Dear Residents and Families,
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a disproportionate impact on the people who live in long term care and retirement residences. Over the last year and a half, we have worked together to protect those in our care from the worst outcomes from the pandemic, and sadly, our work is not yet done. Variants of concern are more contagious than ever and pose a higher risk of transmission compared to the original strain of COVID-19. As an industry leader, Revera has decided to update its vaccine policy. Effective October 12, vaccination against COVID-19 will be mandatory for Revera staff across Canada. This policy applies to all employees, agency staff, students, volunteers, and contractors at all Revera sites, including the Support Office, who must be vaccinated unless they are medically unable. The changes to Revera’s policy are being made in coordination with other industry partners, including senior living operators Chartwell, Extendicare, Responsive Group and Sienna, to demonstrate that we are united in our mission to protect the safety of residents.Vaccines are a proven, safe and powerful way to reduce the spread and severity of COVID-19. We know that after the vast majority of Revera’s residents were vaccinated we saw a dramatic reduction in negative outcomes from COVID-19 in our homes and residences. We are truly grateful for this and are committed to maintaining this positive trend. The change in our vaccine policy reflects the fact that our society, and you, our residents and their families, increasingly expect full vaccination for healthcare workers. This is an expectation that I fully support, as does all of Revera’s senior leadership team.In the context of a global pandemic, our policy of mandatory vaccination for all employees is consistent with Revera’s obligations under applicable health and safety legislation to take strong measures to protect our residents and staff and, quite simply, it’s the right thing to do. Be well. Stay safe. Stay strong. Thomas Wellner, President & CEO, Revera Inc.
Trudeau says he won't back down after protesters hurl death threats, racist and sexist slurs-Protesters heard shouting racist insults at police officer of colour on protective detail-Peter Zimonjic, Ryan Maloney · CBC News · Posted: Aug 29, 2021 2:12 PM ET
Protesters wait for Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau to arrive at a campaign event in Bolton, Ont., on Friday. The angry crowds outnumbered police and the event had to be cancelled. Another protest in Cambridge, Ont., today was delayed for an hour after crowds protesting against Trudeau hurled death threats, anti-lockdown and vaccine comments and racial and sexist slurs. (Sean Kilpatrick/The Canadian Press)-For the second time in a week, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau has had a campaign event disrupted by protesters shouting obscenities, uttering death threats against the prime minister and hurling racist and misogynist insults at people of colour and women in his protective detail. While making a stump speech to promote his party's climate change policies in Cambridge, Ont., Sunday morning, the Liberals were forced to delay Trudeau's appearance for an hour because of the disruptions. Signs brandished by angry protesters displayed slogans such as "Who benefits from the lock down?" and the "Liberals ruined the country," with one protester shouting through a megaphone decked out with the name; "InfoWars," a U.S.-based far-right conspiracy theory website. When the event did start, it was disrupted by honking horns and foul and threatening language hurled from a crowd of people -- almost all of whom were unmasked and were not maintaining physical distance from one another. Asked if he felt he could continue to hold campaign events safely, Trudeau said his message on climate change and vaccination was not one he would walk away from. "No, I'm not going to back down on a message that Canadians know is the right path forward, and that's why Canadians need to choose to move Canada forward in this pivotal time," Trudeau said. CBC News was present when a protester shouted a racist remark at a police officer of colour on Trudeau's protective detail, while another protester was heard making misogynist remarks to a female police officer on the detail "First of all, I want to thank the police officers, local and national, who do an amazing job in both keeping people safe and allowing Canadians to express themselves," Trudeau said. "That is what an election is all about. We may disagree with them, and of course, we will always condemn violence and hatred.""This needs to make us ever more convinced of the importance of the choice in this election. Do we fall into division and hatred and racism and violence, or do we say no."On Sunday, the Conservative Party tweeted: "The threatening images and behaviour are disgusting. This needs to stop immediately. Canada is better than this."Angry crowd of protesters delayed a campaign stop for Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau in Ontario, days after a rally was cancelled over security concerns. Disagreements on the