Livni: Some Palestinian prisoners to be freed in next two weeks

Justice minister says release will take place by next round of talks, to be held in Israel in second week of August

August 3, 2013, 9:22 am 1-The Times of Israel
Israel Radio reported Saturday morning that the talks are due to recommence on August 14.Livni also addressed the 9-month timetable for talks announced last week during the first round of negotiations in the US, telling the channel that the timeline was of less importance.“All the relevant sides have a vested interest in an agreement. If [the talks] are serious and we’re at the eighth month and we find that we need more time, then of course we will carry on talking. If after a month, we see it’s not serious, then why carry on talking for the next eight? “It is my impression that the Palestinians are serious — this is a test for them… Anybody who enters the [negotiating] room knows roughly how the talks should end.” said Livni.Last week, Israel approved the release of 104 Palestinian prisoners in order to facilitate the resumption of peace talks, a move that drew criticism from those on the right of the political spectrum, many of whom see the freeing of convicted murderers and terrorists as a price too high to pay for a return to the talks. Others regard it as a necessary evil, meeting a Palestinian demand to enable the resumption of negotiations.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that approving the releases was a deeply painful decision, but one that served the wider interests of the state. The parties held their first talks in three years in Washington last week, brokered by US Secretary of State John Kerry who traveled to the region no fewer than six times in recent months to get the sides to agree to a renewal of talks. On Thursday, President Barack Obama called Netanyahu and  Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to praise both leaders for their roles in the resumption of talks. He also reportedly urged them to “move fast” and make “speedy progress” toward a permanent accord. The US has indicated that it intends to remain involved and follow developments very closely. Last week, Kerry announced the appointment of former ambassador Martin Indyk to serve as US envoy for Mideast peace and the top American negotiator for the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.Ron Friedman contributed to this report.

Livni: Much Worse to Free Terrorists With a Gun to Your Head

Justice Minister says Israel won't release terrorists unless the PA shows it's serious about negotiating.

Justice Minister Tzipi Livni

Justice Minister Tzipi Livni responded on Friday to Israel’s decision this week to release terrorists as a gesture to the Palestinian Authority, saying that in her opinion, giving in to demands by terror groups that kidnapped a soldier by releasing prisoners was much worse.Speaking to Channel 10 News after meeting PA negotiator Saeb Erekat in Washington earlier this week, Livni said that the 104 terrorists Israel agreed to free would be released in small groups and only if the PA shows that it is serious during the negotiations.
“The bereaved families feel this conflict in the most painful way," she said, "but to me, releasing such terrorists when there is a gun pointed at our heads in exchange for a soldier or for dead bodies, is much worse from a national perspective."Livni added that the release of the terrorists is meant to "generate hope for the children of those who paid the price [of the conflict]," and claimed that it will happen “in small groups and and only if the negotiations will be serious.""All the parties involved have an interest in reaching a settlement," she said and, referring to U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry’s announcement that the negotiations will continue for nine months, added, “Time is less important. If we require more than nine months, of course we’ll continue, and if the negotiations will not be serious - then even nine months will not necessary. My impression is that the Palestinians are serious, this is a test for them. Anyone who enters the negotiating room knows more or less how it should end.”Livni claimed that PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas had toned down his previous preconditions before this round of talks, saying, "Abbas’s demands just four months ago were much more stringent. He wanted a map based on the [pre-]1967 borders that is approved and signed by the Israeli government, a complete freeze of settlement construction and release of prisoners. We tried to produce a package that does not include things that Israel could never give.”Livni admitted that "For me, a construction freeze is not something problematic. It is our duty to keep the ‘settlement blocs’ as part of Israel, and I see no point in further building."She stressed that negotiations could not have happened without Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s decision to restart talks. Finally, referring to the referendum law which passed its first Knesset reading this week, Livni said, "I objected but the law has been enacted. We’ll accept the decision of the people.”(Arutz Sheva’s North American Desk is keeping you updated until the start of Shabbat in New York. Archaeologists’ Shock Claim: A Piece of Jesus Christ’s Crucifixion Cross Was Potentially Found

The Blaze
Biblical archaeology offers a fascinating lens into the lives of key individuals living during Old and New Testament times. Of late, numerous items have been discovered that are heralded as offering important context to the holy book's contents. The latest find comes from archaeologists working in Turkey who believe they may have have uncovered the most fascinating relic yet -- a piece of Jesus Christ's cross.
Did Archaeologists Just Discover a Piece of Jesus Christs Crucifixion Cross?

