Flights disrupted in Japan as 2 tropical storms move in-Story by Mark Hallam (with AFP, Reuters)

Typhoon Mekkhala, since downgraded to a severe tropical storm, already passed close by Okinawa, far to the south of the main Japanese islands © Kazuki Wakasugi/AP Photo/picture alliance Japan canceled more than 200 flights and suspended dozens of train services as the country braced for a pair of tropical storms approaching from different directions on Friday.Storms Mekkhala and Higos were moving in from the southwest and the east, respectively, and were likely to converge over or near the main archipelago. What path is tropical storm Mekkhala on? Mekkhala, which was previously rated as a typhoon but was since downgraded to a severe tropical storm, already skirted past Taiwan and the Japanese island of Okinawa far to the south of the main islands on Friday.Taiwan, to the southwest of Okinawa, suffered heavy rains while flights from Okinawa's Naha Airport were severely disrupted.Despite the downgrade, the storm was still packing wind gusts of up to 144 kilometers (89 miles) per hour on Friday afternoon.Mekkhala was expected to make landfall on the main Japanese islands, in the southwestern region of Kyushu, in the early hours of Saturday morning. What path is tropical storm Higos on? Tropical storm Higos' path across the Philippine Sea southeast of Japan has not skirted as close to significant land masses so far. However, it is forecast to potentially approach the Japanese mainland just to the south of Tokyo, where it could converge with Mekkhala as that storm veers east across Japan. This could result in the atmospheric phenomenon known as the Fujiwhara Effect, when two nearby cyclones interracting with each other, often unpredictably, making it difficult to forecast their strength and movement. How were authorities and companies responding? Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways canceled a total of 120 flights to and from Okinawa and Kagoshima — a city on the far southern tip of Kyushu.Around 1 million people were advised to leave their homes as a precaution, amid fear of landslides.Kyodo news agency reported that Toyota has suspended production at a facility in Kyushu because of rain-induced road closures, with Nissan also saying it planned to halt some production lines.Western Japan was already reporting heavy rains on Friday afternoon as the storm moved towards Kyushu.Officials in Kyoto and Osaka further northeast said water levels in rivers were rising and warned of possible flooding.Edited by: Darko Janjevic-Author: Mark Hallam (with AFP, Reuters)

Death toll in Venezuela earthquakes rises to 589 with almost 3,000 injured By The Associated Press Updated: June 26, 2026 at 8:56AM EDT

