WARN THE PEOPLE-WW3
EZEKIEL 33:1-6
1 Again the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
2
Son of man, speak to the children of thy people, and say unto them,
When I bring the sword upon a land, if the people of the land take a man
of their coasts, and set him for their watchman:
3 If when he seeth the sword come upon the land, he blow the trumpet, and warn the people;
4
Then whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet, and taketh not
warning; if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be upon
his own head.
5 He heard the sound of the trumpet, and took not
warning; his blood shall be upon him. But he that taketh warning shall
deliver his soul.
6 But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow
not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and
take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but
his blood will I require at the watchman’s hand.

And at the time of the end shall the king of the south( EGYPT) push at

HORDES OF EZEK 38+39) shall come against him like a whirlwind, with
chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter

41 He shall
enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be
overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab,
and the chief of the children of Ammon.(JORDAN)
42 He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape.

But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and

10
Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the
realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor
planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.
EZEKIEL 31:10-17
10
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast lifted up thyself
in height, and he hath shot up his top among the thick boughs, and his
heart is lifted up in his height;
11 I have therefore delivered him
into the hand of the mighty one of the heathen; he shall surely deal
with him: I have driven him out for his wickedness.
12 And
strangers, the terrible of the nations, have cut him off, and have left
him: upon the mountains and in all the valleys his branches are fallen,
and his boughs are broken by all the rivers of the land; and all the
people of the earth are gone down from his shadow, and have left him.
13 Upon his ruin shall all the fowls of the heaven remain, and all the beasts of the field shall be upon his branches:
14To
the end that none of all the trees by the waters exalt themselves for
their height, neither shoot up their top among the thick boughs, neither
their trees stand up in their height, all that drink water: for they
are all delivered unto death, to the nether parts of the earth, in the
midst of the children of men, with them that go down to the pit.(HELL).
15Thus
saith the Lord GOD; In the day when he went down to the grave I caused a
mourning: I covered the deep for him, and I restrained the floods
thereof, and the great waters were stayed: and I caused Lebanon to mourn
for him, and all the trees of the field fainted for him.
16 I made
the nations to shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him down to
hell with them that descend into the pit: and all the trees of Eden, the
choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, shall be comforted in
the nether parts of the earth.
17They also went down into hell with
him unto [them that be] slain with the sword; and [they that were] his
arm, [that] dwelt under his shadow in the midst of the heathen.
18To
whom art thou thus like in glory and in greatness among the trees of
Eden? yet shalt thou be brought down with the trees of Eden unto the
nether parts of the earth: thou shalt lie in the midst of the
uncircumcised with [them that be] slain by the sword. This [is] Pharaoh
and all his multitude, saith the Lord GOD.
EZEKIEL 32:17-32
17
It came to pass also in the twelfth year, in the fifteenth [day] of the
month, [that] the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
18 Son of
man, wail for the multitude of Egypt, and cast them down, [even] her,
and the daughters of the famous nations, unto the nether parts of the
earth, with them that go down into the pit.
19 Whom dost thou pass in beauty? go down, and be thou laid with the uncircumcised.
20
They shall fall in the midst of [them that are] slain by the sword: she
is delivered to the sword: draw her and all her multitudes.
21 The
strong among the mighty shall speak to him out of the midst of hell with
them that help him: they are gone down, they lie uncircumcised, slain
by the sword.
22 Asshur [is] there and all her company: his graves [are] about him: all of them slain, fallen by the sword:
23
Whose graves are set in the sides of the pit, and her company is round
about her grave: all of them slain, fallen by the sword, which caused
terror in the land of the living.
24 There [is] Elam (IRAN) and all
her multitude round about her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the
sword, which are gone down uncircumcised into the nether parts of the
earth, which caused their terror in the land of the living; yet have
they borne their shame with them that go down to the pit.
25 They
have set her a bed in the midst of the slain with all her multitude: her
graves [are] round about him: all of them uncircumcised, slain by the
sword: though their terror was caused in the land of the living, yet
have they borne their shame with them that go down to the pit: he is put
in the midst of [them that be] slain.
26 There [is] Meshech,
Tubal,(RUSSIA) (GERMANY, TURKEY) and all her multitude: her graves [are]
round about him: all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword, though
they caused their terror in the land of the living.
27And they shall
not lie with the mighty [that are] fallen of the uncircumcised, which
are gone down to hell with their weapons of war: and they have laid
their swords under their heads, but their iniquities shall be upon their
bones, though [they were] the terror of the mighty in the land of the
living.
28 Yea, thou shalt be broken in the midst of the uncircumcised, and shalt lie with [them that are] slain with the sword.
29
There [is] Edom,(JORDAN) her kings, and all her princes, which with
their might are laid by [them that were] slain by the sword: they shall
lie with the uncircumcised, and with them that go down to the pit.
30
There [be] the princes of the north, all of them, and all the
Zidonians, which are gone down with the slain; with their terror they
are ashamed of their might; and they lie uncircumcised with [them that
be] slain by the sword, and bear their shame with them that go down to
the pit.
31 Pharaoh shall see them, and shall be comforted over all
his multitude, [even] Pharaoh and all his army slain by the sword, saith
the Lord GOD.
32 For I have caused my terror in the land of the
living: and he shall be laid in the midst of the uncircumcised with
[them that are] slain with the sword, [even] Pharaoh and all his
multitude, saith the Lord GOD.

all of them handling swords:
5 Persia,(IRAN,IRAQ) Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet:

7 Be thou prepared, and

thee, and be thou a guard unto them.
8 After many days thou shalt be
visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is
brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against
the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is
brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of
them.
9 Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a
cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with
thee.(RUSSIA-EGYPT AND MUSLIMS)
10 Thus saith the Lord GOD; It shall
also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy
mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought:
11 And thou shalt
say,(RUSSIA-ARAB-MUSLIMS) I will go up to the land of unwalled

all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates,

15 And
thou shalt come from thy place out of the north parts, thou, and many
people with thee, all of them riding upon horses, a great company, and a
mighty army:
16 And thou shalt come up against my people of Israel,
as a cloud to cover the land; it shall be in the latter days, and I
will bring thee against my land, that the heathen may know me, when I
shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes.
EZEKIEL 39:11-22

And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog

And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD; Speak unto every

come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do
sacrifice for you, even a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel,
that ye may eat flesh, and drink blood.(OF THE RUSSIAN/ARAB/MUSLIM
ARMIES)
18 Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood
of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of
bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan.
19 And ye shall eat fat till ye be full, and drink blood till ye be drunken, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you.
20 Thus ye shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord GOD.
21
And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall
see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon
them.
22 So the house of Israel shall know that I am the LORD their God from that day and forward.

angel raise the sickle and come down on all the Middle East countries. I
saw Iran, Persia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, all of Georgia - Iraq, Syria,
Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, all of Asia Minor - full of blood. I saw blood
all over these countries. And I saw fire; Nuclear weapons used in many
of those countries. Smoke rising from everywhere. Sudden destruction –
men destroying one another. I heard these words:"Israel, Oh Israel, the
great judgment has come." The angel said, "The chosen, the church, the
remnant, shall be purified. The Spirit of God shall prepare the children
of God."I saw fires rising to heaven. The angel said: "This is the final
judgment. My church shall be purified, protected and ready for the
final day. Men will die from thirst. Water shall be scarce all over the
Middle East. Rivers shall dry up, and men will fight for water in those
countries."The angel showed me that the United Nations shall be broken
in pieces because of the crisis in the Middle East. There shall be no
more United Nations. The angel with the sickle shall reap the harvest.

Lebanese network over alleged oil, LPG smuggling for Hezbollah-Treasury
Department targets three individuals, five companies and a number of
tankers it says are involved in fundraising for terror group-By Reuters
and ToI Staff 11 September 2024, 11:23 pm
WASHINGTON — US
President Joe Biden’s administration issued sanctions Wednesday on a
Lebanese network it accused of smuggling oil and liquefied petroleum gas
(LPG) to help fund the Hezbollah terror group. The sanctions targeted
three people, five companies and two vessels which the US Treasury
Department said were overseen by a senior leader of Hezbollah’s finance
team and used profits from illicit LPG shipments to Syria to aid
generate revenue for the group.Acting Under Secretary of the Treasury
for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Bradley Smith, in a statement,
said Hezbollah “continues to launch rockets into Israel and fuel
regional instability, choosing to prioritize funding violence over
taking care of the people it claims to care about, including the tens of
thousands displaced in southern Lebanon.”The Treasury statement named
the individuals as Hezbollah official Muhammad Ibrahim Habib al-Sayyid
and Lebanese businessmen Ali Nayef Zgheib and Boutros Georges Obeid, who
have all “materially assisted, sponsored, or provided financial,
material, or technological support for, or goods or services to or in
support of, Hezbollah.”Five companies linked to the three men were also
slapped with US sanctions, as were a number of oil tankers involved in
delivering gas to Baniyas port in Syria.Matthew Miller, the spokesman
for the US State Department, said Wednesday’s sanctions were part of
overall efforts to disrupt Hezbollah’s “illicit revenue generation and
isolate the terrorist group’s financial network,” adding that the US
“will not waver” in pursuing the terror group.Since the start of
Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza and ongoing fighting against
Hezbollah in the north, the US has sanctioned a large number of entities
involved in funding and financing Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis and
other groups.Since October 8, Hezbollah-led forces have attacked Israeli
communities and military posts along the border on a near-daily basis,
with the group saying it is doing so to support Gaza amid the war
there. So far, the skirmishes have resulted in 26 civilian deaths on the
Israeli side, as well as the deaths of 20 IDF soldiers and reservists.
There have also been several attacks from Syria, without any
injuries.Hezbollah has named 436 members who have been killed by Israel
during the ongoing skirmishes, mostly in Lebanon but some also in Syria.
Another 78 operatives from other terror groups, a Lebanese soldier, and
more than 130 civilians have also been reported killed.

