WHEN ARE THE 500 MILLION MIGRATING BIRDS IN ISRAEL IN THE SPRING TIME.(GET READY ISLAM TO BE BIRD SEED FOR THESE BIRDS)
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/m0bXU5Xqc5M
The
500 million migratory birds in Israel during the spring arrive from
Africa and head toward Europe and Asia, with the peak migration
occurring in March and April. While migration starts in late February,
the most intense movements, particularly of birds of prey, storks, and
pelicans, occur during the third week of March and continue into April.
Key Details on the Spring Migration
Peak Period: Mid-March through April.
Main
Migration Route: The birds use the Great Rift Valley, which includes
the Hula Valley and Eilat, acting as a "bottleneck" where millions of
birds fly through the narrow land bridge.
Best Spots: The Hula Lake
Park (Northern Israel) and the Eilat Birding Center (Southern Israel)
are primary locations for observing the migration.
Key Species:
Hundreds of thousands of white storks, along with black kites, raptors,
and pelicans, pass through over these months.
uration: The spring migration runs from late February and continues into June, though the heaviest traffic is in March/April.
The
500 million migratory birds fly over Israel in the fall between late
August and mid-December. The peak migration period for the autumn, when
the highest volume of bird traffic occurs, is typically October and
November.
Key Fall Migration Details
Location: The Hula Valley (Agamon Hula Park) in northern Israel is the premier spot to witness this phenomenon.
Timing: Migration starts as early as late June with some waders, but intensifies from mid-August through November.
Peak Festival: The "Annual Hula Valley Bird Festival" is usually held in November to align with the peak migration traffic.
Key
Species: Many birds of prey (raptors), including honey buzzards and
steppe eagles, cross during this time, along with massive flocks of
storks and cranes.
While roughly 500 million birds pass through in
the autumn on their way to Africa, the same number crosses again in the
spring (mid-February to May) on their way back to Europe and Asia.

Trump says hasn’t decided on major Iran strikes, Tehran
getting ‘serious’ in talks-Saudi-led coalition says it hit Houthi
targets in Yemen, as US continues to bomb Islamic Republic targets and
Iran retaliates with strikes across the region-By Agencies and ToI Staff
25 July 2026, 2:43 am
US President Donald Trump said Friday that
he had not decided on whether to launch major strikes on Iran yet, as
Tehran was now getting “serious” in talks with Washington. His comments
came after reports that an increasingly frustrated Trump was meeting
senior advisors to discuss launching a large-scale military operation
against Iran.“No I haven’t,” Trump told journalists in the Oval Office
when asked if he had made a decision. “Look, we’re talking to them right
now. I think they’re getting more and more serious as the days go by,
for maybe the obvious reason.”Trump said Iran had a choice between
making a deal or facing a “much higher level” of strikes, after nearly
two weeks of US attacks and Iranian strikes across the region that have
left a ceasefire in tatters. The United States says it is carrying out
the strikes to stop Iran closing the crucial Strait of Hormuz. Iran has
carried out attacks on US bases that have killed four service
members.“We’re locked and loaded and ready to go. But we’re talking to
them, so I think while we’re talking, we’ll see what comes of it. I
believe… they’re very serious. They should be,” Trump said. The war that
Trump once predicted would last four or five weeks is now nearing its
fifth month, and is weighing on the Republican’s approval ratings ahead
of crucial midterm elections in November.‘Massive attack’-The New York
Times reported earlier that Trump had met advisors on Friday to discuss
whether to escalate the conflict, while the Axios news outlet quoted the
US leader as saying on Thursday that he was considering a “massive
attack” on Iran. Two Iranian officials cited by The New York Times
Thursday warned that the next stage of the escalation in fighting
between Washington and Tehran would include Iran striking Tel Aviv.Trump
separately doubled down on comments in an earlier social media post in
which he said he believed that Russia and China were not arming Iran,
despite reports that both countries were giving Tehran intelligence to
target US forces.“I mean, I will tell you that President Xi said he will
not partake, and President Putin said the same thing. I think you know I
trust them,” Trump told reporters. “I don’t think they’d want to have
me disappointed.”Earlier in a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump
had warned Moscow and Beijing not to sell weapons to Iran.“If they did,
it would be very bad for them — certainly not in their best interests,”
he wrote.US missiles struck targets across Iran on Friday, and Iranian
armed forces responded by firing at US bases in neighboring Arab
countries and warning people there that they could strike non-military
buildings used by US personnel.Saudi-led coalition hits Houthis-The
entrance to the Persian Gulf has so far been the focus of a war that has
killed thousands in almost five months, stoked global inflation and
fanned fears of an economic downturn. The Houthis, who control northern
and western Yemen, have announced a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia,
which has diverted millions of barrels of oil each day by pipeline to
the Red Sea to skirt Iran’s near-total blockade of the Strait of
Hormuz. After the Houthis said they had struck two Saudi tankers on
Thursday, Trump said he would hold Iran accountable for any further
attacks by the fighters. On Friday, several strikes hit Yemen’s Hodeidah
port, eyewitnesses said. The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen said it
carried out a “proportionate military response operation” that targeted
Houthi military sites in Hodeidah governorate.Iran threatens US
forcesThe US military launched air strikes on Iran late on Thursday and
early on Friday, for a 13th consecutive night of attacks, prompting Iran
to fire at neighboring Arab countries that host US bases.US missiles
struck a Revolutionary Guards Navy headquarters in the Ziba Kenar area
of the Caspian Sea province of Gilan, according to a security official
in Gilan quoted by Iranian media. Provincial authorities said US
projectiles had also struck the port city of Bandar Anzali, according to
the ILNA news agency.Four people were killed and five injured in a US
attack on the Iranian city of Ahvaz, the state broadcaster IRIB said.In a
statement carried by Iran’s Fars news agency, the Revolutionary Guards
warned the populations of Gulf countries of potential strikes against US
military personnel who may be using “buildings in cities as locations
to direct their crimes.”In a statement on X, the Iranian health ministry
said 59 people had been killed and 666 wounded since the resumption of
clashes with US forces in late June. It does not differentiate between
military personnel and civilians.Iranian media cited the head of Iran’s
top joint military command as saying Iran would kill a member of the US
forces for every Iranian killed. The war has killed 18 US service
members. The Pentagon said on Monday that 100 service members had been
injured since July 7 and 96% have returned to duty. Officials have told
Reuters that more than 500 US troops have been injured so far.Pakistan
seeks renewed talks-The attack on the Saudi tankers on Thursday in the
Red Sea’s Bab el-Mandeb Strait boosted oil prices 7% to top $100 per
barrel for the first time since May.However, by around 1600 GMT on
Friday, Brent futures were down more than $4 to a little over
$96.Sources said Pakistan was exploring a path towards a resumption of
stalled talks between the US and Iran over ending the war, following a
push initiated by China.Exploratory discussions took place during a
visit by Iran’s Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni to Islamabad this week
— his second within the last 10 days, three Pakistani sources
said.Tankers rerouting, shipping insurance rises-The Houthi attacks
forced several other tankers to turn around and head north through the
Suez Canal, potentially using a much longer route to reach Asia by
sailing around Africa.Shipping insurance costs through the southern Red
Sea doubled for some companies on Thursday, sources said.Still, half of
the 18 ships exiting Bab el-Mandeb on Thursday were carrying crude oil,
including two Chinese supertankers. The number of tankers crossing
through the Strait of Hormuz fell to just one on Thursday, the lowest
since May 7.A Houthi spokesman said Friday that the Iran-backed terror
group was not blocking traffic through the Bab al-Mandeb Strait into the
Red Sea, adding that the group’s position was “limited to a maritime
blockade that only affects the Saudi side.”The US and UK were planning a
high-level conference that will bring together European and Middle
Eastern senior officials to discuss protecting shipping in the Strait of
Hormuz, according to Axios. The conference, to take place next week, has
not been scheduled. But it is meant to include defense ministers and
military chiefs from participating countries.US Defense Secretary Pete
Hegseth and military chief Dan Caine are slated to attend, according to
the report.US warns citizens in Mideast-The Iranian army said it had
attacked US military equipment depots at Al-Adiri, officially named Camp
Buehring, in northern Kuwait, and the positions of US troops at Camp
Arifjan and at Camp Doha, near Kuwait City.In the early evening, Kuwait
said its air defenses were intercepting “hostile” targets launched from
Iran.Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they had significantly damaged a
surveillance tower used by the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain. They also said
they had attacked a US barracks and fighter jets in Jordan, and a US
barracks and spy balloon as well as Patriot air defenses in Erbil in
Iraq’s Kurdish region, according to the semi-official Tasnim news
agency.Jordan’s army said it had downed seven Iranian missiles and six
drones, state TV reported, and that the attack had caused no material
damage or casualties.Several blasts sounded near Erbil airport, which
hosts US-led coalition troops, an AFP journalist said. Explosions were
heard after air defenses were activated, according to the journalist,
who also saw drones hovering over the city and smoke rising in the
airport area. The US embassy in Baghdad said US citizens in the Middle
East should exercise caution and remain on heightened alert.