campaign trail aren’t uncommon, but political watchers say these events have reached a new level of nastiness. Trudeau has been dogged by protesters at many of his campaign events. He was forced to cancel a campaign event in Bolton, Ont., Friday night when hundreds of angry protesters showed up at the Liberals' outdoor rally.Among the protesters of Friday were anti-vaccination activists who shouted vulgarities at Liberal volunteers and carried anti-Trudeau signs and flags scrawled with obscenities. The crowd was frustrated with Trudeau's push to make vaccines mandatory in some settings and his support for provincial vaccine passports to restrict entry into some non-essential businesses. In response to the behaviour, Conservative candidate Kyle Seeback said that the volunteers from his campaign who attended the protest are no longer welcome on his campaign team. "My campaign has zero-tolerance for obscenities or threatening behaviour against any candidate," Seeback said.Speaking at an event in Fredericton on Saturday, Conservative Leader Erin O'Toole said he is trying to run a positive campaign, and he "strongly condemns any form of harassment" on the campaign trail. We should be having a healthy and respectful debate. We have no time for people who bring negativity to campaigning. I urge everyone to put the country and our democracy first — let's have a positive debate of ideas on the future. That's my approach, and that's my expectation for every single member of our team," he said. "I expect professionalism, I expect respect. I respect my opponents."On Sunday evening, O'Toole issued a news release stating that anyone who does not support his party's plan to tackle climate change would not be welcome in the caucus."If there are candidates who don't support it — or any other part of Canada's Recovery Plan — they won't be sitting in the caucus of a future Conservative government," he said. The statement came just hours after Trudeau called out O'Toole during an event in Cambridge, Ont. for, in his words, not doing enough to condemn "conspiracy theories" from an incumbent Tory candidate. At a campaign event in Saint-Hyacinthe, Que., earlier in the day, O'Toole was repeatedly pressed about an undated flyer that longtime MP Cheryl Gallant sent before the election to constituents in the eastern Ontario riding of Renfrew–Nipissing–Pembroke. In the materials, she suggested federal Liberals would pursue a "climate lockdown" and said her constituents should make the upcoming election "a referendum on more lockdowns."Gallant also released a video in June in which she asked: "How long do you think it will take for the Trudeau Liberals to start calling for a climate lockdown?" Liberals shared a screenshot of Gallant's flyer online Sunday, prompting the Conservative Party to allege that the Liberals have candidates who support "9/11 truther conspiracies."In a tweet, the party highlighted a 2011 tweet from Toronto Centre Liberal incumbent Marci Ien, in which she said "Loose Change 9-11: An American Coup," a 9/11 conspiracy theory documentary, "really makes you think about what really happened on September 11, 2001."The tweet came to light in the Toronto Centre byelection last October. Ien, a former journalist, tweeted at the time: "I've spoken often with the families of 9/11 victims and shared their stories as a broadcaster — and I'll also do everything I can as an MP… to help keep Canadians safe from all such tragedies."O'Toole wouldn't tell reporters if he found Gallant's comments acceptable and instead pivoted to promoting his platform, which includes a plan to fight climate change."We're running on a plan to get our country back on its feet, not on things that happened months or years ago," he said.Shortly after O'Toole's statement was released threatening to turf people from caucus if they didn't support the Conservative climate plan, Gallant tweeted that she is proud to run on the Conservatives' recovery plan platform "in its entirety. Conservative campaign spokesperson Cory Hann said party officials spoke with Gallant Sunday about the views she expressed in the video and that she removed them as a result of that conversation. Gallant posted the tweet after the party asked her to publicly confirm her support for the party platform, he said.Asked about Gallant earlier Sunday, Trudeau said it was "extremely disappointing" to see elected politicians "peddle in conspiracy theories."It's not enough for leaders like Erin O'Toole to simply distance themselves from those comments. He has to flat-out condemn them and then correct the record," he said.Drawing a link to the aggressive protests outside of his event, Trudeau said the Conservative leader can help people "shouting out here today" understand they are misinformed on matters such as climate change and vaccines. "We know they don't listen to me. Perhaps they will listen to Erin O'Toole," he said. "That's the choice that Erin O'Toole needs to make right now around Cheryl Gallant and all of these conspiracy theories being peddled."With files from from the CBC's Janyce McGregor and Travis Dhanraj-CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices.
