Hezbollah leader: Israel killed Kuntar, we will avenge his death-Nasrallah says terrorist ‘only wanted to fight Israel,’ warns group will act ‘at the time and place of our choosing’-By Times of Israel staff and AFP December 21, 2015, 9:52 pm
Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah vowed in a televised address Monday evening that his Lebanon-based Shiite terror group would respond to the killing of notorious operative Samir Kuntar, which it blamed on Israel.“We reserve the right to respond to this assassination at the time and place of our choosing. We in Hezbollah will exercise that right,” he said in his address from Beirut.Hezbollah has said Kuntar, who spent nearly three decades in an Israeli prison for his part in the brutal 1979 murders of a Nahariya family, was killed along with eight others in an overnight Saturday airstrike on a residential building in Jaramana, on the outskirts of the Syrian capital of Damascus.“I hold Israel responsible for the assassination of Kuntar,” Nasrallah said.Nasrallah recalled the first time he met Kuntar after he was released from prison in Israel.“ Kuntar told me the first day we met, ‘I left Palestine to return to Palestine,'” he said. “Kuntar refused to take any political or public responsibilities, he only wanted to fight Israel.”The Hezbollah leader accused Israel of firing guided missiles at the building where Kuntar was living. He dismissed some Syrian reports to the effect that it wasn’t Israel, but rather rebels, who killed Kuntar.“We have no doubt that the Israeli enemy was behind the assassination in a blatant military operation,” he said, according to the Naharnet news site. Nasrallah also praised the Palestinian youths who have been involved in the current wave of terror attacks against Israel, and noted admiringly that Kuntar was only a teenager himself when he carried out his most notorious attack, in which he smashed in the head of an Israeli child.Earlier in the day, during Kuntar’s funeral in a Hezbollah stronghold south of the capital Beirut, the terror group’s Executive Assembly chief Hashim Safi Al Din threatened revenge against Israel for the slaying.“If the Israeli thinks he settled the score with Kuntar’s assassination, then he is wrong,” Al Din said. “He knows he only set new scores. If Israel hasn’t learned from all of its failed attempts to assassinate senior commanders, then it ought to know it committed a new stupid act by assassinating Kuntar.”Israel has not confirmed that it was behind the attack, although officials have expressed satisfaction over Kuntar’s death. There have also been Israeli reports that Kuntar was planning fresh terror attacks against Israel.A Lebanese Druze, Kuntar took part in the 1979 raid from Lebanon in which he helped kidnap members of the Haran family from Nahariya. The family’s four- year-old daughter, Einat, was killed when Kuntar smashed her head with his rifle butt. Three others, including her father, Danny, were also murdered in the attack. Kuntar was 16 at the time, and a member of the Palestine Liberation Front.Kuntar spent 29 years in an Israeli prison before being traded to Hezbollah in 2008 in exchange for the bodies of abducted Israel Defense Forces soldiers Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser. Following his release, he took on a senior role in the group, was honored by then-Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and by Syrian President Bashar Assad, and helped to organize Syrian Druze on the Golan Heights and elsewhere into terror cells charged with carrying out attacks against Israel.
Cops arrest East Jerusalem girl caught with knife for second time-15-year-old was detained two weeks ago, but released when she claimed the blade was for home use, police say-By Judah Ari Gross December 21, 2015, 10:30 pm-the times of israel
Police officers in the Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem Old City on Monday arrested an East Jerusalem teenage girl found in possession of a knife, on suspicion she was planning to carry out a stabbing attack. This was the second time in two weeks the 15-year-old had been detained for carrying a knife, the police said in a statement. The teenager “raised the suspicions” of police officers in the Jewish Quarter, who called for her to halt. The police initially reported that the knife had been found in the 15-year-old’s purse, but later clarified that it had, in fact, been hidden in her sleeve. As a result, they brought the teen in for questioning. When officers checked the girl’s information, they found that she had been arrested two weeks before, under the same suspicion. The girl, who was not named, was released a few days after her first arrest, when she claimed the knife in her bag was purchased for use in her family’s home. However, police now believe that she was preparing to attack Jewish Israelis.“The way she took out the knife today — and other pieces of information that have been collected — increase the suspicion, and it appears as though the officers prevented the injury of innocent civilians today, thanks to their awareness and sensitivity to aberrations,” the Israel Police said in a statement Monday evening.Jerusalem’s Old City has been a frequent site of stabbing attacks in the ongoing cycle of violence, with many attacks taking place at Damascus Gate.
