Turkey Dries Up the Euphrates-The crisis
revolves around the Euphrates River, which quickly became the Euphrates
Creek when Turkey completely cut off the water flow upstream of Syria,
reported Al Akhbar on May 30. The Euphrates originates in Turkey and
passes through the Atatürk Dam before flowing into Syria and Iraq. By
cutting off the flow and directing it into the reservoir, Turkey has
lowered water levels downstream.Water levels in Lake Assad, Syria’s
largest body of water, have dropped by 20 feet since Turkey shut off the
water supply. The Euphrates hydrates large parts of Syria.
When did Turkey dam the Euphrates river?
The
construction began in 1983 and was completed in 1990. (7 YEARS) (THE
FUTURE TRIBULATION IS ALSO 7 YEARS)-The dam and the hydroelectric power
plant, which went into service after the upfilling of the reservoir was
completed in 1992, are operated by the State Hydraulic Works (DSİ).

China denies conspiring with N.Korea, Russia against US.
Beijing,
Sept 4 (AFP) Sep 04, 2025-China defended on Thursday its decision to
invite the leaders of Russia and North Korea to World War II
commemorations, which President Donald Trump accused them of using to
conspire against the United States.Trump wrote a testy Truth Social post
addressing his Chinese counterpart after North Korean leader Kim Jong
Un and Russia's Vladimir Putin flanked Xi Jinping at a massive parade in
Beijing showcasing Chinese military hardware."Give my warmest regards
to Vladimir Putin, and Kim Jong Un, as you conspire against The United
States of America," Trump wrote.Asked about Trump's post, Beijing's
foreign ministry said on Thursday "foreign guests" had been invited to
commemorate 80 years since the end of World War II."It is to work
together with peace-loving countries and peoples to remember history,
cherish the memory of the martyrs, cherish peace, and create the
future," spokesman Guo Jiakun told reporters."China's development of
diplomatic relations with any country is never directed against any
third party," he said. The Kremlin, meanwhile, said Wednesday it thought
Trump's allegation was "not without irony".Beijing had much stronger
words for the European Union's top diplomat Kaja Kallas, who also
criticised the parade.Kallas said Wednesday that Xi, Putin and Kim
appearing together was part of efforts to build an anti-Western "new
world order" and was "a direct challenge to the international system
built on rules"."The remarks made by a certain EU official are full of
ideological bias, lack basic historical knowledge, and blatantly stir up
confrontation and conflict," Guo said Thursday."Such statements are
profoundly misguided and utterly irresponsible."He added: "We hope that
those people will abandon their frog-in-the-well prejudice and
arrogance...and do more things that are conducive to world peace and
stability and China-Europe relations."
China's Xi holds talks with North Korea's Kim in Beijing.
Beijing,
Sept 4 (AFP) Sep 04, 2025-Chinese President Xi Jinping and Kim Jong Un
met for talks in Beijing on Thursday, state media reported, while the
North Korean leader is in China on a rare foreign visit.Kim and Russia's
Vladimir Putin flanked Xi at a massive parade of Chinese military might
on Wednesday in Beijing, where underwater drones, massive missiles and
laser weapons were showcased to the foreign leaders.China is North
Korea's most important ally, their relationship forged in the bloodshed
of the Korean War in the 1950s.Chinese state media said Kim and Xi met
for talks in Beijing's Great Hall of the People.China's foreign ministry
said earlier the talks would be "an in-depth exchange of views on
China-DPRK relations and issues of common concern", using the acronym
for North Korea."China is willing to work with the DPRK to strengthen
strategic communication... (and) deepen the exchange of experience in
governance," spokesman Guo Jiakun said.Kim arrived in Beijing on Tuesday
accompanied by his daughter Kim Ju Ae, his second reported trip abroad
in six years and his first to China since 2019.His attendance at the
parade was the first time he was seen with Xi and Putin at the same
event.Kim enjoyed a brief bout of high-profile international diplomacy
from around 2018, meeting US President Donald Trump and then South
Korean president Moon Jae-in several times. However, he withdrew from the
global scene after the collapse of a summit with Trump in Hanoi in
2019.Beijing has historically provided diplomatic, economic and
political support to the secretive North, which remains under crippling
international sanctions.
China 'unstoppable', says Xi with Kim, Putin at his side.
Beijing,
Sept 3 (AFP) Sep 03, 2025-North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russia's
Vladimir Putin flanked Xi Jinping at a massive parade of military might
in Beijing on Wednesday, capping a week of diplomatic grandstanding by
the Chinese president and his allies against the West.In unprecedented
scenes, Xi shook hands with both leaders and chatted with the pair as
they walked down a red carpet by Tiananmen Square, with Putin to Xi's
right and Kim to his left. The event, ostensibly to mark 80 years since
the end of World War II, was a chance for Xi to showcase China's
military prowess and bring together friendly leaders to send a message
to the rest of the world.Kicking off the parade, Xi warned the world was
still "faced with a choice of peace or war", but said China was
"unstoppable".China's enormous new intercontinental DF-5C ballistic
missile, with a range of 20,000 kilometres (12,425 miles), counted
prominently among the hardware on display. The heavily choreographed
event drew an acidic response from President Donald Trump, who accused
the three leaders of plotting against the United States."Give my warmest
regards to Vladimir Putin, and Kim Jong Un, as you conspire against The
United States of America," he wrote on Truth Social. The European
Union's foreign policy chief denounced the presence of the Russian and
North Korean leaders alongside Xi as "a direct challenge to the
international system built on rules"."A new global order is in the
making," Kaja Kallas told journalists in Brussels.Putin vowed to carry
on the war in Ukraine if a peace deal could not be reached, with Trump's
diplomatic initiatives appearing to have stalled."Let's see how the
situation develops. If not, then we will have to resolve all our tasks
militarily," Putin told reporters in Beijing.- Military hardware on show
-Xi inspected the massed troops and weaponry from an open-topped
limousine on Beijing's vast Chang'an Avenue during the 90-minute parade,
before turning back to join his guests in a seating area above a
portrait of Mao Zedong on Tiananmen, the entrance gate of the historic
Forbidden City.China's huge collection of military vehicles and heavy
weapons rolled past the dignitaries, while images of thousands of
servicemen and women in immaculate uniforms marching in tight ranks and
soldiers jumping in and out of vehicles were shown in a slick state
media broadcast.New underwater drones and supersonic missiles counted
among the gear on display, as well as the ICBMs.Beijing residents went
out into the streets to glimpse a flypast involving scores of warplanes
and helicopters, some making an "80" formation.Millions of Chinese
people were killed during a prolonged war with imperial Japan in the
1930s and 40s, which became part of a global conflict following Tokyo's
1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.- Whirlwind week -All eyes were on how Xi,
Putin and the travel-shy Kim interacted with each other, but the state
media broadcast only rare snatches of the three together. Foreign
journalists were kept at a distance and told not to film or photograph
the leaders. The event was the climax of a whirlwind week for Xi, who
hosted a slew of Eurasian leaders for a summit aimed at putting China
front and centre of regional relations.During the summit, Xi slammed
"bullying behaviour" from certain countries -- a veiled reference to the
United States. Many guests from the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation
summit in Tianjin joined Xi for the Beijing parade, although no major
Western dignitaries were among the two dozen world leaders who
attended.- Political influence -Security around Beijing was tightened,
with road closures, military personnel stationed on bridges and street
corners, and miles of white barriers lining the capital's wide
boulevards.China has touted the parade as a show of unity, and Kim's
attendance is the first time he has been seen with Xi and Putin at the
same event. It is only his second reported trip abroad in six years.Kim
was accompanied by his daughter Kim Ju Ae and his sister Kim Yo Jong,
who was photographed by AFP at a gala lunch on Wednesday.Putin and Kim
held talks after Wednesday's parade, during which the Russian president
thanked Kim for deploying North Korean soldiers to aid Russia in its
conflict with Ukraine.Lam Peng Er, principal research fellow from the
East Asian Institute at the National University of Singapore, said Kim's
visit "demonstrates to the North Koreans and the world that he has
powerful Russian and Chinese friends who treat him with respect"."China
also shows that it has convening power and political influence to bring
Putin and Kim Jong Un together," he told AFP.
Open mic caught Xi, Putin discussing immortality.
Beijing,
Sept 4 (AFP) Sep 04, 2025-Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russia's
Vladimir Putin discussed life-prolonging organ transplants and
immortality as they chatted before Beijing's massive military parade
this week, in comments picked up by state media microphones.Historic
images showed Xi shaking hands and speaking with Putin and North Korean
leader Kim Jong Un as they walked down a red carpet by Tiananmen Square,
in scenes viewed as a challenge to US President Donald Trump."These
days... 70 years old," Xi said in Mandarin as he walked beside Putin and
Kim, footage from state broadcaster CCTV showed.Xi's translator,
conveying his remarks to Putin, is then heard in Russian quoting a line
from a Tang dynasty poem: "In the past, it used to be rare for someone
to be older than 70 and these days they say that at 70 one's still a
child."Putin then turned towards Xi, speaking while gesturing with his
hands, though this is inaudible on the CCTV feed. The same Chinese
translator then relayed Putin's remarks to Xi."With the... development
of biotechnology, human organs can be continuously transplanted, people
could get younger as they grow older, and may even become immortal,"
Putin said, according to the translator.Xi then spoke again in Mandarin
as the camera cut away: "Predictions are, in this century, it may be...
possible to live to 150 years old."Putin confirmed the exchange during a
press briefing on Wednesday."Ah, I think it was when we were going to
the parade that the Chairman spoke about this," he told reporters,
referring to Xi."Modern means -- both health improvement and medical
means, and then even all kinds of surgical ones related to organ
replacement -- allow humanity to hope that active life will continue not
as it does today," Putin added. The Chinese and Russian leaders, both
72, have not expressed any intention of stepping down. While Xi's
predecessors Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao relinquished power after 10 years
in office, he abolished term limits in 2018 and in 2023 was handed a
third term as Chinese president.
Pomp, pageantry, prowess at Beijing's military parade.
Beijing,
Sept 3 (AFP) Sep 03, 2025-Cheers and gasps could be heard around
Beijing on Wednesday as China's capital lit up with pomp, pageantry and
patriotism for a massive parade showcasing the country's latest military
hardware.Members of the public gripping Chinese flags lined the streets
for the morning spectacle, while the few thousand who had tickets
gathered from the crack of dawn in Tiananmen Square."This is the first
time I'm attending a military parade. It's magnificent to be here,"
Jenny Wang, a 24-year-old civil servant, told AFP of President Xi
Jinping's show of force to the world."It's important to commemorate the
end of this war and to ensure that more people around the world learn
about this conflict and the suffering endured by the Chinese at the
time," she added.Guests posed with wide smiles for photos with their
parade invitations against the backdrop of Tiananmen, the entrance gate
of the historic Forbidden City, which was adorned with national flags of
China.Giant, golden numerals "1945" and "2025" were erected on the
square, a reminder of the 80 years that had passed since the end of
World War II, as well as thousands of red and green seats set up for the
occasion.Parade-goers sang along as massed choirs belted out a
patriotic, anti-Japanese anthem, pumping their fists in the air.Military
bands blasted their trumpets in unison as soldiers marched in the
square.- 'Comrades... working hard!' -In never-seen-before scenes, Xi
was pictured shaking hands and chatting with North Korean leader Kim
Jong Un and Russia's Vladimir Putin as they walked over for a group
photo with other foreign leaders.Dressed in a dark grey Chinese-style
suit, Xi stood in an open-topped black limousine as it drove by troops
standing at attention along the wide Chang'an Avenue."Comrades, you are
working hard!" he shouted repeatedly into four microphones, before
joining his guests in a grandstand above the iconic portrait of Mao
Zedong on Tiananmen. The ceremony took place in bright sunshine, with
temperatures in the mid-30s, which proved difficult for many spectators
who sweated profusely in the unshaded stands. Some who felt unwell left
with the help of staff.Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko -- one
of Putin's staunch allies -- was seen wearing a cap and sunglasses,
while using a black electronic fan to keep cool.Intercontinental
ballistic missiles (ICBMs), rocket launchers, and battle tanks were
paraded past the dignitaries, and soldiers marched with precise,
coordinated steps in tight formations. The crowd whipped out their
smartphones as a swarm of helicopters flew in formation over Tiananmen
Square, forming the number "80" in the sky."Oohs" and "Aahs" rippled
through the audience when the gigantic DF-5C ICBM was unveiled, and
again when tens of thousands of doves of peace were released into the
sky.- National pride -Chinese flags lined the streets of Beijing, which
was significantly quieter than usual because of road closures.A sense of
excitement was palpable in the capital even after the parade had ended,
with Beijingers saying that they were proud of China's grand display of
power.Sun Jianhua, 54, told AFP that she had watched the event at home
from start to finish."The pride and honour I feel is indescribable," the
Beijing resident gushed."We sacrificed so much (during the war), we
paid such a heavy price. Now that there's peace, we should all cherish
this era."Meanwhile, others said that they felt China had become
"isolated" as only leaders from 26 countries attended the event, with no
leaders from major Western nations."These countries... are all poor
countries, countries that are currently being bullied by Western
powers," resident Hu Daxian told AFP."Their decision to befriend China,
to be frank, is also out of helplessness," the 50-year-old added. He said
that leaders from major Western nations had not attended due to
"envy"."I hope that China can become friendly with other countries, and
that they won't be jealous."ehl-isk/je/fox-InterContinental Hotels Group
Not for Russia to 'decide' if West can deploy troops to Ukraine: NATO chief.
Prague,
Sept 4 (AFP) Sep 04, 2025-NATO chief Mark Rutte said Thursday that
Russia did not have a veto on whether Western powers can deploy troops
to Ukraine as part of security guarantees if a truce is reached."Why are
we interested in what Russia thinks about troops in Ukraine? It's a
sovereign country. It's not for them to decide," Rutte said."Russia has
nothing to do with this."Leaders from a so-called coalition of the
willing spearheaded by France and Britain are holding talks Thursday to
firm up contributions to the planned security guarantees."If Ukraine
wants to have security guarantee forces in Ukraine to support a peace
deal, it's up to them. Nobody else can decide about it," Rutte said on a
visit to Prague."I think we really have to stop making Putin too
powerful," he added, referring to Russian President Vladimir
Putin.Russia has said it remains firmly opposed to any Western troops
being deployed in Ukraine as part of a possible peace settlement.Western
diplomats say that the group of roughly 30 countries discussing a
possible "reassurance force" for Ukraine now have concrete numbers of
the troops they could commit.European nations hope that by putting a
clear plan on the table they can convince US President Donald Trump to
make good on a promise to offer American military backing.Trump has been
pushing to end the war, but the Kremlin has been stalling efforts to
organise direct talks between Putin and Ukraine's President Volodymyr
Zelensky.
Daughter of N. Korea's Kim makes global 'debut' on China trip By Claire Lee and Hieun Shin.
Seoul
(AFP) Sept 3, 2025-North Korean leader Kim Jong Un travelled to Beijing
with his daughter and possible heir Kim Ju Ae, state media images
showed, to attend a massive military parade Wednesday. It is the first
known international appearance by the teenager, who has attended
multiple North Korean weapons tests alongside her dad, and analysts say
it is a clear signal of her importance in the Kim dynasty's succession
planning. Here is what we know about her:- Who is she? -Ju Ae was first
publicly introduced to the world in 2022, when she accompanied her
father to the launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile. But it was
former NBA star Dennis Rodman who first revealed to the world Kim had a
daughter.According to Rodman, during his 2013 visit to Pyongyang, Kim
introduced him to his wife Ri Sol Ju and a baby girl, saying "that's my
daughter."Pyongyang's state media have never identified her by name, but
South Korean intelligence says she is Ju Ae, the daughter of Kim and
his wife, who they believe married in 2009.- How has she appeared
publicly so far? -In recent years, North Korean state media have
referred to her as the "the beloved child," or "the esteemed child".Also
in state media, North Korean adults have been shown bowing deeply
before her.At recent public appearances, she has often walked ahead of
both her aunt -- powerful regime spokeswoman Kim Yo Jong -- and mother,
linking arms with her father, whispering to him, and holding hands.Kim
has even been seen letting his daughter enter a car before him.Ju Ae has
also drawn attention for her taste in luxury fashion, appearing in
Gucci sunglasses and Cartier watches, while at times mirroring her
father's distinctive style, donning matching leather jackets and dark
glasses.- Is this her first trip abroad? -Her trip to Beijing is her
official first trip abroad with Kim."She has sequentially appeared at
military and diplomatic events, including a Russian Embassy function,"
Yang Moo-jin, former president of the University of North Korean Studies
in Seoul, told AFP."But by now accompanying Kim to a 'brother nation's'
Victory Day celebration, she is effectively making her formal debut on
foreign soil," said Yang. With the transition from appearances on a
domestic stage to an international one, this may be the "final gateway
toward succession," added Yang.- Why does it matter? -Experts see that
this is a calculated move by the Kim family, mainly to give Ju Ae some
crucial international exposure."This is not a simple family trip but in
effect a 'debut as successor'," Lim Eul-chul, a professor at the
Institute for Far Eastern Studies at South Korea's Kyungnam University,
told AFP."Past precedent shows a pattern of heirs consolidating their
status through visits to China or international events to gain
legitimacy from socialist powers," said Lim.For example, Kim Jong Il --
Kim Jong Un's father and the designated successor to his own father, Kim
Il Sung -- met Xi Zhongxun, the father of China's leader Xi Jinping, in
1983 in Bejing."Ju Ae's case fits this trajectory," said Lim.- Could
she really be Kim's successor? -In 2024, South Korea's National
Intelligence Service acknowledged for the first time that Ju Ae is
likely to be the next successor."Based on an overall analysis of Kim Ju
Ae's public appearances and the level of protocol accorded to her since
her emergence, she currently appears to be the most likely successor,"
said Cho Tae-yong, then-head of Seoul's spy agency.The confirmation was a
shock for some, as the South Korean government long said that as North
Korea is a male-dominated society, it was "premature" to regard Kim Ju
Ae as the successor. But her appearances tell a different story, said
Cheong Seong-chang at Seoul's Sejong Institute."At a military parade Ju
Ae's white horse appeared second in line after Kim Jong Un's, which can
be seen as evidence pointing to her role as successor," said
Cheong."North Korea has also issued stamps featuring the pair, and high
officials kneeling before her are also proof," he added.
IAEA says Iran suspending cooperation with agency is 'deeply regrettable'.
Vienna,
Sept 3 (AFP) Sep 03, 2025-The UN nuclear watchdog said Wednesday it
regretted Iran's decision to suspend cooperation with the agency in the
wake of June's Israel-Iran war and urged a speedy resumption of
inspections. The suspension followed a 12-day conflict between Iran and
Israel, which saw unprecedented Israeli and US strikes on Iran's nuclear
facilities and escalated tensions between Tehran and the International
Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).Tehran has since said that future
cooperation with the agency will take "a new form".In a confidential
IAEA report seen by AFP on Wednesday, the agency condemned Iran's
"decision to suspend cooperation with" it as "deeply regrettable".The
Vienna-based IAEA said its decision to withdraw its inspectors from Iran
due to safety concerns about military attacks on Iran's nuclear
facilities was "necessary given the overall security situation".In its
