This advancement turns traditionally brittle semiconductors like silicon and germanium into flexible fibers, with applications in flexible electronics through photoelectric fiber pn junctions.The flexible and stable "hair" sensors can be used independently or woven into fabric, transforming passive clothing into functional "smart" wear. These fibers have broad application prospects in future intelligent wearables, the metaverse, artificial intelligence, extreme environment sensors, brain-computer interfaces, and other fields.One-dimensional fibers, as a new form of inorganic semiconductor materials, offer advantages of fineness and softness. They provide possibilities for seamless integration of flexible electronic devices with daily clothing, creating non-intrusive links between technology and daily life.Rapid and large-scale production of high-quality semiconductor fibers has been a significant challenge. The research team, inspired by traditional optical fiber preparation and thermal drawing processes, extended the single material fiber thermal pulling method to the material preparation process. To enhance high-tech development within the EU and increase industry self-sufficiency, the EU's OBELIX project aims to design innovative technologies based on new concepts. Over the next four years, the European Innovation Council (EIC) will fund OBELIX through its Pathfinder program with approximately EUR 3.9 million. "We are collaborating with renowned institutions in France and Sweden as well as with Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) on the development of economical, environmentally friendly microelectronic technologies. This field will be central to our research in the coming years," stated Professor Mathias Klaui of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU).New Technologies for Sustainable Microelectronics-The OBELIX project, an acronym for "Orbital Engineering for Innovative Electronics," will be coordinated by the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) and run until 2028. JTA — A New Jersey district recalled its yearbooks after a photo of a Jewish student group was mysteriously swapped out for a Muslim student group.A suburban Chicago high school launched an investigation after its yearbook went to print with a quote from a student who said the October 7 Hamas atrocities made her “happy.”A Texas school tightened its policy on reviewing student publications after its yearbook published a page titled “Times of Palestine.”And Jewish groups in California and Minnesota have taken local districts to task for how their own yearbooks have described the events of the Israel-Hamas war.This year, US high school yearbooks — which typically are produced by students working with a staff adviser — were tasked with summarizing a tumultuous year, in which the long shadow of the Israel-Hamas war fell over political activism and caused some Jewish students to experience antisemitism in their schools. Some of the yearbooks, their critics say, embodied the year’s themes perhaps too well.“It made everybody assume from the beginning that this is antisemitism,” Brad Cohen, the Jewish mayor of East Brunswick, New Jersey, told the local news this week after the high school yearbook was distributed with a photo of the “Jewish Student Association” replaced with one of a Muslim student group. Blumenthal explained that it was a shekel piece from 68 CE, the third year of the Jewish Revolt against Rome, inscribed with the words “Jerusalem the Holy” on one side and “Shekel of Israel” on the other.“It’s material culture. You put it in someone’s hand and they feel the connection,” Blumenthal said, before nonchalantly slipping the 2,000-year-old shekel back into his satchel.This connection, provided by a physical object attesting to the ancient Jewish presence in Israel, has been a central theme of Blumenthal’s philanthropic efforts.Often working in concert with Israeli photographer and imaging technology expert Ardon Bar-Hama, Blumenthal, through what he called a series of “serendipitous” encounters over the last 20 years, ended up funding the groundbreaking high-resolution digitization of the Dead Sea Scrolls and also of the Aleppo Codex, one of the oldest surviving Torah scrolls, dating from the early 10th century CE, among other projects.He has also worked closely with The City of David, financing a series of animated films about the history of Jerusalem, and is currently partnering with the Central Zionist Archives to digitize the original diaries of Theodor Herzl. Blumenthal: