HOW COULD POPE FRANCIS BECOME THE ONE WORLD CHUCH RELIGIOUS LEADER.
POPE
FRANCIS PROBABLY HAD A VACCINE SHOT. AND GOT DOUBLE PNEUMONIA FROM THE
VACCINE SHOT. SO 2 WEEKS AGO POPE FRANCIS WAS BROUGHT TO THE HOSPITAL.
THEN COMES SATURDAY MORNING, POPE FRANCIS COULDN'T BREATHE AND THE
HOSPITAL HAD TO QUICKLY TAKE ACTION TO STOP FRRANCIS FROM DYING. THEY
GOT HIS BREATHING UNDER CONTROL BY SUNDAY. BUT THEN THE HOSPITAL REPORT
SAID POPE FRANCIS HAD A PARTIAL COLLAPSE OF HIS KIDNEY. FRANCIS WHEN HE
WAS YOUNG HAD ONE LUNG TAKEN OUT. AND ONLY HAS ONE LUNG LEFT. WELL POPE

New Pope Had Lung Removed During Childhood-By Sydney Lupkin March 13, 2013
Newly
elected Pope Francis is two years younger than Pope Benedict XVI was
when he was elected in 2005, but the 76-year-old from Argentina still
has at least one health issue: He has only one lung.Pope Francis,
formerly known as Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, had one of his lungs removed
when he was a teenager because of an infection, according to the
Associated Press."Obviously, this was a success because here he is at
age 76," said Dr. William Schaffner, chairman of preventive medicine at
Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. "So whatever
they did got him over that precarious period."Schaffner, a former
president of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, said there
are several reasons the new pope could have had his lung removed about
six decades ago:1.) Pope Francis could have had tuberculosis."Back when
he was a young person, there was not yet widespread antibiotic drug
therapy, and it is possible that he had substantial involvement of a
lung or part of a lung and had to have it removed," Schaffner said.
"That was a pretty standard treatment in the pre-antibiotic drug
era."2.) He could have had a complication of whooping cough, or
pertussis."Whooping cough can cause disease of the bronchial tube and
can cause chronic infection," Schaffner said. 3.) He could have had
pneumonia and developed complications."Once again, this was before
conventional antibiotics were widely available, and so they may have had
to treat this complication with surgery by taking out all or part of
his lung," Schaffner said. 4.) Finally, he could have been born with a
congenital lung defect that got infected."They could not eradicate the
infection and, once again, did not have all the antibiotic supportive
care that we have today," Schaffner said. "They just cut out
infection."Although these infections would have been more common in a
middle-aged person than a teenager, Schaffner said they're the most
likely possibilities given the limited information about the lung
removal.Asked whether a person can survive with one lung, Schaffner
said, "Easily." - lungs are redundant, so people who have one removed
are able to live normal lives."Many people have gone on to live
perfectly normal lives, even to engage in tennis, hiking and jogging
with one lung," Schaffner said. "It's like being able to live with only
one kidney."But if Pope Francis gets a disease, he only has one lung to
spare. As people age, they become more vulnerable to lung infections,
such as pneumonia and bronchitis, according to the National Institutes
of Health. People older than 65 are especially likely to develop such
infections. Their risk increases if they have preexisting conditions
such as a weakened immune system or heart disease."Pneumonia is, in
fact, one of the more common respiratory conditions as you age," said
pulmonologist Dr. Greg Martin, who teaches at Emory University and
specializes in critical care. "As a matter of fact, it's one of the more
common causes of death."Martin said there's very little data about the
prognosis of people with one lung and these infections because having
one lung is so rare. But he suspects it would be a complicating factor.
People with decreased lung capacity, such as those with emphysema, have a
more difficult time recovering from lung infections because they don't
have "reserve" healthy lung capacity to help them breathe while the
infection heals."For someone like him, one lung is a potential
complication," he said. "If someone has reduced lung capacity - one
lung, underlying lung disease - they're more susceptible to more severe
pneumonia and more serious complications from pneumonia."