LA GUAIRA, Venezuela -- In cities across northern Venezuela, neighbours helped each other dig through rubble to search for loved ones, after back-to-back earthquakes killed at least 589 people and left thousands injured.Acting president Delcy Rodriguez announced the new toll early Friday, surrounded by government and military officials as she welcomed the arrival of rescue crews from all over the world.“We are going to rescue the people who are trapped,” she said. “We are working tirelessly on this task.”She said the state of La Guaira has been hardest hit by the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes that struck Wednesday evening, noting that it has been militarized as crews search for survivors and distribute food and water. The number of casualties is expected to climb with thousands reported missing and frantic rescue efforts continuing.Rodriguez noted that crews have rescued dozens of people, saying, “It brings us joy that they can embrace their families and loved ones.”The injured were pulled out covered in dust and blood, among them children. Venezuelan state TV showed dramatic images of rescues, including a woman who was trapped under a cement slab with only a bare foot poking out before rescuers slid her out alive. But few government search teams were initially seen outside Caracas. The International Organization for Migration said that up to 6.76 million people in Venezuela could be affected by the quakes, some two million of them in Caracas alone. Loyce Pace, the International Red Cross’ regional director for the Americas, said “people are still terrified to reenter what were their homes.”Venezuelans reeling from quakes-Many were stunned Thursday morning as they saw buildings reduced to skeletons, furniture hanging out of windows and helicopters circling overhead. Buildings were flattened and streets cracked open.Families posted missing-person flyers with photos of while others shared handwritten lists of names. Venezuelans abroad struggled to make contact with relatives due to interrupted phone service in the country. In downtown Caracas, hundreds spent the night huddled in parks, parking lots and other open spaces.A mother of three, Dayana Delgado, asked where the heavy machinery was that government officials had promised and said residents were the ones digging through crumpled buildings.“I want to know where my child is, if he’s trapped or in a shelter,” she said of her missing eight-year-old son.Another mother sobbed and collapsed in grief as the bodies of her three- and 10-year-old children were wrapped in blankets and carried away. Others screamed the names of the missing. Some stood in silent shock.Venezuelan authorities said they were diverting rescue teams from other parts of the country to La Guaira, which is no stranger to natural disasters: A 1999 mudslide killed thousands and is considered one of the country’s worst natural disasters. In La Guaira, Cristian Carreno stared at his charred apartment building tilting precariously to one side.“I lost everything,” he said. “There are people still inside, I imagine, that couldn’t get out. It’s incredibly devastating.”Retired schoolteacher Juan Alberto Mendano climbed through wreckage in La Guaira and past a dead body when he spotted a woman who was trapped and signaling with her hand for help.“May God rescue her as quickly as possible,” Mendano said. “When we heard the scream, there was nothing we could do.”Media reports have shared notable moments of hope among the destruction, including a young man brought out on a stretcher in the San Bernardino district of Caracas to the applause of onlookers as his tearful mother said, “Leandro, I love you.”Venezuelan TV broadcast video of a girl covered in dust and wrapping herself in a dark sweatshirt as she emerged from rubble with the help of rescuers. Caracas metropolitan rescue team head Jose Luis Nunez said she was found in a 10-story building in La Guaira that collapsed and flattened “like a pancake.”“We want to highlight this girl’s strength, determination and will to live,” Nunez said.Government and rescuers face huge challenges-The natural disaster is the latest challenge for Rodriguez, the former vice-president who took office in January after the capture and removal from power of then-president Nicolas Maduro by the United States. Venezuela has been facing economic disarray for more than a decade and many people reject the legitimacy of the political movement Rodriguez represents.Rodriguez declared a state of emergency in an address to the nation late Wednesday. She said the government was creating a US$200-million reconstruction fund for damaged hospitals and homes. While Venezuela sits near multiple fault lines, its position straddling the South American and Caribbean plates makes strong earthquakes much less common than in other parts of Latin America. The U.S. Geological Survey said both earthquakes were centred near Moron on the Caribbean coast, about 170 kilometres west of Caracas. The one-two punch of the quakes, combined with the shallow seismic movements, amplified the destruction, said Marcos Ferreira, a geophysicist and researcher at the Geological Survey of Brazil.“It is as if I am screaming and then someone starts screaming, too. That amplifies the vibration and adds to the potential hazard,” Ferreira said.Shortly after UN officials in Venezuela called on the government to lift social media restrictions so people can get potentially life-saving information, Venezuelans were able to access X. The site had been blocked by Maduro since August 2024 in an attempt to suppress the exchange of information among those who rejected his claim of victory in the July presidential election.Foreign governments offer assistance-Some 1,000 emergency responders in 25 search-and-rescue teams from across the globe are deploying to Venezuela, said Jens Laerke, a spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who spoke to Rodriguez following the quake, said the United States was immediately deploying assistance.“We have a whole-of-government response. It’ll be big; it’ll be fast; and it’ll be effective,” Rubio said, while acknowledging the closure of Venezuela’s main airport near Caracas created logistical challenges.Venezuelan TV on Friday showed the arrival of rescuers with dogs and equipment, including cameras and ground-penetrating radar, from Spain. Teams from Germany, Chile and Switzerland also landed. Turkey announced two flights will leave Istanbul on Friday with rescuers and a pair of search dogs. China also said it will provide assistance. Leaders from Qatar, Brazil, Portugal and Canada vowed to send help.Rescue teams from El Salvador and the Dominican Republic arrived in Venezuela on Thursday, along with rescuers and material aid from Mexico.