Netanyahu: I want to end war ASAP, told IDF to shorten timeline for capturing Gaza City By Nava Freiberg-AUG 10,25
Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says that the security cabinet’s approval
of a plan to take over Gaza City is a result of Hamas’s “continued
refusal” to compromise in negotiations for a truce, and rejects claims
that the plan will aimlessly prolong the war.Speaking before live TV
cameras and reporters during a press conference for local media at his
Jerusalem office, Netanyahu says that, “After months of fruitless
negotiations, it has become clear beyond doubt that Hamas simply is not
interested in a deal. Hamas has clung to this refusal.”Hamas “has raised
impossible conditions — not only in our view, but also in the view of
the United States,” he charges, saying “They include, among other
things, a complete withdrawal from the Gaza Strip — including from the
Philadelphi Corridor — which would allow the free smuggling of weapons;
the release of imprisoned terrorists, these monsters; and a demand for
binding international guarantees that would prevent the IDF from
resuming combat. These are terms of surrender that no responsible
government would agree to accept — and certainly I will not accept
them.”“Hamas has deceived us. Therefore, I have become convinced that
the only way to return all our hostages is to defeat Hamas,” says
Netanyahu. He adds that in the security cabinet’s discussions, “an
alternative was also raised — to hold our position while encircling the
remaining Hamas strongholds and carrying out raids. After an in-depth
discussion, an overwhelming majority of cabinet members concluded that
by this method, we would achieve neither victory nor the return of our
hostages.”The decision for the expanded takeover was achieved “despite
immense pressures from home and abroad — pressures to stop the war,”
which Netanyahu says existed “even before we entered Rafah” last
year. The premier says that if he had yielded “to those pressures,” Hamas
leaders Yahya Sinwar and Ismail Haniyeh “would still be ruling in Gaza,
[former Hezbollah leader Hassan] Nasrallah would be in Lebanon, [former
Syrian president Bashar] al-Assad in Syria, and Iran today would be
racing toward a nuclear weapon.”“I am determined to end the war with our
victory, and precisely because I am aware of the great effort of our
reservists, I want to end the war as quickly as possible. That is why I
have instructed the IDF to shorten the timetable for taking control of
Gaza City,” he says, adding, “I do not intend to perpetuate Hamas — I
intend to defeat Hamas.”
Katz: IDF to remain in north West Bank
refugee camps until year’s end at least-‘Today there is no terror in the
camps,’ says defense minister; Israel nabs 3 suspects accused of
planning major terror attack; Arab Israeli man said killed by troops in
Jericho-By Emanuel Fabian,Charlie Summers and ToI Staff Today, 7:47
pm-AUG 10,25
Defense Minister Israel Katz said Sunday that IDF
troops will remain deployed to northern West Bank refugee camps at least
until the end of the year, committing to the continuation of Israeli
military presence in the densely populated Palestinian towns for several
more months.Meanwhile Israeli security forces said they had arrested
three West Bank residents who had been planning a major terror attack in
Israel, as well as attacks on security forces in the West Bank.In
January, the military launched an offensive against terror operatives in
the northern West Bank. The offensive, dubbed “Operation Iron Wall,”
began in the Jenin refugee camp, adjacent to the city of Jenin, and
later expanded to include refugee camps near the city of Tulkarem in the
western West Bank — the Tulkarem and Nur Shams camps. The offensive
followed a spike in West Bank violence, following October 7, 2023. Since
the Hamas onslaught, troops have arrested some 6,000 wanted
Palestinians across the West Bank, including more than 2,350 affiliated
with Hamas.According to Katz, the Jenin, Tulkarem, and Nur Shams camps
were hotbeds of terror, funded, and armed by Iran, to act as another
front against Israel. There are 20 historical refugee camps in the West
Bank, all of which were established shortly after 1948, housing
Palestinians who fled or were expelled during the War of Independence
from homes located in what is now the State of Israel. Over the years,
these camps have evolved into densely populated and enclosed
neighborhoods. In the past eight months, Katz said, the IDF has carried
out an “intensive” offensive, during which residents of the camps were
evacuated, gunmen were killed, and infrastructure used by terror groups
were destroyed.“The IDF will remain inside the camps at this stage, at
least until the end of the year, under my directives,” Katz said in his
statement.“Today, there is no terror in the camps, and the scope of
terror alerts in Judea and Samaria [West Bank] has dropped by 80
percent,” he added. In May, the military reported that it had killed over
100 terror operatives and arrested around 320 wanted suspects, seizing
approximately 450 weapons in the northern West Bank. The IDF has not
updated its figures since then, but operations have continued. In the
same month, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, said that
approximately 40,000 people had been displaced from the camps by the IDF
operations and relocated to nearby villages or the adjacent cities of
Jenin or Tulkarem. In July, UNRWA said that mass displacement in the West
Bank had hit levels not seen since the start of Israel’s military
control of the Palestinian territory nearly 60 years ago, claiming that
“about 30,000 Palestinians remain forcibly displaced.”During the same
period, Israeli security forces issued demolition orders for about 1,400
