions ahead of presidential elections in November, diplomats say.Tensions in the Middle East are running particularly high amid the ongoing war in Gaza sparked by Hamas’s October 7 terror onslaught, and as other Iranian armed proxies in the region target Israel along with US and Western targets. In April, Iran launched a massive drone and missile attack in its first ever direct assault on Israel, which in turn was reported to strike a radar system near a secretive nuclear strike.‘Essential and urgent’Cooperation between Iran and the IAEA has severely deteriorated in recent years, with the UN nuclear watchdog struggling for assurances that Iran’s nuclear program is peaceful.Diplomats say maintaining the current policy of inaction amid Iran’s escalation is no longer tenable and the US position could change ahead of the vote scheduled for later this week.In May, IAEA head Rafael Grossi visited Iran in a bid to improve cooperation, calling for “concrete results… soon.”In the meantime, the death of Iran’s president Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash last month has put negotiations on hold.Diplomats, however, suggest Iran is using the accident as an excuse to stall. The draft resolution obtained by AFP covers all the points of contention. The confidential draft says it is “essential and urgent” that Tehran provides “technically credible explanations” for the presence of uranium particles found at two undeclared locations in Iran.Furthermore, Iran has to “reverse its withdrawal of the designations of several experienced Agency inspectors,” and “without delay” reconnect the cameras used to monitor nuclear activities. The draft also notes the “concerns” surrounding “recent public statements made in Iran… regarding its technical capabilities to produce nuclear weapons and possible changes to Iran’s nuclear doctrine.”‘Wider impasse’Iran has gradually broken away from its commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal it struck with the United States, China, Russia, France, Germany and the United Kingdom. The landmark deal provided Iran sanctions relief in exchange for curbs on its atomic program. But it fell apart after the unilateral withdrawal of the United States under then-president Donald Trump in 2018.Efforts to revive the deal have so far failed.“The US has reportedly been hesitant to endorse a resolution because Tehran has previously tended to double down on the very activities that are prompting censure,” Naysan Rafati, an Iran analyst at the Crisis Group, told AFP.But Washington “will also be reluctant to publicly break with its European allies,” he added.“A showdown at the board reflects a wider impasse over Iran’s nuclear activity, with little diplomatic activity but increasing concern over a program that continues to expand in scale under limited international oversight,”

Rafati said.Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s ambassador to the international organizations in Vienna, wrote on X on Sunday that the IAEA board meeting was likely to become a turbulent one.Ulyanov wrote he hopes an “anti-Iranian resolution” will not be brought to a vote, since it risks “seriously deteriorating the situation.”Syria says several killed in alleged Israeli airstrike on Aleppo area-Unverified report from monitor claims 12 members of pro-Iran militias slain in attack on copper plant in town north of Aleppo-By ToI Staff and Agencies Today, 5:46 am-JUN 3,24

Several people were killed in alleged Israeli airstrikes outside of Aleppo, Syria’s defense ministry said early Monday.According to reports, the attack targeted a copper plant in the town of Hayyan, north of Aleppo in northern Syria.Video purporting to show the aftermath of the apparent strike showed large flames shooting out of a building.“The Israeli enemy launched an air attack from the southeast of Aleppo, targeting some positions,” Syria’s defense ministry said in a statement carried by state-run media shortly after the attack at about 12:20 a.m.“The aggression led to a number of martyrs and some material losses,” it added. No specific toll was given. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights,a Britain-based opposition war monitor, claimed that attack killed at least 12 fighters belonging to pro-Iran militias. The watchdog, which says it maintains a vast network of sources inside Syria, has been accused in the past of inflating regime losses. According to the Observatory, Hayyan is “controlled by pro-Iranian groups composed of Syrians and foreigners.”There was no comment on the strike from Israel, which has carried out hundreds of strikes inside Syria since the outbreak of that country’s civil war, mainly targeting attempts to transfer weapons to the Hezbollah terror group, an Iranian proxy, or to keep Iranian fighters themselves from gaining a foothold near Israel’s border.Aleppo sits on the opposite side of Syria from Israel, and is further than most previous attacks attributed to Israel, though Jerusalem is thought to have ordered strikes in the region before. The last alleged Israeli strike in Syria occurred on May 29, in an attack that was blamed for the death of a girl in the coastal city of Baniyas. According to the observatory, three Hezbollah members nearby were also killed in a concurrent strike. It blamed shrapnel from the Syrian interception of an Israeli missile for the girl’s killing.Alleged Israeli strikes have ramped up since the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip began on October 7, when the Iran-backed Palestinian terror group launched a massive cross-border attack on Israel that killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians.Israel responded with a military offensive to destroy Hamas and free 252 hostages that terrorists kidnapped from Israel during the October 7 onslaught and took as hostages to Gaza.Hezbollah has been exchanging near-daily fire with the Israeli army since the day after the Hamas attack. Hezbollah-led forces have attacked Israeli communities and military posts along the border on a near-daily basis, with the group saying it is doing so to support Gaza amid the war there.

Shin Bet says it foiled Hamas suicide bombing plot directed from Turkey-By Emanuel Fabian-JUN 3,24

Israel says it foiled a recent attempt by Hamas to carry out a suicide bombing attack in Israel, directed by members of the terror group in Turkey.According to the Shin Bet security agency, on March 15, Anas Shurman, a Palestinian man originally from the West Bank city of Tulkarem but who resides in Jordan, was detained in Nablus over his suspected involvement in the bombing plot. The agency says his interrogation revealed that in December 2023, he was recruited by Imad Abid, a Hamas operative living in Turkey, though also originally from the West Bank.Shurman agreed to carry out a suicide bombing on behalf of Hamas, with the target set to be in Israel proper, the Shin Bet says. The Shin Bet says that as part of the plans ahead of the attack, the would-be suicide bomber filmed a last will, took motorcycle lessons that he would have used in the attack, and received funds and instructions to carry out the bombing, including where to collect the explosive device from a hidden location in the West Bank. The large fragmentation bomb, weighing some 12 kilograms, was seized by the Shin Bet from a spring in the West Bank, the agency says. Next to the bomb, the Shin Bet says, it found written instructions on how to carry out the attack.Additional Hamas members involved in the plot were also detained, with the Shin Bet saying they were part of a terror network in Nablus. The agency says those Hamas members were involved in manufacturing the bomb and hiding it for Shurman.Shurman was charged with several severe security offenses, including “attempting to intentionally cause death” — the equivalent of attempted murder under military law — as well as membership in a terror group.Five more Nablus residents were hit with similar charges, the Shin Bet says. The agency says its investigation “reveals the entrenchment of Hamas… in Turkey and its involvement in directing terror attacks in Israel.”

Iran parliament speaker Ghalibaf launches presidential bid-By AFP-JUN 3,24

The conservative speaker of Iran’s parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, has registered his candidacy for the snap presidential election on June 28.The election was originally to be held in 2025 but was brought forward following the unexpected death of ultraconservative president Ebrahim Raisi on May 19.Raisi and seven members of his entourage, including foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, were killed when their helicopter came down on a fog-shrouded mountainside in northern Iran.Like all the other hopefuls, Ghalibaf now has to wait until June 11 to see if his candidacy is approved by the Guardian Council, a conservative-dominated, 12-strong body of jurists, either appointed or approved by the supreme leader, which vets all candidates for public office. This is Ghalibaf’s fourth run at the presidency, following bids in 2005, 2013 and 2017. On his last attempt, Ghalibaf withdrew in favor of Raisi, who finished second at the time to the moderate incumbent Hassan Rouhani.“If I don’t run for election, the work that we have started in the last few years to solve the economic problem of the people… will not be completed,” he says after submitting his registration. He adds that if he did not believe that Iran’s economic and social problems could be solved he “would never have entered the field of competition.”

Hamas suspicious of latest truce proposal, believes time is on its side — WSJ-JUN 3,24

Hamas expects a detailed written proposal of the truce deal Israel is offering, in line with the one presented by US President Joe Biden, Arab mediators tell The Wall Street Journal. The paper says Hamas wants a deal that is unambiguous and will not allow Israel to resume the war after the release of hostages — which Jerusalem has said it will indeed do.The WSJ says Hamas feels time is on its side, with Israel increasingly suffering on the global stage and ostensibly becoming a pariah state over the ongoing war.The terror group is growing confident it can survive the Israeli offensive due to the growing international pressure, the report says.