Hamas command center in Nuseirat school-turned-shelter, announces
earlier killings of Hamas operatives who participated in Oct. 7, guarded
hostage Noa Marciano-By Emanuel Fabian-11 September 2024, 10:32 pm
Defense
Minister Yoav Gallant on Wednesday revealed a document he said was
written by the former commander of Hamas’s Khan Younis Brigade in
southern Gaza, Rafa’a Salameh, and addressed to Hamas leader Yahya
Sinwar and his brother Muhammad, in which the commander described the
“difficult situation” in which the terror group had found
itself.Salameh, a mastermind of the terror group’s October 7 massacre,
was killed in an Israeli airstrike in southern Gaza in July that also
killed senior Hamas commander Muhammad Deif.In the letter, he wrote:
“Please consider the following: We maintain the remaining weapons and
equipment, as we have lost 90-95 percent of our rocket capabilities; and
we have lost some 60% of our personal weapons; we have lost at least
65-70% of our anti-tank launchers and rockets,” according to excerpts
provided and translated by the Defense Ministry.“Most importantly,” he
continued, “we have lost at least 50% of our fighters between those who
are martyred and wounded, and now we are left with 25%. The last 25% of
our people have reached a situation where the people do not tolerate
them anymore, broken on a mental or physical level.”Gallant said the
document showed “a real hardship that affects Hamas and affects the most
senior commanders.”Salameh “cries out for the help of the Sinwar
brothers, but of course they cannot save him,” Gallant said.“Why?
Because we are continuing the effort that started in October and
continues step by step… and reaches all senior Hamas officials. He wrote
this to the Sinwar brothers, we will get to them as well,” the defense
minister continued.Yahya Sinwar is the leader of Hamas in Gaza, and is
considered a mastermind of the group’s October 7, 2023 attack, when
thousands of terrorists invaded southern Israel from the Gaza Strip,
killing some 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, starting the ongoing
war.Sinwar was last month appointed as the head of the terror group
following the July 31 assassination of previous leader Ismail Haniyeh.
His brother Muhammad is a senior commander in Hamas’s military
wing.Gallant’s presentation of the document came on the same day as two
Israeli soldiers were killed and several others wounded in a helicopter
crash attempting to extract a third, seriously wounded soldier from the
battlefield. The crash was not a result of enemy fire.Gallant also
published a video on social media Wednesday from the same facility,
showing a photo of Muhammad Sinwar’s children posing in front of a
depiction of the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center in
the United States. The photo was discovered recently in a tunnel
underneath Khan Younis, Gallant said in the video, which was posted on
the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.A picture is worth a thousand
words. This picture was found in a tunnel where the Sinwar brothers were

גלנט – Yoav Gallant (@yoavgallant) September 11, 2024-Meanwhile, an
Israeli airstrike Wednesday in central Gaza struck a group of Hamas
operatives at a command room embedded within a former school.According
to the military, Hamas was using the Al-Jaouni School in Nuseirat to
plan and carry out attacks against troops and Israel. The school has
been serving as a shelter for displaced Gazans.Hospital officials
reported 14 people killed, including two children, in the strike. The IDF
said it carried out “many steps,” including using precision munitions,
aerial surveillance and other intelligence, to limit civilian casualties
in the strike.“The Hamas terror organization systematically violates
international law, brutally exploiting civilian institutions and the
population as a human shield for terror activity,” the military said.In
recent months, dozens of airstrikes have been carried out against Hamas
sites embedded within schools and other sites used as shelters for
civilians, according to the IDF.The IDF also announced on Wednesday that
recent airstrikes in Gaza had killed two Hamas terrorists who
participated in the October 7 onslaught, one of whom was involved in
guarding Cpl. Noa Marciano, an abducted soldier who was killed by Hamas
at Shifa Hospital and whose body was recovered in November.A separate
drone strike recently killed Ayman Khaled Ahmed Abu al-Yahni, who the
IDF said was a member of Hamas’s elite Nukhba force and was involved in
attacking the Erez Crossing during the October 7 onslaught, the military
announced.Rocket sirens sounded in Israeli communities along the Gaza
border on Wednesday, but the IDF later announced they were false
alarms. It is believed that 97 of the 251 hostages abducted by Hamas on
October 7 remain in Gaza, including the bodies of at least 33 confirmed
dead by the IDF.Hamas released 105 civilians during a weeklong truce in
late November, and four hostages were released before that. Eight
hostages have been rescued by troops alive, and the bodies of 37
hostages have also been recovered, including three mistakenly killed by
the military as they tried to escape their captors.Hamas is also holding
two Israeli civilians who entered the Strip in 2014 and 2015, as well
as the bodies of two IDF soldiers who were killed in 2014.The Hamas-run
Gaza health ministry says more than 40,000 people in the Strip have been
killed or are presumed dead in the fighting so far, though the toll
cannot be verified and does not differentiate between civilians and
fighters. Israel says it has killed some 17,000 combatants in battle and
another 1,000 terrorists inside Israel on October 7.Israel has said it
seeks to minimize civilian fatalities and stresses that Hamas uses
Gaza’s civilians as human shields, fighting from civilian areas
including homes, hospitals, schools, and mosques.Israel’s toll in the
ground offensive against Hamas in Gaza and in military operations along
the border with the Strip stands at 344.Agencies and Times of Israel

Visiting Jordan Valley,
Netanyahu vows to work with Amman to boost border fence-Days after
deadly shooting at Allenby border crossing, PM says ‘stronger barrier’
needed along boundary with Jordan, a project repeatedly promised and
scrapped over the years-By Lazar Berman-and ToI Staff 11 September 2024,
8:51 pm
During a visit on Wednesday to an IDF outpost
overlooking the Jordan Valley, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
stressed the joint effort with Amman to secure their shared border.“In
this multi-theater struggle,” he said. “We know that we need to secure
our eastern border with Jordan. This is a border of peace. We are
partnering with the Kingdom of Jordan to ensure that it remains
so.”Challenges are increasing, said Netanyahu, days after a terrorist
attack at the Allenby border crossing with Jordan left three Israelis
dead.“There is an attempt to smuggle both terrorists and weapons across
the Jordan into Judea and Samaria and into the cities of Israel,” he
said, using the West Bank’s biblical name. “We are working here in
cooperation with all parties to stop this.”Netanyahu said Israel will
work to “construct a stronger barrier” to fight smuggling.“We will do it
in coordination with the neighbors,” he promised. “It is important for
us to ensure that this border remains a border of peace — peace and
security.”Jordan has been a leading critic of Israel’s war in Gaza, and
more recently, of visits by government ministers to the Temple Mount. It
has recalled its ambassador but has continued close security
cooperation, including during the April 13-14 drone and missile attack
on Israel by Iran. There is an aging fence along the 309-kilometer
(192-mile) border that Jordan shares with Israel and the West Bank,
though military and police officials say it is sufficient to prevent
most gun-smuggling attempts. The idea of boosting the fence or building
some sort of border wall has been floated repeatedly by Netanyahu and
others for more than a decade, although many see any such major effort
as unlikely due to the sheer length of the border and the enormous
cost.Last month, Foreign Minister Israel Katz called for a security
fence to be built “quickly” along the Israel-Jordan border, accusing
Iran of attempting to establish an “eastern terror front” against Israel
by smuggling in weapons via Jordan.A 30-kilometer (18-mile) portion of
the border with Jordan, near the southernmost city of Eilat and the new
Ramon International Airport, has been upgraded in a similar fashion to
Israel’s border barriers with Egypt and the Gaza Strip.Israel shelled
out NIS 300 million ($88 million) for the small section of the border
near Eilat, meaning that a project to cover the whole Jordanian border
would likely cost billions of shekels. In September 2023, Netanyahu once
again floated the idea of building a fence along the entire length of
the border to “ensure that there will be no infiltration.”The prime
minister also ordered IDF and Defense Ministry officials to start
planning in 2012, touted the start of construction of a sensor-laden
fence on the southern border with Jordan in 2015, and announced in 2016
that he planned to “surround the entire State of Israel with a
fence.”For years, Netanyahu and other Israeli officials touted its NIS
3.5 billion ($1.1 billion) hi-tech state-of-the-art fence along the
border with Gaza, which was equipped with a wall of iron, sensors and
concrete, as providing ultimate security to citizens in the area.On the
morning of October 7, 2023, the wall was handily breached by thousands
of Hamas terrorists, who disabled its sensors with drones, knocked parts
of the barrier down with bulldozers, then drove right through the
gaping holes while others sailed right over in paragliders, ultimately
massacring around 1,200 people in Israel and taking 251 hostage in
Gaza.Emanuel Fabian contributed to this report.
100 rockets from
Lebanon batter north; IDF reservist injured by anti-tank missile-Member