report, it said that Iran has an estimated 440.9 kilogrammes of uranium
enriched to up to 60 percent as of 13 June, when the conflict broke out.
The sensitive stockpile is up by 32.3 kilogrammes since 17 May.The IAEA
cautioned that it had "lost continuity of knowledge in relation to the
current inventories of nuclear material in Iran".Uranium enriched to up
to 60 percent fissile purity is close to the roughly 90 percent level
needed for atomic weapons, and way beyond what its needed to generate
electricity.According to the IAEA, Tehran is the only non-nuclear weapon
state to enrich uranium to 60 percent.Iran has always denied seeking a
nuclear weapon.Tensions between Iran and the UN nuclear watchdog have
repeatedly flared since a 2015 deal curbing Tehran's nuclear programme
in exchange for sanctions relief fell apart.Donald Trump unilaterally
withdrew the United States from a landmark 2015 deal with Tehran during
his first term as president. The deal had exchanged sanctions relief for
limits on Iran's nuclear programme.
Sharp rise in GPS jamming in aviation over Baltic Sea: Sweden.by AFP Staff Writers.
Stockholm
(AFP) Sept 4, 2025-GPS interference affecting aviation over the Baltic
Sea region has risen sharply since 2023 and now occurs almost daily,
Sweden's Transport Agency said on Thursday, pointing the finger at
Russia. The number of interference incidents with global navigation
satellite systems (GNSS), such as GPS, in Swedish airspace has risen
from 55 in 2023 to 733 this year as of August 18, according to new data
presented by the Transport Agency."We have done analyses over a longer
period and collected data. We can conclude that the interference is
originating from Russian territory," Andreas Holmgren, in charge of
aviation issues at the agency, told AFP.The interference includes both
spoofing (false positioning) and jamming (disruption of signals). It was
initially limited to the eastern areas of Sweden's airspace, over
international waters. But it has now "spread both geographically and in
scope... occurring over a larger area over both land and sea in Sweden",
Holmgren said in a statement."This is serious and is a security risk
for civil aviation, not least given the extent, duration and nature of
the interference," he added. The jamming also affects maritime navigation
and critical infrastructure using GNSS, the agency said.In early June,
Sweden and five other Baltic Sea countries -- Estonia, Finland, Latvia,
Lithuania and Poland -- raised the issue with the Council of the
International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), of which Russia is a
member state. The ICAO Council "expressed grave concern over the
situation and demanded that Russia comply with its international
obligations and ensure an immediate end to the interference", the agency
said.Despite this, the interference "in the Baltic Sea region has
instead increased", it added. The countries now intend to raise the issue
with the ICAO's general assembly this autumn.A plane carrying EU chief
Ursula von der Leyen was hit by GPS jamming as it readied to land in
Bulgaria on Monday, and Russia was suspected to be behind the incident,
the European Commission said. The plane was able to land safely. The
incident came as Western powers discuss new aid to Ukraine as it fends
off Russia's invasion.
US strike 'very clear' message to drug cartels: Pentagon chief.
Washington,
Sept 3 (AFP) Sep 03, 2025-The deadly US strike on an alleged drug boat
in the Caribbean is a "very clear" message from President Donald Trump
to cartels, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Wednesday.US forces
carried out the strike on a speedboat the previous day, with Trump
saying it killed 11 "narcoterrorists" from a gang he alleged was
controlled by leftist Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro."You want to try
to traffic drugs? It's a new day. It's a different day. And so those 11
drug traffickers are no longer with us, sending a very clear signal that
this is an activity the United States is not going to tolerate in our
hemisphere," Hegseth said on Fox News. The Pentagon chief said he watched
the strike live, but declined to give details on how it was
conducted."We knew exactly who was in that boat. We knew exactly what
they were doing, and we knew exactly who they represented, and that was
Tren de Aragua," Hegseth said, referring to a gang that Washington
designated as a terrorist organization earlier this year. The United
States has eight Navy ships in Latin America -- seven in the Caribbean
and one in the Pacific -- that it says are involved in counter-narcotics
efforts, but Maduro has cast their presence as a threat to his
country.Asked if regime change was the US goal in Venezuela, Hegseth
said: "That's a presidential-level decision, and we're prepared with
every asset that the American military has."
Sudan says no evidence of chemical weapons use in Khartoum.
Khartoum,
Sept 3 (AFP) Sep 03, 2025-Sudan's army-backed government has released a
report saying it found no evidence of chemical contamination two months
after the United States imposed sanctions over chemical weapons
allegations it denies."Based on available evidence and data from field
measurements, health surveillance systems and official medical
reports... there is no evidence of chemical or radioactive contamination
in Khartoum state," the health ministry said in a report released this
week. The ministry said the report was based on field tests and forensic
reviews carried out since April, when the army regained control of the
capital from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).In June,
Washington imposed sanctions on the army-backed government, accusing the
army of using chemical weapons last year in its war against the RSF.It
did not provide details of where or when the alleged chemical weapons
attacks took place.Sudan's army-backed government has repeatedly denied
the US allegations, calling them "baseless" and "political
blackmail".The health ministry said there were no reports of mass deaths
or symptoms indicative of chemical poisoning. It said forensic
pathology teams found no fatalities typically associated with chemical
weapons. The conflict that erupted between the regular army and the RSF
in April 2023 has killed tens of thousands of people and driven more
than 14 million from their homes, according to UN figures. The RSF too is
under US sanctions. In January, the State Department determined that
the group had "committed genocide" against some ethnic groups in the
western region of Darfur and imposed sanctions on its leader Mohammad
Hamdan Daglo.
Scrap nukes, director Bigelow urges in new thriller at Venice-By Alexandria SAGE, Adam PLOWRIGHT.
Venice
(AFP) Sept 2, 2025-The world needs to be "more informed" and reduce its
nuclear stockpile, US director Kathryn Bigelow said on Tuesday ahead of
the premiere of her latest film, about an imminent strike on the US.The
first woman to win the Academy Award for best director, Bigelow
showcased her first movie in eight years, White House political thriller
"A House of Dynamite", at the Venice Film Festival Tuesday to ecstatic
early reviews. The Hollywood Reporter called it an "unrelenting
chokehold thriller".Arguing for nuclear disarmament, the director of
"The Hurt Locker" and "Zero Dark Thirty" said human survival was at
stake."Hope against hope maybe we reduce the global stockpile someday
but in the meantime we are really living in a house of dynamite," she
told journalists at a press conference ahead of the film's premiere."I
want them all gone. How is annihilating the world a good defensive
measure? I mean, what are you defending?" asked Bigelow."We need to be
much more informed, and that would be my greatest hope, and that we
actually initiate a conversation about nuclear weapons and
non-proliferation in a perfect world," she said. The 2010 winner of the
best director Oscar for "The Hurt Locker", which follows a US bomb
disposal team in Iraq, Bigelow once again focuses on geopolitics and
national security, this time a nuclear missile threat to the United
States.Starring Idris Elba as the US president, the action of the film
takes place over 18 minutes following the discovery that a nuclear
missile from an unknown country has been launched at the United States,
threatening to wipe out Chicago.Bigelow follows the countdown to the
imminent strike from various command centres, starting with the
Situation Room, the West Wing's crisis management centre. In a
tension-creating cinematic construct, she then revisits the same event,
using the same dialogue, from the perspective of the Pentagon and the
White House, in which the president is finally forced to decide how to
act.The Hollywood Reporter wrote that the film was "so controlled,
kinetic and unsettlingly immersive that you stagger out at the end of it
wondering if the world will still be intact."It is one of 21 films
competing for the top Golden Lion prize in Venice, which will be handed
out on Saturday.- Passion required -It has been eight years since
Bigelow's last feature, "Detroit" about the 1967 riot in the US city,
making the premiere of "A House of Dynamite" one of the highlights of
the festival."I have to be passionate about a subject matter," Bigelow
said, explaining her absence until now."I have to really believe in
whatever the material is."Producer Netflix is banking on "A House of
Dynamite" as an Oscar contender. It is one of three films from the
streaming platform at Venice this year, along with Noah Baumbach's
comedy "Jay Kelly", starring George Clooney as a Hollywood star with an
identity crisis, and the big-budget "Frankenstein" by Guillermo del
Toro, starring Oscar Isaac. Also premiering on Tuesday was "Dead Man's
Wire" from Gus Van Sant -- the director of "Good Will Hunting" and
"Drugstore Cowboy" -- who similarly has been out of the spotlight in
recent years. The US director's first movie since 2018 centres on a
real-life hostage drama at a loan agency, with Bill Skarsgard and Al
Pacino."L'Etranger" (The Stranger), an adaptation of the Albert Camus
novel from French director Francois Ozon, also debuted.Starring Benjamin
Voisin as the detached protagonist Meursault, the film is shot in black
and white, which Ozon said helped to get at the novel's essence."As
it's a philosophical book, it seemed to me that black and white was
ideal for telling this story, getting rid of colours, the essential was a
form of purity," Ozon told a press conference. The French director
acknowledged feeling "a little anxious" tackling the French classic
published in 1942."Everyone around me was saying: 'It's my favourite
book. I'm curious to see what you'll do with it.'"ams/adp/gil/gv
China says will not participate in denuclearisation talks with US, Russia by AFP Staff Writers.
Beijing
(AFP) Aug 27, 2025-China said Wednesday that it would not participate
in denuclearisation talks with the United States and Russia, after
President Donald Trump said he hoped to include Beijing in
negotiations.Trump on Monday said the United States was trying to pursue
denuclearisation with both countries."I think the denuclearisation is a
very -- it's a big aim. But Russia's willing to do it and I think China
is going to be willing to do it too," Trump told reporters at the White
House."We can't let nuclear weapons proliferate. We have to stop
nuclear weapons," he added.Russia and the United States -- former Cold
War rivals -- possess almost 90 percent of the world's nuclear weapons
between them, but Moscow pulled out of the last remaining arms control
agreement with Washington in 2023.When asked about Trump's comments,
Beijing's foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said Wednesday it was
"neither reasonable nor realistic" to expect China to participate in
trilateral nuclear disarmament negotiations with the United States and
Russia."China and the United States are not at the same level at all in
terms of nuclear capabilities," Guo told reporters."The countries with
the largest nuclear arsenal should earnestly fulfil their special and
primary responsibility for nuclear disarmament," he said.Beijing says it
favours disarmament in principle but has regularly rejected
Washington's invitations to join US-Russian talks on reducing their
nuclear arsenals.According to 2024 estimates by the Stockholm
International Peace Research Institute, the United States has 3,708
nuclear warheads and Russia 4,380, excluding retired warheads.China had
500, 90 more than in 2023. Behind them were France (290) and Britain
(225).Beijing said on Wednesday it maintains its nuclear forces "at the
minimum level required for national security, and does not engage in an
arms race with any country".
N.Korea could produce 10-20 nukes per year: S.Korea leader by AFP Staff Writers.
Washington
(AFP) Aug 25, 2025-North Korea could soon produce 10 to 20 nuclear
weapons per year, South Korea's dovish new president said Monday, as he
called for efforts to lower tensions.North Korea has assembled an
estimated 50 warheads and has fissile material to produce up to 40 more,
according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute."An
ICBM capable of reaching the United States is almost fully developed,
and they are continuing to build the capacity to produce approximately
10 to 20 nuclear bombs per year," President Lee Jae Myung said at the
Center for Strategic and International Studies.Referring to the
harder-line policies of his predecessor and lack of diplomacy with North
Korea, Lee said: "We have made efforts to deter North Korea and apply
sanctions, but the result has been North Korea continues developing its
nuclear program.""The hard fact is that the number of nuclear weapons
that North Korea possesses has increased over the past three to four
years," he said.Lee said that South Korea was committed to conventional
weapons deterrence against the North but also pointed to his efforts to
ease steps seen as provocative, such as ending loudspeaker blasting of
anti-North Korea messages across the military frontier. He was speaking
after talks with President Donald Trump, who said he hoped to meet with
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un again.
Russia ends freeze on developing short-, medium-ranged nuclear weapons by Darryl Coote.
Washington
DC (UPI) Aug 6, 2025-Russia has announced it is ending its self-imposed
moratorium on the development of short- and medium-range nuclear
missiles, deepening a nuclear weapons stalemate between Moscow and
Washingont.Russia's Foreign Ministry made the announcement Monday in a
lengthy statement that blamed actions taken by the United States and
other nations for its decision."Since our repeated warnings in this
regard have been ignored and the situation is developing along the path
of the actual emplacement of the U.S.-made ground-launched INF-range
missiles in Europe and the Asia-Pacific, the Russian Foreign Ministry
has to state that the conditions for maintaining a unilateral moratorium
on the deployment of similar weapons have ceased to exist," it
said."The ministry is authorized to declare that the Russian Federation
no longer considers itself bound by the relevant previously adopted
self-restrictions."INF is the abbreviation for the Intermediate-Range
Nuclear Forces Treaty between the United States and the then-Soviet
Union in 1987 that required the destruction of ground-launched ballistic
and cruise missiles with ranges between 500 and 5,500 kilometers. The
United States, under the first Trump administration, left the Cold
War-era accord in 2019, following years of allegations that Russia had
repeatedly violated the deal. Russia has used intermediate-range
ballistic missiles in its war with Ukraine.Russia made the announcement
days after Trump on Friday confirmed that the United States repositioned
two nuclear submarines in response to Russian Security Council Chairman
Dmitry Medvedev informing the American president to be wary of Moscow's
nuclear arsenal.Following Russia's Foreign Ministry statement, Medvedev
said it was "the result of NATO countries' anti-Russian policy.""This
is a new reality all our opponents will have to reckon with," he said on
X."Expect further steps."Of the nine countries with nuclear weapons,
the United States and Russia have by far the most. According to the
International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, Russia has more than
5,500 nuclear warheads and the United States has 5,044, accounting for
nearly 90% of the world's nuclear weapons.
80 years on, Korean survivors of WWII atomic bombs still suffer By KANG Jin-kyu with Harumi OZAWA in Hiroshima
Hapcheon,
South Korea (AFP) Aug 4, 2025-Bae Kyung-mi was five years old when the
Americans dropped "Little Boy", the atomic bomb that flattened Hiroshima
on August 6, 1945.Like thousands of other ethnic Koreans working in the
city at the time, her family kept the horror a secret. Many feared the
stigma from doing menial work for colonial ruler Japan, and false
rumours that radiation sickness was contagious.Bae recalls hearing
planes overhead while she was playing at her home in Hiroshima on that
day.Within minutes, she was buried in rubble."I told my mom in Japanese,
'Mom! There are airplanes!'" Bae, now 85, told AFP.She passed out
shortly after. Her home collapsed on top of her, but the debris shielded
her from the burns that killed tens of thousands of people -- including
her aunt and uncle. After the family moved back to Korea, they did not
speak of their experience."I never told my husband that I was in
Hiroshima and a victim of the bombing," Bae said."Back then, people
often said you had married the wrong person if he or she was an atomic
bombing survivor."Her two sons only learned she had been in Hiroshima
when she registered at a special centre set up in 1996 in Hapcheon in
South Korea for victims of the bombings, she said.Bae said she feared
her children would suffer from radiation-related illnesses that
afflicted her, forcing her to have her ovaries and a breast removed
because of the high cancer risk.- A burning city -She knew why she was
getting sick, but did not tell her own family."We all hushed it up," she
said. Some 740,000 people were killed or injured in the twin bombings of
Hiroshima and Nagasaki.More than 10 percent of the victims were Korean,
data suggests, the result of huge flows of people to Japan while it
colonised the Korean peninsula.Survivors who stayed in Japan found they
had to endure discrimination both as "hibakusha", or atomic bomb
survivors, and as Koreans. Many Koreans also had to choose between
pro-Pyongyang and pro-Seoul groups in Japan, after the peninsula was
left divided by the 1950-53 Korean War.Kwon Joon-oh's mother and father
both survived the attack on Hiroshima. The 76-year-old's parents, like
others of their generation, could only work by taking on "filthy and
dangerous jobs" that the Japanese considered beneath them, he
said.Korean victims were also denied an official memorial for decades,
with a cenotaph for them put up in the Hiroshima Peace Park only in the
late 1990s.Kim Hwa-ja was four on August 6, 1945 and remembers being put
on a makeshift horse-drawn trap as her family tried to flee Hiroshima
after the bomb.Smoke filled the air and the city was burning, she said,
recalling how she peeped out from under a blanket covering her, and her
mother screaming at her not to look.Korean groups estimate that up to
50,000 Koreans may have been in the city that day, including tens of
thousands working as forced labourers at military sites.- Stigma -But
records are sketchy."The city office was devastated so completely that
it wasn't possible to track down clear records," a Hiroshima official
told AFP.Japan's colonial policy banned the use of Korean names, further
complicating record-keeping.After the attacks, tens of thousands of
Korean survivors moved back to their newly-independent country. But many
have struggled with health issues and stigma ever since."In those days,
there were unfounded rumours that radiation exposure could be
contagious," said Jeong Soo-won, director of the country's Hapcheon
Atomic Bomb Victim Center.Nationwide, there are believed to be some
1,600 South Korean survivors still alive, Jeong said -- with 82 of them
in residence at the center.Seoul enacted a special law in 2016 to help
the survivors -- including a monthly stipend of around $72 -- but it
provides no assistance to their offspring or extended families."There
are many second- and third-generation descendants affected by the
bombings and suffering from congenital illnesses," said Jeong.A
provision to support them "must be included" in future, he said.A
Japanese hibakusha group won the Nobel Peace Prize last year in
recognition of their efforts to show the world the horrors of nuclear
war.But 80 years after the attacks, many survivors in both Japan and
Korea say the world has not learned.- 'Only talk' -US President Donald
Trump recently compared his strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities to the
bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki."Would he understand the tragedy of
what the Hiroshima bombing has caused? Would he understand that of
Nagasaki?" survivor Kim Gin-ho said.In Korea, the Hapcheon center will
hold a commemoration on August 6 -- with survivors hoping that this year
the event will attract more attention. From politicians, "there has been
only talk... but no interest", she said.
Rocket Lab inaugurates Launch Complex 3 to prepare for Neutron rocket operations by Clarence Oxford.
Los
Angeles CA (SPX) Sep 01, 2025-Rocket Lab Corporation (Nasdaq: RKLB) has
officially opened Launch Complex 3, a dedicated test, launch, and
landing site for its reusable Neutron rocket. The new facility, located
at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport on Wallops Island, represents the
largest orbital launch capacity in the spaceport's history.Neutron is
designed to lift 13,000 kg (33,000 pounds) to orbit, supporting
commercial satellite constellations, national security missions,
planetary exploration, and eventually human spaceflight. Rocket Lab
emphasized that the new complex will provide the United States with a
responsive, reliable medium-lift launch option from domestic