Pope
Francis alert, condition still critical with kidney failure: Vatican-By
Nicole Winfield The Associated Press-Posted February 23, 2025 2:27 pm
In
the latest update from the Vatican regarding the health of Pope Francis
– who has been in “critical condition” for a day – the pontiff’s blood
tests are now showing early kidney failure. Despite the alarming update
and a necessity for high flows of supplemental oxygen, Rome’s Gemelli
hospital says the Pope remains alert and “well-oriented.”Pope Francis
remained in critical condition Sunday and blood tests showed early
kidney failure but he remains alert, responsive and attended Mass, the
Vatican said, as the 88-year-old pontiff battles pneumonia and a complex
lung infection. In a late update, the Vatican said Francis hadn’t had
any more respiratory crises since Saturday night but was still receiving
high flows of supplemental oxygen. Some blood tests showed “initial,
mild, kidney failure,” but doctors said it was under control.“The
complexity of the clinical picture, and the necessary wait for drug
therapies to provide some feedback, dictate that the prognosis remains
guarded,” Francis’ doctors concluded.Prayers for Francis, meanwhile,
poured in from around the world, from his native Argentina to the seat
of Sunni Islam in Cairo to schoolchildren in Rome.In New York, Cardinal
Timothy Dolan admitted what church leaders in Rome weren’t saying
publicly: that the Catholic faithful were united “at the bedside of a
dying father.”“As our Holy Father Pope Francis is in very, very fragile
health, and probably close to death,” Dolan said in his homily from the
pulpit of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, though he later told reporters he
hoped and prayed that Francis would “bounce back.”Doctors have said
Francis’ condition is touch-and-go, given his age, fragility and
pre-existing lung disease. His condition has revived speculation about
what might happen if he becomes unconscious or otherwise incapacitated,
and whether he might resign.Prayers for pope at Vatican-Francis was
supposed to celebrate Mass on Sunday morning in St. Peter’s Basilica and
ordain deacons as part of the Vatican’s yearlong Holy Year
commemoration. The organizer of the Holy Year, Archbishop Rino
Fisichella, celebrated the Mass in his place and offered a special
prayer for Francis from the altar before delivering the homily the pope
had prepared.“Even though he is in a hospital bed, we feel Pope Francis
close to us. We feel him present among us,” Fisichella told the hundreds
of white-robed deacons.A pre-written message that had been prepared for
Francis to read Sunday, but he did not deliver, said he was
“confidently continuing my hospitalization at the Gemelli Hospital,
carrying on with the necessary treatment; and rest is also part of the
therapy!” The message asked for prayers for him — as he always asks —
and noted the upcoming anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, “a
painful and shameful occasion for the whole of humanity.”Meanwhile in
Francis’ native Argentina, Catholics prayed for the pope at the Buenos
Aires cathedral and the city’s iconic obelisk was lit up “Francis, the
city prays for you.”In Cairo, the grand imam of Al-Azhar, the seat of
Sunni learning who forged a close bond with Francis, wished him well.“I
pray to Allah to grant my dear brother, Pope Francis, a swift recovery
and to bless him with good health and well-being so that he may continue
his journey in serving humanity,” Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb wrote in a
Facebook post. The American Jewish Committee also offered prayers. “We
stand together with our Catholic brothers and sisters during this
challenging time,” the group wrote on X.And school children from around
Rome deluged the Gemelli hospital with get-well cards, while Italian
bishops led rosary prayers and celebrated special Masses across
Italy. The main threat facing the pope is sepsis-Doctors have warned that
the main threat facing Francis is sepsis, a serious infection of the
blood that can occur as a complication of pneumonia. To date there has
been no reference to any onset of sepsis in the medical updates provided
by the Vatican, including on Sunday. On Saturday, Francis developed a
low platelet count, which remained low but stable Sunday. Platelets are
cell-like fragments that circulate in the blood that help form blood
clots to stop bleeding or help wounds heal. Low platelet counts can be
caused by a number of things, including side effects from medicines or
infections.Francis also developed anemia and, during blood transfusions
Saturday, was given hematin, a treatment designed to increase the level
of hemoglobin in his his blood, which in turn helps the blood carry more
oxygen. Doctors reported Sunday that the therapy had been
beneficial.Francis, who has chronic lung disease and is prone to
bronchitis in winter, was admitted to Gemelli hospital on Feb. 14 after a
weeklong bout of bronchitis worsened.Doctors first diagnosed the
complex viral, bacterial and fungal respiratory tract infection and then
the onset of pneumonia in both lungs. They prescribed “absolute rest”
and a combination of cortisone and antibiotics, along with supplemental
oxygen when he needs it.Francis’ recent reforms suggest he knew he was
getting older and more fragile-Francis has taken several recent
decisions that suggest he was well aware that he was getting old and
frail.Last year, he revised the funeral rites that will be used after he
dies, simplifying the rituals to emphasize his role as a mere bishop
and allowing for burial outside the Vatican in keeping with his wishes.