“No country is prepared to provide the response that’s needed. That’s what neighbouring countries are there for,” Dominican air force Maj. Carlos Olivares said.------By Megan Janetsky, Andry Rincon And Juan Pablo Arraez-Janetsky reported from Mexico City. Thousands of Venezuelans were feared dead on Thursday after two powerful earthquakes wreaked havoc in and around the capital Caracas, trapping people beneath the rubble of collapsed buildings and setting off powerful aftershocks.Death tolls are expected to rise this morning in Venezuela after two earthquakes struck near the capital, trapping people beneath the rubble of collapsed buildings and setting off powerful aftershocks.Thousands of Venezuelans were feared dead on Thursday after two powerful earthquakes wreaked havoc in and around the capital Caracas, trapping people beneath the rubble of collapsed buildings and setting off powerful aftershocks. The magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit about 160 kilometres west of Caracas in Morón on the Caribbean coast, followed less than a minute later by a magnitude 7.5 tremor, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. As of Thursday afternoon, at least 188 people had been confirmed dead, with more than 1,500 injured and another 200 still missing. The death toll did not include those from worst-affected La Guaira state on the northwestern coast, city's airport, where social media footage from witnesses showed scenes of panic as ceilings came down."La Guaira state is a true tragedy, and has become a disaster zone," said Rodriguez.A website set up to track missing people by leaders from the country's opposition, many of whom are outside Venezuela, listed more than 24,000 people as unaccounted for at 10.40 a.m. local time.UN aid chief Tom Fletcher said it was co-ordinating the rapid deployment of international rescue teams, adding that "a massive collective effort" would be needed in a country where even before the quake, eight million people needed humanitarian aid.Canada does not have an embassy in Caracas given the long-standing political turmoil of the Maduro era, with consular services offered out of Bogota. Global Affairs Canada urged any Canadians in Venezuela to follow the instructions of local authorities and monitor local media for updates on the situation.Prime Minister Mark Carney, on social media, expressed condolences to Venezuelans affected by the disaster and said Canada is preparing to send humanitarian assistance "in the days and weeks ahead."'Like a horror movie'Emergency workers ‌scrambled over the debris of a collapsed building in Caracas as night fell, while distraught relatives sought help for loved ones feared trapped. Several dazed survivors were taken away, some on stretchers."When we went downstairs, the scene was like a horror movie," said Maria Alejandra, a resident from a nearby building, who did not give her surname."We had to climb over the rubble and everything. The building superintendent with the baby and all the neighbours coming down. But from that building, I only saw that one family got out."The quakes were the strongest to strike Venezuela in more than a century. Aftershocks continued to rattle the capital into the early hours of Thursday."Dozens of buildings have collapsed, and we are currently carrying out very intense rescue efforts to save as many lives as God allows us to save," Rodriguez said in an appearance on state television just before 1 a.m. local time. The USGS, using predictive modelling to estimate the death toll, said it would most likely run into the thousands, with a substantial probability of exceeding 10,000.Many Venezuelans were at home when the quakes struck during the afternoon on a public holiday."There was a very loud crash. Things fell in the house, jugs inside ‌the refrigerator. I've never experienced anything like it," said Coro Martinez, 56, who lives in eastern Caracas. At Caracas's Hospital de Clinicas, staff were asked to double up on the night shift to help treat the injured, a worker there said. Video filmed at the hospital showed a darkened hallway with ceiling panels hanging by cables and pieces of plaster scattered across the floor.Houses collapsed near the quake's epicentre in Morón, a small seaside town in the state of Carabobo, where there was no water or electricity. Three children were among at least eight killed in the area, municipal mayor Emily Riera told ‌Reuters. The country is focused on rescue efforts, including the arrival in the coming hours of rescue crews from other countries, she said, as she thanked leaders including U.S. President Donald Trump. Rodriguez was elevated to power after the U.S. military seized autocratic Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro in a violent raid in January.U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said while in Bahrain meeting the leaders of several Middle East countries, that search and rescue teams will be deployed to Venezuela and that the Pentagon would send assets to the damaged airport.Lost power, internet-Many residents in Caracas lost power or internet service right after the quake. The lack of cellphone signal in parts of Venezuela deepened the distress of many families, particularly those among the more than 7.7 million people who have left the country during its protracted crisis. The Venezuelan Red Cross said its headquarters had been critically damaged but that it had sent rescue teams to the worst-affected areas, warning of the risks posed by strong aftershocks. France said its embassy had been badly damaged.Simon Bolivar Airport in Maiquetia, near Caracas, was closed because of damage and that classes would be cancelled for several days, with some school buildings to be used as shelters. One witness said cracks had formed up the side of their apartment and that glass in the entryway had shattered. Power went down shortly after, the witness said."Several walls in my building broke open or cracks formed," a witness in Valencia, to the west of Caracas, told Reuters. "As soon as it stopped [shaking], my husband and I evacuated [the building]."Cabello asked motorists to clear the way for ambulances and other emergency vehicles.Venezuela lies in a seismically active zone where the Caribbean Plate meets the South American Plate. An estimated 30,000 people were killed when a powerful quake caused widespread destruction in the cities of Merida and Caracas in 1812, according to the USGS.With files from CBC News and The Associated Press

