The IDF and the US military cooperated Sunday in a large drill simulating a multi-front missile attack on Israel by Gaza, Lebanon, Syria and Iran, Channel 2 reported Sunday.During the exercise, about 1,000 American soldiers stationed in Israel joined more than 4,000 Israelis, to practice the protection of the State of Israel in a series of scenarios that simulate the firing of rockets and missiles from several arenas simultaneously: Gaza , Lebanon, Syria and Iran.The exercise reportedly tested various scenarios, including one in which the U.S. sent Patriot missiles to Israel and some Aegis-type ships, which carry rockets and other defense systems against ballistic missiles, meant to assist Israel in protecting its population and territory.The drill also rehearsed particularly complex scenarios in which missiles and rockets are fired in large quantities from many different arenas. Israel is rehearsing the use of its Arrow missiles, as well as Patriots, the Iron Dome and Magic Wand systems – the last of which is still in development. He was hospitalized. Several then started throwing stones at the church. 7 or 8 Christians were injured and some physical damage was done – broken windows etc. The police didn’t show up for an hour.”Ever since the Oslo Accords handed over control of large parts of Judea and Samaria to the Muslim Palestinian Authority, Christians in Bethlehem have been suffering persecution and their population has drastically dwindled.Justus Reid Weiner of Hebrew University has reported that Bethlehem's Christians have been suffering "many examples of intimidation, beatings, land theft, firebombing of churches and other Christian institutions, denial of employment, economic boycotts, torture, kidnapping, forced marriage, sexual harassment, and extortion."PA officials are reportedly directly responsible for many of the attacks, and some Muslims who have converted to Christianity have been murdered. The Muslim Fatah-controlled authority in Judea and Samaria is encouraging a "sharp demographic shift" in Bethlehem, where the Christian population went from a 60 percent majority in 1990 to a 40 percent minority in 2000, to about 15 percent of the city's total population today, according to Weiner.

The government has officially informed the Knesset that there will be no change in the status quo at David's Tomb in Jerusalem.Members of the Knesset's Internal Affairs and Environment Committee received a missive Sunday from the committee chair, MK Miri Regev (Likud-Beytenu), which included a copy of a letter she received from Minister of Public Security Yitzchak Aharonovich."According to an update that I received from the Foreign Ministry and the Prime Minister's Office, there is no intention to change the existing status quo at the the David's Tomb Compound and the Last Supper Hall, and this is also true as regards prayer times and everything that involves,” wrote Aharonovich."There is no intention of handing over any part of the said compound to the Vatican,” he added.Aharonovich tied between the reports regarding plans to make concessions to the Vatican, and the upcoming visit to Israel by Pope Francis. He asked Regev to postpone the committee's discussion of the subject, which was planned for Monday, to a later date, since such a debate might stir up “radical elements that seek mostly to disrupt and interfere with the visit” by the pope. Israel's top police officer on Sunday vowed to step up police presence nationwide ahead of Pope Francis's upcoming visit, according to AFP."You cannot exaggerate the importance of this visit on both a national and an international level," Police Commissioner Yohanan Danino told reporters in Jerusalem.The two-day papal visit to Israel, which begins on May 25, was being treated by police with the same level of importance as that of US President Barack Obama, with an extra 8,000 officers to be deployed throughout Jerusalem, he said.Danino also responded to the Vatican's repeated concerns over "price tag" vandalism on Christian sites ahead of the visit, vowing to apprehend "extreme elements." A report by CAMERA, an organization which monitors anti-Israel bias in the media, reported that Christians attempting to enter Saint George’s Monastery in the village were intimidated and attacked with rocks and stones.Author Lela Gilbert, author of Saturday People, Sunday People: Israel through the Eyes of a Christian Sojourner, filed a report with CAMERA over the incident.“Some local Muslims either tried to park a car too close the church and/or tried to enter the church during a service honoring St. George – the initial instigation isn’t clear,” she wrote. “But when the intruders were asked to leave, one of them stabbed a Christian man who was outside the church serving as a guard. He was hospitalized. Several then started throwing stones at the church. 7 or 8 Christians were injured and some physical damage was done – broken windows etc. The police didn’t show up for an hour.”Ever since the Oslo Accords handed over control of large parts of Judea and Samaria to the Muslim Palestinian Authority, Christians in Bethlehem have been suffering persecution and their population has drastically dwindled.Justus Reid Weiner of Hebrew University has reported that Bethlehem's Christians have been suffering "many examples of intimidation, beatings, land theft, firebombing of churches and other Christian institutions, denial of employment, economic boycotts, torture, kidnapping, forced marriage, sexual harassment, and extortion."PA officials are reportedly directly responsible for many of the attacks, and some Muslims who have converted to Christianity have been murdered. The Muslim Fatah-controlled authority in Judea and Samaria is encouraging a "sharp demographic shift" in Bethlehem, where the Christian population went from a 60 percent majority in 1990 to a 40 percent minority in 2000, to about 15 percent of the city's total population today, according to Weiner.

