the angel was speaking.
SECOND ANGEL: MIDDLE EAST

Middle East countries. I saw Iran, Persia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, all of
Georgia - Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, all of Asia Minor - full
of blood. I saw blood all over these countries. And I saw fire; Nuclear
weapons used in many of those countries. Smoke rising from everywhere.
Sudden destruction – men destroying one another. I heard these
words:"Israel, Oh Israel, the great judgment has come."

Iran FM warns Europe against 'strategic mistake' at IAEA; Iran obtained 'sensitive' Israeli intel by AFP Staff Writers.
Tehran
(AFP) June 6, 2025-Iran warned European powers on Friday against
backing a draft resolution at the International Atomic Energy Agency
next week accusing Tehran of non-compliance, calling it a "strategic
mistake"."Instead of engaging in good faith, the E3 is opting for malign
action against Iran at the IAEA Board of Governors," Foreign Minister
Abbas Araghchi said on X, referring to Britain, France and Germany."Mark
my words as Europe ponders another major strategic mistake: Iran will
react strongly against any violation of its rights."The warning from
Iran's top diplomat comes as the three European governments prepare to
join Washington in backing a censure resolution at next week's board
meeting, a diplomatic source told AFP.The resolution would accuse Iran
of failing to meet its nuclear obligations and carries the threat of
referral to the UN Security Council if Tehran "does not show goodwill",
the source added.Araghchi said Tehran had demonstrated "years of good
cooperation with the IAEA - resulting in a resolution which shut down
malign claims of a 'possible military dimension' (PMD) to Iran's
peaceful nuclear programme"."My country is once again accused of
'non-compliance,'" he added, blaming "shoddy and politicised
reporting".The criticism follows a quarterly report from the IAEA last
week which cited a "general lack of cooperation" from Iran and raised
concerns over undeclared nuclear material.Tehran rejected the report as
politically motivated and based on "forged documents" it said had been
provided by its arch foe Israel. The pressure on Iran comes amid indirect
talks with the United States, mediated by Oman since April 12, to forge
a new nuclear agreement between the longtime foes. The two sides have
been publicly at odds over uranium enrichment, the process that produces
fuel for nuclear reactors or, in highly extended form, the material for
a nuclear warhead.Iran insists it has the right to enrich uranium under
the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the issue is
"non-negotiable".But in a post on his Truth Social network on Monday,
President Donald Trump said the United States "WILL NOT ALLOW ANY
ENRICHMENT OF URANIUM" by Iran.Tehran and Washington are seeking a new
agreement to replace a 2015 deal with major powers which Trump
unilaterally abandoned during his first term in 2018.The agreement
quickly unravelled as Trump reimposed sweeping sanctions and Tehran
began walking back its own commitments a year later.Iran currently
enriches uranium to 60 percent, well above the 3.67 percent cap set by
the 2015 deal but below the 90 percent threshold required for a nuclear
warhead. In an interview with the Financial Times published on Friday,
IAEA chief Rafael Grossi warned that while "Iran doesn't have a nuclear
weapon at this moment, it has the material."He warned that should Iran
acquire a nuclear weapon, it would trigger "a cascade in the Middle
East".Grossi further cautioned that failure in ongoing US-Iran nuclear
talks "will imply, most probably, military action" against Iran - a
threat raised by both the US and its ally Israel.Britain, France and
Germany, which were all party to the 2015 deal, are considering whether
to trigger a "snapback" of UN sanctions under its dispute resolution
mechanism -- an option that expires on the deal's 10th anniversary in
October.
Iran threatens to soon reveal ‘treasure trove’ of secret
Israeli nuclear files-Iran’s intelligence minister says it is an
‘understatement’ to say Tehran obtained thousands of documents, but
doesn’t give evidence to back claim; Israel yet to comment on matter By
Reuters Today, 5:28 pm-JUN 8,25
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates —
Sensitive Israeli documents obtained by Tehran should be unveiled soon,
Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib told state TV on Sunday, describing
them as a “treasure trove” that will strengthen Iran’s offensive
capabilities.Iranian state media reported on Saturday that Iranian
intelligence agencies had obtained a large trove of sensitive Israeli
documents, without any evidence to support the claims. Khatib said these
were related to Israel’s nuclear facilities and its relations with the
United States, Europe, and other countries, and to its defensive
capabilities. There was no immediate official comment from Israel. It was
not clear whether the information breach was linked to a reported
hacking of an Israeli nuclear research center last year, which Tehran is
only disclosing now amid heightened tensions over its nuclear
program.“The transfer of this treasure trove was time-consuming and
required security measures. Naturally, the transfer methods will remain
confidential but the documents should be unveiled soon,” Khatib said,
adding that in terms of volume, “talking of thousands of documents would
be an understatement.”In 2018, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said
that Israeli agents had seized a huge “archive” of Iranian documents
that showed Tehran had done more nuclear work than previously known. The
US is currently in talks with Iran to resolve a decade-long dispute over
its nuclear ambitions, although US President Donald Trump has
threatened military action against the country’s nuclear facilities if
no agreement is reached. He has favored diplomatic efforts, despite the
threats, and in April reportedly blocked a planned Israeli strike on
Iran’s nuclear facilities so as not to upend the negotiations.Iran’s
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Wednesday that abandoning
uranium enrichment was “100 percent” against Iran’s interests, rejecting
a central US demand in talks.Western powers say Iran, which is sworn to
Israel’s destruction, is refining uranium to a high degree of fissile
purity close to the level suitable for atomic bomb fuel, a level with no
non-weapon purpose. Iran has long denied seeking nuclear weapons.Times
of Israel staff contributed to this report.
West plans nuclear resolution against Iran: diplomats.
