all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one
hour is she made desolate.

man who is great enough to be able to keep all the people in subjection
to himself and to lift us out of the economic bog into which we threaten
to sink. Send us such a man. Be he a god or a devil, we will accept

Harnessing AI to reinforce security and identity in Australia-Jun 1, 2025, 12:48 pm EDT | Ramesh Songukrishnasamy
As
the Australian digital landscape evolves, security threats are becoming
increasingly sophisticated and are now driving the need for innovative
solutions to protect identities and access systems for many
organisations and their employees.Integrating artificial intelligence
(AI) into secure identity technologies can help enhance both
organisational security and the user experience. AI now has the
capability to augment authentication, access control and identity
verification so organizations can remain resilient against the rising
tide of cyber threats.AI-driven innovations in identity securityAI
agents are revolutionizing the security and identity industry by
embedding intelligent, automated capabilities across various
solutions. For example, advanced identity verification services use
AI-driven decision-making to enable real-time authentication, helping
businesses and government agencies verify users with unprecedented speed
and accuracy. By integrating AI into these processes, organisations can
significantly reduce the reliance on manual verification and minimise
fraud risks, while ensuring seamless and secure identity authentication
in high-security environments.Biometric security solutions also benefit
from AI-driven presentation attack detection (PAD), strengthening
fingerprint and facial recognition technologies against sophisticated
spoofing attempts. As biometric authentication becomes the preferred
method for secure access, AI plays a crucial role in enhancing accuracy,
adaptability and reliability.Beyond biometrics, AI-powered indoor
location services can help improve security and operational efficiency
by enabling precise tracking of people and assets within controlled
environments. These AI-driven solutions are particularly valuable in
sectors such as healthcare, government and enterprise security where
precision, reliability and compliance are crucial.According to the 2025
State of Security and Identity Report from HID, 64 per cent of security
leaders globally are using or planning to implement AI-powered solutions
for security purposes, citing benefits such as improved threat
detection, operational efficiency and scalability. In Asia Pacific, 76
per cent of security leaders are currently implementing or planning to
implement AI-powered solutions for their organisations, according to the
report.Among the biggest challenges that security leaders are concerned
with when adopting AI solutions are: security and privacy concerns
around AI (41 per cent), trust in AI reliability and accuracy (35 per
cent), cost of implementation (35 per cent), and concerns about AI in
decision making transparency (29 per cent). Additionally 41 percent of
Asia Pacific security leaders are concerned about evolving cybersecurity
threats, the integration of legacy systems with modern technology,
balancing security with user convenience, and cost constraints.Enhancing
access control and digital identity management with AI-Beyond
authentication, AI is revolutionizing access control and digital
identity management. AI can be harnessed as a critical tool for
increasing security, streamlining usability and simplifying the
deployment of access control solutions. One of AI’s most powerful
applications is anomaly detection, which identifies and responds to
security breaches such as unauthorised tailgating through secure
entryways.AI also enhances interoperability by linking multiple identity
systems to reduce the need for repeated authentication while improving
overall security awareness. This integration ensures that identity
credentials remain consistent across various platforms to help minimise
potential security gaps.AI-driven natural language interfaces simplify
the configuration, maintenance and troubleshooting of security systems
to help make deployment more efficient. AI chatbots and virtual
assistants can help security teams quickly configure systems, identify
potential issues and provide real-time solutions.Additionally,
AI-powered predictive maintenance tools can proactively identify and
resolve security system vulnerabilities before they become critical
issues, ensuring organizations maintain a high level of security at all
times.Addressing data privacy, ethics and compliance in AI securityWith
the rise of AI-driven security solutions comes the responsibility to
uphold data privacy, ethical AI usage and regulatory
compliance.Privacy-by-design and security-by-design principles can be
integrated across the product lifecycle, ensuring its solutions align
with Australian and global privacy regulations. These principles ensure
that AI-powered solutions are designed with security at their core,
rather than as an afterthought. While some vendors do not manage customer
data directly, they can offer tools that empower organizations to meet
stringent compliance requirements. For example, a global privacy policy
outlines how an organization collects, uses and protects personal data
both within Australia and worldwide, which helps reinforce trust in
AI-powered identity solutions; while a clear AI use policy or internal
guidelines can be implemented to govern responsible AI adoption and
ensure compliance with ethical standards and legal frameworks. These
guidelines ensure that AI applications do not inadvertently introduce
biases, compromise user privacy or violate regulatory mandates. However,
AI is only as good as the data it is trained on. To mitigate risks
related to biased algorithms and unintended discrimination, AI models
must be tested with diverse datasets that reflect the real-world
demographics and use cases of customers. This approach helps
organizations comply with data protection laws while fostering trust
among end-users.Scalable AI-powered security for government and
enterprises-AI integration can be extended across diverse sectors, from
government institutions to enterprise environments, to support scalable
security implementations tailored to specific industry needs. AI-driven
identity verification, biometric authentication and real-time access
control are becoming fundamental elements of secure digital
transformation strategies for organizations worldwide. For instance,
advanced facial biometric solutions can enhance identity verification at
airports to streamline passenger authentication while ensuring high
security standards. In enterprise settings, fingerprint and facial
recognition sensors, when combined with RFID technologies, can enable
multi-factor access control to strengthen security without compromising
convenience.Government agencies are also increasingly leveraging
AI-powered security solutions to enhance national security, protect
critical infrastructure and manage citizen identities. AI-driven digital
identity verification solutions are enabling more secure and efficient
identity issuance processes, thereby reducing fraud and improving
service delivery. One example is Australia’s SmartGates, which use
facial recognition technology combined with a biometric ePassport to
confirm the identity of international travellers. This provides a quick
and secure way to enter Australia.Future AI trends in security and
identity-Looking ahead, AI will continue to shape the future of security
and identity in several key areas:AI-driven threat detection:
Increasing reliance on AI for proactive threat identification and
mitigation. AI-powered security analytics can help enterprises detect
and respond to cyber threats in real time to significantly reduce
response times and mitigate risks before they escalate.Advanced
biometric authentication: AI-powered biometrics will become more
sophisticated, to help improve authentication accuracy and user
convenience while reducing the risk of identity fraud.Unified security
platforms: AI will enable centralized control of multiple security
systems, making it easier for enterprises to manage access control,
identity verification and authentication processes across various
locations.Agentic AI for automation: Organizations will increasingly
rely on AI assistants to automate security protocols, reduce
administrative burden and enhance operational efficiency. As AI adoption
accelerates, the industry must address ongoing concerns around data
privacy and ethical AI usage to enable broader acceptance and deployment
of AI-driven security technologies. The security and identity industry
is committed to advancing AI-powered identity security while ensuring
responsible and compliant AI integration across its solutions.
Greece launches Personal Citizen Number for unified digital ID system-May 28, 2025, 3:07 pm EDT | Lu-Hai Liang
Greece
has launched its unified digital ID system with the new Personal
Citizen Number (PCN).The PCN is the new universal ID for Greek citizens
across all public services, and will replace the older numbers issued by
various state agencies.Greece’s prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis
said: “The new Personal Number that will be assigned to every citizen
becomes the key for unlocking any transaction with the public
sector.”The PCN will be issued through the MyInfo app in the Gov.gr
digital wallet, where citizens will be able to generate a part of the
number, with the platform to start operating from June 3. Users will
need Taxisnet credentials and a registered mobile number in the National
Communication Registry to obtain their PCN via the MyInfo app.The PCN
will complement existing numbers such as the tax office registration
number (AFM), the AMKA social security number and the ID number. Those
who have either an AFM or AMKA, whether Greek citizen or foreign
resident, will be assigned a PCN.The personal number is unique and will
not change throughout a citizen’s life. It consists of 12 characters:
three alphanumeric elements, two of which can be selected, and the
person’s Tax Identification Number (AFM).Newly issued ID cards will
feature the PCN, while those who have already acquired new ID cards
won’t need to replace them as their PCN can be accessed digitally. In
late March, the Greek state began introducing personal identification
numbers (PINs) on its physical national ID cards. The 12-digit
identifiers are unique to each citizen and are used across all state
services. The PIN is physically printed on ID cards and digitally
embedded in chips but is not linked to biometric data. The update is
aligned with the European Union Digital Identity (EUDI) wallet.Greece
also launched its digital wallet for children to use when accessing
age-restricted online platforms or content. The new Kids Wallet is an
optional equivalent to the grown-ups’ Gov.gr Wallet, and allows for
parents to provide consent for kids to access online assets up until 15
years of age.The Kids Wallet will store the child’s digital ID number,
and link to their parent or guardian’s online tax ID credential, at
least until its replacement by the new personal identification number is
complete.Greece’s digital transformation strategyThe issuance of the
new unified digital ID system is part of the Greek government’s overall
digital transformation strategy. Under the Digital Greece strategy
2020-2025, 475 projects were begun, with 295 ongoing, and 1701 digital
services in gov.gr.The “Digital Transformation Bible” set out guidance
in the technological infrastructure of the Greek state, as it educates
and trains the population on the acquisition of digital skills and how
the country utilizes digital technology in all sectors of the economy
and public administration. In January 2024, Greece joined the Digital
Cooperation Organization (DCO) and is a council member among 15 other
member states. The DCO says it is the world’s first standalone
international organization focused on the digital economy. The
Riyadh-headquartered organization wants Global South countries to join
global digital policymaking, and is in talks with the Council of Europe
and the Africa Union to collaborate on an AI treaty that seeks to
establish ethical principles along with practical applications.Last
year, the DCO inked an agreement with the United Nations Development
Programme (UNDP) on digital cooperation. Earlier this year, it announced
several Memoranda of Understanding with the Mohammed Bin Salman
Foundation (MISK), tech company HP and the Agency for Economic
Cooperation and Development (AED).
Spain’s digital wallet to be
included in EU age assurance app pilot project-EU age-check app to
launch in July, says tech chief Henna Virkkunen-May 30, 2025, 5:29 pm
EDT | Joel R. McConvey
In tandem with enforcement action on
age assurance, the European Commission is ramping up activity on the EU
age verification app, now scheduled to launch in July. Also this week it
was revealed that Spain’s “pajaporte” digital wallet has been chosen as a
pilot technology for developing an age assurance tool that can serve as
a foundation on which individual member states can build out their
specific regulations and languages – a so-called white label age
assurance app for the EU.While the Spanish wallet is primarily used for
age assurance, the Cartera Digital Beta can serve as a container for
digital identity more broadly. According to Spanish news agency EFE,
Spain is among those nations that has done “the most advanced work in
developing an age verification app,” which contributed to its
selection.Initial technical documentation suggests users will have to
register in the app using their electronic ID, digital certificate or
the Spanish Cl@ve system. Per reporting in ElDiario.es, “during this
process, 30 anonymous credentials valid for 30 days will be created.
When accessing a porn website, it will display a QR code, which the user
must scan with the app, which will use one of those credentials. Each
credential can be used up to 10 times on the same site, but not on
different sites.”The process leverages a so-called double-blind
verification system, in which the site receives no personal information
from a user, and the verifying third party has no knowledge of how or
where a credential is used.In addition to the Spanish project, France
and Greece initiatives were also selected. Deutsche Telekom (DT) and
Scytáles were awarded a tender to develop a specific age check component
for the EUDI wallet in February. According to officials, “The objective
is to provide a European age verification tool that serves as a common
basis so that each country can adapt it to its national circumstances.
This aims to encourage all tools to be interoperable and prevent each
country from developing its own national solutions, which are less
effective compared to large platforms.” Age assurance measures have
become a high priority for the Commission, as global attitudes shift
toward regulating online content. In comments to the Financial Times,
the EU’s tech chief Henna Virkkunen says “many of the online platforms
are using a design that is very addictive. Minors are using [these apps]
hours and hours, they spend their whole day on mobile. Of course, this
has an impact on their wellbeing.”Virkkunen emphasizes the ability of
operators to “assess and mitigate the risks they are posing,” and tailor
the app accordingly.Beyond age gates for adult content, the principles
of anonymity and data sovereignty are applicable for more general EUDI
wallet use cases. “The European digital wallet will allow European
citizens to identify themselves to the government and public and private
companies, particularly when they require strong authentication (banks,
energy companies, etc.), without having to share their data, as is
currently the case when registering with a username and password,” says a
statement from the Spanish ministry for Digital Transformation.Last
week, ministers from Spain, France and Greece coordinated on a
discussion paper regarding mandatory age restrictions for social media
platforms ahead of a meeting with their EU counterparts on June 6.
Nigeria kickstarts presidential committee to boost DPI implementation-May 30, 2025, 2:26 pm EDT | Masha Borak
Nigeria
is moving forward in its plans to transform the country through digital
public infrastructure (DPI). On Tuesday, it announced a new
presidential committee dedicated to implementing the nation’s DPI goals
and its three main pillars – digital identity, financial payments and
data exchange. The Presidential Committee on the Implementation of DPI is
chaired by President Bola Tinubu and includes representatives from the
federal government, civil service, the National Identity Management
Commission (NIMC) and several ministries. NIMC Director General Abisoye
Coker-Odusote pledged that the commission would improve the quality of
life for Nigerians through digital infrastructure.“We acknowledge our
full responsibility to contribute meaningfully to advancing economic
growth, enhancing citizen engagement, and improving overall quality of
life through DPI,” says Coker-Odusote.Other representatives promised to
unify government databases to allow seamless data exchange and solve
challenges in identity management and financial payments. NIMC is
currently working with the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS)
to link national ID numbers with bank verification numbers for more
secure and efficient transactions, according to NIBSS managing director
and CEO Premier Oiwoh. In April, the National Information Technology
Development Agency (NITDA) presented draft technical standards for DPI
that set out a roadmap for the integration of digital identity and
payment systems and data exchange frameworks.President Tinubu has been
promising to expand its digital ID system with additional investments in
order to transform the country’s economy. The system, created with the
support of the EU and the World Bank, has registered over 90 percent of
adults in the country, he announced in September last year. The country
plans to make registration for national digital ID compulsory for every
citizen. The expansion of the digital ID system will include the
introduction of a Centralized Citizens’ Integrity and Document
Authentication System (CCIDAS) as part of the push to strengthen
national security.Nigeria has kickstarted other projects, including a
health card linked to the national digital ID and biometrics-based
digital verification systems for public servants. In March, the
country’s government announced a US$2 billion investment into DPI for
improving the delivery of digital services to citizens.Earlier in May,
the Ministry of Interior also shared plans for a centralized system for
verifying travel documents.
Hand biometrics experts discuss
synthetic data, image quality standards-EAB webinar gathers specialists
to field audience questions-May 30, 2025, 1:44 pm EDT | Joel R.
McConvey
Hand biometrics are like your favorite character actor:
omnipresent, underappreciated, and typically outshined by the shinier
faces in the room. The European Association of Biometrics’ Council of
Wisdom gathered this week to give some love to hand biometrics in a
recent webinar. The discussion sees experts field questions from audience
members about a variety of topics related to all aspects of hand
biometrics, including fingerprint, palm print and palm vein
modalities. The first concerns the maturity of synthetic fingerprint
generation tech, and to what extent it can be trusted. Martin Drahansky,
from the Brno University of Technology in Czech Republic, says the best
algorithms are now up to the task. “The trouble is to generate
synthetic fingerprints which have real changes of the skin structure,”
including things like injuries, skin diseases or other environmental
factors. So, while the fingerprints themselves are high quality, they
don’t change like real skin. Generative AI is helping to address this,
but is not especially effective yet.Matteo Ferrara of the University of
Bologna says “synthetic data in biometrics is very important” because of
privacy issues, and the difficulty of collecting real data. But, he
emphasizes the importance of mixing synthetic data and real data for
training algorithms, and underscores the importance of testing published
