Anthropic says Chinese state hackers deployed AI for autonomous attack.

Some 15,000 years ago, the Carmel plain in northern Israel was covered in lakes and marshes, attracting a high variety of waterfowl, much of which ended up on the tables of the region’s inhabitants, a new study published last week in the International Journal of Osteoarchaeology has found.Coming from the United Kingdom, the paper’s lead author Dr. Linda Amos said she has always enjoyed a roasted turkey for the winter holidays. This festive tradition helped her connect with the habits of those ancient hunter-gatherers whose practices allowed the researchers to learn more about the natural environment of the region.“Every winter, they ate ducks,” Amos from the University of Haifa and Christian-Albrechts-Universität in Kiel, Germany, told The Times of Israel over a phone interview. “It resonates with me that in that season, they would know this delicious bird came back. I can imagine them on a foggy morning, getting up, going out, and hunting ducks, as they had heard they had arrived.”Prof. Mina Weinstein-Evron and Prof. Reuven Yeshurun from the University of Haifa also authored the study, which marks the first time scholars have focused on bird bones uncovered in the Natufian layers at the el-Wad Cave terrace, analyzing hundreds of them.The Natufians were a hunter-gatherer population that lived in the region at the very end of the Paleolithic period (approximately 15,000 to 11,700 years ago) and are considered a critical link between the last nomadic hunter-gatherers and the first sedentary farmers in the Neolithic, as the Natufians resided in permanent villages. The site was dated through radiocarbon analysis.“They transitioned from being much more mobile and following the resources to being more sedentary and staying in one place for life, which then led to them becoming more resourceful in how they exploited what was available around them,” Amos said. “We really do see that at el-Wad. These people were eating everything.”In the past, researchers focused on how the Natufians ate gazelles, one of the main staples of their diet.“They were eating partridges and other birds, even snakes,” Amos said. “What we have found in our study is that besides taking advantage of all the Mount Carmel environment had to offer, they also moved to the coastal plain to harvest ducks and waterbirds that came seasonally.”The Natufians from el-Wad would walk at least five kilometers (3.1 miles) to reach the plain.Amos explained that the significant presence of bird bones, which are known to have precise habitat requirements, offers evidence that, contrary to modern times, the Carmel plain featured important bodies of freshwater in those millennia.“We didn’t even know this habitat existed until the birds told us through their bones,” she said. “I find it really exciting.”According to Amos, none of the material discovered by researchers in the past had suggested the presence of wetlands.“The [remains of] micro and large mammals, or vegetation, did not really tell us that there were these wetlands,” she said. “However, the variety of birds that we have in the early Natufian suggests that there was a plentiful wetland area with large lakes, marshes, and a type of environment that we hadn’t seen in any other lines of evidence.”The species includes ducks, geese, waders, gulls, cranes and rails.No evidence survived on how the Natufian hunted the ducks, but Amos and her colleagues found butchery marks on the bones. Some of them also exhibited signs of burning, indicating that the meat had been cooked before consumption.The bones were also used for other purposes.“People at el-Wad also made pendants or ornaments,” Amos said.In the past, archaeologists working at the site had already uncovered decorative artifacts made from bird bones, including impressive headdresses made from partridge bones, but these were primarily associated with burials.“Here we found that in their homes, they were making beads from all the different species of birds,” Amos said. “This means that, compared to what happened in later periods, there was no separation between the birds they thought were important in some sort of symbolic way, and those they ate.”The researchers also found a bone with a small fragment of flint still embedded in it.“This gave us a glimpse into the process, besides the final product,” Amos noted.Based on the type of bones found in the different layers of the site, the diversity of birds decreased over the millennia.“In the late Natufian, we see that there’s less diversity in the ducks, there are fewer species, mostly just the common mallard,” Amos said.“This indicates that there’s a change in the wetlands, there’s a narrower range of habitats to exploit,” she added. “We believe this has something to do with a rise in sea level due to global climate change, which made the coastal plain narrower and changed the availability of the freshwater lakes.”Today, the Carmel coastal plain is a fertile farming area.“We don’t have this type of wetland there anymore, though some species do pass by,” Amos said. “But we are talking about the species that aren’t very specific in what they need. However, I must admit that I spent two years in Israel, and one thing I really missed was seeing the ducks.”