Ben Gvir: Netanyahu ‘whitewashing’ contents of hostage deal proposal-By Sam Sokol-JUN 3,24

National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir accuses Prime Minister Netanyahu of whitewashing the contents of the latest hostage deal proposal after the premier allegedly refused to disclose the full contents of the hostage deal outline announced by US President Joe Biden on Friday night.Addressing reporters at the Knesset, Ben Gvir says Netanyahu insisted that the actual proposal differs from the version presented by Biden and that “there will be no reckless deal and an end to the war without the collapse of Hamas.”“I asked him if I could look at the draft of the agreement, and he agreed and said that I could come to his office so that I could see the draft with my own eyes,” Ben Gvir says, but yesterday when he arrived he was told “there is no draft” by Netanyahu’s assistants.“This morning I also went to the Prime Minister’s Office, and there, once again, they refused to present the draft agreement to me,” he says, asserting that National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi likewise denied that such a draft existed.“If the deal is not reckless and does not include a commitment to end the war for Hamas’s collapse, why do you refuse to present it to me?” the far-right minister asks, accusing Netanyahu of “whitewashing” the outline.“If you sign a reckless deal that will bring an end to the war without the collapse of Hamas, Otzma Yehudit will dissolve the government,” he says.

Netanyahu tells Knesset committee Gaza war won’t end before Hamas is dismantled-By Lazar Berman-JUN 3,24

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee that Israel will not end the war in Gaza until it achieves its three war aims, an Israeli official tells The Times of Israel: the destruction of Hamas’s military and civil governance capabilities; the release of all hostages; and ensuring that Gaza doesn’t pose a threat to Israel. The official adds that Israel will not agree to the second phase of a deal — which would include the complete end to the war, according to US President Joe Biden in his Friday speech — if it clashes with those goals.Repeating what officials close to Netanyahu have been saying since Biden’s address, the official says that Israel’s proposal allows it to resume fighting at any time if it concludes that Hamas is buying time in the talks without intending to release all the hostages.

Maldives set to bar Israelis from visiting; Foreign Ministry issues travel warning-Israeli passport holders in Indian Ocean archipelago advised to consider leaving, as nation’s president also declares ‘Maldivians in Solidarity with Palestine’ fundraising campaign-By Lazar Berman-and Agencies 2 June 2024, 10:23 pm

The Foreign Ministry on Sunday recommended that Israelis — including those with other passports — avoid traveling to the Maldives, after the island nation announced that Israeli passport holders will be banned.Israel also recommended that citizens living in the Indian Ocean archipelago weigh leaving, as it would be difficult to assist them should they find themselves in danger.“For Israeli citizens already in the country, it is recommended to consider leaving, because if they find themselves in distress for any reason, it will be difficult for us to assist,” the Foreign Ministry ministry said in a statement. The Maldives government on Sunday announced a cabinet decision to change laws to prevent Israeli passport holders from entering the country and also establish a subcommittee to oversee the process, as public anger in the predominantly Muslim nation rises over the ongoing war in Gaza. The tiny Islamic republic of more than 1,000 strategically located coral islets is known for its secluded sandy white beaches, shallow turquoise lagoons and Robinson Crusoe-style getaways.Nearly 11,000 Israelis visited the luxury tourist hotspot last year, accounting for a tiny 0.6 percent of the Maldives’ total tourist arrivals.President Mohamed Muizzu has “resolved to impose a ban on Israeli passports,” a spokesman for his office said in a statement, without giving details of when the new law would take effect. He also announced a national fundraising campaign called “Maldivians in Solidarity with Palestine.”In December, Israel issued a travel warning to Israelis against visiting the Maldives, citing increased anti-Israel sentiment during the war with Hamas. The warning came “due to the heightened anti-Israel atmosphere, including public comments by officials. ”Israel does not have diplomatic ties with the Muslim-majority nation after they were suspended in 1974. However, Israelis have been allowed to visit the country famed for its island atolls since the Maldives lifted a previous ban on Israeli tourists in the early 1990s and moved to restore relations in 2010, though that diplomatic effort was abandoned in 2014.The war in Gaza erupted after Hamas’s October 7 massacre, which saw some 3,000 terrorists burst across the border into Israel by land, air and sea, killing some 1,200 people and seizing 252 hostages, mostly civilians, many amid acts of brutality and sexual assault.Vowing to destroy Hamas and return the hostages, Israel launched a wide-scale military campaign in Gaza that has drawn international ire as the death toll mounts and a humanitarian crisis looms in the densely-populated coastal enclave.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report. Gallant vows war won’t end until Hamas is destroyed; IDF advances further in Rafah-Defense minister says Israel ‘advancing an alternative’ to terror group’s rule; troops find rocket launchers, arms near Egypt border; fighter jets hit over 30 targets across Gaza-By Emanuel Fabian-and ToI Staff 2 June 2024, 8:16 pm

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Sunday that Israel was working on finding a replacement for Hamas’s rule in the Gaza Strip, vowing that the war will not end until the terror group is dismantled of both its military and governmental capabilities.“In any process of ending the war, we will not accept Hamas rule. We are advancing an alternative government to Hamas, within the framework of which we will isolate areas, remove the Hamas members and bring in other forces that will enable a different government,” Gallant said following an assessment at the Southern Command in Beersheba.

