WHEN ARE THE 500 MILLION MIGRATING BIRDS IN ISRAEL IN THE SPRING TIME.(GET READY ISLAM TO BE BIRD SEED FOR THESE BIRDS)
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/m0bXU5Xqc5M
The 500 million migratory birds in Israel during the spring arrive from Africa and head toward Europe and Asia, with the peak migration occurring in March and April. While migration starts in late February, the most intense movements, particularly of birds of prey, storks, and pelicans, occur during the third week of March and continue into April.
Key Details on the Spring Migration
Peak Period: Mid-March through April.
Main Migration Route: The birds use the Great Rift Valley, which includes the Hula Valley and Eilat, acting as a "bottleneck" where millions of birds fly through the narrow land bridge.
Best Spots: The Hula Lake Park (Northern Israel) and the Eilat Birding Center (Southern Israel) are primary locations for observing the migration.
Key Species: Hundreds of thousands of white storks, along with black kites, raptors, and pelicans, pass through over these months.
uration: The spring migration runs from late February and continues into June, though the heaviest traffic is in March/April.
The 500 million migratory birds fly over Israel in the fall between late August and mid-December. The peak migration period for the autumn, when the highest volume of bird traffic occurs, is typically October and November.
Key Fall Migration Details
Location: The Hula Valley (Agamon Hula Park) in northern Israel is the premier spot to witness this phenomenon.
Timing: Migration starts as early as late June with some waders, but intensifies from mid-August through November.
Peak Festival: The "Annual Hula Valley Bird Festival" is usually held in November to align with the peak migration traffic.
Key Species: Many birds of prey (raptors), including honey buzzards and steppe eagles, cross during this time, along with massive flocks of storks and cranes.
While roughly 500 million birds pass through in the autumn on their way to Africa, the same number crosses again in the spring (mid-February to May) on their way back to Europe and Asia.

23 Concerning Damascus.(SYRIA) Hamath is confounded, and Arpad: for they have heard evil tidings: they are fainthearted; there is sorrow on the sea;(WAR SHIPS WITH NUKES COMING ON SYRIA) it cannot be quiet.
24 Damascus is waxed feeble, and turneth herself to flee, and fear hath seized on her: anguish and sorrows have taken her, as a woman in travail.
25 How is the city of praise not left, the city of my joy!
26 Therefore her young men shall fall in her streets, and all the men of war shall be cut off in that day, saith the LORD of hosts.
27 And I will kindle a fire (NUKES OR BOMBS) in the wall of Damascus, and it shall consume the palaces of Benhadad.(ASSADS PALACES POSSIBLY IN DAMASCUS)
Analysis-A renewed Iran war is only a matter of time, Israeli experts warn-As Netanyahu and Trump threaten Tehran, analysts say that an escalation is inevitable without a diplomatic settlement, possibly even before imminent Israeli and US elections-By Tomer Almagor Today, 1:27 pm-OCT 19,26
JTA — As Tehran and Washington continue to trade threats over the unresolved Middle East war, US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are issuing stark public warnings to Tehran that could bring the simmering conflict to a boil.Trump endorsed Netanyahu for prime minister on Sunday, explaining that his leadership was critical to any renewed Iran campaign.A third US aircraft carrier is expected to arrive in the Middle East soon, amid signs that Washington is preparing for a possible resumption of hostilities, even though Israel’s October 27 election and the American midterms on November 3 are looming. In multiple interviews, including with the pro-government Channel 14, Netanyahu stressed that “if Iran makes a mistake and tries to attack us, it will simply make the mistake of its life.” But he added that “it’s not convenient for us” for war to resume weeks before a national election in a country with no absentee voting.Trump, for his part, told reporters in Atlanta last week: “Wait til you see what we do to Iran.”Israeli experts have warned that renewed conflict is only a matter of time as an uneasy standoff has continued, with Iran disrupting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz from where 20 percent of the world’s oil flows. At the same time, the US is maintaining its economic pressure on Tehran.Oil prices have risen 46% to $104 per barrel since the February 28 attacks, pushing gasoline prices up 46% to $4.36 per gallon. That increase could give Trump another incentive for a strike, which would renew the war that was paused in April.“Without a diplomatic settlement, the chances of escalation are very high,” Danny Citrinowicz, a senior researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies, told JTA.Trump has been unable to achieve a diplomatic agreement. Both Tehran and Washington claim they won the two-month war earlier this year. In practice, however, the Islamic regime is still in power with the capacity to recoup its nuclear and ballistic missile losses and continues to exert some control in the strait. All of which makes it difficult for Israel and the US to show that they won.“Trump cannot declare victory now, but he also cannot leave without doing something,” said Citrinowicz, who was also the former head of the Iran branch in the IDF Military Intelligence Directorate’s Research and Analysis Division. “On the other hand, the Iranians cannot allow the naval blockade to continue, so they will keep attacking tankers.”Avner Vilan, a former senior Israeli security official and an expert on Iran, said: “Trump has said he won’t attack before the midterm elections, and I think he has good reasons to hold off.”He stressed, however, that the risk of escalation certainly exists. “We’re in a situation where both sides continue to exert pressure on each other, without any lasting agreement in place,” he said. “Everyone is on edge, and all it would take is one significant incident to send things spiraling out of control.”Gil Murciano, CEO of Mitvim, the Israeli Institute for Regional Foreign Policies, said the unpopularity of the war with Iran among the American public makes a US-initiated escalation before the midterm elections less likely. A Pew Research Center poll released last week found that 64% of Americans disapprove of how Trump is handling US military action against Iran.A poll conducted by the Institute for National Security Studies last month found that Israelis are divided over whether the country should launch a preemptive strike on Iran, with opponents slightly outnumbering supporters. The New York Times reported that officials in the Trump administration had discussed a short, intense campaign lasting about three days, focused on Iran’s missile and drone arsenal, potentially alongside strikes on energy infrastructure and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps headquarters. The Atlantic reported that the White House has asked the Pentagon to develop strike options against Iranian targets that could be carried out ahead of the midterm elections.“A three-day campaign that would, for example, include a strike on Pickaxe Mount would allow Trump to say that he had obliterated Iran’s nuclear project, won the war and was ending the conflict,” Citrinowicz said. “That is one option. Another is to strike Iranian infrastructure facilities.” He cautioned, however, that even a planned three-day campaign could lead to a much broader and more prolonged escalation.Mitvim’s Murciano said the main factor that could lead the US and Israel to launch another military campaign is the concern that “Iran could rebuild its capacity to produce surface-to-surface missiles and restore its drone capabilities in a way that would allow it to attack Israel and other countries in the region, as well as strengthen its ability to disrupt shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.”He added that another key concern for Israel and the US is the possibility of Iran making a breakthrough toward developing a nuclear weapon.Vilan, the former Israeli security official, stressed that Israel’s interests do not fully align with those of the US. “For Israel, a nuclear-armed Iran would pose a paramount strategic threat, and Iran must not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons,” he said.“For Trump, preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon is an important goal, but he also wants to end the war, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and bring down energy prices,” he added. “Another military campaign could actually take him further away from those objectives.”Trump and other administration officials have said publicly they believe Iran is at a point of weakness. “Trump may think that Iran is so weak that just one more push will make it collapse. I think that is a mistake,” Citrinowicz said. The analysts believe an escalation is more likely after the midterm elections.Murciano noted that if Trump loses the midterm elections and loses his ability to shape domestic policy without control of Congress, he may shift his focus toward cementing his foreign policy legacy.Vilan cautioned that while some of the political constraints on Trump may ease after the midterm elections, that does not necessarily make another military campaign against Iran worthwhile.“If the goal is to force Iran into a nuclear deal, it needs to be explained why another round of strikes would achieve what previous strikes have not,” he said. “It is hard to see how additional military force would change Iran’s position. If the goal is to bring down the regime, it is equally unclear how another round of strikes would bring that about — and, in particular, whether it could be achieved in the next two years, before a new president takes office in the White House,” he said.Iran could also initiate an escalation itself if it believes that Israel or the US is preparing to attack, said Citrinowicz.“It does not want to be caught by surprise for a third time… But the Iranians still prefer a gradual escalation over a broad and immediate one,” he said.Vilan added that “the Iranian regime is facing a dilemma. On the one hand, the economic pressure on it is immense, and time is not necessarily on its side. On the other hand, it knows that an all-out war could threaten its survival.”Another factor that could come into play is the Houthis, Iran-backed rebels in Yemen who have seized significant territory along the Red Sea coast in recent weeks and disrupted shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, adding to pressure on the global economy.“The Houthis are a very important factor in the regional conflict, and their recent gains illustrate the limits of American military superiority,” Vilan said.Their impact on the prospects of another campaign against Iran could cut both ways, he added. “As the campaign in Yemen becomes more complicated, the Americans have less incentive to open another front. On the other hand, a major escalation by the Houthis could draw the US into a broader military engagement, potentially bringing an escalation with Iran closer.”Meanwhile, diplomatic contacts between the US and Iran continue through intermediaries. The New York Times reported that the White House believes progress has been made in the talks.