Vienna
(AFP) June 5, 2025 - Western allies are planning to file a resolution
to the world nuclear watchdog condemning Iran for "non-compliance" over
its nuclear programme, diplomatic sources told AFP on Thursday. It is the
latest move in years-long efforts to restrict Iran's nuclear activities
over fears that it is seeking to develop nuclear weapons, which it
denies. The United States and European countries will submit the
resolution to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) board next
week, with the threat of referring the issue to the United Nations, the
sources said. After a recent IAEA report showed "a general lack of
cooperation" by Tehran, the United States, Britain, France and Germany
"are tabling a resolution that will find Iran in non-compliance" with
its nuclear obligations, a senior diplomatic source said.Recent rounds
of talks between the United States and Iran, mediated by Oman, have
aimed to secure an agreement on limiting enrichment in exchange for
sanctions relief. Two other diplomats confirmed the resolution initiative
in comments to AFP, saying it would "increase pressure" on Iran, with a
vote scheduled at the IAEA board in Vienna on June 11.Iran rejected
last week's IAEA report, calling it a "political" manoeuvre, and accused
Israel of contributing "unreliable and misleading information" to
it.The moves come with high tensions in the Middle East over Israel's
military offensive in Gaza.Iran has denied seeking nuclear arms and says
it needs the uranium for civilian power production.Diplomatic sources
said the threat of action at the UN Security Council (UNSC), which can
draw up sanctions, aimed to give Tehran "a last chance" to comply with
western demands. One source said the allies would refer Iran to the UNSC
in the coming months if Iran "does not show goodwill" but that Tehran
would be given "a window to finally comply".
Iran says no sanctions relief in US nuclear proposal.
Tehran,
June 8 (AFP) Jun 08, 2025-Iran's parliament speaker said on Sunday that
the latest US proposal for a nuclear deal does not include the lifting
of sanctions, state media reported as negotiations appeared to have hit a
roadblock. The two foes have held five rounds of Omani-mediated talks
since April, seeking to replace a landmark agreement between Tehran and
world powers that set restrictions on Iran's nuclear activities in
return for sanctions relief, before US President Donald Trump abandoned
the accord in 2018 during his first term.In a video aired on Iranian
state TV, parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said that "the US
plan does not even mention the lifting of sanctions".He called it a sign
of dishonesty, accusing the Americans of seeking to impose a
"unilateral" agreement that Tehran would not accept."The delusional US
president should know better and change his approach if he is really
looking for a deal," Ghalibaf said.On May 31, after the fifth round of
talks, Iran said it had received "elements" of a US proposal, with
officials later taking issue with "ambiguities" in the draft text. The US
and its Western allies have long accused the Islamic republic of
seeking to acquire nuclear weapons, a charge Iran has consistently
denied, insisting that its atomic programme was solely for peaceful
purposes.Key issues in the negotiations have been the removal of biting
economic sanctions and uranium enrichment.Tehran says it has the right
to enrich uranium under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, while the
Trump administration has called any Iranian enrichment a "red
line".Trump, who has revived his "maximum pressure" campaign of
sanctions on Iran since taking office in January, has repeatedly said it
will not be allowed any uranium enrichment under a potential deal.On
Tuesday, Iran's top negotiator, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, said
the country "will not ask anyone for permission to continue enriching
uranium".- IAEA meeting -According to the UN nuclear watchdog, the
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran is the only
non-nuclear-weapon state in the world that enriches uranium up to 60
percent -- close to the 90 percent threshold needed for a nuclear
warhead.Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Wednesday
rejected the latest US proposal and said enrichment was "key" to Iran's
nuclear programme. The IAEA Board of Governors is scheduled to meet in
Vienna starting Monday and discuss Iran's nuclear activities. On Sunday
the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran warned it could reduce its level
of cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog if it adopts a resolution
against it."Certainly, the IAEA should not expect the Islamic Republic
of Iran to continue its broad and friendly cooperation," the Iranian
agency's spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi told state TV.Araghchi on Friday
accused European powers of "opting for malign action against Iran at the
IAEA Board of Governors", warning on X that "Iran will react strongly
against any violation of its rights".A quarterly report from the IAEA
issued last week cited a "general lack of cooperation" from Iran and
raised concerns over undeclared nuclear material.Tehran has rejected the
report as politically motivated and based on "forged documents" it said
had been provided by its arch foe Israel.pdm/ami/dcp
Japan allows longer nuclear plant lifespans.
Tokyo,
June 6 (AFP) Jun 06, 2025-A law allowing nuclear reactors to operate
beyond 60 years took effect in Japan on Friday, as the government turns
back to atomic energy 14 years after the Fukushima catastrophe. The
world's fourth-largest economy is targeting carbon neutrality by 2050
but remains heavily reliant on fossil fuels -- partly because many
nuclear reactors were taken offline after the 2011 Fukushima
meltdown. The government now plans to increase its reliance on nuclear
power, in part to help meet growing energy demand from artificial
intelligence and microchip factories. The 60-year limit was brought in
after the 2011 disaster, which was triggered by a devastating earthquake
and tsunami in northeast Japan.Under the amended law, nuclear plants'
operating period may be extended beyond 60 years -- in a system similar
to extra time in football games -- to compensate for stoppages caused by
"unforeseeable circumstances", the government says. This means, for
example, that one reactor in central Japan's Fukui region, suspended for
12 years after the Fukushima crisis, will now be able to operate up
until 2047 -- 72 years after its debut, the Asahi Shimbun daily
reported. But operators require approval from Japan's nuclear safety
watchdog for the exemption. The law also includes measures intended to
strengthen safety checks at ageing reactors. The legal revision is also
aimed at helping Japan better cope with power crunches, after Russia's
invasion of Ukraine sparked energy market turmoil.Japan's Strategic
Energy Plan had previously vowed to "reduce reliance on nuclear power as
much as possible".But this pledge was dropped from the latest version
approved in February, which includes an intention to make renewables the
country's top power source by 2040.Under the plan, nuclear power will
account for around 20 percent of Japan's energy supply by 2040 -- up
from 5.6 percent in 2022.Also in February, Japan pledged to slash
greenhouse gas emissions by 60 percent in the next decade from 2013
levels, a target decried by campaigners as far short of what was needed
under the Paris Agreement to limit global warming.Japan is the world's
fifth largest single-country emitter of carbon dioxide after China, the
United States, India and Russia.