An Israeli reservist soldier was wounded in
a Hezbollah anti-tank guided missile attack from Lebanon on Wednesday,
the Israel Defense Forces said.It came as barrages of around 100 rockets
from Lebanon pounded areas in the north of the country. The 39-year-old
reservist, a member of Kibbutz Dan’s local security team, was taken to
Rambam Hospital in Haifa after being hit by a missile in the
community. The medical center said he was conscious and suffering
shrapnel injuries. He was taken for surgery and was listed in serious
condition.Meanwhile, more than 60 rockets were launched from Lebanon at
northern Israel in the space of around an hour Wednesday afternoon. Then
in the early evening, another 40 were fired.A barrage of some 30
rockets was fired from Lebanon at the Western Galilee, impacting open
areas near the community of Abirim, the IDF said. Then, another barrage
of 30 rockets was fired from Lebanon at the Galilee Panhandle area,
impacting open areas near Kfar Szold.Residents of the upper and western
Galilee were ordered to remain close to bomb shelters during the
afternoon. There were no injuries in the rocket attacks, which
apparently hit open areas. In the second wave, the IDF said some 30
rockets were launched at the Arab al-Aramshe area, and another 10 were
fired at Matat. Many of the rockets struck open areas, although some
impacted Matat. There were no injuries in the attacks. The IDF said it
responded with artillery fire at a Hezbollah observation post and other
targets in southern Lebanon.Later, Israeli fighter jets struck Hezbollah
sites in southern Lebanon’s Khraibeh, as well as a rocket launcher in
Ayta ash-Shab, and buildings used by the terror group in Houla, Ayta
ash-Shab and Marwahin, the IDF said. The rockets and missile attack came
hours after the IDF confirmed carrying out a drone strike in southern
Lebanon’s Mays al-Jabal, targeting two Hezbollah operatives. One was
killed and the second was wounded in the strike.Separately, fighter jets
struck a Hezbollah rocket launcher in Marimin, which had been used in
previous attacks on Israel, the military said.Another primed rocket
launcher was struck in Rashaya al-Foukhar, the IDF added.Lebanese media
also reported two drone strikes in the area of Maroun al-Ras in southern
Lebanon. There was no immediate comment from the IDF.This week has seen
repeated rounds of fire between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah amid
escalating violence that has raised concerns it could boil over into a
full-scale war.Overnight Tuesday-Wednesday, Israeli jets hit 30 rocket
launchers in Lebanon, the military said. It came the day after Hezbollah
fired 45 rockets into northern Israel, though no injuries were
caused.Speaking to troops during a drill simulating a ground offensive
in Lebanon, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Tuesday that Israel was
shifting its focus to the northern front as it aims to soon achieve its
objectives in the Gaza Strip. The war in Gaza began when Palestinian
terror group Hamas led a devastating October 7 cross-border attack on
Israel that killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians. The thousands of
terrorists who burst into the country also abducted 251 people who were
taken as hostages to Gaza.Israel responded with a military offensive to
destroy Hamas in Gaza and free the hostages.Since October 8,
Hezbollah-led forces have attacked Israeli communities and military
posts along the border on a near-daily basis, with the group saying it
is doing so to support Gaza amid the war there. So far, the skirmishes
have resulted in 26 civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the
deaths of 20 IDF soldiers and reservists. There have also been several
attacks from Syria, without any injuries. Hezbollah has named 436
members who have been killed by Israel during the ongoing skirmishes,
mostly in Lebanon but some also in Syria. Another 78 operatives from
other terror groups, a Lebanese soldier and dozens of civilians have
also been killed.Tensions have been particularly high in recent weeks,
with Hezbollah vowing retaliation for Israel’s assassination of its top
military commander in Beirut in July. Israel said it foiled part of the
terror group’s response to the killing last month, when IDF fighter jets
struck thousands of Hezbollah rocket launcher barrels in southern
Lebanon, including some believed to be aimed at Mossad headquarters.
Iran’s
president says West letting Israel commit ‘massacres’ using US,
European arms-Visiting Iraq, Masoud Pezeshkian signs 14 MoUs to boost
ties between neighbors; in hint at Israel, Iraqi PM says his country’s
airspace won’t be used for attacks on Iran-By AP and ToI Staff 11
September 2024, 6:22 pm
BAGHDAD (AP) — Iranian President Masoud
Pezeshkian slammed the West on Wednesday, claiming that Israel is
“committing massacres” in the war against Hamas in Gaza and using
European and American weapons to do so.Pezeshkian, who spoke in Baghdad
at the start of his first visit abroad since taking office, is hoping to
cement Tehran’s ties with Baghdad as regional tensions increasingly
pull both majority Shiite countries into the widening Middle East
fray.Iran has been a staunch supporter of the Palestinian terror group
Hamas since it led a devastating October 7 cross-border attack on
southern Israel that killed over 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and
sparked the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip.Israel’s military response to
the attack is aimed at destroying Hamas, toppling its Gaza regime, and
freeing 251 people that terrorists abducted on October 7 and took as
hostages in Gaza. Of those, 97 are still captive, dozens of them
believed no longer alive.“The Israeli entity is committing massacres
against women, children, young men and the elderly. They bomb hospitals
and schools,” Pezeshkian said.“All these crimes are being committed by
using European and American ammunition and bombs,” he added, without
elaborating. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 40,000
people in the Strip have been killed or are presumed dead in the
fighting so far, though the toll cannot be verified and does not
differentiate between civilians and fighters. Israel says it has killed
some 17,000 combatants in battle and another 1,000 terrorists inside
Israel on October 7.Israel has said it seeks to minimize civilian
fatalities and stresses that Hamas uses Gaza’s civilians as human
shields, fighting from civilian areas including homes, hospitals,
schools and mosques.Ahead of Pezeshkian’s arrival, an explosion struck a
site near Baghdad International Airport used by the US military on
Tuesday night. There were no reported casualties and the circumstances
of the explosion were unclear. The US Embassy later described it as an
“attack” on the Baghdad Diplomatic Services Compound, an American
diplomatic facility, and that it was “assessing the damage” and the
cause of the explosion. It didn’t provide further details.Pezeshkian’s
visit is significant for both countries. For Iran, its relationship with
Iraq remains crucial for economic, political and religious reasons —
something that has especially been true since the US-led 2003 invasion
of Iraq toppled dictator Saddam Hussein, who launched a bloody,
years-long war against Iran in the 1980s.Baghdad, meanwhile, has been
trying to balance its relationship with Tehran, which backs powerful
Shiite militias in the country, as well as with the United States, which
maintains a force of 2,500 troops in Iraq that remain in battle with
remnants of the once-dominant extremist Islamic State group. The American
troops remain both a literal and rhetoric target for Iran, particularly
as Israel’s nearly year-old war on Hamas in Gaza grinds on.Iraq’s Prime
Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani told reporters during a joint news
conference with Pezeshkian that the two neighboring countries signed 14
memorandums of understanding Wednesday to boost relations. He also
pledged that Iraq’s airspace will not be used for attacks on the Islamic
Republic, an apparent reference to Israel.Pezeshkian, who was sworn in
as Iran’s new president in July, is also to visit Shiite shrines in the
Iraqi holy cities of Karbala and Najaf, a railroad project to link the
southern city of Basra to Iran and Irbil, the capital of Iraq’s
semiautonomous northern Kurdish region.Still, there have been tensions
between Iran and Iraq, particularly after Iranian missiles hit sites in
Iraq in attacks over the past six years, targeting Kurdish militias, a
base housing American forces and also what Tehran alleged were Israeli
sites in Iraq.Iran also fired missiles and flew drones over Iraq in its
unprecedented direct attack on Israel in April. That attack followed a
suspected Israeli strike on a building Iran said was part of its
diplomatic compound in Damascus, Syria, that killed two Iranian generals
and five officers, as well as a member of the Lebanese Shiite terror
group Hezbollah, an Iranian proxy. The Islamic Republic has also
threatened further retaliation against Israel over the July
assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, which could
include another missile barrage. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied
involvement in the killing.Iraq also needs the close ties to maintain
Baghdad’s supply of imported Iranian natural gas to meet its electricity
needs. A barter deal for Iraqi crude oil has seen the supply continue,
though US sanctions targeting Tehran over its rapidly advancing nuclear
program have put pressure on Baghdad.Meanwhile Tuesday, the United
States and Britain formally accused Iran of supplying short-range
ballistic missiles to Russia to use against Ukraine, announcing new
sanctions on both Moscow and Tehran. The continued presence of US troops
in Iraq remains a concern for Iran. Since the Israel-Hamas war broke
out, Iraqi militias allied with Iran have targeted US forces here,
leading to American airstrikes targeting the militias. Iraqi politicians
continue to debate the issue of whether to back having American troops
remain in the country.
Biden, Harris assail IDF over killing of
American in West Bank, demand accountability-US president appears to
reject family’s demand for independent probe, noting full access to
findings, while VP notes answers needed, backs call for military
reforms-By Agencies and ToI Staff 11 September 2024, 5:23 pm
US
President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris expressed outrage
Wednesday over the fatal shooting of an American protester by Israeli
troops in the West Bank last week, calling for full accountability and
demanding Jerusalem take steps to prevent future incidents.Dual
Turkish-American national Aysenur Eygi, 26, was shot dead Friday while
taking part in a march against Israeli settlement activity in the
northern West Bank. On Tuesday, the Israel Defense Forces said the
activist had in all probability been mistakenly hit by troops aiming at
another figure and expressed regret over the killing.“There must be full
accountability,” Biden said in a statement released early on Wednesday.
“And Israel must do more to ensure that incidents like this never
happen again.”The president said he was “outraged and deeply saddened”
by Eygi’s death, calling the shooting “totally unacceptable.”A separate
statement released hours later by Harris, the Democratic nominee for
president, sharpened the White House’s message, saying the killing
“raises legitimate questions about the conduct of IDF personnel in the
West Bank,” echoing a demand from Secretary of State Antony Blinken a
day earlier that the army reform its operating procedures.“The killing
of Aysenur Eygi is a horrific tragedy that never should have happened,”
Harris said. “No one should be killed for participating in a peaceful
protest.”Biden in his statement backed the initial Israeli finding,
describing the death as “the result of a tragic error resulting from an
unnecessary escalation,” and appeared to push back against demands from
Eygi’s family that the White House order an independent probe into the
killing rather than rely on Israel.“The US government has had full
access to Israel’s preliminary investigation, and expects continued
access as the investigation continues, so that we can have confidence in
the result,” he said in the statement. That position was largely echoed
by Harris, though she omitted any mention of Israel granting the US
access to the probe. She also skirted allegations of Palestinian
instigation during the confrontation with troops Friday.“We will
continue to press the government of Israel for answers,” she said.On
Tuesday, Biden told reporters he believed the killing had been
accidental. “It ricocheted off the ground, and she got hit by accident,”
he said. The statements from Biden and Harris were published hours after
a Palestinian driving a fuel tanker crashed his truck into a person
standing at a West Bank bus stop in an apparent ramming attack, and as
Israeli settlers allegedly set fire to a Palestinian olive grove,
underlining months of heightened violence amid fears of a wider
conflagration. Both the president and the vice president vowed in their
Wednesday comments to push policies holding Israelis and Palestinians
accountable for stoking violence and not facilitating peace.“The
violence in the West Bank has been going on for too long,” Biden said.
“Violent extremist Israeli settlers are uprooting Palestinians from