homes in the northern West Bank, a UN spokesman said, describing the
figures as “alarming.”Terror suspects arrested-Also on Sunday, police
officers and Shin Bet agents nabbed three people, including a father and
son, suspected of plotting attacks against Israeli civilians and
security forces. The suspects — all currently in custody — planned to
stage a bombing attack at a checkpoint in northern Jerusalem,
assassinate someone they believed to be an Israeli Air Force pilot, and
shoot up a nightclub in central Israel, police said.A senior police
investigator told Ynet that the probe represents “one of the most
serious cases we’ve handled in the unit,” saying the arrest of the three
suspects prevented a mass casualty attack. The investigation was opened
after the father, who resides with his son in Kufr Aqab in East
Jerusalem, reached out to an undercover cop with an offer to sell him
explosives meant for terror attacks. The father and son had been employed
as cooks at a restaurant and a retirement home in central Israel,
according to Ynet. The outlet reported that the father is an Arab Muslim
who married and had a son with a Jewish Israeli woman. The two have
since divorced. The detained son, Jewish by virtue of his mother,
reportedly converted to Islam after he was disqualified from serving in
the IDF for reasons that remain unclear. The pair was arrested by the
Jerusalem District Police’s Investigations and Intelligence unit in late
June. Officers seized bombmaking components, ammunition and
ready-to-use pipe bombs when raiding apartments that the two had stayed
in, police said. The third suspect, a resident of East Jerusalem in his
20s, was arrested on suspicion of preparing explosives with the father
and hiding them in his home. He also planned to attack security forces,
officials allege.A prosecutor’s declaration was filed against the three,
and they will be charged with security offenses in the coming days, law
enforcement announced. In another development in the West Bank, an Arab
Israeli man from Nazareth was shot dead by IDF troops in the city of
Jericho on Saturday night, local Arab outlets reported on
Sunday.Abdallah Atiyat, 24, had been visiting his aunt in Jericho over
the weekend when he was shot in the head amid clashes during an army
raid in the city’s downtown area, according to the Arab Israeli radio
station Radio Shams. In an interview with the station, Atiyat’s mother,
Amina, said that her son had been struggling to get back to Nazareth
amid widespread closures due to the raid. He was reportedly killed while
searching for a taxi to take him home.He was taken in critical
condition to a hospital in Jericho, then shuttled to Hadassah Hospital
in Jerusalem, where he succumbed to his wounds.Responding to a request
for comment, the IDF told The Times of Israel that its forces had been
operating in the Jericho region Saturday night, when Atiyat was
killed.During the army operation, IDF forces “identified a suspect
approaching them who posed a threat. The forces fired at the suspect, a
hit was identified and the incident is under investigation,” said a
spokesperson.Violence in the West Bank has spiked since the Hamas
onslaught of October 7, 2023, which sparked the war in Gaza.According to
the Palestinian Authority health ministry, more than 950 West Bank
Palestinians have been killed in that time. The IDF says the vast
majority of them were gunmen killed in exchanges of fire, rioters who
clashed with troops, or terrorists carrying out attacks.During the same
period, 53 people, including Israeli security personnel, have been
killed in terror attacks in Israel and the West Bank. Another eight
members of the security forces were killed in clashes with terror
operatives in the West Bank.

Judea
and Samaria Terror Threat Plummets 80% Amid IDF’s Aggressive
Campaign-Israeli Defense Minister reports dramatic 80% reduction in
Judea and Samaria terror threats due to aggressive IDF campaign
targeting Iranian-backed militant strongholds in refugee camps.Lara
Sukster Mosheyof-AUG 10, 2025 10:23
Israel Defense Minister
Israel Katz on Sunday announced a dramatic decline in terror threats in
the Judea and Samaria area, claiming an 80% drop thanks to a new IDF
policy focused on decisive, sustained offensive operations.Katz pointed
to refugee camps in Jenin, Tulkarm, and Nur Shams as key centers of
terrorism: “hotbeds financed, armed, and guided by Iran,” forming part
of the so-called “Axis of Resistance” against Israel. These areas, he
said, served as launchpads for attacks across the region. In response,
Katz said the IDF adopted a “powerful offensive” approach: evacuating
residents, eliminating terrorists, dismantling terror infrastructure,
and maintaining a military presence in these zones at least through the
end of 2025.“This is the right model to combat terror: strike it
decisively and pursue it relentlessly across all fronts,” he
emphasized.Since January, the IDF’s broad Operation Iron Wall in Jenin
has targeted terror cells linked to Iran, working closely with the Shin
Bet. The operation included neutralizing multiple terrorists and
systematically undermining militant networks. In an unusual measure to
curb violence, the IDF also announced last month that wearing face masks
outdoors in the West Bank is now punishable by up to six months in
prison. The regulation targets terrorists and extremists who use masks
to conceal identities during attacks.Katz’s statements highlight a
toughening stance by Israeli security forces aiming to restore order and
suppress terrorism in a volatile region. The coming months will reveal
whether this strategy maintains its momentum and significantly reshapes
the security landscape in the Judea and Samaria area.
