A senior Palestinian source warned Thursday that security coordination between Israel and the Palestinian Authority is on the verge of collapse. The source, in a conversation with the Times of Israel, said that recent, “dangerous” developments on the ground — notably the killing of two Palestinians in Nakba Day demonstrations earlier in the day – has already led to heavy pressure on the Palestinian leadership to immediately sever ties with Israel’s security apparatuses.The source said that there was coordination between the two sides ahead of the Thursday demonstrations, but that wasn’t enough to prevent the fatalities. He added that during discussions with Israeli defense officials in the wake of the incident, the PA was assured that an investigation would be launched into what caused the fatalities and whether soldiers had fired live ammunition.But even if they didn’t die of live fire, the source said, Fatah and other organizations were demanding that Palestinian defense officials cease coordination with Israel.“We don’t want an escalation,” he said, “but understand that the situation on the ground is in the brink of exploding.“We can act to calm the [people’s] sentiments, but it only takes one bullet to raise these feelings again,” he continued, noting that the PA has been organizing meetings to address continued security coordination with Israel.“We aren’t the South Lebanese Army,” he said, a reference to the militia group Israel once used as a proxy in southern Lebanon against the PLO and Hezbollah. “You must do something here in order to stabilize the situation. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met on Thursday with Israel's chief peace negotiator, Justice Minister Tzipi Livni in London, AFP reported.Officials in Washington emphasized the surprise meeting happened because Kerry and Livni both happened to be in London at the same time and was not indicative of new developments in the stalled peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA).The meeting, according to the State Department, "it provided an opportunity for them to catch up since the pause in the negotiations."According to AFP, Kerry voiced concern after two Palestinian Arabs were shot dead by Israeli forces Thursday during a violent protest on “Nakba Day”, commemorating what the Arabs view as the "catastrophe" of Israel's establishment. The Vatican reported on Thursday that he will ride in open-top non-bulletproof cars in Bethlehem.The pope's predecessor, Benedict XVI, rode in a bulletproof "popemobile," an armored car introduced after the attempted assassination of John Paul II in 1981. "A new missile launch site 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the city of Shahrud was identified in August 2013. Arch-terrorist Marwan Barghouti, who is serving five life sentences in an Israeli prison for his role in planning suicide terror attacks, has welcomed the Hamas-Fatah unity pact and stressed that there can never be a peace agreement with Israel unless the “Palestinian refugees” are allowed to return to their homes.Barghouti’s remarks were made in a statement he released Thursday on the occasion of “Nakba Day”, on which Arabs mark what they see as the “catastrophe” of Israel’s establishment.In his statement, Barghouti praised the work of the “martyrs”, stressing that the so-called “right of return” is a sacred right that cannot be negotiated. He added that any solution to the “Palestinian problem” which does not include the right of return is an illegitimate solution.He expressed support for a “comprehensive national strategy” for dealing with the major challenges is facing the Palestinian people, including “the occupation, the settlements, and the Judaization of Jerusalem and the holy places of Islam and Christianity.”Barghouti also expressed support for the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) unilateral moves in the United Nations and encouraged PA leadership to join more international organizations. He also called for sanctions against Israel and for its political and economic isolation, similar to the steps that were taken against South Africa during the apartheid era.Barghouti is widely perceived as a popular choice to replace PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, whose term in office expired several years ago.From his jail cell, he has threatened Israel in the past with a third intifada, albeit an unarmed one, and has declared he “would not give up and I claim that the right of return is a sacred right of the Palestinians.”He recently accused the PA of neglecting the issue of terrorist releases and called for all Palestinian Arab terrorist groups to put his release on the top of the agenda.