Archaeologists and professors, they go very deep. Professors tell me that to get a PhD today, you have to drill down to one object and write a thesis about it. But it’s not a broad view. All that we’ve done is collect the work of these prominent, important people, all the things that they have found.Is this project in direct response to October 7?No, it was happening before. But October 7 made it suddenly more relevant.We in the United States do not feel your pain [in Israel]. We are empathetic, but every Israeli knows someone who was affected. What’s happening in the US is that we have a new pain of antisemitism. It’s always been there, below the surface. Look, I was called “Christ killer” when I was a kid. We were the only Jewish family in my neighborhood of Parma, Ohio. And I always felt there was antisemitism. But now… what’s happening on campus?I live in New York, near Columbia. I live in Trump Tower. There were marches outside. I took my tennis racket and I started yelling “rapist” at these people. I did it three times, but the police shooed me away.We, the Jewish community in the United States, are just galvanizing. When such a tragedy happens… both in Israel and on campus, no one was sitting there prepared for this. We have to galvanize. I believe we can do this through archaeology and history.We are talking about biblical archaeology, about proving the historicity of the Bible. Many people have their own ideas about the truth of the Bible, one way or another. It’s historical, but it’s also mythology, it’s also legends. I hope it’s an issue of facts, not ideas. With ideas, you have an opinion and I have an opinion. When you can provide a fact that goes against an opinion, then you can assert something. I believe we are in a position to assert our relationship with the land, where we are obviously indigenous. I am not going to accept the BS from the Palestinians saying otherwise. There is a big story, in the United States, that they are the indigenous people.But this site documents our presence. Let’s say, Ahab [one of the kings of ancient Israel]. A lot of people in the United States know the name Ahab. There is proof of Ahab! Who is defining it? The Assyrians. [King] Shalmaneser tells us that Ahab came up against him with 10,000 soldiers and 2,000 chariots.In the Tel Dan stele, we are defined by Aram, which is Syria. It was found over 30 years ago. It very specifically says, “I killed the king of the House of David.”Our story is defined by our adversaries.These references place biblical-period Jews there, in historical context.Exactly. They are documenting our presence in the land.You had shown me earlier something you had compiled from the site and sent to a Chabad group at Oberlin College, a packet of short archaeological and historical proofs. You said they had used this in an attempt to counter the colonization narrative going around among students there.Yes. And the Arab students there were dumbfounded when they heard the actual facts and saw the proof of it.It’s all about education. How can we get the word out? How can you take this material and use it more frequently, in bite sizes?A lot of the dialogue these days is also around more modern times, contemporary Zionism, and the creation of the State of Israel vis-à-vis the Palestinians.Everybody is amazed when I show them a newspaper from 1948: The State of Israel is declared, the Arabs attack… people say, “I’ve never seen that before.”[For another project] I am aggregating newspaper articles about the 1948 war, as well as memoirs of the leaders of the Arab Liberation Army. What I am focused on now, is the fact that during the war the Arabs tried to starve to death 100,000 Jews in Jerusalem by preventing food convoys from getting through.This is an enormous story, very well documented.It seems so many people, now more than ever, see Israel as “the bad guy.”The problem is that Israel doesn’t know how to tell its story.Why do you think that is?There is just a fundamental Israeli arrogance. “Damn the world, we know how to do everything.” But they don’t know how to speak to the world. You know, it used to be that a lot of Israeli businesses were developed but then had to be sold to American companies because they didn’t know how to market themselves in the US.Also, it’s because people don’t like Jews, let’s be honest. People don’t trust Jews. They [the Israelis] don’t understand this.What are your next steps?I felt despondent after October 7, but now I feel empowered… I believe that something has changed, but it takes a while to turn the ship.