World Goes
Crazy After Netanyahu's Cabinet Approves Gaza Occupation Plan-Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s push to fully occupy Gaza has triggered
global condemnation and fears of a humanitarian crisis, with Arab
leaders, the UN, and hostage families warning of deadly
consequences.Gila Isaacson-AUG 8, 2025 07:42
In the shadowed
corridors of international diplomacy, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu's bold declaration to seize full military control of Gaza has
unleashed a torrent of condemnation, with world leaders warning of dire
humanitarian fallout and the potential slaughter of remaining hostages.
As Israel's cabinet approves a strategy to "defeat Hamas and occupy
Gaza," the move, defying military advice and public sentiment, has drawn
sharp rebukes from neighbors and allies alike, exposing the fragile
fault lines of Middle East peace efforts. The plan, greenlit overnight
despite opposition from IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, aims to disarm
Hamas, retrieve all 50 hostages (at least 20 believed alive),
demilitarize the Strip, and install an alternative civilian
administration. Netanyahu's office insists it's not annexation but
security necessity, with forces prepared to storm Gaza City while aiding
civilians outside combat zones. Yet, this escalation, amid stalled
talks and over 40,000 reported Palestinian deaths, has been met with
alarm.Jordan led the charge, branding the proposal "unacceptable" and
calling for urgent international intervention to halt it. A senior
Jordanian official stressed that Arab nations would back only
Palestinian-agreed solutions, insisting security be managed through
"legitimate Palestinian institutions." The rebuke underscores Amman's
role as a key mediator, hosting millions of Palestinian refugees and
guarding holy sites in Jerusalem.Ready for more? The United Nations
echoed the concern, deeming reports of expanded operations "deeply
alarming" and highlighting severe humanitarian risks in a region already
teetering on famine. UN officials fear mass displacement of Gaza's 1.2
million residents in central areas, with no viable evacuation
zones.Palestinian authorities were unsparing, labeling the plan a "trial
balloon" and demanding global action to thwart it. Senior Hamas
official Osama Hamdan accused the US and Western powers of "ignoring
Israeli crimes," pinning blame on Netanyahu for endangering hostages
through reckless escalation. "This will lead to their inevitable death,"
Hamdan warned, claiming captors have orders to "neutralize" them under
siege.Egypt amplified the hostage peril in a stark alert to Washington,
cautioning that occupation "will inevitably lead to the death of the
Israeli hostages." President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi requested a direct
call with US President Donald Trump to discuss, per a report in
Hezbollah-linked Al-Akhbar. Cairo's diplomat asserted: "The captors have
received instructions to 'neutralize' them if they enter a siege." This
plea reflects Egypt's mediation role and fears of regional instability
spilling over its borders.US President Trump has withheld explicit
endorsement, with Netanyahu quoting him as saying, "I know Israel will
do what it has to do." The White House offered no immediate comment,
signaling a hands-off approach amid domestic pressures.Saudi Arabia
condemns Israel’s decision to take over Gaza, accusing it of starvation
crimes, brutality, and ethnic cleansing. Jordan issued a similar
statement earlier, as reported y Open Source Intel. As protests erupt in
Israel and families decry the move as a "death sentence" for captives,
Netanyahu's gamble risks isolating Israel further. In a war of
attrition, the true cost may be measured not in territory, but in lives
lost and alliances fractured. But, to be fair, he has tried the route of
releasing thousands of Hamas prisoners, acquiescing to many of their
insane demands and sending his negotiating team to Doha for weeks on
end, to no avail. In response to his generosity, he has been met with
Hamas sending video footage of starving hostages Evyatar David and Rom
Braslavksi to the point of death. What choice does he really have?