results on real data.A further question concerns standards around image
quality. They exist for fingerprint and face, but not for palm vein
biometrics. Raymond Veldhuis, a professor at the University of Twente,
says “there is a great need for quality standards for vein pattern
recognition.”“But as far as I know, they don’t exist.”The question of
how to protect data is raised, specifically in the context of the GDPR
and cross-jurisdictional sharing. On this, there are no concrete
answers; all participants acknowledge the complexity of sharing data
responsibly and in compliance with stringent data protection laws. The
maturity of contactless fingerprint recognition for smartphone cameras
comes up; Veldhuis says the tech is “not yet mature,” and questions
“whether or not there would be a real market for this.” Drahansky
suggests that there could be applications for police forces in the U.S. –
and also hints at companies developing fingerprint ID for bank account
opening. “Maybe it will be the future,” he says. “But it’s something we
are not using at the moment.”A final question concerns whether palm
prints are a better option than face biometrics for purposes of consent,
as defined by GDPR. But Drahansky says it’s too difficult to capture a
high quality palm print to make it practically feasible in most use
cases. In the end, hand biometrics are likely to remain in the shadow of
facial matching – for now. Gestural biometrics are being pitched as a
potential solution to age assurance for adult content. And plenty of
people still unlock their smartphone with their fingerprint. The
overarching message might be summed up as follows: with all the
different use cases, there’s room enough in the world for every
biometric.
Finding the use case that makes everyone want a
digital wallet: Samsung Wallet-Digital licenses are most important
content, but adoption will come on users’ terms-May 30, 2025, 12:37 pm
EDT | Joel R. McConvey
Rob White, head of identity services at
Samsung Wallet, addressed the company’s ongoing quest to accelerate
adoption of mobile driver’s licenses (mDL) in an online discussion
yesterday hosted by Dock Labs CEO Nick Lambert.According to Lambert,
while mDLs continue to gain traction across the U.S., adoption is still
fragmented – and Samsung Wallet wants to change that.Samsung is one of
the three current giants in the biometric digital identity wallet
market, alongside Google and Apple. The company has been active in the
U.S. market, most recently collaborating with Idemia and the West
Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to offer support for that
state’s mDL in Samsung Wallet. It now supports digital credentials from
six states: Iowa, Arizona, Georgia, Colorado, Maryland and West
Virginia.Samsung among big three wallet providers anchoring strategies
to hardware-Like Google and Apple, Samsung’s wallet product is directly
tied to its hardware. “The overall goal for Samsung Wallet is to provide
great experiences on our devices,” White says. The company wants to
make it easy and convenient for users to securely assert their
identity, protect the privacy of their data, and reduce fraud for any
relying parties – preferably, on Samsung phones. “Wallet is tied to our
hardware.”White notes that Samsung Wallet will soon be available on its
Galaxy watches, with support for digital ID and mDLs. “The goal for
Wallet is to be the replacement for your physical wallet, with all the
things that we put in there.”He calls mDL “arguably the most important
content” in a wallet, in that it represents a safer way to share
identity that offers more user control over exposure of data. “The
current protections just aren’t holding up to the flood of fraudulent
behavior.”But in addition to security, there are possibilities for
transacting in new ways. “Ultimately, we can see a day where content can
be sent in combination – so the idea of maybe sending ID when you make a
payment.” Samsung is also developing a P2P payment system that will
allow users to send money to friends by simply tapping phones. That said,
when it comes to digital ID and adoption of new technologies, it often
all boils down to trust. White compares the current moment to a recent
time when mobile payments still felt insecure to many. “It took a while
for people to warm up and really get over that security concern.”White
says education is a major element in getting people to trust that
digital identity is safe, secure and actually (in theory) more private
than a physical card. But delivering that message effectively is not
easy – especially when there are lags or gaps on implementation. He notes
that “in the U.S., there’s a big chicken and egg problem,” in that
issuers have been slower to move on leveraging digital ID. “The
infrastructure’s just not really in place yet. It’s going to come –
we’re confident of that. But it’s not there yet.”Finally, he says lack
of law enforcement acceptance is a major hurdle to widespread adoption.
He notes that when we carry a wallet to drive, a major part of that is
having ID on hand in the case one is stopped by police. If more forces
accepted mDL, White says, it could be “a true habit-changing use
case.”But there’s a lot that still has to change, not just logistically,
but in terms of basic transactional trust. (What happens if a cop asks
for a phone to be held out the window, then it drops on the highway?
“It’s a thousand dollar smartphone,” White says.)He credits early
adopter states that have “jumped in head-first,” as well as standards
bodies, saying “we’re trying to support those organizations.”Use cases
that make life easier likely to drive adoption-Ultimately, “the most
important scenarios are the ones that drive habit-changing adoption.”
Digital ID at TSA checkpoints is great, if you’re a regular airline
traveler. But not everyone is. And if the idea is to get everyone using
mDLs, they have to have a damn good reason to do so. “Old habits die
hard,” particularly in the physical world. “We need to focus on the use
cases that really make a material difference for the user, make things
easier for them. It’s about frequency and impact.”The answer, then, does
not fall easily into any particular vertical or industry or government
priority. Rather, adoption will accelerate when wallets find their
“killer app” – which is to say, when everyone feels like they need
one.“Me getting a beer quickly at a baseball game is not the most
important use case to solving society – but it would get me to adopt the
mDL.”The question remains: if everyone has mDLs, and therefore everyone
has wallets, whose wallets do they have?White says that, “to some
extent, we can only move at the pace of the ecosystem – how fast the
world around us is moving. There is no one player that does it all.” He
acknowledges that there will be other wallets in the larger wallet
galaxy. Samsung’s goal in the near future is to enable more state
issuing partners for Samsung Wallet. In the end though, the journey is
long. “This is not going to be solved quickly,” says White. “Maybe it’s
like what my guitar teacher always tells me. It’s just about making
progress.”
Infant.ID system can effectively address child swaps,
trafficking: Integrated Biometrics-May 30, 2025, 9:38 am EDT | Ayang
Macdonald
Integrated Biometrics (IB) is a regular exhibitor at
ID4Africa AGMs, but this year, the U.S. biometrics firm showcased its
first commercially available fingerprint capture device capable of
recording a newborn’s fingerprint from the moment they are born.IB
Executive Vice President (EVP), David Gerulski, told Biometric Update in
an interview during this year’s event in Ethiopia that the innovative
Infant.ID system can be effective in addressing several critical
identity, healthcare, and security challenges around the world. The
Infant.ID platform features fingerprint scanners developed by Akiyama,
which together with an SDK make up Integrated Biometrics’ “InfantIB.” IB
holds the license for Infant.ID outside of Brazil.Gerulski said the
system is the go-to solution for addressing problems like child swaps in
hospitals or child trafficking across borders.“This system allows
countries and hospitals to link a child to their mother using their
fingerprints. We can now guarantee that when a baby leaves the hospital
the next day, they are going home with the correct parent,” Gerulski
said.“We’re also the first company able to perform a one-to-many
fingerprint match from birth up to 12 months of age. This means we can
confirm that a one-year-old child is the same individual born on a
specific day and time. That’s the current capability of our technology,”
he added.Gerulski disclosed that as they continue to develop the
technology, their idea is to extend this matching capability beyond the
infancy stage. “It’s a challenge because a baby’s fingerprint changes as
they grow, but we’ve achieved very high match rates from birth to one
year. We’re conducting global studies in partnership with multiple
universities to explore how far we can extend this technology.”Apart
from Brazil where the system has been integrated with the country’s
national digital ID program, and there are plans for a nationwide
deployment, Gerulski said efforts are also afoot to get the technology
deployed in many other parts of the world.Immutable Evidence of
Origin-According to Gerulski, the Infant.ID system aligns with an
advocacy which the Executive Chairman of ID4Africa, Dr Joseph Atick, has
championed for several years, dubbed the Immutable Evidence of Origin
(IEO). This is a verified record of who a person is, where, and when
they were born.“Most national ID programs don’t begin collecting
fingerprints until a person is around 16 or 18. By then, you don’t truly
know where that person was born. They could claim any country as their
birthplace and provide whatever name they choose,” he said.“But when you
capture a newborn’s fingerprints, you record exactly when, where, and
in what country that person was born. This fulfils a long-standing need
that Dr. Atick has spoken about for years.”Integrated Biometrics Vice
President for Strategic Accounts, Eleanor R. Benson, added: “Babies can
be accidentally swapped, not intentionally, but due to human error. With
our system, a baby is registered to their mother, and that match can be
verified when they leave the hospital, ensuring the correct baby goes
home with the correct parent.”“This also applies to healthcare and
vaccination records, especially in refugee camps. It allows for accurate
tracking and the creation of a medical history for the child. So, the
applications are both civil and healthcare-related.”Gerulski mentioned a
case in Peru a few months back. It was the scenario of a baby that was
swapped at birth, and six years later, the mistake was discovered and
the children had to be exchanged after growing up with different
mothers.“That incident could have been prevented with our technology.
People are really embracing this innovation. I believe this is one of
the most significant advancements in identity management in years. We’re
solving a problem that’s long been unsolved.”On Monday this week, the
Government of Paraná in Brazil announced that Infant.ID technology is
anchoring the newly announced Bebê ID project, where the government will
guarantee neonatal biometrics for all babies born in local maternity
hospitals.
Agentic AI needs to be bound to human identity;
Anonybit offers a solution-As AI agents are given a larger role in human
affairs, biometrics matter-May 29, 2025, 6:12 pm EDT | Joel R.
McConvey
“The only way to prove human identity in the digital
world is with biometrics:” so says C. Maxine Most in a post on her
LinkedIn account, addressing the threat presented by AI agents as
outlined in new research from Palo Alto Networks. Cybersecurity experts,
Most argues, have been “obsessively focused on machine identity to the
exclusion of human identity. And now agentic AI is breaking
cybersecurity because there is no strong human identity verification
capability built in at the foundational level.”AI agents, or agentic AI,
are among the newest tools to emerge from the would-be AI boom. With
novelty comes vulnerability: when Palo Alto Networks ran real-world
attack simulations on two identical AI agents running on different
frameworks (CrewAI and Microsoft AutoGen), both failed the test.Anonybit
ensuring agents are accountable-Biometrics and decentralized digital ID
firms are responding with innovations in identity-bound agents.“Without
identity binding, organizations face significant risks: fraudulent
orders, unauthorized approvals, compliance violations, and data misuse,”
says a release from Anonybit. The firm is claiming first-to-market for
an “agentic AI framework that goes beyond authentication – enabling
secure, authorized, and accountable agentic flows across commerce,
payments, and supply chain management.”Working in partnership with
SmartUp, a no-code platform for deploying enterprise AI agents, Anonybit
says its decentralized platform is “the world’s first decentralized
infrastructure that binds identity to agents – authenticating users,
authorizing actions and issuing cryptographically secure identity tokens
across the lifecycle of any agentic flow.”Frances Zelazny, Co-Founder
and CEO of Anonybit, says “agentic commerce holds incredible promise for
efficiency and scale, but without identity, it also introduces serious
risks around trust, fraud, and control. With SmartUp, we’re proving that
identity-bound agents can operate in production, not just in theory.
Our decentralized biometric cloud, data vault, and token management
system form the missing identity layer the enterprise needs to build
trust, ensure accountability, and future-proof agent-driven
automation.”Anonybit’s decentralized biometric cloud supports all major
biometric modalities (face, voice, finger, iris, palm) for
authentication and step-up verification without storing any biometric
data in one place. It says the SmartUp use case shows how identity-bound
agents can authenticate enterprise users or customers initiating
actions, bind agents to those identities using biometrics and
privacy-preserving credentials, authorize specific tasks via scoped
identity tokens and integrations with orchestration platforms, and
provide real-time auditability and enforce zero trust across
workflows.“SmartUp is pioneering agentic automation in core business
functions like order management and supply chain management, and our
customers are already seeing the benefits of secure, identity-bound
agents,” said Moishe Shemtov, country manager for SmartUp. “With
Anonybit’s identity infrastructure, we ensure our agents are not only
autonomous, but accountable.”Amani launches AI agent to automate
compliance in real time-Amani is an AI-driven compliance platform based
at the Dubai International Financial Center’s AI Campus. A release says
it has launched an “intelligent compliance assistant designed to
automate KYC, KYB, and AML processes across regulated industries.”Based
on Amani’s own large language model and trained on five years of
proprietary AI outputs, the Amani Agent “stays in sync with local laws
and regulatory updates across jurisdictions,” automating identity checks
and source verification, applying jurisdiction-specific regulations and
assigning real-time risk scores.“Compliance hasn’t evolved fast enough
for the businesses it’s meant to support,” says Hamid Khan, CEO of
Amani. “It’s still slow, inconsistent, and built around fragmented
tools. The Amani Agent brings all of that together in one place, fast,
auditable, and regulator-friendly by design. We built this to take real
pressure off compliance teams, without cutting corners. The product is
currently in beta rollout with selected banks and crypto exchanges in
the UAE. Amani plans to expand to “the UK and other
jurisdictions.”Au10tix “an ideal match for AI agents”Au10tix gets a nod
in a recent Microsoft presentation on building autonomous agents in
Copilot Studio. A hypothetical insurance claims processing scenario is
used to demonstrate how Au10tix is “an ideal match for AI agents” built
with Copilot. Microsoft highlights Au10tix’s ability to automatically
verify identities and documents across industries, and suggests the two
parties are working on “a transformative ID and document verification
solution.”
Visa sees expanding role of digital ID and passkeys,
launches Click to Pay in Hong Kong-May 28, 2025, 1:52 pm EDT | Lu-Hai
Liang
Visa with ZA Bank is launching Click to Pay in Hong Kong,
with eleven more markets to follow, as it also rolls out Visa Payment
Passkey globally.ZA Bank is a Hong Kong digital bank and is enabling
cardholders in Hong Kong to use Visa Click to Pay to complete online
transactions in seconds. Click to Pay removes the need to manually enter
details such as the 16-digit card number, passwords, or Personal
Account Number (PAN).T.R. Ramachandran, Head of Products and Solutions,
Asia Pacific, Visa, commented: “ecommerce in Asia Pacific has been
accelerated by mobile phone ownership, digital advancements and
connectivity.”“When Click to Pay is used, and combined with Visa Payment
Passkey, consumers can enjoy a seamless checkout experience with just
three clicks while merchants will benefit from a quicker checkout time,
improved authorisation rates and far lower fraud rates.”Cardholders are
able to set up a Visa Payment Passkey using their mobile device’s
biometric capability and use the Passkey for future payment
authentication at participating ecommerce sites.Visa Payment Passkey is
in line with a global trend for passkeys. Passkeys rely on biometrics
such as a person’s face or fingerprints and are steadily replacing
passwords, as the latter is deemed less secure and are, let’s face it,
all-too easily forgotten.Microsoft is arguably the biggest adopter as it
steered users towards biometrics and passkeys when it rolled out a new
sign-in experience for the one billion users of Windows and other
Microsoft services. The UK government is another high profile adopter as
it shifts to passkeys. The Visa Payment Passkey is built to Fast
Identity Online (FIDO) standards with the global payments company
pushing it as the next step in card not present (CNP) authentication.
Visa is rolling it out globally.FIDO2 is a global standard for strong
authentication with a host of technology companies backing it. This
standard stores the authentication credential – passkey – locally on the
consumer’s device and uses the person’s native device biometric
capability or screen lock to authenticate the consumer.Visa observes
expanding role of digital IDAt its Visa Payment Forum in Dallas, the
company highlighted advances in payments technologies including digital
identity-related payments. For Visa, network tokenization is central to
digital identity technology, with nearly half of Visa’s digital
transactions now leveraging the technology.Tokenization is supposed to
improve security by masking the original primary account number and can
be linked to a specific transaction. Visa said that more than a billion
tokens were added in the last quarter.Visa is a proponent of digital
identity and earlier this year set out its stall to partner and work
with governments at any stage of their digital identity deployment. In
February, it released a white paper “Digital Identity and Payments” that
envisioned mobile phone-enabled digital identity credentials and
payments.“Visa’s ongoing work on Payment Passkeys may help facilitate a
mutually reinforcing relationship between payments and digital identity
that could benefit all stakeholders and end-users,” it read.Visa sees
digital identity as a foundational way for countries to uplift their
economies. In another white paper “The Transformational Power of Digital
Payments for Governments,” executive chairman of the Visa board, Alfred
F. Kelly, introduced the first such white paper published by the Visa
Government Solutions team.Visa argues that digitalization is no longer
an optional supplement for the public sector but a “real and urgent
imperative.” The payments company is outlining what it calls five key
opportunities for the public sector such as automating public
procurement and commercial payments, and leveraging payments data for
issues including tourism recovery or urban design.“The digitalization
agenda ultimately supports national competitiveness in the global
economy,” the white paper claims.