founder and CEO. "Our Neutron rocket, with its ability for responsive
space access as a high cadence reusable launch vehicle, expands
Virginia's aerospace capabilities to enable the United States to quickly
and reliably reach the International Space Station and low Earth orbit,
as well as explore beyond Earth and on to the Moon and
Mars."Construction began in late 2023 and concluded in under two years,
involving more than 60 contractors, many of them Virginia-based. The
site includes a nine-meter launch mount weighing over 700 tons,
hydraulic support systems, underground vaults for control equipment,
large propellant storage farms, and a water tower with more than 200,000
gallons capacity.Shaun D'Mello, Rocket Lab Vice President - Neutron,
said the achievement reflects "a monument to exquisite design,
streamlined operations, and the competitive advantage of Rocket Lab's
speed and efficiency," noting the work of more than 60 staff and strong
backing from state and federal partners.Launch Complex 3 stands
alongside Rocket Lab's Launch Complex 2, home to the Electron rocket.
Together, the two facilities expand Virginia's launch capabilities and
reinforce U.S. leadership in space while supporting future growth of the
national aerospace sector.

6 And you, O seacoast, shall be pastures, with meadows[c] for shepherds and folds for flocks.

42 And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken.
43
And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle
themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to
another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.
44 And in the days of
these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never
be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it
shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand
for ever.
45 Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of
the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the
brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known
to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is
certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.
DANIEL 7:17-26
17 These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth.
18 But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever.
19
Then I would know the truth of the fourth beast, which was diverse from
all the others, exceeding dreadful, whose teeth were of iron, and his
nails of brass; which devoured, brake in pieces, and stamped the residue
with his feet;
20 And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of
the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn
that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look was
more stout than his fellows.
21 I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them;
22
Until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of
the most High; and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom.
23
Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth,
which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole
earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.
24 And the
ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and
another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first,
and he shall subdue three kings.
25 And he shall speak great words
against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High,
and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his
hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.
26 But the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy it unto the end.

Coalition Of The Willing: 26
Countries To Provide Post-war Security For Ukraine Curated By :Last

Macron noted that European
nations, in coordination with Washington, are prepared to impose further
sanctions on Russia if Moscow resist entering into a peace
agreement.French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed on Thursday that 26
of Ukraine’s allies have pledged to deploy troops to Ukraine as part of
a post-war “reassurance force." Speaking after a meeting of the
“coalition of the willing" in Paris, Macron said the troops would be
stationed in Ukraine once the ongoing conflict with Russia comes to an
end.The “coalition of the willing" consists of 35 countries committed to
supporting Ukraine. Among them, 26 have agreed to maintain a presence
in Ukraine after the war, either on land, at sea, or in the air. This
collective effort is aimed at ensuring long-term stability and deterring
future aggression.“We held a call with President Trump […] The
conclusions of this call are simple: in the coming days, we will
finalise US support and these security guarantees," Macron told
reporters. His remarks highlighted the central role of the US in shaping
the coalition’s long-term commitments.Macron also noted that European
nations, in coordination with Washington, are prepared to impose further
sanctions on Russia if Moscow continues to resist entering into a peace
agreement. “European countries would impose new sanctions on Russia ‘in
collaboration with the United States’ should Moscow continue to refuse a
peace deal," the French president said.Ukrainian President Volodymyr
Zelenskyy welcomed the announcement, calling it a significant milestone.
He expressed gratitude to European allies for agreeing to deploy troops
post-conflict, describing the decision as the first “concrete step."
Stressing the need for diplomacy, Zelenskyy added, “This is not a matter
of a desire, this is a matter of necessity," in reference to potential
talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “We support any format,
bilateral meeting, trilateral meeting, I believe that Russia does
everything to defer it."Both Macron and British Prime Minister Keir
Starmer, who co-lead the coalition, have repeatedly emphasised that any
European reassurance force in Ukraine must have the backing of the US.
Following the summit in Paris, the leaders held a joint phone call with
US President Donald Trump to discuss the path forward.Earlier in the
day, Macron and other European leaders also met with Ukrainian President
Zelenskyy and Steve Witkoff, the US envoy for peace talks. The
discussions focused on ensuring long-term military and financial support
for Ukraine after the war. Zelenskyy later held a private, closed-door
meeting with Witkoff to further explore diplomatic solutions.Read more