PM Netanyahu at a press conference for foreign media-Type:Government:The 37th Government-Publish Date:10.08.2025
“Good
afternoon. I'm glad you came here, because I'd like to take the
opportunity to puncture the lies and tell the truth.  The truth is,
Hamas still has thousands of armed terrorists in Gaza. It vows to repeat
the October 7 massacre and to do so again and again. It openly
professes its goal to destroy the State of Israel. It subjugates Gazans,
it steals their food, it shoots them when they try to move to safe
zones. And I think it’s instructive that now, many Gazansare fighting
back. They are begging us, and they're begging the world:“Free us, Free
us, and free Gaza from Hamas”No nation can accept a genocidal terrorist
organization, an organization committed to its annihilation a stone’s
throw from its citizens. Our goal is not to occupy Gaza. Our goal is to
free Gaza, free it from Hamas terrorists. The war can end tomorrow if
Gaza, or rather if Hamas lays down its arms and releases all the
remaining hostages.Gaza will be demilitarized, Israel will have
overriding security responsibilities.A security zone will be established
on Gaza’s border with Israel to prevent future terrorist incursions.A
civilian administration will be established in Gaza that will seek to
live in peace with Israel. That’s our plan for the day after Hamas. And
let me summarize it: Five principles for concluding the war:One, Hamas
Disarmed. Second, all hostages freed. Third, Gaze Demilitarized. Fourth,
Israel has overriding security control. And five, Non-Israeli, peaceful
civil administration, by that I mean a civilian administration that
doesn’t educate its children for terror, that doesn't pay terrorists,
and doesn’t launch terrorist attacks against Israel, that’s what we want
to see in Gaza. So, its neither Hamas or the PA. That's our plan. Given
Hamas’s refusal to lay down its arms, Israel has no choice but to
finish the job andcomplete the defeat of Hamas. Now, we've done a great
deal. We have about 70 to 75 percent of Gaza under Israeli control,
military control. But we have two remaining strongholds. Okay? These are
Gaza City and the Central Camps and Moasi. That's roughly,
schematically, presented here, but it's fairly accurate.Last Thursday,
Israel's cabinet, security cabinet, instructed the IDF to dismantle the
two remaining Hamas strongholds in Gaza City and the Central Camps.
Contrary to false claims, this is the best way to end the war, and the
best way to end it speedily. We will do so by first enabling the
civilian population to safely leave the combat areas to designated safe
zones. In these safe zones they will be given ample food, water and
medical care.As we have done before. And again, contrary to false claims,
our policy throughout the war has been to prevent a humanitarian
crisis, While Hamas’s policy has been to create it.Since the beginning
of the war, Israel has let in close to 2 million tons of aid!I know of
no other army that has enabled such aid to go to the civilian population
in enemy territory. Now, if we had a starvation policy, no one in Gaza
would have survived after two years of war.But our policy has been the
exact opposite. We’ve let in, as I said, almost 2 million tons of aid and
sent millions of text messages, millions of phone calls, to Gazans to
get out of harm’s way.Yet in the last few months, Hamas has violently
looted the aid trucks meant to get to Palestinian civilians. They
deliberately created a shortage of supply. And the UN consistently
refused, until recently, to distribute the thousands of trucks that we
let into Gaza through the Kerem Shalom crossing. So, the problem is,
we've had tons of uncollected food rotting on the Gazan side of the
border because the UN was, and still is, unwilling to deliver all of
it.Here are the tons and tons, and tons, of humanitarian aid that Israel
led in to the Gazan side of the Kerem Shalom Crossing, just sitting
there, because it's not distributed. So now, we are going to go around
this obstacle, we are going around it, by doing these three things:1.
Designating safe corridors for humanitarian aid distribution – (that's
showing the problem. Not showing the solution, but here it is).First,
designating rather safe corridors for aid distribution. You can go, you
can drive trucks there, and you'll be safe. 2. Increasing the number of
safe distribution points managed by the Gazan Humanitarian
Foundations.3. Air drops.  That's air drops done by the Israeli Air
Force and we're inviting others to join us.The result has been a
humanitarian surge, which we are coordinating with President Trump and
his team, and hundreds of trucks have gone in, in recent days. This is
preventing hunger. But it's not prevented the global campaign of lies
that we have all witnessed. So in Gaza, despite Hamas’s obstacles, two
million people are now getting access to humanitarian aid. But I'll tell
you who isn't.The only ones that are being deliberately starved in Gaza
are our hostages. This is Evyatar David, look at his hand and his arm.
He's being deliberately starved by these Hamas monsters. And look at the
Hamas capturer, look at the difference. He's eating, and he's eating
well. The purpose of this news conference is to puncture the lies and
spread the truth. But that distortion has been propelled around the
earth, almost the way that the Jewish people, who are maligned in the
Middle Ages, every massacre of the Jewish people was proceeded by
massive vilification. We were spreading, we were said to be spreading
vermin to Christian society, we were said to be poisoning the wells, we
were said to slaughter Christian children for their blood. And as these
lies spread around the globe, they were followed by horrific, horrific
massacres, pogroms, displacements, finally culminating the worst
massacre of them all – the Holocaust.Today the Jewish state is being
maligned in a similar way. Everything that I told you, could be verified
easily, but it hasn't. And the international press has bought hook line
and sinker – Hamas's statistics, Hamas claims, Hamas forgeries, and
Hamas photographs, for example, these three children. The first one, is
Osama Alakub, he's in Italy getting treatment, because Israel got him
out, that's what he looks like today. He has a genetic disease that
damages the lungs and digestive system. It makes it hard to absorb
nutrients and gain weight. Okay? So, Israel facilitated Osama's travel
to Italy, where he got the medical aid that transformed his position.