PM
said planning to show Trump intel on Iran's rebuilding-As Trump pauses
Iran strikes, Israel said to believe he’ll soon be forced to
escalate-After first day of calm in some 2 weeks, Jerusalem sources tell
Hebrew media that diplomacy is sure to fail, leaving US president no
choice but to order major attack By ToI Staff, Nava Freiberg and
Agencies 25 July 2026, 11:34 pmUpdated: Today, 4:14 am
After the
United States refrained from striking Iran overnight Friday-Saturday for
the first day in two weeks, Hebrew media reported Saturday that
Jerusalem had been prepared for a major escalation in the war over the
weekend, which never came. Despite the pause, Israeli leaders still
estimate that US President Donald Trump would soon be compelled to step
up military action, the reports said. After the quiet night in Iran,
there were also no reports on Saturday of attacks by Iran on its Gulf
neighbors, which have been taking place daily as well.Trump personally
ordered the US military not to strike Iran on Friday and Saturday, Axios
reported, citing two sources with knowledge of the directive.Kan
reported that the Israeli military had prepared for a significant
escalation in the conflict. Channel 12’s diplomatic corespondent Yaron
Avraham reported the same, while Barak Ravid, who reports for both
Channel 12 and US outlet Axios, said that according to his information,
the strikes the US military had planned for Friday night, before Trump
nixed them, had been no different in scale than those it had carried out
over the previous 13 nights.Multiple outlets, including Axios and Kan,
cited sources as saying that the US was still intending a major
expansion of the fighting, but that Trump was now favoring allowing more
time for negotiations.Kan reported that the US military has continued
to send significant forces to Israel, including dozens of warplanes,
refueling planes, air defenses and munitions. It said some 90 refuelers
had arrived over the past few weeks and were stationed at Ben Gurion
Airport and the Ramon and Ovda airbases — a similar deployment to the
one that took place just before the US-Israeli war against Iran was
launched in late February.A senior Israeli official told Channel 12 that
“the chances of reaching an agreement between the United States and
Iran are virtually nonexistent,” calling an eventual escalation in the
conflict “inevitable.”Sources cited by Channel 13 and Ynet similarly
predicted that diplomacy would fail and that Trump, who prefers
negotiations, would eventually have “no choice” but to order a major
attack.Trump has threatened in recent days to widen the range of targets
to include Iran’s energy plants and bridges, send ground forces to
seize its central oil hub on Kharg Island, and bomb a deep-underground
nuclear site known as Pickaxe Mountain. On Friday, however, Trump said he
had not yet made a decision on new major strikes.“We are talking to
them,” he told reporters at the White House. “I think they’re being
serious. I think… they are being by far the most serious that we’ve seen
them, but that doesn’t mean we get there.”Concerns over depleted
interceptor stockpiles were the focus of discussions between Trump and
his top advisers before the administration decided to hold off on
escalating its campaign, according to The New York Times.Joint Chiefs of
Staff chairman Gen. Dan Caine privately said that while the military
was capable of launching major combat operations against Iran,
interceptors available to CENTCOM would be exhausted, anonymous
officials told the Times.Another senior US official told the outlet that
there were doubts in the administration that an intensified campaign
would pressure Iran into talks; rather, recent strikes have kept Iran
united and focused on a foreign threat.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
will meet Trump on Tuesday at the White House, the offices of both
leaders have said.Channel 12 reported Saturday that Netanyahu and his
team plan to present Trump with fresh intelligence on Iran’s efforts to
rebuild its military and nuclear program during their meeting, including
what Israeli officials believe are accelerated efforts under new
Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei to advance toward a nuclear weapon. The
report, citing Israeli sources, did not elaborate on the alleged moves
or the intelligence Israel intends to present, though recent reports
have detailed some. Previous private presentations by Netanyahu to Trump
on Iran’s nuclear activities and alleged violations of its commitments
reportedly played a significant role in the US decision to strike
Iran.Meanwhile, Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi rebels fired on Saudi oil
installations in two ports on the Red Sea coast on Saturday, in a sign
that the war that has disrupted energy supplies from the Gulf could be
spreading to a second major shipping route, and reigniting Yemen’s own
civil war.Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group had
successfully struck sites belonging to Saudi state oil giant Aramco in
Jizan and Yanbu. Video shared on social media and verified by Reuters
showed a large column of smoke rising from the direction of the Aramco
refinery in Jizan.Yemen’s Houthis say they hit a Saudi Aramco oil
facility in Jizan with missiles (and possibly drones) overnight,
sparking fires. Videos of smoke are circulating and satellite data
reportedly shows thermal hotspots at the site. Saudi Civil Defense
briefly issued danger… pic.twitter.com/OHN8G41EVw Advertisement — Clash
Report (@clashreport) July 25, 2026Two Asia-based trading sources said
that they had been informed of potential damage to fuel and oil storage
sites at Jizan. Aramco did not respond to requests for comment. In Yanbu,
two ballistic missiles aimed at oil installations were intercepted by a
US-made Patriot battery operated in Saudi Arabia by the Greek military
under an agreement with Riyadh, Greek security sources said.Yanbu is
Saudi Arabia’s main Red Sea oil port, where millions of barrels a day
are loaded, and has become the main route out for Saudi oil skirting the
Strait of Hormuz, which has been essentially closed off by Iran. Jizan,
on the Red Sea close to the Yemeni border, is the site of a refinery
with a capacity of 400,000 barrels per day.In Yemen, the air force of
the Saudi-backed, internationally recognized government, which has
opposed the Houthis for more than a decade, struck Houthi missile and
drone launch sites and arms depots in the Marib and al-Jawf provinces,
Yemeni officials said. The Saudi-led military alliance said it had bombed
Houthi military positions on Friday in the Red Sea port of Hodeida. The
Yemeni officials said both sides in Yemen’s civil war were mobilizing
forces along the front.Saudi Arabia led an Arab coalition against the
Houthis after the Iran-aligned fighters captured Yemen’s capital, Sanaa,
in 2014, though the alliance and the conflict had been largely dormant
in recent years. The Yemeni civil war, during which hundreds of thousands
of people died from fighting and famine, has been paused under a
ceasefire since 2022. But that truce broke down this month, with the
Houthis effectively joining the wider war their Iranian allies have
waged since being attacked by the US and Israel. The Houthis have
declared a naval blockade of Saudi Arabia over the past week, and Houthi
leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi said all Saudi oil facilities could be
targets. The move has contributed in recent days to one of the war’s
sharpest rises in global oil prices, with Brent crude spiking above $100
a barrel for the first time since May.
Greek Patriot battery
stationed in Saudi makes interceptions-US, Iran appear to halt strikes
after 13 days of mutual attacks-Violence continues amid flare-up between
Saudi Arabia and Iran-backed Houthis, with Saudis hitting a port and
Yemeni rebels firing missiles and drones at Saudi oil installations-By
Agencies and ToI Staff 25 July 2026, 2:16 pm
Iran reported no
strikes overnight into Saturday, an apparent break from nearly two
consecutive weeks of US nighttime attacks, but tensions remain high
following a recent escalation over control of the strategic Strait of
Hormuz and an exchange of fire reported between Saudi Arabia and the
Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.Iranian Health Ministry spokesperson
Hossein Kermanpour posted on X, saying that “Iran had a peaceful night,”
without any attacks reported. The US Central Command didn’t immediately
respond to a request for comment. However, unlike the previous 13
nights, it did not announce new strikes.Sirens sounded multiple times
early Saturday in Saudi Arabia’s Yanbu and Jizan provinces, which house
crucial oil facilities on the Red Sea, according to the Saudi Civil
Defense. It said the sirens were because of a “potential danger” that
was later lifted, without providing further details. Those sirens appear
to have been caused by missile fire from Yemen.Bahrain also sounded
missile alerts early Saturday, but no casualties have been reported.A
tenuous ceasefire that appeared to halt major operations in the conflict
that started with American and Israeli attacks on Iran seemed to
unravel in early July. Iran was accused of striking three ships in the
strait. The US responded by striking dozens of targets in Iran, which
retaliated by firing at Arab states in the region. The Strait of Hormuz, a
crucial passage for world energy supplies effectively shut down by
Iranian attacks, has been at the center of the conflict. The US military
fired Friday on a merchant vessel in the Gulf of Oman that was trying
to breach its renewed blockade of Iran’s ports, while Iran targeted
US-allied Gulf Arab countries. And on Saturday, Iran’s Revolutionary
Guards said their forces stopped four ships attempting to transit the
strategic Strait of Hormuz over the past 24 hours.“Four vessels that had
intended to transit through the southern area of the Strait of Hormuz
via an illegal and unsafe route were stopped over the past 24 hours
after warning shots were fired by the IRGC Navy,” the Guards said in a
statement quoted by state television, adding that the ships had “altered
course.”It was not immediately clear whether the halt in attacks
signalled a return to diplomacy or if it was just a pause before a
return to conflict.US President Donald Trump said Friday that he had not
decided whether to launch major strikes on Iran yet, as Tehran was now
getting “serious” in talks with Washington. His comments came after
reports that an increasingly frustrated Trump was meeting senior
advisors to discuss launching a large-scale military operation against
Iran.“No I haven’t,” Trump told journalists in the Oval Office when
asked if he had made a decision. “Look, we’re talking to them right now.
I think they’re getting more and more serious as the days go by, for
maybe the obvious reason.”Trump said Iran had a choice between making a
deal or facing a “much higher level” of strikes, after nearly two weeks
of US attacks and Iranian strikes across the region that have left a
ceasefire in tatters.“We’re locked and loaded and ready to go. But we’re
talking to them, so I think while we’re talking, we’ll see what comes
of it. I believe… they’re very serious. They should be,” Trump said.US
embassies in the Middle East also alerted Americans in the region on
Friday that options to leave could become more limited, as Iran’s
Revolutionary Guard advised residents of neighboring countries to stay
away from bases with US troops.Saudi-Houthi clashes flare-But while Iran
had a calm night, the conflict showed signs of intensifying in nearby
Yemen.Iran’s Houthi allies targeted two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea
this week, raising concerns the group may again try to block Red Sea
shipping routes. In response, Saudi Arabia struck the port city of
Hodeida in Yemen, the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen said early
Saturday.Meanwhile, air defense systems in Saudi Arabia intercepted two
ballistic missiles from Yemen on Saturday targeting oil refineries in
Yanbu on the Red Sea, Greek security sources told Reuters.Saudi civil
defense had issued several warnings for Yanbu and later said the danger
had passed. Civil defense also issued a warning for the port city of
Jizan about 1,000 km (620 miles) to the south, close to the Yemeni
border. There were no immediate official reports of damage; however,
footage from Jizan showed plumes of black smoke rising into the air from
the Aramco refinery in Jizan. The defense system was operated by Greek
military personnel, the sources said. Greece has deployed a US-made
Patriot air defense battery in Saudi Arabia since 2021 under an
agreement to help protect the kingdom’s energy infrastructure.Later on
Saturday, the Greek Patriot system also shot down a drone in the Yanbu
region that had been launched from Yemen, Greek security sources
said.Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Saturday denied any
Iranian involvement in the escalating Yemen conflict and called for
dialogue.“We believe that there is no military solution to the issue of
Yemen, Bab el-Mandab, and other regional issues,” said Araghchi in an
interview published on Saturday by the state-run Iran Daily newspaper,
calling for “dialogue.”He said the situation in Yemen “cannot be
attributed to Iran” and that the incidents occurring in the area of the
Bab el-Mandab Strait were “rooted in old disputes and issues between
Yemen, Saudi Arabia and the countries of the region.”Sources have said
that Iran has asked the Houthis to block Bab al-Mandab if the US targets
Iranian energy centers and have been sending IRGC officers and
equipment to Yemen.Renewed conflict between the Houthis in Yemen and
Saudi Arabia — which had largely been frozen since a UN-negotiated truce
in 2022 — flared up this month with the Tehran-backed rebels declaring a
blockade of Saudi ports and claiming attacks on tankers. The blockade
has threatened Saudi Arabia’s ability to get its supplies to the world
following Iran’s parallel blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, the
kingdom’s only other maritime route. On Friday, a Houthi spokesman said
the rebels were not blocking traffic through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait
and that the maritime blockade “only affects the Saudi side.”The war has
so far killed more than 3,400 people in Iran, according to the Iranian
Health Ministry. Eighteen US service members and 24 civilians in Israel
were killed, and smaller numbers of civilians were reported dead in
countries across the region. In Lebanon, more than 4,000 people have been
killed, according to figures that do not differentiate between
civilians and combatants, as well as 38 Israeli troops, after the
Iran-backed Hezbollah terror group fired at Israel in support of the
Islamic Republic.Israel says it has killed more than 2,500 Hezbollah
operatives.