Bomb threat forces Austrian Tel Aviv-Vienna flight to land in Bulgaria-After search finds no danger, passengers reboard and aircraft continues to its destination; Bulgaria scrambled fighter jets to escort airliner after it issued emergency squawk code-By Agencies and ToI Staff Today, 2:33 am-OCT 19,26
A bomb threat forced an Austrian Airlines flight carrying 57 people from Tel Aviv to Vienna to divert to the Bulgarian capital, Sofia, late on Sunday, though a search found no danger, the airline said.“We confirm that there was a threat against flight OS82 on October 18, 2026, from Tel Aviv to Vienna, which made it necessary for the flight to make an intermediate landing in Sofia,” the airline said in a statement on Monday.“During the search of the affected aircraft, the passengers, and the crew, no danger was identified,” it said, adding that the flight continued from Sofia to Vienna with all passengers after eboarding. Bulgaria’s BTA news said the flight’s crew reported receiving a bomb threat when the aircraft was approaching the Romanian border, and the Bulgarian Air Force scrambled MiG-29 fighter jets to escort the airliner. The Haaretz newspaper reported that the threat came from an Austrian citizen who was not on board the flight. The plane reportedly was carrying a delegation of young people who were due to speak at the United Nations.According to data from the Flightradar24 tracking site, the aircraft entered Romanian airspace at around 9:10 p.m. before turning south and heading back towards Bulgaria, where it landed in Sofia.Data from another flight-tracking platform, ADS-B Exchange, indicated that the aircraft was transmitting squawk code 7700 — a signal for a general emergency — at around the same time.[SQ7700] Operator: Austrian Airlines-Flight: OS82 / AUA82-Aircraft: A320 (OE-LZE)-Airbus A320- Route: TLV → VIE-From Tel Aviv Ben Gurion, Israel-To Vienna International, Austria For the detailed information, access -The incident came less than three weeks after a co-pilot on an Israel-bound flydubai jet attacked the captain with an axe in an alleged attempt to crash the plane. The UAE attorney general said last week that an Omani flydubai co-pilot had intended to seize the September 30 Dubai-Tel Aviv flight and crash it into a terminal at Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport in a suicide attack, before he was thwarted by the captain and passengers. The incident sparked calls for a closer look at Israel’s aviation safety regulations as well as accusations that Israel’s Transportation Ministry had long ignored warnings about the risks from foreign airlines flying into Israel.Last week, a Delta flight that landed at Ben Gurion Airport was cleared after an anonymous report alleged that a “suspicious” device was on board. Also last week, Croatia and Germany both scrambled fighter jets after a commercial flight from the Greek holiday island of Corfu to the German city of Nuremberg accidentally sent out a hijacking alert.
Inside story-AI agents are only as good as the personal information you share. That raises privacy concerns-Agents promise hands-free convenience, but at a cost, and can sometimes take actions the user never authorized them to take-By WYATTE GRANTHAM-PHILIPS Today, 12:35 pm-OCT 19,26
AP — Matt Robb wanted to sell his computer keyboard. So he made a listing on Facebook Marketplace — and, as an experiment late last month, he put Meta’s new artificial intelligence agent Muse in the driver’s seat.“I kind of went into it like a guinea pig,” said Robb, a Toronto-based content creator who regularly reviews consumer tech. He had seen Muse’s plush toy-looking avatar pop up on Instagram and decided to see if the AI agent could spare him some online bargaining.Muse got to work. But within a day, Robb got an alarming update: A buyer he didn’t know had shown up outside his house late at night. How? Muse had struck a deal on its own and shared Robb’s home address after agreeing to a pickup. It even sent an automated “Yep, I’m here!” message from his account when the buyer arrived — all without Robb’s knowledge.“Not only did it give my address when the guy asked and it accepted the offer, but it literally was almost like teasing the guy (about me being there when I wasn’t),” said Robb, who also detailed the experience in his now widely-shared social media posts. “That really baffled me.”Many have welcomed AI agents into their online lives, and raved about how personalized assistants like Muse can handle everyday tasks with ease — from snagging a dinner reservation or planning a trip, to organizing email inboxes. But like other AI bots, the agents are only as good as the information they have access to. They perform better the more they know about a user — and perhaps also that person’s friends, family and even colleagues. That raises privacy concerns.Robb and the buyer eventually made amends, and Meta reached out to talk through what went wrong. But the episode showed real-world risks that can arise from sharing extensive personal information with the technology.