Three dead as Ukraine hit with third-straight day of overnight attacks-by Simon Corlett.
Washington
DC (UPI) Jun 7, 2025-A Russian missile and drone attack in the
Ukrainian city of Kharkiv early Saturday killed at least three people
and injured more than 20 others, officials have confirmed.Mayor Ihor
Terekhov called the attacks in the country's second-largest city "pure
terror," as Ukraine faced overnight bombardment for the third straight
day.At least four people died and more than 50 were injured during
overnight missile and drone attacks early Friday morning that marked one
of Russia's largest aerial assaults of the year, involving almost 500
drones.President Volodymyr Zelensky said the Friday attacks affected
nearly the entire country.Kharkiv faced "at least 40 explosions" during
the overnight attacks, Terekhov said on his Telegram social media
account."Kharkiv is currently experiencing the most powerful attack
since the start of the full-scale war," Terekhov wrote."The enemy is
striking simultaneously with missiles, (drones) and guided aerial bombs.
This is outright terror against peaceful Kharkiv."A 14-year-old girl
and a boy under the age of two were among those injured in the latest
Russian attacks carried out by over 50 drones and four guided aerial
bombs, the Kharkiv regional prosecutor's office.Ukrainian officials said
18 apartment buildings and an additional 13 residential buildings were
damaged in the attacks."The strikes achieved their objectives. All
designated targets were destroyed," Russia's Defense Ministry wrote on
Telegram. The attacks came as the two countries were set to carry out a
prisoner exchange that would see hundreds of soldiers on both sides
repatriated, including the bodies of thousands of those killed in the
conflict.Russian officials on Saturday said Ukraine "unexpectedly
postponed both the acceptance of bodies and the exchange of prisoners of
war for an indefinite period," following the latest round of attacks.
IAEA head in Damascus to discuss nuclear power.
Damascus,
June 4 (AFP) Jun 04, 2025-UN nuclear watchdog head Rafael Grossi said
Wednesday his agency and Syrian authorities would begin "exploring the
possibility of nuclear power", on his first visit to Damascus since the
ouster of Bashar al-Assad.The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
has repeatedly been at loggerheads with Syria in the past over what it
says are "unresolved issues" regarding suspected nuclear activities. On
his visit, the IAEA chief met with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and
Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani."Honoured to meet Syrian President
Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus. I recognise his courage in cooperating with
full transparency to close a chapter of Syria's past that diverted

the two sides "will also begin exploring the possibility of nuclear
power in Syria"."Our cooperation is key to closing outstanding issues
and focusing on the much needed help IAEA can provide Syria in health
and agriculture," he added. The IAEA has urged Syria repeatedly to
cooperate fully with the agency in connection to a suspected nuclear
reactor at the Deir Ezzor desert site.Israel in 2018 admitted carrying
out a top-secret air raid in 2007 against what it said was a nuclear
reactor under construction at the site in eastern Syria.Syria had denied
it was building a nuclear reactor.Grossi visited Damascus in March last
year, meeting then president Assad who was overthrown in December after
nearly 14 years of civil war.Grossi told an IAEA Board of Governors
meeting in March this year that he had requested Syria's cooperation to
"fulfil our obligation to verify nuclear material and facilities" and to
"address unresolved issues"."Clarifying these issues remains essential
to Syria demonstrating its commitment to nuclear non-proliferation and
international peace and security," he said at the time.
Undeterred
by Colorado attack, several hundred rally for hostages in NYC-More
activists than usual attend the weekly rally in wake of Boulder
firebombing; ‘We will not be stopped by hate,’ organizer tells crowd-By

NEW YORK — Several hundred
demonstrators rallied in support of the Israeli hostages on Sunday in
New York City’s Central Park, after a firebombing of a hostage rally in
Boulder, Colorado, last weekend. The Central Park rally takes place every
Sunday, and the latest demonstration drew a larger crowd than usual as
participants, including community leaders, showed up in response to the
Colorado attack, despite security concerns. The crowd held photos of the
hostages and Israeli flags and chanted, “Seal the deal,” and “You are
not alone.”Speakers repeatedly referred to the attack in Colorado.“That
group in Boulder was attacked by a person with the worst intentions,”
organizer Eilon Baer told the crowd. “We will not be stopped by hate, we
will not be stopped by violence, we will continue showing up.”“We know
that there are those who try to silence us,” said Eric Goldstein, the
head of the UJA-Federation of New York.“They were not silenced, they’re
back again this week,” Goldstein said of the protest group in Boulder.
“We cannot be silenced. We must come back stronger.”Also attending were
former hostage Raz Ben Ami, US Rep. Dan Goldman, Jewish Community
Relations Council of New York leader Mark Treyger, New York City
Councilmember Susan Zhuang, and the parents of Matan Lior, an Israeli
killed at the Supernova party during Hamas’s October 2023 invasion of
Israel. Some in the crowd cried as Lior’s mother, Sarah Cohen, described
his final moments.Organizers said they had increased security at the
event. The crowd gave a round of applause for the police and the
security company protecting the rally. The Boulder attack came after a
shooter murdered two Israeli embassy staffers in Washington, DC, and an
arsonist set fire to the home of Jewish Pennsylvania Governor Josh
Shapiro in April. All three attackers said they were motivated by the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The series of attacks has fueled fears of
further violence from left-wing anti-Israel activists.Organizers at the
New York rally encouraged attendees to ignore any protests.A handful of
passersby shouted at the hostage demonstrators. One man on a bike rode
past, made an obscene gesture, and shouted “Free Palestine” — the same
slogan voiced by the Colorado and Washington assailants during their
attacks. In addition to the turmoil caused by the Boulder attack, there
were several hostage developments in Gaza in the past week, when Israeli
forces recovered the bodies of three captives — Gadi Haggai, Judih
Weinstein, and Nattapong Pinta. On Saturday, Hamas released a new photo
of hostage Matan Zangauker and threatened his execution.