Roughly 60% of people from 34 countries around the world hold a negative view of United States President Joe Biden’s handling of the war in Gaza, a Pew Research Center poll released Tuesday found.In Israel, a similar number — some 53% of Jews and 86% of Arabs — also said they disapproved of how Biden was dealing with the conflict.Some 60% of Israelis who placed themselves on the political right or center said they have confidence in Biden, as opposed to about half of Israelis who placed themselves on the left. Jews had more confidence in Biden than Arabs did, by 66% to 21%, and Arab Israeli opinion of the US was found to be at an all-time low.Pew noted that it was unable to survey the Gaza Strip and the West Bank due to security concerns.Overall, Biden’s handling of the war received the lowest approval rating of his five surveyed international policies, including his conduct toward China, the Russia-Ukraine war, global economic problems, and climate change. Bulgaria's sole nuclear power plant began to use atomic fuel produced by US group Westinghouse in one of its reactors Monday, in the latest effort to reduce its dependence on Russian energy.The state-owned Kozloduy plant on the Danube river supplies more than a third of the country's electricity and has so far relied on Russian fuel for its two operational Soviet-built 1,000-megawatt reactors.The oldest reactor -- unit 5 which dates from 1987 -- was connected to the national electricity grid on Monday morning after "43 fuel assemblies, produced by Westinghouse, were loaded into the reactor," the plant said in a statement.The gradual transition process towards the new fuel type is expected to take four years, it added.In the wake of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Kozloduy signed nuclear fuel supply agreements with Westinghouse and Framatome, a subsidiary of French energy giant EDF, to replace shipments from Russia.Before the war, EU and NATO member Bulgaria almost entirely depended on Russian energy supplies, but has since diversified.The plant's second reactor is due to be supplied with Framatome's fuel.In addition, two US-built nuclear reactors are to be built at Kozloduy by the 2030s.The Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary have also signed nuclear fuel supply agreements with Westinghouse and Framatome.

The mother of Andrey Kozlov, one of the four hostages rescued from Gaza by Israeli commandos last weekend, has described some of her son’s harrowing experiences during his eight months of captivity, as well as the surge of emotions that she and her family have experienced since officials rang her to say that he was safe.Evgeniia Kozlova, who held a series of interviews with Israeli and international media outlets that were published on Wednesday, said she had initially feared the news she was receiving was that something had happened to her son.“They said we have some news so please sit down — so I threw away my phone because I didn’t want to hear any bad news,” she told The Telegraph. “I started to cry, ‘No, no, no!’ And then they shouted from the phone, ‘We have good news, please answer!’”“For a few minutes I probably didn’t know how to react. But then I started laughing. And I’ve been laughing all the time ever since. Your mom doesn’t know about you at all — and doesn’t want to know.”The terrorists had also persuaded him and the other hostages that their girlfriends were dating other men, Andrey Kozlov’s mother told British outlet The Telegraph.“He said he was brainwashed… they told them that nobody wants them, that nobody is fighting for them,” she said. “They said that the Israel Defense Forces wants to kill them and that this will be the solution for the war. So, at the moment when the IDF came, Andrey thought that they came to kill them.“It took him a while to understand that the army came to bring them back to Israel. It was only after a soldier said to them that they love them and they will be fine, that they will be safe. It was only after these words he believed,” she said, adding that he then viewed the soldiers as “superheroes.”Father Mikhail told Kan that Andrey had described one guard as being particularly cruel and mentally disturbed, abusing him one day and the next saying, “I love you.”“This was psychological terror that was intended to cause the hostages to feel the most unease” and to “break them mentally,” Mikhail said.Evgeniia, also via the interpreter, told Kan that for the first two months, Andrey had been tied up. At first, his hands were bound behind his back. Andrey, she said, was able to joke to her about what a “gift” it was when they eventually bound his arms in front of him instead.‘I didn’t give up on him’Asked whether they support military pressure to free the hostages or a deal with Hamas, Master responded on behalf of the family, saying they “believe there needs to be a hostage deal that will bring all of the captives home.”Appealing to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the government, she urged that “they take the right decisions, and fast. It very much hurts Andrey to think that the hostages [in Gaza] are going through each day and perhaps thinking that is their last day. ”Master told Channel 12 news that the couple had started dating only shortly before Andrey was kidnapped.She reported that Andrey was “in a very, very delicate, very fragile state” as he digests what has happened.They had only been dating for three months before October 7, but over the following eight months, Master was a vocal campaigner for his release, including giving media interviews.