their homes. Palestinian terrorists are sending car bombs to kill
civilians.”Eygi was an activist with the International Solidarity
Movement, which describes itself as “a Palestinian-led movement
committed to resisting the Israeli occupation” with nonviolent tactics.
She was attending one of the group’s regular demonstrations at Beita
Junction, near Nablus in the northern West Bank, when clashes broke out
between troops and protesters, according to the Israeli military and an
Israeli activist who attended the march.“The incident occurred during a
violent gathering of dozens of Palestinian suspects, who burned tires
and threw stones at forces at Beita Junction,” the IDF said Tuesday,
though the activist group denied protesters engaged in any violent
activity.Jonathan Pollak, an Israeli participating in Friday’s protest,
said dozens of Palestinians and international activists had hurled rocks
at troops following a communal prayer on a hillside outside Beita,
drawing tear gas and live ammunition from the soldiers. He said Eygi was
shot by troops posted on a nearby roof about a half hour after the
clashes had died down.Speaking in London on Tuesday, Blinken assailed
the killing as “unprovoked and unjustified.” He called for “fundamental
changes” to how the IDF operates in the West Bank, including its rules
of engagement, accusing the military of turning a blind eye to settler
violence against Palestinians while using excessive force against
protesters.“It’s not acceptable,” said Blinken. “It has to change. And
we will be making that clear to the seniormost members of the Israeli
government.”There was no immediate comment from Israeli officials other
than the army. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was in the West Bank’s
Jordan Valley on Wednesday, visiting hours after the IDF said it had
carried out an airstrike on a terror cell in the area.Three Israeli men
were killed in a terrorist shooting attack at the Allenby Bridge
Crossing between Jordan and the West Bank on Sunday morning.
France
foiled 3 Olympic attack plots, with Israelis among the targets –
official-French prosecutor says Israeli team wasn’t ‘specifically’ aimed
at; five people arrested, facing terrorism-related charges-By AP 11
September 2024, 3:19 pm
PARIS — French authorities foiled three
plots to attack the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris and other
cities that hosted the summer events, the national counterterrorism
prosecutor said on Wednesday.Olivier Christen said the plots included
plans to attack “Israeli institutions or representatives of Israel in
Paris” during the July 26 to August 11 Olympic competition. The
prosecutor told broadcaster France Info that “the Israeli team itself
was not specifically targeted.” He did not give further details. In all,
five people, including a minor, were arrested on suspicion of
involvement in the three foiled plots against the Summer Games, which
were held against the backdrop of the ongoing war in Gaza and Russia’s
war in Ukraine. The suspects are facing various terrorism-related
charges while they remain in pre-trial detention, the prosecutor
said.France was on its highest security alert in the months ahead of the
Olympics and Paralympics, which wrapped up last week. During
preparations for the Games, French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin
repeatedly warned that security threats included those from Islamic
extremist groups, violent environmental activists, far-right groups and
cyberattacks from Russia or other adversaries. In May, members of the
General Directorate of Internal Security arrested an 18-year-old man
from Chechnya on suspicion of being behind a plan to attack Olympic
soccer events that were held in the southern city of Saint-Etienne.The
planned attack was to target “bar-type establishments around the
Geoffroy stadium,” the prosecutor said. The suspect is accused of
planning “a violent action” on behalf of the Islamic State group’s
jihadist ideology.Jihadists threats dominated the foiled plots and 80
percent of legal proceedings against suspects include the extremist
ideology that still influences France’s youth, the prosecutor said. The
Islamic State group continues to “spread propaganda,” he
added.Preventive measures included increased house searches and house
arrests before the start of the Olympics, the prosecutor said, adding
that police and other security personnel conducted 936 house searches so
far in 2024, compared to 153 last year.
Islamists make gains in
Jordan vote overshadowed by Gaza war-Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated
Islamic Action Front rides popular anger against Israel to snag up to
20% of seats, turnout low in initial figures but up slightly from last
election-By Agencies and ToI Staff 11 September 2024, 3:00 pm
Jordan’s
Islamist opposition made significant gains in parliamentary elections,
boosted by anger over Israel’s war in Gaza, initial official results
showed on Wednesday. The Islamist Action Front also benefited from a new
electoral law that encourages a bigger role for political parties in the
138-seat parliament, though tribal and pro-government factions will
continue to dominate the assembly. The Front, the political arm of the
Muslim Brotherhood, won up to a fifth of the seats under the revamped
electoral law, which for the first time allocated 41 seats for parties,
according to preliminary figures seen by Reuters and confirmed by
independent and official sources.“The Jordanian people have given us
their trust by voting for us. This new phase will increase the burden of
responsibility for the party towards the nation and our citizens,” Wael
al Saqqa, head of the party, told Reuters.Tuesday’s vote represents a
modest step in a democratization process launched by King Abdullah II as
he seeks to insulate Jordan from the conflicts at its borders, and
respond to demands for robust political reforms.Under Jordan’s
constitution, most powers still rest with the king, who appoints
governments and can dissolve parliament. The assembly can force a
cabinet to resign by a vote of no confidence. The voting system still
favors sparsely populated tribal and provincial regions over the densely
populated cities mostly inhabited by Jordanians of Palestinian descent,
which are Islamic strongholds and highly politicized.Turnout among
Jordan’s 5.1 million eligible voters in Tuesday’s poll was low at 32.25
percent, initial official figures showed, up slightly from 29% in the
last election in 2020.Candidates had expressed worries ahead of the
election that the war in Gaza could dampen turnout, hurting chances for
more significant gains by Islamists who had sought to capitalize on
public anger against Israel.“The Gaza war and the Palestinian cause
occupy a major place in Jordanian elections, as all eyes and minds are
on Gaza and Palestine and the massacres taking place there against the
Palestinian people,” IAF candidate Saleh Armouti said ahead of the
vote.Jordanian officials say the fact that elections are being held at
all while the war in Gaza and other regional conflicts are raging
demonstrates their country’s relative stability. The Muslim Brotherhood
has been allowed to operate in Jordan since 1946. But it fell under
suspicion after the Arab Spring, which saw Islamists pitted against
established powers in many Arab countries. They have led some of the
largest protests in the region in support of the Hamas terror group,
their ideological allies, in what their opponents say led to bolstered
popularity.Jordan’s top court in 2020 dissolved the country’s branch of
the Muslim Brotherhood, citing the group’s failure to “rectify its legal
status.”Slain soldier named as Staff Sgt. Geri Gideon Hanghal.
IDF
soldier killed as Palestinian tanker rams West Bank bus stop-Footage
shows truck careening full speed into guard post near recently legalized
Givat Assaf settlement; 7 Palestinians said killed in separate
airstrikes on Tubas and Tulkarem-By Emanuel Fabian-and ToI Staff 11
September 2024, 1:42 pmUpdated at 12:24 am
An Israeli soldier was
run over and killed Wednesday at a West Bank bus stop in an apparent
attack by the driver of a fuel tanker, reinforcing worries that violence
in the territory could continue to heat up.The incident, outside an
Israeli settlement near Ramallah, came as security officials have
reportedly sought to beef up anti-terror activity in the West Bank, and
hours after Palestinians reported that five people had been killed in an
Israel Defense Forces drone strike in a town in the West Bank’s Jordan
Valley.Footage from the scene of the attack showed a truck with
Palestinian license plates veer off a busy highway and barrel full speed
into an IDF guard post adjacent to a bus stop before coming to a
halt. The Magen David Adom ambulance service said it treated an Israeli
man in his 20s who suffered critical injuries in the attack. He was
pronounced dead at the scene and later identified by the military as a
soldier. He was named by the IDF as Staff Sgt. Geri Gideon Hanghal, 24,
of the Kfir Brigade’s Nahshon Battalion, from the northern city of Nof
Hagalil. The assailant was shot at the scene by soldiers and an armed
civilian, the IDF said, describing the incident as terrorism. Forces
deployed to the scene were setting up roadblocks, the army added. The
apparent assault occurred on Route 60 outside Givat Assaf, a former
wildcat outpost that the government retroactively legalized in late
June, though the settlement’s homes remain unauthorized amid claims that
they were placed on private Palestinian land. The suspect was named by
Israeli security sources as 58-year-old Hayil Dhaifallah, from the
central West Bank town of Rafat. His condition was not immediately
clear, the Palestinian Authority’s official mouthpiece Wafa reported. The
IDF later operated at the assailant’s home to measure it for potential
demolition. The apparent attack was the latest to raise fears of a
drastic resurgence in violence in the West Bank, after a series of
attempted suicide bombings claimed by Hamas in recent weeks as well as a
shooting attack on the Jordanian border Sunday that killed three
Israelis.According to Israeli authorities, 33 people including Israeli
security personnel have been killed in terror attacks in Israel and the
West Bank since October 7, when the war against Hamas in Gaza started
with the terror group’s massacre in southern Israel. Another six members
of the security forces were killed in clashes with terror operatives in
the West Bank over that period.Much of the violence over the past month
has taken part in areas of the West Bank outside the northern third of
the territory where the IDF has concentrated anti-terror efforts in
recent years, including a major 10-day operation in refugee camps
connected to Jenin, Tulkarem and the Jordan Valley town of Tubas that
ended Saturday. The Palestinian health ministry in the West Bank said
Wednesday that five Palestinians were killed in an airstrike in Tubas
overnight. Another two people were injured by Israeli fire, one
critically, as troops raided Tubas and the neighboring town of Tammun,
Wafa reported. An IDF spokesperson confirmed carrying out an airstrike,
saying it targeted members of a terror cell. The military later confirmed
a separate drone strike in Tulkarem, but did not immediately provide
further details. The Palestinian Red Crescent reported two Palestinians
were killed in the strike.Palestinian authorities did not say whether
those killed or injured by Israeli fire were civilians or members of
armed groups.Once a rare occurrence, the IDF has carried out more than
70 airstrikes in the West Bank since October 7, using drones, attack
helicopters, and fighter jets.A report earlier this week suggested that
defense brass were increasingly worried that the violence in the West
Bank could swell into a major conflagration, with the military already
stretched by intense fighting against Hamas in the Gaza Strip and
Lebanese terror group Hezbollah on the northern border.According to
Channel 12 news, the heads of various security agencies told the cabinet
Sunday that Israel “must do everything to avoid another front,” warning
that “what is happening in the West Bank could blow up in all of our
faces.”Israeli officials have previously said that the violence is being
helped along by Iran-backed groups smuggling weapons into the West Bank
from Jordan and encouraging attacks.Hardline Israeli settlers in the
central and northern West Bank have also appeared to step up attacks on
Palestinians in recent weeks, including a fiery rampage on a village
last month in which a Palestinian man was killed while trying to
confront the rioters. On Wednesday, the Yesh Din organization said
extremist youths burned and cut down dozens of olive trees belonging to a
Palestinian farmer from the village of Burin in the northern West
Bank.Video footage shared by Yesh Din, an Israeli group that campaigns
against settler violence, showed masked individuals holding chainsaws
and wearing religious Jewish garb leaving an olive grove as fires burn
by several trees. The group was later seen walking toward a yeshiva in
Yitzhar, a settlement with a long history of extremism southwest of
Burin.According to the PA health ministry, more than 670 West Bank
Palestinians have been killed by Israelis since October 7. The IDF says
the vast majority of them were gunmen killed in exchanges of fire,
rioters who clashed with troops or terrorists carrying out