Iran said constantly honing ballistic missiles to
better avoid air defenses-According to The Wall Street Journal, the
Kheibar missile, which can reach Israel, is being continuously adapted,
employing complex maneuvers to get past interceptors-By ToI Staff 25
July 2026, 7:47 pm
Iran is increasingly relying on its Kheibar
Shekan ballistic missile in its regional attacks, all the while adapting
and enhancing its capabilities to better evade air defenses, The Wall
Street Journal reported Saturday. The Kheibar Shekan, or Kheibar-buster,
is named after a Jewish castle overrun by Muslim warriors in the early
days of Islam. It has a range of 1,450 kilometers (900 miles), making it
fully capable of reaching Gulf nations and Israel. Its ability to be
quickly deployed and launched has helped the Iranians avoid air strikes
during the war by the Israeli and US air forces as they hunted for and
eliminated launch sites. The report said Iranian forces have been using
the missile in recent attacks on US assets in the region in recent
weeks, as fighting restarted, often varying its trajectory, speed, and
maneuvering to complicate interception efforts. Some models of the
missile are able to perform last-minute maneuvers in the final stage of
flight, helping them avoid interceptors.A US official speaking to the
paper said most Kheibar Shekan missiles launched at the region have been
successfully shot down, but some have been able to punch through
defenses using such advanced methods, indicating the Iranians are
studying interceptions and learning how to better circumvent
them.Missile expert Fabian Hinz told The Journal that Tehran “has seen
what types of maneuvers are the most effective ones for overcoming
missile defense. Every single combat use gives you some sort of data, so
that’s very useful for the Iranians.”Despite intense Israeli and
American efforts to destroy Iran’s ballistic missile capabilities during
this year’s war, Iran is believed to retain significant capabilities. In
April, shortly before a temporary ceasefire was announced in the
fighting, Channel 12 news reported that the Israeli military believes
Iran still had more than 1,000 ballistic missiles that could reach
Israel, citing an Israeli Air Force intelligence officer. In late May,
the network reported that Iran had resumed production of ballistic
missiles, launchers and other critical weapons systems far faster than
initially expected, citing updated US intelligence assessments and a
senior Israeli official.According to that report, Tehran restarted
manufacturing using surviving components, improvised underground
facilities, and partially restored production lines, with assistance
from Russia and China. The report said Israeli defense officials assessed
Iran could significantly ramp up ballistic missile production within
about a year, or possibly sooner. Channel 12 reported that updated
intelligence assessments also indicated that roughly two-thirds of
Iran’s missile launchers remained operational, contradicting earlier
wartime estimates that about half had been destroyed.During most of the
war, Iran would fire some 10-15 missiles at Israel a day. Though this
allowed Israel’s air defenses to intercept most of the missiles,
limiting damage and casualties, it also preserved Iran’s capabilities
for the long term while keeping Israelis repeatedly running to shelters
every day for weeks, exhausting the home front. The April ceasefire put a
stop to the Iranian barrages, but Tehran has increasingly targeted Gulf
nations in recent weeks as the conflict has erupted once more, and
Israel is increasingly braced for the possibility it will be drawn into
the fighting.AP and Stav Levaton contributed to this report.

'Any
Jews wanna go to the chambers?' - 6th grade group text-‘Planning lives
elsewhere’: These Jews are leaving NY due to antisemitism,
politics-While the vast majority of Jewish New Yorkers are remaining,
some are relocating to Israel or nearby states, citing Mayor Zohran
Mamdani, schools and discrimination-By Agatha Khishchenko Today, 4:18 pm
NEW
YORK — Ron Dov, an American-Israeli, watched his progressive LGBTQ+
community in New York City embrace anti-Israel politics following the
October 7, 2023, Hamas invasion of Israel and ensuing war in Gaza.A chat
group he had been in for years, focused on event tickets for the gay
community, became a forum for anti-Zionism and accusations of genocide
in Gaza. Any view that did not align with that consensus was immediately
dismissed, Dov said, adding that the group had never before discussed
politics.Anti-Zionist activism came to the fore in community events such
as NYC Pride and the Dyke March, and in queer art spaces and LGBTQ+
college clubs.Prior to October 7, Dov said he had not experienced any
similar issues in the LGBTQ+ community.“I was like, ‘What the hell am I
doing here?’” said Dov, a 39-year-old with dual American-Israeli
citizenship. “The LGBTQ community is probably the most anti-Israel and
anti-Zionist community, and they’re the community that’s supposed to be
the most welcoming, most understanding, and it’s become the exact
opposite.”Dov began preparing a move to Israel due to the antisemitism
and hatred toward Israel he witnessed in the LGBTQ+ community. New York
City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s rise last year sealed the deal for his
decision to leave, Dov said. He made aliyah, or immigrated to Israel, in
December 2025, weeks after Mamdani won the general election.Mamdani’s
win spurred discourse among Jewish New Yorkers about leaving the city,
some of whom have followed through, decamping to Israel or nearby US
states. Those who left pointed to multiple factors, including
antisemitism on the streets and in schools, anti-Israel protests and the
political climate.New York City primary election wins last month by
Mamdani-backed anti-Israel candidates have solidified the decision for
those who moved or are in the process of relocating.Asked this month if
he had any regrets about leaving, Dov said, “Zero. Oh my God, 0.000%.”‘I
was done’Dov is not the only Jewish New Yorker who has left due to
politics and antisemitism.Robin Reiter, a single parent to a teenage
son, moved from Manhattan’s Upper East Side to Jersey City, New Jersey,
on June 26, three days after the primary elections. She cited
antisemitism, concerns with the city’s public schools and politics as
motivating her decision to leave.“I was very sure as soon as [Mamdani]
got elected that I was done,” Reiter said.Mamdani, who identifies as an
anti-Zionist, has made anti-Israel activism central to his politics. His
ascendancy marked a sea change in New York City, where support for
Israel in City Hall had been a given for generations. The recent
Democratic Party primary wins by a trio of Israel critics indicated his
victory was not a one-off.The political transformation came after
“thousands” of anti-Israel protests on city streets, antisemitic
incidents in city schools and a spike in anti-Jewish hate crimes in the
city, where Jews are targeted far more than any other group. Protests in
the city regularly feature open support for Hamas and other terrorist
groups, and calls to purge “Zionists.”Mamdani, who often condemns
antisemitism, has Jewish allies and supporters, and has pledged to
combat anti-Jewish discrimination in the city, including by increasing
funding for hate crimes prevention.Critics argue that his anti-Zionist
politics contribute to a hostile atmosphere against mainstream Jews and
he has repeatedly clashed with prominent Jewish leaders.Reiter added
that she could no longer justify paying taxes to an educational system
and a mayor who she felt was opposed to the Jewish community. She said
the results of the primary election the week she moved were another sign
that she made the right choice.“No part of me has regretted this,”
Reiter said.Protests, politics and a pull from Israel-Dov said that
seeing hundreds of anti-Israel protesters streaming down his West
Village street, coupled with anti-Zionism in the LGBTQ+ community and
the changing political dynamics in New York, spurred his decision to
leave. There was also the draw of life in Israel. Dov said he was not
running away from New York, but toward a life in the Jewish state.
Making aliyah was something he had always dreamed about, and he sees
upside to a long-term future in Israel, he said. While there does not
appear to be any updated data about Jews immigrating from New York to
Israel or elsewhere, it seems clear that there is no mass exodus from
the city. The vast majority of Jewish New Yorkers are staying in
place. There is evidence of an uptick in Jews who are considering a move,
though. According to Nefesh B’Nefesh, an organization that facilitates
immigration to Israel, applications to make aliyah from New York have
increased since October 7, alongside a broader spike in North America.