to appear in contexts of God's wrath or judgment.)

Severe
storms continue rolling through South and East Coast as heat persists
in the West-Storms have already been sweeping through these areas for
the past few days, bringing tornado damage to Washington County,
Kentucky, and Loudon County, Tennessee.Lightning strikes .May 31, 2025,
1:21 PM EDT By Mirna Alsharif and Christine Rapp
Over 5 million
people across parts of the South, the Plains and the East Coast are at
risk for damaging winds, large hail and possibly a tornado or two this
weekend.Storms have already been sweeping through these areas for the
past few days, bringing EF2 tornado damage to Washington County,
Kentucky, and EF0 damage to Loudon County, Tennessee.A large cluster of
showers continues to push into the Northeast Saturday afternoon, with
heavy rain extending from New England to the Mid-Atlantic region. As of 2
p.m. ET, storms in this region have produced frequent lightning, gusty
winds and small hail. In total, 5 million across the Mid-Atlantic and
the Southern Plains are under a Slight Risk for severe weather including
Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Oklahoma; Wichita, Kansas; and Virginia Beach,
Virginia.Storm chances will increase on the Plains late Saturday
evening, with some storms lingering early Sunday morning. These
thunderstorms will bring the risk of large hail, damaging winds and a
tornado or two. The severe weather risk will shift into Texas by midday
Sunday, with a Slight Risk covering parts of Bryan, Waco and College
Station. All severe weather hazards will be possible including hail,
damaging winds, and a tornado.Heat in the West-Various heat alerts
remain in effect for 14 million people across California on Saturday
afternoon, including in Sacramento, Redding and Bakersfield.
Temperatures will be 10 to 25 degrees above average, with highs maxing
out between 95 and 110 degrees.Las Vegas and Reno, Nevada, face possible
record highs on Saturday afternoon. On Friday, a record-high temperature
of 96 was set in downtown Los Angeles — beating the record of 95 set in
1972, according to the National Weather Service field office in the
city. These unseasonably hot conditions will also fuel fire concerns
across the region. Alerts are currently in place for parts of Nevada and
California, including Reno, through Sunday. Gusty 50 mph winds,
above-average temperatures and low humidity will create prime conditions
for fire growth.Air quality alerts-A strong cold front will continue to
drag smoke from ongoing wildfires in parts of Canada’s Manitoba and
Saskatchewan provinces into the U.S. this weekend.Millions Under Air
Quality Alerts Due to Canada Wildfire-Currently, air quality alerts are
in place for more than 20 million people across the Midwest. Minnesota
and Michigan, including the cities of Minneapolis, Duluth and Grand
Rapids, are in the risk zone. Smoke and hazy skies from these fires may
be visible as far south as the Gulf Coast.Air quality conditions are
expected to improve across the Upper Midwest by the middle of the
workweek.
Severe storms with tornadoes hit the South, while the
West braces for dangerous heat-Heavy rain will sweep through Kentucky up
to southern New York, while dangerously hot temperatures are expected
in California and southern Nevada.May 30, 2025, 9:55 AM EDT / Updated
May 30, 2025, 3:12 PM EDT By Minyvonne Burke
Much of the South
and eastern parts of the country are bracing for extreme weather that
includes tornadoes, while the West is expected to see dangerously high
temperatures.Severe storms will sweep through Kentucky up to southern
New York, the National Weather Service said Friday in a post on X. The
wet weather is expected to bring flash flooding, the weather service
said Thursday. In a Friday morning post on X, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear
said officials were responding to reports of a possible tornado in
Washington County. One person was killed and multiple people were
injured, the Washington County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook
post.Beshear said that "this level of severe weather" was not
expected.Eastern and southeastern parts of the state are expected to see
severe weather throughout the day."Please be alert this morning and
stay safe," the governor said.In Henry County, Georgia, forecasters
warned Friday of damaging wind gusts, hail and possible tornadoes. On
Thursday afternoon, a tornado ripped through the Laurel Creek
subdivision in Henry County, NBC affiliate WXIA of Atlanta reported. At
least 13 structures were damaged, and the 18-year-old son of "The Wire"
actor Tray Chaney was severely injured.Chaney said his son was thrown
"300 feet out of his room" by the tornado."I was sitting on my bed and I
heard the wind, I felt everything," he said in an Instagram video,
panning the camera to show the remains of his flattened house.Chaney
said he had just left the hospital and was going back to see his son in
the intensive care unit."Thank God I'm still living. I survived the
tornado," he said, crying. "I'm doing a video to let you know, cherish
life, cherish life as much as you can. ... I wish I could replace the
pain with my son, I wish he was the one doing the video and I was the
one still in ICU."A tornado watch is in effect through 8 p.m. for parts
of West Virginia, Virginia and North Carolina. Southwest North Carolina
to eastern Alabama is under a severe thunderstorm watch through 8 p.m.
It's possible the area could see wind gusts up to 70 mph along with
large hail and a few tornadoes.Meanwhile, dangerously hot temperatures
are expected in California and southern Nevada, the weather service
said."Significant warming today with an elevated risk for heat illness.
Cooler but more humid over the weekend as tropical moisture moves over
the region, also bringing a chance for showers or thunderstorms," the
agency stated in its forecast discussion Friday morning.Near-normal
temperatures are expected Monday and Tuesday, according to the weather
service.
Smoke from Canadian wildfires triggers air quality
alerts in Midwest and Plains-Poor air quality may persist through
Monday, meaning sensitive groups such as pregnant people, newborns,
older adults or those with respiratory or heart problems should limit
time outdoors.June 1, 2025, 1:36 PM EDT By Aria Bendix
Smoke from
Canadian wildfires continues to blanket parts of the Midwest and Great
Plains, leading to air quality alerts across several states.More than 90
fires scattered across Canada are burning out of control, according to
the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre, a nonprofit that supports
the government’s wildfire response. Active fires in the central Canadian
province of Manitoba have forced roughly 17,000 people to
evacuate.Winds high in the atmosphere pushed that smoke into the Upper
Midwest on Friday, and the plumes continued to travel southeast over the
weekend, reaching as far as the Georgia-Florida border. Some U.S. states
may experience poor air quality through Monday, meaning sensitive
groups such as pregnant people, newborns, older adults or those with
respiratory or heart problems should limit their time outdoors.People in
the affected areas may notice a campfire smell and hazy skies, as well
as colorful sunrises and sunsets, according to the the National Weather
Service.Minnesota has issued an air quality alert for the entire state
until Monday evening. The state’s northern counties are expected to see
air quality that is considered unhealthy based on the Environmental
Protection Agency’s Air Quality Index (AQI), which measures daily air
pollution. Under these conditions, even people who aren’t part of a
sensitive group may experience health effects like itchy eyes, runny
noses, coughing or shortness of breath.Wisconsin issued an air quality
advisory on Friday that expired the next day, but the state’s Department
of Natural Resources said another advisory could be warranted by Sunday
afternoon. Northwestern counties will likely see heavy smoke on Sunday
evening, the department said, and it could migrate across the state on
Monday. Many parts of Wisconsin could experience air quality that’s
unhealthy for sensitive groups, with a pocket of even poorer air quality
in the northwest. In parts of North Dakota, the air quality currently
meets the AQI’s “very unhealthy” threshold, meaning all those exposed
have an increased risk of health effects. State officials have urged
residents, particularly those with respiratory conditions, to consider
limiting their outdoor activities if it’s smoky where they live. Other
ways to reduce exposure include closing windows, running indoor air
filters and wearing an N95 mask outside.South Dakota also issued an air
quality alert for certain areas that lasts through Sunday or until
conditions improve.Wildfire smoke can travel hundreds or thousands of
miles, posing health risks to people far away from an active blaze. In
2023, smoke from Canadian wildfires turned skies orange in the
Northeastern U.S. and led to unhealthy air quality levels in New York
City, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.A study last year found
that people who inhaled the smoke in New York and New Jersey were likely
exposed to extremely large concentrations of fine particulate matter —
tiny particles in the air that can penetrate deep into the lungs.
Short-term exposure to these particles can increase the risk of cardiac
arrest, asthma attacks or stroke, while long-term exposure can increase
the risk of heart disease, lung cancer and chronic kidney
disease.Wildfires are becoming more frequent and intense due to climate
change, along with other extreme weather events like hurricanes and heat
waves. As smoke from Canada billowed into the Midwest over the weekend,
severe storms swept through the South and East Coast and millions of
people in the West were under heat alerts, with temperatures climbing
past 100 degrees.
Pukatagawan residents arrive in Winnipeg as
evacuation continues-Chinook evacuation efforts continuing on
Sunday-Arturo Chang · CBC News · Posted: Jun 01, 2025 12:24 PM EDT |
Dozens
of Pukatawagan residents who took a nearly 16-hour train ride to
Winnipeg were among the latest to escape the community days after a
wildfire forced the evacuation of the northern Manitoba First Nation.A
Via Rail train carrying about 120 wildfire evacuees — most of them from
Pukatawagan — arrived in Winnipeg from The Pas around 7:30 p.m. CT
Saturday.Pukatawagan is about 700 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg, as
the crow flies. The fire near the community was about 9,800 hectares in
size as of the province's latest fire bulletin Saturday.River Caribou
said the journey on the train was the end of a chaotic exit from the
community, which has been under an evacuation order since Wednesday,
when the Manitoba government declared a provincewide state of
emergency."Everybody was in an alarm," Caribou said. "We were put into
The Pas and they accommodated us into an arena.… We were there for about
maybe 12 hours and then we boarded the train to Winnipeg."Coun. Kelly
Linklater said about 1,300 people had been moved out of the community as
of Sunday morning, but there's still more than 1,000 who still need to
be evacuated."As of this morning, there are three Chinooks that are
going up there," Linklater said during an interview on Rosemary Barton
Live. "Fortunately, the winds have changed and moved. Two days ago, they
were moving into the community."The Canadian Armed Forces began flying
out Pukatawagan residents on Chinook helicopters on
Saturday.Pukatawagan's only airstrip — which shut down on Thursday
because of heavy smoke — reopened Saturday morning, but the First
Nation's chief Gordie Bear the runway is too small to accommodate large
aircraft.Cornelia Colomb said she got on a helicopter Saturday
afternoon."There's times that you look out the living room window, you
could see the flames," she said."Keeping the family together was our
[first] priority and keeping calm was our second."Chinook flights
continue-Linklater said the First Nation's leadership expected
evacuation efforts to wrap up Sunday. Evacuees have also been
transported to Portage La Prairie, Brandon and The Pas.Opaskwayak Cree
Nation near The Pas opened up its hall and arena to accommodate some
evacuees."We're in a position where we, of course, we're going to help,"
OCN Chief Maureen Brown said Saturday."We've actually had to build the
makeshift emergency hospital room at our local hall. I'd like to give a
shout out to our teams that assemble so efficiently."OCN begins
voluntary evacuation due to smoke-But on Sunday, that First Nation
announced it was starting voluntary self-evacuation due to poor air
quality in the region.A wildfire about five kilometres west of the
community and neighbouring The Pas — first reported almost a month ago —
was more than 40,000 hectares in size as of Saturday, according to the
province's FireView map. The fire was declared to be under control on
May 23.OCN said in a news release the voluntary self-evacuation is
specifically for elderly residents and people with pre-existing medical
conditions. It said the community is not in any danger due to wildfires,
but that air quality is expected to fluctuate in the coming days.Tracy
Dumas has been volunteering to help out people as they arrived in
Winnipeg, making sure they have food and a place to stay."People were
limited to stuff so they need clothes," she said. "They need hygiene
stuff. They need underwear, socks."Are you an evacuee who needs

the words, "Catastrophic! Catastrophic!"Then the angel said, "Financial

the angel was speaking.
SECOND ANGEL: MIDDLE EAST
Then I saw that
the second angel had a sickle in his hand, such as is used in

Middle East countries. I saw Iran, Persia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, all of
Georgia - Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, all of Asia Minor - full
of blood. I saw blood all over these countries. And I saw fire; Nuclear
weapons used in many of those countries. Smoke rising from everywhere.
Sudden destruction – men destroying one another. I heard these
words:"Israel, Oh Israel, the great judgment has come."
Zamir orders IDF to expand offensive against Hamas to additional parts of Gaza-By Emanuel Fabian-JUN 1,25
IDF
Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir has instructed the military to
expand the ground offensive against Hamas to additional areas in the
Gaza Strip, the military says.Zamir today held an assessment in southern
Gaza with the chief of the Southern Command, Maj. Gen. Yaniv Asor,
chief of the Israeli Air Force, Maj. Gen. Tomer Bar, COGAT head, Maj.
Gen. Ghassan Alian, and other commanders.Additionally, the IDF says
Zamir was instructed to establish additional aid distribution sites for
the Palestinian civilian population.“We are in the midst of a powerful
and uncompromising campaign,” Zamir says to troops in Gaza, in remarks
published by the IDF.“Hamas is losing control. We eliminated the
murderer Muhammad Sinwar, and to all other murderers of October 7, we
convey a clear message: your day will come,” he says.