But the core elements of the rites remain, including the three key
moments that must be observed between the death of a pope and his
funeral: In his home, in St. Peter’s Basilica and in the place of
burial. In December, Francis created 21 new cardinals. All but one were
under age 80 and thus eligible to vote in a conclave to elect his
successor. Their additions brought the overall number of voting-age
cardinals to 140, well over the 120 limit set by St. John Paul II. But
several of the current electors are turning 80 this year, bringing the
number down.Earlier this month, once he was already sick, Francis
decided to extend the five-year term of the current dean of the College
of Cardinals, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, 91, rather than make way
for someone new. As depicted in the film “Conclave,” the dean of the
College of Cardinals plays an important role in the life of the Catholic
hierarchy, and is a crucial figure during the transition between one
papacy and the next.Francis also decided to extend the term of the
vice-dean, Argentine Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, 81.
She is My
‘Mamá’ – Pope Francis and Mary-The apartment he lives in is replete with
Marian images. The rooms where he officially meets with people are
furnished with portraits of Mary. His own daily clothes carry objects
associated with Mary.03 DECEMBER 2018 · 15:24 CET
“Ella Es Mi
Mamá” (She Is My Mum) is the title of a 2014 book written in Spanish
that contains a long interview with Pope Francis by the Brazilian priest
Alexander Awi Mello.During the interview, Francis highlights the filial
affection and devotion that he has for Mary. Readers of the Vatican
Files know that the Marianism of the Pope has often been covered and
assessed on this blog. Here are some examples:- “Hurrah to Madonna”.
Pope Francis and the Re-Marianization of the Papacy (2013) - The Word
Entrusted to Mary. Why? (2013) - “Without Mary the Heart isan Orphan”.
Another Instance of Francis’ Marianism (2014) - The Marian Message of
Pope Francis to Korea (2014) - “Holy Mother of God!” Three Times! (2015)
- “The Only Creature without Sin”. Pope Francis on the Immaculated
Conception of Mary (2017).This book, which was recently translated into
Italian and includes a new preface, does not break any new ground in
terms of the pervasive presence of the cult of Mary in Francis’
spirituality. What is interesting, though, are the biographical details
that help to explain the personal context of his “applied”
Marianism.FIRST PERSONAL ENCOUNTERS-Born into a devout Roman Catholic
family, the young Jorge Mario Bergoglio was exposed to the Marian
dimension of the faith from his earliest days. He began praying using
Marian prayers, and the first image he possesed was a little medal of
Mary of Mercy. Marianism reached him intuitively as part of family life
and was conveyed with deep affections and tender gestures. As Clodovis
Boff argues, “the incubator of Mariology is the heart, not the mind” (p.
126). In the cult of Mary, experiences and feelings precede and
dominate everything else.Bergoglio’s first experiences of the Catholic
Church were in a parish run by the Salesian order and dedicated to Mary
the Auxiliatrix, so his first impressions of what “church” meant were
thoroughly Marian. The most influential priest in his childhood was one
who would impart Marian blessings and recite Marian prayers when
visiting the Bergoglio family. As a child, Jorge Mario would regularly
bring flowers to the statue of Mary. At 19 years of age he decided to
become a priest while praying in the Marian chapel of his parish church.
His sweetest memories and most decisive moments were punctuated by the
“presence” of Mary surrounding him. In a telling passage of the book, we
are told that “Mary entered progressively and profoundly in his life,
never to leave it again” (p. 49).THE IMPORTANCE OF MARIAN
SANCTUARIES-After becoming a priest, Bergoglio marked his pastoral
activities around Marian devotions. The most popular ones were the
diocesan pilgrimages to the Marian sanctuary of Our Lady of Luján (whose
image oversees the room where he meets with Catholic bishops from
around the world at the Vatican). It is here that he leads thousands of
people to the sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary of Pompei.