With Iraqi troops advancing, IS holds civilians captive in stronghold-Army jets drop leaflets telling Ramadi residents to leave their homes within 72 hours, showing safe routes of escape-By Times of Israel staff December 21, 2015, 10:18 pm
The Islamic State is barring civilians from leaving its stronghold in the Iraqi city of Ramadi, as the country’s military gears up to attack and retake the key location seized by the Islamist militants in May, Reuters reported Monday.“There are families that managed to escape the gangs of Daesh,” Iraqi defense ministry spokesman Naseer Nuri told Reuters, using an Arabic acronym for the group.“There is intelligence information from inside the city that they are preventing families from leaving; they plan to use them as human shields.”Iraqi state TV quoted the country’s chief of staff as saying Monday that the attack on Ramadi would begin “in the coming hours.”Leaflets dropped by Iraqi military planes Sunday called on residents — estimated at anywhere from 4,000 to 10,000 — to leave their homes within 72 hours. The leaflets showed safe routes of escape and advised residents to take identification documents with them.IS overran large parts of Iraq in June 2014, including major territory in Anbar, which stretches from the borders with Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia to the western approach to Baghdad. The Iraqi government and IS battled over Ramadi, the provincial capital of Anbar province, from October 2014 until May, when IS forces blitzed them out with dozens of massive suicide truck bombs. Since then, the Iraqi military and militias backed by US-led airstrikes have spent months fighting to defend the area around the city. There are currently 3,500 US troops in Iraq in a training, advisory and assistance role, who have been helping the Iraqi army prepare for the battle to retake Ramadi.

In leaked tape, ex-Argentine FM says Iran bombed Jewish center-During 2012 conversation with local Jewish leaders, Hector Timerman declared, ’18 years ago they planted the bomb’-By JTA December 21, 2015, 9:26 pm-the times of israel
BUENOS AIRES — Argentina’s former foreign minister said on secretly recorded phone conversations that Iran was responsible for the 1994 bombing of the AMIA Jewish center in Buenos Aires while he was negotiating with Tehran. The conversations featuring Hector Timerman, who is Jewish, were released Friday by the Argentine radio station Mitre. In the leaked recordings of conversations with leaders of the Argentine Jewish community, Timerman defends the efforts made by the government of then-president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, saying the only goal is to solve the AMIA case. Timerman justifies the negotiations with Iran to jointly investigate the attack, saying “Eighteen years ago they planted the bomb.”The bombing left 85 dead and hundreds wounded. The conversations took place in 2012, when AMIA criticized the negotiations with Iran. In the first recording, Timerman is speaking with Guillermo Borger, then the president of the AMIA Jewish community organization.Timerman says: “I’m calling you because it hurts. It hurts me as a Jew to hear the critics from AMIA. And it seems that the best choice is to do nothing, and if we [the government] do nothing, the AMIA will be happy. But I’m doing this for AMIA.”The foreign minister also said that AMIA prosecutor Alberto Nisman told him in a private call that he was in favor of the negotiations, but after Iran and Argentina signed memorandum of understanding to jointly investigate the bombing, Nisman challenged the agreement, asking a federal judge to declare it unconstitutional. In the second tape, AMIA vice president Jose Scaliter also joins the conversation:Borger: “We don’t regard Iran as valid [as a negotiating partner].”Timerman: “And who do you want me to negotiate with, Switzerland?”Borger: “I will just say that Iran lies, is not credible and denies the Holocaust.”Timerman: “But we don’t have anyone else to negotiate with […] Well, tell me who you want me to negotiate with?”Later, Borger says: “I hope you can negotiate with another …”Timerman: “If there was someone else, they [the Iranians] wouldn’t have planted the bomb. So we are back to the beginning. Do you have someone else for me to negotiate with?”Scaliter: “We don’t tell you with whom you must negotiate.”Timerman: “No, you tell me with who cannot negotiate.”Scaliter: “Right.”Timerman: “Ah, are you smart.”Later, Borger says that the special AMIA prosecutor, Alberto Nisman, “carried out a serious and important investigation and says Iran did it.”Timerman: “So?”Borger: “… so I will trust him if they will present to the justice.”Timerman: “So how do you want me to bring them [the Iranian fugitives to Argentina]? You never know what should be done.”Nisman was found dead in his Buenos Aires apartment on January 18. The cause of his shooting death has yet to be determined. The recording was released by Radio Mitre on a program called “La noticia deseada,” or “the desired news,” on Friday when guest journalist Daniel Santoro provided the recordings that he used in his book, “Nisman debe Morir,” or “Nisman should die.”In 2015, Timerman resigned his AMIA membership, expressing his “indeclinable resignation” due to the “obstructionist actions” that the institution had made against a deal with Iran to investigate the attack.Though Argentina has accused the Iranian government of directing the bombing, and the Lebanon-based terror group Hezbollah of carrying it out, no arrests have been made in the case. Six Iranians have been on the Interpol international police agency’s most wanted list since 2007 in connection with the bombing. The new government of Argentina last week effectively voided an agreement with Iran to jointly investigate the bombing. In its first week of operation, the government under President Mauricio Macri withdrew the appeal filed by its predecessor led by Kirchner of a federal court decision declaring the 2013 pact unconstitutional.