US said
to mull dissolving UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon-Israel
reportedly backs ending UNIFIL’s operations, considers its presence
redundant as Lebanese army beats back Hezbollah; UN set to renew
peacekeeping force’s mandate in August-By ToI Staff Today, 11:26 pm-JUN

US officials are considering pulling American support from
UNIFIL, the United Nations peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon, in a
bid to cut costs associated with its operations, Israel Hayom reported
Sunday evening, with US sources later confirming to The Times of Israel
that the option was on the table.Should the US move ahead with its
decision to pull support from the UN body, Israel will back the
decision, Israel Hayom reported, both out of a desire to align itself
with the administration of US President Donald Trump and in light of the
security establishment’s cooperation with the Lebanese army since the
ceasefire in November.According to the outlet, the presence of the
Lebanese Armed Forces in southern Lebanon has proven relatively
effective in beating back the threat of Hezbollah and keeping the terror
group from rearming itself, making redundant much of UNIFIL’s
operations in the region.Sources familiar with the matter told The Times
of Israel that the US has not yet made up its mind regarding its future
support for UNIFIL, but that it wants to see major reforms, which could
mean pulling support. As UNIFIL’s mandate is granted through a UN
Security Council resolution each year, the US could simply veto the next
resolution, due to be put forward in August.UNIFIL has been operating
in southern Lebanon since 1978, when it was created to oversee the
withdrawal of Israeli troops from the area following the end of a
conflict between the two nations. The UN peacekeeping force expanded its
mission following the 2006 Second Lebanon War between Israel and
Hezbollah, allowing peacekeepers to deploy along the Israeli border to
help the Lebanese military extend its authority into the country’s south
for the first time in decades.Aimed at ending the 2006 war, Resolution
1701 also called for a full cessation of Israeli-Hezbollah hostilities
and the disarmament of Hezbollah. UNIFIL’s mandate has been renewed
annually ever since, although critics have questioned the efficacy of
the force.Following the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, which put
an end to more than a year of hostilities with Hezbollah, including two
months of all-out war, the Lebanese army moved into southern Lebanon to
enforce the terms of the ceasefire, which itself is based on Resolution
1701.The resolution requires Hezbollah to withdraw its fighters north of
the Litani River — about 30 kilometers (19 miles) from the border — and
dismantle all military infrastructure in southern Lebanon.Lebanese
Prime Minister Nawaf Salam told the Wall Street Journal last month that
his government had achieved 80 percent of its objectives regarding the
disarmament of Hezbollah and other militias in the country’s south. At
the same time, the IDF has continued to launch targeted strikes on
Hezbollah operatives and infrastructure, alleging violations of the
truce agreement. According to the IDF, over 180 Hezbollah operatives
have been killed in that time.

A Hamas terrorist who stormed the Nova music festival
on October 7, 2023, was killed in a recent airstrike on the Gaza Strip,
the IDF said Sunday, as Israel continued to target Hamas operatives
across the Palestinian enclave amid its widened offensive.Arafat Dhiab
was killed on May 31, the military said, adding that he was a member of
Hamas’s Sheikh Radwan Battalion who infiltrated Kibbutz Re’im and
attacked the nearby Nova festival during the October 7, 2023,
onslaught. In total, 364 revelers were murdered when Hamas terrorists
stormed the overnight music festival, including many more who fled the
dancefloor to other areas near the Gaza border. Another 40 partygoers
were abducted to the Strip.Dhiab was also the chief of a Hamas-run
police station in the Strip, the IDF said.Separately, the military said
dozens of Hamas operatives were targeted in airstrikes directed by the
98th Division on Saturday during operations in Khan Younis, in southern
Gaza.In northern Gaza’s Jabalia, the IDF said several operatives had
been “eliminated” in an airstrike on a command center carried out by the
282nd Artillery Regiment. It published a video of the strike on X.Prior
to IDF confirmation of the strike, Palestinian media had reported large
blasts in the Jabalia area.Dozens more targets, including weapon
depots, tunnels and Hamas operatives, were struck throughout the day,
the military said. The IDF has warned several times in recent weeks that
the Jabalia area is a combat zone, instructing civilians to
evacuate.Amid the heavy Israeli aerial offensive, the Hamas-run Gaza
health ministry said that at least 104 people had been killed over the
past 24 hours, including several near aid hubs in central and southern
Gaza. It did not specify how all 104 had been killed or exactly
where.Figures provided by the Hamas-run health authorities in Gaza
cannot be verified and do not differentiate between combatants and
civilians.Among those reportedly killed were 10 people that the
Hamas-linked civil defense agency said were killed in an Israeli strike
in southern Gaza on Sunday morning. The Hamas-run civil defense agency in
the enclave said 10 people were killed by Israeli forces Sunday
morning.Another five were said killed and dozens more wounded around 6
a.m. as they headed to an aid distribution center run by the US-backed
Gaza Humanitarian Foundation near Rafah, said agency spokesman Mahmud
Bassal to AFP.“Around 4:30 a.m., people started gathering in the Al-Alam
area of Rafah. After about an hour and a half, hundreds moved toward
the site and the army opened fire,” eyewitness Abdallah Nour al-Din told
AFP.Asked to comment on the incident, the IDF said it fired on people
who “continued advancing in a way that endangered the soldiers” despite
warnings. It added that the area around the distribution point had been
declared an “active combat zone” at night.Bassal said another five
people, including two young girls, were killed at around 1 a.m. in a
strike that hit a tent in the Al-Mawasi displaced persons camp in
southern Gaza.Hamas carries out public execution-Earlier on Sunday, the
Defense Ministry body in charge of Israeli-Palestinian contacts
published a video of what appeared to be a Hamas execution of a
Palestinian in Gaza City over the weekend. The Coordinator of Government
Activity in the Territories shared the video on its Arabic-language
Facebook page along with a direct appeal to Gazans.“Residents of Gaza —
the Hamas terrorists and criminals are killing you and do not care about
your lives,” COGAT said. “There is no difference between a dictator who
kills in silence and a terrorist who slaughters openly — both are your
enemies and enemies of life.”Footage released by COGAT, the Coordinator
of Government Activities in the Territories, on June 8, 2025, shows an
alleged Hamas execution of a Palestinian in Gaza City (COGAT).“The
shocking documentation before you is yet another desperate, failed
attempt to sow fear among the public in order to preserve Hamas’s rule,
power, and governance, while trampling on and cynically exploiting the
residents of Gaza for the sake of the survival of Hamas’s terrorist
regime and its continued rule,” the post continued. It did not offer any
information on the circumstances of the video. The video can be watched
here, with the victim blurred out (Warning: Graphic content).
