Hurricane Milton disrupts Yom
Kippur plans for Florida Jews-Most rabbis and congregants heed
evacuation orders, taking synagogues’ Torah scrolls with them; Chabad of
Southwest Florida opts to stay open, serving as shelter for the
displaced-By MARIAM FAM, GIOVANNA DELL'ORTO and holly meyer Today, 7:40

WINTER PARK, Florida (AP) — Many Jews worldwide will
mark Yom Kippur in fasting and prayer at their synagogues this
weekend. But for the faithful in Florida, destructive Hurricane Milton
has disrupted plans for observing the Day of Atonement — the holiest day
of the year in the Jewish faith — that begins Friday evening and caps
off the High Holy Days that began with Rosh Hashana on October 2.Across
the storm-threatened areas, rabbis and their congregants spent part of
the Days of Awe — the span between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur —
protecting their homes and synagogues as Milton churned off the coast,
spiraling into a Category 5 storm. Many — though not all — evacuated,
heeding the voluntary and mandatory orders, and found safekeeping for
their synagogues’ Torah scrolls and themselves.Milton hit Florida’s Gulf
Coast on Wednesday as a Category 3 cyclone, with damaging winds, heavy
rains and tornadoes. By Thursday, the storm has moved eastward into the
Atlantic Ocean. Why this Chabad rabbi decided against evacuating before
the storm-Rabbi Yitzchok Minkowicz evacuated most of his family ahead of
the storm, but chose to ride it out with his son, also a rabbi, at
Chabad Lubavitch of Southwest Florida near Fort Myers. The center is
hosting people displaced by the storm, including doctors, first
responders and elderly who cannot evacuate. It’s important to be “with
the people and for the people,” and provide emotional and spiritual
support, he said as the storm approached.Near midnight Thursday, the
Chabad center and the rest of the neighborhood lost power, said
Minkowicz, making them among the millions without it. The center was
spared from the storm surge, but homes and other buildings in the area
were not, he said.“Our pressing need is for power so that we can help
our community & hold Yom Kippur services,” Minkowicz told The
Associated Press via email Thursday. “We’re praying for this to be
resolved asap.”The center planned to host Yom Kippur observances
regardless of the storm. He said it was similar two years ago, when the
holy day followed the major hurricane, Ian.“Yom Kippur is a day that you
open up your soul to God and you totally connect with God,” Minkowicz
said. “When you go through a hurricane, anything materialistic is not
important. They’re already in that zone where they’re totally focused on
God.”Milton disrupts Yom Kippur and October 7 commemoration-Like most
of her congregants, Rabbi Nicole Luna had evacuated after helping secure
Temple Beth El in Fort Myers and entrusting several Torah scrolls to
congregants should the threatened surge devastate the synagogue. While
the congregation braved Hurricanes Irma in 2017 and Ian in 2022,
Milton’s timing hit especially hard, having already forced the
postponement of a community-wide commemoration of Hamas attacking Israel
on October 7, 2023. The Gaza war that followed is ongoing.“It just
feels like too much for our hearts to carry right now,” Luna said from
Miami ahead of the storm. “It’s all very heavy.”Should the damage be
less catastrophic than expected and the roads passable, she hoped to
hold a small in-person gathering on Yom Kippur on Saturday, when the
holy day ends at sundown. If the power is on and it’s safe to return,
she also might do a streamed service from the synagogue Friday
evening.Luna said she is grateful for the “big outpouring of support”
she received from fellow rabbis across the East Coast of Florida, who
were opening their temples for the holidays to evacuees and have
emphasized they can come as they are since few grabbed
“holiday-appropriate clothing” in the rush to escape Milton’s fury. For
the first time in its history, barrier island synagogue skips holding
Yom Kippur services-Hundreds of Jewish families on Longboat Key, a
barrier island off Sarasota Bay, won’t be able to observe Yom Kippur in
their synagogue for the very first time in their 45-year history, said
Shepard Englander, CEO of The Jewish Federation of
Sarasota-Manatee.Access to the island, specifically the John Ringling
Causeway, was closed ahead of the storm. The congregation decided it
wasn’t worth risking Milton’s might for Day of Atonement services. They
had celebrated Rosh Hashanah in their building despite a number of
nearby homes being damaged by Hurricane Helene, which made landfall last
month.Englander said he and his family evacuated from their home on a
riverbank outside Sarasota and were hunkered down at a friend’s home
inland. From there, he was trying to make sure community members from
Longboat Key and other temples that won’t have services can say their
prayers and break their daylong Yom Kippur fast at a newly constructed
conference center in Sarasota with food items like blintzes, bagels,
cream cheese and smoked salmon.Ahead of the storm, people were scattered
in the region at emergency shelters or staying with family or friends,
Englander said“It’s in difficult times that you really understand the
power of community,” he said. “And this is a caring, tight-knit,
generous Jewish community.”
U.S. News-Although Milton has moved
on, at least 6 (10) are dead and millions remain in the dark-By JULIO
CORTEZ, KATE PAYNE and HAVEN DALEY-Updated 7:07 PM EDT, October 10, 2024
ST.
PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Rescue teams plucked Florida residents from the
flotsam of Hurricane Milton on Thursday after the storm smashed through
coastal communities where it tore homes into pieces, filled streets
with mud and spawned a barrage of deadly tornadoes. At least six people
were dead.Arriving just two weeks after the misery wrought by Hurricane
Helene, the system also knocked out power to more than 3 million
customers, flooded barrier islands, tore the roof off a baseball stadium
and toppled a construction crane.Among the most dramatic rescues,
Hillsborough County officers found a a 14-year-old boy floating on a
piece of fence and pulled him onto a boat. A Coast Guard helicopter crew
rescued a man who was left clinging to an ice chest in the Gulf of
Mexico after his fishing boat was stranded in waters roiled by Hurricane
Milton. The agency estimated the man had survived winds of 75 to 90 mph
(121 to 145 kph) and waves up to 25 feet (7.6 meters) high during his
night on the water.“This man survived in a nightmare scenario for even
the most experienced mariner,” Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Dana Grady
said.Despite the destruction, many people expressed relief that Milton
wasn’t worse. The hurricane spared Tampa a direct hit, and the lethal
storm surge that scientists feared never materialized. Here’s what has
made Hurricane Milton so fierce and unusual-The storm tracked to the
south in the final hours and made landfall late Wednesday as a Category 3
hurricane in Siesta Key, about 70 miles (112 kilometers) south of
Tampa. Damage was widespread, and water levels may continue to rise for
days, but Gov. Ron DeSantis said it was not “the worst-case
scenario.”“You face two hurricanes in a couple of weeks — not easy to go
through — but I’ve seen a lot of resilience throughout this state,” the
governor told a briefing in Sarasota. He said he was “very confident
that this area is going to bounce back very, very quickly.”Five people
were killed in tornadoes in the Spanish Lakes Country Club near Fort
Pierce, on Florida’s Atlantic Coast, where homes were destroyed,
authorities said. Police also found a woman dead under a fallen tree
branch.Speaking at a White House briefing, Homeland Security Secretary
Alejandro Mayorkas said there were reports of as many as 10 fatalities
from tornadoes, but he cautioned that the number was tentative. At least
340 individuals and 49 pets have been rescued in ongoing efforts,
DeSantis said Thursday afternoon.South of Tampa, Natasha Shannon and her
husband, Terry, felt lucky to be alive after the hurricane peeled the
tin roof off their cinder block home in Palmetto. They spent the night
in a shelter with their three children and two grandchildren after she
pushed them to leave.“I said, ‘Baby, we got to go. Because we’re not
going to survive this,’” she said. They returned to find the roof torn
into sheets across the street, shredded insulation hanging from exposed
ceiling beams and their belongings soaked.“It ain’t much but it was
ours,” she said. “What little bit we did have is gone.”The worst storm
surge appeared to be in Sarasota County, where it was 8 to 10 feet (2.5
to 3 meters) — lower than in the worst place during Helene. The storm
also dumped up to 18 inches (45 centimeters) of rain in some
areas.Officials in the hard-hit Florida counties of Hillsborough,
Pinellas, Sarasota and Lee urged people to stay home, warning of downed
power lines, trees in roads, blocked bridges and flooding.Among the
dozens of tornadoes was a twister that hit the tiny barrier island of
Matlacha, just off Fort Myers. The fishing-and-tourism village also
endured a surge, with many of the colorful buildings sustaining serious
damage. Tom Reynolds, 90, spent the morning sweeping out 4 feet of mud
and water and collecting chunks of aluminum siding torn off by a twister
that also picked up a car and threw it across the road.Elsewhere on the
island, a house was blown into a street, temporarily blocking it. Some
structures caught fire. Reynolds said he planned to repair the home he
built three decades ago.“What else am I going to do?” he said.In
contrast, city workers on Anna Maria Island were grateful not to be
wading through floodwaters as they picked up debris Thursday morning,
two weeks after Helene battered buildings and blew in piles of sand up
to 6 feet (1.8 m) high. Those piles may have helped shield homes from
further damage, said Jeremi Roberts of the State Emergency Response
Team.“I’m shocked it’s not more,” city worker Kati Sands said as she
cleared the streets of siding and broken lights. “We lost so much with
Helene, there wasn’t much left.”Helene flooded streets and homes in
western Florida and left at least 230 people dead across the South. In
many places along the coast, municipalities raced to collect and dispose
of debris before Milton’s winds and storm surge could toss it around
and compound any damage.Power was knocked out across much of the state.
More than 3.4 million homes and businesses were without electricity,
according to poweroutage.us, which tracks utility reports.Houses lie in