Houthi missile that triggered sirens in Jerusalem area, central
Israel-Iran-backed rebels in Yemen claim attack targeted Ben Gurion
Airport, after sirens send millions to shelters ahead of Shavuot
holiday-By Emanuel Fabian-Today, 8:07 pm-JUN 1,25
A ballistic
missile launched at Israel by the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen was
successfully intercepted by air defenses, the military said Sunday, in
what has recently become an almost daily occurrence. The missile set off
sirens shortly after 4:50 p.m. across central Israel, the Jerusalem area
and several West Bank settlements, sending millions to bomb shelters a
few hours before the start of the Shavuot holiday.Preceding the sirens
by about four minutes, an early warning was issued by the Home Front
Command to residents, alerting them of the long-range missile attack via
a push notification on their phones. There were no reports of injuries
or damage in the attack. The Houthis took responsibility for the missile
fire, claiming to have targeted Ben Gurion Airport. Earlier this month, a
Houthi missile slipped through air defenses and hit the grounds of the
airport, injuring six people, none of them seriously.Sunday’s missile
fire came after Israel carried out an airstrike in Yemen last Wednesday,
targeting the Houthi-held Sanaa International Airport and destroying a
plane that was in use by the Iran-backed terror group.A separate strike
earlier this month destroyed the airport’s terminal and six planes, and
left craters on its runway, according to Yemeni authorities. The
airfield reopened for a flight 11 days later. Also this month, the
Israeli Air Force struck the Houthi-controlled Hodeida and Salif ports
in Yemen in response to the Iran-backed group’s repeated attacks on
Israel. The Houthis vowed to respond and have since continued their
missile attacks. The Houthis — whose slogan calls for “Death to America,
Death to Israel, [and] a Curse on the Jews” — began attacking Israel and
general maritime traffic in November 2023, a month after the October 7
Hamas massacre. They held their fire when a ceasefire was reached between
Israel and Hamas in January 2025.By that point, they had fired over 40
ballistic missiles and dozens of attack drones and cruise missiles at
Israel, including one that killed a civilian and wounded several others
in Tel Aviv in July, prompting Israel’s first strike in Yemen.Since
March 18, when the IDF resumed its offensive against Hamas in the Gaza
Strip, the Houthis in Yemen have launched 43 ballistic missiles and at
least 10 drones at Israel. Several of the missiles have fallen short.
IDF
says drone strike killed Hezbollah anti-tank missile operator in south
Lebanon-Lebanese health authorities say Israeli attack targeted
motorcycle in village several miles from the border; one person said
wounded after another reported IDF strike By AFP and Emanuel
Fabian-Today, 7:47 pm-JUN 1,25
An Israeli drone strike killed a
Hezbollah operative in southern Lebanon on Sunday morning, the Israel
Defense Forces said, marking the latest in a string of deadly exchanges
that continue to strain a fragile ceasefire between Israel and the
Iran-backed terrorist group. The IDF said the strike, carried out in the
village of Arnoun in Lebanon’s Nabatieh region, targeted a member of
Hezbollah’s anti-tank unit. Lebanon’s health ministry confirmed one
fatality in the attack, which it described as an “Israeli enemy strike”
on a motorcycle. Arnoun lies just five kilometers (three miles) from the
Israeli border. In a separate incident farther south, another Israeli
strike reportedly hit a car in the village of Beit Lif, in the Bint
Jbeil area, wounding one person, according to Lebanese health
authorities. The Israeli military did not immediately comment on that
attack.Since the initiation of a ceasefire agreement in November 2024,
which expired in mid-February, Israel has continued to launch targeted
strikes on Hezbollah operatives and infrastructure, claiming violations
of the truce by the terrorist organization. According to the IDF, over
180 Hezbollah operatives have been killed in Israeli strikes since the
deal was reached. The November truce followed over a year of cross-border
violence that began when Hezbollah started attacking Israel a day after
its Palestinian ally Hamas’s October 7, 2023, terror onslaught. The
fighting between Israel and Hezbollah included two months of open
warfare, and the ceasefire was based on the framework of United Nations
Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 Second Lebanon
War.The resolution required Hezbollah to withdraw its fighters north of
the Litani River — about 30 kilometers (19 miles) from the border — and
dismantle all military infrastructure in southern Lebanon. Israel, in
turn, was to withdraw its troops, though it has maintained five
positions along the frontier it considers “strategic.”The escalating
violence has drawn regional criticism. During a visit to Baghdad on
Sunday, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the Israeli raids as
violations of Lebanese sovereignty. In a joint press conference with
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, both leaders denounced the
Israeli actions.“These repeated Israeli attacks against Lebanon’s
sovereignty are in violation of international law,” Sudani said. He
called for full implementation of the 2006 UN resolution and reiterated
Iraq’s support for Lebanon’s territorial integrity.President Aoun’s trip
to Iraq, his first since taking office in January, also focused on
strengthening bilateral ties in energy, telecommunications, and trade.
Lebanon, grappling with a severe economic crisis, has relied heavily on
Iraqi fuel shipments to keep its power grid functioning. The two nations
have also discussed increased wheat deliveries, with Lebanon expecting
320,000 tons from Iraq in the coming months. In his remarks, Aoun thanked
Iraq for “all the support and donations,” particularly during last
year’s war, when Iraq welcomed thousands of displaced Lebanese
civilians, primarily Shiite Muslims.Hezbollah, which maintains strong
political and military ties with Iran and enjoys support from pro-Iran
factions in Iraq, has not publicly commented on Sunday’s strike. The
developments come amid heightened uncertainty over the long-term
viability of the ceasefire, with tensions simmering along the border and
diplomatic efforts to de-escalate appearing increasingly strained.
Kiev
says over 40 military aircraft destroyed in drone attack deep inside
Russia-Ahead of Istanbul talks, Ukrainian UAVs said to hit bombers at
several airfields, as Russia carries out largest drone assault against
Ukraine since launching full-scale invasion in 2022-By Agencies Today,
7:22 pm
KYIV, Ukraine — A Ukrainian drone attack has destroyed
more than 40 Russian planes deep in Russia’s territory, a Ukrainian
security official told The Associated Press on Sunday, while Russia
pounded Ukraine with missiles and drones a day before the two sides meet
for a new round of direct talks in Istanbul. The official, who spoke on
condition of anonymity to disclose operational details, said the attack
took over a year and a half to execute and was personally supervised by
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The operation saw drones
transported in containers carried by trucks deep into Russian territory,
he said. The drones reportedly hit 41 bombers stationed at several
airfields on Sunday afternoon, including the Belaya air base in Russia’s
Irkutsk region, more than 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles) from
Ukraine. It is the first time that a Ukrainian drone has been seen in the
region, regional governor Igor Kobzev said. He also said in a statement
that the drone had been launched from a truck. Russian officials in the
Ryazan and Murmansk regions also reported drone activity on Sunday
afternoon, but did not give further details. Also on Sunday, at least
seven people were killed and 69 injured when a highway bridge in
Russia’s Bryansk region, neighboring Ukraine, was blown up over a
passenger train heading to Moscow with 388 people on board. No one has
yet claimed responsibility. The attacks came the same day as Zelensky
said Ukraine will send a delegation to Istanbul for a new round of
direct peace talks with Russia on Monday. In a statement on Telegram,
Zelensky said that Defense Minister Rustem Umerov will lead the
Ukrainian delegation. “We are doing everything to protect our
independence, our state and our people,” Zelensky said. After days of
uncertainty over whether Ukraine would even attend, Zelensky’s
announcement confirmed the country’s participation. Russian President
Vladimir Putin had proposed the talks, which have so far yielded the
biggest prisoner exchange of the war, but no progress toward ending the
conflict.According to Trump envoy Keith Kellogg, the two sides are
expected to present respective documents outlining their visions for
peace. Ukrainian negotiators will reportedly offer a roadmap that
includes no restrictions on Ukraine’s future military strength, no
recognition of Russian sovereignty over occupied territories, and a
demand for reparations.Ukrainian officials had previously called on the
Kremlin to provide a promised memorandum setting out its position on
ending the war before the meeting takes place. Moscow had said it would
share its memorandum during the talks.Russian strike hits an army
unit-Russia on Sunday launched the biggest number of drones — 472 — on
Ukraine since the full-scale invasion in February 2022, Ukraine’s air
force said.Russian forces also launched seven missiles alongside the
barrage of drones, said Yuriy Ignat, head of communications for the air
force. Earlier Sunday, Ukraine’s army said at least 12 Ukrainian service
members were killed and more than 60 were injured in aRussian missile
strike on an army training unit. The strike occurred at 12:50 p.m., the
statement said, emphasizing that no formations or mass gatherings of
personnel were being held at the time. An investigative commission was
created to uncover the circumstances around the attack that led to such a
loss in personnel, the statement said. The training unit is located to
the rear of the 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) active front line, where
Russian reconnaissance and strike drones are able to strike.Ukraine’s
forces suffer from manpower shortages and take extra precautions to
avoid mass gatherings as the skies across the front line are saturated
with Russian drones looking for targets.“If it is established that the
actions or inaction of officials led to the death or injury of
servicemen, those responsible will be held strictly accountable,” the
Ukrainian Ground Forces’ statement said.Northern pressure-Russia’s
Defense Ministry said Sunday that it had taken control of the village of
Oleksiivka in Ukraine’s northern Sumy region. Ukrainian authorities in
Sumy ordered mandatory evacuations in 11 more settlements Saturday as
Russian forces make steady gains in the area.Speaking Saturday,
Ukraine’s top army chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, said that Russian forces
were focusing their main offensive efforts on Pokrovsk, Toretsk and
Lyman in the Donetsk region, as well as the Sumy border area.Russia’s
May advances amounted to about 450 square kilometers — its fastest
monthly progress in at least six months, according to open-source
pro-Ukrainian mapping sources. The US estimates that over 1.2 million
people have been killed or injured since the start of the full-scale war
in 2022.Putin has demanded that Ukraine abandon its NATO aspirations
and withdraw from all four regions claimed by Russia as a precondition
for any peace deal. Ukraine, meanwhile, insists that negotiations begin
using current front lines as a reference, not as a recognition of
territorial loss.US President Donald Trump has publicly pressured both
sides to make peace and suggested he could withdraw American support if
no deal is reached — effectively shifting the burden to European powers
with smaller stockpiles of cash and weapons. While Trump has called
Putin “crazy” and openly criticized Zelensky, he maintains that a
resolution is still possible.
IDF: Troops raze 700-meter Hamas
tunnel in Khan Younis-Hamas operative who led war’s deadliest attack on
IDF troops eliminated, army says-Khalil Abed al-Nasser Mohammad Hatib,
commander of January 2024 attack that killed 21 reservists, targeted in
drone strike called in by soldiers who ID’d him, according to IDF-By
Emanuel Fabian-and ToI Staff Today, 6:42 pm-JUN 1,25
A Hamas
commander who led an attack last year that killed 21 Israeli troops in
Gaza, the deadliest attack on IDF soldiers during the war, was
eliminated in a drone strike over the weekend, the military and Shin Bet
said Sunday, as dozens of Palestinians were reportedly killed in
Israeli strikes across the enclave.Troops of the 414th Combat
Intelligence Collection Unit identified Khalil Abed al-Nasser Mohammad
Hatib on Friday and called in the drone strike that killed him, the IDF
said.On January 22, 2024, a cell commanded by Hatib in Hamas’s Maghazi
Battalion carried out an RPG attack against troops operating near the
Israeli border, according to the military. The RPGs hit two buildings
that had been rigged up for detonation and a tank guarding the forces,
killing 21 reservists. It was the highest number of Israeli troops killed
in a single attack since October 7, 2023, when thousands of Hamas-led
terrorists stormed southern Israel to kill some 1,200 people and take
251 hostages, sparking the war in the Gaza Strip. Israel has lost 416
soldiers in the ensuing offensive, as well as two police officers and
three Defense Ministry civilian contractors.Last month, Israel announced
it was launching a renewed offensive in a bid to seize 75 percent of
the Strip.According to the military, Israeli Air Force strikes over the
past day hit dozens of targets in Gaza, including terror operatives,
booby-trapped structures and other buildings used by terror groups,
tunnels, and sniper and anti-tank posts.Meanwhile, during operations in
southern Gaza’s Khan Younis, troops demolished the remains of a
booby-trapped building where Staff Sgt. Danilo Mocanu was killed on May
20, when a bomb planted by terror operatives partially brought down the
structure with him inside. Also in Khan Younis, soldiers of the 7th
Armored Brigade and the Yahalom combat engineering commando unit located
and demolished a 700-meter (0.4-mile)-long Hamas tunnel, the IDF said,
publishing footage of the blast. According to the military, the tunnel
was some 30 meters (98 feet) underground.During the operations,
according to the IDF, troops spotted a cell of three operatives who were
moving explosive devices in order to booby-trap an unspecified site.
The forces called in a drone strike, killing the three operatives, the
IDF said, publishing video of the incident, which showed the targets
carrying large bundles on foot. The military added that troops operating
in Khan Younis have killed dozens of terror operatives, and destroyed
over 100 sites used by terror groups, including by calling in
airstrikes.WAFA, the Palestinian Authority’s official news agency,
reported eight people killed in an Israeli strike on a vehicle in Khan
Younis, five people killed in a bombing of a house in central Gaza’s
Nuseirat refugee camp, and a child killed in an artillery attack on Gaza
City’s Tel Al-Hawa neighborhood, in the Strip’s north. The IDF did not
immediately comment on the reported strikes. The military has said it
seeks to minimize civilian casualties, including by using surveillance
and issuing warning calls, and has accused Hamas of using Gaza’s
civilians as a human shield and fighting out of civilian infrastructure,
including hospitals and schools. The death toll reported by WAFA was in
addition to Palestinian reports of 31 people killed near an Israel- and
US-backed aid distribution hub in southern Gaza’s Rafah. The IDF did not
explicitly deny there had been gunfire in the area, but said it was
unaware of any injuries “within” the aid site. Witnesses said Israeli
forces fired on crowds around a kilometer away from the aid site hours
before the distribution took place. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, the
US- and Israel-backed agency meant to circumvent Hamas in the
distribution of aid, pushed back on the reports, saying that its “aid
was again distributed today without incident.” The organization accused
Hamas of fabricating the reports, and published some 15 minutes of
footage ostensibly showing that no Palestinian civilians were shot at
the site at the reported time of the killings. The Hamas-run health
ministry says more than 54,000 people in the Strip have been killed or
are presumed dead in the fighting so far. The toll cannot be verified
and does not differentiate between civilians and fighters. Israel says
it has killed some 20,000 combatants in battle as of January and another
1,600 terrorists inside Israel during the October 7 onslaught.Agencies
contributed to this report.
Katz to IDF: Press ahead in Gaza
'regardless' of hostage talks-Senior Israeli official: Hamas ‘must
understand it has to accept the Witkoff outline’Official says Israel
‘prepared for negotiations when Hamas comes to terms with reality’; IDF
chief tells families of slain hostages that return of captives is ‘a top
priority task’By Lazar Berman and Emanuel Fabian-Today, 6:20 pm-JUN
1,25
Hamas “must understand that it has to accept the Witkoff
outline,” a senior Israeli official told The Times of Israel on Sunday,
referring to the latest hostage release and ceasefire proposal presented
by US special envoy Steve Witkoff.“Now the IDF is attacking, supplies
are distributed differently, the US is pressing,” the official said.
“And we will be prepared for negotiations when Hamas comes to terms with
reality.”Defense Minister Israel Katz, meanwhile, said that “regardless
of any negotiations,” he instructed the Israel Defense Forces “to
continue forward in Gaza” and achieve all objectives.Katz added that he
also ordered the IDF to use all capabilities to protect troops and
eliminate Hamas.Following Katz’s statement, the IDF announced that Chief
of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir instructed the military to expand the
ground offensive against Hamas to additional areas in the Gaza Strip.
Additionally, the IDF said Zamir was instructed to establish additional
aid distribution sites for the Palestinian civilian population.“We are
in the midst of a powerful and uncompromising campaign,” Zamir said to
troops in Gaza, in remarks published by the IDF. “Hamas is losing
control. We eliminated the murderer Muhammad Sinwar, and to all other
murderers of October 7, we convey a clear message: your day will
come.”On Saturday, Hamas responded to Witkoff’s latest proposal with
amendments and demands, leading the mediator to blast the stance as one
that is “totally unacceptable and only takes us backward.”In a
statement, Hamas said it seeks a permanent ceasefire and a comprehensive
Israeli withdrawal from Gaza — demands the Israeli government has
largely rejected at this stage — and a guaranteed continued flow of
humanitarian aid into the enclave.A source directly involved in the
negotiations told The Times of Israel that Hamas’s response included a
demand that would make it more difficult for Israel to resume fighting
if talks on a permanent ceasefire are not completed by the end of the
60-day truce. The updated proposal submitted by Hamas envisions the
release of the 10 hostages being spread out more throughout the 60-day
truce, rather than in two batches on the first and seventh day, as the
US offer envisioned. The source said this change was aimed at preventing
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from abandoning talks on a permanent
ceasefire after the 10 hostages are released or refusing to engage in
the talks altogether, as he did during the previous ceasefire in
January. An Israeli official told The Times of Israel that Hamas had also
requested a ceasefire lasting up to seven years. The Witkoff proposal
stipulates that the parties would have to reach an agreement on the
parameters of Israel’s partial withdrawal from Gaza during the 60-day
truce. It also provides for further negotiations during the truce on a
potential settlement to end the war.According to a copy of Witkoff’s
latest proposal, the authenticity of which was confirmed to The Times of
Israel by two sources familiar with the negotiations, Hamas would
release 10 living Israeli hostages held in Gaza and return the bodies of
18 deceased hostages during the 60-day ceasefire. In return, Israel
would release 125 Palestinian terror convicts serving life sentences,
1,111 Gazans detained since the start of the war on October 7, 2023, and
180 bodies of Palestinians currently held by Israel. The IDF would also
pull back from some areas where troops are currently deployed; the
parameters of the pullback would be finalized “during proximity
negotiations.”There are currently 58 hostages held in Gaza, including
the bodies of at least 35 confirmed dead by the IDF, and 20 hostages who
are believed to be alive. There are grave concerns for the well-being
of three others, Israeli officials have said.‘We will do everything so
it doesn’t happen again’Also Sunday, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal
Zamir met with the families of hostages who were killed or murdered in
Hamas captivity.“We are currently operating in areas where the
terrorists set out from [during the October 7 onslaught]. We will
operate to defeat Hamas and do everything so it doesn’t happen again,”
Zamir said during the meeting, in remarks published by the
IDF.“Returning the hostages is before my eyes and before the eyes of all
the IDF soldiers all the time, this is a top priority task, an exalted
and essential goal,” he continued.Zamir added that IDF operations in
Gaza are being carried out “in full coordination with [military’s]
Hostages and Missing Persons Headquarters [unit]. We will continue to
act to return the hostages and collapse Hamas’s rule.”The meeting was
held at the request of hostage families after Israel decided to expand
its offensive in Gaza in March, the Hostages and Missing Families Forum
said in a statement. In attendance were Merav Svirsky, sister of the late
Itay Svirsky; Esther Buchshtab, mother of the late Yagev Buchshtab; Jon
Polin, father of the late Hersh Goldberg-Polin; Katya Beizer, mother of
the late Nik Beizer; and Re’ut Even Tov, relative of the late Chaim
Peri.“We stressed that in our view, the only way to bring them back is
through an agreement, even at the cost of ending the war. We wanted to
speak out on behalf of those who are in Gaza. It is unbearable to think
that someone else will have to pay such a price — whether facing death
or disappearing forever,” a statement from the participants said.“We
sought to emphasize again that the war objectives presented to us by the
political leadership are conflicting and contradictory. We asked the
Chief of Staff and IDF commanders to continue clearly conveying to the
political leadership the mortal danger facing the hostages as a result
of military attacks.”Of the 206 hostages who were abducted alive by
Hamas-led terrorists on October 7, 2023, to Gaza, 37 died in the Strip.
The IDF’s own investigations have shown that some of the hostages were
killed by direct Israeli actions, while others were killed after the IDF
struck or approached their area or during botched rescue missions.
Sara
Netanyahu tells Fox News ‘deep state’ trying to target her husband-PM’s
wife claims radical elites backed by foreign interests are using courts
and media to undermine democracy in Israel-By ToI Staff Today, 2:05
pm-JUN 1,25
Sara Netanyahu, wife of Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu, has claimed a so-called “deep state” in Israel is working to
undermine her husband, drawing lines to similar forces in the US she
alleged have worked against President Donald Trump.Appearing on Fox
News’s “My View” with Lara Trump on Friday, Netanyahu alleged that both
leaders were being persecuted by what she described as “small radical
left-wing elites funded by foreign countries and others” who “hold
influential positions within key institutions.”Lara Trump is the wife of
Eric Trump, the president’s son.“These people abuse the judicial system
to try and overthrow a democratically elected government,” she said.
“They don’t care if they’re undermining democracy or public
trust.”Drawing a direct comparison between the legal cases against Trump
and those against the prime minister, she claimed: “They did the same
ridiculous things to my husband and family, bringing ridiculous
investigations and charges full of lies.”“These cases are now collapsing
in court because there’s no truth to them at all,” she
claimed.Netanyahu said her husband had even requested that his trial be
televised but was refused, adding that “people are still watching the
cases fall apart despite the deep state’s attempts.”The prime minister
is on trial in three corruption cases and faces accusations of trying to
illicitly sway press coverage through benefits to media moguls, as well
as of receiving gifts and benefits from billionaire
benefactors.Netanyahu denies wrongdoing and claims without evidence that
the charges were fabricated in a political coup led by the police and
state prosecution.Sara Netanyahu criticized the media’s role, saying it
had relentlessly targeted her family. “The media is so vicious,
attacking us again and again and again,” she said.Netanyahu very briefly
addressed the issue of the 58 Israeli hostages still held by Hamas in
Gaza, saying: “I live with the pain of the hostages and families every
day. I am deeply involved. I meet with them often, and I embrace them,
and hear them and support them.”She said she had appealed to
international figures for help in securing their release.“I have written
dozens of letters to the emir of Qatar’s mother, to the previous pope
and to the wives of world leaders on this issue. I even wrote a letter
together with five mothers of hostages,” she said. This is not the first
time that Sara Netanyahu has accused a supposed “deep state” of plotting
against her husband while speaking to foreign media. In April, she made
similar comments in an interview with right-wing Hungarian outlet
Mandiner during a state visit to Hungary.Prime Minister Netanyahu told
opposition lawmakers at the Knesset in March that “Democracy isn’t in
danger; the rule of bureaucrats is in danger. The deep state is in