Katz
tells IDF to prevent Greta Thunberg’s boat from breaching Gaza
blockade-Defense minister urges ‘antisemitic Greta’ to ‘turn back,
because you will not reach Gaza’; activist onboard claims IDF ‘jamming’
boat’s GPS, likely due to Houthi drone precaution By Emanuel Fabian-and
AP Today, 6:17 pm-JUN 8,25
Defense Minister Israel Katz said on
Sunday that he instructed the Israel Defense Forces to prevent a
high-profile activist mission sailing to Gaza from reaching the
Strip. The Madleen boat was organized by the pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel
Freedom Flotilla Coalition in an attempt to challenge Israel’s blockade
of the Strip. Among the 12 activists on the ship are Swedish climate
activist Greta Thunberg, Brazilian activist Thiago Avila, and Rima
Hassan, a French-Palestinian European Parliament member, who has been
barred from entering Israel.“I have instructed the IDF to act so that
the Madleen does not reach Gaza. To the antisemitic Greta and her
friends, I say clearly: You should turn back, because you will not reach
Gaza,” Katz said in a statement.“The State of Israel will not allow
anyone to violate the naval blockade on Gaza, the primary purpose of
which is to prevent the transfer of weapons to Hamas, a murderous terror
organization that holds our hostages and commits war crimes,” he
added. The vessel departed Sicily last Sunday on a mission that aims to
break the naval blockade of Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid, while
raising awareness over the growing humanitarian crisis 20 months into
the war between Israel and the Hamas terror group. After a
two-and-a-half-month total blockade aimed at pressuring Hamas, Israel
started allowing some basic aid into Gaza last month, but humanitarian
workers have warned of famine unless the blockade is lifted altogether
and Israel ends its military offensive. The activists had said they
planned to reach Gaza’s territorial waters as early as Sunday. On board
the ship, Brazilian activist Avila claimed Sunday afternoon that Israel
had “jammed their communications” on the ship, after their GPS tracker
briefly showed them at Jordan’s Queen Alia Airport, miles away from
their current position in the Mediterranean Sea.“We just received some
very weird news that, according to our tracker, we are no longer 162
nautical miles from Gaza, but we are [at] Jordan airport,” he said in a
video uploaded to social media aboard the Madleen.“We know what that
means, when they start jamming our communication and messing with our
devices, it means they are preparing for an interception or an attack,”
he claimed. In recent months, the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen have
launched several drones at Israel, some of which have flown via the
Mediterranean Sea. Regardless, the GPS disruptions are unlikely to
prevent the Madleen from approaching Gaza.An attempt last month by
Freedom Flotilla to reach Gaza by sea failed after another of the
group’s vessels, which was reportedly affiliated with Hamas, was
attacked by two drones while sailing in international waters off Malta.
The group blamed Israel for the attack, which damaged the front section
of the ship. Israel did not comment on the incident.Past attempts to
break the blockade have also failed, most notably the Mavi Marmara
incident of 2010, which saw Israeli commandos board a Turkish-led
flotilla bound for Gaza. The violence that ensued when those aboard the
ship attacked the soldiers resulted in the deaths of 10 activists and
left a soldier badly wounded, sparking international condemnation and a
severe diplomatic rift between Israel and Turkey.Israel and Egypt have
imposed varying degrees of blockade on Gaza since Hamas seized power
from rival Palestinian forces in 2007 in a violent coup. Israel says it
was necessary to keep Hamas from smuggling in arms it would use to
attack the Jewish state. Critics of the blockade say it amounts to
collective punishment of Gaza’s roughly 2 million Palestinians.Israel
sealed Gaza off from all aid in the early days of the war ignited by the
Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, but later
relented under US pressure. In early March, shortly before Israel ended a
ceasefire with Hamas, it again blocked all imports, including food,
fuel and medicine.Hamas-led terrorists killed around 1,200 people,
mostly civilians, in the October 7 attack and abducted 251 hostages.
Hamas is still holding 55 hostages, 20 of whom are believed to be
alive. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 53,000 people in
the Strip have been killed or are presumed dead in the fighting so far,
though the toll cannot be verified and does not differentiate between
civilians and fighters. Israel says it has killed some 20,000 combatants
in battle as of January and another 1,600 terrorists inside Israel
during the October 7 onslaught.Israel has said it seeks to minimize
civilian fatalities and stresses that Hamas uses Gaza’s civilians as
human shields, fighting from civilian areas including homes, hospitals,
schools and mosques.