From the November 2025 mayoral election to July 2026, Nefesh B’Nefesh
received 1,936 aliyah applications, a 31% increase over the 1,476
applications for the same period the previous year.Like Dov, Arielle
Sabol had long considered moving to Israel. Sabol, 35, moved to New York
in her early twenties. She grew up in a Massachusetts community with
few Jews, and one of the reasons she relocated to New York was because
the city felt so Jewish, she said.Sabol, a mother of two young
daughters, said she no longer felt at ease in New York, citing protests
that flooded her Brooklyn community, hearing “genocide” accusations from
hecklers while picking up Shabbat candles from Chabad emissaries, and
the politics becoming more anti-Israel.She said that, while speaking
Hebrew on the playground with her daughters, “People would scoff at me
and walk away,” and that she no longer felt comfortable sending her
4-year-old to a non-Jewish school.Sabol and her husband, Alex, started
contemplating a move to Israel in June 2025. In early 2026, after
Mamdani was elected, they decided to start the aliyah process. Sabol and
her family, including her mother, will move to Israel later this
month.“I definitely think the mayoral election and the rhetoric around
it, there’s like this overwhelming community that’s just against you,”
Sabol said. “The [primary] election that just happened, that is more
evidence we made the right decision.”‘No doubts in my mind’The
immigrants from New York are part of wider trends in the Diaspora and
Israel. The Immigration and Absorption Ministry reported a 25% jump in
immigrants last year from the United States, France, Britain and
Canada. At the same time, thousands of Israelis have immigrated abroad
amid the war and domestic political turmoil. Israel recorded a negative
migration balance in 2024 and 2025.Jewish immigration is not only to or
from Israel, either. Some Canadian Jews are weighing a relocation to the
US, for example.A 2024 Pew Research Study found that Jews are far more
likely to immigrate than other religious groups.Experts have said that
Jews, like other migrants, are influenced by a range of factors in
addition to antisemitism, such as socioeconomic conditions and
education.Abby Brody, an education expert and author who left New York
City before Mamdani’s election, said concerns about schools and
antisemitism had pushed her to move from Manhattan’s Greenwich Village
after 24 years.Brody had never considered relocating until a New York
University protest encampment appeared in her neighborhood. Brody said
she had tried engaging with the protestors, but was labeled a “Zionist
agitator,” physically surrounded and pushed out of the encampment. She
could hear protesters chanting outside her first-floor apartment, where
she lived with her husband and two sons.At the same time, her
sixth-grade son received group texts from classmates with images of
Adolf Hitler and a statement that said, “Any Jews here wanna go to the
chambers.”Brody said her school’s lack of a response, coupled with the
protests and the overall climate in the city, spurred her decision to
leave New York. She moved to Westport, Connecticut, in May 2024. She
said her two sons are enrolled in public school and her family has not
experienced any antisemitism in their new home.“My kids have created the
most incredible friendships. They’re really proudly Jewish and have no
fear to wear their Stars of David,” Brody said. “That, to me, is the
most important thing right now.”She has set up a group, called Found a
Tribe, to connect Jews and allies who lost friendships due to
antisemitism. While she left before Mamdani became mayor, she felt his
victory vindicated her move.“I felt very much a sense of betrayal when
Mamdani won,” Brody said. “What Jews have brought to New York City, the
arts, all the things, to have this man elected, I felt was an ultimate
betrayal.”Some Jewish New Yorkers plan to leave the city, but are
earlier in the relocation process.Martha Tabachnikova, 40, a Brooklyn
lawyer, said she and her husband were working on a long-term plan to
relocate.Born in Odesa, Ukraine, Tabachnikova moved to the United States
as a Soviet Jewish refugee when she was three years old. She has been
living in her childhood home in Mill Basin, Brooklyn, for nearly thirty
years and has two boys, ages nine and 12.After the anti-Israel
candidates swept their primaries last month, Tabachnikova said she and
her husband began discussing a move, although they do not yet have
definitive plans.“I have no doubts in my mind that my children should be
planning their lives elsewhere,” Tabachnikova said.
IDF admits
illegal outposts have become big security burden-Settlers rampage across
West Bank amid burial of civil security officer shot by
Palestinian-Father of Israeli killed in settler raid calls on gov’t to
build settlements in Gaza and Lebanon, as settlers ransack over a dozen
villages, set fire to buildings and farmland-By ToI Staff and Emanuel
Fabian-24 July 2026, 11:19 pm
Young settler extremists rioted in
Palestinian towns across the West Bank on Friday afternoon, as a funeral
was held for an Israeli civil security squad member who was shot dead
by a Palestinian who managed to snatch his gun while fending off a
settler raid of his village.Settler rampages were reported in over a
dozen villages across the northern West Bank, where several hundred
Israelis hurled stones, torched homes and reportedly wounded over a
dozen Palestinians.Weekends regularly see an uptick in settler violence,
as hundreds of national religious yeshiva students often join friends
living in illegal outposts throughout the West Bank, from which they
descend to carry out attacks on Palestinians in larger numbers than
during the week. But this weekend is poised to be particularly violent
after the Friday morning gunfight in the northern West Bank village of
Tell. A group of settlers — some well underage and accompanied by armed
adults — raided the town, claiming they were on a hike, though the army
later said that the visit into Areas A and B where Israelis are barred
had not been coordinated.Palestinians sought to repel the raiding
settlers and a clash broke out, with one of the Palestinians managing to
snatch the weapon of Benayahu Mellet, a 32-year-old member of the
neighboring Havat Gilad settlement’s civil security squad that had been
dispatched to the scene along with artillery soldiers stationed nearby,
the IDF said.A gunfight ensued, with the Palestinian fatally shooting
Mellet along with Maj. Yuval Ezra, an IDF officer who had also been
dispatched to the scene.A platoon commander who arrived with Ezra to the
scene managed to shoot dead the attacker, and three other Palestinians
were also killed in the gunfight. In addition, two Israelis — one
critically and one seriously — and four Palestinians were wounded, three
of whom critically. The punishment: More settlements-Mellet was laid to
rest in Havat Gilad later Friday afternoon. A reserves commander in the
Jerusalem Brigade’s 8119th Battalion, the master sergeant received a
military burial because he was recognized as a fallen soldier. Ezra will
be buried on Sunday.Coalition lawmakers and government ministers were
present at the Friday funeral, including Yitzhak Wasserlauf, Orit
Strock, Ze’ev Elkin, Limor Son Har Melech and Amit Helvi.Mellet’s widow,
Esther, said they were together for 14 years before it all “ended in a
moment.”“You always leapt at being the first one to go anywhere,” she
said in her eulogy. “This time as well, there was no question. It was
clear to me that you were there.”“I wasn’t worried when I saw the
helicopters [responding to the clash], because you always came back.
Just this time you didn’t come back at all,” she lamented.Mellet’s
father, Boaz, called in his eulogy for Israel, in the final days of the
current right-wing government’s term, to dismantle the Palestinian
Authority, expand settlements in the West Bank in addition to
establishing settlements in Gaza and southern Lebanon. He added,
“Benayahu worked, toiled, for the settlement of the land… I call to
follow the path of Benayahu and our loved ones.”Attendees at the funeral
repeatedly chanted “revenge!”‘Revenge’That sentiment was acted upon
before, during and after the funeral took place. In the nearby village of
Far’ata, settlers attacked residents and torched several buildings,
according to Palestinian media reports and footage from the scene.Seven
Palestinians were wounded during the raid, mainly by gunfire, the
Palestinian Red Crescent emergency service said. The IDF did not respond
to requests for comment about whether its troops had taken part in the
raid or if the gunfire came from settlers, who are often armed by
Israeli authorities.Israeli settler terrorists attacked the Palestinian
village of Urif in the West Bank, setting homes and vehicles on fire and
attempting to burn a family alive inside their home.

2026-Masked settlers were also filmed raiding the northern West Bank
village of Sarra, where three residents were wounded and six homes were
torched. Settlers also set fire to five vehicles and several acres of
farmland amid clashes with Palestinians who tried to confront them, the
Palestinian Authority’s official Wafa news site reported. In the Jordan
Valley area of Mu’arrajat — a hamlet abandoned by Bedouin last year
after repeated settler attacks — a Palestinian driver was stopped by
settlers and stabbed in the back, according to Arabic media reports.A

extinguish the flames before it was too late. pic.twitter.com/ubB6kYV6Di
— Ihab Hassan (@IhabHassane) July 24, 2026-In the East Jerusalem
Palestinian neighborhood of a-Tur, Israeli religious extremists were
filmed blocking Palestinian cars from passing.Olive trees belonging to
Palestinians from the village of Tell, where the earlier raid had taken
place, were also found uprooted later Friday. In the Nablus area village
of Awarta, settlers beat a 30-year-old Palestinian local, who was taken
to a hospital for treatment, Wafa said.IDF admits its stretched thin due
to mushrooming outposts-The IDF said Friday it was working to prevent
Israeli reprisal attacks, but its actions appeared to focus largely on
cracking down on Palestinian villages with residents allegedly involved
in the Tell shooting.Israeli commandos raided the Nablus Specialized
Hospital where they apprehended two Palestinians allegedly involved in
the Tell clash. The pair had reportedly been receiving treatment for
wounds sustained in the gunfight.IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir
visited the site of the shooting in Tell where he vowed that the
military will hunt down “all the terrorists involved in the terror
attack.”But during a briefing with reporters, a military official
acknowledged that illegal Israeli outposts throughout the West Bank have
become one of the IDF’s “biggest challenges.”The military official said
that the more than 80 outposts in the territory are creating challenges
for the military’s ability to maintain control and order in the West
Bank.“The issue of the outposts today, especially the violent ones, is
one of the most challenging issues there is,” the official said on
condition of anonymity.Settler violence has surged in the West Bank in
recent months, with near-daily attacks, though arrests and indictments
for the violence are rare. Critics have accused the government of
condoning the attacks and doing too little to stop them.Alongside the
outposts, there are also 126 settlement farms, which are also illegal
under Israeli law, but have been established with near-full support from
the government. The officer said the farming outposts are also creating a
“huge challenge” for the army’s efforts to protect them.As a result,
two weeks ago, the IDF deployed two more battalions permanently to the
West Bank, bringing the total number there to 24.