He has become so close to Our Lady of Luján that he carries close to his
heart a little piece of cloth that was used to polish her statue back
in Argentina. He wants a physical, on-going touch with something
Marian.Apart from the influence of the Mexican cult Mary of Guadalupe,
and the devotions related to Mary Undoer of Knots, whose veneration he
has introduced in Argentina, Bergoglio’s life has also been shaped by
the cult associated with Our Lady of Aparecida in Brazil. In visiting
Aparecida for World Youth Day in 2013, the Pope said in his speech
there:“What joy I feel as I come to the house of the Mother of every
Brazilian, the Shrine of our Lady of Aparecida! The day after my
election as Bishop of Rome, I visited the Basilica of Saint Mary Major
in Rome, in order to entrust my ministry as the Successor of Peter to
Our Lady. Today I have come here to ask Mary our Mother for the success
of World Youth Day and to place at her feet the life of the people of
Latin America”.Yet another link to a centrally important Marian
sanctuary in the life of the Pope is Saint Mary Major in Rome. He pays a
visit there before and after his journeys around the world in order to
commit them to Mary and ask for her protection.BLURRED THEOLOGY-From
childood to adulthood, from Argentina to the Vatican, from piety to
theology, in his daily spiritual practices and devotions, Marianism is
perhaps the most significant factor shaping the Pope’s life. The
apartment he lives in is replete with Marian images. The rooms where he
officially meets with people are furnished with portraits of Mary. His
own daily clothes carry objects associated with Mary. His prayers are
directed to her. His affections and tender thoughts are oriented to
Mary. The interview is a wide-open window into Francis’ Mariological
vision. All aspects of his life, thought, and ministry – none excluded –
are strongly impacted by his Mariology.Of course, the pervasiveness of
Mary is argued for in theological terms as well. For instance, Jesus is
presented as someone who does not want to do all on his own, but instead
wants Mary to collaborate in the work of salvation (p. 45). According
to the Pope, Jesus always acts according to “the logic of inclusion,”
and Mary’s mediation is therefore an example of such necessary
mediation. Since there are “organic links” between the Son and the
Mother, she is always involved in what the Son does. It is the
“principle of incarnation” that sustains and supports Marian devotions
and veneration (p. 86).While Marianism has a primarily intuitive force
and sentimental power, Mariology tries to connect it to Christology and
therefore to Trinitarian theology, as Vatican II tries to do (Lumen
Gentium 52-69). Quoting the 1979 Puebla document, the Pope goes on to
say that “she is the point of contact between heaven and earth. Without
Mary, the gospel becomes disembodied, defaced and tranforms itself in
ideology, in spiritualistic rationalism” (n. 301).So in this high
Mariology, Christology is also at stake. If Mary is the point of contact
between heaven and earth, isn’t Jesus Christ’s uniqueness as the
God-man imperiled? If the gospel becomes disembodied without Mary, isn’t
the incarnation of the Son blurred? A MARIAN GOSPEL-A major assumption
in most present-day ecumenical dialogues is that there is a solid
agreement among all Christian traditions on basic orthodox Christology,
and thus that Protestants and Roman Catholics share the same
Christology. However, a reading of this book challenges this poor
argument, which is nurtured by theological myopia, and invites us to
take Roman Catholic Mariology seriously in all of its implications for
Christology, salvation, grace, and prayer – in other words, the whole of
theology and practice. If the Pope sees Mary everywhere, even when he
thinks of Christ and the Trinity, salvation, and the Christian life; if
Francis continually prays to Mary; if he strongly feels and seeks the
maternal presence of Mary all the time; is his gospel a Bible-based,
Christ-centered, and God-honoring gospel at all?Soon after Bergoglio
became Pope Francis in 2013, one of the Argentinian theologians who had
influenced him the most, Juan Carlos Scannone, said about him: “He will
emphasize popular piety and spirituality, especially the Marian devotion
which is so typical of Latin America” (p. 138). These words have proven
true. Francis is promoting a “Marian” gospel that contradicts at
fundamental points the biblical gospel of Jesus Christ.Leonardo De
Chirico is an evangelical pastor in Rome (Italy), theologian and expert
in Roman Catholicism.
EU delegation nixes trip to
Jerusalem, West Bank after Israel banned 4 participants-Interior
Ministry bans lawmakers and staffers, one of whom had previously called
Israel a ‘terrorist state’By Jacob Magid-and Agencies Today, 1:11 pm-FEB

A delegation of European Union parliament members has
canceled its trip to Jerusalem and Ramallah after Israel barred two
lawmakers and two staffers from entering the country, the EU’s mission
to the Palestinians told The Times of Israel in a statement on
Monday. The Interior Ministry said earlier in the day that it had denied
entry to French EU MP Rima Hassan over her support for boycotts against
Israel, but the Jerusalem-based EU mission told The Times of Israel that
the delegation’s leader, MP Lynn Boylan, was also denied entry along
with two other EU staffers accompanying the lawmakers. While the Interior
Ministry statement said that Hassan was banned over her public support
for boycotting Israel, the EU mission said that Israeli authorities did
not provide any reasons to any of the officials who were denied
entry. The three other MPs traveling with Boylan and Hassan were allowed
into Israel, but they will return to Europe on the first flight tomorrow
morning, as Boylan decided to cancel the delegation entirely, the EU