attacks.Troops have arrested some 5,000 wanted Palestinians across the
West Bank over the same time period, including more than 2,000
affiliated with Hamas.Jeremy Sharon contributed to this report.
Iranian
president makes first trip abroad to Iraq in bid to tighten
ties-Pezeshkian to meet officials in Baghdad, visit Kurdish zone where
Iran has attacked separatists and alleged Israeli site, as Tehran looks
to key neighbor amid tensions with West-By Agencies 11 September 2024,
11:54 am
Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian traveled to Iraq on
Wednesday on his first trip abroad, hoping to cement Tehran’s ties to
Baghdad amid regional tensions threatening to pull the Middle East into a
widening war.For Iran, its relationship with Iraq remains crucial for
economic, political and religious reasons — something that has
especially been true since the US-led 2003 invasion of Iraq toppled
dictator Saddam Hussein, who had launched a bloody, years-long war
against Iran in the 1980s.Baghdad, meanwhile, has been trying to
calibrate its relationship with Tehran, which backs powerful Shiite
militias in the country, as well as with the United States, which
maintains a force of 2,500 troops in Iraq that remain in battle with
remnants of the once-dominant extremist Islamic State group. The American
troops remain both a literal and rhetorical target for Iran and its
proxies, who have staged attacks on both US troops and Israeli cities
over the last 11 months in solidarity with Hamas amid Israel’s military
campaign to topple the terror group and free hostages in the Gaza
Strip.Just before Pezeshkian’s arrival, an explosion struck a site near
Baghdad International Airport used by the US military Tuesday night. The
circumstances of the explosion were not clear and there was no
immediate information on damages or casualties.Pezeshkian, a relative
moderate who was sworn in as Iran’s new president in July, will meet
senior Iraqi officials in Baghdad, he said ahead of the trip, according
to Iran state media. He is also scheduled to visit Shiite shrines in the
cities of Karbala and Najaf, a railroad project linking the southern
port city of Basra to Iran, and Irbil, the capital of northern Iraq’s
semiautonomous Kurdish region.“We are planning to sign several
agreements,” Iran’s state media quoted Pezeshkian as saying.Ahead of the
trip, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told an Iraqi television
channel that Pezeshkian hoped to tighten security relations with
Baghdad, as well as economic ties.“We want to see Iraq develop, grow, be
prosperous and strong on our borders, and any economic project that
achieves this goal enjoys our support,” Araghchi told Al-Furat
Television, owned by Iraqi Shiite cleric and politician Ammar
al-Hakim.Still, there have been tensions between the former arch-foes,
particularly over Iranian missile attacks on sites in Iraq over the past
six years. The assaults have targeted Kurdish militias, a base housing
American forces and also what Tehran alleged was an Israeli site in
Iraq. US airstrikes in Iraq and on the border with Syria have targeted
the militias in response to attacks on American forces.Iran also fired
missiles and flew drones over Iraq in its unprecedented direct attack on
Israel in April. That attack followed a suspected Israeli strike on an
Iranian diplomatic compound in Damascus, Syria, that killed two Iranian
generals and five officers, as well as a member of the Lebanese Shiite
militia Hezbollah, an Iranian ally. The Islamic Republic has also
threatened further retaliation against Israel over the July
assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, which could
include another missile barrage. Israel has not claimed responsibility
for the killing.Baghdad has also tried to tackle Iranian concerns over
regional separatist groups, moving to relocate some members in a 2023
security pact with Tehran. For Iraq, close ties with the Shiite
powerhouse next door are essential to maintain Iranian imports of
natural gas necessary to meet its electricity needs.A barter deal for
Iraqi crude oil has seen the supply continue, though US sanctions
targeting Tehran over its rapidly advancing nuclear program have put
pressure on Baghdad to cut economic ties.On Tuesday, the United States
and Britain formally accused Iran of supplying short-range ballistic
missiles to Russia to use against Ukraine, announcing new sanctions on
both Moscow and Tehran.
illed reservists named as Daniel Alloush,
Tom Ish-Shalom-2 soldiers killed, several injured in helicopter crash
in south Gaza-Black Hawk flew to Rafah to evacuate seriously wounded
combat engineer; due to unknown reason, it failed to touch down
correctly in IDF encampment-By Emanuel Fabian-11 September 2024, 11:55
amUpdated at 1:44 pm
Two soldiers were killed and several were
injured when an Israeli Air Force helicopter crashed in the southern
Gaza Strip early Wednesday, in what the military described as an
accident. They were named by the Israel Defense Forces as Sgt. Maj.
(res.) Daniel Alloush, 37, from Tel Aviv, and Sgt. Maj. (res.) Tom
Ish-Shalom, 38, from Nes Harim. Both served in the IAF’s elite search and
rescue Unit 669.According to an initial IAF probe, a UH-60 Black Hawk
from the 123rd Squadron flew to Rafah with a Unit 669 medical team on
Tuesday night to evacuate a combat engineer seriously wounded in
fighting in the area.During the final landing stage inside an Israeli
army encampment in Rafah at around 12:30 a.m., the helicopter impacted
the ground instead of touching down correctly.According to the probe,
the helicopter was not hit by enemy fire, and the crash occurred moments
before it was supposed to land, meaning it did not fall from a
significant height. The helicopter was still heavily damaged in the
crash, and all those aboard it were injured. In all, two soldiers were
killed and another eight were taken to hospitals — including the combat
engineer who was injured separately during fighting in Rafah.Among the
seriously wounded in the crash were two pilots and a mechanic with the
IAF’s 123rd Squadron; and a reservist doctor and another soldier with
Unit 669.Additionally, a reservist Unit 669 doctor and another mechanic
with the 123rd Squadron were moderately wounded in the crash, the IDF
said. The seriously wounded combat engineer, who was supposed to be
evacuated by the crashed Black Hawk, served with the 710th Combat
Engineering Battalion. It was still unclear what led to the crash,
although the IAF described it as an accident.IAF Chief Maj. Gen. Tomer
Bar ordered a probe to determine why the helicopter impacted the ground
in the encampment instead of landing correctly.Black Hawk helicopters,
known in the IAF as the Yanshuf — Owl in Hebrew — are used for both
routine transportation missions and to drop off and pick up troops
during military operations. Amid the war in Gaza, the choppers have been
used for medical evacuations from inside the Strip, taking close to
2,000 wounded soldiers to hospitals in Israel.
‘State of
Palestine’ takes seat in UN General Assembly despite lack of full
membership-Israeli envoy decries May decision granting Palestinian
delegation new rights, including to submit proposals and amendments, as
‘a reward for terrorism’By AFP and ToI Staff 11 September 2024, 6:35 am
UNITED
NATIONS — Palestinians took a seat among member states at the UN
General Assembly on Tuesday, a new right accorded to the Palestinian
Authority’s delegation despite it not being a full member of the body.In
May, an overwhelming majority of the General Assembly asserted that
Palestinians deserved full membership, a move that has been blocked by
the United States, which along with Israel says recognition of
Palestinian statehood must come through a peace agreement. The General
Assembly granted the delegation certain new rights in a resolution,
which still excludes it from being able to vote or be a member of the
Security Council.Starting with the 79th General Assembly session, which
began Tuesday, the Palestinians can submit proposals and amendments, and
sit among member states. The Palestinian Authority’s envoy to the United
Nations, Riyad Mansour, took his place on Tuesday afternoon at a table
marked “State of Palestine” between Sri Lanka and Sudan.“This is not
merely a procedural matter. This is a historic moment for us,” said
Egyptian Ambassador Osama Mahmoud Abdelkhalek Mahmoud.Just as during the
resolution’s adoption, Israel denounced the move.“Any decision and or
action that improves the status of the Palestinians, either in the UN
General Assembly or bilaterally, is currently a reward… for terrorism in
general and the Hamas terrorists in particular,” said Jonathan Miller,
deputy Israel ambassador to the United Nations. In April, amid the war in
Gaza started by Hamas’s October 7 terror onslaught in southern Israel,
the Palestinians — who have had “non-member observer state” status since
2012 — relaunched a full membership bid.Full membership would not only
need a vote by the General Assembly but would also require a Security
Council recommendation. The United States, Israel’s staunch ally, vetoed a
Security Council recommendation on the matter on April 18.
US grants Egypt entire $1.3 billion in military aid, waiving human rights requirements-By Reuters-SEP 11,24
The
Biden administration notifies the US Congress that it will provide
Egypt with $1.3 billion in military aid, a State Department spokesperson
says, the first time since 2020 Egypt will receive the total amount of
US funding despite human rights conditions. The announcement comes as
Washington has relied heavily on Cairo — a longstanding US ally — to
mediate so far unsuccessful talks between Israel and Hamas on a
ceasefire deal to end the war in Gaza.Of the $1.3 billion in US foreign
military financing allocated to Egypt, $320 million is subject to
conditions that have meant at least some of that sum has been withheld
in recent years.Secretary of State Antony Blinken tells Congres that he
waived a certification requirement on $225 million related to Egypt’s
human rights record this year citing “the US national security
interest,” the spokesperson says by email.“This decision is important to
advancing regional peace and Egypt’s specific and ongoing contributions
to US national security priorities, particularly to finalize a
ceasefire agreement for Gaza, bring the hostages home, surge
humanitarian assistance for Palestinians in need, and help bring an
enduring end to the Israel-Hamas conflict,” the spokesperson
says.Blinken issued a similar same waiver on the human rights conditions
last year but withheld a portion of the military aid over Egypt’s
failure to make “clear and consistent progress” on the release of
political prisoners. This year, Blinken determined that Egypt had made
sufficient efforts on political prisoners to release $95 million tied to
progress on the issue, the spokesperson said.
Canadian FM says
she has recently suspended 30 permits for arm shipments to Israel-‘We
won’t have any form of arms or parts of arms be sent to Gaza,’ says
Melanie Joly, adding she ordered review of all weapons contracts with
Israel and other countries-By AFP 11 September 2024, 4:41 am
OTTAWA,
Ontario — Canada has suspended some 30 permits for arms shipments to
Israel, including a rare move against a US company’s Canadian
subsidiary’s deal with the US government, the foreign minister said
Tuesday. All of the export permits had been approved prior to a January
ban on new sales of weapons that could be used in Gaza, which is facing a
mounting humanitarian crisis amid the ongoing war started by the
Hamas-led October 7 terror atrocities in southern Israel.Foreign
Minister Melanie Joly said she had ordered a review of all Canadian
weapons suppliers’ contracts with Israel and other countries.“Following
that, I suspended this summer around 30 existing permits of Canadian
companies,” she said.A key ally of the United States, which provides
Israel with billions of dollars a year in military aid, Canada drew the
ire of Israeli leaders when it initially announced it would halt new
arms shipments to Israel as of January 8.Pro-Palestinian protests
against Israel across Canada — at universities, political events and
even the Toronto International Film Festival last week — have continued
to put pressure on the government to go further.“Our policy is clear: We
will not have any form of arms or parts of arms be sent to Gaza.
Period,” Joly said.“How they’re being sent and where they’re being sent
is irrelevant,” she continued, alluding to ammunition that was meant to
have been produced by a Canadian division of US defense contractor
General Dynamics for the Israel Defense Forces.Joly added that the
government is in contact about this issue with General Dynamics. The
topic of arms deliveries to Israel has triggered legal proceedings in
several countries around the world.Israel has historically been a top
receiver of Canadian arms exports, with Can$21 million worth of military
material exported to Israel in 2022, according to government data,
following Can$26 million in shipments in 2021.That placed Israel among
the top 10 recipients of Canadian arms exports.Britain last week also
said it would suspend some arms exports to Israel, asserting a “clear
risk” that they could be used in a serious breach of international
humanitarian law, a move that was strongly denounced by Israeli
leaders.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.
Man