SpaceX launches advanced GPS satellite for Space Force-by Doug Cunningham.
Washington
DC (UPI) May 30, 2025-On Friday, SpaceX launched an advanced GPS
satellite for the U.S. Space Force from Cape Canaveral Space Force
Station in Florida.A Falcon 9 rocket was used to put the GPS III SV-08
into orbit.According to SpaceX, prep work for the launch was done in
less than three days, a new record for U.S. national security
missions. Those preparations normally take 18-24 months.Space Force Col.
Jim Horne hailed the speed of the preparation. He said the launch
"highlights another instance of the Space Force's ability to complete
high-priority launches on a rapid timescale, which demonstrates the
capability to respond to emergent constellation needs as rapidly as
Space Vehicle readiness allows."In a pre-launch briefing Launch Weather
Officer Mark Burger said the weather outlook shows a 45% chance for
favorable weather for Friday's launch."We'll be looking at those cumulus
cloud violations and associated thunderstorms in and close to the pad,"
Burger said.GPS III satellite maker Lockheed Martin said the company
got notice to take the SV-08 satellite out of storage for the launch
Feb. 21.Despite the rapid launch schedule for this one, compared with
the SV-07 satellite it was less challenging, according to the
company."I'll say somewhat tongue-in-cheek, compared to SV-07, this was,
I'll say, a relatively less punishing path to launch, primarily because
of the challenges we faced on SV-07, whether it was ground
transportation or the RRT climate," Lockheed Martin vice president of
Navigations Systems Malik Musawwir said.Just preparing the satellite can
take four to five months due to the need for full integration of
components stored separately. Two more of the satellites are stored for
future launches using ULA Vulcan rockets with no plans to reassign them
to SpaceX.
Trump 'tough love' on defence better than no love: EU's Kallas.By Jan HENNOP.
Singapore
(AFP) May 31, 2025-The European Union's diplomatic chief Kaja Kallas
said Saturday the continent was beefing up defence spending after "tough
love" from the Trump administration, as she called for stronger ties to
counter China's "economic might".Speaking at the Shangri-La defence
forum in Singapore, Kallas was responding to comments by US Defense
Secretary Pete Hegseth, who called President Donald Trump's insistence
on more military spending "tough love"."It's love nonetheless, so it's
better than no love," Kallas quipped when asked later about Hegseth's
speech.Brussels' relationship with Washington was not broken, Kallas
stressed, saying she spoke to Hegseth on Friday."You heard his speech.
He was actually quite positive about Europe, so there's definitely some
love there," she said.Trump has consistently pressed NATO countries to
increase defence spending, asking for as much as five percent of GDP and
saying Washington will no longer tolerate freeloaders.Kallas said
"there are different countries in Europe and some of us have realised a
long time ago that we need to invest in defence"."The European Union has
shifted gear and reimagined our own paradigm as a peace project backed
up with hard defence," she said."It is a good thing we are doing more,
but what I want to stress is that the security of Europe and the
security of the Pacific is very much interlinked," she added.Kallas
pointed to Ukraine, where North Korean soldiers were already operating
and China was providing military hardware to Russia."There were some
very strong messages in the US secretary of defense speech regarding
China," Kallas said."I think again, if you are worried about China, you
should be worried about Russia," she said.Kallas said the EU wanted to
build "partnerships in our mutual interest" in the Indo-Pacific region,
including in the field of defence and economy. But the EU was also
bringing economic power to the table, she said.Kallas disagreed with
suggestions that Washington should focus on the Indo-Pacific region and
Europe concentrate on its own patch."I really think if you look at the
economic might of China, I think... the big countries or the superpowers
sometimes overestimate their own strength," she said.China's economic
dominance could only be tackled together with "like-minded partners like
the United States, like the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and
South Korea... and Singapore," said Kallas.Speaking earlier, Hegseth
told delegates "we're pushing our allies in Europe to own more of their
own security to invest in their defence"."Thanks to President Trump they
are stepping up," he said.Macron urges Asia, Europe to unite to resist
'spheres of coercion' Singapore (AFP) May 30, 2025 - French President
Emmanuel Macron on Friday urged Europe and Asia to build a new alliance
to hold off big powers seeking to build "spheres of coercion", in a
swipe at China and Russia.Macron was speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue
in Singapore, Asia's major annual defence and security conference, as
Russia defies diplomatic pressure for a ceasefire in Ukraine and
capitals fret about Beijing's growing assertiveness on Taiwan and the
South China Sea.Macron urged the international community to unite in the
face of countries seeking to grab territory and resources."We have a
challenge of revisionist countries that want to impose -- under the name
of spheres of influence -- spheres of coercion," Macron said."Countries
that want to control areas from the fringes of Europe to the
archipelagos in the South China Sea... that want to appropriate
resources, whether fishing or mineral and crowd out others for their
benefit."Defence chiefs and officials from around the world are
attending the annual forum that has in recent years become a barometer
of US-China relations.US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth will address
the conference on Saturday after President Donald Trump fired a fresh
salvo in his tariff battle with Beijing, which has roiled global money
markets. But unusually, China has not sent its defence minister to
Shangri-La, and will instead be represented by a senior officer from its
People's Liberation Army's National Defence University.Since 2019
Beijing has regularly sent its defence minister to the Shangri-La meet,
occasions that offered rare opportunities to hold face-to-face talks
with US counterparts.- 'Build a new alliance' -Macron's speech came at
the end of a tour of Vietnam, Indonesia and Singapore, which he used to
present France as a reliable alternative for a region caught between
Washington and Beijing.Asian countries have found themselves torn
between Washington's tariff threats on one hand and Beijing, a major
trading partner that has become increasingly forthright in territorial
disputes in the South China Sea.Tensions between Washington and Beijing
have ramped up since Trump returned to office in January, off the back
of an escalating trade standoff, intensified technological rivalry, and
strategic military posturing.Macron urged leaders at the conference to
"build a positive new alliance between Europe and Asia, based on our
common norms, on our common principles"."Our shared responsibility is to
ensure with others that our countries are not collateral victims of the
imbalances linked to the choices made by the superpowers," he
said.Macron urged China to stop its ally North Korea from sending forces
to help Russia's war in Ukraine if Beijing "doesn't want NATO being
involved in Southeast Asia or in Asia".He warned Asian leaders against
seeing the war in Ukraine as a distant problem with no relevance to
them."If we consider that Russia could be allowed to take a part of the
territory of Ukraine without any restriction, without any constraint,
without any reaction of the global order, how would you phrase what
could happen in Taiwan?" he said."What would you do the day something
happens in the Philippines?"- 'Kill our credibility' -Macron also
weighed in on the war in Gaza, warning that abandoning the shattered
Palestinian enclave would kill the West's credibility with the rest of
the world."If we abandon Gaza, if we consider there is a free pass for
Israel, even if we do condemn the terrorist attacks, we will kill our
credibility," he said. His comments came as Israel accused him of
undertaking a "crusade against the Jewish state" after he called for
European countries to harden their stance on Israel if the humanitarian
situation in Gaza did not improve.Beyond the conflicts in Gaza and
Ukraine, the recent clashes between India and Pakistan will lurk in the
shadows of the conference, which runs until Sunday. An April 22 attack on
tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir triggered some of the worst
cross-border clashes between the nuclear-armed neighbours in years, with
at least 70 people killed.Muslim-majority Kashmir is claimed in full by
both countries, which have fought multiple wars over the Himalayan
territory since their 1947 independence from Britain.New Delhi accused
Pakistan of backing the attack, a charge Islamabad denies.Neither side
has sent their defence ministers, instead dispatching senior military
delegations. No meeting between the two sides has been announced.
Iran considers nuclear weapons 'unacceptable', FM says-By Ahmad PARHIZI.
Tehran
(AFP) May 31, 2025-Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Saturday that
Iran considers nuclear weapons "unacceptable," reaffirming the country's
longstanding position amid delicate negotiations with the United
States.Western governments have long suspected Iran of seeking to
develop a nuclear weapons capability to counter the widely suspected but
undeclared arsenal of its arch-foe, Israel."If the issue is nuclear
weapons, yes, we too consider this type of weapon unacceptable,"
Araghchi, Iran's lead negotiator in the talks, said in a televised
speech. "We agree with them on this issue."Araghchi's remarks came a day
after US President Donald Trump said Iran "cannot have a nuclear
weapon", while expressing hope of striking a deal soon.On Thursday,
Araghchi hit out at what he called "media speculation" that the two
sides were close to an agreement, saying he was "not sure if" a deal is
"imminent".Iran has held five rounds of talks with the United States in
search of a new agreement to replace the deal with major powers that
Trump abandoned during his first term in 2018.No date or venue has yet
been announced for the next round but Araghchi said Wednesday he
expected an announcement from mediator Oman in the "next few days".The
two governments are at odds over Iran's uranium enrichment programme,
which Washington has said must cease, but which Tehran insists is its
right under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.- 'Very good talks'
-Nonetheless, Trump said Wednesday that "we're having some very good
talks with Iran", adding that he had warned Israeli Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu against striking its nuclear facilities as it would
not be "appropriate right now".Israel has repeatedly threatened military
action, after pummelling Iranian air defences during two exchanges of
fire last year.Trump has not ruled out military action but said he wants
space to make a deal first, and has also said that Israel, and not the
United States, would take the lead in any such strikes.Trump adopted a
"maximum pressure" policy against Tehran after abandoning the 2015
agreement and reimposed the sweeping sanctions which the deal had lifted
in return for UN-monitored restrictions on Iran's nuclear
activities.Iran continued to honour the agreement for a year, but then
began rolling back its own compliance with its terms.Iran has since
built up the largest stockpile of highly enriched uranium of any state
without a nuclear arsenal. The uranium is enriched to 60 percent, still
short of the 90 percent threshold needed for a nuclear warhead but far
beyond the 3.67 percent limit set by the 2015 agreement. In recent days,
Tehran has said that if a deal is reached, it may consider allowing US
inspectors to join the teams from the UN nuclear watchdog monitoring
compliance with its terms.Nuclear chief Mohammad Eslami said Iran "will
reconsider accepting American inspectors through the (International
Atomic Energy) Agency" if "an agreement is reached and Iran's demands
are taken into account".
Iran boosts highly enriched uranium production: IAEABy Kiyoko METZLER with Ahmad PARHIZI in Tehran.
Vienna
(AFP) May 31, 2025-Iran has ramped up production of highly enriched
uranium, according to a confidential UN watchdog report, as Tehran said
Saturday that it had received US proposals to settle its long-running
nuclear dispute with the West.Iran rejected the report by the
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the latest move in years-long
efforts to restrict its nuclear activities over fears that it is
seeking to develop nuclear weapons. The IAEA report, seen by AFP, said
Iran had sharply increased its stockpile of uranium enriched to up to 60
percent, close to the roughly 90 percent level needed for atomic
weapons.Iran rejected the report, which came amid high tensions in the
Middle East over Israel's military offensive in Gaza, with Tehran's
foreign ministry calling it a "political" manoeuvre. The ministry accused
Israel of providing "unreliable and misleading information" to the IAEA
for the report, "contrary to the IAEA's principles of professional
verification".Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said earlier
Saturday that he had received "elements" of a US proposal for a
potential nuclear deal following five rounds of talks mediated by
Oman.Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi "paid a short visit to
Tehran today to present elements of a US proposal which will be
appropriately responded to in line with the principles, national
interests and rights of the people of Iran," Araghchi said on X.The IAEA
report said Iran had an estimated 408.6 kilogrammes of uranium enriched
to up to 60 percent as of May 17, up by 133.8 kilogrammes since the
last report in February.Iran's total amount of enriched uranium now
exceeds 45 times the limit authorised by the 2015 agreement with world
powers, and is estimated at 9,247.6 kilogrammes."The significantly
increased production and accumulation of highly enriched uranium by
Iran, the only non-nuclear weapon State to produce such nuclear
material, is of serious concern," the IAEA said.In a separate in-depth
report, the IAEA criticised "less than satisfactory" cooperation from
Tehran over its scrutiny of its nuclear programme, specifically noting
Iran's lack of progress in explaining nuclear material found at
undeclared sites.- Iran says nuclear arms 'unacceptable' -Western
governments have long suspected Iran of seeking to develop a nuclear
weapons capability to counter the widely suspected but undeclared
arsenal of its arch-foe Israel.Iran has denied seeking nuclear arms and
says it needs the uranium for civilian power production.Following the
IAEA report, Israel on Saturday accused Iran of being "totally
determined" to acquire nuclear weapons."Such a level of enrichment
exists only in countries actively pursuing nuclear weapons and has no
civilian justification whatsoever," a statement from Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu's office said.In response, Araghchi reaffirmed the
country's longstanding position, saying Tehran rejected nuclear
weapons."If the issue is nuclear weapons, yes, we too consider this type
of weapon unacceptable," Araghchi, Iran's lead negotiator in the talks,
said in a televised speech. "We agree with them on this

Iran warns of retaliation if Europeans 'exploit' UN nuclear report.
Tehran,
June 1 (AFP) Jun 01, 2025-Iran on Sunday warned it would retaliate if
European powers that have threatened to reimpose nuclear sanctions
"exploit" a UN report showing Tehran has stepped up production of highly
enriched uranium. The report by the International Atomic Energy Agency
said Iran had sharply increased its stockpile of uranium enriched to up
to 60 percent, close to the roughly 90 percent level needed for atomic
weapons.Iran's total amount of enriched uranium now exceeds 45 times the
limit authorised by a landmark 2015 agreement with world powers, and is
estimated at 9,247.6 kilograms, according to the confidential IAEA
report seen by AFP.Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in a
statement he had told IAEA chief Rafael Grossi in a phone call that
"Iran will respond to any inappropriate action by the European parties"
to the 2015 agreement, referring to Britain, France and Germany. The
European trio have warned they could reimpose sanctions if they deemed
Iran's nuclear programme a threat to the continent's security.Araghchi
urged Grossi in their Saturday call to stop "parties from exploiting"
the nuclear watchdog report "to advance their political objectives",
according to the statement. The IAEA Board of Governors is set to review
Iran's nuclear activities in its upcoming quarterly meeting in Vienna
starting June 9.Iran rejected the IAEA report, the latest move in
years-long efforts to restrict its nuclear activities over fears that it
is seeking to develop nuclear weapons. The Islamic republic has denied
seeking nuclear arms and says it needs the uranium for civilian power
production. The report was leaked as Iran and the United States have been
engaged in negotiations towards a new nuclear deal, after Washington
had unilaterally abandoned the agreement between Tehran and world powers
in 2018, during President Donald Trump's first term.- US proposal
-Araghchi said on Saturday that he had received "elements" of a US
proposal for a potential nuclear deal following five rounds of talks
mediated by Oman.Iran would respond "in line with the principles,
national interests and rights" of its people, Araghchi added in a post
on X.White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that the United
States "has sent a detailed and acceptable proposal to the Iranian
regime, and it's in their best interest to accept it", the New York
Times reported. The proposal was described as a series of bullet points
rather than a full draft, according to the New York Times, citing
officials familiar with the diplomatic exchanges. It calls on Iran to
stop all enrichment of uranium and proposes creating a regional grouping
to produce nuclear power, which would include Iran, Saudi Arabia and
other Arab states, as well as the United States.Trump adopted a "maximum
pressure" policy against Tehran after withdrawing from the 2015
agreement and reimposed sweeping sanctions which the deal had lifted in
return for UN-monitored restrictions on Iran's nuclear activities.Iran
has ramped up its nuclear activities since the collapse of the deal, and
is now enriching uranium to 60 percent -- far above the deal's 3.67
percent cap but below the 90 percent needed for weapons-grade
material. The 2015 deal provides for the possibility of UN sanctions
being reimposed through a mechanism called "snapback" if Iran fails to
fulfil its commitments, an option that expires in October.ap/sbr/ami/dv
UK to restore 'war-fighting readiness' with new defence review.
London,
June 1 (AFP) Jun 01, 2025-UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Sunday he
will "restore Britain's war-fighting readiness" as his government
warned of "growing" Russian aggression ahead of a major defence strategy
review."We will restore Britain's war-fighting readiness as the central
purpose of our armed forces," Starmer wrote in The Sun daily, including
by ramping up weapons production capacity. His government's Strategic
Defence Review, due to be published Monday, will assess threats facing
the UK, amid Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine and pressure from US
President Donald Trump for NATO allies to bolster their own
defences.Starmer wrote that It will serve as "a blueprint for strength
and security for decades to come".Defence Secretary John Healey warned
of "growing Russian aggression", including through "daily" cyberattacks
on the UK's "defence system"."We're in a world that is changing now...
and it is a world of growing threats," Healey told the BBC on
Sunday."It's growing Russian aggression. It's those daily cyberattacks,
it's new nuclear risks, and it's increasing tension in other parts of
the world as well."The defence review will recommend "creating an
'always on' munitions production capacity in the UK" allowing the
scaling up of weapons production if needed, according to the Ministry of
Defence. The document also urges the government to create conditions in
industry to boost munition stockpiles. In February, Starmer committed to
hiking defence spending to 2.5 percent of GDP by 2027, up from its
current 2.3 percent, and to further raise it to three percent by around
2029.His Labour administration has said it would cut UK overseas aid to
help fund the spending.- New technologies -On Saturday the government
announced pound1.5 billion ($2 billion) for building "at least six
munitions and energetics factories" as well as procuring 7,000
domestically built long-range weapons. This investment -- which will see
pound6 billion spent on munitions under the current parliament -- would
create and support 1,800 jobs."We are strengthening the UK's industrial
base to better deter our adversaries and make the UK secure at home and
strong abroad," Healey said. The Ministry of Defence also pledged pound1
billion for the creation of a "cyber command" to help on the
battlefield. The defence shake-up "means bringing together every
capability we have, from drones, to artillery, to human instinct and
intelligence, into one formidable, integrated fighting machine," Starmer
said. The review, led by former NATO secretary general George Robertson,
warns that Britain is entering "a new era of threat" as drones and
artificial intelligence transform modern warfare, The Guardian newspaper
reported Saturday. The document will describe the "immediate and
pressing" danger posed by Russia, as well as focusing on China, Iran and
North Korea.Robertson has described the four countries as a "deadly
quartet" which were "increasingly working together".
Ukraine strikes Russian bombers ahead of Istanbul talks.
Kyiv,
Ukraine, June 1 (AFP) Jun 01, 2025-Ukraine said Sunday it launched a
"large-scale" attack to destroy Russian bombers as it geared up for
talks in Istanbul with Moscow counterparts to explore prospects of a
ceasefire. The spectacular claim that Ukraine damaged $2 billion worth of
Russian aircraft parked at airbases thousands of kilometres (miles)
away came as Kyiv announced a Russian military strike killed at least 12
soldiers at an army training site, leading to the resignation of its
ground forces commander.Russia also said two bridges that collapsed in
regions bordering Ukraine were brought down by explosions. Officials
were treating them as "acts of terrorism" but had not immediately
accused Ukraine. The developments followed Russian ground advances in
recent days in Ukraine's border Sumy region and both sides unleashing
punishing aerial attacks on the other.President Volodymyr Zelensky said
on Sunday that he was sending a Ukrainian delegation to Istanbul led by
his Defence Minister Rustem Umerov for the talks on Monday with Russian
officials.Turkey is hosting the meeting, which was spurred by US
President Donald Trump's push for a quick deal to end the three-year
war.Zelensky, who previously voiced scepticism about the seriousness of
the Russian side in proposing Monday's meeting, said he had defined the
Ukrainian delegation's position going into it.Priorities included "a
complete and unconditional ceasefire" and the return of prisoners and
abducted children, he said on social media.Russia has said it has
formulated its own peace terms but refused to divulge them in advance.
Russian President Vladimir Putin ruled out a Turkish proposal for the
meeting to be held at leaders' level.Russian news agencies said the
Russian delegation was headed to Istanbul on Sunday for the talks.-
Drone attacks inside Russia -The intensified strikes waged by each side
came as Kyiv and Moscow each strived to show themselves coming from a
position of strength.A source with Ukraine's SBU security service said
the coordinated attacks inside Russia were "aimed at destroying enemy
bombers far from the front".The source said Russian airbases in the
eastern Siberian city of Belaya, in Olenya, up in the Arctic near
Finland, and in Ivanovo and Dyagilevo, both east of Moscow, had been
targeted.More than 40 aircraft had been hit at the Belaya base, and a
fire had broken out there, the source said, showing a video in which
several aircraft could be seen in flames and black smoke rising.AFP was
not able to independently verify the claims or the video images.Russia's
defence ministry confirmed on Telegram that several of its military
aircraft "caught fire", adding that there were no casualties and that
several "participants" had been arrested.Igor Kobzev, Governor of
Russia's Irkutsk region, which hosts the targeted Belaya airbase, said
"it's the first attack of this sort in Siberia".He called on the
population to not panic and posted an amateur video apparently showing a
drone flying in the sky and a large cloud of grey smoke. The governor of
the Murmansk region where the Olenya base was located, Andrey Chibis,
also said "enemy drones" were flying overhead, and anti-aircraft
defences were operating.Russia has been announcing Ukrainian drone
attacks on a near daily basis, usually saying they had all been shot
down. But it was rare for such drone strikes to be reported so deep
within its territory. At the same time, Russia has been carrying out
constant attacks on Ukraine. On Sunday, Ukraine's air force said it was
hit by 472 Russian drones and seven missiles overnight -- a record since
the beginning of the invasion. In a rare admission of its military
losses, the Ukraine army said Russia's "missile strike on the location
of one of the training units" had killed a dozen soldiers, most of whom
had been in shelters during the attack."As of 12:50 pm (0950 GMT), 12
people are known to have been killed and more than 60 wounded," it
said. The attack led Ukrainian ground forces commander Mykhailo Drapaty
to announce his resignation, saying he felt "responsibility" for the
soldiers' deaths.- Blasts fell bridges -Separately on Sunday, the
Russian army said it had captured another village in Ukraine's northern
Sumy region, where Kyiv fears Moscow could mount a fresh ground
assault.Russia claims to have captured several settlements in the region
in recent weeks, and has amassed more than 50,000 soldiers on the other
side of the border, according to Zelensky.Authorities in the region
have evacuated more than 200 villages amid intensified shelling.Back in
Russia, officials said a blast brought down a road bridge in the Bryansk
region bordering Ukraine on Saturday, derailing a passenger train
heading to Moscow and killing seven people.A separate rail bridge in the
neighbouring Kursk region was blown up hours later in the early hours
of Sunday, derailing a freight train and injuring the driver.Authorities
did not say who was behind the explosions, but investigators said a
criminal inquiry was underway.
Iraq condemns 'repeated Israeli attacks' on Lebanon.
Baghdad,
June 1 (AFP) Jun 01, 2025-Iraq's Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani
on Sunday condemned Israeli attacks on Lebanon as he hosted Lebanese
President Joseph Aoun, on his first visit to Baghdad since taking
office.Israel has continued to strike Lebanon despite a November
ceasefire that ended more than a year of conflict -- including two
months of open war -- with militant group Hezbollah, which emerged
severely weakened.Lebanese authorities reported on Sunday the third
deadly Israeli raid on the country's south in four days.In a joint press
conference with Aoun, Sudani denounced "repeated Israeli attacks
against Lebanon's sovereignty" which he said were in "violation of
international law".The Iraqi prime minister called to "fully implement" a
UN Security Council resolution that ended a 2006 war between Israel and
Iran-backed Hezbollah and served as the basis for the latest truce,
which went into effect on November 27.Under the truce terms, Hezbollah
fighters were to withdraw north of the Litani River, about 30 kilometres
(19 miles) from the border, and dismantle their military posts to the
south.Israel, for its part, was to pull all its troops out of Lebanon
but has maintained five positions it deems "strategic" along the
frontier.Sudani also said he discussed with the visiting Lebanese
president "shared opportunities in various sectors" including energy,
telecommunications and commerce.Dominated by pro-Iranian parties, the
Iraqi government has close ties with Lebanon and welcomed thousands of
Lebanese people, mostly Shiite Muslims, displaced by the 2024
Israel-Hezbollah war.Tehran-aligned armed factions in Iraq are staunch
allies of Lebanon's Shiite militant group Hezbollah.Since 2021, gas-rich
Iraq has provided fuel for power stations in Lebanon, mired in a grave
economic crisis.Last month Beirut said it was expecting a delivery of
320,000 tons of wheat from Iraq.In Baghdad, Aoun expressed his gratitude
for "all the support and donations" Iraq has given Lebanon.Aoun, who
assumed the presidency in January, also met with his Iraqi counterpart
Abdel Latif Rashid.