“On one hand, military action, and on the other, the ability to change the regime [in Gaza], will lead to the achievement of two of the goals of this war: the dismantling of the Hamas government and its military power, and the return of the hostages,” he added.Gallant’s comments came after US President Joe Biden on Friday presented what he described as the latest Israeli proposal for a hostage deal and ceasefire to end the war in Gaza. The US president’s address triggered shockwaves in the Israeli government, where far-right parties threatened to bring down the coalition if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tried to see it approved. The war cabinet convened Sunday evening to discuss the proposal and its possible implementation, given international and domestic pressure to accept the deal aimed at securing the release of 121 hostages believed to be held by Hamas in Gaza since being kidnapped on October 7.Despite Netanyahu’s insistence that there will be no permanent ceasefire in Gaza until Hamas’s military and governing capabilities are destroyed, the heads of the government’s two ultranationalist parties, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich of Religious Zionism and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir of Otzma Yehudit, both threatened Saturday night to bring down the government if the new deal is adopted.War cabinet minister Benny Gantz has also issued an ultimatum to Netanyahu, demanding last month that the premier commit to an agreed-upon vision for the Gaza conflict that would include stipulating who might rule the territory after Hamas’s defeat, and warning that he would bolt the coalition should this not happen by June 8.The deliberations came as the Israel Defense Forces pushed on with its campaign to root out Hamas in Gaza’s southernmost city of Rafah. The IDF said on Sunday that troops had recently begun to operate in the Yabna camp in central Rafah, adjacent to the border with Egypt.Troops of the Givati Brigade killed several terror operatives and located military infrastructure during recent operations in the area, the IDF said, adding that soldiers also located many weapons, including anti-aircraft machine guns.Troops of the 9th Armored Battalion, operating under the Givati Brigade in the area, located several rocket launching pits on the Gaza-Egypt border.Israeli fighter jets struck more than 30 targets across Gaza over the past day, according to an IDF update on Sunday morning. The targets included Hamas infrastructure, weapon depots and cells of gunmen.Nahal Brigade troops in Rafah also directed an airstrike against a rocket launcher, moments after it was used to attack troops in the area. There were no injuries in the rocket attack. The IDF published images of rocket launchers and a weapons depot discovered by Nahal Brigade troops in Rafah in recent days. The troops used a small drone to scan a suspicious building, where several barrels packed with explosives were located, according to the military.Over the weekend, the IDF announced the names of a number of “prominent” Hamas operatives who were killed in airstrikes in the Gaza Strip in recent days.On Thursday, fighter jets struck in central Gaza’s Nuseirat, killing Mansour Adil Mansour Kashlan, whom the IDF said was involved in advancing terror attacks in Israel and in the West Bank.“The terrorist… advanced and carried out terror activities, as well as engaged in coordination and cooperation with terror groups in the Gaza Strip and other countries,” the military said.In another strike this past week in central Gaza, carried out by a drone, Walid Abed Abu Dalal was killed. The IDF said Abu Dalal served in the terror group’s military wing, alongside his role as head of the technology department in Hamas’s internal security forces. The military noted that Hamas’s internal security forces, and especially its technology department, “harm the IDF’s freedom of action in the Gaza Strip, and are also a significant part of Hamas’s counter-espionage attempts.”In a separate strike, on Friday, also in Nuseirat, Tareq Darwish was killed. According to the IDF, Darwish was a prominent member of the Nuseirat Battalion’s aerial array. The military said he was killed following attempts in the past month to “impede the IDF’s freedom of aerial action” in Gaza. The IDF released footage of the latter strike. In another strike last week, the IDF said it killed Salame Baraka, a member of Hamas’s East Khan Younis Battalion, who also served as head of the finance department in the terror group’s police. The military said that it also targeted a building belonging to the Al-Noor organization in Gaza City last week week. According to the IDF, Al-Noor is classified as a terror group, due to its funding of Hamas. The military said Al-Noor transferred millions of dollars to Hamas for terror activity in the West Bank, as well as distributing funds to the families of Hamas operatives killed or jailed by Israel. The strike against the organization’s building in the area of Gaza City’s Daraj and Tuffah neighborhoods took place on Thursday. Also in Gaza City, the IDF said it launched a new pinpoint raid against Hamas in the Sabra neighborhood this past week, carried out by the Multi-Domain, or Ghost Unit, alongside the Carmeli and Yiftah reserve brigades, under the 99th Division.Troops of the elite Ghost Unit, alongside other forces, killed dozens of gunmen and demolished a weapons depot in Sabra over the past two days, the IDF said, adding that soldiers also located weapons and many tunnel shafts during sweeps of the area. The IDF first operated in the Sabra neighborhood during the beginning of the ground offensive last year, after Hamas started the war with its October 7 massacre, which saw some 3,000 terrorists burst across the border into Israel by land, air and sea, killing some 1,200 people and seizing 252 hostages, mostly civilians, many amid acts of brutality and sexual assault.Talks on reopening Rafah Crossing-Meanwhile, a meeting between US, Egyptian and Israeli officials was scheduled to take place on Sunday in Cairo to discuss the reopening of Gaza’s Rafah Crossing, according to a high-level source quoted by Egypt’s state-linked Al Qahera TV.Egypt is insisting that Israel withdraw its forces from the crossing, according to Al Qahera, after the IDF seized the Palestinian side of the crossing in May.In a weekly humanitarian aid summary, meanwhile, the IDF said on Sunday that 1,858 trucks carrying humanitarian aid had entered the Gaza Strip after being inspected by Israeli authorities. It said the trucks — carrying food, water, medical equipment, and shelter equipment — entered Gaza via the Kerem Shalom Crossing in the Strip’s south and the Erez West Crossing in the north of the territory. The numbers include 764 trucks from Egypt, the IDF says. Egypt had briefly halted humanitarian aid deliveries after the IDF took over the Rafah Crossing last month, before agreeing, in coordination with the United States, to resume deliveries via Kerem Shalom.Weekly summary of ongoing humanitarian efforts (26.5-1.6):????1,858 trucks entered via the Kerem Shalom and Erez West Crossings. The toll, which cannot be verified, includes some 15,000 terror operatives Israel says it has killed in battle. Israel also says it killed some 1,000 terrorists inside Israel on October 7.A total of 294 soldiers have been killed during the ground offensive against Hamas and amid operations along the Gaza border. A civilian Defense Ministry contractor has also been killed in the Strip.Agencies contributed to this report.

2 hurt as Hezbollah shells north, launches explosive drones after wave of IDF strikes-Some 40 projectiles fired in series of attacks that sparked massive fire in Golan Heights; in first, drone impacts in Nahariya, causing small blaze-By Emanuel Fabian-2 June 2024, 6:17 pm

Lebanon’s Hezbollah bombarded northern Israel with some 40 rockets in several separate barrages on Sunday, after the Israeli military carried out a wave of overnight strikes against the terror group.Explosive-laden drones were also launched from Lebanon on Sunday, as the terror group continued its attacks on the north amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip. The Israel Defense Forces said Sunday morning that it had carried out an overnight airstrike with fighter jets against a Hezbollah compound in northeastern Lebanon’s Baalbek.Baalbek, an area identified in the past as a Hezbollah stronghold, is around 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the Israeli border. The IDF said the strike came as a response to Hezbollah shooting down a military drone over southern Lebanon on Saturday. In addition to the compound, the IDF said fighter jets also struck a building used by Hezbollah in southern Lebanon’s Bint Jbeil, and command rooms in Qana and Baraachit. On Sunday morning, two explosive-laden drones were launched from Lebanon, striking open areas near the city of Katzrin in the Golan Heights, the military said. The drones sparked a fire that was extinguished a short while later. The IDF said there were no injuries in the incident.Hezbollah claimed to have targeted an Iron Dome battery in the area with several explosive drones.Sirens had sounded throughout the area during the attack, as the military attempted to intercept the devices.Later on Sunday, a barrage of at least 15 rockets was fired at Katzrin, striking open areas and sparking a large fire south of the city, according to the IDF and the Fire and Rescue Service. There were no reports of injuries in the attack.Hezbollah claimed to have fired dozens of rockets at an IDF base in the area.In other barrages on Sunday, 15 rockets were fired at the Kiryat Shmona area, and another eight were launched at the largely evacuated border community of Margaliot. According to the IDF, all of the rockets were intercepted.Another rocket attack on Kiryat Shmona lightly wounded two people, the municipality said. The city said that at least three impact sites were reported in the city, also resulting in damage. The military later said it carried out a strike against a building used by Hezbollah in southern Lebanon’s Houla, used to launch the attack on Margaliot.Lebanese media claimed that two shepherds were killed in the Houla strike. In a separate attack, a building in the border community of Metula was damaged by anti-tank missile fire from Lebanon, the IDF said. Also Sunday, several suspected drones were identified by the IDF as crossing into Israel from Lebanon, heading toward the Nahariya area on the coast. Sirens had sounded in the area amid the incident.Footage purportedly from the area showed an Iron Dome interceptor missile engaging one of the drones. The IDF said the sirens were triggered after an interceptor missile was launched at “a target suspected of being a suspicious aerial target.”The military later said the incident was over and under investigation, without elaborating further on whether or not the apparent drones were intercepted.Later in the day, another explosive drone was launched from Lebanon toward the northern coastal city, with the IDF reporting that it had attempted to intercept the device. The interception attempts failed, and the drone hit an area in the city, causing a small fire that was  being extinguished by firefighters, the military added. It marked the first time amid the war that an explosive drone hit Nahariya. Footage from Nahariya appears to show an explosive-laden drone impacting near the coast, following Iron Dome interceptions in the area. pic.twitter.com/qEK2CGJFeg— Emanuel (Mannie) Fabian (@manniefabian) June 2, 2024-There were no injuries in both incidents, which Hezbollah did not immediately claim responsibility for.The IDF said it also launched a strike Sunday against a Hezbollah weapons depot in southern Lebanon’s Mays al-Jabal.The strike was carried out after a Hezbollah operative was spotted entering the site. A short while later, a fighter jet struck the building, the military said. The IDF said secondary blasts were seen after the strike, indicating the site was used to store munitions.Since October 8, Hezbollah-led forces have attacked Israeli communities and military posts along the border on a near-daily basis, with the group saying it is doing so to support Gaza amid the war there. On Sunday, the IDF announced that it had completed a war simulation exercise over the past week, as part of preparations for an escalation in northern Israel amid daily attacks by Hezbollah. The drill, carried out by the Northern Command and other General Staff directorates and wings, included “many scenarios that simulate the expansion of the war in the northern arena, and multi-front war scenarios,” the military said.

from the blogs-The genocide claim against Israel doesn’t add up-The ratio of combatant-to-civilian casualties in Gaza should be recognized as a historical achievement of protecting civilian lives-By Shlomo Cohen and Yaacov Samet 2 June 2024, 4:41 pm