of the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team in St. Petersburg — was ripped to
shreds by fierce winds. Debris littered the field.About 80,000 people
spent the night in shelters, and thousands of others fled after
authorities issued mandatory evacuation orders across 15 Florida
counties with a total population of about 7.2 million people. In Punta
Gorda, a 10-foot surge from the Peace River swept into the historic
district, damaging homes and depositing six boats along one riverside
street. It was the third surge to hit the neighborhood in three
months.Josh Baldwin said he was leaning toward scrapping his 38-foot
boat rather than pay $100,000 to fix it. He couldn’t get insurance
because it was moored in Punta Gorda.“They don’t like to pay out, and
this place always gets ruined in hurricanes,” he said.A half-block away,
information technology workers Kent and Cathy Taylor and their son were
using an SUV attached to a chain to pull waterlogged drywall out of the
bottom floor of their three-story home, which they bought in July. The
lower level is gutted, but the upper floors are still structurally
sound.“It will be beautiful again — it’s just a nick,” Cathy Taylor
said.By Thursday afternoon, Milton was headed into the Atlantic Ocean as
a post-tropical cyclone with winds of 75 mph (120 kph) — just barely
hurricane force.Crossing the bridge from the mainland to Anna Maria
Island early Thursday, Police Chief John Cosby breathed a sigh of
relief. Nearly all residents had evacuated. There were no injuries or
deaths, and the projected storm surge never happened. After fearing that
his police department would be underwater, it remained dry.“It’s nice
to have a place to come back to,” he said.___This version removes an
erroneous reference to 150 tornadoes. Scientists say it’s too early to
know how many tornadoes developed.___Payne and Daley reported from
Palmetto, Florida. Associated Press journalists Holly Ramer and Kathy
McCormack in New Hampshire; Terry Spencer in Matlacha, Florida; Stephany
Matat in Fort Pierce, Florida; Freida Frisaro in Fort Lauderdale;

Gov. Ron -DeSantis gives update on recovery updates after Hurricane
Milton-Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis gave an update on Hurricane Milton
Thursday afternoon after it made landfall the night before as a Category
3 Storm.By Thursday afternoon, the governor said, at least 340
individuals and 49 pets had been rescued. Florida National Guard,
Florida law enforcement, and urban search and rescue teams were
continuing to work through the day. Hundreds of rescuers were engaged in
more than 125 missions in 26 counties.“The northern side of the storm
had a lot of precipitation. They were just getting water dumped on them.
So, whereas [Hurricane] Helene created a lot of storm surge in that
part of the state, this one didn’t do that here, but it create inland
flooding,” DeSantis said.Around 4 million were left without power. As of
the 3 p.m. update, around 880,000 had been restored, with 3.2 million
accounts still without power.DeSantis said that while Hurricane Milton
did inflict damage, “I think in some areas that in terms of what was
being predicted, some of the worst case scenarios did not come to pass,
certainly in terms of some of the storm surge people were
predicting.”Hurricane Milton has exited Florida’s east coast, but major
flooding continues along Hillsborough, Saint John’s and the Little
rivers. Water levels are forecasted to continue rising.“Residents in
these areas should continue to shelter in place until officials deem it
safe to go outside,” Florida Emergency Management Kevin Guthrie
said.Gov. DeSantis warned people against taking advantage of a dire
situation.“I’m warning you, don’t do that. If you loot, you will be held
accountable. If you’re doing things that violate the law, if you’re
gonna try to take advantage of vulnerable people, we’re going to throw
the book at you,” DeSantis said. “We even had some jackass, chain a dog
to a pole. As the storm was coming Florida Highway Patrol rescued the
dog.”