attack allegedly planned for Oct. 7 anniversary-By AP and ToI Staff 11

NANAIMO, British Columbia — A Pakistani
man arrested last week in Quebec and accused of plotting to attack a
Jewish center in Brooklyn came to Canada on a student visa, Canada’s
Immigration Minister Marc Miller said Tuesday.Miller said Muhammad
Shahzeb Khan, 20, was granted a student visa in May 2023 and arrived in
Toronto in June of that year. Miller said he wouldn’t provide any more
details since the case is before the courts.Authorities in the US allege
Khan planned to use guns and knives to carry out a mass shooting in
support of the Islamic State jihadist group on the one-year anniversary
of the devastating October 7 attack by Hamas that sparked the ongoing
conflict in Gaza and elsewhere in the Middle East. The Conservative
opposition party in Canada have been demanding the government answer
questions about how Khan was allowed into the country.“We take any
security breach and any entry into Canada very seriously,” Miller said.
“Let’s not be naïve. A determined individual can gain access to this
country and that is for the security services inside our country to
apprehend this person if they commit a crime or if they’re about to
commit a crime.”Miller added that Canada’s police forces “did their
jobs” by arresting the individual and that “we’ll let the court case
take its course.”Earlier this year a man and his son were arrested for
allegedly plotting to carry out a terror attack in Toronto. The father,
Ahmed Fouad Mostafa Eldidi, has Canadian citizenship but the son,
Mostafa Eldidi, does not.The father is also accused of committing an
aggravated assault in 2015 for the benefit of Islamic State somewhere
outside of Canada.
IDF hits Hezbollah launchers after rocket
fire; Gallant to troops: Prepare for ground op-Military says it struck a

defense minister says ‘center of gravity is moving’ from Gaza to the

Hezbollah
rocket launchers used to fire some 45 rockets at northern Israel on
Tuesday were targeted in IDF drone strikes, while Defense Minister Yoav
Gallant told troops the military was in the process of shifting its
attention from Gaza to Lebanon.A barrage of 30 rockets was launched at
the Mount Meron area in the afternoon, with the Israel Defense Forces
reporting that some were intercepted and others struck open areas.
Another 15 rockets were fired at the Western Galilee, some of which were
intercepted by air defenses, the IDF added. There were no injuries in
the attacks. The launchers were later hit in southern Lebanon’s at-Tiri
and Mansouri, according to the military.Additionally, Israeli fighter
jets struck a building used by Hezbollah in Rachaf, the IDF added. The
military also confirmed that several drones were launched from Lebanon
at northern Israel earlier in the evening.Hezbollah rocket launchers

September 10, 2024-The IDF said some of the drones were shot down, while
others impacted near Kibbutz Ami’ad in the Upper Galilee. There were no
injuries.Footage showed a Hezbollah drone flying over northern Israel,
as sirens sounded in Rosh Pina and several other towns.Hezbollah took
responsibility for the attack, claiming to have targeted an Israeli
military site. The IDF also said fighter jets struck a Hezbollah weapons
manufacturing plant in southern Lebanon’s Jouaiyya earlier in the day,
along with a command room and other buildings used by the terror group
in Nabatieh, Mansouri, and Kafr Kila.Separately, the IDF said a cell of
Hezbollah operatives spotted in southern Lebanon’s Houla was targeted in
an airstrike.Speaking to troops during a drill simulating a ground
offensive in Lebanon, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Israel is
shifting its focus to the northern front as it aims to soon achieve its
objectives in the Gaza Strip.“The center of gravity is moving to the
north, we are nearing the completion of our missions in the south, but
we have a task here that has not been carried out, and this mission is
to change the security situation and return the residents to their
homes,” he told reservists of the Oded Brigade in northern Israel. Some
60,000 Israelis have been displaced from their homes amid daily attacks
by Hezbollah on northern Israel. Returning the displaced residents of
the north to their homes is part of Israel’s war goals, alongside
dismantling Hamas and returning the hostages kidnapped by the terror
group on October 7.“These instructions you are waiting for, I gave in
the south and saw the forces at work,” Gallant said, referring to
Israel’s ground offensive in Gaza. He added that such orders “will come
here as well and you should be prepared and ready to carry out this
mission.”“We are finishing training the entire order of battle for a
ground operation [in Lebanon], in all its aspects,” Gallant
continued.“I’ve already seen in many circumstances where I stood next to
troops who told me: ‘You are just talking.’ After a week I met them on
the ground,” he added to the reserve soldiers.Since October 8,
Hezbollah-led forces have attacked Israeli communities and military
posts along the border on a near-daily basis, with the group saying it
is doing so to support Gaza amid the war there. So far, the skirmishes
have resulted in 26 civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the
deaths of 20 IDF soldiers and reservists. There have also been several
attacks from Syria, without any injuries.Hezbollah has named 434 members
who have been killed by Israel during the ongoing skirmishes, mostly in
Lebanon but some also in Syria. Another 78 operatives from other terror
groups, a Lebanese soldier, and dozens of civilians have also been
killed.Tensions have been particularly high in recent weeks, with
Hezbollah vowing retaliation for Israel’s assassination of its top
military commander in Beirut in July. Israel said it foiled part of the
terror group’s response to the killing last month, when IDF fighter jets
struck thousands of Hezbollah rocket launcher barrels in southern
Lebanon, including some believed to be aimed at Mossad
headquarters.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Israel Defense Forces on Tuesday. The video showed IDF Spokesman Rear