UK PM Burnham’s
new solicitor general met with Hamas in 2010-Andy Slaughter, who will
have wide power over decisions related to terrorist organizations, is
accused of harboring ‘sympathy for Hamas’By Zev Stub-Today, 2:57 pm
One
of the first appointments by new UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham is
already under fire after resurfaced pictures showed him in a meeting
with Hamas members in Jerusalem in 2010.Andy Slaughter, who was
appointed solicitor general soon after Burnham took office as the
country’s seventh prime minister in a decade on Monday, joined
then-Labour MP Jeremy Corbyn on a fact-finding trip to Israel and the
Palestinian territories in November 2010, sponsored by Friends of
Al-Aqsa and the pro-Palestinian nonprofit Middle East Monitor.Pictures
of the meeting, originally posted and since deleted by the Monitor, were
published late Saturday by The Telegraph newspaper, which quoted the
Monitor report as noting that the delegation met with Palestinian
representatives of both Hamas and the rival Palestinian Authority’s
Fatah party. In his new position, Slaughter would wield significant power
over decisions related to the prosecution of proscribed terrorist
organizations, including Hamas, the Telegraph noted. The UK solicitor
general serves as deputy attorney general, provides legal advice to the
government, and helps oversee major legal and prosecution
departments. His appointment to that post was “an absolute disgrace,”
shadow justice secretary Nick Timothy told The Telegraph, accusing
Slaughter of showing “sympathy for Hamas.”The photograph from the visit
shows Slaughter and Corbyn alongside Mohammed Totah, Ahmed Attoun and
Khaled Abu-Arafeh, all of whom held positions associated with
Hamas.Attoun was arrested by Israeli authorities and deported from
Jerusalem to the West Bank in 2011. Totah and Abu-Arafeh were later
arrested after spending 18 months inside an International Committee of
the Red Cross compound in East Jerusalem to avoid detention and
deportation by Israeli authorities for their involvement with the terror
group.Slaughter was a Labour MP at the time of the visit. The MEMO
description of the visit details the many accounts of “crimes” of the
“Israeli occupation” including home demolitions, “ethnic cleansing,” and
“apartheid” that the MPs heard at every stop they made. They also
learned about the importance of the BDS boycott against Israel and were
urged to support it.From the detailed 47-page MEMO report of the visit,
it appears that the delegation did not meet with any Jewish Israelis
during the four days. The report also noted that Slaughter traveled to
Gaza in March 2010 on a separate trip with the Britain-Palestine
All-Party Parliamentary Group. During that visit, he said he met Faraj
al-Ghoul, then Hamas’s justice minister, and Ahmed Yousef, Hamas’ deputy
foreign minister and a senior adviser to Hamas political leader Ismail
Haniyeh.Shortly after that visit, he wrote an article in The Guardian
arguing that negotiations with Hamas should take place “without
preconditions.”According to The Telegraph, Slaughter was also one of
four MPs who voted against the Labour Party adopting the International
Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism in 2018.
Now, he will be one of just two UK officers with a say in prosecutions
related to Hamas, the report said.“Andy Slaughter should have no place
in government,” Timothy said following Slaughter’s appointment to the
position. “It beggars belief that Labour have handed him the final say
on proscription decisions and command of the government legal
department.”In a statement to The Telegraph, the Attorney General’s
Office rejected criticism of Slaughter’s appointment, saying that
Slaughter has consistently condemned Hamas, supports a two-state
solution, and will carry out his duties with political impartiality and
adherence to the rule of law.Slaughter did not respond to a request by
The Telegraph for comment.Britain declared the military wing of Hamas,
the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, a terrorist organization in 2001. in
November 2021, it expanded its proscription to the entire
organization.Under UK law, membership in or support for Hamas is a
criminal offense carrying penalties of up to 14 years in prison.Earlier
this month, Burnham caused alarm among Jewish organizations when he said
Britain must do more to pressure Israel over its treatment of
Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, and that it must bar the sale of weapons
that Israel will use in the West Bank and Gaza.“It’s completely
unacceptable that innocent Palestinians, including children, continue to
be killed,” he said. “That there’s still a humanitarian crisis with too
little aid getting in, and that the Israeli military continues to
expand the area it controls in Gaza. We’ve got to do more to put
pressure on the Israeli government.”Burnham succeeded Keir Starmer, who
had boasted that one of his main achievements was ridding Labor of the
antisemitism that had infested the party under previous leader Corbyn,
who was seen in the same photo with Slaughter.Corbyn also faced
criticism for calling terror groups Hamas and Hezbollah “friends” when
inviting members for a parliamentary meeting in 2009. He later
downplayed the comment and said he regretted using the term.He was also
pictured standing next to Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine
chief Maher al-Taher, at a commemoration ceremony for the Black
September terrorists who took part in the 1972 massacre of 11 Israelis
at the Munich Olympics.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

slammed into people gathered for Berlin's Pride celebrations on Saturday
night, killing one person and injuring at least 16 others. Berlin
police said they have identified a suspect who has ties to Islamic
extremists in the German capital and are searching for him.A van slammed
into people gathered for Berlin's famed 2SLGBTQ+ event on Saturday
night, killing one person, injuring at least 16 others and prompting
police to call off the celebrations and a concert hours after they had
begun.Berlin police said they have identified a suspect who has not been
arrested and has ties to Islamic extremists in the German capital."The
suspect is known to police. He is known to us as a member of Islamic
circles here in Berlin, and our search for this person is proceeding at
full speed," police spokesperson Florian Nath said. He did not identify
the suspect by name.Earlier, police said some of the victims had
life-threatening injuries. Firefighters and ambulances were out with
many emergency staffers at the scene to attend to the victims."We are
conducting an intensive search for possible suspects," Nath said in a
short video released earlier on the Berlin police account on X.'Attack
on our free and cosmopolitan society'According to police, a white van
had driven into Tiergarten park, which was just off the route that the
Pride march had passed along earlier, and hit several people before
colliding with a tree. Police could not say how many officers had been
deployed to the scene but that it was "definitely a lot of
police."Overall, more than 2,200 police officers have been on duty in
Berlin since Saturday morning to protect the Pride parade and other
related events in the city.Police were conducting witness interrogations
at the park during the night and investigating accounts that in
addition to the crash, some victims appeared to have suffered stab
wounds — but that it was too early to draw any conclusion from those
accounts.Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner expressed shock, saying that "following
a peaceful and vibrant Pride parade, the rally for a tolerant and
peaceful Berlin was attacked in the most brutal manner.""This is an
attack on our free and cosmopolitan society," Wegner said, adding that
his thoughts were with the victims, their families and friends."I have
confidence in the police and security authorities, who will be working
around the clock to investigate."Meanwhile, authorities called on
possible witnesses to come forward and share with police any video or
photos they might have taken at the scene of the attack. The city also
activated a crisis hotline for people missing friends or family
members.'Dark day for the community'Hundreds of thousands of people had
come to Berlin on Saturday to celebrate at the city's Pride parade,
known in Germany as Christopher Street Day. It's one of Europe's largest
2SLGBTQ+ celebrations. The Pride event in front of the iconic
Brandenburg Gate in downtown Berlin was called off at about 10:15 p.m.
local time, and a band's performance on stage was interrupted. People
were urged to go home and avoid taking the route through Tiergarten
park. Before the incident, people had celebrated peacefully, marching
through the city for hours, dancing to loud music, and cheering the
roughly 80 floats that participated in the parade.Julian Miethig, who
had attended events at the Brandenburg Gate earlier, said he had just
wanted to go to an afterparty when he heard from a friend that
"something bad happened there, and there are a lot of fire trucks, a lot
of emergency vehicles, ambulances."He said he went to Tiergarten and
was shocked that something like this could have happened at Berlin's
Pride celebrations."It's a dark day for the community," Miethig said.
Zelenskyy warns of 'massive' Russian attack within 48 hours-The Associated Press.By Nathan Rennolds-Published on 25/07/2026
On
Friday, Ukrainian authorities said Russian missile strikes on the Kyiv
region killed at least 10 people and injured around 100 more.Ukrainian
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned of a "massive" new Russian
attack on Ukraine. In a post on X, the Ukrainian leader said intelligence
suggested Moscow had "readied missiles" for an attack "within the next
48 hours.""Please take care of yourselves and pay attention to air raid
alerts," he wrote. It comes after Ukrainian authorities said Russian
missile strikes on the Kyiv region on Friday killed at least 10 people
and injured around 100 more. The strikes reportedly hit an arms
exhibition where representatives of the Ukrainian defence industry were
present.A further five people were killed following guided aerial bomb
strikes in Slovyansk, per Zelenskyy.Latvia's foreign minister confirmed
that the Latvian consulate in Slovyansk was damaged in the
attacks.Responding to the news in a statement posted to social media,
Kaja Kallas, the European Union's top diplomat, said the strike on the
consulate "underscores Moscow’s utter disregard for international
law.""Latvia has our full support," she added.Ukrainian strikes on
Russia-On Saturday, Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukrainian forces had
carried out strikes on a weapons facility in Kirov on Friday
night.Ukraine also targeted an oil refinery in Tyumen, a logistics
facility in Yekaterinburg, and a fuel and lubricants depot in
Rostov‑on‑Don, he said."We also achieved very strong results with
long‑range strikes in the Caspian Sea – including vessels used in
military cargo shipments involving Iran, as well as a warship," he
added, while also sharing video footage appearing to show the aftermath
of some of the strikes. In Ukraine, one person died and nine were injured
following a Russian attack on the southeastern region of Zaporizhzhia
on Saturday, per local authorities.Zelenskyy to meet with
Trump-Zelenskyy is due to meet with US President Donald Trump in
Washington next week as the US and Ukraine continue to discuss peace
proposals to end the war, which began following Russia's full-scale
invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.Zelenskyy said on Wednesday that he
had spoken with US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner,
Trump's son-in-law, about efforts to end the conflict."A good and
important conversation about how to energize diplomacy and bring peace
closer," he said.Earlier this week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey
Lavrov sat down with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines
of the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) foreign ministers'
summit in the Philippines.According to the Kremlin, Lavrov used the
meeting to warn Washington against continuing arms sales to Kyiv."Lavrov
briefed his American counterpart on the actual situation along the
front line and emphasised that it would be unacceptable to further arm
the Kyiv regime," a statement from the Russian foreign ministry
read.Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Rubio said the pair had a
"good," "frank" conversation but declined to go into more detail.Asked
specifically about the Kremlin's statement, Rubio said: "We sell arms
via PURL, which is an initiative we have through NATO and that's what
we're involved in. There's been no change to our policy in that
regard"."We want a peace deal. We want the war to end," he added.