'This is something that
people are seeking and need' One year after Oct. 7, a Yom Kippur ritual
of communal mourning takes on fresh meaning-Leaders try to find ways to
ritualize grief, with some putting out supplements to the usual prayers
that focus on the tragedy and 12 months of conflict with no end in
sight-By Andrew Silow-Carroll Today, 2:23 am-OCT 11,24
JTA — In
2001, Yom Kippur fell on September 26, two weeks after the terror
attacks that brought down the World Trade Center. By then, the major
denominations had already written special prayers to be said during
Yizkor, a prayer service in memory of the dead. The Reform movement
posted a prayer in the style of the liturgy said for Jewish “martyrs”
and Holocaust victims during the traditional service. “Remember all
those who were lost in the terror of that day,” it read. “Grant their
families peace and comfort for Your name’s sake.”Yom Kippur begins this
year on October 11, four days after the first anniversary of the October
7 Hamas massacre in Israel, and once again rabbis and liturgists are
trying to find ways to ritualize raw communal grief on the holy day. A
number of groups have put out supplements to the High Holiday prayer
book, known as the mahzor, containing reflections, prayers and whole
services addressing the mourning and anguish around the day and
subsequent 12 months of a crisis that shows few signs of fading. The
entire cycle of this year’s High Holidays is haunted by October 7,
especially Simhat Torah, the season’s climax: Hamas breached Israel’s
southern fence on the holiday last year, and congregations have been
struggling with how to celebrate what is supposed to be a joyous holiday
on what is essentially the yahrzeit, or death anniversary, of some
1,200 victims of the attack and the anniversary of the abduction of
251.But Yom Kippur too presents challenges after a traumatic year for
Jews. The Yizkor service, said during various holidays throughout the
year, is often seen as an opportunity for people to commune personally
with their own close losses: a parent, a spouse, a child. How do you
balance the personal nature of what is supposed to be a day of
introspection with the communal grief over a devastating attack?Rabbi
Karen Reiss Medwed said she had that balance — others might say
contradiction — in mind when she wrote a “Yizkor for the Victims Of
October 7th” for the Conservative movement.“You never want to overshadow
and make people feel like their personal loss is not being measured in
the context of the communal struggles we have,” said Reiss Medwed, a
teaching professor emerita of Northeastern University. And yet Yizkor,
she added, “is not a static experience. It transforms itself over your
lifetime and across your losses. And it can go from being anything from
intensely dramatic and challenging to something that is a sweet
opportunity to lovingly recall grandparents who passed at a ripe old
age.”Her five-page service includes a call-and-response catalog of
victims of October 7 — including “peace-loving youngsters” and “foreign
workers” — that echoes the “Eleh Ezkerah,” or Martyrology, recited on
Yom Kippur. There is a recitation of the kibbutzim and villages that
were attacked and an adaptation of the traditional “El Maleh Rachamim”
memorial prayer that refers to those who “were cruelly slaughtered on
that fateful Simchat Torah.”Rabbi Joel Pitkowsky of Congregation Beth
Sholom in Teaneck, New Jersey (where, full disclosure, I am a member),
said he will use parts of Reiss Medwed’s liturgy on Yom Kippur.
Pitkowsky also saw a challenge in observing Yom Kippur as a day of
personal introspection and repentance, and acknowledging “where we are
as a Jewish people right now.”“How do I focus on making myself a better
person — all of that work that goes into Yom Kippur,” he said, “and how
do I hold on to the incredible, powerful, meaningful and unbelievably
sad place where we find ourselves in Jewish history?”The answer, he
suggested, is found in the traditional Yom Kippur liturgy itself, where
even personal sins are confessed in the plural, and historical tragedies
are recalled in the Martyrology. “Judaism embraces the creative tension
between the individual and the group,” he said.Rabbi Naomi Levy, who
wrote a Yizkor meditation for October 7, doesn’t see balancing personal
mourning and communal grief over the attacks and the war as a
“challenge.”“It’s a responsibility,” said Levy, who leads the
independent Nashuva congregation in Los Angeles. Mourning October 7 “is
something people are seeking and need.”Services at Nashuva will include
private time for worshipers to remember a loved one, followed by prayers
for the victims of October 7.The prayer she wrote asks God to remember
the victims, and to give strength to those who mourn them. “God of the
broken-hearted, God of the living, God of the dead, send comfort and
strength to the grieving, send hope to the children, send healing to
Israel,” it reads.Other supplements written for the first Yom Kippur
Yizkor since the attacks hit similar notes, with perhaps different
emphasis. Binyamin Holzman’s prayer for the Shalom Hartman Institute’s
Ritual Center includes a reference to the biblical character Job, who
prayed that the earth would not “cover his blood” and let the injustice
of his suffering be forgotten. In a supplement from Svivah, the Jewish
women’s empowerment group, Rabbi Melanie Levav writes that Yizkor is
necessary because it gives words for mourning a tragedy like October 7
for which “there are no words.”At Beth David, a Reform congregation in
Gladwyne, Pennsylvania, a Yom Kippur afternoon “Yizkor/Memorial Service
for 10/7 Victims” will “shift from personal mourning to our communal
mourning.”And some groups will take the rituals of Yizkor to mark
October 7 to make a pointed political statement. A coalition of
left-wing Jewish groups deeply critical of Israel’s prosecution of the
war in Gaza — including Rabbis for Ceasefire, IfNotNow, Jews for Racial
and Economic Justice and the anti-Zionist Jewish Voice for Peace — are
holding “a mass public ritual of remembrance, refusal, and recommitment”
in Brooklyn on Yom Kippur. “This Yom Kippur, let us turn our most holy
of holy days into a mass mourning and collective atonement,” reads the
announcement of the event, called “Yizkor.”Such politicization of Yizkor
will be rare in United States synagogues, however. Rabbi Joel Levenson
of Midway Jewish Center in Syosset, Long Island, is typical of many
rabbis when he said he doesn’t think his congregants are coming to Yom
Kippur services “for the political analysis.”“As a rabbi I am looking to
lead and speak to a congregation of 1,500 and illuminate the power of
Torah, which has spoken to our people over our centuries,” he
said.Levenson is adding an innovation to remember October 7: Yizkor is
also said on Shemini Atzeret, the penultimate holiday in the High
Holiday cycle, and one that coincides with the celebration in Israel of
Simchat Torah. Levenson said his synagogue will hold a special Yizkor
service on the evening before, to emphasize the discord between the
usually joyous holiday and the massacres that took place on it in
2023.“That evening of Shemini Atzeret will be a space for traditional
prayers of Yizkor, but more truly dedicated to a space within a ritual
framework to remember and honor those who lost their lives,” he said. And
for his congregation, the anniversary is both communal and personal:
Omer Neutra, who was taken hostage on October 7 while serving as a tank
commander near Gaza, grew up in the synagogue starting in preschool.
Archaeology-The
taxman cometh: Jerusalem dig shows tribute system after biblical revolt
against Assyria-Remains of buildings and a collection of stamped jar
handles for the first time offer clues to how agricultural produce in
the Jerusalem area was distributed to the empire-By Gavriel Fiske-10
October 2024, 4:12 pm
The Assyrian Empire’s siege of Jerusalem in
701 BCE is mentioned in the Bible, in Assyrian records and later, by
ancient historians such as Herodotus. By scholarly consensus, the siege
is one of the most well-known biblical episodes and is considered to
have definitely, historically occurred. As part of unifying the empire
under its new ruler King Sennacherib, the Assyrians moved to quash
rebellions by states in the region, including the Kingdom of Judah then
ruled by King Hezekiah. According to the biblical account, the Assyrians
ravaged the country surrounding Jerusalem and laid siege to the city,
but his army was disrupted by a plague that caused thousands of deaths
among his troops. Both the Bible and Assyrian records agree that the
Assyrians did not conquer Jerusalem. They returned home after Hezekiah
agreed to continue to pay tribute to the empire while maintaining
nominal independence. Now, recent excavations near the Jerusalem
neighborhood of Arnona have shown, for the first time, clues to how the
Assyrian campaign impacted the economy in the Jerusalem area and how
these Judean tributes were organized, the Israel Antiquities Authority
(IAA) said Wednesday. The dig was undertaken ahead of the construction of
Mordot Arnona, a new neighborhood in southern Jerusalem being built
near Kibbutz Ramat Rachel. The excavation revealed two large 8th-century
BCE agricultural administrative buildings, one destroyed and the other
built on its ruins shortly after, along with 180 ceramic jar handles
engraved with Hebrew inscriptions indicating ownership of the
contents.“We discovered remains of a significant royal administrative
center from the days of King Hezekiah, and perhaps even from the reign
of his father, King Ahaz,” excavation directors Neria Sapir, Natan
Ben-Ari and Benyamin Storchan said in an IAA statement. This center
“functioned in the last third of the 8th century BCE but was destroyed
down to its foundations and buried under a massive heap of stones,” the
archaeologists said. “The stone pile formed a platform upon which a
subsequent structure was erected… Large building stones originating from
the early structure were deliberately incorporated into the heap.”The
destruction of the first and the subsequent construction of the second
is interpreted “as a statement by the Assyrian imperial government
intended to convey a political-diplomatic message to the surrounding
region and make it clear ‘who is really in charge’ by overhauling the
administrative structure and its function,” the archaeologists said.“As
the Assyrians were still interested in the agricultural produce and
taxes Judah could provide, they did allow for the existence of an
independent Judahite administration… but intensified its heavy economic
demands,” the archaeologists said. Both structures were “monumental
public buildings” that were used to consolidate agricultural production
in the area before it was sent to Jerusalem or elsewhere, and the
inscribed jar handles offer a clue as to how this agricultural
production was reorganized after the rebellion, Ben-Ari, a PhD student
at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, told The Times of Israel. In
total, 180 handles were discovered, most of them engraved with a stamp
saying “Belonging to the king.” This was common practice at the time, as
the Kingdom of Judah administered the “concentration and management of
the agricultural produce farmers used to pay taxes to the kingdom,”
produce that was “transported and delivered in large ceramic storage
jars,” the IAA said. However, 17 of the handles were inscribed with
individual names such as Menachem Yubna, Peqach Tavra and Tzophen
Azaryahu. These kinds of handles were only found in the early building
that was destroyed by the Assyrians, Ben-Ari explained. It’s likely that
the disappearance of the handles with private names is “connected to the
rebellion” and the “redistribution of agriculture” that occurred after,
he said. These “private stamp impressions” were probably part of an
administrative system that operated before the Assyrian military
campaign, “as part of the Kingdom of Judah’s preparations, led by King
Hezekiah, to rebel against Assyria, at which time taxation to the
Assyrian Empire ceased,” the archaeologists explained. After the
rebellion, the private impressions disappeared and the general jug
handle impressions “differ from the earlier types and mark the return of
Assyrian taxation” after the campaign, they said.“The amount of these
handles and the names are important, it seems they were government
officials or administrators in senior positions” who were receiving some
of the agricultural production, likely olive oil or wine, which was
then diverted to the Assyrians after the invasion, Ben-Ari said. The jug
handles are currently on display to the public at the Jay and Jeanie
Schottenstein National Campus for the Archaeology of Israel, the IAA’s
newly opened headquarters in Jerusalem. The latest findings are connected
to other recent work in the area, including in Ramat Rachel, Arnona and
Armon Hanatziv, which “has changed the archaeological picture” of the
region by giving deeper insights into how “the Judean Kingdom controlled
the area and the redistribution of products,” Ben-Ari noted.King
Hezekiah ruled the Kingdom of Judah from around 716 to 687 BCE and is
said to have witnessed, in 722 BCE, the Assyrian Empire’s conquest of
the northern Kingdom of Israel and subsequent consolidation of the
empire’s control of the region. At the time, the Assyrians were a major
empire, the equivalent of a superpower that controlled areas from what
is now Iran to Egypt. The Kingdom of Judah was one of several much
smaller states that paid tribute to the empire in exchange for
autonomy.Portrayed as a righteous religious reformer in the Bible,
Hezekiah, after joining regional efforts to contest Assyrian control
after a regime change in the empire, stopped paying the required tribute
and then faced an invasion. Several archaeological discoveries in
Jerusalem, especially the Broad Wall, or Hezekiah’s Wall, have been
understood as part of the king’s preparations for an Assyrian siege,
although recent research has called into question the chronology of the
wall’s construction. In 2021, a team of Israeli and US researchers
published an investigation into the Assyrian siege and destruction of
Lachish, which also took place in 701 BCE during the conflict. Lachish
at the time was the second-largest city in Judah. The efficient Assyrian
army constructed a huge stone siege ramp to access the fortified
hilltop city and breached the gate in just a few weeks, the researchers
said.
WARN THE PEOPLE-WW3
EZEKIEL 33:1-6
1 Again the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
2
Son of man, speak to the children of thy people, and say unto them,
When I bring the sword upon a land, if the people of the land take a man
of their coasts, and set him for their watchman:
3 If when he seeth the sword come upon the land, he blow the trumpet, and warn the people;
4
Then whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet, and taketh not
warning; if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be upon
his own head.
5 He heard the sound of the trumpet, and took not
warning; his blood shall be upon him. But he that taketh warning shall
deliver his soul.
6 But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow
not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and
take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but
his blood will I require at the watchman’s hand.