“I didn’t give up on him, and I had faith every day that he was alive and that he would come back alive,” she said.Andrey kept a daily journal, each day writing “another day, another day,” and “promised himself that he would come back alive,” she said. The document was left behind in Gaza.His Russian citizenship did not impress his captors, Master said. Rather, they would ask him why he came to live in a country that is “an occupation.”Master said that being away from his family was what Andrey found hardest. His captors forced him to draw a picture of his mother “and he didn’t want to. That was very hard for him, he didn’t want to draw her.”His mother, she explained, “is his weak point. Each time he thought of her [while in captivity] he simply broke to pieces” because of the “nightmare” he was causing his parents.“He blames himself for being kidnapped,” she said. “He came back a different person. He just came back a fragile and different person.”While Hamas has denied mistreating the hostages, the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday cataloged the repeated physical and psychological abuse the hostages suffered during the eight months in Gaza, citing the abductees’ relatives as well as Israeli security and medical officials.According to the Journal, Jan, Ziv and Kozlov were held in a single dark room for six months and had no contact with the outside world except for their interactions with their captors.Punishments for failure to comply with their captors’ strict orders included being locked in the bathroom and being buried under blankets in the intense heat, the Journal said. A Berlin court on Tuesday rejected an urgent request by a number of Palestinian residents of Gaza to stop the government from approving permits for the export of German weapons to Israel on grounds that they might be used in violation of humanitarian law.The Palestinians were supported by several organizations including the European Legal Support Center (ELSC), Law for Palestine and the Palestine Institute for Public Diplomacy, who allege that there are reasons to believe such violations are happening in Gaza.Israel declared war after Hamas’s October 7 massacre, which saw some 3,000 terrorists murder some 1,200 people and seize 251 hostages, mostly civilians, many amid acts of brutality and sexual assault.Vowing to eliminate Hamas, Israel launched a wide-scale campaign in Gaza aimed at destroying the terror group’s military and governance capabilities and returning the hostages. The mission was planned weeks in advance, during which intelligence on the hostages’ locations was obtained and studied.The Yamam unit entered the two buildings simultaneously, and while Argamani was extracted smoothly, the rescue of the three men resulted in a major gun battle, where Yamam Chief Inspector Arnon Zmora was fatally wounded.Further complicating matters, the extraction vehicle for the three male hostages came under fire, causing it to break down and requiring a larger rescue force to extract the team.An IDF captain of a UAV squadron mission, who was involved in the operation and interviewed anonymously by Channel 12 news, said “many” Hamas combatants began converging on the scene of the operation after the hostages were extracted from the buildings.These gunmen began firing at the forces, the officer said, adding, “We rained down fire at a relatively fast rate in order to ensure that no one got close to the [extraction] vehicle and that there was enough time for the rescue force to get there and rescue the [extraction] force.”The officer said that the initial rescue team became stuck and that operational guidelines called for them to fortify themselves in place. The UAV squadron was supposed to “isolate [the team] from all threats and wait for the larger rescue force to arrive.”Video footage taken from the scene showed large explosions and smoke clouds billowing over the neighborhood. One eyewitness, who was interviewed by an Arabic outlet and then broadcasted by Kan News, said “there was fire at a crazy rate; airplanes began attacking from the sky from all fronts.”Proportionality and precaution-In light of the circumstances of the operation and the deadly consequences it wrought, can the IDF be said to have complied with the laws of armed conflict?Several legal scholars and human rights experts have raised concerns over the legality of the mission.Kenneth Roth, the former director of Human Right’s Watch and longtime, ardent critic of Israel, said that since the operation was deliberately conducted during the day, it increased the anticipated harm to civilians.“The problem with operating during the day is civilians are all about, and some of the bombs clearly fell either on or adjacent to a market in Nuseirat which was filled with people,” he told Al Jazeera.