Escaping lava, ash and gases have a massive impact on the surrounding areas and air traffic. At about 2:50 pm local time on Saturday, a warning was still in effect up to an altitude of 5,500 meters. The Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) in Tokyo warns of ongoing volcanic activity.
Sakurajima (aira Caldera) volcano in Kyūshū-The Sakurajima (aira Caldera) volcano in the Kyūshū region, which has been spewing lava again since November 8th, 2025, was still active as of November 16th, 2025. Its summit lies at an altitude of 1,117 meters. Escaping lava, ash and gases have a massive impact on the surrounding areas and air traffic. At about 2:50 pm local time on Sunday, a warning was still in effect up to an altitude of 5,500 meters. Within a radius of only 20 km there are 5 cities with a total of about 730,000 inhabitants. Only about 10 km from the volcano is the city of Kagoshima with 590,000 inhabitants. The Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) in Tokyo warns of ongoing volcanic activity.Significant volcanic eruptions in Japan in the last 1300 years-The following list shows all volcanic eruptions of the last 1,300 years with significant damage. The column "VEI" stands for the volcano explosivity index, which represents the strength of the eruption from a geological point of view. This takes into account the height and volume of the rocks ejected. The scale ranges from 0-8, with the severity of the eruption increasing tenfold with each value. For example, a VEI of 1 means that the volcano throws lava and rock masses of 100,000 to 1 million cubic meters up to 1 kilometer high. From VEI 8, a volcano is considered a super volcano. Here, more than 1,000 cubic kilometers of tephra are thrown to altitudes of more than 25 kilometers.The highest explosivity index in Japan reached in the review period was VEI 5 in 1663. The volcano Usu hurled tephra masses of at least 1 cubic kilometer over 25 kilometers high. A volcano normally only reaches this intensity every 50 years.

The Dead Sea was ranked as the world’s second-worst tourist destination in a list published last week, which highlighted the salt lake’s distance and regional instability as reasons for its near-bottom ranking.The list was issued by Stasher, a global luggage storage network that said it analyzed 101 of the world’s most popular attractions and organized them based on a number of metrics.The site said it rated the attractions based on five factors: Google Reviews ratings, TikTok engagement, airport accessibility, country safety and local accommodation quality.The Dead Sea, which is also the lowest place on earth, is a massive salt lake nestled between Israel, Jordan and the West Bank.Its coasts are dotted with upscale beach resorts and spas, and its salty muds are renowned worldwide for their rejuvenating skincare properties.However, its isolation from any major cities or airports, its unsafe roads and issues with accessibility, and its position between Middle East conflict hotspots, “significantly impact visitor satisfaction,” Stasher said, giving the Dead Sea a score of 3.51 out of 10.Edging out the Dead Sea for the unflattering distinction, the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles, California, was rated as the worst tourist destination on the planet, chiefly due to its relatively unsafe location and its distance from LAX airport.The walk, which honors celebrities with stars on the sidewalk, had the worst Google reviews of all 101 attractions analyzed by Stasher, and was given a measly 2.67 out of 10 in the rankings.Rounding out the bottom 10 in the rankings were Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar, the Great Wall of China, Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong, the MONA art museum in Tasmania, the UK’s Stonehenge, Disneyland Paris, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and Peru’s Machu Picchu.Ranking number one on Stasher’s list of highest-ranked tourist sites was Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia, followed by the Colosseum in Rome and the Eiffel Tower in Paris to round out the top three. FM says 'no undeclared nuclear enrichment facility' in Iran.

Joint Dominican-US operation halts alleged cocaine-smuggling boat.

Kyiv, Ukraine (AFP) Nov 14, 2025-A barrage of Russian missiles hit Kyiv on Friday, killing six people in one apartment block, attacks that Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky denounced as a "heinous" bid to spread terror.A Russian drone attack on a market in southern Ukraine hours later killed two more people, authorities said. Ukraine also fired missiles into Russian territory and Russian officials reported a fire at a Black Sea oil refinery.With a bitter winter looming amid widespread raids on Ukraine's power stations, this was one of the largest attacks on Kyiv since Russia launched its full invasion of Ukraine in 2022, hitting buildings in most of the capital's districts.Several districts were plunged into darkness Friday night because of power cuts.A hospital, shops and offices were all hit, according to authorities. Officials said 36 people had been wounded. Five European NATO powers vow to tackle 'hybrid threats'by AFP Staff Writers.

Berlin (AFP) Nov 14, 2025-Defence ministers from five major European NATO countries promised greater cooperation to counter drone incursions and other "hybrid threats" such as cyberattacks after a meeting in Berlin on Friday.Germany, France, Italy, Poland and the United Kingdom also underscored their "unwavering support" for Ukraine in its war with Russia, and their commitment to rebuilding their own militaries."We will intensify our cooperation in countering hybrid threats against allies, including addressing the challenges posed by drones, cyberattacks, and disinformation," the allies said in a joint statement.This will include exploring defence measures "such as drone defence systems" as well as "enhancing information sharing among European allies", they said.European countries have repeatedly accused Russia of conducting "hybrid" warfare -- a largely unconventional warfare that can involve sabotage, disinformation campaigns and other disruptive attacks.Several drone sightings have been reported at airports and sensitive military sites across Europe in recent months, with leaders pointing the finger at Moscow.Airports in Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Norway and Poland have been among those affected.Speaking after the meeting, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said such actions were designed to "divert attention from (Russia's) own problems... while at the same time attempting to unsettle and frighten our societies".The five defence ministers, who were also joined by European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, also vowed to keep up their support for Ukraine as it fends off Russia's invasion."Our unwavering support for Ukraine will continue to be a central pillar of our work," they said, pledging "to maximise support to Ukraine through military aid".They also pledged to ramp up industrial cooperation with Ukraine as well as "integrating the Ukrainian defence industry into European initiatives and value chains".The ministers also promised to focus on meeting their NATO military capability targets and ramping up their defence industries."Russian aggression is growing.