NATO chief expects 'clarity' soon on Europe's contribution to Ukraine guarantees.
Brussels,
Belgium, Sept 3 (AFP) Sep 03, 2025-NATO chief Mark Rutte said Wednesday
that he expected talks between European leaders in Paris to firm up
plans on security guarantees for Ukraine, and pave the way to get a
clearer picture on US involvement."Tomorrow will be an important
meeting, so I expect tomorrow, or soon after tomorrow, to have clarity
on what collectively we can deliver," Rutte told journalists."That means
that we can engage even more intensely, also with the American side to
see what they want to deliver in terms of their participation."Ukraine's
President Volodymyr Zelensky will attend the talks in Paris on Thursday
with leaders from a so-called coalition of the willing.Spearheaded by
France and Britain, the group of around 30 countries intends to provide
support to Kyiv's military and possibly deploy some of its own soldiers
to Ukraine if and when a ceasefire is agreed. The deployment would aim to
deter future Russian aggression.US President Donald Trump, who has been
pushing efforts to end the war, has said Washington could play a role
supporting the Europeans. But he has ruled out any American troops on the
ground, and what exact commitments he would be willing to give remain
vague.Diplomats told AFP that European countries in the coalition were
pushed to come up with concrete details on what they could contribute at
a meeting of military chiefs last week.French President Emmanuel
Macron's office said Tuesday that there were now "enough contributions
to be able to say to the Americans that we are ready to take our
responsibilities as long as they take on theirs -- meaning giving
European partners a 'backstop'."That backstop could involve different
aspects including intelligence, logistic support and
communications.Trump has been trying, so far in vain, to organise a
summit between President Vladimir Putin and Zelensky, after having
rolled out the red carpet for the Russian leader in Alaska last month. On
Tuesday, Trump said he was "very disappointed" with Putin for failing
to move towards a peace deal on Ukraine.
European leaders face
tough choices as the UK and France host another meeting on Ukraine-By
EMMA BURROWS-Updated 11:06 AM EDT, September 4, 2025
LONDON (AP) —
European countries are stuck between a rock and a hard place as a
coalition of countries meets in Paris on Thursday to discuss security
guarantees for a postwar Ukraine. The war is raging unabated, with no
ceasefire in sight — and the crucial question of American involvement in
ensuring Ukraine’s future security remains unresolved. For months, the
so-called “coalition of the willing” has been meeting to discuss aid for
Ukraine, including sketching out plans for military support in the
event of a ceasefire to deter future Russian aggression. The coalition
leaders — French President Emmanuel Macron and U.K.Prime Minister Keir
Starmer — have insisted that any European “reassurance” force in Ukraine
needs the backing of the United States. But while U.S. President Donald
Trump has hinted his country will be involved, he has moved away from
calling for a ceasefire in Ukraine and refrained from implementing tough
additional economic measures to punish Moscow.Although Trump said he is
“disappointed” in Russian President Vladimir Putin and issued several
threats to try to cajole him into negotiating an end to hostilities,
none has worked. At a meeting with Putin in Alaska in August, Trump
failed to persuade the Russian leader to stop fighting and has not yet
managed to broker talks between Putin and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr
Zelenskyy. While Trump and European leaders met in Washington after the
Alaska summit — and U.S., European and NATO military chiefs held
discussions on support for Ukraine — little concrete detail has emerged
on the security guarantees to deter Moscow from a future conflict.Former
military generals and experts suggest Europe is in a bind — not knowing
the level of support the U.S. is prepared to provide the coalition, the
nature of any ceasefire or if the U.S. will abide by commitments made.
It’s also far from certain that Putin would agree to a cessation of
hostilities, something Russian officials have invariably
dismissed.“Talking about detailed operational planning when you don’t
actually have your mission is, quite frankly, impossible,” said Ed
Arnold, an expert in European Security at the Royal United Services
Institute in London and a former military planner. Why Europeans believe a
ceasefire is necessary-The “coalition of the willing” is a broad term
for about 30 nations supporting Ukraine, but the so-called “reassurance
force” that would provide security guarantees to Kyiv is a subset of
that group.French President Emmanuel Macron said Thursday that 26 of
those countries — including the U.K. and France — have pledged to deploy
troops as a part of that force once there is a ceasefire to deter Putin
from attacking again. There is “no suggestion” that any troops will be
deployed without a ceasefire because it’s too risky, said François
Heisbourg, special adviser at the Foundation for Strategic Research in
Paris.Despite Zelenskyy signaling his willingness to talk, a ceasefire
agreement is not currently in the cards — not least because of the
positions of the U.S. and Russian presidents. At his Aug. 18 meeting with
European leaders at the White House — three days after meeting Putin —
Trump walked back his previous demands for a ceasefire in Ukraine and
said he thought a peace agreement was preferable. The comments marked a
shift toward the Russian position from Trump and would allow Moscow to
fight on in Ukraine while peace negotiations are underway.Russian
Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov later suggested an end to hostilities was
even further away, stating that Moscow will not accept Zelenskyy’s
signature on any peace agreement as Russia considers him to be an
illegitimate president.“If Putin doesn’t want a ceasefire — and if Trump
doesn’t call for a ceasefire — what are the chances of a ceasefire
happening?” asked Heisbourg. What a European security guarantee for
Ukraine could look like-Even if a ceasefire or peace agreement for
Ukraine were implemented, it’s not clear it would be a sufficient
deterrent to Putin and it would still be “very, very risky” for European
nations to deploy troops, said Arnold at RUSI.Such an operation hinges
on the U.S. providing intelligence support and the deterrent effect of
U.S. airpower in countries outside Ukraine. The Western appetite to
potentially shoot down Russian missiles violating a ceasefire or target
launchers firing them from within Russia is “close to zero,” said
Heisbourg.Any response to a ceasefire violation, he said, would likely
depend on “how many Western soldiers the Russians would have actually
killed...and nobody wants to think about that too much in advance.”In
March, Starmer told allies that a force for Ukraine would need at least
10,000 troops, but that would potentially require around 30,000 troops
when taking into account those on rotation and rest.As a coalition
leader, the U.K. should look at contributing a brigade of 5,000 soldiers
which would become 15,000 when taking into account rest and rotation,
said Arnold. That figure would account for about 30% of the deployable
capacity of the British Army, he said, and potentially create a “tricky”
problem whereby the U.K. deploys more forces on behalf of non-NATO ally
Ukraine than it does for NATO allies such as Estonia.European officials
have indicated that the troops could be involved in training Ukrainian
soldiers and likely based away from the frontlines although the risk of
Russian missile and drone strikes would remain high. But there would be
“zero credibility” if Western troops were put in various Ukrainian towns
without a clear mission or purpose, said Ben Hodges, former commanding
general of the U.S. Army in Europe.“That will not impress the Russians
at all,” he added.US as a reliable partner-European leaders are also
grappling with the question of whether to take Trump and his officials
at their word while also eyeing the rise of populist parties —
particularly in the U.K., France and Germany — which may not share the
same commitment to Ukraine as current political leadership. That means
the future of any security guarantees for Kyiv could be extremely
fragile. There is “absolutely no guarantee” that Trump will abide by
commitments made to European nations over Ukraine, said Arnold, pointing
to Trump’s withdrawal from previous agreements, including the Paris
climate agreement and Iran’s nuclear deal. That means European nations
cannot rely on him ordering U.S. jets into action in the event of a
ceasefire violation because “at one time he may say yes, at another time
he may say no,” Arnold said. With NATO membership for Kyiv ruled out by
Trump and a host of hurdles to overcome to implement security guarantees
for Ukraine, European leaders may decide to navigate the situation by
spending “a lot more money on weapons” for Kyiv, said Heisbourg.Arnold
agreed, adding that the best option could be to give Kyiv “loads of guns
and loads of ammo.”“There’s no easy way out,” he said. “None of the
options, especially for the Europeans, are good.”___This version has
corrected to say the European leaders meeting was three days after the
Trump-Putin summit, not one day.Burrows covers security, defense and

EU Peace, Security and Defence-Working for a safe Europe and a stable world-21.03.2025 Strategic Communications
The
global security environment is becoming more contested, complex and
interconnected. As armed conflicts and civil wars re-emerge even on the
EU’s neighbourhood, new and unconventional security threats have emerged
or grown stronger, including cyber-attacks, hybrid threats, terrorism,
disinformation, climate change or artificial intelligence. In an
increasingly interconnected world, Europe’s security starts abroad.
European citizens expect and deserve to live in a safe and stable
environment. In the face of increased global instability, the EU needs
to take more responsibility for its own security and increase its
capacity to act autonomously. There is a strong link between what happens
outside of the EU’s borders and security within Europe. In a rapidly
changing world, security challenges have become more complex,
multidimensional. No EU Member State can face these threats alone. When
it comes to security, the interests of all Member States are inseparably
linked. The EU made security a priority in its Global Strategy and has
been working over the past years to create the conditions for Member
States to collaborate more closely with each other on security and
defence. A lot of progress has been achieved – more work will
consolidate it.
A Strategic Compass for Security and Defence
The
European Union and its Member States formally approved the Strategic
Compass in 2022, just a few weeks after the return of high-intensity war
on our continent. Since then, the global threat landscape has become
even more alarming. The Strategic Compass is an ambitious plan of action
for strengthening the EU's security and defence policy by 2030. It's an
EU security and defence strategy to advance towards a common
forward-looking strategic culture as well. The strength of our Union lies
in unity, solidarity and determination. The objective of the Strategic
Compass is to make the EU a stronger and more capable security provider.
The EU needs to be able to protect its citizens and to contribute to
international peace and security. This is all the more important at a
time when war has returned to Europe, following the unjustified and
unprovoked Russian aggression against Ukraine, as well as of major
geopolitical shifts. This Strategic Compass will enhance the EU’s
strategic autonomy and its ability to work with partners to safeguard
its values and interests.A stronger and more capable EU in security and
defence will contribute positively to global and transatlantic security
and is complementary to NATO, which remains the foundation of collective
defence for its members. It will also intensify support for the global
rules-based order, with the United Nations at its core. The Strategic
Compass provides a shared assessment of the strategic environment in
which the EU is operating and of the threats and challenges the Union
faces. The document makes concrete and actionable proposals, with a very
precise timetable for implementation, in order to improve the EU's
ability to act decisively in crises and to defend its security and its
citizens. The Compass covers all the aspects of the security and defence
policy and is structured around four pillars: act, invest, partner and
secure.
Military capabilities
On 19 November 2007, the
Council of the European Union (EU) approved the Progress Catalogue 2007,
the culmination of the process launched in the wake of the approval of
the Headline Goal 2010. The Catalogue identifies quantitative and
qualitative military capability shortfalls on the basis of the
requirements set out in the Requirements Catalogue 2005 and the
contributions compiled in the Force Catalogue 2007. It analyses their
potential implications for military tasks to be carried out in crisis
management operations. The overall conclusion of the Progress Catalogue
2007 is that the EU, with a view to 2010, has the capability to conduct
the full spectrum of military CSDP operations within the parameters of
the Strategic Planning Assumptions, with different levels of operational
risk arising from the identified shortfalls. Some of the shortfalls
identified are regarded as critical; they relate to the capability to
transport forces to theatre, to deploy them in theatre, to protect them
and to acquire information superiority. On that basis, a Capability
Development Plan (CDP) was submitted on 8 July 2008 to the Steering
Board of the European Defence Agency (EDA) composed of Member States'
"Capabilities" chiefs. The Board endorsed the CDP conclusions and
started work on an initial list of priority capability areas. The EDA,
the Member States, the EU Military Committee (EUMC) the EU Military
Staff (EUMS) and the General Secretariat of the Council will all
cooperate in this task.At the Cologne European Council in June 1999, EU
leaders agreed that "the Union must have the capacity for autonomous
action, backed by credible military forces, the means to decide to use
them, and the readiness to do so, in order to respond to international
crises without prejudice to actions by NATO".At the European Council in
Helsinki in December 1999, the so-called Helsinki Headline Goal was
established, setting amongst others the following targets:co-operating
voluntarily in EU-led operations, Member States must be able, by 2003,
to deploy within 60 days and sustain for at least 1 year military forces

up to 50,000-60,000 persons capable of the full range of tasks stated in
Article 17 of the Treaty on European Union (TEU).new political and
military bodies and structures will be established within the Council to
enable the Union to ensure the necessary political guidance and
strategic direction to such operations, while respecting the single
institutional framework. In May 2003, the Council confirmed that the EU
now has operational capability across the full range of Petersberg
tasks, limited and constrained by recognised shortfalls. These
limitations and/or constraints are on deployment time and high risk may
arise at the upper end of the spectrum of scale and intensity, in
particular when conducting concurrent operations. These limitations and
constraints on full achievement of the Headline and Capability Goals
could be alleviated if the recommendations on meeting the shortfalls are
followed-up.
A Security and Defence policy fit for the future-07.12.2022 Strategic Communications
The
EU is facing increasing threats and challenges, ranging from
conventional to transnational threats including hybrid threats,
cyber-attacks and pervasive and persistent instability and conflict in
its immediate vicinity and beyond. At the same time, climate change is
exacerbating conflicts and instability in fragile societies, while
melting ice in the Arctic is turning the region into a geopolitical
flashpoint, with the opening of new shipping routes and access to
natural gas and oil deposits. To address a fast-changing geopolitical
landscape, the EU needs a Common Security and Defence Policy fit for the
future. This will require new efforts and sustained efforts, as well as
more investment in capabilities and innovative technologies to develop
cutting-edge military capabilities, fill strategic gaps and reduce
technological and industrial dependencies.
China's lavish
military parade could signal an attempted shift in world order-Beijing
positioning itself as bold, global leader as U.S. loses allies, experts
say-Kevin Maimann · CBC News · Posted: Sep 04, 2025 4:00 AM EDT |
China's
massive military parade on Wednesday was an attempt to position itself
as the leader of a new emerging international order as the United States
is losing allies, experts told CBC News. The parade, the biggest in the
country's modern history, showcased powerful high-tech weaponry as
Beijing marked 80 years since Japan's defeat at the end of the Second
World War. It followed a multi-day diplomatic summit, which saw Chinese
President Xi Jinping meet with world leaders over the weekend.Xi was
flanked by Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korea's Kim
Jong-un, the first North Korean leader to attend a Chinese military
event in 66 years. All three leaders are largely shunned by the West.Vina
Nadjibulla, vice-president of research and strategy with the
Vancouver-based Asia Pacific Foundation, says the heavily choreographed
events of the past week are positioning China at the centre of an
"alternative world order" while the U.S. is dismantling the order that
was put in place after the Second World War."I think China is now again
taking advantage of the fact that the U.S. is destroying its own
relationships with its allies," she said.China put its military might on
display Wednesday with a large parade. Also on display was China’s Xi
Jinping flanked by Russia’s Vladimir Putin and North Korea’s Kim
Jong-un, a group of leaders united in a desire to challenge the
dominance of the United States.Nadjibulla says the shift is already
underway. At the summit, Xi called for unity against "hegemonism and
power politics" — a remark seen as a thinly veiled swipe at the U.S. and
Trump's sweeping tariffs.Putin closed deeper energy deals with China,
while the gathering was seen, by observers, as giving Kim a chance to
gain implicit support for his nuclear weapons program. Nadjibulla says
the showcase won't likely change hearts and minds in the West, but could
have an impact in Africa, Latin America and Southeast Asia, where China
in particular has worked to build diplomatic bridges. She says the
lavish event also sends a signal that China is not afraid of the U.S. A
bird's-eye view of a military parade as drones and other weapons pass
spectators lining both sides of a multi-lane road. Some of the weapons
and military units were being displayed for the first time, such as
lasers, nuclear ballistic missiles and giant underwater drones.
Helicopters and warplanes flew in formation during the 70-minute
parade."The message was China is not afraid of violence, that China is
independent, and basically the choice is for the U.S. to choose war or
peace — but China is prepared to deal with either eventuality because
it's strong," Nadjibulla said.'Humiliating' for Trump-Aurel Braun, a
professor of international relations and political science at the
University of Toronto, says China is attempting to "make the
international system America-proof." "In every respect, we have a China
signaling that they intend to be the premiere world power, and that
those who want to be on the side of what their version is of progress
should align themselves with China, not with United States," he
said.Braun says the show of power sends a frightening and destabilizing
message to Taiwan, around which China has launched military drills in
recent months, as well as surrounding countries like Japan, the
Philippines and Vietnam. For U.S. President Donald Trump, he said
spectacle was "humiliating." China's President Xi Jinping welcomed the
leaders of Russia, Iran and North Korea in Beijing ahead of a military
parade to mark the end of the Second World War. Cold War historian
Sergey Radchenko says that while Xi and Russian President Vladimir Putin
are renewing their ties, it should not impact the relationship between
Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump.Trump initially told reporters he
did not see the parade as a challenge to the U.S., saying he has a "very
good relationship" with Xi.But in a post on social media site Truth
Social later, he touted the U.S. role in helping China secure its
freedom from Japan in the Second World War."May President Xi and the
wonderful people of China have a great and lasting day of celebration.
Please give my warmest regards to Vladimir Putin, and Kim Jong Un, as
you conspire against The United States of America," Trump posted.Braun
said Chinese media has pointed out how "pathetic" Trump's June military
parade in Washington, D.C., was by comparison. But the bigger
embarrassment, he says, is Putin's apparent closeness with Xi, after
Trump's many attempts to curry favour with the Russian president,
including a recent summit in Alaska where Trump failed to close a
ceasefire deal in the Ukraine war.Braun compares Trump to Charlie Brown
in the Peanuts cartoons, attempting repeatedly to kick a football held
by his friend Lucy, who always pulls it away at the last minute. "That's
what Vladimir Putin is doing to Trump. He always takes away the
football," he said."This idea that Trump could somehow detach Vladimir
Putin from China was delusional, and it has been starkly
rebuked."University of Chicago political science professor Dali Yang
said Xi sharing a podium with Kim and Putin was "striking," but noted Xi
is still emphasizing the importance of international organizations like
the United Nations and the World Trade Organization.Rather than
upending the world order, he said Xi wants to maintain the status quo
that has "worked extraordinarily well for China," but simply put his
country in a more prominent role. He noted many countries are still
uneasy with China's growing economic and military power, and even Russia
and North Korea have expressed wariness, despite their alliances. "A
lot of the goodwill China is gaining is because of not what China is
doing now, but what other countries are coping with — namely the tariff
wars being launched in Washington," Yali said. With files from Reuters

Woman
killed by brother in mass stabbing on Manitoba First Nation, RCMP say |
CBC News Loaded-Suspect identified as Tyrone Simard, 26, who died in
car crash with Mountie-Ozten Shebahkeget · CBC News · Posted: Sep 04,