mission said. The Interior Ministry had previously said Hassan would not
be allowed to enter the country, accusing her of acting “on a regular
basis to promote the boycott against Israel” and pointing to her prior
public statements.Hassan has previously called Israel a “terrorist”
state and accused its military of having “coldly executed Palestinian
children,” while advocating for it to “leave Palestine.”She is currently
facing a court case in France on the charge of “apology for terrorism”
after saying in a true-false interview given in the wake of Hamas’s
devastating October 7, 2023, attack on Israel that it was “true” that
the terror group’s actions were legitimate. She later claimed her words
were taken out of context. The diplomatic incident came as Foreign
Minister Gideon Sa’ar was in Brussels to meet with EU leadership and the
bloc’s 27 foreign ministers, as part of the annual Association Council
meeting — Israel’s first meeting with the Council since 2022.The talks,
which Sa’ar was co-chairing with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas,
focused on the humanitarian situation in Gaza, Israeli-Palestinian
relations and changing regional dynamics, amid last month’s fragile
ceasefire and hostage deal between Israel and the Hamas terror group. The
talks were held as the bloc considers its potential role in the
reconstruction of Gaza following US President Donald Trump’s
announcement of his plan to take over the Strip and permanently displace
its residents.Ahead of Sa’ar’s meetings with the EU officials, the
bloc’s member countries, some of which have harshly criticized Israel
over the war in Gaza, negotiated a compromise position that praised
areas of cooperation with Israel while also raising concerns. The bloc
has been split on Israel amid the war in Gaza, sparked when thousands of
Hamas-led terrorists stormed southern Israel on October 7, 2023,
killing some 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. Some EU countries,
such as Germany, Hungary and Italy, have struck a pro-Israel stance,
while others, such as Spain, Ireland and Slovenia, have harshly
criticized the destruction in Gaza during the subsequent war on Hamas. In
February 2024, the leaders of Spain and Ireland sent a letter to the
European Commission asking for a review of whether Israel was complying
with its human rights obligations under the 2000 EU-Israel Association
Agreement, which provides the basis for political and economic
cooperation between the two sides.Over Israel’s opposition, Spain,
Ireland and Slovenia have in the past year recognized Palestinian
statehood and applied to join South Africa’s case in the International
Court of Justice accusing Israel of genocide. Sa’ar shuttered Israel’s
embassy in Ireland in December, a month after taking office.Israel
strongly rejects the accusation of genocide, saying it only targets
terror operatives and seeks to minimize civilian fatalities, and
stressing that Hamas uses Gaza’s civilians as human shields, fighting
from civilian areas including homes, hospitals, schools and
mosques.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

US-supplied weapons by allies, two US officials and a source familiar
with the decision said on Monday.Signed by Biden last year, National
Security Memorandum 20 (NSM-20) required all countries that receive
weapons from the US to commit in writing that they will not use them to
target civilians or restrict humanitarian aid.Countries were already
required to commit to using the arms in line with international law, but
the concept of a written commitment was new as was the memo’s directive
for the State Department to report to Congress on the mater.Biden
agreed to sign the memo amid pressure from progressive Democrats who
specifically were looking to curb US military assistance to Israel,
arguing that it was being used to harm civilians in Gaza. The State
Department report issued several months after the memo avoided reaching a
determination that Israel was indeed misusing US security assistance,
infuriating the progressive lawmakers behind NSM-20.The May 2024 report
said Israel may have breached international humanitarian law but that US
officials were unable to identify specific instances of breaches that
harmed civilians due to the chaos of war.The Trump administration would
have been required in the coming months to report to Congress its own
assessment of Israel’s conduct. The Washington Post cited an order issued
by White House national security adviser Michael Waltz on February 21
repealing NSM-20. Reuters was not able to independently confirm the
existence of the order, but two US officials and a source familiar with
the move said they had been told the directive was revoked. The State
Department referred questions to the White House, which did not
immediately respond to a request for comment.US Senator Chris Van Hollen
of Maryland, a key proponent of congressional oversight of US arms
sales, said the decision to revoke the memo was “shameful.”“It’s a
disservice to our national security, to global human rights and to our
standing around the world,” Van Hollen said in a statement.“This move
also undermines American taxpayers’ right to ensure the use of their
dollars aligns with our laws and our national interest,” he added. “It’s
another clear example of Trump’s blatant indifference to American
values. This is not America first – it’s America in retreat.”After
returning to office on January 20, President Donald Trump signed an
executive order that called for a review of all national security
memoranda issued under Biden. He also reversed a decision by Biden to
freeze a shipment of 2,000-lbs bombs to Israel, which had been in place
since last spring due to concerns that the IDF would use them in densely
populated areas and cause unnecessary civilian harm.