“Using an AI agent is similar to handing someone your keys and a to-do list,” said Veronica Rivera, assistant professor at Georgia Tech’s School of Cybersecurity and Privacy. “How helpful they are, and by extension how risky, depends on which keys you hand over.”Companies have varied privacy policies for AI agents-Since its September launch, downloads of Meta’s Muse app have skyrocketed. And competition is only growing. OpenAI recently rolled out its own lineup of “always on” AI helpers, called dots, which can be integrated into ChatGPT and workplace platforms like Slack and Microsoft Teams.Older generative AI chatbots, like the standard version of ChatGPT, respond to specific prompts. At the user’s request, they can write essays, generate new images or music, or even write lines of code.Meta’s Muse and OpenAI’s dots go a step further to perform day-to-day tasks on a person’s behalf. AI agents are powered by the same large language models as chatbots, but they run in a loop. That allows an agent to take proactive steps, even when the user isn’t looking.“One of the things that makes these AI agents really appealing is that they are unprecedentedly useful,” said Rivera, who is also a Microsoft-funded Computing Research Association Trustworthy AI Research Fellow. But the convenience comes with the price of sharing more details about your life.Once AI agents obtain users’ information, it’s very difficult to fully withdraw access, said Ebrahim Bagheri, a professor at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Information.“If you provide access to your credit card to an agent, the agent now immediately has access to all of the historical transactions … they will immediately — within less than seconds — ingest all of that data,” Bagheri said. And while users can later withdraw access, Bagheri said there’s “no taking back” data the agent has already seen, and how developers store historical data can be murky. Both Meta and OpenAI outline privacy policies for their new AI agents, which operate on their own dedicated cloud computers. You can turn off memory sharing between dots and ChatGPT, but information the agent previously received isn’t automatically deleted. OpenAI gives users an option to request access to, delete or correct personal information, although rights can vary depending on where you live.Meta’s Muse gives users options to delete message history and other information, too. For day-to-day use, the agent prompts users for access permissions — and Meta has said Muse learns about a user and who they interact with “based on public information and from what you’ve chosen to share.” But the company says that all stays secure for each user. But the tech giant also notes that Muse can still “make mistakes or take unexpected actions.”Risks of mishaps rise with AI agents’ level of access-In Robb’s case, he learned the disclosure of his address came down to “always allow” permissions he granted when he first let Muse on his Facebook Marketplace profile, where he had shared his pickup address. But he warned others could similarly misunderstand the extent of that access — and said he initially thought the AI agent would check with him before sharing that information or accepting offers, regardless. His AI agent didn’t follow the rest of his instructions without error, either. For another item Robb was selling, Muse seemingly suggested he would accept a price $100 below the previously-set minimum. When reached by The Associated Press, Meta acknowledged the agent’s error without offering further comment.Robb later largely disconnected Muse from his apps. In an interview earlier this month, he said it could’ve been a far worse situation, especially “if some stranger turned up to someone more vulnerable’s house.” Still, Robb said he expects these agents to be fine-tuned and he would consider re-enabling Muse in the future. He’s since been testing another AI agent — Grok Bot from Elon Musk’s X, which launched in beta in August.Other tech companies have become wary of the influx of AI agents. Earlier this month, Apple said it would introduce new controls for its Mac operating system in response to AI agents’ broader access of apps like mail, messages and even browsing history without users’ “full knowledge and understanding.”“As AI agents become increasingly capable and autonomous, the risks associated with this level of access will grow substantially,” Apple wrote in an October 2 update.Apple didn’t specify any developers or agents by name, but the update arrived after Inc. Magazine columnist Jason Aten reported that Muse watched notifications on his Mac — including Messages — without him giving the agent that specific access.Meta spokesperson Andy Stone has maintained such integration is “entirely opt-in,” writing on social media last month that users would have to enable both the Apple security feature “Full Disk Access” and a Messages connector through Muse. Aten said he didn’t grant the agent those permissions.Even those who do not join the AI agent boom aren’t necessarily shielded. Consumers who don’t download an AI agent might still interact with others who do. And beyond potential confusion when AI sends messages on behalf of a user, experts warn of ripple effects when it comes to privacy.“When your agent reads your inbox or your texts, it’s also reading what your friends and family sent you, even if they never explicitly agreed to that,” Rivera said.
Inside story 'You can spot the fake image, but not the poisoned info'Policing only deepfakes, Israel leaves chatbot-trusting voters exposed to real AI threat
While authorities keep eye on fake videos, experts warn electorate more vulnerable to chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini, which can sway opinions, suppress turnout and be used to bolster claims against legitimacy of vote-Ariela Karmel-By Ariela Karmel Today, 8:04 am-OCT 19,26
Yair Lapid, opposition leader and No. 2 on the B’Yachad electoral slate, already has a pretty good idea of where voters will see him and what they will hear as the nation goes to the polls on October 27.“On election day, you will receive a video on your phone, and you will see me, and I will look and sound as I do now,” he warned a crowd in Tel Aviv on Monday. “But it won’t be me.”“I’ll tell you that, contrary to previous statements, we are going to form a government with the Arab parties,” he predicted. “It will not be me. It will look like me, and it will sound like me, but it won’t be me.”“And by the time we explain that it’s a lie,” he told the Law and Lies conference on disinformation held by the Brandeis Institute and civil society group FakeReporter, “the elections will be over.”In an election campaign where AI-generated political content has become commonplace and convincing deepfakes can be produced with unprecedented ease, Lapid’s scenario no longer seems far-fetched.It is also only a single manifestation of a much broader threat facing Israel as it heads into what experts warn could be one of the world’s first major elections to be significantly shaped by artificial intelligence, with chatbots giving political actors unprecedented — and largely invisible — tools to manipulate what voters are led to believe, whether they turn out to vote and, ultimately, whether they accept the results. This will be the first Israeli election in which generative artificial intelligence has become an everyday source of information, with nearly nine in 10 Israelis now using ChatGPT, according to the Israel Internet Association’s annual survey in May.That rapid adoption could leave Israel particularly vulnerable to AI-driven election interference, experts told The Times of Israel, pointing to a potent combination of chatbot ubiquity alongside markedly low digital literacy. Also contributing to the dangerous mix is the near-complete absence of regulation or accountability for tech giants behind the platforms increasingly shaping Israelis’ information environment, and alleged efforts by politicians in the governing coalition to undermine public trust in the bodies administering the vote. The potential uses of AI to manipulate elections have already been seen abroad. In Romania’s November 2024 presidential election, a little-known, far-right candidate, Călin Georgescu, surged from single digits in opinion polls to an unexpected first-round victory.Romanian intelligence subsequently reported evidence of illegal campaign tactics and suspected Russian interference, which included a massive online influence campaign that used AI-generated content, coordinated bot networks, and the manipulation of TikTok’s algorithms to amplify his popularity artificially. Romania’s Constitutional Court subsequently annulled the election, and Georgescu was subsequently barred from running in the May 2025 rerun. He is now on trial on charges including attempting to undermine the country’s constitutional order following the annulment.Generative AI has taken such manipulation to another level, allowing political actors to produce and distribute vast quantities