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the

EZEKIEL 31:10-17
10
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast lifted up thyself
in height, and he hath shot up his top among the thick boughs, and his
heart is lifted up in his height;
11 I have therefore delivered him
into the hand of the mighty one of the heathen; he shall surely deal
with him: I have driven him out for his wickedness.
12 And
strangers, the terrible of the nations, have cut him off, and have left
him: upon the mountains and in all the valleys his branches are fallen,
and his boughs are broken by all the rivers of the land; and all the
people of the earth are gone down from his shadow, and have left him.
13 Upon his ruin shall all the fowls of the heaven remain, and all the beasts of the field shall be upon his branches:
14To
the end that none of all the trees by the waters exalt themselves for
their height, neither shoot up their top among the thick boughs, neither
their trees stand up in their height, all that drink water: for they
are all delivered unto death, to the nether parts of the earth, in the
midst of the children of men, with them that go down to the pit.(HELL).
15Thus
saith the Lord GOD; In the day when he went down to the grave I caused a
mourning: I covered the deep for him, and I restrained the floods
thereof, and the great waters were stayed: and I caused Lebanon to mourn
for him, and all the trees of the field fainted for him.
16 I made
the nations to shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him down to
hell with them that descend into the pit: and all the trees of Eden, the
choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, shall be comforted in
the nether parts of the earth.
17They also went down into hell with
him unto [them that be] slain with the sword; and [they that were] his
arm, [that] dwelt under his shadow in the midst of the heathen.
18To
whom art thou thus like in glory and in greatness among the trees of
Eden? yet shalt thou be brought down with the trees of Eden unto the
nether parts of the earth: thou shalt lie in the midst of the
uncircumcised with [them that be] slain by the sword. This [is] Pharaoh
and all his multitude, saith the Lord GOD.
EZEKIEL 32:17-32
17
It came to pass also in the twelfth year, in the fifteenth [day] of the

18 Son of

25 They
have set her a bed in the midst of the slain with all her multitude: her

have they borne their shame with them that go down to the pit: he is put

are gone down to hell with their weapons of war: and they have laid
their swords under their heads, but their iniquities shall be upon their
bones, though [they were] the terror of the mighty in the land of the

28 Yea, thou shalt be broken in the midst of the uncircumcised, and shalt lie with [them that are] slain with the sword.
29

31 Pharaoh shall see them, and shall be comforted over all
his multitude, [even] Pharaoh and all his army slain by the sword, saith

32 For I have caused my terror in the land of the

angel raise the sickle and come down on all the Middle East countries. I
saw Iran, Persia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, all of Georgia - Iraq, Syria,
Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, all of Asia Minor - full of blood. I saw blood
all over these countries. And I saw fire; Nuclear weapons used in many
of those countries. Smoke rising from everywhere. Sudden destruction –
men destroying one another. I heard these words:"Israel, Oh Israel, the
great judgment has come." The angel said, "The chosen, the church, the
remnant, shall be purified. The Spirit of God shall prepare the children
of God."I saw fires rising to heaven. The angel said: "This is the final
judgment. My church shall be purified, protected and ready for the
final day. Men will die from thirst. Water shall be scarce all over the
Middle East. Rivers shall dry up, and men will fight for water in those
countries."The angel showed me that the United Nations shall be broken
in pieces because of the crisis in the Middle East. There shall be no

Gulf countries lobbying US to
prevent Israeli strike on Iran’s oil facilities-Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar
refusing to let Jerusalem use their airspace for response to Tehran’s
ballistic missile attack, fearing Iran could take aim at their own
energy sites-By Samia Nakhoul, Parisa Hafezi and Pesha Magid Today, 5:32
pm-OCT 10,24
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (Reuters) — Gulf states
are lobbying Washington to stop Israel from attacking Iran’s oil sites
because they are concerned their own oil facilities could come under
fire from Tehran’s proxies if the conflict escalates, three Gulf sources
told Reuters. As part of their attempts to avoid being caught in the
crossfire, Gulf states including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates,
and Qatar are also refusing to let Israel fly over their airspace for
any attack on Iran and have conveyed this to Washington, the three
sources close to government circles said.Israel has promised Iran will
pay for its ballistic missile attack last week while Tehran has said any
retaliation would be met with vast destruction, raising fears of a
wider war in the region that could suck in the United States. The moves
by the Gulf states come after a diplomatic push by non-Arab Shiite Iran
to persuade its Sunni Gulf neighbors to use their influence with
Washington amid rising concerns Israel could target Iran’s oil
production facilities.During meetings this week, Iran warned Saudi
Arabia it could not guarantee the safety of the Gulf kingdom’s oil
facilities if Israel were given any assistance in carrying out an
attack, a senior Iranian official and an Iranian diplomat told
Reuters.Ali Shihabi, a Saudi analyst close to the Saudi royal court,
said: “The Iranians have stated: ‘If the Gulf states open up their
airspace to Israel, that would be an act of war.'”The diplomat said
Tehran had sent a clear message to Riyadh that its allies in countries
such as Iraq or Yemen might respond if there was any regional support
for Israel against Iran.A potential Israeli strike was the focus of
talks on Wednesday between Saudi de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed
bin Salman, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who was on a
Gulf tour to rally support, Gulf and Iranian sources said. The Iranian
minister’s visit, along with Saudi-American communications at the
defense ministry level, are part of a coordinated effort to address the
crisis, a Gulf source close to government circles told Reuters.A person
in Washington familiar with the discussions confirmed that Gulf
officials had been in touch with US counterparts to express concern
about the potential scope of Israel’s expected retaliation. The White
House declined to comment when asked whether Gulf governments had asked
Washington to ensure Israel’s response was measured. US President Joe
Biden and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke on Wednesday about the
Israeli retaliation in a call both sides described as positive.Jonathan
Panikoff, former deputy US national intelligence officer on the Middle
East and now at the Atlantic Council think tank in Washington said:
“Gulf states’ anxiety is likely to be a key talking point with Israeli
counterparts in trying to convince Israel to undertake a carefully
calibrated response.”Oil at risk-The Organization of Petroleum Exporting
Countries, OPEC, which is de facto led by Saudi Arabia, has enough
spare oil capacity to make up for any loss of Iranian supply if an
Israeli retaliation knocked out some of the country’s facilities. But
much of that spare capacity is in the Gulf region so if oil facilities
in Saudi Arabia or the UAE, for example, were targeted too, the world
could face an oil supply problem.Saudi Arabia has been wary of an
Iranian strike on its oil plants since a 2019 attack on its Aramco
oilfield shut down over 5 percent of global oil supply. Iran denied
involvement.Riyadh has had a rapprochement with Tehran in recent years,
but trust remains an issue. Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and
the UAE all host US military facilities or troops.Concerns over oil
facilities and the potential for a wider regional conflict were also
central to talks between Emirati officials and their US counterparts,
said another Gulf source. In 2022, the Iran-aligned Houthis in Yemen
fired missiles and drones at oil refueling trucks near an oil refinery
owned by UAE’s state oil firm ADNOC and claimed the attack.“The Gulf
states aren’t letting Israel use their airspace. They won’t allow
Israeli missiles to pass through, and there’s also a hope that they
won’t strike the oil facilities,” the Gulf source said. The three Gulf
sources emphasized that Israel could route strikes through Jordan or
Iraq, but using Saudi, UAE, or Qatari airspace was off the table and
strategically unnecessary.Analysts also pointed out that Israel has
other options, including mid-air refueling capabilities that would
enable its jets to fly down the Red Sea into the Indian Ocean, proceed
to the Gulf, and then fly back.‘Middle of a missile war’According to two
senior Israeli officials, Israel is going to calibrate its response
and, as of Wednesday, it had not yet decided whether it would strike
Iran’s oilfields. The option was one of a number presented by the defense
establishment to Israeli leaders, according to the officials.Defense
Minister Yoav Gallant said on Wednesday: “Our strike will be lethal,
precise, and above all — surprising. They will not understand what
happened and how it happened. They will see the results.”The three Gulf
sources stated that Saudi Arabia, as a leading oil exporter along with
oil-producing neighbors — the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, and Bahrain —
had keen a interest in de-escalating the situation.“We will be in the
middle of a missile war. There is serious concern, especially if the
Israeli strike targets Iran’s oil installations,” a second Gulf source
said. The three Gulf sources said an Israeli strike on Iran’s oil
infrastructure would have a global impact, particularly for China —
Iran’s top oil customer — as well as for Kamala Harris ahead of the
November 5 presidential election in which she is running against Donald
Trump.“If oil prices surge to $120 per barrel, it would harm both the US
economy and Harris’s chances in the election. So they (Americans) won’t
allow the oil war to expand,” the first Gulf source said.Gulf sources
said safeguarding all oil installations remained a challenge, despite
having advanced missile and Patriot defense systems, so the primary
approach remained diplomatic: signaling to Iran that Gulf states pose no
threat.Bernard Haykel, professor of Near East Studies at Princeton
University, noted that Riyadh was vulnerable “because the Iranians can
swarm those installations given the short distance from the mainland.”