The second one, is Abdul Khad Faumi. He suffers from a genetic
neurological disorder – spinal muscular atrophy. A degenerative
condition that causes muscle wasting weakness and severe weight loss,
unrelated to nutrition. This was the real cause of his frail appearance,
not starvation. In fact, he was treated in Israel in 2018, doesn't help
because it's a congenital disease and it defies most treatment at
least. The third one, is the most celebrated one. This is a New York
Times cover photo. It's on the front page, of Muhamad Zakaria Aub and
his mother. Muhamad Zakaria Aub is suffering from genetic illness which
you're familiar with, it's called cerebral palsy. His mother is well
fed, and his brother is healthy. I'm looking right now into the
possibility of a governmental suit against the New York Times, because
this is outrageous. Of course, the correction was postage size, I don't
know where it was buried. But this is outrageous. These are the three
most celebrated photos, and they're all fake. It's the kind of malignant
lies that were leveled at the Jewish people in the Middle Ages we won't
suffer, we won't allow it to go unchallenged, and this is the purpose
of this conference. I hope that you open your eyes to a simple fact -
Hamas lies”.

Analysis-Germany’s
arms embargo signals sharp downturn in relations with Israel-Chancellor
Merz’s decision to restrict sales of offensive weapons to Israel
appears to have caught Jerusalem off guard. Where things go from here
may depend on Jerusalem’s response
By Tal Schneider-Today, 7:39 pm-AUG 10,25
Twenty-two
months into the war in Gaza, Israel’s foreign relations appear to have
deteriorated further, with German Chancellor Friedreich Merz’s recent
announcement of an arms embargo threatening to put the entire Israeli
defense industry in a challenging position. The German halt on selling
Israel offensive weapons that could be used in Gaza comes as Israeli
citizens, some with no connection to the Gaza war, have been facing
threats in multiple countries.Israeli companies have suffered property
damage and anti-Israel demonstrations take place daily around the world.
Meanwhile, Israel’s international trade relations are under
pressure. The defense industry remains the country’s strongest export
sector, but now it too faces potential disruption. The announcement from
Germany – which provides nearly a third of Israel’s arms imports –
caught Jerusalem by surprise, as it was not preceded by an explicit
warning from Berlin.Whether Netanyahu himself understood Germany’s level
of frustration prior to the announcement of its decision is unclear.
Critics argue that his office has struggled to handle the international
arena as the war has dragged on, with his attention divided between
foreign relations and maintaining his governing coalition.Defense trade
is deeply affected by international politics and perceptions, and global
press coverage of humanitarian conditions in Gaza plays a significant
role. International leaders have strongly objected to Israel’s plans to
evacuate 800,000 Gazans from Gaza City and conduct a major offensive
there. The embargo by Germany, Israel’s close ally, could encourage other
European capitals to halt arms sales, and possibly to stop buying
Israeli-made weaponry.Merz’s announcement was part of a swift wave of
international backlash after the Israeli cabinet’s vote last week to
approve the Gaza City operation. In Germany, the speed and tone of the
reaction marked a significant departure from the country’s prior policy
of strong support for Israel, born of its sense of historical
responsibility following the Holocaust. Up until now, Germany was
Israel’s second-largest arms supplier, after the United States. The
conservative Merz had himself previously been a prominent critic of his
predecessor, Olaf Scholz, for what he said was insufficient backing for
Israel.Unlike neighboring France, Germany does not face internal
pressure from a large Muslim population to criticize Israel. The
previous governing coalition included the Green Party, which held the
foreign ministry and had pressed for stricter compliance with
international law in arms exports. That coalition left office earlier
this year.German arms deliveries to Israel dropped sharply in the war’s
second year, with analysts saying the decline could be interpreted as a
signal of German dissatisfaction — though Israeli officials did not
previously treat it as such. When asked in late May about Spain and
others halting arms sales to Israel, German Foreign Minister Johann
Wadephul said his country “is always obliged to assist Israel in
guaranteeing its security.”But that same day, Merz told Germany’s WDR
public radio, “Honestly speaking, I no longer understand what the
Israeli army is now doing in the Gaza Strip, with what goal.”He added,
“The way in which the civilian population has been affected, as has been
increasingly the case in recent days, can no longer be justified by a
fight against Hamas terrorism.”Now, Germany’s qualms have led to real,
harmful action. On Friday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Merz
to convey his disappointment. “Instead of supporting Israel’s just war
against Hamas, which carried out the most horrific attack against the
Jewish people since the Holocaust, Germany is rewarding Hamas terrorism
by embargoing arms to Israel,” his office said in a statement issued in
English.Netanyahu also told Merz that Israel’s goal “is not to take over
Gaza, but to free Gaza from Hamas and enable a peaceful government to
be established there.”At the same time, the prime minister has refused