Hamas said
weighing quiet handover of slain hostages for delayed prisoners-Report
says terror group could transfer bodies to Egypt to be ID’d before
inmates set free in two groups, as official warns ceasefire on ‘brink of
collapse’ if logjam persists By Lazar Berman-and ToI Staff Today, 4:35
am-FEB 25,25
The Hamas terror group was reportedly considering a
deal Monday to transfer the bodies of two slain hostages to Egypt in
exchange for hundreds of prisoners previously slated for release, as
international mediators sought to salvage a fraying ceasefire deal in
Gaza.Israel says it is holding onto 602 Palestinian inmates who had been
scheduled to be freed Saturday until Hamas halts the practice of
holding elaborate, propaganda-filled ceremonies when releasing hostages
or transferring the bodies of those slain in captivity. The decision,
announced early Sunday, has set off a flurry of diplomatic activity
aimed at keeping the ceasefire alive, with the crisis compounding
worries that negotiators will fail to secure an agreement on extending
the ceasefire beyond an early March deadline and into a second phase of
hostage releases.A senior Israeli official was quoted by the Walla news
site warning that the entire hostage-ceasefire deal is on “the brink of
collapse” if the current impasse is not bridged by Thursday.Under the
current deal, Hamas is scheduled to transfer the bodies of four hostages
killed in captivity on Thursday, marking the final hostage-prisoner
exchange of the first stage of the agreement, which began on January
19.However, a Channel 12 news report Monday indicated that mediators are
working on a formula that could see Hamas transfer two of the bodies to
Egypt as early as Tuesday, in exchange for 301 of the prisoners from
the Saturday release.Should the formula work, the process would then be
repeated for the two other hostages and the remaining 301 prisoners,
according to the unsourced report.By going through Egypt, Israel hopes
the transfers will take place quietly, amid palpable anger and disgust
over staged ceremonies put on by Hamas in Gaza in which hostages are
forced to feign appreciation for their captors in front of crowds of
Gazans before being handed over to the Red Cross. On Saturday, Hamas
published a propaganda video showing two hostages not slated for release
being forced to watch the ceremony and beg for their freedom, further
fueling Israeli ire.Hamas held a similar ceremony last week for the
handover of coffins containing the remains of octogenarian hostage Oded
Lifshitz, young brothers Ariel and Kfir Bibas, respectively 4 years old
and 9 months old when kidnapped on October 7, 2023, and their mother
Shiri Bibas. The coffins were put on display in front of gawking crowds
and gun-toting terror group operatives.Israel had been slated to release
the 602 prisoners on Saturday, including dozens serving multiple life
sentences for deadly attacks on Israelis, in exchange for six living
hostages, including two who had been held in Gaza for around a
decade.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu decided late Saturday night to
postpone the release of the inmates, accusing Hamas of repeatedly
violating the ceasefire and saying the prisoners would only be released
once Israel receives a promise that ceremonies “demeaning our hostages’
dignity” come to an end.According to the senior Israeli official quoted
by Walla, Hamas has since agreed to transfer the bodies of the four
hostages on Thursday without any fanfare. But despite appearing to meet
Netanyahu’s demands, the premier responded by stiffening the ultimatum,
informing mediators that a commitment from the terror group is
insufficient and that the prisoners will only be let out once Israel
receives the hostages and verifies their identity, the source
said.Israel has insisted on verifying that the released remains are
indeed what they expect to receive, after Hamas last week sent a Gazan
woman’s body in place of Shiri Bibas’s remains. It eventually gave Israel
the murdered hostage’s remains. The Prime Minister’s Office dismissed
the Walla report as “more fake news from the echoes of Hamas
propaganda.”“Through his aggressive stance, the prime minister has
already returned 192 hostages and he is determined to return them all,”
the PMO added.Hamas denies any talks with Israel-Saudi-owned newspaper
Asharq al-Awsat reported earlier Monday that negotiations between Israel
and Hamas were progressing and could lead to the handover of two
hostages’ bodies within hours.Hamas denied the Saudi news reports,
however, doubling down on its official boycott of talks with Israel
through mediators. In a statement on Telegram, Hamas official Mahmoud
Mardawi demanded that Israel implement the ceasefire agreement by
“releasing the 600 Palestinian prisoners” who were supposed to be freed
on Saturday, and said the terror group had not changed its stance
regarding continued negotiations. The three-stage ceasefire agreement,
reached last month, halted some 15 months of fighting triggered by
Hamas’s October 7, 2023, onslaught, when Hamas-led invading terrorists
killed some 1,200 people and took 251 hostages. The deal requires Hamas
to gradually release all its hostages, Israel to release thousands of
Palestinian security prisoners in return, and both sides to halt
fighting in the Strip, as the sides negotiate for a “sustainable calm”
and the IDF withdraws gradually from the enclave. With the first phase
of the deal set to end this coming Saturday, negotiations are ongoing
for the second phase.Israeli officials have repeatedly stated in recent
days that there are battle plans ready should the war resume. But Gal
Hirsch, the government’s liaison with relatives of hostages, indicated
in a meeting with the families Monday that Israel was still attempting
to negotiate an agreement to extend the deal to phase two.“We’re trying
to continue the phased releases to bring back living hostages, and the
dead,” he was quoted saying by Channel 12.Hirsch also reportedly told
the families that Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, a close
Netanyahu loyalist, was heading up negotiations, alongside himself.