“The genocide in Gaza” cause has been roiling university campuses in the US and around the globe. The genocide accusation is the subject of a lawsuit filed by South Africa against Israel at the International Court of Justice and has been repeated by a few other countries, some scholars, endless activists, and one US congresswoman. Its political importance is not restricted to Israel. President Biden, it is argued, might be punished in the upcoming elections by progressive voters for complicity with this alleged genocide. The accusation could thus exert tremendous influence on world politics. This is a fascinating socio-political phenomenon since it is easy to prove that there is no genocide. Here we present a once-and-for-all clear-cut refutation. To sustain the charge of genocide, the Genocide Convention (1948) requires that one prove both an “intent to destroy” a group and that acts were committed to implement that intent. Since intent is elusive, battles of narratives with respect to it can be interminable. Implementation, on the other hand, refers to empirical facts, and here the numbers swiftly refute the possibility of genocide – indeed, they attest to the exact opposite. It is widely admitted that Israel has a right to retaliate against the perpetrators of the October 7 massacre and to seek to free its hostages, yet Israel is accused of leading a military offensive that resulted in an excessive – and therefore unjustified – level of civilian casualties in Gaza. While no one seems ready to offer a criterion for “excessiveness,” one parameter that would be flatly incompatible with genocide is an inordinately low combatant-to-civilian ratio. That this is precisely what the numbers show has been intimated but never properly demonstrated.Numbers provided during war are never accurate, but let us work with the numbers we have. On February 29, the Gaza authorities reported a total of 30,035 Gazans dead. On the very same day, the Israel Defense Forces tallied the number of killed Hamas militants in Gaza at “over 13,000.” (Multiple analyses – e.g. here, here, and here – make the numbers released by the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry extremely hard to believe, but we’ll treat them as accurate anyway; and if, for argument’s sake, we believe Hamas, it behooves us to believe Israel too.) During war people do not stop dying of non-war-related reasonsNow thirteen thousand militants out of 30,000 total dead spells a combatant-to-civilian ratio of 13:17. During war people do not stop dying of non-war-related reasons, however. The CIA World Factbook assesses 3/1000 deaths yearly in the Gaza Strip. This translates to about 2,500 non-war-related deaths between October 7 and February 29 (given a population of 2.1 million). Since Hamas militants make up about 1.5% of the Gazan population, virtually all these 2,500 deaths are civilians. Hence the war-related combatant-to-civilian ratio drops to 13:14.5. Of course, not all civilians who died of war-related reasons died because of Israel: Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad fired some 12,000 rockets during this war, roughly 12% of which fell within the Gaza Strip. That’s 1,440 rockets falling indiscriminately on civilians. Hamas also opened fire on civilians who tried to follow IDF instructions and evacuate the fighting zones so as to stop serving as Hamas’ human shields. And so on. We do not know how many civilians died in these ways, but it is reasonable to conclude that the combatant-civilian death ratio stands at about 13:14, which is less than 1:1.1. And now the crucial question: What should we make of this figure? It can only be evaluated meaningfully by comparison to historical references. The combatant-to-civilian ratio of wartime casualties varies widely according to the character of the war theater. A wide comparative historical analysis suggests a (conservative) ratio of 1:1 on average. Crucially, however, in urban warfare the ratios climb very sharply. The Washington DC-based Center for Civilians in Conflict reports that “In cities […] civilians account for 90 percent of the casualties during war.” Similarly, in its global survey of armed conflicts from 2011 to 2020, the NGO Action on Armed Violence found that “91% of those reported killed or injured by explosive weapons in populated areas were civilians.” Even when attacks were “explicitly coded as targeting armed actors” specifically, civilian casualties in populated areas still accounted for 69%. The (less than) 1:1.1 ratio of combatant-to-civilian casualties of war in the inordinately densely populated Gaza Strip is astonishingly low in historical comparison. Not only is this conceptually incompatible with genocide – it is its very polar opposite.Notice also that since the 1:1.1 ratio is inordinately low compared to the norm in urban warfare, then even if, hypothetically, the final true numbers turn out to be doubly worse, they would still be low in historical comparison and therefore incompatible even with a prima facie suspicion of genocide. Since nobody attributes to the IDF extreme ineptitude in killing, the 1:1.1 ratio of combatant-to-civilian casualties achieved in Gaza should be recognized as a historical achievement of protecting civilian lives. Thus the numbers also testify to a lack of genocidal intent.War is invariably replete with human tragedies. Nothing written here overlooks this. Our point is only that a historically low overall ratio of combatant-to-civilian casualties refutes the possibility of genocide. Stories of specific tragedies are surely an important aspect of the coverage of war; but focusing exclusively on those at the expense of the overall statistics amounts to informational manipulation. The conclusions presented here are based on simple reasoning and information available to all. That the ICJ judges in The Hague, who proceed with the genocide trial, cannot produce simple reasoning is deeply disturbing. If they can, yet proceed, this is alarmingly worse. The Jewish people and the Jewish State have been repeatedly victims of blood libels. This looks like yet another one – if you just do the math. –– Shlomo Cohen is an associate professor of philosophy at Ben-Gurion University, specializing in ethics, and a medical doctor. Firebomb thrown at Israeli embassy in Romania, no injuries or damage-Police say incident not linked to Gaza war, attack motivated by ‘personal grievances’ over visa rejection; suspect also tries to light himself on fire outside-By Lazar Berman-and Agencies Today, 4:51 pm-JUN 3,24

A foreign citizen was detained in Romania’s capital on Monday after allegedly attacking the entrance of the Israeli Embassy with a Molotov cocktail, causing a small fire but no casualties, local media and police reported. The 34-year-old man was apprehended by antiterrorism officers from the Romanian Intelligence Service before police arrived on the scene, Bucharest police said, adding that the suspect also tried to set himself on fire.Israel’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the suspect had pulled out the Molotov cocktail while going through a security inspection, and proceeded to throw it at a door leading into the lobby.Local media reported that the suspect was a Syrian national, and a police spokesperson told local news channel Digi24 that the incident was motivated by “personal grievances” and not by the international context of Israel’s ongoing war against the Hamas terror group in the Gaza Strip. The man had failed to “obtain a certain visa,” the spokesperson said by way of explanation but noted that an investigation into the man’s motives is still underway. The Israeli embassy confirmed the incident in an official statement, saying that the man threw the Molotov cocktail after he was approached by security. The embassy thanked the Romanian security and police forces for their “swift and efficient response.”Security was increased at Israeli embassies around the world following the unprecedented October 7 terror onslaught carried out in southern Israel by Hamas, and amid the subsequent war in Gaza.Last month, gunfire was heard near Israel’s embassy in Stockholm, and in late January, a bomb squad destroyed an explosive device inside the grounds of the embassy.Last week, an official from the Mossad intelligence agency said that Iran was behind a string of terror attacks on Israeli embassies by criminal networks in Europe, including the attempted attack on the embassy in Stockholm.Sweden later confirmed the Mossad report, saying that Iran has been carrying out activities inside the country for several years. In March, Dutch police also arrested someone suspected of throwing a burning object at Israel’s embassy in The Hague.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

After Khamenei praises October 7, PA says the war won’t help it gain independence-Iranian supreme leader says Hamas’s attack happened at the right moment for the Middle East and put Israel on the path to destruction
By Agencies and ToI Staff Today, 6:30 pm-JUN 3,24

The Palestinian people do not need wars that do not serve their ambitions for freedom and independence, the office of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said on Monday in response to remarks by Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei praising the timing of the October 7 attack.Khamenei said Monday morning that the Hamas-led onslaught on Israel had happened exactly at the moment the region needed it, when there had been a plan “by the US, Zionist individuals, their followers and some of the region’s countries to change the equation in the region.”The Palestinian presidency responded by saying such remarks were clearly aimed at sacrificing Palestinian blood and would not lead to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.Khamenei, 85, was speaking at an event to mark 35 years since the death of ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic, which replaced a US-backed monarchy. He said the October 7 attack by Palestinian Islamist terror group “was a decisive blow to the Zionist regime” and put Israel “on the path that will only end in its destruction.”Khamenei, who spoke to thousands gathered in the Khomeini mausoleum near Tehran, also said that “the Zionist regime is gradually melting before the eyes of the people of the world.”Palestinian Authority President“Sooner or later, America will have to withdraw its support,” he said.Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iran, the main Shiite Muslim power, has emerged as a bitter enemy of Israel and Israel’s Western allies, the United States and Britain.Iran is under international sanctions over its contested nuclear program, which it insists is for civilian purposes despite evidence to the contrary. While Israel and Iran have long fought a shadow war of killings and sabotage, Iran funds various proxy terror groups across the Middle East, including Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, to fight the Jewish state directly. As the fighting in Gaza between Hamas and Israel raged after October 7, Tehran launched a barrage of rockets and missiles at Israel, most of which were intercepted with the help of Israel’s allies.Iran has said it had no advance knowledge of Hamas’s October 7 attack but has praised it since. The war in Gaza was launched by the unprecedented attack, in which Hamas terrorists murdered some 1,200 people and took 252 hostages. In response, Israel launched a ground invasion in the Gaza Strip with the proclaimed objectives of dismantling Hamas and getting the hostages back. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 36,000 people in the Strip have been killed or are presumed dead in the fighting so far, though only some 24,000 fatalities have been identified at hospitals. The toll, which cannot be verified and does not differentiate between terrorists and civilians, includes some 15,000 terror operatives Israel says it has killed in battle. Israel also says it killed some 1,000 terrorists inside Israel on October 7.The Israeli army has lost 294 soldiers during the ground offensive against Hamas and amid operations along the Gaza border. A civilian Defense Ministry contractor has also been killed in the Strip. It is believed that 120 hostages remain in Gaza — not all of them alive.