“In those circumstances you predictably will get larger numbers of civilian casualties then if it would have been a nighttime operation. That is inconsistent with the duty to take all feasible precautions to spare civilian harm.”Customary International Humanitarian Law as set out by the International Committee of the Red Cross stipulates that “all feasible precautions” must be taken to avoid or minimize civilian casualties when conducting military operations.Roth, however, noted that Hamas opened fire on the rescue forces and it was not known how many of the Palestinian casualties were civilians and combatants.On Tuesday, a spokesperson for the UN human rights office also called into question the legality of the operation on the basis of the same principles mentioned by Roth.“The manner in which the raid was conducted in such a densely populated area seriously calls into question whether the principles of distinction, proportionality and precaution — as set out under the laws of war — were respected by the Israeli forces,” said Jeremy Laurence, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.“All these actions, by both parties, may amount to war crimes,” he added.The ‘military advantage’ of rescuing the hostages-Dr. Tammy Caner, a researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies at Tel Aviv University, said that the key principle at play in evaluating the legality of military operations is that of proportionality.Additional Protocol I of the Geneva Convention states that an attack which may be expected to cause civilian casualties and damage “which would be excessive in relation to the concrete and direct military advantage anticipated” is illegal.In other words, if a military commander anticipates that the number of civilian casualties or injuries from an operation targeting a lawful military target would be disproportionate to the military advantage to be gained from the attack, that attack would be illegal.But the equation of what might be considered “excessive” civilian casualties can vary, depending on the value of the target.“Rescuing the hostages did not just constitute a significant ‘military advantage’ but [the operation] achieved one of the war’s overarching goals — the release of the four hostages,” argued Caner.“So, while there may have been significant collateral damage to civilians, it was not considered excessive under these circumstances.”She also said that the assessment of an attack’s legality does not depend on an assessment of the actual civilian harm that occurred after the attack, but rather on “harm that is reasonably foreseeable — that is, expected to result from the attack in the ordinary course of events.”Caner noted that the hostages were placed by Hamas in civilian apartment buildings amid a densely populated civilian neighborhood, and that the IDF extraction forces came under heavy fire, reportedly including from heavy machine guns and rocket propelled grenades.Emanuel Gross, an emeritus professor from Haifa University’s Faculty of Law and an expert on international law relating to combatting terrorism, argued that Israel had a clear legal obligation toward the hostages, as its citizens, to do everything possible to rescue them ”either by negotiation or by force.”Once the operation was underway, Israel had a right to defend both the rescue force and the hostages from the oncoming assault by the Hamas combatants.
“If they use force against you it is clear you have to react to their fire to protect the hostages and the soldiers extracting them, even if you will hit many civilians in so doing. You can’t escape these consequences,” said Gross.Yuval Kaplinsky, a former head of the State Attorney’s Office’s International Law Department, said that since the hostages were Israeli civilians who were unlawfully abducted from the sovereign territory of their country by an illegal terrorist organization, there might be greater leeway under the laws of armed conflict for civilian casualties during an operation to rescue them.“The situation of a hostage is different from that of a regular civilian. You’re trying to stop a very dramatic war crime against civilians [when conducting a rescue operation],” said Kaplinsky.“Because the operation was to save the civilian hostages, you could say that there is more room for maneuver than when just attacking [an ordinary] military target, in terms of proportionality.”Kaplinsky added that there had never been a case brought to any international court or legal tribunal prosecuting a hostage rescue mission, and that these kind of circumstances were unprecedented and therefore difficult to evaluate.In a similar vein, Gross opined that the laws of armed conflict, largely drawn up in the first half of the twentieth century, and even earlier, were not formulated considering the sort of war Israel is currently facing.“The kind of war we are conducting is not the classic war that international humanitarian law was created to address,” said Gross.“International law was not designed to address the manner in which Hamas conducts war, or to provide answers to these wars.“Such laws were created for wars between two nations, not a nation against a terror group. The international community should try to adopt different and new laws to respond correctly to the new phenomenon that we are facing now, which is states facing non-state actors like Hamas and Islamic Jihad.”