Previous rounds were negotiated by a team headed by Mossad chief David
Barnea and Shin Bet counterpart Ronen Bar.According to the Kan public
broadcaster on Monday, Israel is currently seeking to extend the
current, first phase of the deal — repeating the framework of 42 days,
with a hostage release each week — without committing to end the war.
According to an Israeli official, negotiations for phase two would
continue during this extended phase one. However, Egypt, which has served
as a key mediator, has refused to discuss an extension of phase one
until negotiations over phase two begin, according to two Egyptian
officials who were not authorized to brief reporters and spoke on
condition of anonymity. One official familiar with the negotiations said
the mere launch of phase two talks would keep the truce intact,
according to the language of the deal. That would mean a continued halt
in fighting and aid flowing into Gaza, though there would be no further
hostage releases beyond what has already been negotiated, he said,
speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss closed diplomatic
contacts.Hamas has previously said it is open to a short extension to
complete talks on phase two, but that was before Israel held up the
release of the prisoners. One of the Egyptian officials said Egypt is
also demanding Israel complete its withdrawal from the Philadelphi
corridor, on the Gaza side of the border with Egypt, before moving on to
the next phase. The agreement calls for that withdrawal to begin this
weekend and be completed within eight days.US President Donald Trump’s
Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff said Sunday he was traveling to the region
this week and hoped to “get an extension of phase one” of the deal. The
US expects “there will be a phase two” of the deal, he said, adding that
Netanyahu is motivated to make a deal, but called any Hamas role in
governing Gaza post-war a “red line.”Trump reposts video from freed
hostage-Trump Monday reposted a message sent to him by released
US-Israeli hostage Keith Siegel on his Truth Social page.In the video,
Siegel could be seen standing outside the ruins of a home in Kibbutz
Kfar Aza. He introduced himself as the “first American hostage freed in
the deal that you set in place,” once again thanking Trump for his
efforts.Siegel said it is hard for him to comprehend the destruction
that Hamas wrought on October 7. “Homes that were destroyed by Hamas,
that were burned. People of the kibbutz that were murdered, burned
alive.”He urged Trump to act to get the rest of the hostages out of
Gaza, saying the situation is urgent.

Israel’s WMDs, Nukes Threaten World Peace: Iranian FM-February, 25, 2025 - 11:30 Politics news
TEHRAN
(Tasnim) – The Israeli regime’s weapons of mass destruction, including
nuclear weapons, pose a grave threat to regional and global peace and
security and obstruct the establishment of a nuclear-weapon-free zone in
the Middle East, the Iranian foreign minister said.Iranian Foreign
Minister Abbas Araqchi delivered a speech to the High-Level Segment of
the Conference on Disarmament, held in Geneva on February 24.What
follows is the text of his statement:In the Name of God, the Most
Compassionate, the Most Merciful (SATAN) Thank you, Madam. President,It
is an honor to speak on behalf of the Islamic Republic of Iran before
the Conference on Disarmament’s High-Level Segment, and I congratulate
you and Japan for assuming the presidency of the Conference on
Disarmament. The threatening spread of armed conflicts against a backdrop
of geopolitical tensions is plaguing our world into further turbulence.
Regrettably, we are witnessing increasing resort to the use or threat
of force, military interventions, unilateral coercive measures, and
political pressure, in disregard to the longstanding commitments to
disarmament and arms control. This is an alarming trend that must be
reversed immediately. In practical terms, the current state of
international peace and security reflects a complex and fragile global
landscape marked by rising geopolitical tensions, ongoing conflicts, the
qualitative and quantitative proliferation by certain nuclear weapon
States, and the persistent threat of the use of nuclear weapons. Global
military spending has reached unprecedented levels, underscoring the
growing militarization of international relations. At the same time,
nuclear arsenals remain significant, with over 12000 nuclear weapons in
the stockpiles. In this context, the destruction inflicted by the Israeli
regime in the occupied Palestinian territory represents the most
horrifying recorded case of aggression, genocide, war crimes, and crimes
against humanity in the 21st century, which no human conscience should
tolerate. The Israeli regime has unleashed an unparalleled degree of
suffering and untold sorrow which the UN Charter was meant to prevent.