The government has officially informed the Knesset that there will be no change in the status quo at David's Tomb in Jerusalem.Members of the Knesset's Internal Affairs and Environment Committee received a missive Sunday from the committee chair, MK Miri Regev (Likud-Beytenu), which included a copy of a letter she received from Minister of Public Security Yitzchak Aharonovich."According to an update that I received from the Foreign Ministry and the Prime Minister's Office, there is no intention to change the existing status quo at the the David's Tomb Compound and the Last Supper Hall, and this is also true as regards prayer times and everything that involves,” wrote Aharonovich."There is no intention of handing over any part of the said compound to the Vatican,” he added.Aharonovich tied between the reports regarding plans to make concessions to the Vatican, and the upcoming visit to Israel by Pope Francis. He asked Regev to postpone the committee's discussion of the subject, which was planned for Monday, to a later date, since such a debate might stir up “radical elements that seek mostly to disrupt and interfere with the visit” by the pope. Regev complied and announced that the session has been cancelled.Arutz Sheva recently reported plans to dramatically increase the number of days on which Christian servicesd are held at the compound – from one day per year to 60.Earlier reports that parts of the compound would be handed over to the Vatican were denied by the Chief Sephardic Rabbi and Israel's Ambassador to the Vatican.

Israel's top police officer on Sunday vowed to step up police presence nationwide ahead of Pope Francis's upcoming visit, according to AFP."You cannot exaggerate the importance of this visit on both a national and an international level," Police Commissioner Yohanan Danino told reporters in Jerusalem.The two-day papal visit to Israel, which begins on May 25, was being treated by police with the same level of importance as that of US President Barack Obama, with an extra 8,000 officers to be deployed throughout Jerusalem, he said.Danino also responded to the Vatican's repeated concerns over "price tag" vandalism on Christian sites ahead of the visit, vowing to apprehend "extreme elements." "All sorts of extreme elements... are trying to create pressure and the impression of pressure. We are rejecting this pressure and we won't let them succeed," he said. "We will do everything to ensure they won't harm Christian holy places... and to ensure the trip goes successfully."The papacy has been up in arms over 'price tag' attacks, a euphemism for politically-motivated vandalism and criminal damage usually attributed to Jewish extremists, carried out either in revenge for Arab terrorist attacks, or in protest of Israeli government policies such as the destruction of Jewish homes in Judea and Samaria. The Vatican has expressed heightened concern over several attacks on Christian sites in Israel over the past several weeks, a phenomenon which critics note has been heavily hyped by Israel's left-leaning media. "The bishops are very concerned about the lack of security and lack of responsiveness from the political sector, and fear an escalation of violence," it said in a statement earlier this month, noting there had been "no gesture of solidarity or condemnation" from Israel's political establishment. "We feel neither safe nor protected."It is not known if the Patriarchate has issued any kind of statement regarding the persecution of Christians in the areas administered by the Palestinian Authority (PA)in Judea and Samaria.The Vatican seems to be dismissing threats against Christian co-existence in the PA, however - as Pope Francis is due to ride through Bethlehem and other dangerous areas in an open, unarmed convoy.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is consideing providing “quiet” support for Silvan Shalom in the race for president. According to Ha'aretz, Netanyahu will thus secure the support of 11 members of Yisrael Beiteinu, who in the past agreed to support whomever Netanyahu supported.The term of President Shimon Peres is up this summer, and under new rules instituted recently a president can serve one seven-year term only. No candidates have officially announced their intention to run, although several names, including Shalom and Nobel Prize winner Professor Dan Schectman, are known to be very interested in the job.A senior Likud official said that “Netanyahu has the ability to 'deliver' Avigdor Lieberman and his MKs. That is all the support Shalom needs, as the Likud MKs will naturally vote for him. Netanyahu is now deciding whether or not to voice public support for Shalom or to keep his support passive. Some people are of the opinion that public support may actually damage Shalom's chances."Shalom's wife, Judy Shalom Nir Mozes, wrote on her Facebook page Sunday that her husband had decided to run for the office. “My husband would make the most worthy candidate,” she said, “He does not have a smidgen of corruption about him.”

The Jewish Home party on Saturday night launched a scathing attack against Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, in the wake of her meeting in London with Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas.“Tzipi Livni has long ago lost contact with the Israeli electorate, and with her latest meetings she finally turned into a satellite that has lost all contact with the Earth,” the party said in a statement.“Tzipi Livni voted in favor of the cessation of the contacts with the Hamas-Fatah alliance, then flew to London to violate that same decision. If it's hard for her to accept the decisions of the government, the door for her to leave is open.”Earlier Saturday, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu distanced himself from the meeting between Livni and Abbas, which was held on Thursday.Sources in the prime minister's office said that Netanyahu made it clear to Livni that she would be representing only herself, and not the Israeli government.The prime minister reiterated that the position of the government, as passed unanimously by the security cabinet, is not to negotiate with a Palestinian government that includes Hamas, which he restated is "a terrorist organization that declares its intentions to destroy the state of Israel."Livni had also met with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry earlier on Thursday, in what was described as a chance encounter given that both were in London at the same time, and not a planned attempt to restart the peace talks.Kerry’s meeting with Livni came one day after he met PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas in London for what was described as “informal talks”.Despite the talks breaking down, Kerry has always remained optimistic that they will restart. His spokeswoman has denied that Kerry’s efforts to secure a peace treaty had failed, saying instead that the talks are in a “moment of transition”.