An 18-year-old woman was killed and the
suspect — her brother — is dead after multiple people were stabbed in
Hollow Water First Nation on Thursday, RCMP say.Seven other community
members were injured in the early morning attacks, said Supt. Rob
Lasson, the officer in charge of Manitoba RCMP major crime services, at a
news conference Thursday afternoon. The victims ranged in age from 18
to 60.Tyrone Simard, 26, from Hollow Water, about 160 kilometres
northeast of Winnipeg, was identified as the suspect.Lasson said the
18-year-old woman who was killed was Simard's sister.Simard died as he
fled the community in a stolen vehicle, crashing with an RCMP vehicle
around 6:50 a.m. on Provincial Road 304 near Black River First Nation,
about 40 kilometres south of Hollow Water, Lasson said. The Mountie in
the vehicle, who was responding to the attacks, was also seriously
injured but is expected to make a full recovery, he said.Lasson says she
"responded with courage up a dark highway early in the morning.""If the
threat wouldn't have been stopped at that time, the RCMP would have had
a very busy, challenging day today."Initial reports of the violence
began shortly before 4 a.m., when a First Nation safety officer told
RCMP about an attack in the community about half an hour earlier, saying
the suspect fled and medical personnel were needed.About two hours
later, RCMP were called about a possible stabbing in the community, and
officers from multiple detachments were sent there. They found multiple
people suffering from stab wounds. Police were then alerted about a
second scene, where more victims were found, Lasson said.Lasson wouldn't
say whether any complaints were made to police about Simard the night
before the attacks, as the non-criminal investigation is still in its
early phase.Simard was previously known to police, but Lasson declined
to say how.The suspect and the victims all knew each other, though
Lasson didn't say whether any more are related to Simard. The RCMP's
primary focus is to talk to anyone who might have seen or heard
anything, he said. They're also still working to determine whether there
are any more victims, with officers "going from house to house."There's
also nothing to indicate so far that the attacks were inspired by the
2022 stabbing rampage in Saskatchewan that killed 11 people and injured
17 others, Lasson said. The fact that Thursday marked the third
anniversary of those attacks was "merely a coincidence," he said.Hollow
Water Chief Larry Barker, who said he knew the victims, got emotional as
he spoke at the news conference."I ask the community to pray and
support one another out there," he said.Chief Larry Barker talks about
the victims of the mass stabbing on Hollow Water First Nation and asks
that people pray for them. An 18-year-old was killed and seven others
were injured early Thursday morning, RCMP say. The suspect, Tyrone
Simard, 26, is also dead.Michael Raven was one of the seven people
injured in the stabbings, said his son Jordan Hamilton and daughter
Christy Williams, who spoke with reporters outside Winnipeg's Health
Sciences Centre, where Raven's being treated.Their father was at home
sleeping on Thursday, when someone broke in, woke him up and stabbed him
several times, the siblings said on Thursday before the news
conference.Raven's lung was punctured by a stab in his back, Hamilton
and Williams said. He was also hit with a bottle, but the siblings said
he is conscious, awake and talking."The community is all shaken up from
it. It is not something that happens in Hollow Water," Williams said.
"This is scary for everybody.… This incident doesn't sum up Hollow
Water."Out of respect for the other victims' families, the siblings
declined to speak about what led to their father's stabbing.A First
Nation in southeastern Manitoba is struggling with a tragedy after
multiple people were stabbed Thursday. A person was killed and the
suspect is dead following the stabbings, which also left several others
injured, including Michael Raven. His daughter, Christy Williams, spoke
with reporters outside Winnipeg's Health Sciences Centre before RCMP
gave a Thursday afternoon update on their investigation.Manitoba Premier
Wab Kinew called the Mountie who was injured a hero."She stopped a man
on a rampage, so on behalf of the province of Manitoba, I thank her," he
said at the news conference.Six of the victims were taken to hospital
by ambulance, and another two were medevaced by STARS air ambulance,
said Dr. Shawn Young, chief operating officer of Health Sciences
Centre. One victim had surgery, and another remained in an operating
room, he said at the news conference.A code orange alert was issued in
the hospital at 8:14 a.m., he said. A code orange is called when a
hospital needs to prepare for a potential sudden influx of patients. The
hospital put operating rooms on hold to ensure there was a "clear path"
for victims to get there, said Young."It's awful to say this, but this
is our work. We receive trauma every single day," he said. "Six or seven
[people] is a bit much in a short period of time, but it's our role as
leaders to clear a path for folks to be able to assist and
treat."Mounties said there is no further risk to public
safety.Provincial Road 304 was closed in both directions south of Black
River First Nation in connection with the incident, RCMP said. It
reopened around 5 p.m.Hollow Water First Nation, also known as
Waanibiigaaw or Wanipigow in Ojibwe, is an Anishinaabe community located
on the east shore of Lake Winnipeg. As of August, there were just over
1,100 registered community members living on reserve, the

the biblical 10 plagues of Egypt on Yemen's Huthi rebels after they
stepped up their missile attacks against Israel."The Huthis are firing
missiles at Israel again. A plague of darkness, a plague of the

the enslaved Israelites.Earlier on Thursday, the Israeli army said a
missile fired from Yemen struck outside Israeli territory, a day after
it intercepted two Huthi missiles. The Huthis' military spokesman Yahya

attacks on Israel, after their prime minister and 11 other senior
officials were killed in Israeli air strikes last week.

Shi’ite partners-By Reuters and ToI Staff Today, 7:23 pm-SEP 4,25
Lebanon’s
government is set to discuss a plan on Friday for disarming Hezbollah, a
critical juncture in a standoff between the Iran-backed terror group,
which is refusing to give up its weapons, and rival countries and
authorities, including Israel, who want it to disarm in line with US
demands.Calls for Hezbollah’s disarmament have taken center stage in
Lebanon since the terror group sustained heavy losses in a yearlong
conflict with Israel. The results of that war, which ended last
November, upended a power balance that had long been dominated by the
Shi’ite Muslim group. This year, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, under
pressure from the United States, has pushed for the terror group to
disarm. Israel has said it would withdraw from sites in Lebanon that its
troops still occupy if Hezbollah lays down its weapons. But Hezbollah
has rejected any move to dismantle its arsenal. That divide has led to
tension in the Lebanese government between Hezbollah and an allied
political party, Amal, on the one hand, and other Lebanese factions,
including leading Christian and Sunni politicians.Friday’s cabinet
session takes place against a backdrop of an escalation in Israeli
strikes in southern Lebanon, which killed four people on Wednesday,
adding to fears in Lebanon of further attacks if Hezbollah does not
disarm. The Israel Defense Forces said it targeted a site where
Hezbollah stored engineering tools being used for “the organization’s
recovery.”Amal’s leader, Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, has
insisted that any discussion of disarmament happen without a deadline, a
source close to Hezbollah said. The Lebanese government said it would
come up with a plan to disarm Hezbollah by the end of August. Berri, in
an August 31 speech, indicated that the Shi’ite parties were ready to
discuss the fate of Hezbollah’s arms, but “within the framework of a
calm and consensual dialogue.”He said it was “nationally unacceptable to
throw the ball of fire into the lap of the Lebanese army” by requiring
it to tackle the long taboo issue of Hezbollah arms too
abruptly.Longstanding tensions in Lebanon over Hezbollah’s arms have
sharpened since the Aoun administration, together with Prime Minister
Nawaf Salam, tasked the US-backed Lebanese army on August 5 with
devising a plan to establish a state monopoly on arms by the end of the
year.It is not yet clear how Friday’s session will pan out. With the
army keen to avoid confrontation with Hezbollah, the plan could avoid
any disarmament timeline, a diplomat and a Lebanese source said.Any
cabinet decision opposed by Hezbollah is likely to prompt a walkout by
Shi’ite ministers loyal to the group and to Amal, stripping the
government of sectarian consensus. One possibility to avoid that
scenario could be to delay a vote on the plan. The army, drawn from
Lebanon’s mosaic of religious groups, split along sectarian lines at the
start of the 1975-1990 civil war. It was rebuilt following that
conflict and has been widely regarded as the guarantor of civil peace,
though Hezbollah has effectively controlled southern Lebanon for
decades. On October 8, 2023, one day after the Hamas-led massacre in
southern Israel, Hezbollah-led forces began attacking Israeli
communities and military posts along the northern border on a near-daily
basis. That conflict escalated sharply in the fall of 2024, when Israel
killed many of the terror group’s leaders and fighters.A US-backed
ceasefire agreed in November 2024 required Hezbollah’s disarmament,
beginning in areas south of the Litani River, the area adjacent to
Israel.Hezbollah says the deal only applies to that region and that it
has handed over weapons to Lebanese troops in that area. Israeli forces
continue to occupy five hilltops in the south and to carry out strikes
on Hezbollah fighters and arms depots.A US proposal discussed by Beirut
last month foresaw Hezbollah’s disarmament by the end of the year, along
with Israel’s withdrawal and an end to its military operations in
Lebanon. It also held out the prospect of economic support.Israel last
week signalled it would scale back its military presence in southern
Lebanon if the Lebanese army took action to disarm Hezbollah. But
Hezbollah has ruled out disarming, saying its weapons protect Lebanon
from Israeli attack. Senior Iranian official Ali Akbar Velayati last
month criticized Beirut’s moves on disarmament.Hezbollah politician
Mohammed Raad said on Wednesday it was “imperative” for Lebanese
authorities to refrain from agreeing on any plans regarding Hezbollah’s
arms.
Hosting Herzog, pope calls for permanent Gaza ceasefire to
be reached ‘with urgency’-President urges pontiff to assist with efforts
to free hostages, assures him of Israel’s commitment to protecting
Christian communities By Lazar Berman-and Reuters Today, 7:55 pm-SEP