This particular item, found in a stone chest, was uncovered in the ruins of Balatlar Church in Sinop, Turkey, LiveScience reported. The container, found at the house of worship that was constructed in A.D. 660, is described as housing "a piece of a cross.""We have found a holy thing in a chest. It is a piece of a cross, and we think it was [part of the cross on which Jesus was crucified]," lead excavator Professor Gülgün Köro?lu told Hurriyet Daily News. "This stone chest is very important to us. It has a history and is the most important artifact we have unearthed so far."NBC has more about the fascinating discovery:Köro?l is a art historian and an archaeologist at the Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts in Turkey. She said that the chest that was found is a symbolic coffin -- one that houses the relics of a person who was revered as "holy" (in this case, Jesus or a saint). The items within the chest, described by NBC as "fragments," are said to be associated with Christ's crucifixion. The chest was transported to a lab, where it will be examined further. The educator and her team have been working at the site since 2009.The claim that this is a portion of Christ's cross is of course controversial and will likely be debated. This isn't the first time that scientists and archaeologists have claimed to possibly possess a piece of the coveted wooden cross on which the Christian savior was crucified. This is the latest in a slew of Bible-era finds (read more about these archeological discoveries).

Has the Bible’s Garden of Eden Been Found — and Restored?

The Blaze
Has the Bible's Garden of Eden been found -- and restored? This question can't be answered definitely, but it's certainly worth exploring, especially in light of the ongoing news surrounding the first Iraqi national park.
The world's most well-known garden is described in the Old Testament as a place of perfection -- one in which God is said to have placed Adam and Eve. For those who believe in its literal existence, Eden has been a focus of debate, particularly surrounding where it was located. Now, despite ongoing violence in the region, NewScientist is reporting that the "'Garden of Eden' has been saved." The country's Council of Ministers recently approved its first national park, restoring Mesopotamian marshes in Iraqi's southern region. The name of the new park, according to Nature of Iraq, the group that advocated for its creation, is the Central Marshes of Iraq. NewScientist continues:
This vast wetland of reed beds and waterways, home of the Ma'dan Marsh Arabs, is widely held to be the home of the Biblical story of the Garden of Eden, the paradise where Adam and Eve were created and from which they were subsequently expelled.
After the Gulf war in 1991, Iraq's president, Saddam Hussain, used dykes, sluices and diversions to cut off the country's two major rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates. This drained 93 per cent of the marshes, largely obliterating the largest wetland ecosystem in the Middle East
Earlier this year, The New York Times, too, reported that Bible scholars consider this land to be where the Garden of Eden once stood.Certainly, no one can be sure the area really is the Biblical home of Adam and Eve, but there is one profound fact worth noting. Despite the marsh's disappearance for years, all 278 species that were recorded on the land survived, finding the few spots that had water and sustaining themselves there.Miracle or simply nature's resiliency at work (or both)? You decide. Not all of the land came back to vibrancy, though, as surrounding nations like Syria, Iran and Turkey are still restricting water from the Tigris and Euphrates, NewScientist reports."With this action, Iraq has acted to preserve the cradle of civilization," said Azzam Alwash, founder and President of the Board of Directors of Nature Iraq. "It is now the duty of the world to help Iraq maintain these wetlands for the future generations by helping Iraq, Turkey, Syria and Iran to reach an equitable agreement on the sharing of the waters in the basin of the Tigris and Euphrates."Nature Iraq also said that international agreement over water supplies will be essential to ensuring that the marsh comes fully back to life. And the hope is that, one day, tourism will help fuel the money needed to sustain it.

Genesis 2:8-9 gives an account of what the Garden of Eden was like. It was supposedly a picture of perfection, as it  had all that mankind would need to survive."Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed," the Bible reads. "Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground -- trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil."(H/T: Big Think)