to lay out a plan for enabling such a government to be formed. Some
diplomats saw Netanyahu’s public comments to Merz as more of a moral
admonition than a calculated effort to bridge differences. Despite the
Holocaust’s role in shaping German policy toward Israel, a defense
industry figure involved in procurement between the countries told The
Times of Israel that Netanyahu’s invocation of the Holocaust in this
context risked further complicating relations.“If Jerusalem starts
invoking the Holocaust repeatedly and attacking the chancellor over
this, it means Israel is not interested in solving the situation but
only in isolating itself from the world,” one source told The Times of
Israel. How big an embargo? According to the Stockholm International
Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), which tracks global arms transfers, 69
percent of Israel’s arms imports in 2019-2023 came from the United
States and 30% from Germany, largely due to multibillion-euro submarine
and corvette procurement agreements for the Israeli navy. These purchases
were intended to enable Israel to protect its gas rigs and maritime
space. But they have also been politically sensitive in Israel due to
the so-called submarine affair investigation, in which German
shipbuilder ThyssenKrupp’s $2 billion sale of the vessels to Israel came
under scrutiny for alleged corruption and bribery. In the Gaza war’s
first year, Germany approved $355 million in arms sales to Israel, of
which about 6% was classified under German export law as “offensive,” or
designed for use in combat outside the purchaser’s territory. That
portion included munitions, bulletproof vehicles, armored trucks and
anti-tank missiles. In the second year, total sales fell to $135
million, according to German government data published in local
media. The implementation of Merz’s decision will depend on how German
ministries interpret it. Committees in the defense, economy, foreign and
possibly finance ministries review arms deals, determining whether
items are for Israel’s defense or are offensive weapons for use in Gaza.
While the distinction is clearer regarding munitions, it becomes
murkier when it comes to delivering equipment for German ships Israel
has already bought. The extent of the embargo could also change. The
Bundestag could expand it via new legislation, but defense industry
sources also say the decision’s discretionary scope suggests Israel
could mitigate its impact through diplomacy. They note that Israel could
open a two-month window for dialogue by emphasizing that the Gaza City
plan is scheduled to start only in October.Such an effort, the sources
say, would require Israel to treat the decision seriously and send
senior envoys – such as Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar or President Isaac
Herzog – to engage with Berlin directly.
Far-right pressure on
PM grows as MKs threaten elections if no ‘decisive’ Gaza
victory-Religious Zionism MK Zvi Sukkot says party will meet in coming
days to decide on path forward, day after chair Bezalel Smotrich said
he’s ‘lost faith’ in Netanyahu By Sam Sokol-and ToI Staff Today, 3:13
pm-AUG 10,25
Several far-right lawmakers threatened on Sunday to
bolt Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition, a day after Finance
Minister Bezalel Smotrich said he’d “lost faith” in the premier’s war
strategy.Zvi Sukkot of Smotrich’s Religious Zionism party and Yitzhak
Kroizer of Otzma Yehudit both said on Sunday that they were worried that
the plan to conquer Gaza City, approved by the security cabinet last
week, is a ploy to pressure Hamas back to the negotiating table,
resulting in a partial ceasefire and hostage release deal rather than a
“decisive” victory over the terror group. They were joined by Religious
Zionism MK Simcha Rothman, who said that the cabinet’s decision had
brought the nationalist party closer to leaving the government.Sukkot
told Ynet that his party would meet in the coming days to decide on its
path forward. The departure of any lawmaker from the coalition would
leave Netanyahu with a minority in the Knesset.“If we return to October
6, 2023, and decide to abandon the war’s objectives, it is an
existential danger to the State of Israel,” Sukkot posted on X on
Sunday, referring to the day before the Hamas-led invasion of Israel
that launched the war, when the terror group controlled Gaza. “If this
is the situation, in my humble opinion, we need to go to
elections.”Members of the two parties have consistently advocated for
Israel to occupy and annex Gaza, for the Gazan population to be pressed
to depart, and for Israeli settlements to be rebuilt in the
enclave.Kroizer echoed Sukkot’s comments in a radio interview.“If we see
that this plan isn’t…. where we’re going for a decisive victory over
the terror groups in the Gaza Strip, and again we come to a round and a
maneuver that ends in a partial deal, [leaving the government] is
something we’ll definitely consider,” Kroizer said. “We might get to a
point where we need to return the mandate to the citizens of the State
of Israel” — meaning, new elections.Rothman sounded a similar note in an
interview with the Knesset Channel.Asked why party leader Smotrich has
not already quit if he had no faith in Netanyahu, Rothman replied that
“it’s definitely on the table. It’s something that’s been said many
times… that the moment we are convinced that they have dropped the goals
of the war… we will no longer be a part of the government.”Last week’s
cabinet meeting brought Religious Zionism very close to such an
eventuality, Rothman added, although nothing is certain yet.“I suppose