Pope Leo XIV stressed the need for a two-state solution and a
permanent ceasefire in the war in Gaza during a meeting Thursday with
President Isaac Herzog at the Vatican.During the meeting, joined by the
Vatican’s political leadership, Herzog asked the pontiff to assist in
efforts to free the hostages, a day before the 700th day of their
captivity in Gaza, according to a statement by the President’s
Residence.Herzog also sought to reassure the Vatican over the treatment
of Christians in the Holy Land and the situation in Gaza.According to
the Vatican readout, Leo expressed his hope for “a speedy resumption of
negotiations so that, with willingness and courageous decisions, as well
as the support of the international community, the release of all
hostages can be achieved, a permanent ceasefire reached with urgency,
the safe entry of humanitarian aid into the most affected areas be
facilitated, and full respect for humanitarian law be ensured, together
with the legitimate aspirations of the two peoples.”He also said that “a
two-state solution is the only way out of the current war.”The pope
raised the often thorny issue of relations between Israeli government
offices and the Catholic Church in Israel, “with particular attention to
the importance of Christian communities and their commitment, both
locally and throughout the Middle East, to human and social development,
especially in the areas of education, the promotion of social cohesion,
and regional stability.”Herzog “emphasized that the 48 men and women
still in captivity are in immediate and grave danger, and he called for
intensified international efforts to secure their release as soon as
possible,” the President’s Residence statement read, adding that Herzog
asked the pope to meet with hostage families. They also discussed the
global fight against antisemitism, and “the importance of protecting
minorities in the Middle East – particularly Christian communities and
the Druze community in Syria.”Herzog’s office said that “the situation
of Christian communities in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza” was
discussed, a likely reference to consistent criticism from the Catholic
Church over Israel’s policies toward Christians in Israel and the West
Bank.“This is a very important and sensitive issue,” Herzog said after
the meeting. “I spoke about the wonderful communities in Israel, about
the duty and need to safeguard and protect them, and I reiterated
Israel’s clear commitment to freedom of religion, of worship, and of
course to the development and protection of the Christian communities in
the Holy Land.”The Vatican brought up the humanitarian situation in
Gaza as well.According to Herzog, the issue “resonates strongly in the
world’s media and certainly affects Israel’s relations with various
countries. I described the massive Israeli effort currently underway,
which has significantly changed the situation, the facts, and the
reality on the ground.”Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin and
Foreign Minister Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher also joined the
meeting.“The very fact that Pope Leo XIV, who has just entered his
office, receives the president of the State of Israel at the Vatican is a
very important statement,” Herzog said. “It shows the great importance
of the relationship between the Holy See and the State of Israel, and of
course with the Jewish people. The issues at hand are extremely
sensitive and weighty these very days.”Herzog added that Israel “would
be delighted” to host Leo on a visit. The audience was the first between
Leo and an Israeli head of state. Leo spoke by telephone with Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in July after an Israeli shell slammed into
the only Catholic church in Gaza, killing three people and wounding the
parish priest. The Vatican has tried to maintain its tradition of
diplomatic neutrality throughout the war, calling for the return of
hostages while denouncing Israel’s attacks against civilians in Gaza.
But both Pope Francis before, and Leo since his election in May, have
voiced mounting outrage at Israel’s actions in Gaza, with the late pope
calling for an investigation to determine if they constituted
genocide.Leo has been stepping up his calls for a halt to the war in
Gaza, which began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led terrorists rampaged
across southern Israel, murdering some 1,200 people, mostly civilians,
and taking 251 hostages to Gaza.Terror groups in the Gaza Strip are
holding 48 hostages, including 47 of the 251 abducted by Hamas-led
terrorists on October 7, 2023. They include the bodies of at least 26
confirmed dead by the IDF. Twenty are believed to be alive and there are
grave concerns for the well-being of two others, Israeli officials have
said. Hamas is also holding the body of an IDF soldier killed in Gaza
in 2014.The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 63,000 people
in the Strip have been killed or are presumed dead in the fighting so
far, though the toll cannot be verified and does not differentiate
between civilians and fighters. Israel says it has killed over 22,000
combatants in battle as of August and another 1,600 terrorists inside
Israel during the October 7 onslaught.Thursday’s release from the
Vatican was notably longer than usual for statements about the pope’s
meeting with foreign leaders, which typically offer only a few lines of
information and do not give specific details about the topics discussed
by the pope.Leo and Herzog announced earlier this week that they would
meet, but had disagreed publicly over whose idea the meeting was.The
presidency had issued a release on Tuesday saying Herzog would meet Leo
at the pope’s invitation. In an unusual statement later that day, the
Vatican responded: “It is the Holy See’s practice to accede to requests
for an audience with the pope made by Heads of State and Government; it
is not its practice to extend invitations to them.”
Israel intercepts Yemen missiles after Huthis vow revenge for attack.
Jerusalem
(AFP) Sept 3, 2025 - The Israeli military said Wednesday it intercepted
two missiles fired from Yemen, after Huthi rebels vowed to avenge the
killing of their prime minister in an Israeli strike last week.In two
separate statements nearly 10 hours apart, the Israeli military said
missiles launched from Yemen were intercepted, with air raid sirens
activated both times. Both attacks were claimed by the Iran-backed Huthi
rebels.According to the military, the first launch marked the first time
a missile fired from Yemen had triggered sirens in Israel since Huthi
prime minister Ahmed Ghaleb Nasser al-Rahawi and 11 other senior
officials were killed in Israeli strikes on the rebel-held capital Sanaa
on Thursday.Huthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said during the day
that two missiles were fired at the Tel Aviv area as part of their
"initial response to the Israeli aggression against our country"."Our
operations will continue at an escalating pace during the coming
period," he added. The Huthis have launched repeated drone and missile
attacks against Israel since the Gaza war erupted in October 2023,
saying the launches are in support of the Palestinians.Israel has
carried out several rounds of retaliatory strikes in Yemen, targeting
Huthi-held ports as well as the capital.
Israel launches new spy satellite in 'message' to enemies-by AFP Staff Writers.
Jerusalem
(AFP) Sept 3, 2025-Israel has launched a new spy satellite into orbit
in what Defence Minister Israel Katz described on Wednesday as a
"message" to its enemies that they are under continuous
surveillance."The launch of the Ofek 19 satellite yesterday is an
achievement of the highest global level. Few countries possess these
capabilities," Defence Minister Israel Katz wrote on X."This is also a
message to all our enemies, wherever they may be -- we are keeping an
eye on you at all times and in every situation," he added. The
satellite's launch on Tuesday night came two months after a 12-day war
between Israel and Iran which saw Israel strike Iranian nuclear and
military sites, as well as residential areas, more than 1,000 kilometres
(600 miles) away.Over 12,000 satellite images of Iranian territory were
collected to direct the strikes, according to Daniel Gold, head of the
defence ministry's research and development directorate. The operation
"underscored that having advanced observation capabilities in our region
is critical for achieving aerial and ground superiority," said Boaz
Levy, CEO of state-owned Israel Aerospace Industries, which worked on
the project alongside the ministry of defence.Israel joined the club of
space powers in 1988 with the deployment of its first Ofek satellite.
'No
one has a rabbit to pull out of the hat yet.'Witkoff said to hold
hostage talks with Qataris in Paris, but Israel skeptical-TV report on
meeting comes as Israel faces mounting global pressure over Gaza war,
with senior EU official accusing it of ‘genocide’By Lazar Berman,Nurit
Yohanan-and ToI Staff 5 September 2025, 12:22 am
US special envoy
Steve Witkoff reportedly met in Paris with Qatari officials on Thursday
to discuss efforts to reach a ceasefire and hostage release deal in
Gaza, though Israeli officials sounded skeptical about progress toward
an agreement. The report on Channel 12 news, citing two sources familiar
with the details, came as Israel faced mounting global pressure over the
war against Hamas in Gaza, with a senior EU official terming the war a
“genocide” and Pope Leo XIV telling President Isaac Herzog that a
ceasefire must be reached “with urgency.”Witkoff’s meeting also came a
day after the American liaison to Hamas told a Saudi newspaper that the
US has crafted a comprehensive deal to end the war and free the 48
hostages held in Gaza, at least 20 of whom are thought to be alive. And
on Thursday, the foreign ministers of the Arab League met in Cairo,
where they reportedly discussed ways to stop the war.On Wednesday,
Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer spoke with Witkoff and Qatari
officials, according to Channel 12, though Israeli officials reportedly
expressed doubt about the chances for a breakthrough.“So far, there is
no progress in the negotiations – mainly due to the Israeli position,”
one of the network’s sources said.“There is no significant American
move,” an Israeli official told Channel 12. “Hamas in the meantime is
not softening enough. No one has a rabbit to pull out of the hat
yet.”Hamas said some two weeks ago that it had accepted a proposed
60-day ceasefire that would see the release of 10 living hostages in
exchange for Palestinian security prisoners. This week, the terror group
said that it was willing to accept a deal whereby all hostages are
released in exchange for Palestinian security prisoners. But Israel has
not responded to the 60-day ceasefire offer and dismissed the terror
group’s latest statement as a repetition of its previous claims. Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has demanded that the war end only with the
release of the hostages, the disarmament of Hamas, and the establishment
of a Palestinian government that is affiliated neither with Hamas nor
the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority. The demands also include that
Gaza be demilitarized and that Israel retain security control
there.Israel, meanwhile, is proceeding with its conquest of Gaza City, a
major offensive that represents an expansion of the fighting that began
with the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attack on Israel. The ongoing war
continued to draw pushback on Thursday, with the European Commission’s
vice president, Teresa Ribera, decrying the “genocide in Gaza,” which
she said “exposes Europe’s failure to act and speak with one
voice.”Israel adamantly rejects the charge of genocide, saying it makes
efforts to avoid civilian casualties. It accuses Hamas of fighting among
civilian populations.“We strongly condemn the baseless allegations made
by the Executive Vice President of the European Commission,” Foreign
Ministry spokesman Oren Marmorstein wrote on X. “Instead of parroting
the ‘genocide’ blood libel spread by Hamas, Ribera should have called
for the release of all hostages and for Hamas to lay down its arms so
that the war can end.”
Mediator says final US proposal calls for
release of all hostages and end to Gaza war-Bishara Bahbah, who has
served as a broker between Hamas and Washington, says Trump is seeking
to heavily pressure Netanyahu to accept the terms-By Nurit Yohanan-and
ToI Staff Today, 11:46 am-SEP 4,25
A Palestinian-American
political activist who has been mediating between the Trump
administration and the Hamas terror group said Wednesday that the final
ceasefire proposal on the table is a comprehensive US deal to end the
Israel-Hamas war and free all the hostages held in Gaza.In an interview
with the Saudi news outlet al-Arabiya, Bishara Bahbah said, “There was a
meeting in Washington that, according to what I know, lasted six hours,
and it was decided that there would be one final proposal on the table:
the release of all the [hostages] and an end to the war.”Bahbah is not
an official member of the US negotiating team, but has been serving as a
liaison between the Trump administration and Hamas.Hours earlier, the
terror group declared that it was open to a comprehensive deal, a
statement that was immediately dismissed by Israel as spin.Speaking to
al-Arabiya, Bahbah said that he had “contacted Hamas about the matter
[of a comprehensive deal], and they were skeptical — they didn’t know if
it was something official.”But he said that after officials in the
terror group saw US President Donald Trump’s social media post calling
for an end to the war, they “were convinced it was official, and
immediately responded that they agree to this deal.”The Hamas statement
on Wednesday said that it was willing “to enter into a comprehensive
deal in which all enemy prisoners held by the resistance will be freed
in exchange for an agreed-upon number of Palestinian prisoners held by
the occupation.” The terror group refers to the hostages it holds as
prisoners. It also said that it was ready to form “an independent
national administration of technocrats” to run Gaza. The Prime Minister’s
Office has said said the war can end immediately if five conditions are
met — the release of all hostages; the disarmament of Hamas; the
demilitarization of the Gaza Strip; Israeli security control in Gaza;
and “the establishment of an alternative civilian administration that
does not indoctrinate for terror, does not dispatch terror, and does not
threaten Israel.”The Hamas statement came after Trump posted on his
Truth Social network on Wednesday: “Tell Hamas to IMMEDIATELY give back
all 20 Hostages (Not 2 or 5 or 7!), and things will change rapidly. IT
WILL END!”The US president appeared to be referring to the number of
hostages believed by Israel to still be alive. Officially, only 26 of
the 48 hostages being held in Gaza have been declared dead by Israel,
but authorities have expressed grave concern about two others. The
families of slain hostages have expressed fears over the possibility of a
deal that would leave their loved ones’ remains inside Gaza.Bahbah said
that Trump is seeking to heavily pressure Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu into accepting such a deal and ending the war — a message he
passed on to Hamas. The mediator said that the war “could be ended in two
weeks” if both sides are serious about the talks, and said there were
more “positive signs” than ever before about the potential for a
deal. However, Israel appeared to dismiss Hamas’s announcement on
Wednesday night, as the Israel Defense Forces continued to advance its
plan to conquer Gaza City.“This is more spin by Hamas, containing
nothing new,” Netanyahu’s office said.In a similar message, Defense
Minister Israel Katz called on Hamas to either accept Israel’s
conditions to end the war — including the release of all hostages and
disarmament — or see Gaza City “become like Rafah and Beit Hanoun,”
accusing the terror group of continuing to “deceive and utter empty
words.”Responding to Netanyahu and Katz, Opposition Leader Yair Lapid
said that while the government “does not have to accept Hamas’s
conditions, it must immediately return to negotiations and try to close a
deal.”“You can’t not even try to return our hostages home,” demanded
Lapid.
UAE warns Israel: Annexing West Bank is a ‘red line’ that
would ‘end regional integration’Emirati envoy Lana Nusseibeh appeals
directly to Israelis in Times of Israel interview, as Netanyahu and his
ministers weigh controversial response to Western recognition of
Palestine By Jacob Magid 3 September 2025, 1:15 pm
ABU DHABI,
United Arab Emirates — A top United Arab Emirates official warned Israel
on Tuesday that annexing the West Bank would cross a “red line” that
would “end the vision of regional integration,” just two days before
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was slated to hold a major ministerial
consultation on whether to advance the highly controversial
move.“Annexation would be a red line for my government, and that means
there can be no lasting peace. It would foreclose the idea of regional
integration and be the death knell of the two-state solution,” Emirati
special envoy Lana Nusseibeh told The Times of Israel in an interview
conducted in the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abu Dhabi. It was a
shocking alarm bell from Abu Dhabi ahead of the fifth anniversary of the
Abraham Accords, which the UAE initiated by becoming the first Arab
country to normalize relations with Israel in over a
quarter-century.Since then, Emirati officials have insisted that the
move was an all-but-irreversible strategic choice, making Nusseibeh’s
warning particularly dramatic, as it highlighted how averse the Gulf
country is to Israel again considering annexation. The carefully crafted
Emirati message about the potential “strategic loss” was voiced on the
record for the first time since the Abraham Accords were signed. It came
as Netanyahu geared up to discuss the matter of annexation with a small
group of ministers on Thursday, in response to the plans of several
major Western countries to recognize a Palestinian state at the United
Nations General Assembly later this month, an Israeli official told The
Times of Israel. The decision to speak directly to an Israeli audience
harked back to an op-ed UAE Ambassador to the United States Yousef
Otaiba had published on the front page of a top Israeli newspaper just
two months before the two countries signed a normalization
agreement. Then too, Abu Dhabi laid out a choice for Israelis as a
previous Netanyahu government threatened to annex large parts of the
West Bank within weeks.“Recently, Israeli leaders have promoted excited
talk about normalization of relations with the UAE and other Arab
states. But Israeli plans for annexation and talk of normalization are a
contradiction,” Otaiba wrote in June 2020.The op-ed proved critical in
laying the groundwork for the Abraham Accords, resonating overwhelmingly
with Israelis — 80 percent of whom were shown to back forgoing
annexation in favor of a normalization deal.Netanyahu ultimately walked
back from the annexation threat in exchange for diplomatic ties with Abu
Dhabi in a deal brokered by US President Donald Trump’s first
administration. But The Times of Israel later revealed that the UAE only
secured a US commitment not to back Israeli annexation until the end of
Trump’s term.Apparently recognizing the move would carry less weight
without US backing, Netanyahu hasn’t gone ahead with it since. The US
commitment’s expiration coincided with the start of the Biden
administration, which restored traditional US policy in favor of a
two-state solution and adamantly against annexation. With Trump now back
in office, though, Netanyahu’s far-right coalition partners are
increasingly adamant that a potential historic window has opened to
declare Israeli sovereignty over West Bank settlements, given that the
new administration appears either indifferent or supportive of the
move. Those hardliners have identified the recently announced plans of
France, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Belgium to recognize a
Palestinian state as a unique opportunity to finally annex the West
Bank, as Jerusalem weighs its response to the unilateral steps, which it
deems a “reward” for Hamas’s October 7 onslaught. On Wednesday, indeed,
Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich issued a proposal to annex
82% of the West Bank, and urged Netanyahu to adopt it.Accordingly,
Nusseibeh also voiced a not-so-subtle message directed at the Trump
administration, with which her government has quickly cultivated a close
relationship.WE trust that President Trump will not allow the Abraham
Accords tenet of his legacy to be tarnished, threatened or derailed by
extremists and radicals“We believe that President Trump and his
administration have many of the levers to lead the initiative for a
wider integration of Israel into the region,” said the Emirati official,
who serves as assistant minister for political affairs and special
envoy for UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed.Nusseibeh most
recently was the UAE’s ambassador to the UN. She is seen as a
particularly influential Emirati diplomat with close ties to the royal
family.“We trust that President Trump will not allow the Abraham Accords
tenet of his legacy to be tarnished, threatened or derailed by
extremists and radicals,” she added.Like Otaiba, the Emirati special
envoy appeared to try to direct her message toward the Israeli public,
not the government, which polls indicate only has the support of a
minority.Arguing that annexation would effectively amount to a rejection
of the Abraham Accords, Nusseibeh maintained “that choice should be put
directly to the Israeli people.”While the senior Emirati official
warned about what Israel stood to lose if it proceeded with annexation,
she also made a point of highlighting what Jerusalem could gain if it
again shelved the plan.Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia, are still
open to normalizing ties with Jerusalem, she indicated. But they are
conditioning such a move not just on the withdrawal of annexation plans
but on Israel agreeing to establish a credible, irreversible pathway to a
future Palestinian state. Still, they haven’t foreclosed the idea
entirely, despite massive opposition to Israel’s prosecution of its
nearly two-year war against Hamas.“For every Arab capital you talk to,
the idea of regional integration is still a possibility, but annexation
to satisfy some of the radical extremist elements in Israel is going to
take that off the table,” Nusseibeh said. She asserted that Abu Dhabi did
not come to this conclusion lightly.“When Hamas tried to derail the
Abraham Accords vision of regional integration with the October 7 terror
attacks, we were firm in our response,” the special envoy said,
highlighting the UAE’s immediate condemnation of the assault and
recognition of Israel’s security concerns, while also “closely
coordinating” to deliver more aid to Gaza than any other country.“Over
the last two years… our view was that the vision of the Abraham Accords
remains pertinent — that you can’t let extremists set the trajectory of
the region,” she said. But with Israel taking increasingly far-reaching
steps to entrench its presence in the West Bank and Gaza, she said, “we
are worried that all of us in the Middle East are moving toward a point
of no return” and that now is the time to reach out to Israelis before
efforts to maintain Israel’s ties to regional partners are “irreparably
damaged.”“The Abraham Accords’ tenets of prosperity, coexistence,
tolerance, integration and stability” have “never looked more under
threat than [they are] today,” she said.Nusseibeh assured Israelis that
an off-ramp exists. “There is an outstretched hand, despite all of this
misery, in the region to Israel. But, “annexation would withdraw that
hand,” she said.Most Popular

could cost $7.4 billion-IDF chief: War ‘will not stop’ until Hamas is
defeated; PM says ‘decisive stage’ starting-IDF urges Gazans to evacuate
to humanitarian area, but few of the million in Gaza City have left;
tens of thousands of reservists called up for conquest of city set to
start in mid-month-By Stav Levaton,Lazar Berman,Nurit Yohanan,Agencies