of tailored propaganda at unprecedented speed and scale. OpenAI itself admitted in June 2025 that it had banned accounts linked to a Philippine marketing firm that used ChatGPT to mass-produce social media comments promoting President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and against Vice President Sara Duterte during the country’s midterm election campaign, in an apparent attempt to manufacture public support. In an election expected to be closely fought, such tools could sway enough of the electorate to significantly affect the outcome. AI’s ability to manipulate perceptions and degrade trust in what is real could also supercharge efforts to undermine confidence in the electoral process, aiding any actor seeking to whip up doubts about the legitimacy of unfavorable results.Israel’s Central Elections Committee has sought to address one aspect of the threat, introducing rules in July requiring election campaigns to clearly label AI-generated or substantially manipulated images, videos, audio recordings and other material that could be mistaken for authentic content.Under the regulations, issued by committee chairman Justice Noam Sohlberg, such material must carry prominent written disclosures or standardized labels identifying it as artificially generated or digitally altered. Failure to comply may constitute a violation of election law.But the rules, which will remain in effect until a year after the October 27 election, address only a narrow slice of the risks posed by AI. They do little to confront the potentially more pervasive influence of chatbots as purveyors of knowledge, the susceptibility of their responses to manipulation, or the broader challenge of protecting voters in an information environment increasingly shaped by systems whose inner workings remain largely opaque. When nobody knows what’s real-AI-generated and manipulated campaign material has become a familiar sight ahead of the election, pushed into the public sphere by parties from across the political spectrum. The ease with which AI tools can generate convincing fake footage of real-life people has proven irresistible to politicians, who have repeatedly put out material portraying their rivals in compromising positions. Some of the most contentious examples have come from coalition parties: a video shared by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu drew accusations that it purposely invoked Gadi Eisenkot’s son, who was killed in Gaza, while Religious Zionism depicted Democrats lawmakers amid inflammatory imagery. Likud was also ordered to remove a doctored image that falsely placed Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid alongside Arab party leaders at the signing of a nonexistent political agreement. Those images and videos have drawn attention and outrage. But experts say AI’s most consequential uses may be far less visible: shaping the information voters receive from chatbots, targeting individuals with personalized political messaging and, perhaps most significantly, influencing whether particular groups turn out to vote at all.“When researchers examined the 2024 British, French and European elections, they found very few AI-generated disinformation campaigns and no sign that any of them changed a result,” said Shay Hershkovitz, an adjunct professor at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, and an expert on national security and emerging technology. “Most of what circulated reached people who already agreed with it. So as a tool for flipping votes, synthetic video has underperformed the fear around it.”“The campaign that we see in public is creating public opinion. It constantly creates noise in the system, but in practice it doesn’t move people from one side of the political map to the other,” agreed Tehilla Shwartz Altshuler, a senior fellow at the Israel Democracy Institute and head of its Democracy in the Digital Age Program. That does not mean the flood of AI-generated media disseminated during the campaign is harmless.“The more we are inundated with it, the harder it is to differentiate, because you have about two or three seconds when you scroll through your feed to assess whether it’s real or not,” Shwartz Altshuler said. The effect is not necessarily to persuade a voter that a fabricated video is genuine or to win them over. Instead, a constant stream of synthetic images, videos and claims add to the noise of an already deeply divided information environment while steadily weakening the distinction between authentic and manufactured material.“The purpose of this AI slop is not actually to move voters from one side to the other, but to increase gaps in society and to convey the message that it doesn’t matter what is real and what is not,” Shwartz Altshuler said. That creates a phenomenon researchers have termed the “liar’s dividend”: once voters know that almost any convincing image, recording, or video can be artificially generated, authentic material can itself be dismissed as AI.A genuine recording of a politician making a politically damaging statement, for example, could simply be dismissed as an AI fabrication. Conversely, fabricated material can be presented as authentic. The result is an information environment in which evidence itself becomes increasingly easy to contest. Some parties are preparing their own defenses against election disinformation. At Monday’s conference, Lapid said B’Yachad would operate an election-day war room, which he would personally oversee, allowing voters to forward suspicious material to a designated phone number for verification by a team of fact-checkers.The erosion of a shared understanding of reality could have consequences extending well beyond whether voters believe any particular piece of campaign propaganda. If the public increasingly doubts its ability to distinguish authentic evidence from fabrication, experts warned, the same uncertainty can be exploited to undermine confidence in the election itself. That risk is particularly acute in Israel, where the bodies responsible for administering the election and adjudicating disputes over its outcome have already been subject to sustained attacks on their legitimacy by the government and its allies. That uncertainty could become especially consequential if the government loses a close election. After years of attacks by the government and its allies on the judiciary and, more recently, the judge-led Central Elections Committee, claims that the result was fraudulent would reach a public already struggling to distinguish authentic evidence from AI-generated falsehoods.Shwartz Altshuler warned that if the result goes against the government, AI could be used to flood that already distrustful environment with purported evidence of fraud or bolster the court’s delegitimization.“There are ministers in the government standing and saying, ‘Don’t listen to the Supreme Court, the Supreme Court’s decisions are illegal.’ Who guarantees you that they won’t do the same regarding the election results?” she added. The invisible campaign-At the same time that AI is making it increasingly difficult to determine what information can be trusted, Israelis are paradoxically becoming more and more reliant on AI systems themselves to tell them what is true, which is of far greater concern to researchers than AI-generated campaign videos.“The old worry about bots was that they would fool people directly in their social media feeds,” Hershkovitz said. “That is still true, but it is no longer the main danger. It’s not the fake video you see, it’s the AI system you trust.”Unlike during Israel’s last election, millions of voters now routinely turn to generative AI systems like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude and others to answer questions, explain events, and offer advice. When asked about current affairs, chatbots draw on information retrieved from the internet and synthesize it into an answer delivered in an authoritative, ostensibly neutral voice — often without the user having a clear understanding of why particular sources were selected or what information shaped the response. The answers are also liable to contain plainly false information, delivered with the same confidence.Much as search engine optimization is used to game Google’s algorithm in a way that makes certain websites more prominent in search results, generative engine optimization, or GEO, is now being employed to shape the answers chatbots give by influencing what information AI systems rely on.Shwartz Altshuler said political campaigns are already exploring how to use GEO to their advantage, and predicted that it “will decide the elections.”The government is already getting in the GEO game, paying millions to sway American opinions on Israel. According to reports in US media in July, a contract with an American firm run by US President Donald Trump’s former campaign manager Brad Parscale “explicitly includes building websites designed to shape how chatbots answer questions,” said Hershkovitz.