'The bigger the fire, the slower the restoration' Hezbollah rockets spark fires burning 10,000 dunams of open areas in north-Nature and Parks Authority official says it will take years for local flora to repair itself after Sunday blaze destroyed parts of Yehudiya Forest Nature Reserve

Rockets fired by Hezbollah at the north of the country on Sunday caused bushfires that consumed 10,000 dunams of foliage in open areas, including nature reserves, the Israel Nature and Parks Authority said.Dozens of firefighters worked for hours to gain control of the blaze that was started by a barrage of rockets fired at the town of Katzrin on the Golan Heights and other areas. Some areas were still burning on Monday.Sharon Levi, director of INPA’s Golan District, told the Ynet news outlet on Monday that the fire had caused damage to the Yehudiya Forest Nature Reserve, burning areas that include hiking trails, and the reserve’s Black Canyon.Though the trails will soon be reopened, it will take the flora a long time to recover, he said.“A fire of 10,000 dunams (2,471 acres) is a big fire,” Levi said.Though “nature has the ability to restore,” he added, “the bigger the fire — the slower the restoration.”Levi explained it takes time for trees to regrow and for animals to repopulate affected areas.“Some things are restored within a year, and some are restored within several years, but in the end, the area will be restored,” he said.Hezbollah fired at least 40 rockets in several barrages on Sunday after the Israeli military carried out a wave of overnight strikes against the terror group.A barrage of at least 15 rockets was fired at Katzrin, striking open areas and sparking a large fire south of the city, according to the IDF and the Fire and Rescue Service. There were no reports of injuries in the attack.Hezbollah claimed to have fired dozens of rockets at an IDF base in the area.It took 15 fire trucks and crews and six firefighting planes to gain control of the blaze. In other barrages on Sunday, 15 rockets were fired at the Kiryat Shmona area, and another eight were launched at the largely evacuated border community of Margaliot. According to the IDF, all of the rockets were intercepted.Another rocket attack on Kiryat Shmona lightly wounded two people, the municipality said.In the area of Kiryat Shmona, Yiftach, and Aniam a further 1,200 dunams were burned due to fires started by rockets. Of those, 750 dunams were from the Mordot Harei Naftali nature reserve, Eran Himes, director of the Upper Galilee division of the INPA, said in a statement. The fire damaged one of the oldest Mount Atlas pistachio trees in the reserve, he noted. Some of the trees in the area are at least 400 years old. There have also been fires on the Lebanese side of the border due to IDF retaliatory strikes at Hezbollah. On Monday, more rocket fire started another blaze in the north.A large fire blazed in the Ramim Ridge area, near Kiryat Shmona, reportedly as a result of rocket impacts in the area over the previous 24 hours. The Fire and Rescue Services said nine firefighting teams were called out to tackle the fire. Meanwhile, the service said firefighting efforts also continued dealing with the fire that started the day before near Katzrin.Since October 8, Hezbollah-led forces have attacked Israeli communities and military posts along the border on a near-daily basis, with the group saying it is doing so to support Gaza amid the war against Hamas there. In Lebanon, another 62 operatives from other terror groups, a Lebanese soldier, and dozens of civilians have been killed.Israel has expressed openness to a diplomatic solution to the conflict, but has threatened to go to war against Hezbollah to restore security to the north of Israel, from where tens of thousands of civilians are currently displaced.

Subduction zone splay faults compound hazards of great earthquakes-Date:May 20, 2024-Source:Virginia Tech-Summary:Groundbreaking research has provided new insight into the tectonic plate shifts that create some of the Earth's largest earthquakes and tsunamis.

Groundbreaking research has provided new insight into the tectonic plate shifts that create some of the Earth's largest earthquakes and tsunamis."This is the first study to employ coastal geology to reconstruct the rupture history of the splay fault system," said Jessica DePaolis, postdoctoral fellow in Virginia Tech's Department of Geosciences. "These splay faults are closer to the coast, so these tsunamis will be faster to hit the coastline than a tsunami generated only from a subduction zone earthquake."Subduction zones around the world, areas where one tectonic plate shifts under another, create the largest earthquakes -- those over magnitude 8.0 -- triggering tsunamis and altering ecosystems in their wake. DePaolis, along with Tina Dura, assistant professor of natural hazards, and colleagues from the United States Geological Survey, found evidence that splay faults, the crustal faults connected to the subduction zones, may shift during subduction zone earthquakes and contribute to local coastal destruction and ecological change more regularly than previously realized.Such a shift of the splay fault underwater can create a tsunami that could reach the nearest shores in 30 minutes or less, DePaolis said.Published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, the study should affect hazard awareness at subduction zones around the world. Splay faults exist at subduction zones bordering Ecuador, Cascadia, Chile, and Japan, suggesting they may contribute to tsunami hazards at those locations as well. When tectonic plates shift at a subduction zone, it occurs miles under the ocean surface. Because splay faults are connected to these zones, their location makes researching them a challenge.Fortunately, secondary, or surface level, effects of these shifts have been geologically recorded on Montague Island in Prince William Sound in Alaska, making it the only current land mass to sit atop a splay fault to exhibit such effects in its soil.Typically, the resultant lifting of land from the tectonic plate shifting beneath it, called uplift, from subduction zone earthquakes can be as much as 1 to 3 meters. This is true for most onshore locations impacted by the 1964 earthquake, which hit 9.2 on the Richter scale. However, on Montague Island, splay faults created 11 meters of uplift and initiated drainage of a coastal lagoon, effectively altering its ecosystem from a marine lagoon to a freshwater bog."The island is kind of stuck in the middle of these splay faults, so anytime these splay faults rupture, it's actually recording the uplift," DePaolis said. "It has this exaggerated uplift that's just not common in subduction zone-only earthquakes."DePaolis and her team examined the effects of the splay fault ruptures on Montague Island. By analyzing 42 sediment cores, they found stratigraphic evidence of the 1964 earthquake and a secondary shift caused by the splay fault. They noticed there was a clear sedimentary change from pre-earthquake lagoon silt to post-earthquake rooted soil."There are definitely islands that uplift with subduction zone earthquakes, but they don't necessarily have faults going through them causing that exaggerated uplift, so it's a really unique place," said Dura, an affiliated faculty member of the Global Change Center and the Fralin Life Sciences Institute.Researchers have believed that a secondary shift from the splay faults was possible. But that idea has been only theoretical until now because this is the first known land mass to record the stratigraphic evidence.Team members also utilized diatoms, a type of siliceous microalgae preserved within the sediments that is sensitive to changes in salinity, to reconstruct the paleoenvironmental changes that occurred following the 1964 earthquake. They found a clear shift from a highly saline marine lagoon environment out of the reach of tides, indicating uplift of the coast.Comparing the findings of the 1964 earthquake core samples to samples deeper in the coastal stratigraphy, the research team discovered sedimentary and diatom evidence of three other instances where the splay fault ruptured. This evidence correlated with four of the last eight documented subduction zone earthquakes in the region."There's a huge amount of displacement on these faults that can create those really quick, local, large tsunamis," DePaolis said. "So you have that local tsunami coming in really quickly and right behind that, you're going to have the tsunami that was created by the subduction zone itself. All of a sudden you're having these massive and destructive tsunamis kind of coming in rapidly one after another."Story Source:Materials provided by Virginia Tech. Lake tsunamis pose significant threat under warming climate-Date: May 6, 2024-Source:Seismological Society of America-Summary:The names might not be familiar -- Cowee Creek, Brabazon Range, Upper Pederson Lagoon -- but they mark the sites of recent lake tsunamis, a phenomenon that is increasingly common in Alaska, British Columbia and other regions with mountain glaciers. Triggered by landslides into small bodies of water, most of these tsunamis have occurred in remote locations so far, but geologists say it may just be a matter of time before a tsunami swamps a more populated place.