orders military to show Oct. 7 atrocity film to activists-Israeli troops

Israeli forces took control of
the Gaza-bound boat Madleen early Monday and detained the group of 12
activists who were on board, following repeated warnings to the
activists against attempting to sail to the Gaza coast, which is under a
strict maritime blockade. The activist mission organized by the
pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel Freedom Flotilla Coalition had sought to
challenge Israel’s blockade of the Gaza Strip and raise awareness about
the humanitarian crisis created by the 20-month-old war between Israel
and the Hamas terror group. It had planned to deliver a symbolic amount
of aid to the war-torn enclave. The group of activists — among whom are
Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, Brazilian activist Thiago
Avila, and French-Palestinian European Parliament Member Rima Hassan —
were to be handed over to police for deportation upon arrival at Ashdod
Port. The vessel had defied repeated warnings issued by Israel to turn
around since it departed Sicily last Sunday. The last reported location
of the vessel was at 1:15 a.m. local time, just north of Egypt’s Port
Said, around 55 nautical miles from Israeli-administered waters. At
around 3 a.m., as it approached Gaza, it was intercepted by the Navy’s
Shayetet 13 commando unit and the Snapir harbor border security unit, a
military official told The Times of Israel. Before it was boarded, it was
given a final opportunity to change course, both by the Foreign
Ministry and the Navy, but again refused.“The Gaza maritime zone remains
an active conflict area, and Hamas has previously exploited sea routes
for terrorist attacks, including the October 7th massacre,” warned the
Foreign Ministry, which provided periodic updates in English throughout
Sunday night and Monday morning.“Unauthorized attempts to breach the
blockade are dangerous, unlawful, and undermine ongoing humanitarian
efforts,” the ministry said. It called for “all actors to act
responsibly and to channel humanitarian aid through legitimate,
coordinated mechanisms, not through provocation.”It then published a
video showing an Israeli Navy soldier communicating with the boat over
loudspeaker, telling them that the maritime zone around Gaza was closed,
but that the humanitarian aid could be delivered to the Strip via
Ashdod Port.Activists on board the ship posted a video showing them
hunkering down as a drone hovered overhead.“We are right here surrounded
by Israeli drones. Please sound the alarm,” an activist is heard
saying. “Please take cover everyone. Assume positions.”‘The show is
over’The Freedom Flotilla Coalition then said on Telegram that soldiers
had boarded the yacht and that its connection had been lost.It commenced
publishing a series of pre-recorded videos of those aboard asking for
help from their home countries. The activist crew was “kidnapped by
Israeli forces,” it said.“The ship was unlawfully boarded, its unarmed
civilian crew abducted, and its life-saving cargo—including baby
formula, food and medical supplies—confiscated.”Thunberg also filmed
herself asserting that she had been “kidnapped” by “the Israeli
occupational forces.”The videos and language appeared designed to echo
the plight of Israeli hostages held by Hamas in Gaza. Several prominent
pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel Instagram accounts, with well over 1
million followers among them, appeared to further the comparison with a
joint post that said, in all-caps, “Release the hostages now” — followed
by a list of the passengers on the Madleen.Israel confirmed that it had
taken control of the boat and was towing it toward Ashdod Port in a
statement released via the Foreign Ministry, which said that the “selfie
yacht” was “safely making its way to the shores of Israel.”“The
passengers are expected to return to their home countries,” it added. The
Foreign Ministry said that the boat was carrying “less than a single
truckload of aid.” In contrast, it said, “more than 1,200 aid trucks
have entered Gaza from Israel within the past two weeks, and in
addition, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation has distributed close to 11
million meals directly to civilians in Gaza.”Israel partially restarted
aid operations in the Gaza Strip last month, allowing some basic
supplies to enter again, following a two-and-a-half-month total
blockade. Humanitarian workers have warned of famine unless the blockade
is lifted altogether and Israel ends its military offensive.“There are
ways to deliver aid to the Gaza Strip — they do not involve Instagram
selfies,” the Foreign Ministry said. “The tiny amount of aid that was on
the yacht and not consumed by the ‘celebrities’ will be transferred to
Gaza through real humanitarian channels.”It published a video a short
while later showing the detained activists being escorted to the Ashdod
Port, confirming that the passengers were “safe and unharmed” and had
been provided with sandwiches and water.“The show is over,” it said.In
an apparent attempt to ease concerns over the well-being of the
Madleen’s crew, it said on X that Thunberg was “in good spirits,” and
shared a photo of the climate activist smiling tightly as she was
offered a plastic-wrapped pastrami sandwich by a soldier.Later on
Monday, however, Israeli rights group Adalah said it had sent a letter
to Israeli authorities demanding information on the activists’
whereabouts and their access to legal counsel and representation. The
Israeli Arab rights group noted that Israeli forces had detained the
flotilla in international waters “where Israel has no legal jurisdiction
or authority,” thus violating international humanitarian law.“Adalah
will pursue legal actions to secure the activists’ safety and release,”
it said.Defense Minister Israel Katz, meanwhile, praised the Israeli
navy for its swift takeover of the ship. Footage from before soldiers
boarded showed that the activists planned to make a show of not putting
up resistance.Katz then announced that he had ordered the military to
screen a video showing atrocities committed on October 7, 2023, to the
detained activists once they had safely arrived at port. The harrowing
43-minute video produced by the Israel Defense Forces spokesperson’s
office shows uncensored, difficult-to-watch footage of people being
massacred and bodies mutilated during the onslaught, much of it taken
from terrorists’ bodycams.“It’s appropriate that Greta the antisemite
and her Hamas-supporting friends should see exactly who is the terror
group Hamas that they support and act on behalf of, what atrocious acts
they carried out on women, the elderly and kids, and who Israel is
fighting for its defense against,” the defense minister said.Israel has
shown the atrocities video, titled “Bearing Witness,” to journalists and
public figures in limited screenings around the world as part of its
efforts to rally support for its war on Hamas, though its use of the
footage has occasionally garnered controversy. While ultimately
intercepted, the Madleen fared better than a different boat dispatched
by the Freedom Flotilla a month prior. The vessel, which was reportedly
affiliated with Hamas, was attacked by two drones while sailing in
international waters off Malta. The group blamed Israel for the attack,
which damaged the front section of the ship. Israel did not comment on
the incident.Past attempts to break the blockade have also failed, most
notably the Mavi Marmara incident of 2010, which saw Israeli commandos
board a Turkish-led flotilla bound for Gaza. The violence that ensued
when those aboard the ship attacked the soldiers resulted in the deaths
of 10 activists and left a soldier badly wounded, sparking international
condemnation and a severe diplomatic rift between Israel and
Turkey.Israel and Egypt have imposed varying degrees of blockade on Gaza

violent coup. Israel says it was necessary to keep Hamas from smuggling
in arms it would use to attack the Jewish state. Critics of the blockade
say it amounts to collective punishment of Gaza’s roughly 2 million
Palestinians.Hamas-led terrorists killed around 1,200 people, mostly

Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 54,000 people in the Strip

the toll cannot be verified and does not differentiate between civilians
and fighters. Israel says it has killed some 20,000 combatants in
battle as of January and another 1,600 terrorists inside Israel during
the October 7 onslaught. Israel’s toll in the ground offensive against
Hamas in Gaza and in military operations along the border with the Strip
stands at 418.Israel has said it seeks to minimize civilian fatalities
and stresses that Hamas uses Gaza’s civilians as human shields, fighting
from civilian areas including homes, hospitals, schools and mosques. On
Sunday, the IDF showed local and international reporters a tunnel
complex and Hamas command center under Khan Younis’s European Hospital
in which it said Hamas military chief Mohammed Sinwar and other Hamas
commanders were killed last month.