A senior Palestinian source warned Thursday that security coordination between Israel and the Palestinian Authority is on the verge of collapse. The source, in a conversation with the Times of Israel, said that recent, “dangerous” developments on the ground — notably the killing of two Palestinians in Nakba Day demonstrations earlier in the day – has already led to heavy pressure on the Palestinian leadership to immediately sever ties with Israel’s security apparatuses.The source said that there was coordination between the two sides ahead of the Thursday demonstrations, but that wasn’t enough to prevent the fatalities. He added that during discussions with Israeli defense officials in the wake of the incident, the PA was assured that an investigation would be launched into what caused the fatalities and whether soldiers had fired live ammunition.But even if they didn’t die of live fire, the source said, Fatah and other organizations were demanding that Palestinian defense officials cease coordination with Israel.“We don’t want an escalation,” he said, “but understand that the situation on the ground is in the brink of exploding.“We can act to calm the [people’s] sentiments, but it only takes one bullet to raise these feelings again,” he continued, noting that the PA has been organizing meetings to address continued security coordination with Israel.“We aren’t the South Lebanese Army,” he said, a reference to the militia group Israel once used as a proxy in southern Lebanon against the PLO and Hezbollah. “You must do something here in order to stabilize the situation. [There is] ongoing construction in the settlements, a refusal to freeze construction, and continued mistreatment of Palestinians.“There is now a hunger strike among the prisoners and the whole situation is very volatile,” he said. “We say to you, if conditions continue like this, we will pass over to you the mechanisms [of control] and you will have to deal with the situation.”The source also spoke to the subject of stalled peace talks, saying there were phone calls between members of the Palestinian and Israeli negotiating teams, to no avail.“The Israelis did not bring any new or different ideas,” he said, adding that during a meeting Wednesday in London between US Secretary of State John Kerry and PA President Mahmoud Abbas, it was revealed for the first time that Israel is unwilling to release 30 long-serving prisoners, and is not ready to implement a construction freeze in the settlements.“In front of us there are difficult, grave decisions, and none of them are simple ones,” he said.Sources in the IDF and defense establishment refused to comment directly on the situation, although they warned that stopping security cooperation could damage the Palestinian side and the economic situation of West Bank residents. Construction and Housing Minister Uri Ariel toured Jerusalem construction sites alongside Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat on Thursday, and noted that over 4,000 new apartments were being built at this moment in Israel's capital city."In order to lower the prices of housing in Jerusalem,” he explained, “building must be carried out in it, as must marketing and the issuing of building permits."Jerusalem is the capital of the state of Israel, and frezing construction in it is unthinkable,” he stressed. “I will continue to prepare building and marketing plans in Jerusalem, just like all the rest of Israel.”Barkat noted that 2013 had been a record year for the number of residential units whose construction had begun, and also in the number whose construction had been completed. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met on Thursday with Israel's chief peace negotiator, Justice Minister Tzipi Livni in London, AFP reported.Officials in Washington emphasized the surprise meeting happened because Kerry and Livni both happened to be in London at the same time and was not indicative of new developments in the stalled peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA).The meeting, according to the State Department, "it provided an opportunity for them to catch up since the pause in the negotiations."According to AFP, Kerry voiced concern after two Palestinian Arabs were shot dead by Israeli forces Thursday during a violent protest on “Nakba Day”, commemorating what the Arabs view as the "catastrophe" of Israel's establishment. Kerry "again urges both sides to refrain from unhelpful steps," a senior State Department official said in a statement quoted by the news agency."He is concerned about the violent incident that took place today outside the Ofer prison and calls upon both sides to exercise maximum restraint."Kerry’s meeting with Livni came one day after he met PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas in London for what was described as “informal talks”.Kerry gave Livni the same message as he had stressed to Abbas - that the fate of the talks lies in the hands of Israel and the PA."While the door remains open to peace, the parties must determine whether they are willing to take the steps necessary to resume negotiations," an official told AFP.Kerry had also reiterated to Abbas on Wednesday that any new government must recognize Israel and commit to non-violence.British Foreign Secretary William Hague later tweeted to confirm he had also met with Livni for talks on the peace process, urging that the "opportunity for peace must be seized".Israel pulled out of the talks a few weeks ago in response to a Hamas-Fatah unity agreement, which would see the Hamas terrorist group forming a unity government with Abbas’s movement.