Israel making ‘immediate preparations’ to send aid team to quake-stricken Venezuela-No Israelis known to be harmed in devastating natural disaster that has killed more than 150; Israeli nonprofit NATAN sends team as ZAKA, IsraAid prepare to mobilize By Nava Freiberg,Sue Surkes and Agencies Today, 5:35 pm

Israel is making “immediate preparations” for the possible deployment of an aid delegation to Venezuela, the Foreign Ministry said Thursday, as thousands of people are potentially missing following powerful earthquakes in the South American country.Separately, a number of Israeli nonprofits said they were mobilizing to respond to the devastating quake in Venezuela, with at least 164 people declared dead and many more feared trapped under the rubble. The Foreign Ministry said it is “conducting a situational assessment with the relevant authorities in Israel and is examining possible avenues for assistance.”There is currently no knowledge of any hurt or missing Israelis in the country amid the natural disaster. The pledge comes despite Israel not having diplomatic ties with Venezuela.Venezuela broke diplomatic ties with Israel over Operation Cast Lead in Gaza in 2008-2009, and under then-leader Nicolas Maduro, it has been one of the world’s most vocal countries in its opposition to Israel’s conduct in the war in Gaza sparked by Hamas’s October 7, 2023, terror invasion. However, Israel has expressed hope for better ties with Caracas since the US captured Maduro in January.Israeli nonprofit NATAN Worldwide Disaster Relief said Thursday it was sending an emergency team to Venezuela.Six to eight professional volunteers, including medical and social workers, will deploy to the South American country and open mobile clinics “wherever needed,” the organization told The Times of Israel.Israel’s ZAKA emergency response organization said its teams in the United States, Mexico and Israel are preparing to possibly be sent to help local authorities rescue people from the rubble. The organization said that as of Thursday afternoon, it had not received information of casualties among the country’s small Jewish community, but it is in contact with local community leaders and other officials.Fellow rescue organization IsraAid also said it was “urgently responding” to the unfolding disaster, promising more updates as the situation develops. The Foreign Ministry and Defense Ministry sent a delegation of experts to Thailand last year to assist in search and rescue efforts following a major earthquake in the region. Israel’s highly trained search-and-rescue experts regularly respond to natural disasters around the globe.Meanwhile the KKL-JNF Jewish National Fund announced Thursday an initial NIS 300,000 ($100,000) to help the Jewish community in Venezuela following the twin major earthquakes there.Half of this sum will be spent on immediate emergency needs, such as food, mattresses, hygiene, medical equipment and clothing. The other half is earmarked for therapy, as well as respite and educational activities. The country had a 45,000-strong Jewish community before far-left firebrand Hugo Chávez came to power in 1999. In the years that followed, Venezuelans fled the country in droves as the government openly punished political opponents and nationalized the economy, vaporizing wealth and leading to rampant poverty, a trend that escalated after Maduro replaced Chávez in 2013. As much as 25 percent of the country’s total population is believed to have left in the last two decades, and the Jewish community dwindled to just 4,000 to 6,000, according to the latest estimates. An international outpouring of aid quickly followed the tremors on Wednesday evening, which the United States Geological Survey measured as magnitude 7.2 and 7.5, centered west of the capital Caracas. The toll has climbed quickly, with interim President Delcy Rodriguez reporting at least 164 dead and over 970 hurt, noting that the state of La Guaira north of Caracas was hit hard. The 7.5-magnitude earthquake was Venezuela’s most powerful since October 29, 1900, when a 7.7-magnitude tremor struck offshore.Threatening to complicate the relief effort, the international airport near Caracas was closed due to “serious damage,” Rodriguez said, with social media video showing the terminal’s ceiling collapsing over panicked travelers. The United Nations is “fully mobilized” to provide assistance, the UN’s aid chief said Thursday, stressing the response would require “massive collective efforts.”UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher said he had spoken Thursday morning with Rodriguez, and “we are assessing urgently what is needed.”The UN humanitarian agency OCHA was meanwhile “coordinating the rapid deployment of urban search and rescue teams from across the international community,” Fletcher said.“I am surging a rapid response team to reinforce the OCHA team in country,” he added.Fletcher welcomed the international outpouring of aid and assistance already on display.“The coming days will require a massive collective effort to support the Government-led response and help communities,” he said.

Buildings collapse in Caracas after powerful earthquakes rock Venezuela-48 minutes ago-JUN 25,26-Vanessa Buschschluter,Latin America and Caribbean editor,Leire Ventasand-Claire Keenan