Houthis attack chemical tanker in Red Sea; no injuries or fire
reported-Yemen rebels claim they fired multiple ballistic missiles at
Liberian-flagged Olympic Spirit; one projectile hits ship, causing some
damage, as at least three more fall into water-By AP Today, 11:42 pm-OCT

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Yemen’s Houthi rebels
attacked a Liberian-flagged chemical tanker on Thursday in the Red Sea,
authorities said. The attack comes as the rebels continue to threaten
ships moving through the Red Sea, a waterway that once saw $1 trillion
in goods move through it a year, over the ongoing conflicts in the
Mideast stemming from the Gaza war, which began when Hamas attacked
Israel on October 7, 2023.The Olympic Spirit tanker in the Red Sea had
been skirting the coast of East Africa when it found itself struck first
by a projectile that damaged the vessel, but sparked no fire and caused
no injuries, the British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade
Operations center said.At least three more projectiles later fell in the
waters around the vessel, which was a distance away from Hodeida, the
Houthi-controlled port from which many of the rebels’ attacks have been
launched.Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree, a Houthi military spokesman, claimed
the attack on the Olympic Spirit in a prerecorded video message aired
Thursday night. He claimed the rebels launched multiple ballistic
missiles targeting the tanker. The Houthis have targeted more than 80
merchant vessels with missiles and drones since the war in Gaza started
with Hamas’s attack last October. They seized one vessel and sank two in
the campaign that also killed four sailors. Other missiles and drones
have either been intercepted by a US-led coalition in the Red Sea or
failed to reach their targets, which have included Western military
vessels as well. #Yemen @UK_MTO reports that #Houthis targeted the
Chemical Tanker Olympic Spirit, en route from Egypt's Port Said to
Muscat, Oman, with an unidentified projectile. Three projectiles missed
the vessel. No claims from @army21ye. https://t.co/dlSPRZtkex

2024-The rebels maintain that they target ships linked to Israel, the
United States, or the United Kingdom to force an end to Israel’s
campaign against the Hamas terror group in Gaza. However, many of the
ships attacked have little or no connection to the conflict, including
some bound for Iran. The Houthis also continue to launch missiles
targeting Israel, drawing retaliatory airstrikes from the Israelis late
last month that targeted Houthi infrastructure in western Yemen. In
Thursday’s attack, the private security firm Ambrey said it “assessed
the vessel to have a strong affiliation with the Houthi targeting
profile,” without elaborating.Times of Israel staff contributed to this

‘Serve the nation, kill a Jew’ graffitied on prominent
Buenos Aires monument-Antisemitic slogan, which has long history on
Argentina’s far right, written on monument to independence hero Simon
Bolivar days after Oct. 7 anniversary-By Juan Melamed Today, 9:36 pm-OCT

JTA — An antisemitic slogan with a long history in
Argentina was discovered graffitied onto a monument in a Buenos Aires
park on Wednesday, unnerving local Jews. The graffiti, reading “Serve the
nation, kill a Jew,” was inked onto a column of a monument to Simon
Bolivar, historically considered “the Liberator” of South America, in
Parque Rivadavia in the Argentine capital. A Jewish star stood in for
the final word of the slogan.Argentina’s leading Jewish organization,
known as DAIA, filed an official complaint, and the municipality swiftly
cleaned up the graffiti in the afternoon, shortly after it was
discovered.DAIA condemned the “serious antisemitic graffiti” and said it
was one of more than 500 antisemitic incidents the organization had
recorded this year, amid a spike following Hamas’s October 7, 2023
attack on Israel.Argentina has a Jewish population of nearly 200,000,
the largest in Latin America. The vast majority live in the Buenos Aires
area.“Today Parque Rivadavia woke up like this,” Federico Ballan, the
president of the district that includes the park, wrote on social media
as he shared a picture of the graffiti.La DAIA manifiesta su

DAIA (@DAIAArgentina) October 9, 2024“We are already working to clean it
up. The complaint has already been filed and we are going to do
everything in our power to identify these criminals,” Ballan said.A
close variant of the phrase has a long history on the country’s far
right. The Nationalist Liberation Alliance, a World War II-era Argentine
movement affiliated with the Nazis, used the phrase, and it was later
employed by Tacura, a fascist movement that was active in Argentina in
the decades following the war.It has appeared more recently as well. A
decade ago, residents in the town of General Paz received tax bills with
the phrase written on them. The city official responsible for the
printing was ultimately sentenced to a suspended jail term and was
ordered to apologize and learn about the Holocaust. The graffiti was
discovered the same week that Jews in Buenos Aires marked the first
anniversary of Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel last year. An event
organized by the country’s largest Jewish organizations drew 15,000
attendees, according to the country’s Israeli embassy. There was a
pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel demonstration in the city the same
day.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.
3 reserve
soldiers killed in northern Gaza as IDF presses offensive in
Jabaliya-Palestinian Red Crescent reports 28 killed in strike on Hamas
command post at former school; military says Hamas commanders who took
part in Oct. 7 targeted in Wednesday airstrike-By ToI Staff Today, 8:38
pmUpdated at 9:31 pm-OCT 10,24
The Israel Defense Forces said
Thursday that three reserve soldiers were killed amid fighting in the
northern Gaza Strip, where the military launched a fresh ground
offensive this week to prevent Hamas from reestablishing itself in the
area. The three, all soldiers in the 5460th support unit of the 460th
Brigade, were named as:Master Sgt. (res.) Ori Moshe Borenstein, 32, from
Moreshet.Maj. (res.) Netanel Hershkovitz, 37, from Jerusalem.Master
Sgt. (res.) Tzvi Matityahu Marantz, 32, from Bnei Adam.Their deaths
bring the number of Israeli troops killed in the ground offensive in
Gaza to 353.The announcement came as the IDF said troops were pressing
ahead with the operation in northern Gaza’s Jabaliya, where according to
a military statement they killed dozens of terror operatives over the
previous 24 hours. The statement said troops captured weapons including
rifles, RPG launchers, and ammunition. The update came a day after the
IDF carried out a strike on a-command and-control complex in Jabaliya
that“eliminated at least twelve terrorists, some of whom took part in
the murderous terror attack against the residents of the Gaza border
communities on October 7” last year, according to a joint statement
Thursday from the military and Shin Bet security service. The statement
named twelve men, identifying them as terror operatives who were
affiliated with either Hamas or Palestinian Islamic Jihad.“Large
quantities of weapons were stored inside the command and control center,
and it was used by the terrorists to plan and execute terror attacks
against IDF troops and the citizens of the State of Israel,” the joint
statement said, adding that the site previously served as a medical
compound. Those killed also included a platoon commander in Hamas’s
military intelligence unit, a deputy platoon commander in a Hamas
anti-tank unit, two platoon commanders in Hamas’s elite Nukhba force and
a Hamas engineering operative, the statement said. The IDF said it took
steps to mitigate civilian harm ahead of the strike. On Thursday, the
military struck another alleged Hamas command post at a
school-turned-shelter in central Gaza’s Deir Al-Balah.The Palestinian
Red Crescent said the strike on the Rufaida school complex killed 28
people and wounded 54 others, without differentiating between civilians
and combatants.“Prior to the strike, numerous steps were taken to
mitigate the risk of harming civilians, including the use of precise
munitions, aerial surveillance, and additional intelligence,” the
military said in a statement.Israel also noted that Hamas and other
terror groups have routinely used schools, shelters and other protected
facilities for their operations, with the civilians there serving as
human shields. The IDF vowed to continue striking terror operatives
wherever they are, while making efforts to minimize harm to nearby
civilians.Witnesses quoted by The Associated Press said the strike
occurred while school managers were meeting with representatives of an
aid group in a room normally used by Hamas-run police who provide
security. They said there were no police in the room at the time. The
Palestinian branch of Terre des Hommes, a Swiss aid group, said in a
statement that members of one of its children’s health teams were killed
in the strike, though it did not specify how many.According to the
military, troops eliminated numerous gunmen, uncovered weapons and
demolished military infrastructure in ground operations in central Gaza
on Thursday. In southern Gaza’s Rafah, forces located and destroyed
rocket launchers, weaponry, and underground tunnel shafts used by terror
operatives, the IDF said. Also Thursday, a small drone was launched from
the Gaza Strip toward Israel and downed by the IDF as it crossed the
border, the military said. No one was hurt in the incident.Along with
the ground operations, the Israeli Air Force hit around 30 Hamas targets
in Gaza over the past day, according to the military, which said the
strikes targeted terror cells, weapon stockpiles, launchers, buildings,
underground infrastructure and other assets of terror groups.Meanwhile,
the UN children’s agency announced Thursday that Israel had agreed to
“humanitarian pauses” in specific areas of Gaza to facilitate a second
round of polio vaccinations for some 590,000 children under the age of
10. Israel has yet to comment on the announcement. The fighting came
after the the United States said Wednesday that it believes Hamas leader
Yahya Sinwar is alive and likely hiding in an underground Gaza tunnel
with hostages in his vicinity.“Yahya Sinwar remains the decision maker.
He remains — we believe — alive and in a tunnel underneath Gaza, holding
hostages, and likely with hostages in his vicinity,” said White House
Mideast czar Brett McGurk, during a High Holiday call with American
rabbis. The terror leader, who had dropped out of contact, was said in
controversial reporting this week to have gotten back in touch with
Qatari mediators of a potential hostage-ceasefire deal — saying he wants
“immunity” from a potential targeted strike during the talks, according
to Channel 12.It is believed that 97 of the 251 hostages abducted by
Hamas on October 7 remain in Gaza, including the bodies of at least 34
confirmed dead by the IDF.Hamas released 105 civilians during a weeklong
truce in late November, and four hostages were released before that.
Eight hostages have been rescued by troops alive, and the bodies of 37
hostages have also been recovered, including three mistakenly killed by
the military as they tried to escape their captors.Hamas is also holding
two Israeli civilians who entered the Strip in 2014 and 2015, as well
as the bodies of two IDF soldiers who were killed in 2014.Agencies