Group of Canadian long-term care operators to enforce mandatory COVID-19 shot policy-LTC operators’ vaccine mandate a ‘great move’Holly McKenzie-Sutter, The Canadian Press-Last Updated Thursday, August 26, 2021 7:27PM EDT
A group of major Canadian long-term care operators will require all staff be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 this fall, with those who don't take the shots being asked to go on unpaid leave.Chartwell Retirement Residences, Extendicare, Responsive Group Inc., Revera Inc., and Sienna Senior Living announced the plan in a joint statement on Thursday. They said the stronger policy is necessary as a fourth wave of infections driven by more contagious variants of the virus is spreading in the country. The Revera Westside Long Term Care Home is pictured in Toronto on Monday, Dec. 7, 2020. Revera Inc. has released a report that’s critical of the public health system’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, even as the for-profit long-term care operator faces criticism for its part in recent outbreaks. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Nathan Denette"Front-line staff at each organization have demonstrated an enthusiastic response to our voluntary vaccination programs," the group said in a statement. "We thank them for their commitment, but we need to do more."Employees who aren't fully vaccinated as of Oct. 12 will be placed on unpaid leave of absence.Vaccination will also be required for new hires, students and other personnel working with the companies. The group said it doesn't expect the new policy to impact staffing levels, noting that the companies now offer staff access to education about vaccination, help with booking appointments and paid time off to get vaccinated. It said those policies have resulted in "already high staff vaccination rates that continue to rise each week."Thousands of long-term care residents have died from COVID-19 since the pandemic began as homes across the country dealt with major outbreaks. The coalition of home operators said unvaccinated staff are more likely to bring the virus to work as infection rates increase again.Their statement said the vaccination policy will help reduce the need for isolation and other restrictions on residents in the event of outbreaks. In Ontario, where more than a third of people who have died from COVID-19 were long-term care residents, the province has set minimum standards for vaccination policies in seniors' homes.Staff must show proof of full vaccination or a medical exemption, and those not vaccinated must take an educational program about COVID-19 vaccination. The Ontario Long-Term Care Association has asked the province to strengthen those rules by mandating COVID-19 vaccinations for all direct care providers. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 26, 2021.
CNW Group-Revera to cut long-term care jobs at Hallowell House during pandemic-Thu, August 26, 2021, 11:22 AM
PICTON, ON, Aug. 26, 2021 /CNW/ - Revera plans to cut long-term care jobs at Hallowell House in Picton, Ontario during the fourth wave of COVID-19.
"Clearly Revera has learned nothing during this pandemic," said Unifor National President Jerry Dias. "Revera is determined to maintain skeleton staff levels to care for residents as it continues its profit over people business model."The union was notified weeks ago that new schedules would be implemented that reduced the number of full-time PSW's and RPN's. The announced staff reduction comes following a provincial mandate to reduce occupancy in wardrooms from four to two, resulting in a reduction in the total number of residents. The union has countered with solutions to avoid layoffs but the employer has yet to officially respond, though they have delayed the reductions for four weeks past the August 27th implementation plan."All long-term care facilities are currently experiencing severe staff shortages," said Unifor Local 8300 President Kathleen Brooks. "Rather than improving care for residents and working conditions for employees Revera is using this new occupancy mandate, designed to provide better care for vulnerable seniors, as an opportunity to slash full-time jobs."This week Hallowell House workers began a daily information picket from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., braving extreme heat to notify the community of the impending job cuts. Katha Fortier, Assistant to the Unifor National President will join workers on the line today at 3 p.m. and is available for media interviews."The workers are fighting for residents and for themselves. The public and the families need to know these job cuts will mean less care for residents than they currently have," said Brooks. "This is not the time for Revera to remove trained staff.""It's a known fact that there is a shortage of trained long-term care workers combined with a severe retention issue but Revera is throwing these COVID-heroes to the curb so it can keep up payments to shareholders," said Dias. "This illustrates the need for Ontario to accelerate the standard of four hours of daily care per resident scheduled to take effect by 2025 so that these for-profit homes will have to maintain proper staffing levels."Unifor is Canada's largest union in the private sector and represents 315,000 workers in every major area of the economy. The union advocates for all working people and their rights, fights for equality and social justice in Canada and abroad, and strives to create progressive change for a better future.SOURCE Unifor.