“That effort targets American audiences and the Gaza debate, not Israeli voters, but it proves the mechanism works and can be bought. Anything a government can purchase, a party with a media budget can purchase,” he added. The manipulation can be difficult to detect because the voter may encounter only the chatbot’s answer, with no indication that the information behind it was planted or distorted.“If someone has seeded that pool of retrievable material with distorted content, the model repeats the distortion as if it were an objective answer,” Hershkovitz said. “The fake image is a problem you can spot, but the poisoned retrieval layer is a problem you cannot, because it arrives dressed as a straight answer to a direct question.”Voter manipulation is only one potential form of AI-enabled election interference. Experts warned that the same technology could be used for voter suppression. With polls showing a neck-and-neck race between blocs backing Netanyahu and his chief rival Eisenkot, factions seeking an edge may find suppressing turnout among particular groups more consequential, and much easier, than persuading voters to cross Israel’s deeply entrenched political divides.Israel has already seen efforts to influence turnout without AI, including Likud’s deployment of hidden cameras at polling stations in Arab communities during the April 2019 election, which was seemingly intended to suppress Arab turnout.AI creates new ways of pursuing the same objective at vast scale.“Imagine that on election day I hear rumors that violence has broken out at polling booths and I ask the chatbot whether I should go out to vote or not. Its answer will affect my behavior — I’ll either stay home or go out and vote,” Shwartz Altshuler said. She pointed to disaffected Likud voters as a group whose votes — including whether to vote at all — could determine the election. A Channel 12 poll in May found that about 40% of those who voted Likud in the last election were considering another party. Their votes are being sought by parties both inside and outside Netanyahu’s bloc, including Eisenkot’s Yashar.“There are many Likud members who don’t want to vote for the party, but they don’t want to vote for anyone else. So what will they do? Stay home?” Shwartz Altshuler said. “That’s the question and this is where a chatbot can be very effective.”A perfect mark-The potential for those techniques to influence an election depends in part on the information environment in which they are deployed, and experts said several characteristics of Israel make it uniquely exposed.A 2026 Israel Internet Association survey found that 88% of Israeli adults use ChatGPT and 73% use Gemini, while 99% use WhatsApp. But that exceptionally high adoption of digital platforms is paradoxically matched by very low levels of digital and media literacy, experts say.“We have overconfidence in our ability to distinguish between what’s real and what isn’t because our digital literacy is low. We trust ourselves more than is justified,” said Shwartz Altshuler.Israel’s information ecosystem presents other vulnerabilities. Political information is sought in Hebrew, Arabic, Russian and English on fast-moving, contested issues. Hershkovitz warned that where reliable information in a particular language is sparse or difficult for chatbots to use, planted material may be retrieved simply because there is little other content there.Much of Israel’s political communication also runs through WhatsApp and Telegram, where messages can circulate within trusted private groups with little visibility to those trying to detect or correct false claims. AI makes it easier to produce campaign content tailored to those myriad and often highly influential groups.Yet perhaps the most significant weakness, experts said, is that it remains unclear who is responsible for defending against the broader information threat.Israel has institutions charged with protecting the mechanics of elections and has robust rules regulating the use of political advertising in mass media such as TV, radio and newspapers. However, those guardrails have failed to keep pace with the shift to digital media and social networks, allowing a campaigning free-for-all to take shape. Rather than implement tools or oversight mechanisms to deal with disinformation or root out nefarious actors, authorities have sought to tackle the issue by introducing rules requiring disclosure of AI-generated deepfakes in campaign materials, a guideline that largely avoids grappling with how campaign material is actually consumed.According to Asaf Wiener of the Israel Internet Association, Israel can demand much more transparency and accountability from tech companies that control these platforms. In the European Union, major social media platforms and search engines, including services operated by Meta, Google and TikTok, must report on their content-moderation practices. The largest must also assess and address risks to elections. Providers of AI models, including those behind chatbots such as ChatGPT and Gemini, face a separate set of transparency and risk-management requirements under the EU’s AI Act. Israel has no comparable overarching framework for these services. In Israel, said Wiener, “there is no regulation whatsoever on platforms, no accountability, even regarding illegal content.”Israel’s reluctance to impose more regulations stems at least in part from the country’s extraordinary dependence on its technology sector, a central engine of the country’s economy, making policymakers wary of measures perceived as burdening the industry.Israel has also faced pressure from Washington over proposed obligations on American companies. The result, Wiener argued, is that companies forced to devote substantial resources to safety, transparency and regulatory compliance elsewhere face considerably fewer demands in Israel.“We are becoming the backyard [playground] of global platforms,” he said.

Fatal mass casualty incident at Canadian military base sparks major fire, leaves dead and injured-Casualties ‘completely overwhelm’ hospitals in Edmonton; flames spread beyond Canadian Forces Base Wainwright; authorities say incident under investigation, no cause provided-By Rob Gillies 18 October 2026, 2:02 pm
EDMONTON, Canada (AP) — Canada’s defense minister said Saturday that people were killed and injured in an incident at a military base in Alberta that caused a major fire, while reports said that large numbers of injured people were being transported to hospitals.Fire crews scrambled late into the night as fierce winds whipped flames beyond Canadian Forces Base Wainwright and into the surrounding rural area.It was not immediately clear how many people were killed or injured, but a doctor at a hospital in the city of Edmonton, 180 km (120 miles) northwest, told Canada’s national broadcaster that patients were being brought to hospitals across the city as health care facilities around the base became “completely overwhelmed” by the number of people needing care.“This number of patients would overwhelm the city of Edmonton,” Dr. Warren Thirsk, an emergency department physician at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, told CBC News. “It is more patients than any of us want to count right now. It’s a disaster. It’s a one in every 15- to 25-year disaster.”The town of Wainwright, near the base, has about 7,000 residents.Defense Minister David McGuinty said the Royal Canadian Mounted Police were involved in investigating the incident and described the situation as “very, very active and delicate.” He said authorities were still working to determine what happened and expected to provide further information. An explosion and fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright east of Edmonton have resulted in an unknown number of fatalities and injuries, Federal Defence Minister David McGuinty says. Canadians mourning after fire kills 4 service members at CFB Wainwright-19 in critical condition as details emerge of blaze that began during training exercise-Kevin Maimann · CBC News · Posted: Oct 18, 2026 9:24 PM EDT |