The names might not be familiar -- Cowee Creek, Brabazon Range, Upper Pederson Lagoon -- but they mark the sites of recent lake tsunamis, a phenomenon that is increasingly common in Alaska, British Columbia and other regions with mountain glaciers.Triggered by landslides into small bodies of water, most of these tsunamis have occurred in remote locations so far, but geologist Bretwood Higman of Ground Truth Alaska said it may just be a matter of time before a tsunami swamps a more populated place like Portage Lake near Whittier, Alaska. When he estimates where the risk of an Alaskan lake tsunami is highest, Portage Lake "is pretty much at the top of my list," Higman said.Other sites in Alaska where the risks of lake tsunamis coincide with human activity and infrastructure include Eklutna, Seward, Valdez, Juneau, Grewingk Lake in Kachemak Bay State Park and Index Lake near Glacier View.At the Seismological Society of America (SSA)'s 2024 Annual Meeting, Higman discussed the importance of assessing sites like Portage Lake for the possibility of lake tsunamis, in part by using distinctive seismic signals connected to landslides."There are some cases where there are dramatic and very distinctive precursory seismic signals that precede a catastrophic landslide, sometimes by as much as days," Highman noted. "If we could get to the point where we understood these and knew how to detect them, they could be really useful."Higman calls lake tsunamis "an emerging, climate-linked hazard." The geological conditions that underlie the events in places like Alaska are usually similar. Higher temperatures melt the glaciers that buttress the walls of the valley that cradles the shrinking glacier. Without the glacier in place to hold them up, the valley walls are more prone to landslide, either into an existing body of water or a new lake created by the glacier melt. In other areas, warming conditions are weakening permafrost that may be important to the stability of slopes above lakes."This is something that historically has been a pretty rare event, but in the last few years there have been a really surprising number of these," said Higman. The 2020 Elliot Creek tsunami in a glacial valley in British Columbia, for instance, featured a landslide measuring 18 cubic million meters in volume and a tsunami runup of more than 100 meters.Forest and salmon habitat were the main casualties of that tsunami, but Higman and his colleagues are looking at these remote but dramatic events to find ways to prepare for tsunamis in places with more infrastructure. "There are places where we see the same kinds of geologic instability that preceded these other events, but there are a lot of people exposed," said Higman.Higman said there are some parallels between the tectonic faults that seismologists usually study and "the behaviors that we're seeing in the failure surface of these very large landslides," suggesting that they also offer one way to study fault dynamics in miniature.Story Source:Materials provided by Seismological Society of America. Researchers introduce new way to study, help prevent landslides-Date: April 26, 2024-Source:Rochester Institute of Technology-Summary: Landslides are one of the most destructive natural disasters on the planet, causing billions of dollars of damage and devastating loss of life every year. A global team of researchers has provided help for those who work to predict landslides and risk evaluations.

Landslides are one of the most destructive natural disasters on the planet, causing billions of dollars of damage and devastating loss of life every year. By introducing a new paradigm for studying landslide shapes and failure types, a global team of researchers has provided help for those who work to predict landslides and risk evaluations.Rochester Institute of Technology Ph.D. student Kamal Rana (imaging science) was a lead author on a paper recently published in Nature Communications announcing the research, along with co-author Nishant Malik, assistant professor in RIT's School of Mathematics and Statistics. Kushanav Bhuyan, from the University of Padova and Machine Intelligence and Slope Stability Laboratory, was also a lead co-author.Current predictive models rely on databases that do not generally include information on the type of failure of mapped landslides. By using the aerial view and elevation data of landslide sites combined with machine learning, the researchers were able to achieve 80-94 percent accuracy in identifying landslide movements in diverse locations around the world. Specifically, the study introduces a method of examining slides, flows, and fails, finding distinct patterns.Researchers studied landslides around the world, like the 2008 disaster in Beichuan, China, to develop a new paradigm to understand their movements and failure types."Our algorithm is not predicting landslides," explained Malik. "But the people who are in the business of predicting landslides need to know more information about them, like what caused them and what mechanisms they were."Various locations were studied, including Italy, the United States, Denmark, Turkey, and China. The wide array of countries helped confirm the strength of the findings, since they can be successfully utilized in diverse regions and climates."It was quite exhilarating when we saw the success numbers," said Bhuyan. "We got the results, which are really good, but we need to be able to connect this to reality."The real-world application of this research has a personal impact for Rana, who is from the Himalayan region of India."I have seen so many cases when landslides have occurred," said Rana. "The roads are blocked for two or three weeks. There is no communication from the cities to the villages. It blocks people from going to their jobs or students going to school."The hope is that this deeper understanding of failure movements will help those who work to predict deadly events and enhance the accuracy and reliability of hazard and risk assessment models, which will help save lives and reduce damage.Along with Rana, Bhuyan, and Malik, co-authors of the paper include Joaquin V. Ferrer, Fabrice Cotton, and Ugur Ozturk from the University of Potsdam, and Filippo Catani from the University of Padova.Story Source:Materials provided by Rochester Institute of Technology. Surprising insights about debris flows on Mars-Research pushes the presence of water on Mars further into the past-Date:March 14, 2024-Source:Utrecht University-Summary:The period that liquid water was present on the surface of Mars may have been shorter than previously thought. Channel landforms called gullies, previously thought to be formed exclusively by liquid water, can also be formed by the action of evaporating CO2 ice, according to a new study.

The period that liquid water was present on the surface of Mars may have been shorter than previously thought. Channel landforms called gullies, previously thought to be formed exclusively by liquid water, can also be formed by the action of evaporating CO2 ice. That is the conclusion of a new study by Lonneke Roelofs, a planetary researcher at Utrecht University. "This influences our ideas about water on Mars in general, and therefore our search for life on the planet." The results of the study are published this week in the journal Communications Earth and Environment."The Martian atmosphere is 95% CO2," Lonneke Roelofs explains. "In winter, air temperatures drop below -120 degrees Celsius, which is cold enough for CO2 in the atmosphere to freeze." In the process of freezing, CO2 gas can change directly to CO2 ice, skipping the liquid phase. The process is similar to frost on Earth, where water vapour forms ice crystals and blankets the landscape in a white film. Warmer spring temperatures, combined with the thin Martian atmosphere, causes CO2 ice to evaporate directly back to gas, again skipping the liquid phase. "We call that 'sublimation'. The process is extremely explosive due to Mars' low air pressure. The created gas pressure pushes sediment grains apart causing the material to flow, similar to debris flows in mountainous areas on Earth. These flows can reshape the Martian landscape -- even in the absence of water."Scientists have long hypothesised that CO2 ice could be a driving force behind these Martian landscape structures. "But those hypotheses were mainly based on models or satellite studies," Roelofs explains. "With our experiments in a so-called 'Mars chamber', we were able to simulate this process under Martian conditions. Using this specialised lab equipment we could directly study this process with our own eyes. We even observed that debris flows driven by CO2 ice under Martian conditions flow just as efficiently as the debris flows driven by water on Earth."Extraterrestrial life"We know for sure that there was once water on the surface of Mars. This study does not prove the contrary," Roelofs says. "But the emergence of life likely needs a long period where liquid water was present. Previously, we thought that these landscape structures were formed by debris flows driven by water, because of their similarity to debris flow systems on Earth. My research now shows that, in addition to debris flows powered by water, the sublimation of frozen CO2 can also serve as a driving force behind the formation of these Martian gully landscapes. That pushes the presence of water on Mars further into the past, making the chance of life on Mars smaller." And that makes us even more unique than we thought. Why Mars? But what makes someone interested in landscapes 330 million km away? "Mars is our closest neighbour. It's the only other rocky planet close to our solar system's 'green zone'. The zone is precisely far enough from the sun to allow for liquid water to exist, a prerequisite for life. So Mars is a place where we possibly can find answers to questions about how life developed, including potential extraterrestrial life," answers Roelofs. "Plus, studying the formation of landscape structures on other planets is a way for us to step outside our Earthly context. You ask different questions, which leads to new insights on processes here on Earth. For example, we can also observe the process of gas-driven debris flows in pyroclastic flows around volcanoes, here on Earth. So this research could contribute to a better understanding of terrestrial volcanic hazards."Story Source: Materials provided by Utrecht University. Everything You Need to Know About the 2024 Hurricane Season Prediction-Rebecca Norris-Sat, June 1, 2024 at 9:00 a.m. EDT