the coming hours and days will tell,” he said, demanding that the
cabinet cancel its decision and “go all the way to the end to defeat
Hamas.”Initially, Netanyahu faced heavy blowback over the Gaza City plan
from the opposition, with lawmakers warning it would endanger Israeli
hostages and soldiers and sink the army into a quagmire. The plan has
also faced widespread opposition internationally from leaders who say
Israel must not occupy Gaza, that the war must end, and the dire
humanitarian conditions in the Strip must be addressed. But the threats
from within his government indicate that his partners on the right are
also skeptical that the push into Gaza City will serve their goals. On
Saturday night, Smotrich posted a video on X saying that in light of the
Gaza City plan, he has “lost faith that the prime minister is able and
wants to lead the IDF to a decisive victory.”Smotrich said he had
“worked intensively” with Netanyahu in recent weeks to formulate a new
plan for “victory in Gaza,” which would consist of a combination of
military and political actions intended to destroy Hamas’s military and
civil capabilities and force it to free the hostages. But Smotrich said
the premier “made a U-turn” and “succumbed to weakness, let emotion win
over reason and decided to do more of the same again,” launching a
military maneuver aimed not at complete victory, but only at pressuring
Hamas to agree to a “partial hostage deal.”According to Kan news,
Smotrich also threatened to bring down the government and force a new
election during Thursday’s cabinet meeting.“We will meet in the coming
days and make a decision as a faction,” Sukkot told Ynet regarding the
threat to leave. He added that “this is a good government,” but said if
the country returns to a pre-October 7 reality, “I won’t be able to
sleep at night. We’ll need to go to elections.”Seizing on the internal
turmoil, Opposition Leader Yair Lapid called on Smotrich on Sunday to
help advance a bill to dissolve the Knesset and hold new elections.“In
your own words, you admitted that the prime minister’s policy is not
leading to a decisive outcome in Gaza, is not returning our hostages,
and is not winning the war,” Lapid said in a statement. “You also added
that you can no longer stand behind the prime minister and back him
up.”The Knesset is currently in recess. In June, the opposition held a
vote on dissolution of the parliament amid a fight over military
enlistment between Netanyahu and his Haredi coalition partners, but that
bill failed to advance, with Haredi leaders reportedly balking in part
because they learned Israel was about to attack Iran’s nuclear
program.Knesset rules dictate that the bill cannot come to the floor
again for six months. But in July, Lapid announced that he had begun the
process of collecting 61 signatures in order to submit a so-called
“change of circumstances” letter to Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana of
Netanyahu’s Likud Party, requesting permission to hold a new vote on
dissolving the Knesset.According to the Knesset bylaws, a defeated bill
can be submitted again for reconsideration before six months have passed
if circumstances have changed significantly. Such a change can be shown
by collecting 61 lawmakers’ signatures, constituting a majority of the
body.

how-A new collection at the Israel Antiquities Authority campus in
Jerusalem showcases the painstaking identification of victims and
documentation of destruction sites-By Rossella Tercatin-Today, 8:25

When Assaf Peretz, an archaeologist and field
photographer at the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA), entered the
first house he had been assigned to examine at Kibbutz Be’eri about two
weeks after the October 7, 2023, Hamas atrocities, his heart sank.“The
children’s room looked exactly like the room of my eldest child,” Peretz
said, describing the furniture and stuffed animals still neatly in
place, despite the devastation. “At that point, one of my colleagues
came to me and told me that I needed to make a mental switch, otherwise I
would not be able to continue. I did, and from that moment, I worked as
if I were out for an academic excavation.”Peretz was among dozens of
archaeologists who, in the aftermath of the Hamas onslaught that killed
some 1,200 people in southern Israel, combed through massacre sites to
help identify victims’ remains. Even as these archaeologists performed
their work, authorities were still struggling to determine who had been
killed or kidnapped, and numerous people remained unaccounted for.Peretz
spoke to The Times of Israel on the sidelines of the inauguration of
“Rising from the Ashes: Archaeology in a National Crisis,” an exhibition
at the Jay and Jeanie Schottenstein National Campus for the Archaeology
of Israel in Jerusalem.Spread across three rooms with multiple
audiovisual installations, the exhibition highlights the work of experts
both in the field and in laboratories — work that included taking
millions of photographs and hours of footage to document the
destruction. The final room focuses on IAA staff’s outreach to evacuees
nationwide, offering lectures and workshops for both children and
adults.“During my career as an archaeologist, I have excavated hundreds
of graves and photographed thousands,” Peretz said. “In 2022, I
excavated the largest cemetery from the Late Roman/Early Byzantine
periods in the northern Negev [Desert]. Because of that expertise, after
October 7, I got a call asking if I would come to the Gaza
envelope.”Peretz recalled that at first he was hesitant, fearing the