Violent protests in Los
Angeles after Trump deploys National Guard on streets-Thousands
demonstrate, blocking major highway and setting self-driving cars on
fire; US president urges local police to make more arrests and ‘bring in
the troops’By JASON DEAREN, jaimie ding and Jake Offenhartz Today,
11:40 am-JUN 9,25
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tensions in Los Angeles
escalated Sunday as thousands of protesters took to the streets in
response to US President Donald Trump’s extraordinary deployment of the
National Guard, blocking off a major freeway and setting self-driving
cars on fire as law enforcement used tear gas, rubber bullets and flash
bangs to control the crowd. Many protesters dispersed as evening fell and
police declared an unlawful assembly, a precursor to officers moving in
and making arrests of people who don’t leave. Some of those remaining
threw objects at police from behind a makeshift barrier that spanned the
width of a street and others hurled chunks of concrete, rocks, electric
scooters and fireworks at California Highway Patrol officers and their
vehicles parked on the closed southbound 101 Freeway. Officers ran under
an overpass to take cover.Sunday’s protests in Los Angeles, a sprawling
city of 4 million people, were centered in several blocks of downtown.
It was the third and most intense day of demonstrations against Trump’s
immigration crackdown in the region, as the arrival of around 300 Guard
troops spurred anger and fear among many residents. The Guard was
deployed specifically to protect federal buildings, including the
downtown detention center where protesters concentrated.Los Angeles
Police Chief Jim McDonnell said officers were “overwhelmed” by the
remaining protesters. He said they included regular agitators who show
up at demonstrations to cause trouble.Several dozen people were arrested
throughout the weekend of protest. One was detained Sunday for throwing
a Molotov cocktail at police, and another for ramming a motorcycle into
a line of officers.Trump responded to McDonnell on Truth Social,
telling him to arrest protesters in face masks.“Looking really bad in
L.A. BRING IN THE TROOPS!!!” he wrote.Clashes escalate as National Guard
troops arrive-Starting in the morning, the troops stood shoulder to
shoulder, carrying long guns and riot shields as protesters shouted
“shame” and “go home.” After some closely approached the Guard members,
another set of uniformed officers advanced on the group, shooting
smoke-filled canisters into the street.Minutes later, the Los Angeles
Police Department fired rounds of crowd-control munitions to disperse
the protesters, who they said were assembled unlawfully. Much of the
group then moved to block traffic on the 101 Freeway until state patrol
officers cleared them from the roadway by late afternoon.Nearby, at
least four self-driving Waymo cars were set on fire, sending large
plumes of black smoke into the sky and exploding intermittently as the
electric vehicles burned. By evening, police had issued an unlawful
assembly order shutting down several blocks of downtown Los
Angeles.Flash bangs echoed out every few seconds into the
evening.Governor says Guard not needed-Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom
requested Trump remove the Guard members in a letter Sunday afternoon,
calling their deployment a “serious breach of state sovereignty.” He was
in Los Angeles meeting with local law enforcement and officials. The
deployment appeared to be the first time in decades that a state’s
National Guard was activated without a request from its governor, a
significant escalation against those who have sought to hinder the
administration’s mass deportation efforts.Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor
Karen Bass blamed the increasingly aggressive protests on Trump’s
decision to deploy the Guard, calling it a move designed to inflame
tensions. They’ve both urged protesters to remain peaceful.“What we’re
seeing in Los Angeles is chaos that is provoked by the administration,”
she said in an afternoon press conference. “This is about another
agenda, this isn’t about public safety.”But McDonnell, the LAPD chief,
said the protests were following a similar pattern for episodes of civil
unrest, with tensions ramping up in the second and third days.He pushed
back against claims by the Trump administration that the LAPD had
failed to help federal authorities when protests broke out Friday after a
series of immigration raids. His department responded as quickly as it
could, and had not been notified in advance of the raids and therefore
was not pre-positioned for protests, he said.Newsom, meanwhile, has
repeatedly said that California authorities had the situation under
control. He mocked Trump for posting a congratulatory message to the
Guard on social media before troops had even arrived in Los Angeles, and
said on MSNBC that Trump never floated deploying the Guard during a
Friday phone call. He called Trump a “stone cold liar.”The admonishments
did not deter the administration.“It’s a bald-faced lie for Newsom to
claim there was no problem in Los Angeles before President Trump got
involved,” White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson said in a
statement.Deployment follows days of protest-The arrival of the National
Guard followed two days of protests that began Friday in downtown Los
Angeles before spreading on Saturday to Paramount, a heavily Latino city
south of the city, and neighboring Compton.Federal agents arrested
immigrants in LA’s fashion district, in a Home Depot parking lot and at
several other locations on Friday. The next day, they were staging at a
Department of Homeland Security office near another Home Depot in
Paramount, which drew out protesters who suspected another raid. Federal
authorities later said there was no enforcement activity at that Home