Pope Francis apparently feels very at ease over his visit to Palestinian Authority (PA) controlled areas during his May 24-26 visit to Israel. The Vatican reported on Thursday that he will ride in open-top non-bulletproof cars in Bethlehem.The pope's predecessor, Benedict XVI, rode in a bulletproof "popemobile," an armored car introduced after the attempted assassination of John Paul II in 1981. The current pope has in the past shown his preference for non-bulletproof cars."It's a program that he (the pope) himself has approved," Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi told AFP.Some may doubt Francis's decision, given the animosity towards Christians in Bethlehem which was on display last week, as Christian Arab residents of a village near the city were savagely attacked by local Muslims with stones as they celebrated a Christian holiday at Saint George’s Monastery. Indeed, most Christians have reportedly been driven out of the city by Muslims.A possible indicator to the pope's feeling of ease may be found in reports from February by Rabbi Sergio Bergman, a member of the Argentinian parliament and close friend of Pope Francis, who said that the pope intends to define himself as the "Che Guevera of the Palestinians" and support their "struggle and rights" during his visit.PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas last December called on the pope to use his visit as a propaganda move for the PA against Israel. That same month the pope announced he would not host "mass" prayer services in Jerusalem during his trip, but instead in PA-controlled Bethlehem as a show of support. Despite apparently reducing illicit purchases that breach UN sanctions, Iran is pursuing development of ballistic missiles, according to a confidential UN report obtained by the Reuters news agency on Thursday.A ban on developing missiles suited to carrying a nuclear warhead is included in a 2010 Security Council resolution imposed on Iran for defying council demands that it suspend uranium enrichment and other nuclear activities of potential use in bomb-making.The new report by the UN Panel of Experts, according to Reuters, said that Iran's overall attempts to illicitly procure materials for its banned nuclear and missile programs appear to have slowed down as it pursues negotiations with world powers that it hopes will bring an end to sanctions.At the same time, the report makes clear that, apart from holding off on test-firing one type of rocket, Iran shows no sign of putting the brakes on the expansion of its missile program."Iran is continuing development of its ballistic missile and space programs," the experts said, according to Reuters. "A new missile launch site 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the city of Shahrud was identified in August 2013. A larger launch complex is assessed to be close to completion at the Imam Khomeini Space Center at Semnan for ballistic missiles and satellite launch vehicles."The report also cited what it described as the June 2013 opening of the Imam Sadeq Observation and Monitoring Center for monitoring space objects, including satellites.The report comes as Iran and six world powers continue to hold talks in an attempt to reach a permanent nuclear deal, a follow-up to an interim deal reached between the sides in November.The sides met again this week, and a senior U.S. official later cautioned against excessive optimism, yet said disputes could be overcome and a deal reached by a July 20 deadline Daryl Kimball of the Arms Control Association, a Washington-based research and advocacy group, told Reuters that missiles should not become a deal-breaker."The best way to address Iran's potential to exploit nuclear-capable missiles is to ensure that Iran's nuclear program is sufficiently limited and transparent," he said."To seek Iran-specific limits on conventional weapons that Iran regards as vital to its self-defense would jeopardize the negotiations' key objective."An Iranian official confirmed that the ballistic missile program would not be interrupted. "Iran purchases parts from various countries, including Russia and China and then assembles missiles in Iran," he said.Another report by the UN panel which was exposed last week highlighted Iran's methods of evading the sanctions that were imposed on it.That report showed that these methods range from concealing titanium tubes inside steel pipes to using its petrochemical industry as a cover to obtain items for a heavy-water nuclear reactor.In 2012, it was revealed that Iranian ships were using other countries’ flags in an attempt to evade Western sanctions against the country.Last year, the United States said that Iran was trying to obtain high-tech materials linked to their nuclear programs, in violation of UN sanctions.