on the ground, where the hostages were murdered.Hostages Hersh

and Almog Sarusi were executed in the tunnel by their captors on August
29, before being discovered by troops on August 31.Alongside the
footage, the IDF released new details on the tunnel and the operation to
find the bodies of the six murdered Israelis, including that they were
being held only some 700 meters away from where another hostage had been
rescued alive days earlier. The tunnel where their bodies were found is a
narrow 120-meter-long passageway — not tall enough to stand in without
bending over — that connected parts of a large underground network in
the Tel Sultan neighborhood, which according to the IDF belonged to
Hamas’s Rafah Brigade. The tunnel network was one of the largest
underground complexes found by the army in Gaza to date, military
sources said.Inside the tunnel, located some 20 meters underground, the
IDF found food and equipment that it assessed were used by the Hamas
terrorists and the Israeli hostages to survive underground for extended
periods.According to IDF sources, the supplies were enough to survive in
the tunnel for at least several weeks.Among the items found in the
tunnel were dried food, water, a bucket used as a makeshift toilet,
numerous bottles of urine, mattresses, and assault rifle magazines. The
video was shown to the families recently and to members of the Israeli
cabinet.“The tunnel shaft was in a children’s room, in a house,” Hagari
said in the video, pointing to Disney characters painted on the walls
above the 20-meter-deep shaft. “Snow White and Mickey Mouse on the wall,
[above] a tunnel shaft, where the hostages were murdered downstairs,”
he said.“Here you see their blood on the floor. Here you see their last
moments, and here they were brutally murdered,” a visibly sweating
Hagari said in a Hebrew-language version of the video, while inside the
tunnel.“They were here in this tunnel in horrific conditions, where
there is no air to breathe, where you cannot stand. They survived, but
they were murdered by terrorists,” Hagari said in an English-language
video.“There are still hostages, 101, some of them are alive in the same
conditions in tunnels like this in Gaza. We need to do everything we
can… to bring them back home alive,” he added. The military said it did
not have any concrete or real-time intelligence on the six hostages
being held there in the weeks before they were murdered, but had general
indications that Israeli abductees could be in the neighborhood, and
therefore had operated carefully above ground and even more so
underground. After spotting Israeli forces approaching the area, the
Hamas terrorists guarding the six hostages decided to execute them, the
terror group has hinted. Israel also believes this is what transpired. On
August 30, the IDF discovered the tunnel shaft in a children’s room in a
home that had been blocked up by Hamas.A day later, on August 31,
troops finally managed to enter the tunnel using heavy machinery, where
inside they discovered a locked blast door — believed to have been
locked by the terrorists who murdered the six hostages. Later that day,
the bodies of the six were found.By early on September 1, they were
extracted and brought to Israel for identification and burial. Also on
August 30, the IDF said troops killed two Hamas gunmen who attempted to
flee from the tunnel complex.Their bodies were taken to Israel to run
DNA testing to determine if they were the terrorists who killed the six
hostages. The IDF believed that at least two terrorists killed the
six.Two days before the six hostages were murdered, on August 27, the
IDF rescued hostage Farhan al-Qadi from a tunnel — part of the same
network — located less than 700 meters away. There was no direct passage
between the tunnel where al-Qadi was found and the bodies of the six
hostages, as Hamas had blocked the route. Al-Qadi also did not know
about the six hostages being held nearby, according to military
sources. On the night between August 27 and 28, troops exchanged fire
with three Hamas gunmen who had attempted to flee from the major tunnel
network where al-Qadi was found. All three Hamas operatives and one
Israeli soldier, Staff Sgt. Amit Friedman, were killed in the
exchange. The IDF had been operating in Tel Sultan for several weeks to
locate tunnel shafts as part of the major Hamas underground network in
the area, one of which would later lead soldiers to the bodies of the
six hostages.Names leaked-The IDF’s Information Security Department was
also investigating how the names of the six hostages were leaked on
social media hours before the bodies were brought out of Gaza for
identification, while the troops were still inside the tunnel.Hagari
said the leak not only affected the families who heard about the deaths
of their loved ones on social media, but also endangered troops who had
still been operating in the tunnel complex. It is believed that 97 of the
251 hostages abducted by Hamas on October 7 now remain in Gaza,
including the bodies of at least 33 confirmed dead by the IDF.Hamas
released 105 civilians during a weeklong truce in late November, and
four hostages were released before that. Eight hostages have been
rescued by troops alive, and the bodies of 37 hostages have also been
recovered, including three mistakenly killed by the military as they
tried to escape their captors.Hamas is also holding two Israeli
civilians who entered the Strip in 2014 and 2015, as well as the bodies
of two IDF soldiers who were killed in 2014.Senior officer wounded in
tunnel collapse-Highlighting the dangers of operating in Hamas tunnels
in Gaza, Col. (res.) Golan Vach, a senior Home Front Command search and
rescue officer, was wounded in a tunnel collapse in the central Gaza
Strip on Tuesday. The incident came amid efforts to investigate and
demolish tunnels in the area, the IDF said.Vach was trapped inside the
tunnel and later rescued, before being taken to a hospital in Israel. He
was listed in stable condition.Hamas battalion commander killedAlso on
Tuesday, the IDF announced that the commander of Hamas’s Tel Sultan
Battalion in the terror group’s Rafah Brigade — where the bodies of the
six hostages were found — was killed in a drone strike several weeks
ago.Mahmoud Hamdan was killed alongside three company commanders in the
Tel Sultan Battalion, according to the IDF.The military said that
additional strikes killed several more top commanders in the battalion,
along with dozens of operatives. The IDF said Hamdan took a “significant
part” in planning the October 7 onslaught, and was involved in other
attacks amid the ongoing war.

CIRCUS ACT.
Despite pessimism, Blinken says US will
present new hostage deal proposal ‘very soon’ Speaking alongside UK
counterpart in London, US Secretary of State says ‘not even a handful of
issues’ remain as diplomats try to shift gloomy projections-By Lazar
Berman-10 September 2024, 7:39 pm
Standing alongside his British
counterpart David Lammy in London, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken
indicated that a new formula for a hostage deal would be presented to
Israel and Hamas in the near future.“Very soon, we will put that before
the parties and we will see what they say,” he said in a press
conference, as pessimism has spread among Israeli and US negotiators in
recent days.An Israeli official told The Times of Israel that Jerusalem
neither knows whether a new proposal will be presented nor what would be
in it.The comments come after reports indicated growing pessimism in
the US that a deal will be possible, with a senior US official
describing new Hamas demands that terrorists serving life sentences be
released for civilian hostages in the first stage as a “poison pill,” in
remarks reported by The Washington Post Sunday. Also Sunday, unnamed
Israeli sources told Channel 12 that the chances of a phased
hostage-ceasefire agreement being achieved on the basis of Israel’s May
proposal are “close to zero” and there is “very broad pessimism” among
the Israeli negotiators. But Blinken and Lammy sounded more optimistic at
the press conference after they held a private meeting that focused on
support for Ukraine.“More than 90 percent of the issues have been
agreed, decided, so we’re down to a handful of issues — not even a
handful of issues — that are hard but are fully resolvable,” said
Blinken.Lammy concurred, noting that the 90% assessment is “completely
correct,” and said it is now “in the hands of [Prime Minister Benjamin]
Netanyahu and [Hamas leader Yahya] Sinwar to get us over the line and to
take that deal that is on the table.”The US is working closely with
Qatar and Egypt “to bridge any remaining gaps” between Israel and Hamas
as they craft a new formula for a deal, said Blinken. He noted the
“strong interest that everyone in the region has” in a ceasefire,
stressing that it is “clearly in Israel’s interest.”While Lammy
emphasized that “there can be no role for Hamas going forward,” Blinken
did not mention the defeat of Hamas.White House officials told senior
Egyptian and Qatari officials on Monday that the US was “frustrated”
with new Hamas demands on the release of prisoners serving life
sentences in Israeli prisons, which it is seeking in exchange for
hostages it has held since October 7, according to a person familiar
with the discussions. The Biden administration also asked Cairo and Doha
to push Hamas to back off its recent demands, according to the source,
who wasn’t authorized to speak publicly and spoke on condition of
anonymity. After talks failed to advance in recent weeks, the US was
widely expected to put forward a new proposal to bridge gaps between the
sides on a hostage and ceasefire deal. But with Hamas’s hardened
stance, an Israeli official told The Times of Israel on Monday that the
US was being cautious and did not want to release a proposal it knows
Hamas will reject. It appears that plan is back on course.Reports Sunday
indicated that there was broad pessimism over chances for a deal both
among Israeli negotiators and US mediators, who were unhappy with both
Hamas’s demands and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s insistence that
troops remain on the Gaza-Egypt border, as well as his recent public
comments. However, two senior US officials involved in hostage
negotiations told a policy conference in Washington, DC, on Monday that
disagreements over the Philadelphi Corridor on the border, which Israel
says will be used by Hamas to smuggle in arms from the Sinai, were not
the reason there is no deal.Instead, according to the Ynet news site,
they blamed the new Hamas demands. The officials at the invitation-only
Middle East-America Dialogue reportedly noted that the Philadelphi
Corridor is not even mentioned in the existing proposal. Rather, the
point of contention is whether the route is considered to be in a
densely populated area; the current proposal stipulates an Israeli
withdrawal from such areas. The issue is “exaggerated,” they said, adding
that the prisoner release is the main sticking point. They claimed
there had been agreement on the issue, but progress was derailed when
Hamas murdered six hostages in late August and the terms of the swap
were changed.Contradicting reports and comments indicating that the US
had lost patience with Israel as well as Hamas, the officials reportedly
claimed that Israel did not need to be pressured, and said families of
hostages were mistaken to denounce Netanyahu over the lack of a deal.At
times, they allowed, Israel could do a bit more, but they are focused on
Hamas. It is believed that 97 hostages abducted during Hamas’s October 7
onslaught remain in Gaza, including the bodies of at least 33 confirmed
dead by the IDF.The shock assault saw thousands of Hamas-led terrorists
storm southern Israel to kill nearly 1,200 people and take 251
hostages.Hamas released 105 civilians during a weeklong truce in late
November, and four hostages were released before that.Eight hostages
have been rescued by troops alive, and the bodies of 37 hostages have
also been recovered, including three mistakenly killed by the Israeli
military as they tried to escape their captors.