hostages-By Agencies and ToI Staff Today, 8:22 pm-OCT 10,24
GENEVA
– A United Nations inquiry claimed Israel has carried out a concerted
policy of destroying Gaza’s healthcare system in the ongoing war with
Hamas, actions amounting to both war crimes and the crime against
humanity of extermination.A statement Thursday by ex-UN High
Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay released ahead of a full
report accused Israel of “relentless and deliberate attacks on medical
personnel and facilities” in the war, triggered by the Hamas terror
group’s massacres in southern Israel on October 7, 2023.“Children in
particular have borne the brunt of these attacks, suffering both
directly and indirectly from the collapse of the health system,” said
Pillay, whose report will be presented to the UN General Assembly on
October 30.Israel has said that while it seeks to avoid civilian
fatalities in its fight against Hamas, the Gaza terror group is deeply
embedded within the civilian population, and operates from the cover of
built-up populated areas including private homes, schools and
hospitals.Captured terrorists have confirmed the claims, explaining that
Hamas believes Israel will not target them if they hide inside medical
facilities. The UN inquiry’s statement also accused Israeli forces of
deliberately killing and torturing medical personnel and targeting
medical vehicles — something which Israel has consistently denied
doing. As an example, it cited the death of a Palestinian girl, Hind
Rajab, in February along with family members and two medics who came to
rescue her, which was blamed on Israel by the Palestinian Red Crescent
Society. The IDF said that an initial investigation into the death of the
six-year-old suggested that no troops had been in the area at the time.
The case was then handed off to the General Staff Fact-Finding
Assessment Mechanism, an independent military body responsible for
investigating unusual incidents amid the war.The UN inquiry further
accused Israel of restricting permits for patients to leave the war-torn
Gaza Strip.Following the October 7 terror onslaught, in which some
1,200 people were killed and 251 were seized as hostages, Israel closed
the heavily damaged Erez Crossing, which prior to the war had served as a
medical corridor for sick Gazans in need of treatment. While it has
since reopened for the delivery of aid to the enclave, along with the
Kerem Shalom border crossing, it has not reopened for individual
use.Throughout the first months of the war, close to 5,000 sick and
injured Gazans were able to evacuate via the Rafah Crossing on the
Gaza-Egypt border. But the crossing was shuttered in May after the IDF
launched an offensive in the southernmost Gaza city, as Egypt said it
refused to reopen its side of the crossing until the Gaza side is
returned to Palestinian control. The World Health Organization has said
that over 10,000 patients requiring urgent medical evacuation have been
prevented from leaving Gaza since then.Medical evacuations have
nevertheless continued to take place — albeit in a limited and irregular
fashion — and in September, the WHO evacuated nearly 100 people,
including dozens of children, fromConflating the treatment of
Palestinian security detainees in Israel and the 101 hostages held by
Hamas terrorists in Gaza, the UN statement said that its investigation
found both sides to have been involved in carrying out torture and
sexual violence.Hamas has prevented the International Committee of the
Red Cross from visiting the hostages in Gaza since their abduction, and
the Red Cross has in turn said that unless the terror group changes its
stance, it cannot access them independently. In the wake of October 7,
Israel banned the Red Cross from visiting Palestinian prisoners in
Israeli facilities without offering an explanation as to why, or an
alternative option. In addition, numerous reports have emerged of abuse
by Israeli officials against Palestinian detainees at the Sde Teiman
detention facility close to Beersheba. However, dozens of investigations
are being conducted into the allegations. So far, one soldier has been
indicted for abusing detainees at the facility, while another five are
under investigation for the alleged violent sexual abuse of a detainee.
In addition, the High Court of Justice ordered the government in August
to explain why it shouldn’t declare the ban on Red Cross visits to be
illegal. The Commission of Inquiry (COI) has a broad mandate to collect
evidence and identify suspected perpetrators of international crimes
committed in Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. It bases its
findings on a range of sources including interviews with victims and
witnesses, submissions and satellite imagery. The COI has previously
alleged that both Israel and Hamas committed war crimes in the early
stages of the Gaza war and that Israel’s actions also constituted crimes
against humanity because of the immense civilian losses cited by the
Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza. The term is reserved for the most
serious international crimes knowingly committed as part of a widespread
or systematic attack against civilians. The Hamas-controlled Gaza health
ministry has said that since the outbreak of war, more than 42,000
people have been killed or are presumed dead in the fighting, though the
toll cannot be verified and does not differentiate between civilians
and fighters.Israel says it has killed some 17,000 combatants in battle
as of August and another 1,000 terrorists inside Israel on October
7.Israel has not cooperated with the inquiry, which it says has an
anti-Israel bias. The COI has accused Israel of obstructing its work and
preventing investigators from accessing both Israel and the Palestinian
territories.Sometimes, the evidence gathered by such UN-mandated bodies
has formed the basis for war crimes prosecutions and could be drawn on
by the International Criminal Court.Jeremy Sharon contributed to this
report.
Finally on the offensive, IDF’s 91st Division slices
through Hezbollah’s front lines-Reservists sustain casualties during
second week of ground offensive, but assert control over Lebanon border
area and Radwan weapons caches-By Lazar Berman-Today, 7:00 pm-OCT 10,24
Little
more than a year ago, Israel faced a dilemma on its northern border,
beyond the hovering threat that had occupied its defense leaders for the
previous two decades. The Lebanese terror group Hezbollah had erected
two tents inside of Israeli territory, which Israel was determined to
see removed. But it was equally determined to avoid a war with Hezbollah,
which — Israel assumed — would rain thousands of rockets down on the
country every day. Israel was as deterred as it hoped the powerful
Iran-backed army was.The tents remained for months, as Israel rather
flaccidly sent a message to Hezbollah through UN peacekeepers asking
them to remove the structures. Some officials in Israel pushed for the
use of force, but in the end, diplomatic moves combined with vague
verbal threats seemed to finally convince Hezbollah to pull back. Now,
after Hamas’s October 7 attacks — and a year of rocket and anti-tank
missile fire from Hezbollah, Israel’s mood has changed dramatically, as
has the balance of power. Ten days into the IDF ground operation in
Lebanon, it’s hard to fathom that Israel recently treated Hezbollah as
an adversary that it needs to tiptoe around. On Thursday, the IDF for the
first time brought Israeli journalists into a village in southern
Lebanon, a clear indication that it feels it has asserted operational
control over the area.Other signs of the new reality abound. Israel has
cut a series of openings into the border fence for IDF vehicles to cross
into Lebanon, and the gaps are now entirely unguarded. It brought the
journalists into enemy territory in open Hummers, with no fear of
snipers or mines. And the reserve soldiers from the 8207th Battalion of
the 91st Division’s “Alon” Brigade who were stationed inside the Shi’a
village seemed relaxed and happy, eager to pose for pictures or
lightheartedly berate the journalists for spreading negativity.Hezbollah
certainly has some fight left. A soldier from the battalion was
seriously hurt Wednesday, and eight were lightly hurt the day before.
The IDF announced this morning that Sgt. Maj. (res.) Ronny Ganizate of
the Alon Brigade’s 5030th Battalion was killed and another reservist
seriously hurt. But it’s far from the organized, highly professional
defense that many expected. Soldiers said they faced uncoordinated
attacks by small cells, which are inevitably eliminated. Soldiers in
another brigade told The Times of Israel that the remaining Hezbollah
fighters in their sector are mostly dispirited, though they mount the
periodic ambush.Much of the degradation of Hezbollah’s forces along the
border was achieved over the last year, as the IDF used artillery and
airstrikes to target enemy positions in nearby Lebanese villages. The
IDF also carried out dozens of quiet raids to further reduce Hezbollah’s
capabilities.Under pressure, the elite Radwan force that was trained to
invade northern Israel pulled away from the border. And in recent weeks,
Israel has revved up its fight against Hezbollah into another gear.
With cold-blooded creativity, a relentless series of IDF (and likely
Mossad) attacks ravaged the terror group’s senior leadership and reduced
its rocket arsenal.Driving along the border with Lebanon now, the fence
that was designed to slow Hezbollah down in the event of an attempted
invasion seems nothing less than pathetic, a rusty testament to how
badly Israel underestimated its adversaries until 6:29 a.m. on October
7. The barbed wire coils and the blue UN barrels warning against
crossing the demarcation line would have done nothing to slow thousands
of Radwan fighters from pouring across into the kibbutzim and army bases
nearby.IDF soldiers in Lebanon have uncovered Hezbollah preparations
for that very scenario.“This village is a fortified position,” said Alon
Brigade commander Col. Yaniv Malka, standing inside what was a small,
one-story structure. “There is not a single building in all this
village, unfortunately, where we didn’t find some kind of munition or
piece of intelligence.”That house held well-maintained military
equipment for two Hezbollah fighters, including a stash of rockets. In a
nearby field, troops found launchers aimed at the Israeli border
community of Avivim.“All the buildings around it are just like this, but
on steroids,” said Malka. On Tuesday night, Battalion 8207 found a much
larger cache in a house a hundred yards away. They were ambushed as they
took the house, resulting in eight wounded. The house had three rooms
packed with mortar shells, Kalashnikov rifles, RPGs, hand grenades, rain
suits and Kevlar vests. A Dragunov sniper rifle and PK machine gun lay
in cases in one of the rooms, which is now missing its back wall.“An
operative comes south in jeans and sandals,” said 91st Division
commander Brig. Gen. Shai Klepper, “reaches here, gets equipment, gets a
map, gets the plan that he had prepared for, and knows how to
invade.”The preparation was meticulous. His soldiers found notebooks
detailing regular inspections of the sites by Hezbollah officials going
back five years. After nearly a year of playing defense — “like a caged
lion,” in the words of one officer — the 91st Division is finally on the
offensive, using the full spectrum of its capabilities and putting its
plans into motion. And it is determined to make sure Hezbollah’s years
of preparation go to waste.“We will destroy every house that had
munitions in them,” said Malka. “Period. We live not leave two stones on
top of each other in any house that weapons were in.”“We are taking
away Hezbollah’s ability to fire at northern Israel.”
Trump Org
said looking to resume talks for Israel hotel properties when war is
over-GOP candidate’s son Eric Trump tells NY Times that discussions
halted after Oct. 7 out of respect, but business partners say pause due
to ethics concern amid his father’s campaign-By ToI Staff Today, 5:51
pm-OCT 10,24
The Trump Organization is looking to resume
negotiations for new hotel properties in Israel, raising possible
ethical concerns as Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump seeks a
second term in the White House, the New York Times reported
Wednesday.According to the report, Eric Trump, the former US president’s
son who runs the family business, sought to open hotels in Jerusalem
and Tel Aviv, pursuing the projects well after his father was already a
candidate in the upcoming American election. Two Florida businessmen, who
the US newspaper described as past political supporters of Trump, were
looking to partner with the Trump Organization to lease two hotels owned
by Israeli real estate company Nitsba Group, which would license the
Trump name and manage the hotels. The developers had their eyes on the
Haleom Hotel, a Jerusalem development that has been in construction for
years, and on the Sarona Hotel in Tel Aviv. Eric Trump also reportedly
toured the famous Princess Hotel in Eilat, but passed on the property.A
deal with Nitsba was almost finalized, but talks were suspended last
year in the wake of Hamas’s October 7 massacre in Israel, which started
the ongoing war, those involved told the Times.“The deal absolutely
would have gotten done if not for Oct. 7,” Eric Trump said. He explained
that finalizing the deal as the war broke out “would have seemed
trivial and tone-deaf in light of the horrific things that the country
and region were experiencing,” but said the company would “definitely”
close on the deal once the war is over.According to the report, however,
the talks came to a halt weeks before the Hamas attack, due to ethical
concerns regarding Trump’s presidential campaign.Lockwood, the real
estate firm of the Florida businessmen, confirmed to the Times that the
negotiations were canceled due to “an ethical issue that had to do with
Donald J. Trump as he was getting closer to being considered the
Republican nominee.”In August, however, Lockwood reached out to a Nitsba
executive, saying Eric Trump wants to resume talks “when the timing
becomes right.”The company has also pursued other deals amid Trump’s
presidential campaign, the Times noted, including plans for towers in
Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, and a hotel and golf project
in Vietnam. It’s unclear what ethics guidelines Trump intends to commit
to if he is elected again next month. During his first term, the
billionaire put a stop to international deals, hired an ethics adviser
and paid the US Treasury annual compensation for profits from foreign
officials who stayed at Trump hotels, the Times report noted. At the same
time, then-president Trump was also accused of not doing enough to
sever his business connections, including by some who invoked the US
Constitution’s Emoluments Clause forbidding gifts from foreign
governments.“The first time we did everything imaginable to avoid any
appearance of impropriety, and frankly, we got crushed anyway,” Eric
Trump said. This time, he said, “We can’t just sit out in perpetuity, and
I won’t.”
Afghan National Arrested for Plotting an Election Day
Terrorist Attack in the Name of ISIS-Tuesday, October 8, 2024-Office of
Public Affairs
The Justice Department today announced charges
against a citizen of Afghanistan residing in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma,
for conspiring to conduct an Election Day terrorist attack in the United
States on behalf of the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), a
designated foreign terrorist organization (FTO).According to a criminal
complaint filed today, Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, 27, conspired and attempted
to provide material support to ISIS and obtained firearms and ammunition
to conduct a violent attack on U.S. soil in the name of ISIS. As part
of the plot, the defendant allegedly took steps to liquidate his
family’s assets, resettle members of his family overseas, acquire AK-47
assault rifles and ammunition, and commit a terrorist attack in the
United States.“As charged, the Justice Department foiled the defendant’s
plot to acquire semi-automatic weapons and commit a violent attack in
the name of ISIS on U.S. soil on Election Day,” said Attorney General
Merrick B. Garland. “We will continue to combat the ongoing threat that
ISIS and its supporters pose to America’s national security, and we will
identify, investigate, and prosecute the individuals who seek to
terrorize the American people. I am deeply grateful to the public
servants of the FBI, National Security Division, and U.S. Attorney’s
Office for the Western District of Oklahoma for their work to disrupt
this attack and for the work they do every day to protect our
country.”“This defendant, motivated by ISIS, allegedly conspired to
commit a violent attack, on Election Day, here on our homeland," said
FBI Director Christopher Wray. "I am proud of the men and women of the
FBI who uncovered and stopped the plot before anyone was harmed.
Terrorism is still the FBI's number one priority, and we will use every
resource to protect the American people."“Thanks to the relentless
efforts of the FBI, National Security Division’s Counterterrorism
Section, and federal prosecutors in my office, the alleged plan to
commit an attack on Election Day was disrupted and Mr. Tawhedi was
arrested,” said U.S. Attorney Robert J. Troester for the Western
District of Oklahoma. “Fighting terrorism remains the top priority of
the Justice Department. We will continue to pursue, disrupt, and hold
accountable those who plot to commit acts of terrorism against our
country and our people.”According to the criminal complaint, as part of
the investigation into Tawhedi, the FBI searched Tawhedi’s phone and
obtained communications between Tawhedi and a person who facilitated
recruitment, training, and indoctrination of persons who expressed
interest in terrorist activity and who Tawhedi understood to be
affiliated with ISIS. Tawhedi was also seen in a video recorded on July
20 reading to two children text that describes the rewards a martyr
receives in the afterlife. Tawhedi also allegedly accessed, viewed, and
saved ISIS propaganda on his iCloud and Google account, participated in
pro-ISIS Telegram groups, and contributed to a charity which fronts for
and funnels money to ISIS.The complaint alleges that while liquidating
their family’s assets prior to the attack, Tawhedi and his
co-conspirator, who is a juvenile, advertised the sale of the family’s
personal property on Facebook. At the FBI’s direction, a confidential
human source responded to inquire if a computer was still for sale. The
FBI source noted that he needed the computer for a new gun business he
was starting, which ultimately led Tawhedi and the juvenile to meet with
the source and other FBI assets at a rural location to test firearms.
Tawhedi expressed interest in purchasing two AK-47 assault rifles,
magazines, and ammunition from the source.According to the criminal
complaint, on Oct. 7, Tawhedi and the juvenile met with the FBI assets
at a rural location in the Western District of Oklahoma and purchased,
received, and took possession of two AK-47 assault rifles, ten
magazines, and 500 rounds of ammunition. Upon receipt of the rifles and
ammunition, Tawhedi and the juvenile were arrested. In his seized
communications, Tawhedi allegedly indicated that his attack was planned
for Election Day, and in a post-arrest interview, Tawhedi allegedly
confirmed the attack was planned for Election Day targeting large
gatherings of people, during which he and the juvenile were expected to
die as martyrs.Tawhedi was charged with conspiring and attempting to
provide material support to ISIS, which carries a maximum prison
sentence of 20 years, and receiving a firearm to be used to commit a
felony or a federal crime of terrorism, which carries a maximum prison
sentence of 15 years, if convicted. The case is being investigated by the
FBI Oklahoma City Field Office, with valuable assistance from the
Oklahoma City Police Department and the Moore, Oklahoma Police
Department.Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jessica L. Perry, Matt Dillon, and
Mark Stoneman for the Western District of Oklahoma and Trial Attorneys
George C. Kraehe and Everett McMillian of the National Security
Division’s Counterterrorism Section are prosecuting the case.A criminal
complaint is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent
until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.Updated