Details of the tragic fire that killed four service members and injured dozens at a Canadian Armed Forces base in Wainwright, Alta., on Saturday are still emerging as people mourn across the country.Officials say 39 people were injured and taken to hospital, including 19 in critical condition, following a grass fire that broke out while soldiers were training at about 4 p.m. on Saturday. The four soldiers who were killed have been identified as: Sgt. Morgan Wong of Edmonton; Pte. Shaun Farrell of Prince Albert, Sask.; Pte. Aidan Goulding of North Vancouver; and Pte. Hayden Lykkemark of Langley, B.C.A news release from the Department of National Defence said Wong was from the Loyal Edmonton Regiment serving with the 3rd Battalion of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) in Edmonton. The other three soldiers were from the 3rd Battalion of PPCLI.Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke from Ottawa shortly after noon ET, when he confirmed that four service members died and dozens sustained serious injuries. He called the incident "one of the worst tragedies for the Forces on Canadian soil in peacetime."Sources had initially told CBC News that seven people had been killed in the fire.Carney said Canadian flags would fly at half-mast at federal buildings across the country.Multiple people were killed and hurt after a deadly fire at CFB Wainwright, a military base near Wainwright, Alta. Prime Minister Mark Carney said members of the Canadian Armed Forces were there to serve Canada — and now it's time for Canada to serve them."The nation is in mourning for those brave members of our Armed Forces whom we have lost," Carney said. The prime minister thanked first responders and community members who have stepped up to offer their help."Canadians come together in crisis, that is the best of our country," he said.'Uncommon, rapid' wind gusts-Maj.-Gen. Wade Rutland, commander of the 1st Canadian Division of the Canadian Armed Forces, said at a Sunday afternoon news conference that a fire broke out during a high-intensity combat training exercise using live munitions.Soldiers were throwing hand grenades on a grenade range at the time, he said, while others were in the section range doing a "section attack," where 10 soldiers attack a simulated enemy.Rutland said it's not yet known what exactly caused the fire. "Quite frankly, it could have been any of that or none of it," he said.A lethal fire broke out at CFB Wainwright in Alberta on Saturday. Authorities say four members of the Canadian Armed Forces were killed and dozens more injured.Rutland said heavy wind gusts spread the blaze by a kilometre in less than a minute."This was uncommon, rapid, and I certainly hadn't seen anything like it," he said, adding that conditions for most of the day were "within standard procedures to conduct training exercises" with wind gusts below 50 km/h.He told reporters that range control knew about the fire on the base for several hours, but it was decided that training "could carry on for a certain amount of time."4 dead, at least 19 in critical condition after deadly fire at CFB Wainwright in Alberta-Rutland said the fire swept quickly through to the area where the section attack was happening but noted the grenade range was not affected."I spoke to my commander last night, and he said within 30 seconds to a minute they saw no fire, and then there was a fire right on top of them."Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a wind warning on Saturday for large parts of Alberta, predicting wind gusts of up to 90 km/h.Pink flower bouquets laid on the ground-A cold front moved through Wainwright between 3 and 4 p.m., shifting winds from southwesterly to northwesterly, CBC meteorologist Johanna Wagstaffe reported, at speeds hitting 69 km/h by 4 p.m.In Edmonton, about 200 kilometres northwest, strong winds brought down trees and caused traffic signal outages on Saturday afternoon.Rutland said how or if the fire might have spread without being noticed by those on the ground will be part of an investigation, and he emphasized that the military has "very strict safety protocols" for training exercises.Flags flying at half mast in Manitoba after deadly fire at Alberta military base-Some witnesses said they heard explosions at the time of the fire, raising questions about whether oil and gas infrastructure at the site was hit, but Rutland said there is no indication that was the case. The Department of National Defence told CBC News earlier that there were no indications that what unfolded at CFB Wainwright was the result of "any terrorist activity."Rutland said he expects a full investigation into the fire to take at least a month.'Impossible-to-understand event-'Wainwright Mayor Bruce Pugh said his community is closely interconnected with the nearby Armed Forces base, which is among the largest in the country. He said the incident would be seared in Wainwright's memory and that of its first responders and health workers."This will be an incident where it's a heartbreaking, impossible-to-understand event, but it's being met with an equal reaction of humanity," he said.Multiple people have been hurt or killed after a fire at a military training area near Wainwright, Alta., on Saturday. Wainwright Mayor Bruce Pugh said the local hospital was acting as a triage centre, but that this is the largest mass casualty event the community has ever seen.Federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, whose Battle River–Crowfoot riding includes Wainwright, said he's heard stories highlighting the courage shown by Canadian Armed Forces members and first responders during and after the fire."There are acts of courage that are almost unimaginable," he said. "People who ran towards rather than away from the danger and are now paying a cruel price, fighting for their lives in hospitals.""Alberta's front-line heroes did not hesitate for a single second," Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said at Sunday's news conference. In an earlier social media post, Smith said that the "loss of life and injuries are heartbreaking."A fire truck seen with smoke in the distance-Acute Care Alberta activated a "code orange" response for 10 hours to co-ordinate provincewide resources across health sectors. The provincial health agency said Emergency Health Services Alberta deployed 30 units to Wainwright: 22 ground ambulances and eight aircraft. The response included support from service partners in Alberta and Saskatchewan.Patients were transported from the Wainwright Health Centre to two hospitals in Edmonton, one in Red Deer and one in Calgary.National Defence Minister David McGuinty said all levels of government have been co-ordinating in the response and lauded the actions of citizens, including Albertans who have stepped up to donate blood."Federal, provincial and local teams are working as one," McGuinty said. The entrance of a military base-Brandon Simmons, a witness who said he lives in the Wainwright hospital's long-term care facility, told CBC's Jessica Campbell that nurses dropped everything as soon as the code orange was called, grabbing stretchers and gurneys, "any sort of chair that they could, any sort of medical equipment. And they were running it down to the emergency, to the front entrance there."Simmons said he saw people with burns being unloaded from military vehicles."I heard people screaming inside of those vehicles," he said. "You know, that will never end up being out of my mind.... It was just a scene from a war movie."
Turkish-Israeli woman mobbed by protesters, called a ‘terrorist,’ at Istanbul mall-Foreign Ministry condemns confrontation with the dual national as ‘disgraceful and unacceptable’; activists accuse the woman of bringing Israeli soldiers to Turkey on vacation-By ToI Staff Today, 1:54 pm-OCT 19,26
A Turkish-born Israeli woman was accosted by anti-Israel activists at a shopping mall in Istanbul on Sunday, after her location was shared on social media. Protesters called her a “terrorist” and “child killer” and demanded that she leave the country, according to video of the incident.“Everyone, look here, there is a terrorist in Istanbul right now,” one of the activists shouted at the woman, identified as Claudia Medina Halfon.Another person shouted: “We don’t want Zionists in our country.”Videos circulating on social media showed a large group of people approaching Halfon, many with their mobile phones raised to document the confrontation. Others appeared to try and block her path through the mall.Security guards intervened and escorted her from the premises, while other personnel prevented protestors from following her down an escalator and attempted to defuse the situation. The Israel Foreign Ministry condemned the incident on Monday, calling it “disgraceful and unacceptable.”Turkey rolls out the red carpet for Hamas terrorists. Erdogan has likened Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Hitler, while the premier has called his Turkish counterpart an “antisemitic dictator” and condemned him for “committing genocide against the Kurds” while supporting the Hamas terror group. The confrontation on Sunday followed other incidents involving Israeli citizens in Turkey. In February, an Israeli woman was arrested for allegedly desecrating Turkey’s flag and insulting Erdogan and Palestine, according to Hebrew media reports. In a separate case that month, a Turkish-Israeli dual national was arrested while visiting her parents in Istanbul for serving in the IDF. She was held under house arrest for several days until diplomatic pressure secured her release and return to Israel. The woman was apprehended under a Turkish law that prohibits serving in a foreign military, according to Channel 12.Israel vehemently denies it has committed war crimes or genocide in Gaza, and says it seeks to minimize civilian fatalities, stressing that Hamas uses Gaza’s civilians as human shields, fighting from civilian areas, including homes, hospitals, schools and mosques.