Canada
remains anti-nuke, but its potential path to the bomb is getting
shorter-This country has all the elements needed for a clandestine
nuclear weapons program — if it so desired-Evan Dyer · CBC News ·
Posted: Jul 26, 2026 4:00 AM EDT |
For decades, Canada’s
official policy on nuclear weapons has been that they shouldn’t exist,
and there is no sign that principle is about to be abandoned. But for
reasons of history and geography, Canada is also one of the world's
non-nuclear countries with the easiest technical path to a nuclear
weapon. And because of the particular design of its CANDU reactors, it
would also be one of the countries best-positioned to produce
weapons-grade fissile material without tripping international alerts —
although such a move would carry huge geopolitical risks.Technological
changes that are expected in the coming years will likely make Canada
even more of a threshold nuclear arms power than it is today, whether it
chooses to cross that threshold or not."The only thing that inhibits
Canada is the will to do it, the political decision to do it," said
nuclear weapons expert Steve Fetter of the University of Maryland, who
served as head of national security and international affairs in the
White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. He's also a member
of the National Academy of Sciences Committee on International Security
and Arms Control, and the originator of the "Fetter Model," the standard
technique used in arms control verification for detecting the presence
of nuclear warheads through radiography."Canada was a major participant
in the Manhattan Project, as was the U.K.," Fetter told CBC News.
"Immediately after the [Second World War], we froze you out and said,
'No co-operation.' So Canada decided — as did the U.K. — to develop its
own completely indigenous program."The heavy water route-The U.K., of
course, went on to become a nuclear arms power, while Canada did
not.Canada designed the CANDU heavy water reactors that use unenriched,
natural uranium containing only about 0.7 per cent of the U-235 isotope
needed to make nuclear weapons. Most of the world’s 440-odd nuclear
reactors are light water units that require uranium enriched to about
four per cent U-235 content. For this reason, and despite being the
world’s second-biggest producer of uranium, Canada has never enriched
domestically. However, the CANDU is anything but a proliferation-proof
technology, because it is not only the best kind of reactor for
producing the plutonium-239 isotope used in bombs, but also for
concealing its production."You do produce plutonium in a light water
reactor," said Fetter. "But that plutonium is contained in highly
radioactive spent fuel and it's not really high-quality."Light water
reactors work by loading enriched uranium, sealing the reactor core and
then running it for 18-24 months before shutting down, reopening the
core and replacing fuel. This makes it relatively easy to keep track of
how much fuel is going in, and what is happening to the spent fuel that
comes out. It’s impossible to secretly swap fuel rods while the reactor
is generating power. The Canadian heavy water reactor doesn’t work that
way.Three people and a clock.Harder to monitor-"All uranium-fuelled
reactors produce plutonium. The issue with the CANDU is that it has
online refuelling," explained Ed Lyman, director of nuclear safety for
the Union of Concerned Scientists in Washington, D.C. "You're refuelling
continuously, which makes it harder for the IAEA [International Atomic
Energy Agency]."Canada, which produces all of its own uranium, would be
in a strong position to divert fissionable material undetected if so
inclined, say the experts. The plutonium produced in a heavy water
reactor is also much easier to turn into a nuclear weapon, said
Fetter."Of the countries that have made nuclear weapons with plutonium,
many of them have used a heavy water reactor," he said. That’s why India
used a Canadian heavy water reactor to produce its first nuclear weapon
in 1974, an all-plutonium implosion-type bomb. The "Smiling Buddha" test
was the first to break the nuclear monopoly of the "Big Five" UN
Security Council powers.Fetter said the U.S. had heavy water reactors
only for the purpose of producing plutonium and tritium. (Tritium, also
produced in abundance by the CANDU reactor, is another critical
component of a modern two-stage thermonuclear weapon that Canada has in
abundance.)-Using riskier fuels-Canada is also branching out into a new
kind of technology that will require enriched uranium: the small modular
reactor (SMR). Some of the proposed SMRs would use uranium enriched to a
level as high as 20 per cent, known as high-assay low-enriched uranium
(HALEU).HALEU is already a proliferation concern in itself, said
Lyman."Anything below 20 per cent is considered low-enriched uranium and
has a much lower level of oversight. The IAEA considers it indirect-use
material you can't directly use in a bomb,” he explained. "But there's
evidence, both historical and technical, that that's not true, and that
the actual cutoff for weapon-usable uranium is below 20 per cent. Could
be 15 per cent, could be 10 per cent."And so I worry about this push for
advanced reactors, SMRs that use HALEU up near 20 per cent, like the
ARC 100 in Canada, that the material itself is in the dangerous band.
And if Canada were to pursue a whole fleet of SMRs using HALEU, and
especially if they were to build their own enrichment plants to support
that, that might give them a threshold capability for bombs, even if
they never make highly enriched [over 20 per cent] uranium."ARC Canada
points out that its proposed reactor in New Brunswick, which would
become the only commercial fast-breeder reactor in the world outside
Russia, mitigates against proliferation risks by having a long fuel
cycle with a core that stays sealed for 20 years. But there’s another
factor: The arrival of SMRs that consume enriched uranium has got the
government of Canada thinking about enrichment. Two people walk along a
tunnel in a mine.To enrich or not to enrich"Any country which has a
complete fuel cycle is a latent nuclear weapons country, in the sense
that it is not far from making a nuclear weapon," said former IAEA
director and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mohamed ElBaradei.Scientists
consulted by CBC News said Canada would probably have little economic
motive to build its own enrichment facilities. Canada’s nuclear energy
strategy foresees importation of enriched uranium from France and the
U.S. in the immediate future, even though that often means buying back
Canadian-mined uranium after other countries have added value. The
longer-term question of whether Canada should develop domestic
enrichment capability remains under assessment.- Canada's nuclear energy
strategy-But the strategy also notes that "geopolitical volatility has
exposed fragility in nuclear fuel supply chains at every stage — mining,
milling, refining, conversion, enrichment, and fabrication."Canada
plans to double its exports of uranium in raw form, "but there is also a
compelling case for expanding downstream capabilities
selectively."Domestic enrichment might not save Canada money, but would
increase its strategic autonomy."Canada will continue to monitor the
energy security implications of these supply chains," says the strategy.
"The longer-term question of whether Canada should develop domestic
enrichment capability remains under assessment."Enrichment could get
easier-A handful of non-nuclear arms powers have developed enrichment
facilities. They include Brazil, Japan, Argentina, Germany and the
Netherlands, but only Brazil combines a modern centrifuge facility with a
large domestic supply of uranium.Japan could theoretically produce
weapons-grade uranium, but its nuclear technology, like South Korea’s,
is largely American, its nuclear program is subject to strict
inspections, and it has no uranium mines of its own — in fact it buys
much of its supply from Canada.A Canadian company, Cameco, is currently
exploring the next frontier of uranium enrichment. The SILEX method uses
laser excitation to separate U-235 more quickly and efficiently than
spinning it in a centrifuge.Already, a centrifuge facility can fit in an
area the size of a high school gym. SILEX, said Fetter, "potentially
could be even smaller and use less energy than centrifuge enrichment,
which would make it harder to detect a clandestine facility."The SILEX
project has already received U.S. government funding and acquired land
in western Kentucky for a plant expected to be operating by
2030.Crossing the threshold-For all the Carney government’s talk of "a
more dangerous and divided world," there is still no public signal that
Canada might abandon its long-held opposition to nuclear arms.If the
strategic situation were to change, Canada would have to decide whether
to go the open route and formally depart the Treaty on the
Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), or pursue nuclear arms
through a clandestine program as other countries have done with a mixed
record of success.Plasma physicist Tara Drozdenko worked on nuclear
weapons issues under the administrations of Barack Obama and George W.
Bush. She represented the United States on NATO's Senior Group on
Proliferation, and headed the Country/Regime Sanctions Unit at the U.S.
Department of Treasury, where she managed the government's
nuclear-related sanctions on countries such as Iran and North Korea.
Today, she’s not sure Washington remains committed to preventing
proliferation, or how it would react to a Canadian decision to leave the
NPT."In a normal administration, there would be condemnation, there
would be reproach, there would be a lot of diplomatic efforts," she told
CBC News. "I don't know what would happen in this administration. Would
there be threats? Would there be some people that are like, yeah,
everybody should have nuclear weapons? I really can't predict what this
particular administration would do."A TV screen shows a rocket
launch.Clandestine plants and secret programs-So far, all the countries
that have developed nuclear weapons — Israel, South Africa, India,
Pakistan and North Korea — began their efforts in secret.Drozdenko says
Canada’s own nuclear industry, the design of its reactors and the fact
that it has the world’s best uranium deposits would all give it a strong
hand were it ever to pursue such a risky course."Canada is probably
really well-positioned to do that, if Canada was determined," said
Drozdenko. "You have a lot of land that's not heavily populated, and if
you used technologies that didn't have a lot of energy or thermal
signature, I don't think the U.S. has its intelligence assets pointed at
Canada right now."At some point, such a program would inevitably become
known."It would require withdrawal from the non-proliferation treaty,
which would be really impactful to the treaty worldwide, especially as a
NATO country and up until now a pretty close ally of the U.S. I think
that would be pretty catastrophic to that treaty,” Drozdenko said.Fetter
said Canada could probably easily assemble a simple “gun-type” nuclear
weapon like the one used on Hiroshima, but would face scientific hurdles
if it tried to build a modern thermonuclear weapon without conducting
tests. North Korea required half a dozen tests to get there. In the U.S.,
Russia and China, supercomputers today have replaced actual testing.
Canada has the computing capacity but lacks the detailed data that
nuclear arms powers have assembled on materials science, and the
complicated timing and interactions inside a nuclear warhead — some of
the most closely guarded secrets in the world. But Fetter also said he
didn’t expect North Korea to be able to put a modern, two-stage
thermonuclear warhead on a ballistic missile and make it work."Canada
has a lot of smart people," he noted. With Canada embarked on a new era
of greater military spending, including the purchase of modern
submarines and its first foray into the world of cruise missiles, it is
clearly assembling elements that could bring it closer to "breakout" as a
nuclear arms power, if it desired. The question of how other countries
would react is the unknowable factor, said Drozdenko."Does Canada want
to be in the position of North Korea, the pariah state that's making
clandestine nuclear weapons?" she asked. So far, the answer has always
been no.