Senior Hezbollah figure appears to escape as
Israeli strikes rock central Beirut-Lebanon says 22 others killed in
attack on areas of Lebanese capital previously unscathed by conflict;
IDF eases some restrictions in north even as rocket fire persists-By ToI
Staff and Agencies Today, 1:41 am-CT 11,24
Large blasts shook
Beirut on Thursday evening as Israeli airstrikes targeted at least one
senior Hezbollah member in a previously untouched neighborhood in the
Lebanese capital. The strike came as troops continued to raid villages
in southern Lebanon and as Hezbollah launched dozens of rockets across
the border into Israeli cities and towns.Wafiq Safa, Hezbollah’s Liason
and Coordination Unit chief, was thought to be the target of one of the
strikes, but managed to elude the attack on a third-floor apartment near
central Beirut, three security sources told Reuters. The sources did not
provide any further information. At least 22 other people were killed
and more than 100 were injured in the strikes, Lebanon’s health ministry
said, although Lebanese medical source estimated that the toll was
likely to rise as search and rescue operations continued. The IDF did not
immediately comment on the strikes, which appeared to mark deadliest
attacks in the center of the capital since Israel escalated its campaign
against Hezbollah last month.Shortly after nightfall, Lebanese media
reported that an apartment in an eight-story building on the edge of the
Al Nuwairi and Ras el-Nabaa neighborhoods had been targeted in an
Israeli airstrike.A second building located in the nearby Basta
neighborhood was also said to have been targeted minutes later.Neither
of the locations had previously been targeted in Israeli airstrikes, and
they were well removed from the southern suburbs of Beirut, where
Hezbollah’s headquarters are located. It was the third time that such a
strike had taken place beyond Beirut’s southern suburbs, though there
have also been Israeli strikes on Hezbollah assets across southern
Lebanon and in the eastern Beqaa Valley.Reuters witnesses said at least
one strike hit near a gas station and a thick column of smoke was
visible. A large fire blazed in the background as rescue workers used
torches to search the rubble for survivors, according to video broadcast
by Hezbollah’s al-Manar television. The attempt to kill Safa, whose role
merges security and political affairs, marked a widening of targeting
of Hezbollah officials by Israel, which had so far focused on the
group’s military commanders and top leaders.Safa, whom Middle East media
reports said was born in 1960, oversaw negotiations that led to a 2008
deal in which Hezbollah exchanged the bodies of Israeli soldiers
captured in 2006 for Lebanese prisoners in Israel.Hezbollah’s deadly
2006 raid into northern Israel triggered a 34-day war with Israel. In
2021, Reuters reported that Safa warned the judge investigating Beirut’s
catastrophic 2020 port explosion, who sought to question several
politicians allied with Hezbollah, that Hezbollah would remove him from
the probe .He was sanctioned in 2019 by the US Treasury Department,
which described him as Hezbollah’s interlocutor to the Lebanese security
forces.“As the head of Hezbollah’s security apparatus, which is
directly linked to Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah, Safa has
exploited Lebanon’s ports and border crossings to smuggle contraband and
facilitate travel on behalf of Hezbollah, undermining the security and
safety of the Lebanese people, while also draining valuable import
duties and revenue away from the Lebanese government,” the Treasury
Department wrote at the time.At the same time as details of the strikes
in central Beirut continued to emerge, the IDF’s Arabic language
spokesman Col. Avichay Adraee called on Lebanese civilians near two
buildings in the southern suburb, a Hezbollah stronghold known as
Dahiyeh, to evacuate immediately ahead of airstrikes.“You are in the
vicinity of facilities belonging to Hezbollah,” Adraee warned, calling
on civilians to distance themselves at least 500 meters from the
targeted buildings, which were highlighted in two maps published
alongside the statement. The IDF also warned civilians in southern
Lebanon not to return to their homes, to avoid being harmed by ongoing
fighting, which injured two peacekeepers near a UNIFIL base in the
coastal Naqoura area earlier in the day.Despite the incident, the UN
peacekeeping force again rejected Israel’s request that it evacuate its
posts along the border due to concerns the fighting could harm Blue
Helmets stationed there. The peacekeeping force is deployed along the
border to enforce the 2006 UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which
bars Hezbollah from maintaining a military presence south of the Litani
River. However, the terror group has blatantly violated the resolution
for much of its existence, and the UN has failed to stop it from doing
so, Israel charges.Israel’s Channel 12 news reported Thursday evening
that Foreign Minister Israel Katz had written to the UN Security Council
lambasting the international body for its failure to enforce Resolution
1701.Israel launched its ground operation in southern Lebanon on
September 30, aiming to demolish Hezbollah infrastructure near the
Israeli border to enable the safe return of Israeli residents to their
homes in the north of the country, after a year of near-daily
cross-border attacks.Israel has ordered the evacuation of dozens of
Lebanese localities amid the fighting, which the UN said has caused
600,000 people to become internally displaced. In a video statement
distributed to foreign press Thursday, IDF spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel
Hagari said troops in an evacuated village “built by Hezbollah” were
“raiding every house, seizing all equipment, and dismantling Hezbollah’s
ability” to carry out a plan similar to last year’s October 7 Hamas
terror onslaught in southern Israel. This is a terror base,” he said,
“every house here is ready for a raid against Israel.”Follow IDF