Two powerful earthquakes have struck Venezuela, near the capital Caracas, causing buildings to collapse and residents to rush onto the streets. The first 7.2-magnitude quake was followed just 39 seconds later by a stronger 7.5-magnitude quake, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS), with witnesses reporting tremors in neighbouring Colombia as well.Acting President Delcy Rodríguez declared a state of emergency, and has appointed a general to oversee the emergency response. The USGS said "high casualties and extensive damage are probable and the disaster is likely widespread".The epicentre of the second earthquake is located about 23km southeast of Yumare in Venezuela. There's a 44% chance of more than 10,000 fatalities and a 30% chance of more than 100,000, the USGS added, with a significant risk of landslides and liquefaction on the ground.During her address to the nation, Rodríguez gave condolences to those who had lost loved ones in the quake, without giving numbers of fatalities.Rodríguez also confirmed that Maiquetía airport, Venezuela's main international airport which is located on the outskirts of Caracas, was closed due to "serious damage".US President Donald Trump said he had instructed his government "to get ready to move quickly" in response to the earthquakes."The two major earthquakes that just hit the great people of Venezuela are both massive in scale and have left a devastating number of deaths," he said in a post to Truth Social. The US "stands ready, willing and able to help!" he added. The number of fatalities have not been reported so far.More than 20 aftershocks have been felt since the first quakes, Agence France-Presse has reported, citing the president's office.Separately, Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello confirmed on state television earlier that buildings were down in Caracas and videos posted to social media showed some cracked, badly damaged or collapsed.A tsunami warning was issued for the coast of Venezuela and the islands of Aruba and Bonaire but was later cancelled. The magnitude-7.2 earthquake, initially reported as 7.1, was centred in the state of Yaracuy at a depth of 21.9km at 6.04pm local time (23:04 BST) on Wednesday, according to the USGS.The second earthquake's epicentre was 23km southeast of the town of Yumare and about 10km deep, according to the USGS."It's the strongest quake I've ever felt in my life," Nicole Kolster, a journalist and contributor to BBC Mundo said.Kolster lives on the 7th floor of an apartment building in the Palos Grandes area, in central Caracas, where the shaking from the 7.2‑magnitude earthquake on Wednesday afternoon was intense."It started shaking, I saw the windows moving, and the only thing I could think to do was to get between the front door and a stone wall, which in my judgement is quite strong, to try to protect myself," Kolster recounted. She stayed there "for quite a while," until she heard neighbours shouting for everyone to go down to the street."It was so strong that I thought the building was going to fall on top of me," she said. One photograph taken by an Agence France-Presse journalist shows a building, believed to be a bank in Caracas, in ruins.Colombians reportedly felt the earthquake hundreds of kilometres away in the capital Bogotá, where some people were evacuated as a precaution. The timing of the quakes fell on a national holiday in Venezuela, commemorating the 1821 Battle of Carabobo, a decisive victory by Venezuelan independence leader Simón Bolívar against the Spanish colonial power.More people than usual would therefore have been at home than on a normal weekday.Emergency services search through rubble following the tremors in Caracas.Cabello said multiple Venezuelan states had been affected by the quake."This is a seismic event, everything indicates that it had a magnitude much greater than seven," he told VTV via telephone."It has been strongly felt in Trujillo, Yaracuy, Carabobo, Aragua, Miranda, Caracas and La Guaira."Cabello added that in Caracas the neighbourhoods of Los Palos Grandes and Altamira were worst hit.The two neighbourhoods were also among the worst affected in 1967, when the last major earthquake to hit the Venezuelan capital struck, killing 200 people and destroying buildings. In a statement on X, Nobel Peace prize winner and Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado said: "My heart, my infinite embrace, and my prayers are with every Venezuelan home in these hours of anguish."This breaking news story is being updated and more details will be published shortly. Strongest quake I've ever felt' - Venezuelans describe panic-3 hours ago-Leire Ventas,BBC News Mundoand-Kelly Ng-JUN 24,26

Journalist Nicole Kolster was at home in Venezuela's capital city Caracas when her apartment started shaking violently."I saw the windows moving, and the only thing I could think to do was to get between the front door and a stone wall... to try to protect myself," she recounts. Two earthquakes hit the city seconds apart on Wednesday, the first at a magnitude of 7.2 and the second at 7.5. Photos show collapsed buildings and people gathered on the streets, but the number of casualties and full extent of the damage is still unknown."It's the strongest quake I've ever felt in my life," Kolster tells BBC Mundo. "It was so strong that I thought the building was going to fall on top of me."Kolster stayed wedged between the front door and the stone wall in her seventh-storey apartment "for quite a while" before she heard neighbours calling for people to evacuate."An hour after the quake, everyone is still outside waiting for safety in case there's an aftershock," says the journalist, who lives in Palos Grandes, a prime district in central Caracas which was among the hardest hit by the earthquakes.Despite it being a weekday, many people were at home as the quakes struck on a national holiday commemorating the 1821 Battle of Carabobo, a decisive victory by Venezuelan independence leader Simón Bolívar against the Spanish colonial power.Photos and videos emerging from the affected areas show some people in tears and others embracing out on the streets."There are people who are very sad, powerless because they couldn't get their pets out," Kolster says."Others tried to get their cars out of the building basements, fearing an aftershock might make things worse."Calls for help could be heard from the rubble of a collapsed building nearby, she adds.Maria Elise, another Palos Grandes resident, says the tremors cracked some walls in her apartment."There are fallen utility poles [outside], we have no electricity, no signal," Elise tells BBC Mundo. This is not the first time the Venezuelan capital has been hit by a major earthquake. In 1967, a 6.6-magnitude quake struck Caracas and killed more than 200 people, destroying buildings in Palos Grandes and the upper-class area of Altamira. But the ones today felt worse, according to some residents who had experienced the 1967 quake."There was a very loud crash. Things fell in the house, jugs inside the refrigerator. I've never experienced anything like it," Coro Martinez, a 56-year-old resident in eastern Caracas, told Reuters news agency.Eighty-year-old pensioner Maria Romero said: "This earthquake was horrible, even worse than the one in 1967."