Western powers sanction Iran over missiles to Russia.By Shaun TANDON.
London
(AFP) Sept 11, 2024-Western powers on Tuesday announced fresh sanctions
on Iran for supplying Russia with short-range missiles for imminent use
against Ukraine, calling it a dangerous escalation of the conflict that
threatened European security.Britain, France and Germany said they
would cut aviation agreements with the Islamic republic and sanction its
national carrier Iran Air, claiming Tehran had repeatedly defied
warnings about the weapons transfers."This act is an escalation by both
Iran and Russia, and is a direct threat to European security," the
so-called E3 powers said in a joint statement.President Joe Biden
meanwhile said the United States was considering lifting restrictions on
Ukraine using long-range, US-made missiles against Russia to help it
defend itself in return."We're working that out right now," Biden told
reporters at the White House. On a visit to London, US Secretary of State
Antony Blinken warned that the Iranian missiles could be used against
Ukraine "within weeks".Dozens of Russian military personnel have trained
in Iran using the Fath-360 missile, which has a range of 75 miles (120
kilometres), he added. The British government announced soon afterwards
that it had already begun "the termination of all direct air services
between the UK and Iran".Washington accused Iran Air of "operating or
having operated in the transportation sector of the Russian Federation
economy", sanctioning it and 10 individuals and companies involved in
the supply.- 'False and misleading' -The move was dismissed In Iran,
where foreign ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani said the Western claims
were false and a distraction from US backing for Israel in its war
against Hamas militants."Spreading false and misleading news about the
transfer of Iranian weapons to some countries is just an ugly propaganda
and lie with the aim of concealing the dimensions of the massive
illegal arms support of the United States and some Western countries for
the genocide in the Gaza Strip," he added. On Ukraine, the State
Department said that Blinken would travel to Kyiv on Wednesday in a
solidarity trip with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, as Ukrainian
forces face Russian advances in the east.Moscow has stepped up its
aerial attacks in recent weeks but is also trying to fight off a major
Ukrainian cross-border offensive into its western Kursk region, which
has reshaped the course of the two-and-a-half-year war.Lammy said the
joint trip demonstrated the two countries' commitment to Ukraine, and
comes before UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer visits the White House on
Friday.Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Britain has been
at the forefront of pushing for more assistance to Kyiv, including
loosening restrictions on the use of Western weapons on Russian
territory.Asked about reports that Britain is waiting for a US green
light to let Ukraine use long-range Storm Shadow missiles against
Russia, Lammy said he would not discuss "operational issues" as "the
only person who could benefit" was Russian President Vladimir Putin.Last
week, the UK said that it would send Ukraine 650 new specialist missile
systems after President Volodymyr Zelensky complained of slow
deliveries from the West.- 'Special relationship'-The US-UK "special
relationship" has persevered across partisan lines since Starmer's
Labour ended the Conservatives 14 years in power in July. But for
Starmer, a full alignment with President Joe Biden's Democratic Party
agenda could carry risks just two months before US elections in which
Biden's political heir Kamala Harris is running neck and neck in polls
with Republican Donald Trump. While backing Ukraine, Starmer, a former
human rights lawyer, has taken a harder line than the Conservatives on
Israel, which relies on the United States as its foremost backer in the
Gaza war.His Labour government last week announced restrictions on some
weapons to Israel, voicing concern that they could be used to violate
international humanitarian law.The Labour government has also dropped
its Conservative predecessor's plans to challenge the right of the
International Criminal Court to seek the arrest of Israeli Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
US steps up sanctions over Iran missile deliveries to Russia.
Washington
(AFP) Sept 10, 2024 - The United States on Tuesday unveiled fresh
sanctions against more than a dozen firms and individuals in Russia and
Iran in response to what it called Iran's "escalatory" decision to send
ballistic missiles to Russia. The sanctions targeted 10 people and six
companies for their involvement in supporting Iran's defense sector, and
identified four vessels involved in "enabling Iran's delivery of
weapons components and weapons systems," the US Treasury Department said
in a statement."Today, the United States and our allies are taking
concerted action in response to Iran's reckless decision to proliferate
ballistic missiles to Russia for use in its war of aggression against
Ukraine," deputy Treasury secretary Wally Adeyemo said."Iran has opted
to intensify its involvement in Russia's illegal war, and the United
States, along with our partners, will continue to stand with Ukraine,"
he added.Alongside the sanctions announced Tuesday, "the Department of
State is concurrently designating three entities, including Iran Air,
and identifying five vessels as blocked property involved in the
proliferation of Iranian weapons systems to Russia," the Treasury
Department said.Earlier Tuesday, Britain, France and Germany announced
new sanctions targeting Iran's air transport, including the cancellation
of bilateral air service agreements with the Islamic Republic.A
spokesperson for the Iran's foreign ministry denied that Iran had made
the weapons transfers to Russia, in a message posted on the social media
platform X.
Germany, France, UK slap sanctions on Iran over missiles for Russia.
Berlin
(AFP) Sept 10, 2024 - Germany, France and Britain on Tuesday condemned
what they said was Iran's delivery of ballistic missiles to Russia for
use in the Ukraine war and declared new sanctions targeting air
transport."We will be taking immediate steps to cancel bilateral air
services agreements with Iran," the three European countries said in a
joint statement, adding that they would also "work towards imposing
sanctions on Iran Air".US Secretary of State Antony Blinken earlier had
said, on a visit to London, that Russia had received shipments of the
ballistic missiles and "will likely use them within weeks in
Ukraine".London, Paris and Berlin said that, despite their warnings of
"new and significant measures against Iran" in case it sent missiles,
"we now have confirmation that Iran has made these transfers"."This is a
further escalation of Iran's military support to Russia's war of
aggression against Ukraine and will see Iranian missiles reaching
European soil, increasing the suffering of the Ukrainian people," they
said."This act is an escalation by both Iran and Russia, and is a direct
threat to European security."The three countries said they "will be
taking immediate steps to cancel bilateral air services agreements with
Iran"."In addition, we will pursue the designations of significant
entities and individuals involved with Iran's ballistic missile
programme and the transfer of ballistic missiles and other weapons to
Russia."We will also work towards imposing sanctions on Iran Air," they
said, echoing a step taken by Washington.Shortly before the joint
announcement, Iran's foreign ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani denied
that the Islamic republic had made weapons transfers, in a message on
the social media platform X.He wrote that "spreading false and
misleading news about the transfer of Iranian weapons to some countries"
was "ugly propaganda" and a lie.He charged that its aim was to conceal
"the dimensions of the massive illegal arms support of the United States
and some Western countries for the genocide in the Gaza Strip", where
Israel is at war with Palestinian militant group Hamas.
North Korea fires multiple short-range ballistic missiles.
Seoul,
Sept 11 (AFP) Sep 11, 2024-North Korea fired multiple short range
ballistic missiles into waters east of the Korean peninsula Thursday,
Seoul's military reported, days after the nuclear-armed North marked a
state anniversary.Seoul's Joint Chief of Staff said it had detected
multiple "short-range ballistic missiles launched into the East Sea
around 07:10 from Pyongyang today (2210 GMT on Wednesday)," referring to
the body of water also known as the Sea of Japan. It said it was
analysing details of the launch and "closely sharing information on the
North Korean ballistic missile with the U.S. and Japanese authorities,
while strengthening surveillance and vigilance in preparation for
further launches".Japan's defence ministry also confirmed the launch of
at least one suspected North Korean ballistic missile, with the
coastguard warning vessels to take care.It is Pyongyang's first apparent
weapons test since July 1, and comes days after the isolated,
nuclear-armed country marked a key anniversary celebrating the founding
of the ruling regime.North Korea has regularly launched missiles around
September 9, its foundation day, including conducting its fifth nuclear
test on the same day in 2016.The country's sixth nuclear test was
conducted on September 3 in 2017.At a speech to mark the 76th
anniversary of its founding this week, leader Kim Jong Un said the
country was moving to steadily increase its nuclear arsenal.North Korea
"will steadily strengthen its nuclear force capable of fully coping with
any threatening acts imposed by its nuclear-armed rival states", Kim
said.- Trash balloons -Relations between North and South Korea are at
one of their lowest points in years, with the North recently announcing
the deployment of 250 ballistic missile launchers to its southern
border. The North has also been bombarding the South with trash-carrying
balloons, including a five-day straight blitz last week.North Korea has
sent more than 5,000 trash-filled balloons south since May, saying they
are retaliation for propaganda balloons launched northwards by South
Korean activists. In response, Seoul has suspended a tension-reducing
military deal with Pyongyang and restarted some propaganda broadcasts
from loudspeakers along the border.North Korea has recently bolstered
military ties with Moscow, and analysts have said the North could be
testing and ramping up production of artillery and cruise missiles
before sending them to Russia for use in Ukraine. The United States and
Seoul have accused North Korea of supplying ammunition and missiles for
Russia's war effort, a claim Pyongyang has called "absurd".Earlier this
year, Pyongyang declared the South its "principal enemy".It has
shuttered agencies dedicated to reunification and threatened war over
"even 0.001 mm" of territorial infringement. The North's latest ballistic
missile launch comes weeks after South Korea and the United States
wrapped their annual Ulchi Freedom Shield joint military drills.North
Korea -- which attacked its neighbour in 1950, triggering the Korean War
-- has always been infuriated by joint US-South Korean military
exercises, decrying them as rehearsals for invasion.