The prime minister and
IDF chief vowed Tuesday to press on with the war against Hamas, as the
Israel Defense Forces called up tens of thousands of reservists for the
impending conquest of Gaza City.Premier Benjamin Netanyahu said the war
was entering its “decisive stage,” while IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen.
Eyal Zamir told troops that the Gaza City campaign was already moving
forward, that operations would be intensified and expanded, and that the
IDF would not accept anything less than the complete defeat of
Hamas.“We will not stop the war until we defeat this enemy,” Zamir said
during a visit to central Israel’s Nachshonim base, where he spoke with
newly mobilized reservists and personnel from the Technological and
Logistics Directorate.“Hamas will have no place to hide from us.
Wherever we locate them, whether they are senior or junior figures – we
strike them all, all the time,” he said. “We have already begun the Gaza
maneuver. We are already entering places we have never entered before
and operating there with courage, strength, valor, and an extraordinary
spirit.”Both men’s speeches came as the IDF called up tens of thousands
of reservists for the offensive in Gaza City, which Netanyahu has
portrayed as Hamas’s last stronghold — having last year also presented
Rafah as its last bastion. The call-up — which has reportedly seen fewer
soldiers report for duty as the war nears the two-year mark — was
taking place as the IDF targeted Hamas commanders, and as Hamas-run
Gazan authorities reported dozens killed across the Strip, including
children allegedly struck by an IDF drone at a water distribution
site. The IDF said on Tuesday that troops in the enclave had killed
dozens of terror operatives in the past month who had been planning
attacks against IDF forces in the Strip’s north and center. These
included Ahmad Abu Daf, who was serving as a deputy company commander in
the Zeitoun Battalion, and who helped lead dozens of attacks and
ambushes against IDF forces, in addition to recruiting new operatives
into Hamas. Another key operative killed was Taleb Sidqi Taleb Abu
Atiwi, a team commander in Hamas’s elite Nukhba force who infiltrated
Israeli territory during the terror group’s October 7, 2023, massacre,
the army said. The military also confirmed an earlier report that it had
killed a Hamas terrorist who held Israeli hostages Emily Damari, Romi
Gonen and Naama Levy. All three were released during a ceasefire at the
beginning of the year. The military also said Tuesday that the Air Force
had struck and destroyed buildings in Shejaiya and Zeitoun, in the Gaza
City area, that were used as meeting places for Hamas and Palestinian
Islamic Jihad gunmen to plan attacks. The IDF has urged civilians, aid
groups and medical workers to evacuate the area as the offensive ramps
up. And in a social media post on Tuesday, the IDF’s Arabic-language
spokesperson Avichay Adraee urged all of Gaza’s residents to evacuate to
a humanitarian zone in the Strip’s coastal area in preparation for the
expansion of fighting in the northern city. The IDF is reportedly
expected to launch its major operation to take over Gaza City in
mid-September.In a post on X, Adraee said that the coastal al-Mawasi
area will see improved humanitarian services, including healthcare,
water, and food.He also warned that approaching or returning to combat
zones or areas where IDF forces are operating endangers the lives of
civilians.Recent reports estimate that only some 10,000 of Gaza City’s
roughly one million residents and displaced Gazans have evacuated to the
south in the three weeks since Israel announced it would empty the city
of its civilian population.Netanyahu said in a video address to the
reservists on Tuesday that Israel was “moving toward total
victory.”“What began in Gaza must end in Gaza,” he said. “Now we stand
before the decisive stage. I believe in you, I trust you, and the entire
nation embraces you.”Netanyahu has claimed multiple times since the
October 7 attack that Israel is nearing victory in the 23-month-old war.
Zamir and other officials have warned that the Gaza City offensive
could endanger hostages and soldiers, and urged Israel to agree to a
temporary ceasefire and deal that Hamas said it accepted last month and
that would release 10 of the some 20 living hostages believed to be held
by the terror group. In total, terror groups in Gaza are holding 48
hostages.Israel has not responded to that agreement, though Strategic
Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, a Netanyahu confidant, reportedly told
mediators that Israel has yet to rule it out.Instead, recent cabinet
meetings have focused on the Gaza City operation, which, according to a
report Tuesday on the Kan public broadcaster, could cost NIS 25 billion
($7.4 billion). That price tag could necessitate cuts across other
government departments, the network reported. On Tuesday, Gaza’s
Hamas-run civil defense agency said Israeli forces killed at least 82
people across the Strip. In one reported strike, an IDF drone hit a
water distribution point in al-Mawasi in the south, where, according to
local media, at least 11 people were killed, including seven
children. The IDF said in response to an inquiry that it was not aware of
the strike.Other deaths reported on Tuesday included dozens near aid
distribution sites in southern Gaza, Palestinian medics said.Thirteen
more Palestinians, including three children, died of malnutrition and
starvation in Gaza over the past 24 hours, the territory’s Hamas-run
health ministry said on Tuesday. That raised the reported death toll
from such causes since the beginning of the war to at least 361,
including 130 children, the vast majority in recent weeks.Outside Gaza
City’s Shifa Hospital, white plastic body bags with corpses were laid
out on the street. Crowds wailed for slain relatives.“We fled [our
homes] with nothing. They went to get clothes and food from their homes,
to bring clothes for their children and food for themselves… and look
now! They came back as martyrs!” said Nasr Nasr, a relative of some of
the dead. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 62,000 people
in the Strip have been killed or are presumed dead in the fighting so
far, though the toll cannot be verified and does not differentiate
between civilians and fighters.Israel says it has killed over 22,000
combatants in battle as of August and another 1,600 terrorists inside
Israel during the October 7 onslaught. Israel has said it seeks to
minimize civilian fatalities and stresses that Hamas uses Gaza’s
civilians as human shields, fighting from civilian areas including
homes, hospitals, schools and mosques.Israel’s toll in the ground
offensive against Hamas in Gaza and in military operations along the
border with the Strip stands at 460.
Rubio says US 'closely'
watching annexation plans-Shin Bet said to warn PA at risk of collapse;
Netanyahu holds discussion on West Bank-Security officials reportedly
tell leaders that PA’s unraveling would lead to chaos; PM to reportedly
deliberate annexation with ministers, though official denies subject on
agenda-By Lazar Berman,Nava Freiberg and Jacob Magid Today, 11:48 pm-SEP

Senior Shin Bet security agency officials have warned
Israeli political leaders that the Palestinian Authority is showing
signs of unraveling, Israeli television reported, as Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu held a “situational assessment” on the West
Bank.According to Channel 12 news, Shin Bet officials warned that the
unraveling of the PA would raise the risk of a “flare-up” in the West
Bank — a front that Israel’s security establishment has largely managed
to keep quiet over the past two years. The security officials reportedly
voiced concern that the PA is facing severe economic strain, saying that
“unemployment is rising, security personnel are receiving little or no
pay, and core functions are eroding. These factors could trigger chaos
and a flare-up.”In internal discussions, the Shin Bet has argued that
since the PA’s survival ultimately serves Israel’s interests, steps
should be taken to prevent its collapse, including restoring funds the
cabinet decided to withhold from the PA, the report continued. While such
a move is strongly supported by the international community, far-right
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich remains firmly opposed to it, the
network noted.Since May, Smotrich has entirely halted tax transfers to
Ramallah, which, according to an Israeli official, were aimed at
punishing the PA for a decision made by the United Kingdom to sanction
him and fellow far-right minister Itamar Ben Gvir. Roughly NIS 900
million ($270 million) have been withheld since May alone. In recent
years, Israel has deducted large sums from the monthly transfers, saying
they are equivalent to the funds that the PA had been sending to the
families of Palestinian security prisoners and those killed carrying out
attacks against Israelis — a policy that PA President Mahmoud Abbas
instructed be terminated earlier this year.In June, Ramallah invited the
US to certify that the policy eliminating the so-called pay-for-slay
system is now in place, though the Trump administration has yet to send a
delegation to Ramallah. The Shin Bet declined to comment to Channel 12
on “matters discussed behind closed doors.”Meanwhile, Hebrew-language
media outlets reported that Netanyahu was set to gather top ministers
and aides for a discussion to explore the possibility of applying
Israeli sovereignty to parts of the West Bank. However, an Israeli
official denied that Thursday’s meeting was on annexation and said that
the matter is not on the formal agenda.Smotrich, who will attend the
meeting on Wednesday, unveiled a proposal for Israel to annex 82 percent
of the West Bank. The plan would constitute a departure from how the
West Bank has long been governed. Israel has controlled the territory
since it captured it from Jordan in the 1967 Six Day War. For more than
three decades, the Ramallah-based PA has governed day-to-day affairs in
Palestinian population centers. The territory is now estimated to be home
to more than 500,000 Israeli settlers, in addition to millions of
Palestinians. Much of the international community says Israel is
illegally occupying the West Bank and views the settlements as a
violation of international law, which Israel disputes.Earlier this year,
the Knesset approved a non-binding motion to annex the West Bank by a
vote of 71-13.While dodging the question regarding Washington’s stance
on the controversial move during a press conference in Ecuador, US
Secretary of State Marco Rubio claimed the US predicted that Israel
would take such steps in response to Western countries recognizing the
State of Palestine.“We told all these countries…. ‘If you do this
recognition stuff’… there [isn’t] going to be a Palestinian state,
because that’s not the way a Palestinian state is going to happen — [by
having] a press conference somewhere, and we told them that it would
lead to these sort of reciprocal actions, and [that] it would make a
ceasefire harder,” Rubio said.“As far as what you’re seeing with the
West Bank and the annexation, that’s not a final thing. That’s something
that’s being discussed among some elements of Israeli politics,” he
added.“We’re watching it closely. I’m not going to opine on it today,”
Rubio said.Rubio then reiterated his claim that the July 24 French
announcement that it would recognize a Palestinian state at the UN in
September led Hamas to raise its demands in negotiations — an assertion
that Arab diplomats have disputed to The Times of Israel, explaining
that Hamas had submitted its response that day — one that was rejected
by Israel and the US — several hours before the declaration out of
Paris. The secretary of state was also asked about his decision last week
to bar the PA’s leadership from attending the UN General Assembly later
this month and whether Washington views the PA as illegitimate“The
Palestinian Authority has its own set of problems,” he said,
highlighting Ramallah’s “pay-for-slay” system. While the PA is engaging
in an international diplomatic blitz aimed at convincing the Trump
administration to reverse the decision, they are not pushing for the
gathering to be moved outside the US if Washington does not budge, a
Palestinian official said.Ramallah is hoping Saudi Arabia and other
allied countries will succeed in convincing the US to reverse its visa
ban, since in addition to hoping to speak during the UNGA’s high-level
week, Abbas was planning to address a conference being organized by
France and Saudi Arabia on September that is aimed at promoting a
two-state solution and will see several major Western countries
announcing their respective recognitions of a Palestinian state. The
Palestinian official said that if the effort falls through, Ramallah’s
contingency plan is for Abbas to address the two-state solution
conference virtually — as was first reported in The New York Times. In
1988, world leaders decided to move the General Assembly session to
Geneva, after the US barred the entry of then-PLO chairman Yasser
Arafat.Belgium said working to ban Smotrich, Ben Gvir from Schengen area
Channel 12 also reported Thursday that after Belgium declared Smotrich
and Ben Gvir personae non gratae, Brussels began working to extend the
ban across all 29 European states that are members of the Schengen
Agreement. The Schengen framework abolished internal border checks,
enabling free movement within Europe. But it also requires enforcement
against those barred from entry. A senior Belgian Foreign Ministry
official told the network that Belgium intends to push for Smotrich and
Ben Gvir to be denied entry throughout the entire Schengen zone. While
the final decision would still rest with each border officer, Belgium
aims to see the ban applied consistently across all the countries, the
report continued.Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot unveiled the ban
on the “two extremist Israeli ministers” on Tuesday, alongside his
announcement that Belgium will recognize a Palestinian state at the
United Nations General Assembly later this month, adding that sanctions
will be imposed on the Israeli government. The Netherlands and Norway
have already barred the two Israeli ministers.
Gaza aid group
says boy reported killed by IDF at site is alive, safe, and living