Rescuers race to find survivors as Venezuela reels from massive quakes: Everything we know so far-50 minutes ago-JUN 25,26-Harry Sekulich-Joel Guinto

Two powerful earthquakes shook the Venezuelan capital of Caracas seconds apart, with the second quake - a magnitude 7.5 - one of the strongest tremors to hit the South American country in a century.Buildings collapsed and residents rushed to the streets for safety as the quakes struck.Venezeula's interim president Delcy Rodríguez has declared a state of emergency and said airport, rail and transport services have been paused. There are fears of casualties and extensive damage but there is no information on either at this point. Rescuers are racing to find survivors who may be trapped under rubble. Here's what we know so far.Where and when did the quakes hit? Both earthquakes shook Venezuela's populous capital city of Caracas around 18:04 local time (22:04 GMT).The first was magnitude 7.2 and struck the state of Yaracuy, west of Caracas, at a depth of 22km, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS) monitoring agency.Thity-nine seconds later, a stronger magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck nearby at a depth of about 10km.The epicentres were both outside the capital, but were felt strongly across the city, with buildings shaking and some collapsing.Tremors were felt as far away as the Colombian capital Bogotá, more than 1,000 km (630 miles) away.More than 20 aftershocks have since been felt across Venezuela, largely affecting the country's northern coastline, including La Guaira, Aragua, Carabobo and Falcón.The quakes hit while the country was celebrating a national holiday, commemorating the 1821 Battle of Carabobo, a decisive victory by Venezuelan independence leader Simón Bolívar against the Spanish colonial power. The full extent of the damage is still to be assessed, but photos and videos show debris strewn on the streets, while rescuers dig through the rubble of collapsed buildings to locate survivors. In some footage, people can be heard calling for help.President Delcy Rodríguez declared a state of emergency, which allows extra resources and personnel to be used for recovery efforts. In an address to the nation, she expressed her "immediate condolences" to those killed in the quakes, although she did not specify how many people had died. The mayor of Chacao, Gustavo Duque Saez, told reporters that at least two buildings in this municipality - which forms part of the greater metropolitan area of Caracas - have completely collapsed. He said 18 people had been rescued alive and that more than 500 emergency workers were on site trying to pull out more residents. The country's interior ministry has urged people to leave their homes over concerns of building stability and gas lines possibly being affected.Fuel supplies into the city have been cut off and internet blackouts have also been reported.Venezuela's main international airport, Maiquetía airport – located on the outskirts of Caracas – has also been closed due to earthquake damage.Metro and train services across the country were paused, Rodríguez told Venezuelans in an address on state TV.Classes would also be suspended for the remainder of the week, she added. What is the earthquake death toll? Although Rodríguez and other officials have made references to people who were killed in the quake, we still don't have any officially confirmed casualty numbers.US president Donald Trump mentioned a "devastating number of deaths" in a post on Truth Social although he did not provide a figure either.Emergency crews and officials are still working to rescue anyone trapped under rubble.Even so, the area where the quakes struck is particularly vulnerable, the USGS noted. The agency stated many buildings in the area are made of reinforced brick masonry and adobe blocks and the sheer force of the shaking made it likely there was a high chance of destroyed buildings and deaths. The USGS said there was a 36% chance that the death toll could hit up to 10,000 and a 40% chance it could go reach as many as 100,000.'I saw the windows moving' - Venezuelans describe panic as tremors hit-How have the US and other countries responded? US President Donald Trump said Washington was "ready, willing and able" to help, adding he had instructed government agencies to "move quickly"."We will be there for our new and great friends," Trump said on Truth Social, adding that "early reports are not good".Venezuela's Latin American neighbours have also offered aid.El Salvador President Nayib Bukele said his country prepared 50 tonnes of equipment and supplies, as well as 300 rescuers who are "ready to depart for Caracas".Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa Azin said he arranged for aid to be sent immediately to Venezuela.Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also said his country would assess what assistance it could extend to its "sister nation".Are there tsunami warnings? There was initially a tsunami threat advisory issued along the coast of Venezuela, and parts of the Caribbean, including the US Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands. But those warnings have now been cancelled. The US Tsunami Warning System said there is no longer a tsunami threat across the region from the quakes.