Rightist arrested at protest on behalf of Duma Jewish terror suspects-For second night in a row, activists try to block off entrance to Jerusalem; rioters puncture police cars’ tires-By Judah Ari Gross December 21, 2015, 10:40 pm-the times of israel
Police officers arrested a right-wing activist during an illegal demonstration at the entrance to Jerusalem on Monday night against the prolonged detention of Jewish Israelis suspected of carrying out a fatal firebombing in a Palestinian village in the West Bank. The July 31 attack killed three members of the Dawabsha family. Only one member of the family — four-year-old Ahmed — survived the attack, and remains hospitalized in Israel. The 18-month-old baby Ali was killed on the night of the attack, while parents Riham and Sa’ad succumbed to their injuries in the succeeding weeks. An unspecified number of Jewish suspects have been arrested in connection to the attack, as part of a Shin Bet investigation that is still largely under a strict gag order. On Monday, dozens of right-wing protesters attempted to block the highway leading into the capital, but were prevented from doing so by law enforcement officers, a police spokesperson said.“They tried to ruin the day-to-day lives of city residents, but a police unit operating on the scene prevented it, forcing the rioters onto the sidewalks and allowing the free movement of transportation,” the official said.Only one suspect has been arrested for disturbing the peace so far, the police said in a statement. Rioters also punctured the tires of two police cruisers, the police said.Violence broke out on Sunday night during a similar, but larger demonstration by right-wing activists in the same area, under Jerusalem’s Chords Bridge, to protest the ongoing incarceration of suspects in the case.Six police officers were wounded by the attacks directed at them by a small minority of the protesters, a police statement said. One officer got left with a broken hand.About 300 people in total took part in the Sunday demonstration, and police arrested six protesters for disturbing the peace.Earlier Sunday, the Shin Bet security service announced another “development” in the Duma case, which is nearing six months without resolution. However, the agency stressed that the gag order on details about the case is still in place. The arson has been ruled a terror attack by authorities, leading Israel’s security cabinet to vote to extend to Israeli civilians several counterterrorism measures used in the West Bank against Palestinian terror suspects, including “administrative detention” without trial.Under the rules of administrative detention, suspects believed to be directly involved in terror activity have the right to appeal their detention to the High Court of Justice, but do not receive a due-process trial in regular court. The alleged Jewish extremists were detained by the Shin Bet in late November on suspicion of carrying out the attack. On Wednesday, their attorneys, who were allowed to meet with all but one suspect only after two weeks of detention — and only after appeals to the High Court — alleged that the detainees were tortured during their interrogations. Some 500 right-wing activists also demonstrated on Saturday night in Jerusalem — outside the home of Shin Bet chief Yoram Cohen — against the detentions and alleged torture. The carried signs that read, “We demand justice” and “Enough persecution by the [state] prosecution.”In response to the accusations, officials with the Shin Bet said over the weekend that the agency’s actions were within the bounds of the legal mandate given to it by the cabinet. The conditions of the suspects’ detention, including the denial of legal counsel for more than two weeks, were brought before the High Court of Justice last week and were approved, they noted.“All the actions [of the Shin Bet] are carried out according to law and in keeping with judicial precedent,” the organization said in a statement, “and are subject to close oversight of higher authorities.”Adiv Sterman and Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.
Grandma arrested for flinging falafel at her husband-55-year-old from Safed kept in jail overnight after hurling snack during marital argument-By Lee Gancman December 21, 2015, 10:51 pm-the times of israel
A 55-year-old grandmother from the northern city of Safed was arrested during an incident of domestic violence that involved her throwing a falafel-filled pita at her husband. The unnamed woman told the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper Monday that a fight broke out between her and her husband last week after he returned home with the falafel dinner for two in hand. The woman said that “ranting and raving” by her husband led her to call the police, but that she was arrested when her husband told the officers that she had thrown the pita at him. After spending the night behind bars in Kiryat Shmona, the local magistrate’s court granted her conditional release. The woman was placed under a week-long restraining order that banned her from coming within 100 meters (109 yards) of her house and from contacting those involved in the incident. Israel Police spokesperson Luba Samri told The Times of Israel Monday that the investigation into the case was ongoing. The woman’s husband declined to comment on the incident.