It’s unofficially summer which means hurricane season is kicking into full gear. Every June to November, meteorologists study the earth’s atmosphere to calculate just how treacherous hurricane season might be. This year, it looks like unprecedented storms are on the way for the Atlantic coast.According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, there’s an 85 percent chance that the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season will be above average, a 10 percent chance that it will be average, and a 5 percent chance that it will be below average. More specifically, NOAA hypothesizes there will be 17 to 25 named storms with winds above 39 miles per hour, with eight to 13 of them projected to become actual hurricanes with winds 74 mph or higher. But that’s not all. NOAA also expects there to be four to seven major hurricanes that rank as category 3,4, or 5 with winds above 111 mph. Before you start to panic, know this: Forecasters are only 70 percent confident in these ranges. Still, considering one of the strongest El Niños ever observed is dwindling and Atlantic temperatures are at near record highs, researchers can’t help but consider how it will affect La Niña conditions, and how they can help prepare the communities bound to be most impacted by an enhanced hurricane season.“With another active hurricane season approaching, NOAA’s commitment to keeping every American informed with life-saving information is unwavering,” NOAA Administrator Rick Spinrad, Ph.D., said in a statement. “AI-enabled language translations and a new depiction of inland wind threats in the forecast cone are just two examples of the proactive steps our agency is taking to meet our mission of saving lives and protecting property.”Additionally, this season, NOAA will be able to send out immediate storm warning updates, as opposed to the typical 6-hour cycle. This modification will make for more accurate storm communication, which will in effect protect communities along the coast, as well as those more inland. All in all, while summer fun ramps up, make sure to keep an eye on the forecast, especially if you live along the coast. Being proactive about your storm plan is the best way to avoid a hurricane season disaster.

Planetary parade to light up morning sky in coming days-CBC-Mon, June 3, 2024 at 12:00 p.m. EDT

Waterloo region skywatchers are in for a celestial treat this week.Six of the solar system's planets will be lined up in the early-morning hours, with most of them visible without a telescope."It's basically just by chance," said Roan Hagger, postdoctoral fellow and outreach coordinator with the Waterloo Centre for Astrophysics."All of the planets orbit around our sun," he said. "They move around the sun in these big circles, and it means sometimes they're on one side of the sun, sometimes on the other side of the sun.""It just happens at the moment that six of them are all round the same side of the sun, and so from here on Earth, it looks like they're in the same patch of the night sky."Hagger said all planets except Venus will be visible, but a telescope or pair of binoculars will be needed to see Uranus and Neptune."The other four, as long as you're under the right conditions, then you should be able to see them with the naked eye," he said.Hagger said events like this help people "realize our place in the universe.""It's one of the times when the things that we learn about in quite an abstract way, you can actually see in real life, right?" he said. "We all learn about the planets when we're in school. We see these posters of them all lined up, but it's a very different thing to actually go outside and see them in the night sky with your own eyes and look at them lined up across the sky."The parade, Hagger said, will be visible shortly before sunrise over the next few days in the east, or southeast, portion of the sky.The planets will also be very low, near the horizon, so a viewing spot that offers a clear view of the eastern horizon will be key. However, it will be difficult to see in places with lots of light pollution, so Hagger advises people to get away from towns and cities for the best view.In any case, NASA has advised people to temper expectations when attempting to view the parade of planets."Some online sources have shared excitement about a 'parade of planets' visible in the morning sky in early June (June 3 in particular)," the agency wrote. "In reality, only two of the six planets supposedly on display (Saturn and Mars) will actually be visible.""In early June, Jupiter and Mercury will be at or below the horizon in morning twilight and not visible; Uranus and Neptune are far too faint to see without a telescope, especially as the morning sky brightens. The closest thing to a planet parade will be June 29, when Saturn, the Moon, Mars, and Jupiter will line up across the morning sky."In any case, there's some good news for those who miss this month's event."This is kind of a bit of a warm-up, my opinion, to next year in February when we're going to be able to see all seven planets in the night sky at the same time," Hagger said. "That's a much-rarer thing."

Interpol issues call for biometrics firm to provide mobile data collection devicesMay 27, 2024, 2:33 pm EDT-Joel R. McConvey

Interpol has issued a tender for mobile biometric collection (MBC) devices for collecting fingerprints and facial images. Specifically, the project focuses on two “lots” – “Highly Mobile Search Only Devices” and “Portable Search and Store Devices.”“The objective of this call for tender is to issue a framework contract for 5 years with suppliers to procure and deliver various MBC devices (hardware & software solution),” says the document. “Biometrics are a critical identification tool, utilized by both Interpol and Member Countries on an international and national level. The value of biometric data is directly linked to the quality of that data; collection of high-quality biometric data is therefore key.”For both lots, fingerprint and face biometric quality control are essentials, as is a clean bill from Interpol’s security audit. Per the Terms of Reference, “the devices must be capable of capturing good quality fingerprint and facial image data, packaging that data in an Interpol-compliant NIST that can then be extracted and be compared against Interpol’s biometric databases. It is important to note that in both scenarios, the ‘search’ will not be performed locally on the device. The ability to perform identification or verification locally on the device will be considered an optional ‘nice to have’ feature.”In other words, the product can be either a software SDK to be installed on Interpol devices, or a self-contained hardware device with integrated biometric functionality. All equipment and software is to be delivered “as complete and ready for immediate use upon delivery” to the Interpol General Secretariat in Lyon, France, or to a recipient member country specified by Interpol. At the end of the open call, “the Organization shall draw up a list of one or more approved suppliers per each Lot.” Suppliers will be expected to deliver “training on the equipment being supplied and to indicate the maintenance and support procedure, and the warranty period.”A nugget buried in the Terms of Reference hints at an extra opportunity for interested biometrics and digital ID providers. “In addition to the equipment requested in these Technical Specifications,” it says, “Bidder(s) are allowed to present a catalog of products that, even if not explicitly listed in ‘Annex 1 List of biometric collection equipment’, may be deemed beneficial to Interpol.” The international crime fighting organization is apparently not opposed to a little impulse buying.Full technical and financial specifications are available in a downloadable document package.Deadline for submission of bids is June 28, 2024. There are still complaints in Kenya that digital ID cards applied for many months ago are still to be issued by authorities. In response, the government has explained that the ID issuance process faced a snag following a court injunction placed on the Maisha Namba process in December, prompting a huge backlog to grapple with, local portal Kenyans reports. However, it says the problem almost now a thing of the past. The high court in Nairobi had halted the process of issuing Maisha Namba digital IDs following a lawsuit related to data protection and privacy. However, the injunction was lifted in February.According to Huduma Kenya – the government project which oversees the country’s digital transformation strategy – the problems have now been sorted out and issuance will get back to normal very soon.“The issue has been resolved, and we are working to reduce the backlog and have your ID ready soon,” the body said in a statement quoted by the media. Also, as announced by Interior Secretary at the end of last year, Huduma Kenya has reiterated that anyone seeking to replace their national ID card must pay the sum of 1,000 Kenyan shilling (US$ 7.5).In the meantime, Huduma Kenya also raised concerns, as reported by The Star, about the huge number of uncollected identity credentials, urging applicants to look out for their national IDs, birth certificates or driver’s licenses. The office said there are at least 138,000 uncollected national ID cards, over 54,000 birth certificates, and over 40,000 driver’s licenses still idling in the drawers.Last month, Kenya announced the opening of new digital ID registration centers and the involvement of local chiefs in sensitization campaigns as part of efforts to ramp up registration for birth certificates and the Maisha digital ID.In April, authorities also set a target of issuing at least three million ID cards and one million passports before the end of this year.