shot dead — has been tracked down and is with his mother outside the

A
Palestinian boy whom a former Gaza Humanitarian Foundation contractor
claimed was killed by the IDF is, in fact, alive and has been sent
abroad with his mother, the aid group said. The boy’s reported death drew
international attention in July when a former GHF employee, Anthony
Aguilar, claimed that after he gave food to “Amir” at a GHF site in
southern Gaza, the Israel Defense Forces opened fire and killed
him.Subsequently, the GHF said Thursday, it began looking for the boy,
who the group said is actually named Abdul Rahim Muhammad Hamden and is
aged almost 9. His ordeal is the latest chapter in the fight between
Aguilar — a former US special forces soldier who has accused GHF of
complicity in war crimes — and the organization, which calls him a
disgruntled former staffer making false claims.GHF said that to identify
the boy and his mother, it used biometrics and contacted other Gazans.
Its spokesperson, Chapin Fay, said the organization’s staff showed his
photo to people in the area of the distribution site where he was
filmed, and was able to get in touch with his extended family. The GHF
added that the boy still had the shirt he was wearing in footage that
accompanied Aguilar’s claims.“GHF has been searching for this boy ever
since” Aguilar made his claims, Fay said in a press briefing on
Thursday. “The boy is alive and safe. Falsely identified as ‘Amir’ by
Mr. Aguilar, his real name is Abdul Rahim Muhammad Hamden, his family
calls him ‘Abood.'”“He and his mother have been moved to a safe and
secure location,” Fay continued, saying the family’s whereabouts would
be kept secret for their own protection. “We have every belief that they
are on their way to a new life.”The GHF shared photos of the boy with
the organization’s staff, and outside of the Gaza Strip, in addition to
footage of him with rescuers. They also shared a video of his mother
speaking with GHF staff.“I want to travel for my son’s best interest,”
she says in Arabic in an edited video. “I’m leaving out of my own free
will, no one pressured me.”Fay said finding the family became a priority
for GHF after Aguilar began publicizing his account, which the
organization feared would make the boy a target of Hamas.“That publicity
placed the child squarely in the crosshairs of Hamas, who have
benefited greatly from Mr. Aguilar’s lies and the media amplifying
them,” he said. “If the boy was proven alive, it would unravel their
propaganda, expose Mr. Aguilar’s lies, and discredit a narrative that
Hamas has used to stoke outrage and violence.”The GHF announcement on
Thursday came more than a month after Aguilar began alleging in
international media interviews that GHF was guilty of “criminal”
conduct.GHF, which is backed by the US and Israel, began operating in
May as a way to distribute aid while bypassing Hamas. Aguilar’s claims
came as the organization faced global blowback over the chaos and
reported near-daily deadly shootings around aid sites. The IDF disputes
figures from the Hamas-run health ministry on the number killed, though
it has said troops fired warning shots at crowds. In a July interview
with the BBC about his time working in Gaza, Aguilar said he saw Israeli
soldiers and US contractors use “indiscriminate” force against
civilians at aid sites, in what he described as “war crimes.”“In my
entire career, I have never witnessed the level of brutality and use of
indiscriminate and unnecessary force against a civilian population, an
unarmed, starving population,” he told the BBC.After the interview
aired, the GHF released a statement saying Aguilar fabricated the
claims.“Upon hearing Mr. Aguilar’s claims, we immediately launched an
investigation,” the GHF said. “The findings, based on cross-checking the
timelines with video clips and on sources on the ground, indicate that
these are false claims with no basis in reality.”Fay then shared the
content of text messages that show Aguilar was “terminated for
misconduct,” and did not, as he claimed, resign from the GHF’s security
partner UG Solutions by choice. After he pleaded to be rehired and was
turned away, he “threatened UG Solutions with retribution,” Fay said,
citing a message sent by Aguilar on June 15 in which he warned that he
could be the company’s “best friend or worst nightmare.”
Israel:
‘No place’ for Macron visit if Paris persists with Palestinian state
recognition-FM Sa’ar tells counterpart Israel wants good ties with
France but move to recognize Palestine harms Israeli interests;
Netanyahu warns Jerusalem can also take unilateral steps-By Nava
Freiberg-and Agencies Today, 9:01 pm-SEP 4,25
Foreign Minister
Gideon Sa’ar on Thursday urged his French counterpart to withdraw
Paris’s planned unilateral recognition of Palestinian statehood this
month, telling him that French President Emmanuel Macron will not be
welcome to visit Israel so long as the move remains on the agenda. In a
phone call, Israel’s top diplomat called on French Foreign Minister
Jean-Noel Barrot “to reconsider France’s initiative to recognize a
‘Palestinian state,’ stating that the French initiative undermines
stability in the Middle East and harms Israel’s national and security
interests,” according to a statement from Sa’ar’s office.“Israel seeks
good relations with France, but France must respect Israel’s position
when it comes to matters essential to its security and future,” Sa’ar
stressed during the conversation.Sa’ar also said that any visit by
French President Emmanuel Macron to Israel “has no place” so long as
France “persists in its initiative and in efforts that harm Israel’s
interests.”Last night, the Kan public broadcaster reported that Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu conditioned a request by Macron to visit on
France scrapping the recognition initiative — a demand the French
president rejected. The two foreign ministers also discussed the
situation in the Gaza Strip, the European snapback process against Iran,
Lebanon, and the war in Ukraine, Sa’ar’s statement added. There was no
immediate French readout of the call.Israel has been under mounting
pressure to wrap up its campaign in Gaza, where the war — which began
with the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, massacre in southern communities —
has created a humanitarian crisis and devastated much of the territory,
and bring home the hostages held there.Amid the mounting criticism,
Macron announced that France would formally recognize a Palestinian
state during a UN meeting in September. Many Western nations have
followed in Paris’s footsteps.Netanyahu told “Abu Ali Express,” a
popular account on the Telegram messaging app, during an interview
Thursday that such moves contradicted agreements between Israel and the
Palestinian Liberation Organization, which determined that disputed
issues would be solved through negotiation.“But if they take unilateral
steps against us, don’t be surprised if we take unilateral steps as
well. What we will do exactly, I won’t reveal here,” he said.Meanwhile,
the United States has told other countries that recognition of a
Palestinian state will cause more problems, US Secretary of State Marco
Rubio said.“We told all these countries, we told them all, we said if
you guys do this recognition stuff, it’s all fake, it’s not even real,
if you do it you’re going to create problems,” Rubio said from Quito,
where he met with Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa and his Ecuadorian
counterpart.“There’s going to be a response, it’s going to make it
harder to get a ceasefire, and it may even trigger these sorts of
actions that you’ve seen, or at least these attempts at these actions,”
Rubio said, adding he would not opine on Israeli discussion of
annexation of the West Bank but that it was not final. In a letter sent
to the French president in mid-August, Netanyahu complained that
Macron’s promise that France would recognize a Palestinian state was
fueling antisemitism.Macron hit back last week, rejecting the premier’s
criticisms and warning the issue of antisemitism should not be
“weaponized.”Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Afghanistan earthquake
deaths climb to 2,200, entire villages levelled-Most deaths in Kunar
province, where people tend to live in wood and mud-brick houses-The
Associated Press · Posted: Sep 04, 2025 2:46 PM EDT |
Hundreds
more bodies have been recovered from houses in mountain villages
destroyed by a major earthquake in Afghanistan early this week, pushing
the death toll to more than 2,200, a Taliban government spokesperson
said Thursday. The shallow, 6.0-magnitude quake struck the mountainous
and remote eastern part of the country late Sunday, levelling villages
and trapping people under rubble. Most of the casualties have been in
Kunar province, where people typically live in wood and mud-brick houses
along steep river valleys separated by high mountains. Some 98 per cent
percent of the buildings in the province were damaged or destroyed,
according to an assessment issued Thursday by the Islamic Relief
charity. Aid agencies said they were sorely in need of staff and
supplies to tend to the region's survivors. Why the Afghanistan
earthquake was so deadly-More than 1,000 people have been killed and
entire villages wiped out in Afghanistan — all from a 6.0-magnitude
earthquake. CBC seismologist Johanna Wagstaffe reports on why this
'moderate' quake turned catastrophic, and how geology, building codes
and remote villages combined to make the disaster so deadly.Muhammad
Israel said the quake unleashed a landslide that buried his home,
livestock and belongings in Kunar. "All the rocks came down from the
mountain," he said. "I barely got my children out of there.... The
earthquake jolts are still happening. It is impossible to live
there."Israel was staying at a United Nations medical camp in Nurgal,
one of the worst-affected districts of Kunar."The situation is also bad
for us here," he said. "We don't have shelter and are living under open
skies."People transferring injured to a military helicopter in the
middle of an open area, surrounded by mountains.A deadly earthquake in
northeastern Afghanistan has killed more than 1,400 people and injured
at least 3,000, according to the Taliban. Search and rescue
ongoing-Previous estimates said some 1,400 people were killed. Taliban
spokesperson Hamdullah Fitrat said Thursday that the updated death toll
was 2,205 and that search-and-rescue efforts were continuing."Tents have
been set up for people, and the delivery of first aid and emergency
supplies is ongoing," Fitrat said. The rough terrain is hindering relief
efforts. Taliban authorities have deployed helicopters and airdropped
army commandos to help survivors. Aid workers have reported walking for
hours to reach villages cut off by landslides and rockfall.Late
Thursday, a 5.6-magnitude quake rattled Jalalabad in Nangarhar province,
which is south of the hardest-hit Kunar province, though there were no
immediate reports of casualties or damage.Funding cuts are also having
an impact on the response. The Norwegian Refugee Council said it had
fewer than 450 staff in Afghanistan, compared with 1,100 in 2023, the
date of the last major quake in the country. The council had only one
warehouse remaining and no emergency stock."We will need to purchase
items once we get the funding, but this will take potentially weeks and
people are in need now," said Maisam Shafiey, the council's
communications and advocacy adviser in Afghanistan. "We have only
$100,000 available to support emergency response efforts. This leaves an
immediate funding gap of $1.9 million."'People are in great pain'Dr.
Shamshair Khan, who was attending the injured at the UN camp in Nurgal,
said his own condition had deteriorated after seeing the suffering of
others."Neither these medicines are enough nor these services," he said.
"These people need more medicine and tents. They need food and clean
drinking water. These people are in great pain."She is the first female
minister to visit Afghanistan on a humanitarian mission since the
Taliban seized power in 2021, and the first high-ranking foreign
official to travel there since the quake.Aid organizations describe the
latest disaster as a crisis within a crisis. Afghanistan was already
struggling with drought, a weak economy and the recent return of some
two million Afghans from neighbouring countries.
Village wiped
out, just one survivor: Sudan armed group seeks help as landslide kills
at least 1,000-reuters • September 3, 2025, 21:22:45 IST
An armed
group that controls part of western Sudan appealed on Tuesday for
foreign help in recovering bodies and rescuing residents from torrential
rain, after it said at least 1,000 people were killed when a landslide
buried a mountain village.Only one person survived the destruction of
the village of Tarseen in the mountainous Jebel Marra area of the Darfur
region, said the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army.SLM/A, which has long
controlled and governed an autonomous portion of Jebel Marra, appealed
to the United Nations and international aid agencies to help collect the
bodies of victims, including men, women and children."Tarseen, famed
for its citrus production, has now been completely levelled to the
ground," the group said in a statement. Continuing rains have made
travel in the region difficult and could impede any rescue or aid
efforts.“Nearby villagers are overwhelmed with fear that a similar fate
might befall them if the … torrential rainfall persists, which
underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive evacuation plan and
provision of emergency shelter,” the group’s leader, Abdelwahid Mohamed
Nur, said in a separate appeal.A statement by the U.N.’s resident
coordinator put the death toll at between 300 and 1,000, citing local
reports.Arjimand Hussain, regional response manager for the development
group Plan International, said the last 45 km of the route to Tarseen
were impassable to motor vehicles and could only be negotiated on foot
or by donkey.Nine bodies were recovered by volunteers, said Abdelhafiz
Ali from the Jebel Marra Emergency Room, who noted that the village had
hosted hundreds of people displaced by fighting. The SLM/A has remained
neutral in the battle between the main enemies in Sudan’s civil war, the
Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The two foes
are fighting over control of al-Fashir, capital of North Darfur state,
which is under siege from the RSF and has suffered famine.Residents of
al-Fashir and nearby areas have sought shelter in Jebel Marra, though
food, shelter, and medical supplies are insufficient and hundreds of
thousands have been exposed to the rains. Tawila, where most have
arrived, is in the throes of a cholera outbreak, as are other parts of
Darfur. The two-year civil war has left more than half of Sudan’s
population facing crisis levels of hunger and driven millions from their
homes, leaving them especially exposed to the country’s damaging annual
floods.Sudan’s army-controlled government expressed its condolences and
willingness to assist. The prime minister of a newly-installed
RSF-controlled rival government, Mohamed Hassan al-Taishi, said he would
be coordinating with the SLM/A on the delivery of aid supplies to the
area.Pope Leo sent his condolences and said he was praying for those
affected, according to a Vatican statement. At least 43 people killed,

Pakistan’s Punjab
province battered by its biggest flood with 2 million people at risk-By
Staff The Associated Press-Posted August 31, 2025 1:46 pm
Pakistan’s
eastern Punjab province is dealing with the biggest flood in its
history, a senior official said Sunday, as water levels of rivers rise
to all-time highs.Global warming has worsened monsoon rains this year in
Pakistan, one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change,
according to a new study. Downpours and cloudbursts have triggered flash
floods and landslides across the mountainous north and northwest in
recent months.Residents in eastern Punjab have also experienced abnormal
amounts of rain, as well as cross-border flooding after India released
water from swollen rivers and its overflowing dams into Pakistan’s
low-lying regions.“This is the biggest flood in the history of the
Punjab. The flood has affected 2 million people. It’s the first time
that the three rivers — Sutlej, Chenab, and Ravi — have carried such
high levels of water,” the senior minister for the province, Maryam
Aurangzeb, told a press conference on Sunday.Local authorities were
evacuating people and using educational institutions, police and
security facilities as rescue camps, she said. Pakistani TV channels
showed people clambering into rescue boats and sailing across fully
submerged farmland to safety. Others loaded belongings into boats,
salvaging what remained from damaged homes, now abandoned.“The Foreign
Ministry is collecting data regarding India’s deliberate release of
water into Pakistan,” Aurangzeb said. There was no immediate comment
from India.India had alerted Pakistan to the possibility of cross-border
flooding last week, the first public diplomatic contact between the
rivals since a crisis brought them close to war in May.Punjab, home to
some 150 million people, is a vital part of the country’s agricultural
sector and is Pakistan’s main wheat producer. Ferocious flooding in 2022
wiped out huge swathes of crops in the east and south of the country,
leading Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to warn that the country faced
food shortages.Figures from Pakistan’s national weather center show that
Punjab received 26.5% more monsoon rain between July 1 and Aug. 27,
compared to the same period last year.‘We cannot fight the water or stop
it’In Multan, authorities installed explosives at five key embankments
to divert water away from the city, if needed, ahead of a massive wave
on its way from the Chenab River.Multan Commissioner Amir Kareem Khan
said drones were used to monitor low-lying areas while teams tried to
persuade residents who had not yet evacuated to do so.“The water is
coming in large quantities — we cannot fight it, we cannot stop it,”
Deputy Commissioner Wasim Hamad Sindhu said, appealing on people to seek
shelter in government-run camps.Resident Emaan Fatima went to a camp
after water surrounded her home.“Our animals are starving, and we are
also not getting food anywhere else,” she said. “We are not sitting here
by choice. Our houses are in danger. We are very worried.”Pakistan’s
disaster management authority said 849 people have been killed and 1,130
injured nationwide in rain-related incidents since June 26.The chief
minister of southern Sindh province, Murad Ali Shah, said he had
instructed the Irrigation Department to get ready for a “super flood” at
barrages.“We call it a super flood when the water level exceeds 900,000

UN refugee chief urges Pakistan to pause Afghan expulsions after quake.by AFP Staff Writers.
Geneva
(AFP) Sept 3, 2025-The UN refugee chief called on Pakistan Wednesday to
pause its mass expulsions of Afghan refugees after an earthquake in
eastern Afghanistan killed nearly 1,500.Thousands of Afghans who were
registered as refugees have surged over the border from Pakistan in
recent days, with returns escalating despite the weekend's deadly
earthquake in Afghanistan, according to officials."Given the
circumstances, I appeal to the (government of Pakistan) to pause the
implementation of the Illegal Foreigners Repatriation Plan," Filippo
Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, said on X.His appeal came as
rescue teams continued struggling Wednesday to reach survivors after a
shallow magnitude-6.0 earthquake hit the mountainous region bordering
Pakistan late on Sunday, collapsing mud-brick homes on families as they
slept. The earthquake killed a total of 1,469 people and injured more
than 3,700, according to a new toll from Taliban authorities, making it
one of the deadliest in decades to hit the impoverished country.Grandi
said on X that the earthquake had "affected more than 500,000 people in
eastern Afghanistan", stressing that "aid from donors, including
Pakistan, is vital and welcome".Pakistan has hosted Afghans fleeing
violence for more than four decades, from the Soviet invasion to the
2021 Taliban takeover.Various cohorts of Afghans have found differing
degrees of stability, including access to work and education, in
Pakistan. Some were born and raised there, while others transited en
route to resettlement in the West. However, Pakistan's government, citing
an uptick in violent attacks and insurgent campaigns, launched a
crackdown in 2023 to evict them, painting the population as "terrorists
and criminals".More than 1.2 million Afghans have since been forced to
return from Pakistan, including more than 443,000 this year alone,
according to the United Nations. The crackdown has most recently targeted
an estimated 1.3 million refugees with Proof of Registration (PoR)
cards issued by the UN refugee agency UNHCR. Islamabad has set a
deadline of September 1 for them to leave or face arrest and
deportation.UNHCR spokesman Babar Baloch told reporters in Geneva on
Tuesday that the refugee agency was "preparing for significantly more
returns in the coming days" due to the deadline."These people, already
with very little resources, are now returning to a disaster zone," he
said.

deadly earthquake in Afghanistan.Pakistan has hosted Afghans fleeing

government, citing an uptick in violent attacks and insurgent campaigns,
launched a crackdown in 2023 to evict them, painting the population as

alone, according to the United Nations. The crackdown has most recently
targeted an estimated 1.3 million refugees with UNHCR-issued Proof of
Registration (PoR) cards, with Islamabad setting a deadline of September
1 for them to leave or face arrest and deportation. At the Chaman border
crossing, "more than 4,000 people have left ever since the deadline
ended", local administrator Habib Bangulzai told AFP.In Spin Boldak on
the Afghan side, migrant registration official Abdul Latif Hakimi
estimated that "250 to 300 families are returning" daily since August
31.At the Torkham crossing further north, more than 6,300 PoR holders
returned on Tuesday alone, according to authorities managing the
terminal. They estimated that nearly 63,000 PoR cardholders have entered
Afghanistan since April.Afghan refugees, some awaiting relocation
overseas, reported police raids as well as extortion and harassment by
authorities in the lead-up to the latest deadline.Convoys of Afghan
families, fearing arrest, detention and separation, headed to the
border. The most recent data from the UNHCR shows an uptick of crossings
in August, with a surge between August 24 and 30 of 25,490 Afghan
returnees, of which 13,525 were PoR holders.Afghan returnee Khan Wali
told AFP he was unable to work in the eastern city of Lahore and faced
constant harassment."Police used to detain us repeatedly. They seized
our belongings," he said from the Spin Boldak crossing. An Afghan PoR
holder in Peshawar told AFP the situation was easier in that city, which
borders Afghanistan and is held by Pakistan's political
opposition. However, she said "people are facing hell" in the capital
Islamabad. The latest expulsions come as already impoverished Afghanistan
responds to a devastating 6.0 earthquake that wiped out villages along
the border that were home to many recently expelled migrants.More than
1,400 people were killed in the disaster.Analysts say the evictions are
designed to pressure neighbouring Afghanistan's Taliban administration,
which Islamabad blames for fuelling a rise in border attacks. The Afghan
Taliban denies involvement.