a distant problem with no relevance to them."If we consider that Russia
could be allowed to take a part of the territory of Ukraine without any
restriction, without any constraint, without any reaction of the global
order, how would you phrase what could happen in Taiwan?" he said."What
would you do the day something happens in the Philippines?"- 'Kill our
credibility' -Macron also weighed in on the war in Gaza, warning that
abandoning the shattered Palestinian enclave would kill the West's
credibility with the rest of the world."If we abandon Gaza, if we
consider there is a free pass for Israel, even if we do condemn the
terrorist attacks, we will kill our credibility," he said. His comments
came as Israel accused him of undertaking a "crusade against the Jewish
state" after he called for European countries to harden their stance on
Israel if the humanitarian situation in Gaza did not improve.Beyond the
conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine, the recent clashes between India and
Pakistan will lurk in the shadows of the conference, which runs until
Sunday. An April 22 attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir
triggered some of the worst cross-border clashes between the
nuclear-armed neighbours in years, with at least 70 people
killed.Muslim-majority Kashmir is claimed in full by both countries,
which have fought multiple wars over the Himalayan territory since their
1947 independence from Britain.New Delhi accused Pakistan of backing
the attack, a charge Islamabad denies.Neither side has sent their
defence ministers, instead dispatching senior military delegations. No
meeting between the two sides has been announced.
Recycling contaminated soil from Fukushima: Japan's dilemma.
Iitate,
Japan, June 1 (AFP) Jun 01, 2025-To reduce radiation across Japan's
northern Fukushima region after the 2011 nuclear disaster, authorities
scraped a layer of contaminated soil from swathes of land. Now, as young
farmers seek to bring life back to the region once known for its
delicious fruit, authorities are deliberating what to do with the mass
of removed soil -- enough to fill more than 10 baseball stadiums. Here
are some key things to know:- Why was the soil removed? -On March 11,
2011, Japan's strongest earthquake on record triggered a huge tsunami
that hit the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, causing a devastating
meltdown.Topsoil was collected as part of large-scale decontamination
efforts that also included blasting buildings and roads with
high-pressure jets of water.Almost all areas of Fukushima have gradually
been declared safe, but many evacuees have been reluctant to return
because they remain worried about radiation, or have fully resettled
elsewhere.Fukushima has, however, welcomed new residents such as
25-year-old kiwi farmer Takuya Haraguchi."I want people to become
interested in and learn about what Fukushima is really like these days,"
he told AFP.- Where is the soil being stored? -A vast quantity of soil
-- 14 million cubic metres -- is being stored at interim storage
facilities near the Fukushima Daiichi plant. The government has promised
residents of Fukushima region that it will find permanent storage for
the soil elsewhere in the country by 2045.For now, the huge mounds are
kept inside guarded grounds, protected by layers of clean soil and a
manmade sheet to prevent runoff into the environment.- What will Japan
do with it? -The government wants to use the soil for building road and
railway embankments among other projects. It has vowed to do this outside
Fukushima to avoid further burdening the region, where the crippled
nuclear plant generated electricity not for local residents, but for
Tokyo and its surrounding urban areas. So far few takers have been found
in other parts of Japan, and some local officials suggest that
realistically, a portion of the soil may need to stay in Fukushima. The
prime minister's office recently said it would symbolically recycle some
of the soil to show it is safe, with reports saying it will be used in
flower beds.- How safe is the soil? -Around 75 percent of the stored
soil has a radioactivity level equivalent to or less than one X-ray per
year for people who directly stand on or work with it, according to the
environment ministry.Asphalt, farm soil or layers of other materials
should be used to seal in the radioactivity, said Akira Asakawa, a
ministry official working on the Fukushima soil project. In a test, the
government has constructed roads and fields in Fukushima by using the
contaminated soil as filling material. Those locations did not show
elevated levels of radioactivity, and there was no runoff of radioactive
material to surrounding areas, Asakawa said.- What pushback has there
been? -In 2022, local communities reacted angrily to plans floated by
the national government to bring the Fukushima soil to a popular park in
Tokyo and other areas near the capital. That plan has not moved forward
and other locations have not yet been secured, despite public sympathy
for the people of Fukushima. The environment ministry says it will step
up efforts to explain the safety of its plan to the public from this
year.
Pentagon chief warns China is 'preparing' to use military force in Asia By Ty McCormick and Isabel Kua
Singapore
(AFP) May 31, 2025-US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth on Saturday
warned that China was "credibly preparing" to use military force to
upend the balance of power in Asia -- remarks that earned a sharp rebuke
from Beijing. The Pentagon chief was speaking at an annual security
forum in Singapore, as the administration of US President Donald Trump
spars with Beijing on trade, technology, and influence over strategic
corners of the globe.China's foreign ministry blasted the speech, saying
it had "lodged solemn representations with the US side" over Hegseth's
comments and taking particular exception to his remarks about
Taiwan.Trump has launched a trade war with China since taking office in
January, sought to curb its access to key AI technologies and deepened
security ties with allies such as the Philippines, which is engaged in
escalating territorial disputes with Beijing."The threat China poses is
real and it could be imminent," Hegseth said at the Shangri-La Dialogue,
attended by defence officials from around the world.Beijing is
"credibly preparing to potentially use military force to alter the
balance of power in the Indo-Pacific", he said.Hegseth warned that the
Chinese military was building the capabilities to invade Taiwan and
"rehearsing for the real deal".China has ramped up military pressure on
Taiwan and held large-scale exercises around the self-governed
democratic island that are often described as preparations for a
blockade or invasion. The United States was "reorienting toward deterring
aggression by communist China", Hegseth said, calling on US allies and
partners in Asia to swiftly upgrade their defences in the face of
mounting threats. In Beijing, the foreign ministry said: "The US should
not try to use the Taiwan issue as a bargaining chip to contain China
and must not play with fire."- 'Stirring up trouble' -Hegseth described
China's conduct as a "wake-up call", accusing Beijing of endangering
lives with cyber attacks, harassing its neighbours, and "illegally
seizing and militarising lands" in the disputed South China Sea.Beijing
claims almost the entire waterway, through which more than 60 percent of
global maritime trade passes, despite an international ruling that its
assertion has no merit. It has clashed repeatedly with the Philippines in
the strategic waters in recent months, with the flashpoint set to
dominate discussions at the Singapore forum, according to US
officials. As Hegseth spoke in Singapore, China's military announced that
its navy and air force were carrying out routine "combat readiness
patrols" around the Scarborough Shoal, a chain of reefs and rocks
Beijing disputes with the Philippines.Beijing did not send any top
defence ministry officials to the summit, dispatching instead a
delegation from the People's Liberation Army National Defence University
led by Rear Admiral Hu Gangfeng.Without referring to Hegseth by name,
Hu said of his speech that "these actions are essentially about stirring
up trouble, creating division, inciting confrontation, and
destabilising the Asia-Pacific".Hegseth's comments came after Trump
stoked new trade tensions with China, arguing that Beijing had
"violated" a deal to de-escalate tariffs as the two sides appeared
deadlocked in negotiations. The world's two biggest economies had agreed
to temporarily lower eye-watering tariffs they had imposed on each
other, pausing them for 90 days.- 'Cannot dominate' -Reassuring US
allies on Saturday, Hegseth said the Asia-Pacific region was "America's
priority theatre", pledging to ensure "China cannot dominate us -- or
our allies and partners".He said the United States had stepped up
cooperation with allies including the Philippines and Japan, and
reiterated Trump's vow that "China will not invade (Taiwan) on his
watch".However, he called on US partners in the region to ramp up
spending on their militaries and "quickly upgrade their own
defences"."Asian allies should look to countries in Europe for a
newfound example," Hegseth said, citing pledges by NATO members
including Germany to move towards Trump's defence spending target of
five percent of GDP."Deterrence doesn't come on the cheap."
China rebukes Macron's comparison of Ukraine and Taiwan.
Singapore
(AFP) May 31, 2025 - China hit back at French President Emmanuel Macron
on Saturday for drawing a connection between the Ukraine conflict and
the fate of Taiwan, saying the two issues are "different in nature, and
not comparable at all"."Comparing the Taiwan question with the Ukraine
issue is unacceptable," China's embassy in Singapore said on social
media, a day after Macron warned Asian defence officials in Singapore
not to view Russia's invasion of Ukraine as a far-away problem."If we
consider that Russia could be allowed to take a part of the territory of
Ukraine without any restriction, without any constraint, without any
reaction of the global order, how would you phrase what could happen in
Taiwan?" Macron told the Shangri-La Dialogue, Asia's premier annual
security forum."What would you do the day something happens in the
Philippines?"China's embassy fired back that the "Taiwan question is
entirely China's internal affair. There is but one China in the world,
and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory."While Taiwan
considers itself a sovereign nation, China has said it will not rule out
using force to bring it under its control.US Secretary of Defense Pete
Hegseth warned Saturday at the same forum in Singapore that China was
"credibly preparing" to use military force to upend the balance of power
in Asia, adding the Chinese military was building the capabilities to
invade Taiwan and "rehearsing for the real deal".
China says US 'should not play with fire' on Taiwan, slams Hegseth.
Beijing
(AFP) May 31, 2025 - China on Sunday warned the United States it
"should not play with fire" over Taiwan and said it had lodged
"representations" with Washington over comments made by Pentagon chief
Pete Hegseth at a summit in Singapore. The US secretary of defence used
his speech at an annual security forum on Saturday to warn that China
was "credibly preparing" to use military force to upend the balance of
power in Asia.He added that the Chinese military was building the
capabilities to invade Taiwan and "rehearsing for the real deal".In a
statement released just after midnight, China's foreign ministry said it
had "lodged solemn representations with the US side" over Hegseth's
comments, adding that it "strongly deplores" his remarks."The US should
not try to use the Taiwan issue as a bargaining chip to contain China
and should not play with fire," it said.Beijing, which did not send its
defence minister Dong Jun to the Singapore summit, called the "Taiwan
issue" China's "internal affair" and said foreign countries had no right
to interfere.China considers the self-ruled democratic island as its
territory and has not ruled out using force to take control of
it.Hegseth also accused Beijing of "illegally seizing and militarising
lands" in the disputed South China Sea.Beijing claims almost the entire
waterway, despite an international ruling that its assertion has no
merit. The foreign ministry on Sunday claimed there had "never been any
issue" with navigation in the waterway.China "is committed to
safeguarding its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and
interests in accordance with the law", a ministry spokesperson
said.Beijing also accused the United States of turning the Indo-Pacific
region into a "powder keg" by deploying weapons in the South China Sea.
India defence chief says jet downed in Pakistan conflict-by AFP Staff Writers.
Singapore
(AFP) May 31, 2025-India's defence chief on Saturday appeared to
confirm his country had lost at least one aircraft during the brief
conflict with Pakistan earlier this month, he told Bloomberg in an
interview.India and Pakistan were engaged in a four-day conflict this
month, their worst standoff since 1999, before a ceasefire was agreed on
May 10.More than 70 people were killed in missile, drone and artillery
fire on both sides.Pakistan claimed its Chinese-supplied jets had shot
down six Indian aircraft.India's chief of defence staff, General Anil
Chauhan, called Pakistan's claims that it shot down six Indian warplanes
"absolutely incorrect".But Chauhan, when pressed as to whether India
had lost any jets, appeared to confirm New Delhi had lost an unspecified
number of aircraft -- without giving details."I think, what is
important is that, not the jet being down, but why they were being
down," he told Bloomberg TV, speaking on the sidelines of Shangri-La
Dialogue defence meeting in Singapore. There was no immediate response
from New Delhi. On May 11, a day after the ceasefire, India's Air Marshal
A.K. Bharti, speaking to reporters, had said that "all our pilots are
back home", adding that "we are in a combat scenario, and that losses
are a part of combat".A senior security source told AFP three Indian
jets had crashed on home soil without giving the make or cause. But until
the comments on Saturday, India had not officially confirmed any of its
aircraft were lost."The good part is that we are able to understand the
tactical mistake which we made, remedy it, rectify it, and then
implement it again after two days and flew all our jets, again targeting
at long range," Chauhan added, speaking to Bloomberg."Why they were
down -- that is more important for us, and what did we do after that",
he added. The recent conflict between the nuclear-armed rivals was
triggered by an attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir on
April 22, the deadliest on civilians in the contested Muslim-majority
territory in decades.New Delhi blamed Islamabad for backing the Islamist
militants it said carried out the attack, charges that Pakistan denied.
ISIS claims responsibility for 2 bomb explosions in Syria by Mike Heuer.
Washington
DC (UPI) May 31, 2025-The Islamic State claimed responsibility for two
bomb attacks in a remote region in southern Syria on Wednesday and
Thursday. The twin bombings mark the first time ISIS has attacked the new
Syrian government that took power in December and occurred in the
remote Sweida Province.ISIS posted two online statements on Thursday
claiming responsibility for the bombings that killed and wounded Syrian
soldiers and militia members who are allied with the Syrian government,
The New York Times reported. An attack occurred on Wednesday and struck a
Syrian Army reconnaissance group that was tracking ISIS activities in
the remote desert area, CNN reported. Those wounded in that attack are
members of the Syrian Army's 70th Division, and the man who died was
assisting the soldiers, according to The New York Times.ISIS used a
remote-controlled land mine to target the vehicle in which they were
traveling, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights
announced. That attack occurred in the eastern portion of the Sweida
Province and was the first attack carried out by ISIS and targeting
forces allied with the new Syrian government.A second bombing occurred
on Thursday in the same region, according to news reports and ISIS.ISIS
said it killed and injured seven soldiers for the "apostate Syrian
regime" by using an explosive device on a road in the Talul al Safa area
in the Suwayda province in southern Syria, Al Jazeera reported. Both
attacks occurred near Sweida in southern Syria, which is a mountainous
desert area in which ISIS has operated for many years.Neither the Syrian
government nor the Free Syrian Army has commented on either bombing. The
United States backs the Free Syrian Army, which operates in the Sweida
region's al Tanf Deconfliction Zone that is located near Syria's borders
with Jordan. The United States maintains a small outpost in the
area.ISIS also has operated in the area for a long time due to its
"extremely rugged and dangerous" terrain, CNN reported.Earlier this
month, U.S. President Donald Trump said he he was lifting "crippling"
U.S. sanctions on Syria originally imposed to block flows of money into
Syria, including aid, to put pressure on the brutal regime of ousted
President Bashar al-Assad.He met with the country's transitional leader,
President Ahmed al-Sharaa, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on May14.Al-Sharaa,
who was appointed president in January, has promised to hold elections
once a new constitution is in place in around four years.
Anti-aircraft missiles fire as drones fly over Port Sudan: witnesses by AFP Staff Writers.
Port
Sudan, Sudan (AFP) May 31, 2025-Anti-aircraft missiles fired over
Sudan's wartime capital Port Sudan on Saturday, eyewitnesses reported,
as drones flew over the once-safe haven city.Since April 2023, war has
raged between Sudan's regular army and the paramilitary Rapid Support
Forces.Port Sudan, seat of the army-backed government, came under attack
by drones blamed on the RSF for the first time early this month. The
campaign of drone strikes attacked infrastructure including the
country's last functioning civilian international airport, power
stations and major fuel depots. The near-daily strikes had stopped for
over a week until Saturday, when residents in the city heard "the sound
of anti-aircraft missiles north and west of the city and drones flying
in the sky", one witness told AFP.Since Sudanese authorities fled the
capital Khartoum early in the war, Port Sudan has hosted government
ministries, the United Nations and hundreds of thousands of
people.Nearly all aid into the country -- home to nearly 25 million
people suffering dire food insecurity -- transits through Port Sudan. The
war has killed tens of thousands, uprooted 13 million and created what
the UN describes as the world's largest hunger and displacement
crises. It has also effectively split Sudan in two, with the army holding
the centre, east and north, while the paramilitaries and their allies
control nearly all of Darfur and parts of the south.Since losing
Khartoum in March, the RSF has adopted a two-pronged strategy:
long-range drone strikes on army-held cities accompanied by
counteroffensives to reclaim territory in the country's south. The drone
strikes have impacted infrastructure across Sudan's army-held northeast,
with attacks on power stations causing blackouts for millions of
people.A blackout in Khartoum also cut off access to clean water,
according to health authorities, causing a cholera outbreak that has
killed close to 300 people this month.