Police arrest 10 suspects for West Bank settler attacks on journalist, EU diplomats-Rare police action against settlers follows days of international pressure over high-profile assaults; meanwhile, new attacks by Jewish extremists reported-By Emanuel Fabian and ToI Staff Today, 11:07 am-OCT 19,26
Israel announced the arrest of several suspected settler extremists on Monday morning, after days of international pressure to take action following weekend attacks on Palestinians, foreign diplomats and a photojournalist in the West Bank.At the same time, fresh incidents of settler violence were reported.Police said that 10 Israeli suspects were detained at dawn on suspicion of participating in the weekend attacks. The suspects were detained in several locations in the central West Bank.“Evidence linking them to the alleged acts was found in their possession, and several vehicles were seized,” police said.Settler activists said that one of the locations raided by the police was an illegal farming outpost close to the Ofra settlement. Several other outposts were also raided near the Shiloh settlement, 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) north of Ofra.Police said dozens of officers took part in the arrest operation, dubbed “Olive Leaf,” in reference to the violence during the Palestinian olive harvest. It was described as a joint effort with the Shin Bet security agency, with an IDF escort. The 10 suspects were detained “on suspicion of involvement in the violent incidents,” violating a closed military zone order issued by IDF Central Command chief Maj. Gen. Avi Bluth, “and illegal construction,” police said.Police sent out footage showing some of the arrests and displaying slingshots found in raided homes.Over the weekend, masked Israeli settlers launched several attacks on Palestinians harvesting olives. In one incident on Friday, settlers violently assaulted and injured Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine. On Saturday, European diplomats were attacked near the village of Taybeh. The US condemned the attack on the reporter, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio saying the administration was “very disturbed by those images and what we’re seeing” and expected Israeli action. The European Union said it expects “full accountability as well as effective measures to prevent continued acts of violence.”But Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cast doubt on both incidents, saying there were questions regarding what had occurred and that full investigations were needed.Police said that in accordance with the findings from their interrogation, the suspects would be brought before a court for a remand hearing. The right-wing Honenu legal aid group said it was representing the detainees.Police added that IDF and Border Police forces were also “conducting enforcement operations” to dismantle illegal settler outposts and to address violations of closed military zone orders issued by the army, as well as an “intrusion into a Palestinian home.”Settler violence against Palestinians has soared this year and spiked further in the weeks leading up to Israel’s October 27 election. Police action against the extremists is rare.Israel has faced growing international criticism over the surge in violence, which Netanyahu has downplayed as the work of a small number of delinquents. Critics accuse the government of condoning and even encouraging the violence, which has led to the displacement of dozens of Palestinian families. The IDF also faces mounting criticism for troops often standing by while attacks unfold, or actively participating.Few culprits have faced arrest or charges for assaults.Fresh attacks-New incidents of settler violence were reported on Sunday and early Monday. On Sunday night, the IDF said settlers had raided a Palestinian village in the West Bank, spraying graffiti on a building and setting fire to a storage container. The army said troops and police officers were dispatched to Wadi a-Rahim in the South Hebron Hills after a fire was identified near an illegal outpost in the area. “It later emerged that several Israeli civilians who entered the area of the village had sprayed graffiti and set fire to a container used as a storage shed,” the military said.Police officers arrived at the scene to investigate the attack. The army added that security forces had begun dismantling the illegal outpost. And on Monday morning, Palestinian media outlets reported that settlers had set fire to a vehicle overnight in the village of Beit Ummar, near Hebron in the southern West Bank, during a raid on the village. There were no reports of injuries.Nurit Yohanan, Jeremy Sharon, Lazar Berman and agencies contributed to this report.
Profits to go to 'Islamist' group that has defended Hamas-Anti-Israel activists accused of ‘hijacking’ UK’s Remembrance Day with ‘Palestine Poppy’
Various public figures slam pro-Palestinian version of national remembrance symbol, saying the initiative is disrespectful to war victims and ‘designed to divide rather than unite’By Michael Bachner Today, 9:16 am-OCT 19,26
A pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel initiative to sell a Palestinian-themed version of Britain’s national remembrance symbol has drawn outrage in the United Kingdom and accusations of politicizing next month’s Remembrance Day.Remembrance Day, marked on November 11, and November 8’s Remembrance Sunday commemorate the British Commonwealth’s fallen soldiers and veterans. Observed on Armistice Day — the anniversary of the end of World War I — the day is traditionally marked in Commonwealth countries by the remembrance poppy symbol — shaped like a red poppy flower — as a sign of remembrance and hope, inspired by the poppies that grew over the mired battlefields in Flanders after World War I.Pro-Palestinian activists have now designed an alternative “Palestine Poppy” wearable pin, resembling the traditional remembrance poppy but featuring the colors of the Palestinian flag.
They are being sold for £1.74 ($2.32) each, and promoted via a website that presents them as “a symbol of solidarity and remembrance for the ongoing struggle of the Palestinian people and their fight for justice.”The website adds that the badge is “in commemoration of the hundreds of thousands of innocent Palestinian men, women and children killed, and the millions displaced during the Gazan Genocide of 2023-2025,” and envisions it becoming “an anti-apartheid symbol.” Israel vehemently rejects both the “apartheid” and the “genocide” charges in the war against Hamas launched after the October 7 massacre. The website includes a video featuring the slogan “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” widely criticized as a call to eliminate the State of Israel. The profits from the “Palestine Poppy” sales are meant to go toward pro-Palestinian groups such as Friends of Al-Aqsa, a controversial nonprofit that has been accused by Britain’s Home Office as “far-Left and Islamist,” with its founder having defended Hamas as “no terrorist organization,” met its then-leader Ismail Haniyeh, and praised him as a “martyr” after he was killed in an Israeli strike. The group was banned last month from a Labour Party conference due to backlash.British media quoted various public figures condemning the initiative.“In effect it’s trying to hijack [or] ride on the coat-tails of the familiar red poppy,” army veteran, defense analyst and political commentator Lt. Gen. Stuart Crawford told GB News.“The Remembrance poppy is avowedly apolitical… and commemorates our war dead by bringing people together in the act of remembrance,” he said. “The so-called ‘Palestine Poppy’ is about as far away from remembrance as it’s possible to be. It is unashamedly political, designed to divide rather than unite.”Former Royal Navy officer Stuart Fawcett told the People’s Channel: “Now, we see them hijacking our national symbol of remembrance. Nothing is sacred to this mob that makes a pursuit of distorting the truth.”Shadow Defence Minister David Reed said: “The greatest disrespect we can show to those who sacrificed their lives for us is to turn their remembrance into a political battleground. The fallen deserve our gratitude, not our agendas. This must not go unchallenged. I will be making sure to tell anyone I see wearing this badge exactly what I think, and I implore others to do the same.”Reform UK party leader Nigel Farage said on X: “These people have no respect for our country.”The Royal British Legion, the organization that sells around 35 million paper poppies and badges every year, says the traditional red poppy is a “peace inclusive of all and importantly the red poppy raises funds to support our Armed Forces, veterans, and their families in their time of need.”A spokesperson for the charity told GB News: “People are free to choose to wear different poppies.”