THIRD ANGEL: EUROPE
Then
one of the angels with wings showed me Europe from one end to the other
- from the north all the way down to Spain and Portugal. In his hand he
had a scale of measurement. I saw him fly over Europe, and I heard the
words: "I am grieved. I am grieved. Unrighteousness, uncleanness,
ungodliness - all over Europe. The sin has risen to heaven. The Holy
Spirit is grieved."I saw the rivers of Europe flooding and covering
millions of houses. Millions drown. After seeing this, I read the news a
few weeks ago: Czechoslovakia had the worst flooding ever. I also heard
that the big river in China is in tremendous danger of thousands of
houses being destroyed in flooding. I didn't know all this news until
after I had seen the vision and heard what the angels told me.Suddenly I
heard earthquakes all over Europe."Countries that have had no
earthquakes shall be shaken," said the angel. And suddenly, in my spirit,
I saw the Eiffel Tower in Paris crumbling and falling down. A great
part of Germany destroyed. The great city of London - destruction
everywhere. I saw floods all over Scandinavia. I looked to the south and
saw Spain and Portugal passing through hunger and great
destruction. Many will die from hunger all over Spain and Portugal. I was
disturbed by all this news, and I said:" Lord, what about your
children?"The angel said: "I shall prepare them. They shall be looking
for the appearing of the Lord. Many will cry to me in those days and I
will save them. I shall perform mighty miracles for them and show them
My power."So in the midst of great destruction, there will be the grace
of God in those countries. I was happy that God has His protection over
His children.
FIRES AND EXPLOSIONS
REVELATION 8:7
7 The
first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with
blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees

More than 500
properties under evacuation alert as wildfire burns north of West
Kelowna-Out-of-control fire is burning near the La Casa community on the
west side of Okanagan Lake-CBC News · Posted: Jul 26, 2026 12:26 AM EDT

A newly discovered out-of-control wildfire burning in B.C.’s
Central Okanagan has prompted an evacuation alert for more than 500
properties in a popular vacation destination north of West
Kelowna.Central Okanagan Emergency Management said the alert affects
more than 1,100 people in the La Casa area on the west side of the
Okanagan Lake, including La Casa Lakeside Resort and La Casa
Cottages.Residents and visitors under the alert are being told to
prepare to leave at a moment’s notice and be ready to remain away for an
extended period. The B.C. Wildfire Service said the fire (K51214) has
grown to an estimated 5.18 hectares, or about 0.05 square kilometres as
of Saturday evening since it was discovered at around 4 p.m., earlier in
the day. It says 14 firefighters are battling the fire alongside the
North Westside Fire Department, with multiple aircraft supporting the
response.Skimmer planes and helicopters are drawing water from Okanagan
Lake to attack the flames and the wildfire service is asking boaters to
leave areas where aircraft are operating to avoid interfering with
suppression efforts.Crews were observing Rank 2 and Rank 3 fire
behaviour, meaning the fire was burning along the surface with open
flames and spreading at a slow to moderate rate.
Lytton, B.C.,
hits 41 C, hottest temperature in Canada this year-Fraser Canyon
community 1 of 12 in B.C. to break daily heat records Wednesday-The

The heat wave that has scorched southern British Columbia this
week has seen temperatures pass 40 C for a second consecutive day in
the Fraser Canyon, marking the two hottest temperatures recorded in
Canada this year.Environment Canada says temperatures in Lytton hit 41.2
C on Wednesday, breaking a daily heat record set in 2006.Heat warnings
that have blanketed the southern half of the province this week have
receded, ending in Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, the Sunshine
Coast, portions of Vancouver Island and the North Coast. But more than 20
heat warnings remain in place, including in the Fraser Canyon, the
Okanagan, Kootenay, Shuswap and Cariboo areas. On Tuesday, temperatures
in Lytton hit 40.5 C, although this week's heat falls far short of the
49.6 C recorded in the village on June 29, 2021, a day before it was
largely destroyed by a wildfire. The weather forecast agency says Lytton
is among 12 B.C. communities that broke daily heat records on Wednesday,
with Cache Creek and Osoyoos both pushing past 39 C while Nanaimo,
Abbotsford, West Vancouver and Sechelt also broke previous marks. On
Vancouver Island, the community of Duncan recorded a high of 34.6 C,
edging past the previous record set almost a century ago in 1928.
Man's
death reported in Spain as wildfires also raging in France force
250,000 to flee-Final Tour de France stage shortened to redeploy
officers to wildfires-The Associated Press · Posted: Jul 25, 2026 8:30
AM EDT |
Wildfires in southern Europe this week have displaced
more than 250,000 people, including some 70,000 people evacuated in
central Spain. One man died in Manises, west of Valencia, the Spanish
municipality says on its Facebook page, marking the first reported death
in the blazes.A specially adapted cargo aircraft was sent to dump flame
retardants on a huge blaze raging in the Gironde region of southwestern
France.French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said the hulking A400M
aircraft will join 18 other water- and retardant-dropping planes and
helicopters waging an expected "long and very difficult" battle against
the blaze raging in the Gironde region of southwestern France. With winds
expected to shift in a west-to-east direction on Saturday afternoon,
potentially driving the fire closer to Bordeaux, fire crews and
authorities were digging trenches, using retardants and taking other
steps to block it, Nunez said. He said the fire was about 30 kilometres
west of the city and lost some of its intensity overnight. The government
mobilized soldiers to join the battle and was rushing in 1.5 million
face masks to protect against choking smoke.Multiple fast-moving
wildfires have forced the evacuation of at least 20,000 in southwestern
France, where locals have described the situation as a
'nightmare.'Authorities ordered people between the fire and Bordeaux to
evacuate, including from parts of the city's western suburbs and other
towns and villages.French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu described the
fires as unprecedented and said the Gironde blaze became so strong on
Friday that it had begun generating its own winds."Our priority is
clear: protecting human lives," he posted on X, adding that evacuation
orders "must be respected without delay."He said firefighting teams were
being reinforced Saturday with the addition of hundreds of soldiers and
that breathing masks to filter out smoke particles were being rushed to
the Gironde region for those exposed to the clouds of potentially
noxious fumes. The country cut the length of the Tour de France's final
stage by a third on Saturday to redeploy officers to battle raging
wildfires that forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of people,
including from some the suburbs of the wine region city of Bordeaux. The
extraordinary measure underscored the gravity of the fires in southwest
France. The riders will race inside Paris, rather than starting from
Thoiry west of the capital, on a circuit of 89 kilometres, down from the
133-kilometre route that had been planned. Part of the race's security
detail will instead be used "to reinforce the response efforts in the
areas affected by the wildfires," the Paris police department
said.Blazes caught authorities off guard-The virulence of the wildfires,
fuelled by high temperatures and the long-term effects of climate
change, caught fire crews and authorities off guard in both
countries.Firefighters in Spain said the blazes spread so fast and
violently that they could not be tackled head on. In France, some people
even fled by boat when flames swept through touristic towns on the
Atlantic coast.Dozens of French firefighters have been injured,
authorities said, but no deaths were reported in either country despite
the scenes of panic as townsfolk fled by car and police went door to
door to tell people to leave as large plumes of smoke darkened the
skies.Successive heat waves that hit unusually early and hard this year,
baking Europe with record-shattering high temperatures, have turned
forests and scrublands into tinderboxes.Fires have burned 130,000
hectares of forest already this year in Spain, up from an annual average
of 100,000 hectares over the past decade, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro
Sanchez said Saturday as he visited a command post west of Madrid. He
said more favourable weather Saturday offered "a window of opportunity"
for fire crews to bring the blazes under control. Madrid's regional
government said the fires decreased in intensity as winds and
temperatures dropped.Other European nations were helping, with Italy,
Greece, the Netherlands, Portugal, Croatia, Czechia and Slovakia already
providing or expected to deploy water-dumping planes and helicopters to
the Spanish and French fire fronts.Wildfire headed toward
Bordeaux-Gironde region prefect Sophie Brocas said on Friday night that
strong winds from the west were pushing the fire closer to the Bordeaux
metropolitan area and that it had grown to "an unprecedented
magnitude."Bordeaux's western suburbs covered by evacuation orders
included Le Haillan and parts of Eysines and Mérignac, where the city's
airport is located. The airport said it remained open but that its bus
and tram services were suspended. The Gironde blaze broke out Wednesday
near the Cap Ferret peninsula on France's Atlantic coast, 60 kilometres
from Bordeaux. Bordeaux authorities took in thousands of evacuees,
offering them food and shelter in an exhibition centre, and the city's
mayor said it could be equipped to welcome as many as 10,000 people if
that became necessary.Evacuation orders were sent with special alerts to
mobile phones, instructing people to leave, Brocas said."We want
everyone to be quickly brought to safety. We must act quickly together."
Wildfires ravage southwest France: Thousands face devastation after evacuation-France-Issued on: 26/07/2026 - 12:29
A
raging wildfire in southwest France forced the evacuation of 55,000
people overnight Sunday, bringing the total forced out of their homes to
220,000 in one region alone, as flames crept ever closer to the wine
region city of Bordeaux. Authorities in France's Gironde region, where
Bordeaux is located, issued overnight evacuation orders for five more
localities southwest of the historic city, as shifting, gusting winds
and arid conditions complicated the massive effort to limit the spread
of the monster blaze that has burned out of control since midweek

Two firefighters died in France, and another died in Italy
while working to tackle wildfires that have devastated Europe this
week.Wildfires continued to spread across parts of France, Spain and
Italy on Wednesday, forcing thousands of people from their homes amid
soaring temperatures. In southwestern France's Gironde department, more
than 10,000 people were evacuated overnight due to a blaze that's
ravaged more than 2,000 hectares in the region, local authorities
said. The fire broke out in the town of Saumos on Wednesday and has
advanced southwest towards the areas of Le Porge and Lège Cap-Ferret.As
of Thursday morning, 500 firefighters are tackling the blaze, with
aerial reinforcements on the way.Two firefighters were killed while
tackling flames in the Mérignac suburb of Bordeaux on Tuesday.French
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez met with their families and colleagues
on Wednesday to pay tribute to the pair."On behalf of the president of
the Republic, the government and the entire nation, which owes them so
much, I expressed our boundless gratitude and our unwavering support,"
he wrote in a post on social media.Multiple departments in southern
France remain under a red alert for forest fires on Thursday, per
Météo-France.Italy-Fires have also broken out in Sicily, where around
6,000 emergency responders, including firefighters, forest guards and
civil protection officers have been mobilised to assist.According to the
regional government, 300 of the island's 344 reported fires had been
extinguished as of Wednesday."The most critical blazes, where teams from
the fire brigade, civil protection and the forestry corps are currently
in action, are in Casaboli, Bivona, Alimena, San Cataldo, Galati
Mamertino, certain areas of the Madonie Park and the Syracuse area," it
said in a press release. One firefighter named by officials as Alessandro
Marchi died while responding to a fire in San Cataldo, Italian Interior
Minister Matteo Piantedosi announced."He lost his life whilst carrying
out his duty, in the service of the community. On behalf of myself and
the Ministry of the Interior, I extend my deepest condolences to his
family," Piantedosi said.Spain-A major wildfire has also been declared
to the southwest of the Spanish capital, Madrid, between the towns of
Almorox and Villa del Prado.Video footage posted to social media by
Spain's Civil Guard showed officers going home to home as residents were
evacuated from parts of the area.As of Wednesday night, 88
firefighters, 35 vehicles, and a helicopter had been deployed to help
fight the fire.It comes after a devastating wildfire in Spain's
Guadalajara province had already burnt through 32,000 hectares to the
north of Madrid.According to data from the European Forest Fires
Information System, wildfires have burnt around 254,388 hectares across
the EU in 2026.This is higher than the long-term average but remains
below the 270,449 hectares that burnt in 2025 over the same period, per
the data.