Meet the First Deacons Ordained in Rome Under Pope Leo’s Pontificate
Scottish
soon-to-be priests Matthew McCafferty and Kieran Burt reflect on
meeting the new Holy Father — and following in his missionary-minded
footsteps.Bénédicte Cedergren Vatican-June 1, 2025
ROME — Six
years after arriving to Rome from Scotland to study for the priesthood,
Matthew McCafferty and Kieran Burt were ordained deacons in the papal
Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls on May 10. Though ordained
together, each had a different journey leading up to that momentous
day.And soon afterward, they met Pope Leo XIV. Both deacons explained
that their ordination happening back-to-back with the election of a new
Pope created “a real spiritual high” — especially since they had prayed
and studied for so long.“I have, for as long as I can remember, thought
about becoming a priest,” Deacon Kieran Burt, 24, a deacon for the
Diocese of Motherwell, told the Register. “It was nothing sort of real
or concrete at first,” he added. “I just quite liked fancy vestments,
and I liked the music.” After years of altar serving and active
involvement in his parish, he couldn’t shake his thoughts about the
priesthood. With the help of his parish priest, who also happened to be a
vocations director, now-Deacon Burt was able to explore “what this
feeling [he] had might actually be and whether it could be a call” and
eventually applied to seminary. For Deacon McCafferty, the journey
towards priesthood began during his university studies. Upon returning
home to Scotland after spending a semester in New Jersey, where he
witnessed the vibrancy of U.S. Catholic students’ faith, McCafferty felt
pulled toward the Church.“I joined the Catholic society during my last
year at university and started going to Mass every day,” Deacon
McCafferty, 31, from the Archdiocese of St. Andrews and Edinburgh, told
the Register.“I remember reading an article that summer between coming
back from the States and going into my last year at university which
talked about going to daily Mass and how if you make the time for it,
the rest of your day kind of falls into place. I found that to be
demonstrably true.”“That did change my life,” Deacon McCafferty said.
“It was the first time I began to really pray and ask God what it was
that he might have in store for me.”After teaching high-school history
for two years, his calling became clear: “There was no big voice in the
sky, no bright lights or anything — just a small little niggle that
didn’t go away and that grew to a certain point where I had to go and
explore.” Preparing for Ordination Amid the Conclave -In Rome, the two
seminarians studied philosophy at the Pontifical University of St.
Thomas Aquinas — Pope Leo XIV’s alma mater — and theology at the
Pontifical Gregorian University, while living at the Pontifical Scots
College in Rome. After years of study and formation, both had the unique
opportunity to witness the final days of the pontificate Pope Francis,
attend his funeral, and experience the whirlwind that followed —
including the conclave. With their diaconate ordination scheduled for May
10 and the conclave set to start on May 7, McCafferty shared that they
were all “slightly concerned as to what would happen if the conclave ran
into the day of the ordination.” As Pope Leo XIV’s name was announced
on the evening of May 8, they were blessed to gather with families and
friends in St. Peter’s Square to witness a day and moment none of them
will soon forget.“We were right up the front, right in the middle,”
Deacon Burt said. “I found the whole thing totally surreal. I couldn’t
believe that after six years of being in Rome, my family was there to
experience that with me. I couldn’t stop crying.”“It was really
touching,” Deacon McCafferty explained. “In the midst of all those
thousands of Catholics that were in the square and in Rome, a little
group of them was my family. That memory will be with me for a very long
time — standing there with family members, witnessing history.”Ordained
Against the Backdrop of Church History-Even though “the conclave and
the new Pope was sort of era-defining for the Church,” Deacon McCafferty
noted, “we were going through a life changing moment, too.”“I felt
totally overwhelmed by the fact that something that I had thought about,
prayed about and dreamed about since I was 10 years old was finally
happening,” Deacon Burt added. “The whole experience was quite
surreal.”While “delighted to have reached that point in [his] life,”
Deacon McCafferty admitted it was all “a bit of a whirlwind.” Reflecting
on the “opportunity to be ordained in a papal basilica,” the new deacon
emphasized how extraordinary the experience was and the unique
connection it offered to the papacy.“We had just seen the new Pope come
out on the loggia two days before, and then we were in St. Paul’s,
where, maybe more than any other papal basilica, the presence of the
popes is quite in your face. They are all ‘looking down on you’ from
those famous mosaics around the walls.”Shaking Hands With the Pope-After
the diaconate ordination, Father Nick Welsh, vice rector of the Scots
College, registered the ordinations with the Vicariate of Rome, as
required by Church law — confirming that Deacons McCafferty and Burt
were the “two first clerics ordained in the Diocese of Rome under the
new Bishop of Rome.”“I texted the vice rector,” Deacon McCafferty said,
“and jokingly said, ‘That’s at least worth a handshake from the
Pope.’”To their great surprise, they were blessed to be in attendance
when the Pope took possession of St. Paul Outside the Walls. Deacon
McCafferty looked forward to conversing in English with the U.S.-born
born — but then admitted, “I ended up getting a bit too excited and
nervous when I got to the moment, and all my rehearsed words completely
went out of my head. I just about managed to take his hand, kiss his
ring and say: ‘Holy Father, thank you. I’m praying for you.’”Deacon
Burt, however, found himself at ease.“I was quite surprised that I
wasn’t nervous at all,” Deacon Burt said, “partly because I feel like I
know him. He is quite grandfatherly, and there is something really
gentle and approachable about him. I felt like I could just walk up to
him and speak to him. I felt quite peaceful about meeting him.”“I shook
his hand and I kissed his ring and I said to him, ‘Holy Father, just to
let you know, Matthew and I were the first to be ordained in the Diocese
of Rome under your pontificate,’” he recounted. “And he said, ‘Oh,
really? That’s lovely.’ And then I said, ‘Well, it’s a great honor and a
privilege for that to be the case, and I assure you that every day I
will pray for you.’”Deacon Burt added, “I got the impression that he
really heard what I had said to him.”Inspired by Pope Leo to Be
Missionary-Minded Priests-Deacon Burt will return to Scotland in June to
serve in different parishes during the year leading up to his priestly
ordination.Reflecting on the religious landscape in Scotland, Burt
explained that, “since COVID, we have seen a huge decline in Mass
attendance,” adding, “In my parish, I think something like 60% of people
didn’t return after the pandemic.”“Pope Benedict spoke about the Church
getting smaller; and, in a sense, when it gets smaller, it becomes a
little bit more apostolic,” he observed. “Perhaps we can be missionary
disciples, catechizing more and better to smaller groups who can then go
out to build up a community. We also need to involve laypeople a lot
more because the priests are getting fewer and fewer. I see it as a
challenge, but I’m quite encouraged by it as well.”For Deacon
McCafferty, who will remain in Rome for another year to complete his
licentiate in canon law, the experience of the universal Church in Rome
has been a gift — especially the encounter with the new Holy Father,
which he described as “very personally invigorating and life-giving.”“I
think God gives us these moments because it can be quite difficult to
remain positive and upbeat in the face of decreasing church attendance
and other challenges,” he observed.“I have found myself to be a little
bit more optimistic than I have been in the past,” Deacon McCafferty
admitted. “I think that there is a lot of work to be done at home, but
you can look at it as having the same opportunity as the disciples had:
to talk to people who don’t know Christ.”“It’s quite appealing to belong
to a missionary evangelical Church, to go back not to preserve a status
quo or go back to the glory days of Catholicism in Scotland, if they
ever existed, but to go back to be a maybe slightly smaller Church, but
more apostolic and more evangelical — in the true sense of the word — to
be a bit like the early Church, the Church of the apostles. I find that
quite an attractive proposition.”Inspired by Pope Leo’s focus on
mission and unity, the new deacons look to their future ministry in
Scotland with hope — and feel more connected than ever to Rome and the
Pope.“I am a cleric of the reign of Leo,” Deacon McCafferty said. “And
the fact that that happened right after his own election, and that I got
to meet him ... I feel a really close connection with him.”“When he was
at St. John Lateran, he said, ‘I’m here to offer you the little that I
have and am,’” Deacon Burt observed. “Things start off as small, by
doing small things with great love, as St. Thérèse of Lisieux, the
patroness of the missions, said. I too really look forward to going home
and just offering the little that I have and am.”Angelicum alumni

FULL TEXT: Homily of Pope Leo XIV On
Jubilee for Families, Children, Grandparents and the Elderly-Pope Leo
XIV Vatican-June 1, 2025
Pope Leo XIV gave the following homily
on Sunday, June 1, 2025 for the Jubilee of Families, Children,
Grandparents, and the Elderly on St. Peter's Square at the Vatican. The
Gospel we have just heard shows us Jesus, at the Last Supper, praying on
our behalf (cf. Jn 17:20). The Word of God, made man, as he nears the
end of his earthly life, thinks of us, his brothers and sisters, and
becomes a blessing, a prayer of petition and praise to the Father, in
the power of the Holy Spirit. As we ourselves, full of wonder and trust,
enter into Jesus’ prayer, we become, thanks to his love, part of a
great plan that concerns all of humanity.Christ prays that we may “all
be one” (v. 21). This is the greatest good that we can desire, for this
universal union brings about among his creatures the eternal communion
of love that is God himself: the Father who gives life, the Son who
receives it and the Spirit who shares it.The Lord does not want us, in
this unity, to be a nameless and faceless crowd. He wants us to be one:
“As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us” (v.
21). The unity for which Jesus prays is thus a communion grounded in the
same love with which God loves, which brings life and salvation into
the world. As such, it is firstly a gift that Jesus comes to bring. From
his human heart, the Son of God prays to the Father in these words: “I
in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the
world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you
have loved me” (v. 23).Let us listen with amazement to these words.
Jesus is telling us that God loves us as he loves himself. The Father
does not love us any less than he loves his only-begotten Son. In other
words, with an infinite love. God does not love less, because he loves
first, from the very beginning! Christ himself bears witness to this
when he says to the Father: “You loved me before the foundation of the
world” (v. 24). And so it is: in his mercy, God has always desired to
draw all people to himself. It is his life, bestowed upon us in Christ,
that makes us one, uniting us with one another.Listening to this Gospel
today, during the Jubilee of Families, Children, Grandparents and the
Elderly, fills us with joy.Dear friends, we received life before we ever
desired it. As Pope Francis said: “all of us are sons and daughters,
but none of us chose to be born” (Angelus, 1 January 2025). Not only
that. As soon as we were born, we needed others in order to live; left
to ourselves, we would not have survived. Someone else saved us by
caring for us in body and spirit. All of us are alive today thanks to a
relationship, a free and freeing relationship of human kindness and
mutual care. That human kindness is sometimes betrayed. As for example,
whenever freedom is invoked not to give life, but to take it away, not
to help, but to hurt. Yet even in the face of the evil that opposes and
takes life, Jesus continues to pray to the Father for us. His prayer
acts as a balm for our wounds; it speaks to us of forgiveness and
reconciliation. That prayer makes fully meaningful our experience of
love for one another as parents, grandparents, sons and daughters. That
is what we want to proclaim to the world: we are here in order to be
“one” as the Lord wants us to be “one,” in our families and in those
places where we live, work and study. Different, yet one; many, yet one;
always, in every situation and at every stage of life.Dear friends, if
we love one another in this way, grounded in Christ, who is “the Alpha
and the Omega,” “the beginning and the end” (cf. Rev 22:13), we will be a
sign of peace for everyone, in society and the world. Let us not
forget: families are the cradle of the future of humanity. In recent
decades, we have received a sign that fills us with joy but also makes
us think. It is the fact that several spouses have been beatified and
canonized, not separately, but as married couples. I think of Louis and
Zélie Martin, the parents of Saint Therese of the Child Jesus; and of
Blessed Luigi and Maria Beltrame Quattrocchi, who raised a family in
Rome in the last century. And let us not forget the Ulma family from
Poland: parents and children, united in love and martyrdom. I said that
this is a sign that makes us think. By pointing to them as exemplary
witnesses of married life, the Church tells us that today’s world needs
the marriage covenant in order to know and accept God’s love and to
defeat, thanks to its unifying and reconciling power, the forces that
break down relationships and societies. For this reason, with a heart
filled with gratitude and hope, I would remind all married couples that
marriage is not an ideal but the measure of true love between a man and a
woman: a love that is total, faithful and fruitful (cf. SAINT PAUL VI,
Humanae Vitae, 9). This love makes you one flesh and enables you, in the
image of God, to bestow the gift of life.I encourage you, then, to be
examples of integrity to your children, acting as you want them to act,
educating them in freedom through obedience, always seeing the good in
them and finding ways to nurture it. And you, dear children, show
gratitude to your parents. To say “thank you” each day for the gift of
life and for all that comes with it is the first way to honour your
father and your mother (cf. Ex 20:12). Finally, dear grandparents and
elderly people, I recommend that you watch over your loved ones with
wisdom and compassion, and with the humility and patience that come with
age.In the family, faith is handed on together with life, generation
after generation. It is shared like food at the family table and like
the love in our hearts. In this way, families become privileged places
in which to encounter Jesus, who loves us and desires our good,
always.Let me add one last thing. The prayer of the Son of God, which
gives us hope on our journey, also reminds us that one day we will all
be uno unum (cf. Saint Augustine, Sermo super Ps. 127): one in the one
Saviour, embraced by the eternal love of God. Not only us, but also our
fathers, mothers, grandmothers, grandfathers, brothers, sisters and
children who have already gone before us into the light of his eternal
Pasch, and whose presence we feel here, together with us, in this moment
of celebration.
FINALLY THE EUROPEAN UNION IS TALKING ABOUT HAVING THEIR OWN ARMY.AND IT MUST HAPPEN.
REVELATION 19:16-21
16
And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, King Of
Kings, And Lord Of Lords.(JESUS RETURNG TO EARTH LITERALLY ON A WHITE
HORSE WITH THE RAPTURED CHRISTIANS 7 YEARS EARLIER)
17 And I saw an
angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all
the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves
together unto the supper of the great God;
18 That ye may eat the
flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men,
and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of
all men, both free and bond, both small and great.(2ND TIME GOD-JESUS