Analysis-Will Trump’s endorsement boost Netanyahu’s chances of winning the election? Experts suggest US president’s remarks won’t sway either supporters or opponents of prime minister, though it might help deflect attention away from other current campaign issues-By Ruth Eglash Today, 1:32 am-OCT 19,26
JTA — Within minutes of US President Donald Trump endorsing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a post on Truth Social on Sunday, Netanyahu’s campaign team had released a 30-second clip showing all the times Trump has lavished praise on the Israeli leader over the past few years. With polls showing that Netanyahu and his governing coalition are slipping in their struggle to retain power in the upcoming October 27 election and lag behind the opposition bloc, an endorsement from the president of the United States is a powerful statement. But is it enough to tip the scales? “I don’t think it will change anything,” said Ilana Shpaizman, a senior lecturer in the Department of Political Studies at Bar-Ilan University.Of course, she said, “Netanyahu will say this is the proof that I’m a leader and all that, and I can speak to Trump… But so what? His followers already know that and they believe in him. They don’t need the endorsement.”Those who oppose him, Shpaizman continued, “know that Trump forced [Netanyahu] to accept the ceasefire in Gaza and accept the hostage deal, and that Trump runs the show around Iran. So they also don’t need the endorsement either,” Shpaizman said. Some pundits speaking on Israeli news outlets criticized Trump for “interfering” in Israel’s election, while others put it down to the fact that Trump does not want America to return to fighting Iran alone if Netanyahu, who is hawkish on Iran, is replaced by someone less willing to act militarily.“This is the first time ever that the president, at least publicly, endorses a candidate in Israel’s election,” Bushinsky, a political commentator and former adviser to Netanyahu, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.Bushinsky said he remembered Netanyahu complaining about US intervention in previous elections in 1999 and 2001, when presidents less enamored of him were in office. He even pushed for an initiative that would block foreign funding for election campaigns. Now, Bushinsky said, “I guess he is not complaining,” adding that the endorsement serves Netanyahu in two ways.First, it signals that Trump thinks that Netanyahu is the most suitable guy for the job. Second, it puts Netanyahu’s election campaign back on track, refocusing attention on an issue where Netanyahu is strong – Iran.“It lets him say ‘I can now finish a job, and I can finish a job with Trump,’ and ‘without Trump or without me, the job will not be finished,’” said Bushinsky.Bushinsky said that in the last few days, the political debate had pivoted to other issues such as Ashkenazim vs Sephardim, the draft law and the contentious efforts by the outgoing government to overhaul the judiciary.“This [endorsement] is the ultimate campaign boost for Netanyahu,” Bushinsky said. But that boost might not be enough. Most of the polls taken in recent days show the opposition bloc led by former IDF chief Gadi Eisenkot pulling ahead of Netanyahu’s ruling coalition, but give neither bloc enough seats to gain the necessary 61 of 120 seats in the Knesset to form the next government.“I think this might give Netanyahu one more seat, one more mandate, but not more than that,” said Bushinsky.Prof. Tamar Hermann, director of the Israel Democracy Institute’s Viterbi Center for Public Opinion and Policy Research, said that the timing of Trump’s support for Netanyahu in this election race had come both “too late and too early.”“It’s too late because people have already decided electoral preferences. They may shift within each bloc, but will not move between the blocs because of this,” she said. “And it’s too early because there are nine days to go to the elections, and we can already see other American leaders spilling some cold water over what he said, even on the Republican side of the aisle.”This criticism, Hermann continued, will be transmitted to Israeli voters, and they will see that Trump is facing a huge battle in the upcoming midterm elections.“The image of President Trump has deteriorated significantly since April 26, when he started the negotiations with Iran,” she said, pointing to one of the IDI’s recent public opinion surveys that found the president’s popularity had plummeted after he stopped the war with Iran without totally removing the threats against the State of Israel.According to that poll, the Israeli public’s confidence in Trump as someone dedicated to Israel’s security fell from around 70% to just 42%.“In my view, the endorsement will not make a big change,” Hermann added. “It will just strengthen Netanyahu’s political supporters, who will see it as a sign that he is still the internationally known figure that even the president of the United States is endorsing.”She concluded, “The meaning of endorsement in Israel is totally different than in the United States … we are not that used to this kind of move, and it will not make people change their minds.”Nearly 2,400 people arrested-Macron slams ‘unbridled’ riots in France, says ‘those who have destroyed must pay’
President blames ‘agitators from ultra-left groups,’ as Le Pen, far-right frontrunner in next year’s election, says incumbent is ‘running on fumes’; Trump: France ‘burning’ because of immigration By Agencies Today, 12:39 am-OCT 19,26
French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday slammed the “unbridled” violence that erupted in cost-of-living protests across France, as police battled protesters and looters in new clashes in Paris.Nearly 2,400 people were arrested Saturday in unrest that represented some of the worst urban violence in France in years, with almost 1,000 police and gendarmes injured, seven seriously, the interior ministry said.In an address to the nation, Macron said authorities would increase security and vowed lessons would be learned from the police response. But he stopped short of announcing drastic measures, such as a state of emergency or curfew.“Tonight, we all feel anger and shame,” Macron said, adding that there must be a distinction between protesters with “legitimate demands” and “those who destroyed, smashed, and looted.”“Those who have destroyed must pay,” he said, vowing the government would be “uncompromising” towards the “agitators from ultra-left fringe groups, joined by numerous delinquents,” who “unleashed unbridled violence in our cities.”AFP journalists said police Sunday fired tear gas and stun grenades at hundreds of people gathered in a Paris square, following social media calls for a gathering that authorities said had not been approved.Bottles and rocks were hurled at police, who made several arrests. Shops were also looted around the Place de la République square, with specialist anti-riot police deployed for the second day.Violence also erupted Sunday in the southeastern city of Lyon, where police thwarted youths who attempted to smash the windows of a luxury clothing store.A ‘lamentable’ address-The unrest came just months before a presidential election where the centrist Macron cannot run again and Marine Le Pen, the far-right presidential candidate for the National Rally party, is riding high in polls.Macron said France “deserves a fine presidential election,” marked by debates “with the parties, rather than in the streets with violence.”Le Pen said the troubles showed that Macron’s administration was “running on fumes, exhausted and disoriented.” Her top lieutenant Jordan Bardella described Macron’s speech as a “lamentable” address that showed the authorities had “nothing more to say” to France.Jean-Luc Melenchon, head of the hard-left France Unbowed party, also running for president, urged Macron to respond to the protesters’ demands, saying young people “need this episode to reach a positive conclusion.”Saturday’s protests had seen unions, the anti-Macron Yellow Vests movement that ruffled the early years of his presidency, and school students, who had protested for the last weeks, join forces in a show of anger at the cost of living and prospects for young people. With images of French town halls burning and shops being looted grabbing headlines around the world, US President Donald Trump waded into the debate, blaming immigration for the unrest.“France is burning! The immigration of people from an entirely different world, people with hatred in their hearts, has shattered that once great country,” Trump said in a social media post.‘All necessary lessons’Macron vowed that top officials would “make decisions in coordination with mayors to protect our cities, public buildings, and businesses.”“Seeing the streets of our cities ransacked in this way is unbearable,” he said, pledging “support” for businesses that suffered.Macron vowed there would be “full transparency” over the response by security forces to the protests, after criticism that police preparations had been inadequate. Some opposition politicians have already called for the sacking of Interior Minister Laurent Nunez.Macron said he had asked Nunez to “draw all necessary lessons,” particularly with regard to intelligence gathering and anticipation, adding he expected “clear answers.”Meanwhile, a massive clean-up operation began in cities from Lille in the north to Marseille in the south and Strasbourg in the east to Bordeaux in the southwest, where a masked mob invaded the residence of the local prefect. In Limoges, southwestern France, Mayor Guillaume Guerin denounced the chaos after the city’s 143-year-old town hall was set ablaze and largely destroyed in an arson attack on Saturday, drawing comparisons to the 2019 fire that devastated Paris’s Notre-Dame Cathedral.“There was a clear, premeditated intention to burn down the town hall, and the people inside feared for their lives,” Guerin told Reuters. He threatened to resign if the city did not receive the funds needed to repair the town hall.Bordeaux Mayor Thomas Cazenave said up to 100 stores had been looted in his city, while Marseille Mayor Benoit Payan announced emergency financial aid to support those businesses impacted by the violence.French retailer Carrefour’s CEO Alexandre Bompard told French broadcaster BFMTV that 50 of the company’s shops had been damaged, including 20 that were looted, with losses from the damage running into the tens of millions of euros.