All four were killed.Abdullah was also considered by the IDF to be a “source of knowledge” with many years of experience in the terror group. Abdullah was involved in the 2005 attempted kidnapping in Ghajar, and in the 2006 Lebanon war, was the commander of the Bint Jbeil area, according to the military.The IDF said it was prepared for the terror group’s response to the strike, and was bracing for additional attacks throughout the day.Following the rocket barrages, the IDF said it struck four sites belonging to Hezbollah in southern Lebanon’s Yater, used to carry out the attack. Rocket launchers in Hanine and Yaroun, used in the barrages, were also hit, the military said.Since the day after Hamas’s October 7 attack, Hezbollah-led forces have attacked Israeli communities and military posts along the border on a near-daily basis, with the group saying it is doing so to support Gaza amid the war there.So far, the skirmishes on the border have resulted in 10 civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of 15 IDF soldiers and reservists. There have also been several attacks from Syria, without any injuries.Hezbollah has named 342 members who have been killed by Israel during the ongoing skirmishes, mostly in Lebanon but some also in Syria. An off-duty Israeli soldier opened fire at a suspect in Jerusalem’s Old City on Wednesday, police said. The suspect was seriously injured by the gunfire, and another three people were lightly hurt in the incident.Media reports indicated the man was a Palestinian.According to Hebrew media, the man who was shot was rushed to Shaare Zedek Medical Center. The incident was under investigation.Police said they were looking into reports that the soldier, along with other off-duty troops, were involved in a violent incident with the suspect before shots were fired. The altercation involved parties throwing objects at each other.Police added that they were investigating a claim made by the off-duty soldiers that the suspect attempted to snatch one of their weapons.“We saw two injured people who were conscious and suffering from penetrating injuries. GENEVA — Both Israel and Hamas committed war crimes in the early stages of the Gaza war, a UN inquiry alleged on Wednesday, saying Israel’s actions also constituted crimes against humanity because of the immense civilian losses, and that they included acts of “extermination.”The findings were from two parallel reports by “independent experts,” one focusing on the Oct. 7 Hamas assault on Israel and another on Israel’s military response, published by the UN Commission of Inquiry (COI). The commission has an unusually broad and open-ended mandate to collect evidence and identify perpetrators of alleged international crimes committed in Israel and the Palestinian territories.Regarding Israel’s actions, the commission alleged “a widespread or systematic attack directed against the civilian population in Gaza.”“The commission found that the crimes against humanity of extermination; murder; gender persecution targeting Palestinian men and boys; forcible transfer; and torture and inhuman and cruel treatment were committed,” it added.Israel bitterly rejected the allegations and accused the commission of systematic bias.Sexual violence-The reports also alleged that both Israeli forces and Palestinian terrorists engaged in sexual and gender-based violence during the first months of the Israel-Hamas war.The alleged sexual violence carried out by Israeli forces apparently referred to incidents where dozens of terror suspects detained in Gaza were publicly stripped. The slogans of the Iranian nation are reiterated and heard at the American universities, and reverberating in their message is their origin in Iran's rich culture and powerful honor."[2] Kayhan: Khamenei's Letters To Young People In The West Fanned The Flames Of The Campus Protests-In a May 6, 2024 article, Kayhan said that the two open letters to young people in the West that Iranian Supreme Leader Khamenei posted on his website and his social media accounts in 2015 had sown the seeds of the resistance on university campuses and had motivated students to protest against the Western governments, out of their understanding of how these governments are treating "the oppressed [i.e. the Muslims]" and out of solidarity with the victims of the Israeli-Western "oppression" in Gaza. The article said that in the protests, "every student from Harvard, MIT, Boston, Columbia, Emerson, Texas, and so forth has become an Iranian student."It should be noted that these 2015 letters by Khamenei addressed to young Westerners came against the backdrop of a series of Islamic terror attacks in France and elsewhere in the world.