enezuela’s twin earthquakes: the toll one month
later-Earthquake figures in Venezuela, file image, July 2026-The
Associated Press.By Jesús Maturana-Published on 25/07/2026
One
month after twin earthquakes struck Venezuela, the official death toll
has surpassed 5,500, with 16,700 injured. Damage is estimated at $19.6
billion, while thousands remain homeless and the number of missing
people has not been updated since late June.Thirty days have passed
since the two earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitudestruck
northern Venezuela just 39 seconds apart on the night of 24 June. What
was described at the time as a rare seismic phenomenon**,** a seismic
doublet, has turned into one of the worst natural disasters the country
has experienced in more than a century.A month on, the figures continue
to evolve, although at a much slower pace than in the first few days,
and there are still gaps the government has yet to fill. The most recent
official toll, released last Friday by the president of the National
Assembly, Jorge RodrÃguez, puts the death toll at 5,546 and the number
of injured at 16,740.The figure has remained largely unchanged for
weeks, which suggests medical teams are no longer receiving new serious
cases, while the death toll continues to rise as debris removal work
progresses and forensic teams continue identifying bodies, many of them
buried unidentified in mass graves in cemeteries in La Guaira. The most
sensitive figure, however, is the one the Venezuelan government has
stopped updating. Since 25 June, the day after the seismic doublet, the
authorities have not provided a new official figure for the missing,
which at that point stood at 157 people. In that vacuum, a citizens’
initiative has emerged, Desaparecidos del Terremoto de Venezuela, which
centralises reports from relatives and keeps a register containing
reports on nearly 29,500 people whose whereabouts have been reported as
unknown. That gap between what the state acknowledges and what citizens
themselves are documenting is one of the most questioned aspects of the
way the emergency has been handled.Material damage and
displacement-Beyond the lives lost, the earthquake has left a
significant economic scar. A World Bank report published last week
estimates direct physical damage at around 19.6 billion dollars.Of that
amount, 9.3 billion correspond to homes destroyed or severely damaged,
5.2 billion to public infrastructure, including hospitals, schools and
other essential facilities, and nearly 5 billion to commercial and
industrial buildings. On the ground, the latest official count
records:856 buildings affected, 190 of which collapsed completelyThe
number of families left without housing stands at 17,907, while 23,122
people remain in 107 temporary locations set up in Caracas and La
Guaira.128,324 families have received some form of assistance from the
authorities since the start of the emergencySince the main shock, 1,405
aftershocks have also been recorded, some strong enough to complicate
work on structures that had already been weakened. One month on, life is
trying to resume-As the weeks go by, the search-and-rescue phase has
given way to debris clearance and reconstruction, a process which the
authorities themselves acknowledge will take months, if not years. Some
basic services, such as electricity in certain parts of La Guaira, were
restored about two weeks after the quake, but normality remains partial.
Organisations such as Médecins Sans Frontières are keeping mobile
clinics operating in the worst-hit areas to meet healthcare needs that
the public system, already weakened before the earthquake, is unable to
cover fully. The tragedy also struck at a politically sensitive moment
for Venezuela, which is undergoing a transition following the arrest of
former president Nicolás Maduro at the beginning of the year, with Delcy
RodrÃguez heading an interim government that has yet to set a date for
elections. The way international aid is being managed, including
cooperation from countries such as Israel and efforts to unblock
Venezuelan assets with United States support, is emerging as one of the
factors that will determine the pace of reconstruction in the coming
months.
More than 700,000 evacuated as Typhoon Noul makes
landfall in southern China-Noul is strongest typhoon to make landfall in
China this year, new agency says-The Associated Press · Posted: Jul 26,

Typhoon Noul made landfall early Sunday,
bringing winds and heavy rain to southern China, including Hong Kong.It
prompted the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of people in Guangdong
province, with the region on high alert and hundreds of flights
cancelled.China's national weather centre said Noul made landfall along
the Huidong county coast in the city of Huizhou in southern Guangdong
province at approximately 3:50 a.m. Sunday. China's official Xinhua News
Agency said Noul was the strongest typhoon to make landfall in China so
far this year.Hong Kong's Observatory said Noul, with maximum sustained
winds of 110 km/h near its centre, was moving Sunday into inland
Guangdong and weakening progressively, bringing strong winds and heavy
rain to parts of the region.More than 715,000 people had been relocated
for safety in Guangdong province, according to state-owned China
National Radio. Train services in the province were cancelled for
Sunday, according to the China News Service.China's National
Meteorological Center expected parts of southern Guangdong and
southeastern Fujian provinces to experience heavy rain and strong winds
over the weekend. Many trees were seen uprooted in Huilai county,
located on the coast of Guangdong province, state broadcaster CCTV
reported.Hong Kong's airport authority said around 350 flights were
cancelled Sunday. At least nine people were injured across the city
during the typhoon period, according to Hong Kong authorities. As Noul
approached Hong Kong, parts of a large scaffolding on a highrise
building collapsed Saturday afternoon, local police said, although
initial reports indicated there were no injuries.Taiwan's Central
Weather Administration said Noul was bringing rainfall to parts of
southern and eastern Taiwan. It was passing over waters south of Taiwan,
and was moving away from the island Saturday.Earlier this month,
Typhoon Bavi brought strong winds and rain to eastern China, leading to
the evacuation of more than two million people. It made landfall on July
11. Another, Maysak, made landfall in southern China on July 3.
As
Ebola cases in Congo near 3,000, more health workers go on strike-More
than 1,300 have died so far; workers say they're protesting against
months of unpaid bonuses-The Associated Press · Posted: Jul 25, 2026
2:19 PM EDT |
Health workers at an Ebola treatment centre in
eastern Congo went on strike on Saturday, demanding their pay. The
walkout disrupted care for patients in the epicentre of the country's
rapidly growing outbreak. The number of confirmed cases in Congo has
reached 2,973, including 1,309 deaths, according to government data
released on Friday, in what authorities say is the fastest-growing
outbreak on record. The Elikya Ebola Treatment Center in Bunia, Ituri
province, came to a standstill after doctors, nurses and security staff
stopped work.About 100 health workers protested outside the treatment
centre on Saturday. They said the unpaid bonuses were undermining morale
and disrupting patient care, and called on Congolese authorities to
resolve the back pay so they could resume their work."We need to be
paid, because in the meantime the disease is spreading at the treatment
centre," said Martin Bolombi, one of the striking workers."I've already
had five people die who are still inside there. A solution must be found
for us."In a statement issued Friday, staff said they had unanimously
voted to strike until "concrete solutions" were found to resolve "two
months of unpaid performance bonuses."Strike comes a day after PM
visit-The strike comes a day after Congo's Prime Minister Judith Suminwa
came to Ituri, touring major treatment hubs in Rwampara and Mongbwalu
to assess the outbreak response. During her visit in Mongbwalu, she
faced urgent demands from health-care personnel protesting payment
issues.Dr. Adelard Lufungula, operations manager for the Ebola response,
said Saturday the payment issue is "being resolved," with workers now
paid via mobile money instead of cash, and that the backlog "should be
cleared" in the coming days.Last week, health workers at Bunia General
Hospital, the region's largest medical centre, had already gone on
strike over unpaid salaries. Some told The Associated Press they had not
received any payment since they started work at the onset of the
outbreak.A woman washes her hands in a sink. The World Health
Organization (WHO) says more than 100 health-care workers have been
infected since the beginning of the outbreak. The Central African nation
has been battling the Ebola outbreak caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus
since May 15. A total of 766 patients remain in isolation or in
hospitals, while 540 have recovered so far, according to data from
Congo's Ministry of Health. The eastern province of Ituri accounts for
nearly 90 per cent of confirmed cases.Patient zero still hasn't been
identified-The outbreak continues to spread faster than health officials
can track despite an expanding response. A key challenge is that
patient zero has yet to be identified in the outbreak while displacement
from armed conflict and illegal mining in the region have made it
difficult to trace thousands who have come in contact with infected
individuals. The response is also hampered by a funding gap, attacks on
health centres, an ongoing conflict in eastern Congo and mistrust among
local communities. The current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic
of Congo is not the first, but a new strain, lack of tools and war are
making it worse. For The National, CBC’s Eli Glasner talks to doctors on
the ground about what they’re up against and why they say foreign aid
cuts are increasing the danger.Furthermore, there is a lack of approved
vaccines or treatments for the Bundibugyo virus, unlike the more common
Zaire virus for which there is a vaccine and which was responsible for
most of Congo's past 16 outbreaks of the disease.Enrolment in a highly
anticipated study of two possible Ebola treatments recently started in
Ituri.WHO says the global risk of the outbreak spreading outside Central
Africa is low, noting that Ebola spreads through direct contact with
the bodily fluids of an infected person rather than through the air,
making it much harder to spread than respiratory viruses. The health risk
to Canadians is considered low, according to the Public Health Agency
of Canada. Earlier this week, Ottawa barred the entry of foreign
nationals who had been in Congo in the preceding 21 days, as part of an
effort to curb the spread. The temporary measure will last until Aug.