Magnitude 6.9 quake strikes Japan’s northeast, no tsunami warning.

An earthquake of magnitude 6.9 struck Japan’s northeast coast on Thursday, but no tsunami warning was issued, no injuries were immediately reported and no irregularities were found at nuclear facilities, the authorities said.Japan’s government has set up an emergency team to gather information on the quake in the Tohoku region and is ready for disaster relief operations, Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara told reporters. The epicentre of the quake, which was about 50 km (30 miles) deep, was off the coast of Iwate prefecture, and no tsunami damage was expected, except for slight sea level changes, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.On the Japanese 0-7 intensity scale, the hardest-hit area was Aomori prefecture at 6-plus, a level defined as making it impossible to remain standing or to move without crawling.Tohoku Electric Power said no irregularities were found at its Onagawa and idled Higashidori nuclear power plants. Nearby nuclear facilities of Tokyo Electric Power and other companies saw no abnormalities, the Nuclear Regulation Authority said.East Japan Railway said it has halted some trains, including Tohoku Shinkansen high-speed rail services, after the quake. Expressway routes in Aomori were shut for inspections.Earthquakes are common in Japan, one of the world’s most seismically active areas. Japan accounts for about one-fifth of the world’s earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater. In March 2011, the northeast coast was struck by a magnitude 9 earthquake, the strongest quake on record in Japan, and a massive tsunami. Those events triggered the world’s worst nuclear crisis since Chornobyl a quarter of a century earlier.(Reuters)

I NEVER REALISED THE JAPAN QUAKE WAS 7.2 AT FIRST BEFORE BEING DOW GRADES.7.2 - 7.5 - 7.2 = 3 X 7 = 21 JUDGEMENTS ON THE EARTH DURING THE 7 YEAR TRIBULATION PERIOD.JUST ANOTHER INTERESTING FACT WITH THESE 3 7 MEGA QUAKES.LOOK UP CHRISTIANS-OUR JEWISH MESSIAH JESUS COULD COME AT ANY SECOND NOW.WE PRAY COME QUICKLY KING JESUS.

TOKYO (AP) — A powerful earthquake struck off Japan’s northern coast on Thursday, but the country’s meteorological agency said there was no danger of a tsunami. The quake had a magnitude of 7.2 and occurred off the eastern coast of Iwate, upgraded from an initial reading of 6.9, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The quake had a depth of about 50 kilometers (30 miles), it said. JMA The U.S. Geological Survey also reported a magnitude of 6.9.The rattling occurred in an area where strong earthquakes have repeatedly been reported in recent months, including one that triggered a weeklong mega-quake caution advisory in December. The quake, which struck Japan’s northeastern region during Thursday’s morning rush hour, also mildly shook Tokyo. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, according to top government spokesperson Minoru Kihara.Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi told reporters in Tokyo that her government’s emergency team is “putting people’s lives first,” while assessing information and preparing for relief operations, if needed. She urged residents in the affected regions to use caution against possible aftershocks.

Pakistani Hindus join Shiite Muslims in Muharram observances honoring Imam Hussein By  MUHAMMAD FAROOQ and MARÍA TERESA HERNÁNDEZ-Updated 12:55 AM EDT, June 25, 2026