Understanding and combating online gaming fraud-Jun 2, 2024, 5:20 pm EDT-By Mohini Sahu, marketing executive at IDcentral

The world of online gaming is booming, with millions logging in daily to battle, build, and explore. But alongside the fun comes a dark side: fraud. Fraudsters are as creative as game developers, constantly concocting new schemes to exploit players and gaming companies alike. This blog delves into the world of online gaming fraud, exploring the factors contributing to its rise, the different types of scams plaguing players and developers, and the essential steps you can take to stay safe. The exponential growth of online gaming: A breeding ground for fraud-The online gaming industry is experiencing explosive growth. A recent report by Newzoo estimates the global gaming market to reach a staggering $218.7 billion by 2024. This growth is fueled by several factors:Accessibility: The rise of mobile gaming has made participation more accessible than ever. Players can now access their favorite games on the go, further blurring the lines between the real and virtual worlds Free-to-Play Model: Many popular games adopt the free-to-play model, where basic gameplay is free, but in-game purchases fuel additional features, cosmetics, or progression. This model attracts a wider audience but also creates a lucrative black market for virtual goods.Evolving In-Game Economies: Many games feature complex economies with virtual currencies, tradable items, and character customization options. These economies hold real-world value, making them attractive targets for fraudsters. The sheer volume of players and the financial value associated with in-game assets create a breeding ground for fraud. Between 2022 and 2024, fraud in the online gaming sector increased by 64% year-over-year. Fraud losses for mobile casinos and betting platforms alone totaled $1.2 billion between 2022 and 2023. These fraudulent activities not only result in direct financial losses but also lead to reputational damage and increased scrutiny from regulators.Exposing weaknesses in online gaming-Several factors contribute to the vulnerability of online gaming platforms to fraud:Account Security: Weak passwords, phishing attacks, and a lack of two-factor authentication can leave player accounts vulnerable to takeover. Once compromised, fraudsters can steal valuable in-game items, disrupt gameplay, or even sell the account on the black market.Payment Systems: The convenience of in-game transactions can also be a double-edged sword. Fraudsters can exploit weaknesses in payment processing systems to steal credit card information or use stolen details to purchase virtual goods.Botting: Bots are automated scripts that can perform repetitive in-game tasks. While some bots might be used for harmless purposes, malicious bots can unfairly dominate matches, farm in-game currency, and manipulate the virtual economy.Chargebacks: The ease of initiating chargebacks on digital purchases can be abused by players who dispute legitimate transactions. This can lead to significant financial losses for game developers.Unregulated In-game Marketplaces: Some games allow players to trade virtual items with each other. These marketplaces can become breeding grounds for scams, with fraudsters selling fake items or using stolen accounts to make transactions. These vulnerabilities highlight the diverse range of threats players and developers face in the online gaming landscape.Case studies of online gaming fraud and prevention strategies-Here are some detailed case studies of online gaming fraud that illustrate the various methods fraudsters use and the measures companies have taken to combat these threats:Sportsbet’s fraud reduction-Sportsbet, an Australian online betting company had to tackle its high fraud rates. By integrating advanced fraud detection tools, Sportsbet reduced fraud losses by over 80% and chargebacks by more than 82%. The strategy involved using real-time insights to distinguish between legitimate and fraudulent activities without disrupting the user experience. This approach combined strong customer authentication, payment optimization, and sophisticated fraud and abuse prevention measures.Gamer arena’s risk intelligence-Gamer Arena, an esports platform in Turkey, faced significant challenges with users creating multiple accounts to exploit sign-up bonuses. By implementing advanced device fingerprinting and risk indicators, Gamer Arena was able to identify and block users who were using proxy servers, automated scripts, and anti-fingerprinting tools to create fake accounts. This not only protected their sign-up bonus system but also enhanced overall platform security.Money laundering in online games-Online games have been used for money laundering due to their virtual currencies and in-game items that can be exchanged for real money. For instance, Linden Lab’s Second Life required all users to register with its subsidiary Tilia Inc., a money service business, to comply with anti-money laundering (AML) regulations. This case highlights the necessity for gaming companies to implement robust KYC (Know Your Customer) and AML controls to prevent financial crimes.Common types of fraud in online gaming-Fraudsters employ a variety of tactics to exploit online gaming platforms. Here’s a closer look at some of the most common ones:Account Takeover (ATO): Fraudsters trick or coerce players into revealing their login credentials or exploit weak security measures to gain access to their accounts. This constitutes a form of identity theft, granting them unauthorized access to a player’s virtual identity. Once in control, they can steal valuable in-game items, disrupt gameplay, or even sell the account for real-world money.Phishing Scams: Phishing emails or messages disguised as official game communications are a common way to steal login credentials. These messages often lure players with promises of free in-game items or exclusive content, tricking them into clicking on malicious links or entering their login details on fake websites.Payment Fraud: This involves the unauthorized use of credit cards or other payment methods to purchase in-game items. Stolen credit card details can be used to make fraudulent purchases, or compromised accounts can be exploited for the same purpose.Chargeback Fraud: This occurs when players initiate a chargeback on a legitimate transaction, claiming they did not authorize the purchase. This can be particularly damaging for game developers, as they may lose revenue and incur fees associated with disputed transactions.Virtual Item Scams: Fraudsters may advertise or sell fake in-game items through unofficial channels. These items may not exist, or players may receive worthless substitutes after paying real-world money.Match Manipulation: This can include throwing matches for betting purposes, colluding with opponents to fix the outcome, or using hacks and exploits to gain an edge. These actions not only ruin the competitive integrity of the game but also erode trust within the gaming community. The future of online gaming: A collaborative effort against fraud-The booming online gaming industry, fueled by mobile accessibility, free-to-play models, and complex virtual economies, presents a double-edged sword. While these factors contribute to its popularity, they also attract fraudsters. Players face a range of threats, from account takeovers to fake item sales. Developers grapple with botting, chargeback fraud, and match manipulation. However, the future of online gaming isn’t written in stone. By working together, we can create a more secure environment for everyone. Players can take proactive measures like using strong passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and remaining vigilant against scams. Developers can implement robust security measures, educate their player base, and collaborate with payment processors to combat fraud.KYC verification: A cornerstone of security-Verifying user identities during account creation remains a cornerstone of online gaming security. KYC (Know Your Customer) verification strengthens this foundation. Automated KYC checks and AI-powered document verification ensure real people are behind the accounts, significantly reducing the risk of account takeovers and fake profiles. This translates to a safer and more trustworthy environment for players, fostering a loyal and engaged community. Remember, a secure platform not only protects your players’ virtual assets but also builds trust and loyalty – key ingredients for a thriving online game.

Déjà vu BIPA lawsuits filed against Walmart, Target-Judge recommends against Amazon dismissal motion-May 31, 2024, 4:53 pm EDT    | Chris Burt

Three of the largest retailers in America are each facing accusations of violating Illinois’ biometric data protection law in court. One lawsuit is recommended to proceed to trial, a potential class action follows a familiar pattern, and another is a near-replica of a complaint filed earlier this year.Amazon should face allegations of Biometric Information Privacy Act violations for services it provided to Take-Two Interactive, a federal judge recommended this week, Law360 writes. Magistrate Judge Michelle L. Peterson directed the recommendation to District Judge Tana Lin, who is hearing argument for the case’s dismissal.Peterson says that Amazon’s assertions that it did not have access to the plaintiff’s biometric data and was not aware it possessed his data cannot be granted as fact at the pleading stage. The court is obliged to consider plausible factual allegations as true-The plaintiff’s biometrics were captured for the game NBA2K21 on Xbox One, and allegedly passed on to Amazon without the proper disclosure and consent.Amazon is also being sued for alleged BIPA violations with its employee time and attendance system.A former Walmart employee accuses the company of violating BIPA’s informed consent and data sharing rules with its fingerprint time-tracking and payroll system, Top Class Actions reports.Plaintiff Joann Davis alleges in a Federal Court lawsuit that she was informed her fingerprint biometrics would be used by the employee management system, but not of the details BIPA requires.Walmart has already settled a BIPA case against former employees, agreeing to pay out $10 million back in 2021.Target has been accused in the Northern District of Illinois by three people of collecting biometrics for theft-prevention without gathering informed consent, in a complaint spotted by Law360.The three named plaintiffs allege that Target employees say the retailer sometimes waits for shoplifters to reach a certain dollar amount before apprehending them, tracking them over multiple visits with facial recognition.A very similar complaint was filed against Target in Cook County Circuit Court in March. The extent of damages applicable in each case does not depend on the fate of BIPA amendments that are one step away from becoming law, because it does not apply retroactively. Baker Donelson Of Counsel David J. Oberly explained the prospects and implications of the bill to Biometric Update when it passed the State Senate in April.Oberly has just released the 2024 Edition of his Biometric Data Compliance & Best Practices book.