impact the experience would have on his mental health, but then he
decided to join.“The next day, I was in Be’eri,” he said. “At first, it
was pure shock — the stench of burned and rotting bodies seemed to
assault me, to wrap around me. It felt like being punched in the
face.”The expertise of Peretz and his colleagues proved crucial.“We’re
trained to recognize bones, even the smallest fragments, no matter their
state of preservation, amid ashes and debris,” he said. “That’s exactly
what we did.”The first hall of the exhibition showcases stories of the
16 individuals identified through IAA findings.Speaking to The Times of
Israel in November 2023, IAA archaeologist Joe Uziel — who also
volunteered in Gaza envelope communities — said they had recovered
remains belonging to 60 individuals; at the time, only about 10 had been
identified. At the exhibition’s inauguration, Peretz noted that many of
the remains — often charred or tiny bone fragments — could not be
identified because no DNA could be extracted. Others, he added, belonged
to Hamas terrorists killed in the fighting. In some cases, the
archaeologists were able to recover personal belongings of the
victims.“In one house — burned almost entirely to the ground — we found
about 15 photographs in the safe room,” Peretz said. “There were 15
pictures from a family vacation. Outside, on the lawn, we discovered
some drawings the grandchildren had made for their grandparents.”“How
those pictures and drawings survived the fire, I have no idea,” he
added. “But we returned them to the family. They told us it was all they
had left of their parents and grandparents.”In at least one case, a
victim was identified thanks to a burned object found at the site of the
Supernova music festival, where Hamas terrorists killed over 360
partygoers.Weeks after October 7, the family of 25-year-old Shani Gabay
still did not know of her fate. The family had last heard from Shani
after terrorists wounded her as she was trying to flee. Shani’s remains
had not been found, and her parents presumed she had been
kidnapped.“Shani was considered missing for 47 days,” her mother, Michal
Gabay, recalled at the exhibition’s inauguration. “For 47 days, we
lived in uncertainty — was she kidnapped, was she killed?”“Our greatest
fear was that she would become a new Ron Arad,” she added, invoking the
Israeli Air Force navigator who bailed out over southern Lebanon in 1986
and whose fate remains unknown, though he is presumed dead.IAA deputy
director Moshe Ajami spotted the moon-shaped necklace Shani had been
wearing that day while examining the ruins of a destroyed ambulance.
Around 20 people had taken shelter inside before Hamas terrorists fired a
rocket-propelled grenade that obliterated the vehicle, killing 18.DNA
tests on the necklace confirmed Shani’s identity, alongside that of
another young woman whose remains had been buried weeks earlier. This
led to a reexamination of the remains, and some were confirmed to be
Shani’s.“Only a few of Shani’s remains were found — two teeth, a
vertebra, and another bone,” Gabay said.“Thanks to Moshe, who found the
necklace, we are not another Ron Arad family,” Gabay said. “We were able
to close the circle and give her a dignified burial in our town,
surrounded by all who loved her.”Speaking with The Times of Israel,
Ajami recalled his initial fear of meeting Shani Gabay’s family.“At
first, I was worried because what I found meant their child was dead —
while they were likely still holding onto hope that she was alive,” he
said. “But when we met, they thanked me for helping them to have
closure.”When asked how he felt working at the Supernova site — after
hundreds had searched without success — Ajami said emotions had no
place.“We worked like machines,” he said.At the event, both Michal Gabay
and her youngest daughter, Nitzan, Shani’s sister, wore replicas of
Shani’s necklace.“Today, we all wear Shani’s moon-shaped necklace, which
is also sold to raise funds for a charity we founded in her name,”
Nitzan Gabay told The Times of Israel. She explained that the charity
supports causes Shani cared deeply about, including animal welfare and
environmental protection.“More than anything, Shani loved life, so every
day we wake up thinking of what Shani would have wanted from us, and we
set out to do it,” Nitzan said.Together with videos featuring stories
and testimonies from victims’ family members and archaeologists, the
exhibition also features the experts’ tools, including sifters and
dental tools designed for searching narrow spaces, such as gunshot holes
and other types of cracks.Documenting the destruction for posterity-As
the archaeologists finished scanning the sites for victims’ remains or
possessions, the IAA began another project to preserve the memory of
October 7 for posterity. The experts documented each house, neighborhood,
and community through pictures, footage, and other technological means,
and created 3D models of the destruction sites in the IAA labs.“It is
important to emphasize the purpose of this project,” said the exhibit’s
project director, Leora Berry, as she led a group of reporters through a
hall where visitors can see and interact with several such 3D models,
and listen to the voices of experts as well as of October 7
survivors.“We are already seeing how the whole area is coming back to
life, as it should be; it is being rehabilitated, and the destroyed
areas will soon disappear under the new buildings,” she said. “This
operation is vital — not only for research and investigation, but also
as an essential testimony for those who doubt the horrors that unfolded
in Israel on October 7.”