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — Raju Rathore’s Hindu faith and devotion to Imam Hussein converge in Pakistan’s port city of Karachi during Muharram, one of Islam’s sacred months.Religious observances during this period are primarily associated with Shiite Muslims. But in Rathore’s hometown some members of the Hindu community also commemorate the martyrdom of the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Imam Hussein.“Muharram is very important to me and I want to keep participating in it for as long as I live,” said Rathore, whose parents migrated from India’s Gujarat state after the Partition of India in 1947. “I go there in devotion to Imam Hussein.”Hussein was killed alongside family members during the Battle of Karbala in present-day Iraq in the seventh century. The episode became a defining moment in the split between Sunni and Shiite Islam. The mourning over the deaths of Hussein and his companions reaches its peak on Ashoura, the 10th day of Muharram, which millions observe worldwide.Rathore’s devotion to Hussein came from his parents. He said they were unable to have children until his mother made a personal vow at the shrine of Masoom Shah Bukhari. She promised that, if she got pregnant, her child would honor Hussein’s martyrdom by making tazias — temporary replicas of his mausoleum carried during Muharram processions.“This is our passion,” said Rathore, who has crafted these pieces for decades in fulfillment of his mother’s vow. “Our devotion to Imam Hussein is such that even giving our lives would feel insufficient.”Historical ties draw Hindus into Muharram observances-The involvement of non-Shiite communities in Muharram rituals has long been documented across South Asia, including among groups known as Hussaini Brahmins, whose traditions have incorporated elements associated with both Hinduism and Shiite Islam.“There are many reasons for this, but one is that, historically, many ruling dynasties in South Asia were Shi’a,” said Justin Jones, a professor of religious studies at the University of Oxford.Jones said Shiite rulers in several South Asian kingdoms sponsored processions and other commemorations of Hussein’s martyrdom, helping turn them into public events that drew wider audiences.Over time, Muharram observances became woven into civic and cultural life across parts of the region, where some Hindus participated as musicians in processions and others crafted tazias.Such traditions persist across the region, Jones said. However, they have become less common over the past century as religious communities increasingly observe Muharram separately. How Hindus in Karachi keep Muharram traditions alive-According to Pakistan’s 2023 census, Hindus number nearly 3.9 million people, making them the country’s largest religious minority.Organizations such as Minority Rights Group point out that some Pakistani Hindus have faced violations of their religious freedom. Yet Rathore said he has been able to practice his faith freely.“Yes, I am Hindu, but this is not about religion,” Rathore said. “Many of my fellow Hindus also hold Imam Hussein in great respect.”Rathore said he attends Shiite congregation halls during Muharram with other members of Karachi’s Hindu community. There they offer prayers and take part in rituals associated with the holy month — including chest beating — before joining processions.“Our religion has never taught us that because we are Hindus we should not participate in or respect others’ traditions,” said Bharat Kumar, another Pakistani Hindu who dearly respects Imam Hussein. “We celebrate our own festivals with great enthusiasm and grandeur and we approach this in the same way.”Both Kumar and Rathore craft tazias ahead of Ashoura. The latter’s are made from paper, glass, cardboard and other materials at his own expense. He said family members gather materials over time for use in the structures ahead of Ashoura. The tradition will now pass to his own son, who now also takes part in commemorating the martyrdom of Hussein through the mausoleum replicas.“I have been doing this not just for a few years but for about 45,” Rathore said. “I am now 52 years old, and as long as I have the strength to continue, I will keep making them.”___Hernández reported from Beijing.__Associated Press religion coverage receives support through the AP’s collaboration with The Conversation US, with funding from Lilly Endowment Inc. Trump says US will never be ‘Communist Country’ after Mamdani-backed candidates’ wins-by Sarah Davis - 06/24/26 7:55 AM ET(ALL 3 ARE ISRAEL HHATERS ALSO)

President Trump pushed back against “Communists” after several candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani secured major wins in House primary races on Tuesday.“America the Beautiful will NEVER be a Communist Country!!!” Trump posted on Truth Social early Wednesday, after several Mamdani-backed candidates came out on top. These candidates include democratic socialists Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier and the mayor’s former opponent, progressive Brad Lander. The president has often inaccurately conflated democratic socialism with communism, particularly in relation to Mamdani’s recent campaign. Trump derided him throughout his campaign as an “100% Communist Lunatic” and has claimed that his policies are “destroying New York.” Democratic socialism and communism are distinctly separate ideologies. While the latter ideology pushes for the collective ownership of property, democratic socialism focuses on government investment in workers, according to the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). The president specifically criticized the New York mayor in a Truth Social post later Wednesday morning. “Mayor Mamdani pulled through 3 solid Communists, and has received loud and universal applause from the Fake News Media,” he wrote. “Congratulations Mr. Mayor!”Trump also touted his endorsement records and Republican victories on Tuesday in states like South Carolina.“I went 16-0 last night, helping to elect wonderful American Patriots, and the Media doesn’t say a word,” he wrote. “Over the last two years, my endorsement has netted 259 Primary WINS, and almost no losses, with Zero media attention!!!”New York City’s chapter of the DSA celebrated Valdez’s and Avila Chevalier’s wins in social media posts on Tuesday evening. After Chevalier ousted incumbent Democratic Rep. Adriano Espaillat, the state party declared, “SOCIALISM WINS UPTOWN!”Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), a leader in the democratic socialist and progressive movements, celebrated Lander’s and Valdez’s “landslide victories” in a statement shared online. “Together, we are creating a grassroots progressive movement that will defeat the Oligarchs,” he wrote on social platform X.Updated at 10:33 a.m. EDT