(@IDF) October 10, 2024-The IDF revealed what it said was evidence of
the Iran-backed terror group’s plans last week, presenting images and
maps from the foiled mass invasion plot. The army says that numerous
Hezbollah positions and tunnels, as well as thousands of weapons, have
since been destroyed by troops.Hezbollah rockets continued to rain down
on northern Israel on Thursday, even as the IDF’s Home Front Command
announced that it was easing restrictions on gathering in certain areas
to allow for communal High Holiday prayers.A barrage of some 50 rockets
triggered sirens in multiple communities in the afternoon, including in
Acre and Nahariya. No injuries were caused as a result, although several
impacts were identified.Shortly after, the Israeli Air Force said it had
intercepted a “hostile aircraft” over the Western Galilee, followed by a
drone that crossed into the Upper Galilee from Lebanon.Sirens were
triggered in the area due to concerns that the interception would lead
to falling fragments, but the IDF said that there had been no report of
injuries.Despite the rocket fire, educational activities will be able to
resume in the central Galilee under new guidelines issued by the army
Thursday, so long as they take place near shelters. In the Upper
Galilee, meanwhile, they will be able to resume only from within
shelters. In the southern Golan Heights, Lower Galilee, the Carmel and
Wadi Ara areas, the Home Front Command said gatherings would be allowed
to take place outdoors with 100 people or less, and indoors with 350 or
less.