This illegal war has ruined Gaza and over 46000, mostly children, women,
and elderly have lost their lives. Never ever, such high numbers of
journalists, health workers, and UN staff were killed in an armed
conflict. The deliberate war crimes, ethnic cleansing, mass starvation,
and collective punishment exercised by the Israeli regime shall not
remain unpunished.Madam President,These days’ concern about threats that
"multilateralism" is facing, seems to be now one of the most frequent
issues raised by many around the world but still, it appears to be far
from understanding of many nations how big the threat of unilateralism
is and how adversely it is affecting our daily lives. We need to realize
the dangerous consequences of unilateralism for international peace and
security and should not let it become normalized. The UN was established
to save the succeeding generations from the war. In so doing, the UN
founders committed themselves to a set of high principles and purposes
that could only be safeguarded and promoted through collective
cooperation and collaboration. Unilateralism, indeed is terminology, for
lawlessness and extreme resort to power which pose a serious threat to
international peace and security.Despite the increasing likelihood of a
nuclear war -driven mainly by modernization efforts and an escalating
nuclear arms race, nuclear-weapon States, in particular the United
States, are significantly increasing their budgets for nuclear weapons
programs. Simultaneously, countries like the United Kingdom are
expanding their nuclear stockpiles and lowering the threshold for
possible nuclear weapon use.To exacerbate the current state of affairs,
in addition to the erosion of key nuclear arms control agreements, there
is widespread non-compliance with legally binding obligations related
to nuclear disarmament, particularly under Article VI of the NPT and
their commitments under the Treaty's 2000 and 2010 Review Conferences.
Regrettably, there is no promising prospect for change in the
foreseeable future. The international community rightfully expects the
nuclear-weapon States to be held accountable for their obligations. In
the wake of the failures of the 2015 and 2022 NPT Review Conferences,
the success of the next Conference hinges upon the political will of the
nuclear-weapon States.Nuclear weapons continue to be an existential
threat to humanity. Their use would result in catastrophic humanitarian
and environmental consequences. Therefore, nuclear disarmament must be
accorded the highest priority of the United Nations, as agreed in the
first United Nations Special Session on Disarmament (SSOD-I).To this
end, the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons must remain a taboo.
The only guaranteed safeguard against their use or threat lies in their
complete and verifiable elimination, accompanied by legally binding
assurances of non-production, avoidance of nuclear sharing, as well as
non-formation of nuclear military alliances. It is worth mentioning that
notions such as "nuclear risk reduction" or similar initiatives should
not serve as an excuse to delay or substitute the fulfillment of
absolute legal obligations. At a regional level, the weapons of mass
destruction including nuclear weapons possessed by the Israeli regime
continue to pose a grave threat to regional and global peace and
security. It obstructs the establishment of a nuclear-weapon-free zone
in the Middle East initiated by Iran in 1974 and continues to threaten
others with nuclear annihilation. A vivid example of this regime’s
outlawed action was the evil suggestion of using nuclear weapons against
the people in Gaza, claimed by several Israeli authorities. We
categorically condemn this illegitimate, illegal, and irresponsible
action and position. The international community must hold this regime
accountable, demanding that it renounce the possession of nuclear
weapons, accede to the NPT as a non-nuclear-weapon party, and subject
all its nuclear facilities and activities to the comprehensive IAEA
safeguards.Undoubtedly, the same strong attention is needed towards
chemical and biological weapons. It is noteworthy to add that we are
concerned about the threat posed by the use of these two types of
weapons by terrorists or the Israeli regime, which is not a Party to
either of the Conventions.Furthermore, we must not overlook the perils
posed by new technologies, as these have the potential to disrupt global
stability and security. As some have weaponized outer space and
cyberspace, we reiterate our steadfast position on their exclusively
peaceful use. Legally binding instruments must be established to ensure
their exclusive dedication to peaceful purposes. In addition, any
attempts to interpret or impose unilateral coercive measures that
infringe on the inalienable rights of states in these domains must be
avoided.Iran remains fully committed to implementing its international
commitments. Last year, our presidency of the Conference on Disarmament,
in collaboration with member states, did help overcome the chronic
impasse on the Program of Work through new ideas. At the beginning of
this year, I was delighted to see the extent of fruitful collaboration
among the member states, and I hope this cooperation will lead the CD to
a long-overdue successful step.Madam President,The world stands at a
critical juncture where peace, disarmament, and international
cooperation must prevail over the destructive forces of armed violence
and the proliferation of WMDs. In this context, achieving meaningful
progress in international peace and security requires balancing national
interests with collective responsibilities. Iran’s participation in
global non-proliferation efforts hinges on addressing its legitimate
security concerns while ensuring compliance with its international
commitments. We call upon the international community to unite in a
collective effort to ensure a safer world, and we are ready to play our
constructive role in achieving this lofty goal. We owe this to our
future generations.I thank you, Madam President.