Depot. The weeklong tally of immigrant arrests in the LA area climbed
above 100, federal authorities said. Many more people were arrested
while protesting, including a prominent union leader who was accused of
impeding law enforcement. The protests did not reach the size of past
demonstrations that brought the National Guard to Los Angeles, including
the Watts and Rodney King riots, and the 2020 protests against police
violence, in which Newsom requested the assistance of federal troops. The
last time the National Guard was activated without a governor’s
permission was in 1965, when President Lyndon B. Johnson sent troops to
protect a civil rights march in Alabama, according to the Brennan Center
for Justice.Trump says there will be ‘very strong law and order’In a
directive Saturday, Trump invoked a legal provision allowing him to
deploy federal service members when there is “a rebellion or danger of a
rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United
States.”He said he had authorized the deployment of 2,000 members of the
National Guard.Trump told reporters as he prepared to board Air Force
One in Morristown, New Jersey, Sunday that there were “violent people”
in Los Angeles “and they’re not gonna get away with it.”Asked if he
planned to send US troops to Los Angeles, Trump replied: “We’re gonna
have troops everywhere. We’re not going to let this happen to our
country.” He didn’t elaborate.About 500 Marines stationed at Twentynine
Palms, about 125 miles (200 kilometers) east of Los Angeles, were in a
“prepared to deploy status” Sunday afternoon, according to the US

Statement by Prime Minister Carney on Eid al-Adha-June 6, 2025-Ottawa, Ontario
“Today,
Muslims in Canada and around the world mark Eid al-Adha. This day holds
profound significance for Muslim communities, marking the end of the
Hajj pilgrimage. “Eid is a celebration of service and a time of faith,
family, and charity. Eid reminds us that we are bound by a common
humanity and a sacred obligation to take care of ourselves and of each
other. “This year, that message carries a heavy weight as Eid falls on
the fourth anniversary of the terrorist attack against the Afzaal family
in London, Ontario. As we honour Salman, Madiha, Yumna, and Talat, we
affirm our work to protect against hate and defend Canadians’ ability to
freely practise their faith.“I hope Canadians celebrating Eid gather
with their loved ones on this blessed day. From my family to yours, Eid
Mubarak.”
What is Eid al-Adha? Why Canada’s prime minister says
the Muslim holiday carries ‘heavy weight’ this year-Eid al-Adha falls on

In a statement shared Friday, June 6, Prime Minister
Mark Carney joined Canada’s Muslim community in celebrating Eid
al-Adha, the Muslim holiday that marks the “Feast of Sacrifice.”“Eid
reminds us that we are bound by a common humanity and a sacred
obligation to take care of ourselves and of each other,” Carney said in
the statement. Like Carney, others including Ontario Premiere Doug Ford,
issued a statement marking the beginning of Eid al-Adha.Commemorating
the 4th anniversary of terrorist attack in London Ontario-Carney
acknowledged this year’s Eid falls on the fourth anniversary of the
terrorist attack against the Afzaal family in London.“This year, that
message carries a heavy weight as Eid falls on the fourth anniversary of
the terrorist attack against the Afzaal family in London, Ontario,” he
said.“As we honour Salman, Madiha, Yumna, and Talat, we affirm our work
to protect against hate and defend Canadians’ ability to freely practise
their faith.”In 2021, members of the Afzaal family were killed when a
driver drove a truck into the family who was out for a walk. The only
survivor of the attack was Afzaal’s nine-year old son who was left
orphaned. At the Eid al-Adha celebration in Ottawa, Carney spoke to the
Muslim Association of Canada about the “hatred fuelled by ignorance”
that he said is still a lived reality for many Muslim Canadians.“We
mourn the loss today of Salman, Madiha, Yumnah and Talat, members of the
Afzaal family, who four years ago this day in London were victims of a
heinous act of terrorism,” he said in his speech at the podium. What is
Eid al-Adha?Eid al-Adha or the Festival of sacrifice is one of the main
holidays in the Muslim calendar alongside Eid al-Fitr.It is celebrated
by Muslims all over the world and begins on the 10th day of Dhul Hijah,
the final and twelfth month of the Islamic calendar. It marks the
culmination of the Hajj rites, the pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca
in Saudi Arabia which every Muslim must perform at least once in their
lifetime, according to Islamic Relief Canada. In a post, the Muslim
Association of Canada announced that this year, Eid al-Adha is to be
celebrated on June 6 (Friday). The holiday is celebrated for three days
and just like Eid ul-Fitr, it starts by performing a communal prayer at
daybreak on the first day.Why is it known as the Feast of Sacrifice?
During the festival, some families will sacrifice a ritually acceptable
animal — usually a goat, sheep, cow or camel to honour the story of
Prophet Ibrahim. According to Islamic beliefs, the Prophet was tested by
God and asked to sacrifice his son. As he prepared to obey, God sent a
ram to be sacrificed instead. The story shows Prophet Ibrahim’s
willingness to do what was asked even though it was difficult. “The
festival reminds all Muslims of this great act of faith and
obedience.”During the holiday, Qurbani meat from the animal sacrifice is
shared with family, friends and those who are in need, MWC said.Aside
from going to local mosques for Eid prayers, many Muslims also dress in
new clothes and exchange gifts during this holiday. Zakat or charity is
also a big part of the celebration and many Muslims make donations to
feed families in need during Eid al-Adha.Loraine Centeno is a reporter