19 And I saw the beast,(E.U WORLD LEADER) and the kings of the
earth, and their armies,(HERE IT SAYS THE E.U WILL HAVE ITS OWN ARMY)
gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, (JESUS)
and against his army.(RAPTURED CHRISTIANS)
20 And the beast (E.U
WORLD LEADER) was taken, and with him the false prophet (POPE FRANCIS)
that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had
received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image.
These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.
21
And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the
horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were
filled with their flesh.
Zephaniah 2:1-15
1 Gather together, yes, gather,O shameless nation,
2
before the decree takes effect[a] -before the day passes away like
chaff—before there comes upon you the burning anger of the Lord, before
there comes upon you the day of the anger of the Lord.
3 Seek the
Lord, all you humble of the land, who do his just commands;[b] seek
righteousness; seek humility; perhaps you may be hidden on the day of
the anger of the Lord.
4 For Gaza shall be deserted, and Ashkelon
shall become a desolation; Ashdod's people shall be driven out at noon,
and Ekron shall be uprooted.
5 Woe to you inhabitants of the
seacoast, you nation of the Cherethites! The word of the Lord is against
you, O Canaan, land of the Philistines; and I will destroy you until no
inhabitant is left.
6 And you, O seacoast, shall be pastures, with meadows[c] for shepherds and folds for flocks.
7
The seacoast shall become the possession of the remnant of the house of
Judah, on which they shall graze, and in the houses of Ashkelon they
shall lie down at evening. For the Lord their God will be mindful of
them and restore their fortunes.
8 “I have heard the taunts of Moab
(JORDAN) and the revilings of the Ammonites, how they have taunted my
people and made boasts against their territory.
9 Therefore, as I
live,” declares the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Moab shall become
like Sodom, and the Ammonites like Gomorrah, a land possessed by nettles
and salt pits, and a waste forever. The remnant of my people shall
plunder them, and the survivors of my nation shall possess them.”
10 This shall be their lot in return for their pride, because they taunted and boasted against the people of the Lord of hosts.
11
The Lord will be awesome against them; for he will famish all the gods
of the earth, and to him shall bow down, each in its place, all the
lands of the nations.
12 You also, O Cushites, shall be slain by my sword.
13
And he will stretch out his hand against the north and destroy
Assyria,(SYRIA) and he will make Nineveh a desolation, a dry waste like
the desert.
14 Herds shall lie down in her midst, all kinds of
beasts;[d] even the owl and the hedgehog[e] shall lodge in her
capitals; a voice shall hoot in the window; devastation will be on the
threshold; for her cedar work will be laid bare.
15 This is the
exultant city that lived securely, that said in her heart, “I am, and
there is no one else.” What a desolation she has become, a lair for wild
beasts! Everyone who passes by her hisses and shakes his fist.Sa'ar: No

DANIEL 2:37-45
37 Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory.
38
And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and
the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made
thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold.
39 And after
thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third
kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth.
40 And
the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh
in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these,
shall it break in pieces and bruise.
41 And whereas thou sawest the
feet and toes, part of potters' clay, and part of iron, the kingdom
shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron,
forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay.
42 And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken.
43
And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle
themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to
another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.
44 And in the days of
these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never
be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it
shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand
for ever.
45 Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of
the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the
brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known
to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is
certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.
DANIEL 7:17-26
17 These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth.
18 But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever.
19
Then I would know the truth of the fourth beast, which was diverse from
all the others, exceeding dreadful, whose teeth were of iron, and his
nails of brass; which devoured, brake in pieces, and stamped the residue
with his feet;
20 And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of
the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn
that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look was
more stout than his fellows.
21 I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them;
22
Until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of
the most High; and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom.
23
Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth,
which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole
earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.
24 And the
ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and
another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first,
and he shall subdue three kings.
25 And he shall speak great words
against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High,
and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his
hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.
26 But the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy it unto the end.

to ancient oriental usage, slaves and soldiers bore the name or stamp of

him for the cause of Christ, and which mark him as Christ's faithful and

Galatians, the passage cited). (Herodotus 7, 233; Aristotle, Aelian,

Diplomats
prepare ground for June conference on two-State solution for Israel and
Palestine By Vibhu Mishra-23 May 2025 Peace and Security
Diplomats
convened at UN Headquarters in New York on Friday to lay the groundwork
for a crucial international conference in June, aimed at advancing
global efforts towards achieving a two-State solution to the
Israel-Palestine conflict. The preparatory session brought together UN
Member States to align expectations and finalise arrangements for eight
thematic roundtables that will help shape the conference’s
outcome.General Assembly President Philémon Yang urged countries to
seize the crucial opportunity to finally make progress.“The horrors we
have witnessed in Gaza for over nineteen months should spur us to urgent
action to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The devastating cycles
of death, destruction, and displacement cannot be allowed to continue,”
he said.“This conflict cannot be resolved through permanent war, nor
through endless occupation or annexation. It will only end when Israelis
and Palestinians can live side by side in their own sovereign,
independent States, in peace, security, and dignity,” he added.General
Assembly President Yang addresses the preparatory meeting.Concrete
outcomes needed-Co-chairs France and Saudi Arabia emphasised the need
for the June conference to go beyond reaffirming principles and achieve
concrete results on the ground.“We must urgently move from words to
deeds. We must move from ending the war in Gaza to ending the conflict
itself,” said Anne-Claire Legendre, Middle East and North Africa advisor
to French President Emmanuel Macron.“Faced with the facts on the
ground, the prospects of a Palestinian State must be maintained.
Irreversible steps and concrete measures for the implementation thereof
are necessary.”Alongside, she reiterated calls for a lasting ceasefire,
an immediate influx of humanitarian aid and the release of
hostages.Historic moment-Manal bint Hassan Radwan, head of the Saudi
Arabian negotiating team, called the moment “historic,” stating that the
preparatory meeting must “chart a course for action, not reflection.”
“Civilians continue to pay the price of a war that must end immediately.
The escalation in the West Bank is equally alarming. Despair grows
deeper by the day,” she said.“This is precisely why we must speak not
only of ending the war, but of ending a conflict that has lasted nearly
eight decades,” she continued, adding efforts to end fighting and secure
release of hostages and detainees must be “anchored in a credible and
irreversible political plan that addresses the root cause of the
conflict and offers a real path to peace, dignity and mutual
security.”Outcome document-The General Assembly decided to convene the
conference in its resolution ES-10/24. Further details were outlined in
resolution 79/81.As outlined in General Assembly resolution 79/81, the
Conference will produce an action-oriented outcome document entitled
“Peaceful settlement of the question of Palestine and implementation of
the two-State solution”.The aim is to chart a clear and irreversible
pathway toward a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in accordance
with UN resolutions.About the Conference-The conference will include a
plenary session with statements from the President of the General
Assembly, the UN Secretary-General, and the co-chairs, followed by
interventions from Member States and observers.According to a concept
note from the co-chairs, the conference will also feature eight thematic
roundtables, each focused on critical dimensions of the two-State
solution. The working groups include security arrangements for both
Israelis and Palestinians, the economic viability of a Palestinian
State, and humanitarian action and reconstruction.
US ambassador to Israel tells Paris to 'carve out' Palestinian state on French Riviera-Mohamed Hatem , Sunday 1 Jun 2025
Huckabee,
a staunch supporter of Israel who has previously denied the existence
of Palestinians, made the remarks ahead of a conference on Palestinian
statehood scheduled for 17-20 June, co-led by France and Saudi Arabia,
at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York. His comments come as
a growing number of countries formally recognize a Palestinian state
amid Israel’s war on Gaza, which has killed more than 54,000 people and
pushed over 2 million to the brink of starvation.French President
Emmanuel Macron said on Friday that recognizing a Palestinian state was
not only a "moral duty" but also a "political necessity."France has
indicated it could formally recognize Palestinian statehood "within
months," potentially at the upcoming UN summit.Nearly 150 countries have
already done so, and in 2024, Spain, Ireland, and Norway joined that
list. However, full UN membership requires approval from the Security
Council, where the United States has repeatedly used its veto power to
block Palestinian statehood.Huckabee responded on Sunday, echoing recent
statements by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who condemned
Saudi Arabia for reiterating its stance that there would be no
normalization with Israel without a Palestinian state."They are welcome
to do that," Huckabee said of France, "but they are not welcome to
impose that kind of pressure on a sovereign nation," he added, without
acknowledging Israel’s occupation of Jerusalem, the West Bank, southern
Lebanon, and Syria’s Golan Heights — all breaches of international law
and sovereignty."I hope they will reconsider, but the US will not
participate. It simply will not be a part of such a ruse," he said. The
UN conference in New York later this month is expected to focus on
advancing diplomatic recognition for a Palestinian state despite Israeli
objections. The foreign ministers of five Arab nations Jordan, Egypt,
Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey—along with the
secretary general of the Arab League— condemned on Saturday Israel's
decision to block their planned visit to the occupied West Bank, where
they were due to meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah on
Sunday. An unnamed Israeli official quoted in local media accused Abbas
of planning a "provocative meeting" to promote Palestinian statehood,
adding that Israel "will not cooperate with such moves aimed at harming
it and its security".Had the visit gone ahead, it would have marked the
first time a Saudi foreign minister travelled to the West Bank since
Israel occupied the territory in 1967.Axios reported the visit was
intended to increase international pressure for recognition of a
Palestinian state as Israel continues to expand settlements and entrench
its military occupation.
Macron navigates rocky path to recognising Palestinian state-By John Irish-May 28, 20257:40 AM EDT.
PARIS,
May 28 (Reuters) - French President Emmanuel Macron is leaning towards
recognising a Palestinian state, but diplomats and experts say such a
move may prove a premature and ineffective way to pressure Israel into
moving towards a peace deal with the Palestinians. They say it could
deepen Western splits, not only within the already-divided European
Union, but also with the United States, Israel's staunchest ally, and
would need to be accompanied by other measures such as sanctions and
trade bans if recognition were to be anything more than a symbolic
gesture.French officials are weighing up the move ahead of a United
Nations conference, which France and Saudi Arabia are co-hosting between
June 17-20, to lay out the parameters for a roadmap to a Palestinian
state, while ensuring Israel's security."Only a political solution will
make it possible to restore peace and build for the long term," Macron
said on Wednesday during a visit to Indonesia."Together with Saudi
Arabia, we will soon be organising a conference on Gaza in New York to
give fresh impetus to the recognition of a Palestinian state and the
recognition of the State of Israel and its right to live in peace and
security in this region," added Macron. If Macron does go ahead, France,
home to Europe's largest Jewish and Muslim communities, would become the
first Western heavyweight to recognise a Palestinian state, potentially
giving greater momentum to a movement hitherto dominated by smaller
nations that are generally more critical of Israel."If France moves,
several countries will follow," Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth
Eide told Reuters.Macron's stance has shifted amid Israel's intensified
Gaza offensive and escalating violence by Israeli settlers in the West
Bank, and there is a growing sense of urgency in Paris to act now before
the idea of a two-state solution vanishes forever."We must move from
words to deeds. Faced with facts on the ground, the prospect of a
Palestinian state must be maintained. Irreversible and concrete measures
are necessary," Macron's Middle East adviser Anne-Claire Legendre said
last week.Diplomats caution that while Macron now favours the move, he
has yet to make a final decision, and things could change - including a
potential Gaza ceasefire accord - before mid-June.However, his diplomats
are scrambling to ensure the best conditions are in place for him to
make the decision, including full assessments at the UN conference on
the reform of the Palestinian Authority, disarming Hamas or future
reconstruction.ISRAELI LOBBYING-Israeli officials have spent months
lobbying to prevent what some have described as "a nuclear bomb" for
bilateral relations. The idea that France, one of Israel's closest allies
and a G7 member, could recognise a Palestinian state, would certainly
infuriate Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. When Britain and
Canada joined France this month to say they could impose concrete
measures on Israel and commit to recognising a Palestinian state,
Netanyahu issued a firm rebuke, accusing the leaders of the three
countries of antisemitism.Diplomats say Canada and Britain remain
lukewarm for now about recognition, suggesting the priority is to make a
difference on the ground, something that may dampen Macron's
ambitions.According to two sources familiar with the matter, Israel's
warnings to France have ranged from scaling back intelligence sharing to
complicating Paris' regional initiatives - even hinting at possible
annexation of parts of the West Bank.Whether that would materialise
seems unlikely, given the likely international fallout fuelling one of
Israel's greatest fears: deepening isolation, particularly with regard
to Europe, its key trade partner."(But) the reaction will be negative
across the board (in Israel)," Tamir Hayman, Executive Director at the
Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) told Reuters, adding it
would feed an ultra-right narrative in Israel that the world is against
it. "It would be useless and a waste of time."SHIFTING FRENCH
VIEWS-Macron strongly backed Israel after Hamas' October 7, 2023 attack,
which killed 1,200 people and took 250 hostages. But he has steadily
sharpened his language against Israel over its actions in Gaza, where
the death toll among Palestinians has risen to more than 50,000,
according to Palestinian health officials."We need to move towards
recognition. Over the next few months, we will," Macron said during an
interview on April 9.Even then, he hedged, setting vague conditions and
saying he aimed to build momentum with a coalition backing France while
nudging Muslim states toward recognising Israel. However, there are no
indications for now that any new Muslim states - including Saudi Arabia -
are ready to move towards normalising ties with Israel, given the
widespread anger over Gaza's plight.Macron's critics argue that
recognition should come as part of negotiations towards a two-state
solution - not before - and warning that an early move could weaken
incentives for Palestinians to engage.
Underlining divisions within
the EU, one European diplomat said: "It is our view that this
recognition would not be helpful now or encourage more action within the
member states."Others say recognition must be twinned with other
measures such as a Europe-wide ban on trade with illegal Israeli
settlements on occupied Palestinian territories and specific sanctions
on Israeli officials.French officials say they will not be swayed by
such criticism or by the Israeli pressure."If there is a moment in
history to recognise a Palestinian state even if it's just symbolic then
I would say that moment has probably come," said a senior French
official, adding that Macron may also want to leave a trace in history
before his presidential mandate expires in 2027.Additional reporting by

Macron weighs recognizing Palestine despite Zionist lobby pressure-31 May 2025 - 13:56-News ID: 1694143-Source: Pars Today
French
President Emmanuel Macron is considering recognizing an independent
Palestinian state, despite pressure from Zionist groups. If France
proceeds, it could influence other European nations and shift the global
stance on Palestine.AhlulBayt News Agency: French President Emmanuel
Macron faces significant obstacles in recognizing an independent
Palestinian state due to pressure from Zionist lobbying groups.Reuters
reported that Macron is inclined toward recognizing Palestine as an
independent state. French officials are evaluating this decision ahead
of the UN conference, scheduled to be hosted jointly by Paris and Riyadh
on June 17-20. The conference aims to define the roadmap for
Palestinian statehood. If Macron firmly follows through, France would
become the first Western nation with a large Muslim and Jewish
population to recognize Palestinian sovereignty. This move could
encourage smaller countries critical of Israel to take similar
action.Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide stated, "If France
moves toward recognizing Palestine, several European nations will
follow."Macron’s stance has evolved amid escalating violence in Gaza and
increasing attacks on West Bank residents by Israeli settlers. The
growing crisis has intensified calls in Paris to act before the
"Two-State Solution" collapses entirely.Anne-Claire Legendre, Macron’s
aide for West Asian affairs, said in a New York meeting on May 23, "We
must move beyond rhetoric. The possibility of Palestinian statehood must
be preserved through irreversible, tangible measures."Reuters also
reported that Zionist officials have sought to prevent what they call a
"nuclear bomb" in France-Israel relations.France’s recognition of
Palestine as a sovereign nation—despite being one of Israel’s closest
allies and a G7 member—is expected to provoke strong reactions from
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.According to informed sources,
Israel has threatened to limit intelligence-sharing with France and
warned that Macron’s decision could complicate Paris’ regional
strategies.French officials assert that they will not be swayed by
Israeli criticism or pressure to abandon their stance.A senior French
official stated, "If there is a moment to recognize Palestine, even
symbolically, I believe that moment has arrived."Experts suggest that
France’s shift in position—amid global focus on Gaza—could be more of a
political maneuver than a genuine initiative to support
Palestinians./129
